Amazon.com Review
So where do you want to go tomorrow? That's the question Bill Gates tries to answer in Business @ the Speed of Thought. Gates offers a 12-step program for companies wanting to do business in the next millennium. The book's premise: Thanks to technology, the speed of business is accelerating at an ever-increasing rate, and to survive, it must develop an infrastructure--a "digital nervous system"--that allows for the unfettered movement of information inside a company. Gates writes that "The most meaningful way to differentiate your company from your competition ... is to do an outstanding job with information. How you gather, manage, and use information will determine whether you win or lose."

The book is peppered with examples of companies that have already successfully engineered information networks to manage inventory, sales, and customer relationships better. The examples run from Coca-Cola's ability to download sales data from vending machines to Microsoft's own internal practices, such as its reliance on e-mail for company-wide communication and the conversion of most paper processes to digital ones (an assertion that seems somewhat at odds with the now-infamous "by hand on sheets of paper" method of tracking profits that was revealed during Microsoft's antitrust trial).

While Gates breaks no new ground--dozens of authors have been writing about competing on a digital playing field for some time, among them Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian in Information Rules and Patricia Seybold in Customers.com--businesses that want a wakeup call may find this book a ringer. With excerpts in Time magazine, a dedicated Web site, and an all-out media assault, Microsoft is working hard to push Business @ the Speed of Thought into the national dialogue, and for many it will be difficult to see the book as anything but a finely tuned marketing campaign for the forthcoming versions of Windows NT and MS Office. Nevertheless, as Gates has shown time and time again, him, Microsoft, and perhaps even this book you may ignore at your own peril. --Harry C. Edwards

Sharing Is Good, But What Should Be Shared?
By Donald Mitchell
One of the primary benefits of a human nervous system is to allow the senses and the mind to be in close contact. This is most helpful to alerting us to opportunities and dangers so we respond more quickly.

When the nervous sytem is working well, this is great. Disease can cause these signals to be scrambled, and the individual fares poorly.

In this book, Mr. Gates argues persuasively for having a digital counterpart to the human nervous system. What he fails to focus on enough is how to identify what data to capture, how to turn it into knowledge, and how to turn knowledge into timely action.

For those subjects, you'll have to read Bill Jensen's book on Simplicity. If you only have time to read one or the other, I suggest Simplicity over Business @ the Speed of Thought.

The wired world easily overwhelms. Timely e-mails can turn into hundreds of e-mails. Data can turn into overwhelming quantities of confusion. Without the skills and tools to do data mining, the digital nervous sytem may just make things worse. Think about it.

A reason for being concerned about this point is the history of Microsoft itself, usually having to buy or copy innovations by others to advance its technology . . . usually arriving after targeted dates with software that crashes all the time . . . usually arriving with software that is so filled with unecessary features that it runs more slowly than typewriters did in the predigital age.

My sense from a recent site visit to Dell Computer is that Dell is far ahead of Microsoft in communicating and acting on information. I suggest you read Direct from Dell instead of this book if you only have time to read two books.

From a man who is supposed to be a great visionary of technology, I was quite disappointed in this book. I only saw a flawed vision that was more backward looking than forward looking.

Bill Gates continues to lead the field
By Lloyd L. Lehn
This is a must book for anyone who wants to know how to automate the processes in his company. Knowledge Mangement and Customer Relations Management are buzz words. This book eliminates those buzz words and gets down to the baisics of what really matters in a company and keeps the spin machines away. Each chapter is loaded with useful ideas often in the form of examples from real industry. Each chapter ends with a list of issues which the reader should think about in his own company. I have read several parts of this book multiple times.

Can the World's Foremost Copier Be a Visionary?
By A Customer
Microsoft is renowned for watching trends, finding the best provider of new ideas and services, and buying/copying that innovation. You might call the company, the world's greatest fast follower. With the tremendous market power of its installed base of Windows, the company has moved profitably in a lot of new directions. IBM did the same before the Justice Department made the company allow anyone to use its operating sytem at modest cost. IBM also made lots of money. Was IBM a visionary company at the time? Absolutely not. Does Microsoft's success mean that it is a visionary company now? Probably not. For example, Gate's view of a paperless, electronic world proved to be a real problem during the company's recent antitrust trial with the U.S. government. Electronic records of aggressive behavior and intent kept showing up to contradict Gate's live testimony. Also remember that Gates thought the Internet was a nonstarter until quite recently, when it began its come-from-behind charge against Netscape. Specifically, the weakness of the vision is that it makes a company likely to be too internally focused. You can communicate so well with one another that you do not communicate so well with the customers and others who are important to you. I personally found the vision of Direct from Dell and Customer.com to be much more relevant. Read this book with caution, but do read it because we all need to know where Microsoft plans to take us. We'll have to go there anyway, to some extent.

