Detective John Corey, last seen in Plum Island, now faces his toughest assignment yet: the pursuit and capture of the world's most dangerous terrorist -- a young Arab known as "The Lion" who has baffled a federal task force and shows no sign of stopping in his quest for revenge against the American pilots who bombed Libya and killed his family. Filled with unrelenting suspense and surprising plot twists at every terrifying turn, THE LION'S GAME is a heartstopping race against time and one of Nelson DeMille's most riveting thrillers.

Amazon.com Review
John Corey and Asad Khalil have both lived hard-knock lives. As revealed in Nelson DeMille's monster bestseller Plum Island, the gruff, wisecracking NYPD homicide cop Corey stopped a hail of bullets--but he couldn't stop his wife from walking out on him. Asad, raised under Muammar Qaddafi's eye after his dad's murder, lost his surviving family in the 1986 bombing of Libya. He's heard the nasty rumors about his mom and the colonel, but he aims his rage at the infidels. The boy's got such a gift for terrorism he's earned the nickname "the Lion," and Boris, his vodka-sozzled, sex-addicted émigré mentor, knows precisely how to conduct a murder tour of America one step ahead of the police, the FBI, the CIA, and the ATTF (Anti-Terrorist Task Force), which combines members of all three. A pity Boris must die, but hey, he's an infidel too.

Asad pretends to defect, handcuffed to agents aboard a 747 bound for JFK, and he proves to be a worse seatmate than a siding salesman. Corey and his ATTF colleagues (most conspicuously the FBI's sexy Kate Mayfield, Corey's match in badinage and bad-guy busting) strive to halt Asad's methodical yet unpredictable bloodbath. Skillfully, DeMille alternates chapters told from Asad's and Corey's points of view. DeMille did his authenticity homework: when we're not savoring his gift for wiseacre dialogue in the Corey-Kate chapters, we're sweating alongside Asad on his ghastly, ingenious jihad.

The New York Times put DeMille's social satire on a par with Edith Wharton's, and he's great on the colliding folkways of the feuding, mutually doublecrossing crimebuster institutions. Naturally, he's on the side of the regular-guy flatfoots. "Cops sit on their asses and flip through their folders," he writes. "Feds sit on their derrieres and peruse their dossiers." And the CIA gets it in the shorts, satirically speaking. One deplores the mass murderers, but the book's real bad guys wear the priciest suits.

DeMille reportedly has a $25 million book contract. With fast, funny, absorbing thrillers like The Lion's Game, he's earned it. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
John Corey, former NYPD Homicide detective and star of DeMille's Plum Island, is back in this breezily narrated high-octane thriller about the hunt for a Libyan terrorist who has set his sights on some very specific targets--the Americans who bombed Libya on April 15, 1986. The novel begins with a tense airport scene--a transcontinental flight from Paris is flying into New York, and no one has been able to contact the pilot via radio. On the flight is Asad Khalil, a Libyan defector who will be met by Special Contract Agent Corey, his FBI "mentor" Kate Mayfield, and the rest of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force. But when the plane lands, everyone on board is dead--except Khalil, who disappears after attacking the ATTF's airport headquarters. Has he left the country? Not if John Corey's right--and we know he is, thanks to gripping third-person chapters detailing Khalil's mission alternating with Corey's easy-going first-person narration. And by making Khalil, who lost most of his family in the 1986 bombing, as much of a protagonist as Corey, DeMille adds several shades of gray to what in less skillful hands might have been cartoonishly black and white. If anything, the reader ends up rooting for the bad guy, Khalil, with his mission of vengeance, is a more complex character than John Corey, who never drops his ex-cop bravado (thus trivializing a romance that moves from first date to proposal of marriage within the few days the plot covers). But as usual, DeMille artfully constructs a compulsively readable thriller around a troubling story line, slowly developing his villain from a faceless entity into a nation's all-too-human nemesis. Agent, Nick Ellison. 500,000 first printing; major ad/promo; BOMC main selection; 12-city author tour; Time-Warner audio. (Jan.)

THE SLEEPING LION WAKES...
By lawyeraau
I confess that I love the character, John Corey, the tough talking, wise-cracking NYPD homicide detective that the author first introduced in his mega bestseller, "Plum Island". I was, therefore, delighted to find him headlining this novel. No longer with NYPD, John Corey is now with the federal government's Anti-Terrorist Task Force (ATTF).

When a Libyan terrorist, Asad Khalil, known as "the Lion" decides to defect to the West, a jumbo jet from Paris carrying him, as well as hundreds of other passengers, is approaching the runway at JFK airport in New York City. The plane has been incommunicado and remains so when it lands. Something is terribly wrong.

Asad Khalil is apparently on a mission, and his goal is to kill by any means necessary all those who were involved in the 1986 bombing of Libya that killed his family. He leaves a swath of carnage in his wake, as he seeks to complete his personal jihad. John Corey and his ATTF colleague, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, join forces, and when these two are not busy trading light-hearted banter, they are at the top of their game in trying to stop Asad Khalil from completing his mission.

This is a top-notch action thriller. The author is definitely at the top of his game with this book. The book presents perspectives of both John Corey and Asad Khalil, so that the reader knows what makes them each tick. Great dialogue, non-stop action, and interesting characters, including one of the most intriguing villains of all time, are some of the hallmarks of this page-turner. With a fiendishly clever plot, peppered with many twists and turns, this novel is sure to thrill those readers who enjoy action packed thrillers. I loved this book!

