From Publishers Weekly
Bestselling Salvatore (Starless Night) returns with a pleasant fantasy novel, notable mainly for its attention to detail. Salvatore describes and choreographs battle scenes better than any other contemporary fantasist, as this first tale of the adventures of Luthien Bedwyr amply demonstrates. The naive Luthien plunges into a series of events, beginning with a self-imposed exile from his father's kingdom of Bedwyr, which has fallen "under the iron rule of King Greensparrow of Avon," that test his mettle and increase the political stakes for which he must fight. As Salvatore carefully and exquisitely builds his narrative, Luthien, along with the charming Oliver de Burrows?self-described thief with the obligatory heart of gold?finds his actions becoming more consequential, especially in his Robin Hood-like guise as the "Crimson Shadow." The tale is satisfactorily resolved, but with enough matters left hanging to suggest that readers looking forward to a sequel may well be rewarded.

From Library Journal
Young Luthien Bedwyr's blind loyalty to his father, the Earl of Bedwydrin, turns to contempt when he realizes that his father is powerless against the agents of the evil Wizard-King who rules their land. Taking to the road to fight for justice, Luthien acquires a roguish (and diminutive) highway halfling companion, a magical cape, and a reputation as "The Crimson Shadow." The author of the "Dark Elf" series tries his hand at swashbucking fantasy with this fast-paced series opener. Although an overabundance of swordplay leaves marginal room for character development, the heroes' escapades pave the way for future adventures. Libraries looking to satisfy a demand for fantasy adventure may want to consider this title.

From Booklist
Salvatore expands his fantasy output with what is clearly the first volume in a projected series that borrows generously from the Robin Hood legend and the Matter of Britain and tricks them out skillfully in modern fantasy genre conventions. The virtuous land of Eriador has been enslaved, and a young nobleman finds himself suddenly no longer on safe terms with its masters. Taking to the road, he becomes a successful outlaw known for distributing stolen goods to the poor and leaving behind only the mark of his shadow in crimson (look for the series to be called The Crimson Shadow). As he does, he also becomes a symbol of rebellion against the overlords. Briskly paced, with touches of wry wit, the yarn is easy to recommend to fantasy fans eager to start another saga. Even for a young reader, I think this book would be too predictable and wooden. I feel like Salvatore dumbed it down too much for his young readers.

Great writing from Salvatore
By Jack Smith
Love the Crimson Shadow. Salvatore is a master of fantasy writing. If you've never read any of his books and a fantasy lover then you're missing out on one of the best and in my opinion the best fantasy writer alive today. Try the Cleric Quintet, or any of his Dark Elf book's. The only problem is there's so many lol.

Fun Story you know already...but told very well!
By PraeValien
As others have stated, you may not be tricked or surprised by the plot, but it doesn't matter if you enjoy the unfolding story. If you are a Drizzt, Companions, or an R.A. Salvatore fan - have no fear a jolly-good read is here!
