From failure to fusilli, this deliciously hilarious read tells the story of Giulia Melucci's fizzled romances and the mouth-watering recipes she used to seduce her men, smooth over the lumps, and console herself when the relationships flamed out.
From an affectionate alcoholic, to the classic New York City commitment-phobe, to a hipster aged past his sell date, and not one, but two novelists with Peter Pan complexes, Giulia has cooked for them all. She suffers each disappointment with resolute cheer (after a few tears) and a bowl of pastina (recipe included) and has lived to tell the tale so that other women may go out, hopefully with greater success, and if that's not possible, at least have something good to eat.
Peppered throughout Giulia's delightful and often poignant remembrances are fond recollections of her mother's cooking, the recipes she learned from her, and many she invented on her own inspired by the men in her life. Readers will howl at Giulia's boyfriend-littered past and swoon over her irresistable culinary creations.

From Booklist
This little Italian girl from Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge surely did go through a lot of men in her search for Mr. Right. She also went through a lot of pasta. By day, Melucci worked as a publicist in a glamorous but poorly paid Manhattan job. One by one, she found boyfriends, fed them well, and established relationships. Thus, she recapitulates the hoary truth about the path to a man’s heart lying through his stomach. Hard as she tried, her relationships didn’t last, foundering over serious issues such as alcoholism or fear of commitment. It’s not for lack of her trying. She even took off work to create an Italian-influenced seder for a Jewish suitor. One reason for her constant disappointment lies in her affection for her late father, who gave her more love and support than she realized in her youth. Recipes included. --Mark Knoblauch
From Publishers Weekly
Melucci, a publicity executive, clearly knows her way around the cucina, and her clever memoir of being loved and left includes the recipes she associates with her exes. The recipes are mostly Italian, and the men are mostly losers, but listeners will have a good time laughing with Melucci at her various boyfriends' foibles (even as they wonder why such a smart and funny woman chooses the same type of childish man over and over). Melucci does a wonderful job narrating; her voice carries the listener through the first flush of new romance to the final indignities of a relationship gone wrong. The audio format does not work well for the recipes, however; listeners eager to cook these fabulous meals should get a copy of the print version to keep from rewinding the audio book repeatedly while jotting down recipes. A Grand Central hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 26). (May)

At once mouthwatering and heartbreaking, this book could not sport a more apt title--unless it could be SEX AND THE CITY COOKS. Melucci traverses the trials and tribulations of the New York City dating scene, describing a series of compelling, if somewhat cheerfully neurotic, relationships. Peppered throughout with foodie analogies, Melucci's delightful and poignant reminiscences embrace not only the loves of her life but also her past culinary inspirations. Read by the author, the romantic intrigues are all the more entertaining as they are sparked by Melucci's bold zeal and pithy humor. Listening to Melucci put her romances into perspective, one feels that only the author could imbue the reading with such wisdom, humor, and optimistic ardor for fine food and love. Food, Fun, and Broken Relationships
By Lynette R. Fleming
This book was just what I expected ... a playful, humorous look at life in New York City (food, men and career ... what else is there?). For someone like me, an ordinary, Midwestern, middle-age wife and mother, this was an amazing journey into the literary life and escapades of someone in a far different place than where I am.
That said I can also admit that I've done my share of cooking my way into a man's heart (both in my single days and later as a wife). Like Giulia Melucci, fine food and romance are what I love most. Rather than judge her as did several other reviewers, I enjoyed her boyfriend tales dotted with recipes like treasure hidden in the forest.
Most cookbooks follow the same boring format ... introductory chapter, recipe, recipe, recipe. If you're looking for a cookbook, this isn't it. This is a tale of love, found and lost, intermingled with easy-to-make fabulous, mostly Mediterranean recipes. For a light-hearted read and a look into a life perhaps very different from your own, this book's the one. Buy it, love it, and share it!

Recipes and humor with a timeline of men who give too little and the girl that just keeps giving her all.
By Sparkle
If you can relate to reaching a man's heart through his stomach, can accept that Giulia's memoirs are just that.. her memoirs... and you enjoy eavesdropping on a little light hearted, funny story telling this would be a fun read for you. There are some good laughs, great recipes and even occassions to sigh and roll your eyes on her behalf.
Giulia tells the story of her search to find someone special to share her life with in Brooklyn. She's a smart, PR Exec, working in the city in fashion media. Seemingly she has it all together. She then shares the details of the men she's chased after and the ultimate failures of those relationships and you realize... even a girl who "has it all" sometime's doesn't.
She is funny and writes like she's telling her story to friends over lunch. If she were my friend though, I would have grabbed her by the shoulders and said.... "Girl, if he's not that into you and if you have to grow on each other like mold, let him go! Don't chase him! You deserve sooo much better."
I found it to be a good, easy and fun read.