Excellent as always!

Love John Corey. His dialogue and inner thoughts made me laugh out loud. Great story that was hard to put down. I was on a cruise and all I wanted to do was read.
The details were riveting and believable. It felt very authentic and after 9/11, there were some parts that were very prescient.
Highly recommended.

One of the best among many very good authors!
By Steven W.
I have now read two books by Nelson DeMille, both featuring the character John Corey. I love many authors in this genre but DeMille excels at character development and plot structure. Many "reads" lead up to an unsatisfying payoff, but not Mr. DeMille, I am looking forward to reading everything the man has published to date.

Oona, Living in the Shadows: A Biography of Oona O'Neill Chaplin, by Jane Scovell

Her father, the only American playwright to receive a Nobel Prize, was a chronic alcoholic. When she was a child, her father deserted her; when she turned 18, he disinherited her. Her older half-brother, a Pulitzer Prize-winning classical scholar, and her younger brother, a drug addict, each committed suicide. A product of New York society, she was accepted at Vassar, but chose instead to seek an acting career in Hollywood. There she met her future -- and only -- husband. He was the comic genius of motion pictures and 36 years her senior. She was America's darling. Why did she give up everything to marry a much older man? Did she "stifle" herself? Were her children good to her? Were there other men? And, most crucial, how did she escape the family curse of alcoholism and mental illness? This in-depth biography sheds light on a truly fascinating woman and the many extraordinary people whose lives touched upon hers.

Amazon.com Review
Like Jackie O, Oona O'Neill (1925-91) captured public attention for two reasons: her impressive familial/marital alliances (she was the sole daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and the last wife of filmmaker Charlie Chaplin) and her elegant, raven-haired beauty. The two women also shared vitas that were filled with childhood disappointments, humiliating public attention during crises, and the wrenching deaths of loved ones. But as Jane Scovell's new biography clearly shows, Oona O'Neill Chaplin lacked both the stoicism and personal passion of Jackie Onassis. Hers was a spirit too tender--and fundamentally fragile--to assert itself fully or survive independently for any period of time. Hence the book's apt subtitle, "Living in the Shadows."

With information culled from press clips, interviews with Chaplin's friends and contemporaries, and previous biographies of Eugene O'Neill, Scovell's book paints an engaging portrait of a privileged, potentially fabulous life gone way wrong. Most fittingly for their subsequent tortured relationship, Oona's parents--Eugene O'Neill and writer Agnes Boulton--met in a Greenwich Village bar dubbed the Hellhole. Eight years into their marriage, in which they flitted between Greenwich Village, Bermuda, Provincetown, Maine, and New Jersey, O'Neill abandoned the family life for the erstwhile actress Carlotta Monterey (christened Hazel Neilson Tharsing). Oona was two at the time. O'Neill, a boorish father, saw her only a handful of times before she turned 18; at that point, he disinherited her because he wasn't happy with the oozy publicity she was earning as a New York debutante. That same year, Oona moved out to Hollywood (in the hopes of pursuing an acting career), and met and married Charlie Chaplin, who was facing a scandalous paternity suit at that moment. Chaplin was 54, Oona was 18. She never worked again, and he was at the end of his career. They had eight children (the last when Chaplin was 72), and she stood by him till his death in 1977, spending most of their years together exiled in Sweden, where Chaplin had gone to avoid a host of problems with the U.S. government. After Chaplin's death, Oona returned to the U.S., where she lived 14 depressed, alcoholic years before dying at age 66 of cancer.

There's a breezy, slightly superficial tone to this book, despite Scovell's attempt to elucidate fully the potholes and vistas of Oona's dramatic roadmap. None of Oona's eight children, or close family members, seems to have talked to Scovell, nor did Scovell have any significant access to Oona's correspondence or other writing. Though her dramatic fade is well captured here, Oona never completely blooms in this book. --Jean Lenihan

From Publishers Weekly
Scovell's moving, intelligent, perceptive biography of Oona O'Neill Chaplin, daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill and wife of film legend Charlie Chaplin, is told with sympathy and feminist insight. At age 17, Oona, a Manhattan debutante spurned by the neglectful, alcoholic, famous father who had abandoned her when she was two, went to Hollywood to become an actress. Instead, a year later, in 1943, she married Chaplin, then 54 and thrice-divorced, an English-born Casanova with a reputation for seducing young women. According to Scovell, who has collaborated on autobiographies with Elizabeth Taylor, Kitty Dukakis and Maureen Stapleton, Oona found in Chaplin a father surrogate, but also a genuine love match. And Chaplin found in Oona a steady, evenhanded companion who idolized him, and a caretaker for his dotage. Scovell paints a scathing picture of O'Neill pere as an aloof, mean-spirited parent who dumped Oona's eccentric, alcoholic mother, Agnes Boulton, in 1927 to marry actress Carlotta Monterey. It was Oona's mutually supportive union with Chaplin, Scovell contends, that saved her from the inner demons that led to the suicides of her drug-addicted brother, Shane, and her half-brother, Yale classicist Eugene O'Neill Jr. Oona and Chaplin moved to Switzerland in 1953 after Hollywood blacklisted the comic for leftist leanings; they had eight children, who gave Oona mixed, yet, on the whole, favorable reviews as a mother. After Chaplin's death in 1977, Oona, overwhelmed by grief and despair, descended into alcoholic dissolution; she died of cancer in 1991. As Scovell makes clear in this touching, bittersweet biography, Oona's tragedy was that she went directly from the specter of her awful father to Chaplin: "She never stood on her own."

