#1 bestselling author Nicholas Sparks's new novel is at once a compelling family drama and a heartrending tale of young love. Seventeen year old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alientated from her parents, especially her father...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story of love on many levels--first love, love between parents and children -- that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that love can break our hearts...and heal them.

Sparks's legions of admirers will relish this emotional roller coaster ride narrated in two voices. Pepper Binkley and Scott Sowers alternately read sections of the story. Binkley portrays the female characters, including 17-year-old Ronnie Miller, who seeks to reconnect with her estranged father during summer vacation in Wilmington, North Carolina. While Binkley's voice is suitably youthful for the teenaged Ronnie and her Southern accents are consistent, she often recites in a stilted manner. Sowers presents the story from the points of view of Ronnie's father and the other male characters. His deep, serious voice imbues Steve's quest for religion and family with purpose. Background piano music underscores the wistful yet uplifting mood of the story. C.A. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Only made it to 31%

I've read several of this authors books and would rate all of them that I've read 5stars till this one as Ronnie the MC is way way too unlikeable, though that's no where near a strong enough term for her. Unfortunately I can't use the term I'd like in a review. I understand what the author was going for but he took it way way way too far, even stating it that way is the understatement of year! It saddens me to give this kind of review to an author of this caliber as this is the only book of his I couldn't give a 5 star rating to.

... first i personally believe that the books are always better than the movies

I watched the movie first i personally believe that the books are always better than the movies. Dont get me wrong miley and liam did amazing work. But this book blew me away. Its raw emotion is undeniable. Sparks is incredibly talented and can make you fall in love with anything he writes. Truly impressed.

As always, the best one yet!
By MawChris
I eagerly anticipate each new book by Nicholas Sparks. Each is better than the last. The Last Song is even better because the characters had more in-depth development than ever, and made for a longer story. I always want to get to the end, yet hope the story goes on and on. I have all this author's books, including the one with his brother. I treasure each one and will pick one at random to reread. His characters stay in your heart and in your mind for days afterwards. I truly hope that the author chooses to do a follow-up as he did with several of his other story lines. I hope the movie storyline stays truer to the book than some of the others that have been done. I like Miley Cyrus, but am having trouble imagining her as the heroine in this book. I visualize Ronnie as being of a bigger body type than the slightly built Miley.