A glowingportrait of a woman who defined grace and dignity
By A Customer
Abandoned by her father, Eugene O'Neill, Oona transformed this hurt into love and care for her much older husband, Charlie Chaplin. This book details her life, and gives us great insight into what family, fame, love and loyalty mean in this century. While not known for any traditional arts, such as acting or writing (though, it is clear from this biography that she may have been successful in either form), Oona's art was her life itself; her ability to deal with a father who rejected her, a sibling she looked up to but could not help, and a husband to whom she devoted herself to as he lived out his life in a time when the world was rapidly changing.
The writing is clear and without pretension. Ms. Scovell realizes that Oona was a complex person and conveys that to the reader. Throughout the book, the nature of Oona O'Neill Chaplin is always apparent --- a tribute to a well-researched biography.

Skipping across the surface of a life
By Lady Eve Sidwich
As one begins this book, which starts with fairly lengthy backgrounds on the O'Neill and Boulton families, it seems that one is on the way to learning as much about Oona O'Neill Chaplin as her forebears. This is not the case. I came away knowing her life only superficially. More detail is devoted to Eugene O'Neill and Charles Chaplin (both written about exhaustively elsewhere), but who was Oona?

All I derived from this term-paper-like bio were the surface details of Oona's life: she had a chaotic childhood, she went to good schools, she evolved into a Cafe Society glamour queen by her mid-teens. She decided to become a movie star and moved to LA. She made a very poor screen test before being introduced to Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin, at 54, was taken by the lush 17-year-old. They married shortly thereafter, just as she turned 18. Eight children, an exile from the U.S. and millions of dollars and accolades later, Chaplin died. Oona, who apparently had already begun drinking, became a confirmed alcoholic and, eventually, a recluse. She died in her mid-60's of pancreatic cancer. This much can as easily be learned on Wikipedia or via Google.

Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America, by Michael Kantor, Laurence Maslon

From the most popular routines and the most ingenious physical shtick to the snappiest wisecracks and the most biting satire of the last century, MAKE 'EM LAUGH illuminates who we are as a nation by exploring what makes us laugh, and why. Authors Laurence Maslon and Michael Kantor draw on countless sources to chronicle the past century of American comedy and the geniuses who created and performed it-melding biography, American history, and a lotta laughs into an exuberant, important book.

Each of the six chapters focuses a different style or archetype of comedy, from the slapstick pratfalls of Buster Keaton and Lucille Ball through the wiseguy put-downs of Groucho Marx and Larry David, to the incendiary bombshells of Mae West and Richard Pryor . And at every turn the significance of these comedians-smashing social boundaries, challenging the definition of good taste, speaking the truth to the powerful-is vividly tangible. MAKE 'EM LAUGH is more than a compendium of American comic genius; it is a window onto the way comedy both reflects the world and changes it-one laugh at a time.

Starting from the groundbreaking PBS series, the authors have gone deeper into the works and lives of America's great comic artists, with biographical portraits, archival materials, cultural overviews, and rare photos. Brilliantly illustrated, with insights (and jokes) from comedians, writers and producers, along with film, radio, television, and theater historians, MAKE 'EM LAUGH is an indispensible, definitive book about comedy in America.

From Publishers Weekly
Kantor, who produced and directed the Emmy-winning Broadway: The American Musical for PBS in 2004, returns with a six-part PBS series on comedy. For this companion book, he teamed with NYU professor Maslon, editor of Library of America's George S. Kaufman collection. Their guide to guffaws and giggles ranges from silent film actors (Charles Chaplin, Buster Keaton) to sitcoms (Seinfeld), satire (Mad, SNL) and stand-up comics (George Carlin, Lenny Bruce). Taking a scattershot approach with 60-plus performer profiles and sidebars, the resulting text is sometimes superficial with curious oversights; two decades of radio comedy get squeezed into three pages, so Amos 'n' Andy and Bob and Ray rate only a few paragraphs; Stan Freberg sold millions of records yet is dismissed in a single sentence. With hundreds of fascinating photographs, this book benefits from the TV series' extensive photo research, but what is certain to be a hilarious cascade of clips on PBS is a pratfall in print. This big, beautiful book is the companion to the PBS series about what makes Americans laugh. It's not meant to be comprehensive, and it's not. But what is here is fascinating. Filled with photographs, it's easy to open to any page and begin reading. I couldn't put it down.

The book is separated into six chapters that explore different styles of comedy. There is lots of overlap, of course -- Harpo Marx would be at home in the "Oddball" segment, and Jon Stewart is certainly a "Smart-Aleck" -- but this convention makes it easy to put similar comedians together, and focus on why what they do makes us laugh.

There is lots of comedy here. The book is peppered with transcripts of comedy routines and television shows. Quotes from people in the industry, including writers, producers and other comedians, provide insight to what makes performers tick. Rare archival material includes a full page detailing The Sketch That Couldn't Be Done, written by Elaine May for The Smothers Brothers (it was considered in bad taste). If you want to know George Carlin's seven dirty words, they're all here.

In a sweeping book like this, lots will be left out. But I have a few personal peeves. The only mention of one of my favorites, Red Skelton, is to diss him in the segment about Buster Keaton: "(Keaton) spent the next two decades doing what work he could get as an off-camera gagman for stars like Red Skelton, who couldn't hold a candle to Keaton." Animated classic film comedies from Pixar such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo are ignored. And Garry Shandling merits only a mention in the Gilda Radner section, instead of being in a spotlight for The Larry Sanders Show. Worst of all, women are passed over routinely for guys: there are segments on 53 male comedians versus 9 for women. And that's not funny.

Here's the chapter list:

Introduction

1. Slip on a Banana Peel: The Knockabouts
Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Harpo Marx, The Three Stooges, Lucille Ball, Jerry Lewis, Jim Carrey

Sock it to Me?: Satire and Parody

A Good Read
By Conor Cunneen
A really good read. Make 'em Laugh provides excellent commentary on many of the people who made America and the world laugh.
This is the perfect book for anyone interested in the art of comedy, be they a humorous motivational keynote speaker, motivational humorist or not.
Broken into six sections:
The Knockabouts
Sock it to me / Parody
Never Give a Sucker an Even Break
Nerds, Jerks, Oddballs and Suckers
Honey I'm Home
The Groundbreakers

The authors provide crisp interesting biographies of almost all of the greats.
About the only obvious name missing for me was Bob Newhart. If comedy is tragedy separated by time, many of those portrayed were bound to have been comics given the unhappy or lonely childhood many experienced.

Interesting photography and some great quotes add to the overall good feel about this book. A great gift for someone who is into fun and good humor.

fun, but inadequate
By Richard S. Parker
I'll start by admitting that the book is fun. I finished it in two snowy days when schools were closed and, as a public school librarian, I had time on my hands. It covers a lot of ground. But there are real, fundamental, problems. First, the material is a bit centered on the "cult of personality." If the genre of comedy can't be pinned to specific individuals, it doesn't get much attention. The biggest hole in the book is a one-sentence description of screwball comedy. That's it. Where's The Awful Truth, Arsenic and Old Lace, Some Like It Hot, The Philadelphia Story or Twentieth Century? Nowhere! This whole immensely influential and popular genre of comedy never gets its due; indeed, hardly gets a mention. With comedy, it's all a matter of taste. Who's great? Who's merely good? But, a book that gives Lucy three pages and Paul Lynde five has got to be taken with a grain of salt and a certain amount of healthy skepticism has to be applied to the text. And, that brings me to my final point. The authors are a little too free with hyperbolic praise. "Eddie Murphy remains the most successful comedian in American movies" is a statement that ought to be examined very carefully. There are other claims made in the book that should be taken with several large grains of salt. Enjoy the book for what is does present, remind yourself of the work of performers you've enjoyed over the years; but (and this is an ironic thing to say about a book on comedy) don't take the book too seriously.

No one like Richard
By Jean Marie
I first purchased this book in 1982 and really loved the exercise routines and Richards's overall diet and lifestyle advice - It is direct and to the point. Todays diets are gimmicks and complicated and some are ridiculous.. So when I went to find this book in my myriad of shelves - it had disappeared (or else it is buried somewhere) and thanks to Amazon I was directed to a source that had a used copy of the book - came it great shape- So I am doing the exercise routines and enjoying reading the book again - it really is about calories and exercise - very simple, good book. Haven't seen or heard about Richard in ages - he did so much good work..

I lost weight all because of this book!
By Gloria A. Villarreal
I used this book in the mid 90s to lose some weight. I read it over the holidays, took notes and followed the diet advice in January. By May of that same year, I had lost 60 pounds! After a few weeks of the dieting, I decided to purchase the Richard Simmons' "Disco Sweat" workout. What a fun way to lose weight. I really enjoy Richard's brand of motivation...I plan on dusting off that book and following the diet again to shed some weight that has since crept back in due to laziness.

It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy, by D. Michael Abrashoff

The story of Captain D. Michael Abrashoff and his command of USS Benfold has become legendary inside and outside the Navy. Now Abrashoff offers this fascinating tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas.

When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of USS Benfold, a ship armed with every cutting-edge system available, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity. Knowing that responsibility for improving performance rested with him, he realized he had to improve his own leadership skills before he could improve his ship. Within months he created a crew of confident and inspired problem-solvers eager to take the initiative and take responsibility for their actions. The slogan on board became "It's your ship," and Benfold was soon recognized far and wide as a model of naval efficiency.

How did Abrashoff do it? Against the backdrop of today's United States Navy-Benfold was a key player in our Persian Gulf fleet-Abrashoff shares his secrets of successful management including:

* See the ship through the eyes of the crew: By soliciting a sailor's suggestions, Abrashoff drastically reduced tedious chores that provided little additional value.
* Communicate, communicate, communicate: The more Abrashoff communicated the plan, the better the crew's performance. His crew would eventually call him "Megaphone Mike," since they heard from him so often.
* Create discipline by focusing on purpose: Discipline skyrocketed when Abrashoff's crew believed that what they were doing was important.
* Listen aggressively: After learning that many sailors wanted to use the GI Bill, Abrashoff brought a test official aboard the ship-and held the SATs forty miles off the Iraqi coast.

From achieving amazing cost savings to winning the highest gunnery score in the Pacific Fleet, Captain Abrashoff's extraordinary campaign sent shock waves through the U.S. Navy. It can help you change the course of your ship, no matter where your business battles are fought.

Amazon.com Review
Other than the sobering fact that real lives are regularly at stake, running a navy ship is a lot like running a business: leaders of both must get the most out of their crews to operate at peak efficiency and complete the tasks at hand. As commander of the highly acclaimed USS Benfold, Captain D. Michael Abrashoff irrefutably demonstrated how progressive management can succeed at sea; in It's Your Ship, he translates his methods into an approach that can also be applied by land-bound captains of commerce and industry. Describing "the ideas and techniques that I used to win my sailors' trust and, eventually, their enthusiastic commitment to our joint goal of making our ship the best in the fleet," Abrashoff cites embarrassing failures along with subsequent triumphs to illuminate the keys to his accomplished 20-month tenure aboard the guided missile destroyer. His suggestions: lead by example; listen aggressively; communicate purpose and meaning; create a climate of trust; look for results, not salutes; take calculated risks; go beyond standard procedure; build up your people; generate unity; and improve your people's quality of life. While hardly original on the surface, Abrashoff's course should provide practical direction and inspiration for any leader hoping for similarly positive results in similarly rigid organizations. --Howard Rothman

About the Author
At the age of 36, the Navy selected Mike to become Commander of USS Benfold - at the time, the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges that faced him were staggering: Exceptionally low morale with unacceptably high turnover and poor performance results. Few thought that this ship could improve.
The solution was to establish a system of management techniques that Mike calls Grassroots Leadership. At the core of his leadership approach on Benfold was a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion, and by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers - with conviction and humility. "The most important thing that a captain can do is to see the ship through the eyes of the crew." According to Mike, Grassroots Leadership and his Leadership Roadmap is a practice that empowers every individual to share the responsibility of achieving excellence. "It's your ship," he was known to say. His former sailors to this day still remind him of it.
By every measure, these principles were able to achieve breakthrough results. Personnel turnover decreased to an unprecedented 1 percent. The rate of military promotions tripled, and the crew slashed operating expenses by 25 percent. Regarded as the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet, Benfold won the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness.
Mike recounted the leadership lessons from his turnaround of USS Benfold in It's Your Ship. First published in 2002, it quickly became a classic in the field of management books. It's a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Seller.
Prior to commanding USS Benfold, Mike served as the Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, the Honorable Dr. William J. Perry. He also helped draft the air defense plan for naval forces in the Persian Gulf in 1990, coinciding with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait; and served as the Executive Officer of the Cruiser Shiloh, where he deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against Iraq.
Mike, a 1982 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, is now an experienced entrepreneur and thought leader having founded GLS World, a leadership development company dedicated to helping organizations an individuals deliver the best results in a challenging global environment. You can visit his website at www.glsworld.com.

From AudioFile
Part leadership lesson and part memoir, this compact audio is a testament to the author's understanding of leadership in any large organization. His message is about helping people engage with their mission, which in his case was operating the 8,600-ton guided missile destroyer he commanded in the late 1990s. He advocates respecting people at every level, providing personalized training, and having an orderly system for rewarding high performers with more responsibility. Abrashoff is definitely in command and proud of his story but not lacking in humility and human perspective. Leaders of fast food restaurants and warships alike will be uplifted by his relentless efforts to care for the 310 men and women under his command. Great book on leadership, funny story how I found out about it.
By Mike M
Great book, I only bought it because an authority figure who fancies himself a tyrant according to everyone that works for him has this displayed prominently in his office (as if to warn us all that he's in charge, it's "his" ship). But after reading I realized it's more than that, actually it's better than that, it's about how to run a ship/office/business/school whatever, in an efficient manner, and it's not HIS ship, its everyone's ship. Where Abrashoff shares in the crew's failures and successes equally, this other authority figure takes no ownership of failures and takes almost all the credit for any successes that his subordinates achieve, and never rewards the subordinates for having achieved them.

Yea, I'm pretty sure the guy I'm talking about didn't read the book.

The information in the book is so good, relevant and easy to understand and apply
By Snoog
My boss let me borrow his copy when I asked for a leadership resource and before I even finished chapter 1 I was on Amazon for my own. The information in the book is so good, relevant and easy to understand and apply, it not only my boss' favorite leadership book, its mine. I have told so many other people in my company and professional associations about it. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone looking to break into management, in management at any level or if you just want a better understanding of what your management goes through and my do better.

Leadership messages with pauses for introspection
By WWS
My supervisor recommended this book and I can see why. Excellent leadership suggestions helped me evaluate my leadership tendencies and identify opportunities. The end of each section provides a one statement summary of the preceding section and provides a natura pause to help readers reflect on the content and their own experiences.

The messages apply for all organizational levels and I encourage others to read this book.

Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Janus Reprisal (Covert-One series), by Jamie Freveletti

With U.S. intelligence agencies wracked by internal power struggles and paralyzed by bureaucracy, the president was forced to establish his own clandestine group--Covert-One. It is activated only as a last resort, when the threat is on a global scale and time is running out.
THE JANUS REPRISAL
It begins with a terrorist attack. Covert-One operative Colonel Jon Smith is attending a conference in The Hague on infectious diseases, together with leading scientists and political figures from around the world. Without warning, the conference hotel is consumed in a bloodbath. Smith is caught in the crossfire and barely escapes . . . but not before discovering a picture of himself and two other targets in the pocket of one of the shooters.
But the hotel is not the only location under attack in The Hague. Bombs are going off at the train station, the airport, and the International Criminal Court, where Pakistani warlord Oman Dattar is being held while he's tried for crimes against humanity. In the resulting chaos, the prisoner escapes.
Dattar nurses a special hatred for the United States and its allies. With his freedom, and access to a mysterious new weapon, Dattar puts in motion a murderous, ambitious plot to exact his revenge and bring down the West once and for all--unless Covert-One can stop him.

The ninth Covert One novel
By TChris
More than ten years after Robert Ludlum's death, the Ludlum Industrial Complex continues to churn out novels featuring his name on the cover, often in a larger font than that given to the actual author. In this case, the largest font is reserved for Jason Bourne's name, although this isn't a Jason Bourne novel. The Janus Reprisal (excuse me, Robert Ludlum'sTM The Janus Reprisal) is part of the Covert One series, allegedly based on Ludlum's ideas (and possibly his notes), although Ludlum himself never authored a Covert One novel. As the ninth Covert One novel, The Janus Reprisal presumably has only a tangential connection to any notion that originated with Ludlum.

The Janus Reprisal is better than many factory-produced novels. Although it makes use of a well-worn plot (terrorists want to acquire a mutated virus so they can become bioterrorists and kill Americans), Jamie Freveletti adds some modest twists to the standard formula.

The story begins with a group of terrorists staging an improbably successful attack on a hotel in The Hague, moving from room to room and shooting the occupants. Coincidentally, Lt. Col. Jon Smith is a hotel guest. Smith is both a physician and an operative of the super-secret spy organization called Covert One. He's attending a meeting of the World Health Organization. Other attendees have stored biological agents in the hotel's safe. The terrorists make off with the biomaterials, and it is up to Smith to track them down.

Meanwhile, an old nemesis of Smith's -- Oman Dattar, a Pakistani unimaginatively nicknamed The Butcher -- escapes from a prison in The Hague, only to find that he's having financial woes. He needs money to pay his assassins, one of whom targets Smith at the hotel during the terrorist attack. The assassin stupidly carries Smith's picture with him, as well as the photos two other people, giving Smith a trail to follow.

Smith is a pleasant departure from other thriller/action heroes in that he doesn't possess superhuman strength or inexhaustible stamina (although he functions surprisingly well after being exposed to mustard gas). Smith is smart but specialized; he doesn't have the encyclopedic knowledge that diminishes the credibility of some thriller heroes. Beyond that, however, Smith is devoid of personality. The Janus Reprisal is all plot; characterization is absent.

Some aspects of the novel are all too familiar: Smith disarming a bomb by following instructions he receives over the telephone; Smith's reliance on a genius computer hacker who is a social misfit; multiple shootouts in which professional killers never manage to disable or kill the hero; a mole in the CIA; a plan to kill everyone in Manhattan; using a woman as bait to flush out the terrorist (which always results in the woman being captured ... don't thriller heroes ever read thrillers?). The action sequence at the end becomes difficult to believe but it's not as outrageous as some other thrillers I've read.

Notwithstanding the story's familiarity, The Janus Reprisal is enjoyable. The workmanlike prose is clean; the pace is quick. Despite being used as bait, the woman who has been targeted by Dattar is strong and resilient, not the typically helpless female character of old-school thrillers. The plan to wipe out Manhattan has some original elements. The plan is far-fetched, but no more so than is common in modern action-based thrillers. The Janus Reprisal isn't by any reasonable standard a first-rate thriller, but it's a fun time-killer, significantly above the norm for a factory-produced novel.

A bit disappointing
By Michael G Kurilla
Relative to other Covert One stories, this is one of the weaker ones to date. The opening setup is somewhat cryptic with a tad too much formulaic follow through. The middle portion of the story is the best part with classic Covert One action and pacing. The basic premise which concerns a greedy and non-fanatical terrorist is out to somehow shakedown the USA with a specialty designed bioweapon. The standard elements of trying to find the top man, while eluding all the hired assasins and avoiding friendly intelligence and law enforcement personnel, are there and the pacing is nicely done. There are simply too many little things that either are plain wrong or don't make sense. The opening scene is still opaque as to rationale. Let's see, I'm rampaging through a hotel killing everyone in order to create a distraction while I steal something, but I'll send a special assasin already sick with my bioweapon to attempt to remove someone in the same hotel specifically. And why was Peter Howell targeted at all? The addition of poison gas to the mix was also a bit over the top. The female financial wizard who was the love child of Donald Trump and someone with Asperger's was confusing throughout; her actions never felt genuine. Finally, the King Midas character just made no sense whatsoever (who builds a Fort Knox in the worst part of town?) other than to congregate all the bad apples in one place for the final denouement.

A couple of notes for the author: 1) international conferences on dangerous pathogens (speaking from personal experience) are not show and tell events. Scientists do not bring their latest germs with them in the flesh so to speak. In addition, even if they did want to transfer the agent to another lab, they do not carry the item on their person, nor would anyone even think to store them in a hotel safe (especially the hotel itself); 2) can we work towards evil doers that are intelligent enough to not require high level double agents (as in this case with both CIA and NYPD) in order to make the whole plan work? - it's just too lazy; 3) no scientist is going to look through a microscope and "see" avain flu; at best with an electron microscope you might guess myxovirus family, but that's about it; and no one without a DNA sequence is going to guess flu when a bacterium is already present. I know it's science fiction, but it must have some plausibility or it's just fantasy.

Thank you so much!
By Rita Book Daly
I've been a fan of Robert Ludlum ever since his first novel was published, and selfishly grieved the day he died because there would be no more great action novels. I was so wrong! Jamie Freveletti has successfully captured and continued Ludlum's gift for a strong storyline with familiar characters that is more than just opporunities for shootouts and fights. The Janus Reprisal is a great read and is now a part of my permanent Ludlum library.

Amazon.com Review
When Robert Kincaid drives through the heat and dust of an Iowa summer and turns into Francesca Johnson's farm lane looking for directions, the world-class photographer and the Iowa farm wife are joined in an experience of uncommon truth and stunning beauty that will haunt them forever. The romantic classic of the 1990's.

From Publishers Weekly
Quietly powerful and thoroughly credible, Waller's first novel (he previously wrote two books of essays) describes the profound love between a photographer and an Iowa farmer's wife who, together for only four days, never lose their feelings for each other. In August 1965, 52-year-old divorce Robert Kincaid packs his pickup truck and travels to Iowa's Madison County, the location of seven covered bridges he is to photograph for National Geographic . There, he asks directions of Francesca Johnson, alone at home while her husband and two children visit the Illinois State Fair. Initially, neither Robert nor Francesca expects their random encounter to lead to seduction, yet their mutual desire is undeniable. Waller tells their story as though it were nonfiction, claiming to have heard about Francesca from her children after her death, read her journals, seen Robert's relics of those four days and interviewed a jazz musician who knew the photographer. Scenes between the lovers are movingly evoked and moments with Francesca, who celebrates her birthday 22 years later by reflecting on her brief time with Robert, are particularly poignant. An erotic, bittersweet tale of lingering memories and forsaken possibilities. Photos of covered bridges serve as illustrations. 35,000 first printing.

From Library Journal
This is the story of four days that change forever the lives of two lonely people. Robert Kincaid is a roving photographer for National Geographic and Francesca Johnson is a housewife whose marriage suffers from a lack of romance. Francesca's family is out of town when Kincaid arrives on the scene, and the pair are instantly attracted. They soon become lovers, and Kincaid asks Francesca to run away with him, but she refuses. Francesca stays loyal to her family, and memories of Kincaid are all that remain. Contrived, unrealistic dialog detracts from a well-plotted, quick, and pleasant read. For larger popular fiction collections.

New book ... The Bridges of Madison County
By M. Keane
This book makes a perfect gift for a woman -- young or old. I think it would be great for an intergenerational family read and discussion. In its beautifully written text it allows the reader to enter into the life of the character Francesca, and it absolves the readers from having to strive for someone else's notion of morality or perfection.

Read it with your daughters when they come of age and think about marriage. Read it with your girlfriends as it surely reflects life as it is and as we dream it to be. Read it with your mother for a great conversation starter. Just read it and enjoy!!!

Prince of Ayodhya - Book One: The Ramayana, by Ashok K. Banker

Embodying all the elements of a classic epic fantasy, the ancient Hindu mythological tale The Ramayana is full of sweeping adventure, gods and monsters, and a questing prince. Now, author Ashok K. Banker adapts The Ramayana into an impressive epic fantasy. The hero of the first book is young Rama, heir to the throne of Ayodhya. When two powerful rakshasa-demons who have raised a formidable army of anti-gods-plan to take over the land of humans as well, the legendary seer-mage Vishwamitra is forced out of a 240-year-long retreat to call upon Rama for his help in the eternal battle of Good against Evil.

From Publishers Weekly
This retelling of the ancient Hindu classic, The Ramayana, marking Indian author Banker's U.S. debut, makes an odd but compelling book. Many untranslated words and phrases mix with occasional modern terms, but Banker usually just lushly embellishes the classic tale of a war between absolute Good and Evil. Teenaged prince Rama is everything a culture hero should be, incredibly fit, skilled and pious. He's given the responsibility of saving not just his native city, glorious Ayodhya, but the whole of humanity from the schemes of an army of demons and their allies. And so, with the mighty seer-mage Vishwamitra and his only relatively less heroic half-brother, Laskshman, Rama sets out on a heroic journey. At first, readers will notice the intensity of every scene and the absence of any inner life for characters who, whether gloriously wonderful or noxiously monstrous, don't so much converse as make melodramatic speeches at each other. But then you realize how easy it is to turn the pages. It's a ripping good yarn, though Banker lacks Tolkien's knack for varying tone to avoid monotony. Nor is he interested in rationalizing myth into subtle, ironic SF, as Roger Zelazny did in Lord of Light. In its approach to storytelling, this novel resembles E.E. "Doc" Smith's clumsy but rousing Lensmen saga, showing how gusto and a vivid imagination can spruce up very old themes.

An Instant Classic
By not4prophet
"In a masterwork as imaginative as the greatest creations of J. R. R. Tolkien..." Oh, how many times have we heard that one before? Our bookstore shelves are clogged with would-be epics churned out by talentless hacks who can barely assemble a sentence, much less a novel. Given this profusion of overhyped, underwhelming crap, it's understandable that many readers might be skeptical of a newcomer fantasy author touted as a grandmaster. This time, however, there's no need. The claims are true, the talent is real, the result is stunning.
"Prince of Ayodhya" is, of course, an epic fantasy set in ancient India. It follows Maharaja Dasaratha, ruler of the mighty Kingdom of Ayodhya, and his three wives and four sons as they receive disturbing news from the seer Vishwamitra: the Demon Lord Ravana has been gathering an army of hellish beings in preparation for an assault on the mortal plain. The cast here is huge, but Ashok Banker juggles his characters well. Virtually all of them take on the larger-than-life personalities of epic heroes and villains, leaving an unforgettable stamp on the story rather than just going through the motions. One reviewer complained that the characters were too simplistic. It may seem that way at the start, but new layers of complexity unfold as the story progresses.
The best way to describe this book is to say that Banker gives his tale the scope of an epic. This is a story not just about big characters, but about big cities, big journeys, big armies, big battles, and a promise of even bigger events to come. Here we actually see not just a few people, but instead an entire nation being drawn into an expanding battle. This author has also mastered the little details of writing. His ability to evoke setting and mood through little details of sight, sound, and smell matches the best in the genre. His handling of pacing matches his talent at writing. There's never a slow moment in this book, and character development scenes are woven into the narrative so well that they fit perfectly.
Is this book perfect? No. Banker does have a few problems, such as an obsession with putting somewhat cheesy cliffhangers at the end of every single chapter and some chapters that are too short and choppy. But these are minor mistakes that barely put a dent in such a tremendous accomplishment. Overall, I give "Prince of Ayodhya" a hearty recommendation, and I can't wait for "Siege of Mithila".

Banker's creation will become a classic
By A Customer
Yet another version of Ramayana, the great Indian epic, is well underway. The epic is now 3000 years old and has inspired different versions at different times in its long life. In Ashok K. Banker's rendering, the novelty is that the ancient tale gets a modernized version by someone who has passionately studied, researched and lived with the material for the past 20 years.
Banker's Prince Of Ayodhya is just the length of as it should be -- not abridged as some have been. Neatly divided into seven volumes, each comprising more than 500 pages, the epic is being published serially in UK, USA, Germany and many Commonwealth countries as well as in several languages.
What is it that has attracted publishers around the world? For one thing, the epic has a simple, long and intriguing storyline, which still resonates. It is permeated with fantasy material that is appealing and irresistible in its own way. It is perhaps this fantasy quotient which publishers readily reckon to be a perfect fit for the mass market. Then, of course, perhaps it's more simple than any of that: a great story is a great story in any language, at any time.
Prince of Ayodhya , the first volume in Ashok K. Banker's Ramayana -based series, opens with Rama, the prince, awakening after a bad dream on a moonlit night in his bedroom chamber. In just a few deft strokes, the author gives us a vivid idea of the prince -- his looks, education and attitude -- the state of Ayodhya, the soft-flowing Sarayu river, the peaceful ambiance in and around the state, and the unseen dangers looming over the country and its people.
With the atmosphere and tone perfectly set, the reader is led straight into the great tale. Preparations are underway for coronation of the young prince on his 16th birthday. Two sages at the gate of the palace, one following the other, each one claiming that he is Viswamitra, the seer-mage, a sage among sages, a seer that other seers look up to reverentially. The old king Dasaratha is puzzled, failing to recognize the real one.
The real Vishwamitra has to prove his bona fides and utters a mantra to change the impostor back into his true shape. The other one was a demon, a shape-shifting Asura, sent by Ravana, the king of demons, who wants to destroy Ayodhya. The grateful king offers to pay anything the great sage asks of him. Vishwamitra asks for the services of Ram to accompany him on a mission. The sage says that the mission is important, as it would save Ayodhya as well. After much dithering, the king agrees to send Rama along with the sage, but another of the king's four sons, being very much attached to his elder brother, follows them as well.
It's a difficult terrain with impassable roads. They have a harrowing time trudging their way first on foot and then on a kind of boat to reach the sages' place at Vayanak-van. The sage empowers the two princes and prepares them for the fight. The demons, being aware of Rama's presence, launch an all out attack to kill the two brothers. True to the sages' prescience, Ram fights valiantly and kills anybody and everybody that dares attack them.
Banker's Ramayana is an elegant, robust and highly textured account of Rama's heroic but checkered life, told with great taste, delicacy and imagination. The author's style has a sharp audio-visual character and that makes for a delectable read as well. The narrative never sags or comes across as hackneyed or trite.
Non-Indian readers shouldn't be dismayed at the free and rampant use of Indian words in the text. Though they might seem a bit indigestible at first, they ultimately contribute hugely to the ambiance of Banker's book.
I look forward to reading the next volumes of this modern Ramayana. If Prince Of Ayodhya is a good sampling, it seems likely that Banker's creation will become a classic.

i am an ABCD (ha, ha - indians will get it) but i am very familiar with the Ramayana, having read it in various editions that are true to the original sanskrit. i also watched the tv series as well (yuk, too histrionic).
all i have to say is this. the Ramayana was first spoken. i'm sure when the Ramayana was written down in Sanskrit, it was a sacrilege. when Tulsidas wrote the Ramayana in Hindi, that was considered a sacrilege. Then at some point it was translated into English. When it was made into a comic book, it was considered a sacrilege. When they made it into a tv show, egads! it was a mortifying sacrilege.
here's what a lot of the naysayers don't get. People aren't even reading the Ramayana anymore! so many of my friends here in the US are CLUELESS about it. they know nothing about it. they are real american-born-confused-desis.
Mr. Banker's retelling of this story does not hurt it. it is an excellent job and it will get more of our kids to read again. hopefully, creative artists will also create a video game for it and a movie, a la Harry Potter.
what people don't realize is that the Ramayana is a mixture of religion, mythology, and history. we have to get past the mythology, which can't be proven. we have to get past the history, which was 1000s of years ago. we have to aspire to the divinity. Let's understand that Rama had to make some incredibly difficult choices in his life. He is the most heroic, virtuous man who may have ever lived. Let's keep his glory alive.
People, get over it. Please! this is a great book.
Thank you, Mr. Banker