The Meaning of Ichiro: The New Wave from Japan and the Transformation of Our National Pastime, by Robert Whiting

Matsui... Nomo... Sasaki... Ichiro... the so-called American "National Pastime" has developed a decidedly Japanese flair. Indeed, in this year's All-Star game, two of the starting American League outfielders were from Japan. And for the third straight year, Ichiro - the fleet-footed Seattle Mariner - received more votes for the All-Star game than any other player in the game today. Some 15 years ago, in the bestseller "You Gotta Have Wa," Robert Whiting examined how former American major league ballplayers tried to cope with a different culture while playing pro ball in Japan. Now, Whiting reverses his field and reveals how select Japanese stars have come across the Pacific to play in the big leagues. Not only have they had to deal with the American way of life, but they have individually changed the game in dramatic fashion.

From Publishers Weekly
Whiting (You Gotta Have It) offers an intriguing glimpse into Japanese culture and the way baseball has shaped society in that country, as players wrestle with their desire to compete against the world's best while honoring the rigid mores of their homeland. The book isn't so much about Seattle Mariners star Ichiro Suzuki as it is about every Japanese player who made the jump to the U.S. before and after him, how they fared and what role they played in America's pastime-like the aloof Kasuhisa Ishii, the flamboyant "spaceman" Tsuyoshi Shinjo and the underachieving Hideki Irabu, famously derided by Yankee owner George Steinbrenner as a "fat, pussy toad." A few have succeeded, some have failed and many still toil in the U.S. Equally intriguing is super-agent Don Nomura, who found the loopholes in the Japanese players' contracts (league rules were translated from American minor league baseball's from the 1930s) that enabled the pioneers to make the break for Major League Baseball. Whiting effectively sprinkles in Japanese words to explain and illustrate principles and customs, and his extensive knowledge of both baseball and culture in that country makes for a compelling read. Details such as Hideki Matsui's taste for adult movies, the real genesis of his Godzilla nickname and Hideo Nomo's demand for large payments for print and TV interviews back in Japan add flavor, and reportage on Kazuo Matsui signing with the Mets this past off-season keeps the book up to the minute.

From Booklist
The author of You Gotta Have Wa (1989), about the nature of Japanese baseball, wraps his occasionally purple prose around first Seattle Mariner star Ichiro Suzuki and then other Japanese players who came to the big leagues in this country. He also examines American players and managers who went to play in Japan, such as Bobby Valentine and Alfonso Soriano. Ichiro (tellingly known by his one name only, like Cher or Bono) led the most Japanese of lives, trained by his father from earliest childhood and then in the Japanese style of baseball drill, which closely resembles boot camp. Ichiro's almost magical style and speed are grounded in that training but were allowed to blossom only when he was free of it. Despite reading a bit repetitiously, this collection of essays delivers considerable insight into the near-opposite American and Japanese approaches to baseball and to the culture of the game. The Japanese effect on Major League Baseball
By Jack Fitzgerald
Robert Whiting has written several books about Japanese baseball, including "You Gotta Have Wa" and "The Chrysanthemum and the Bat." His latest effort, "The Meaning of Ichiro..." is a good bookend for the other two, in that here he details Japanese players finding their way to the U.S. Major Leagues. The title is a bit misleading, because the book is not strictly about Ichiro, but also deals with success stories such as Hideo Nomo, Hideki Matsui, Kazuo Matsui and the challenges to a player like Hideki Irabu.

Whiting includes a lot of interesting history, some of it rehashed from earlier volumes, but necessary here if one is to read this as a stand alone piece. He details the birth of baseball in Japan, how it became Japanized with the intense training, and some early experiences in cross-cultural play with teams from the United States. There is also some philosophy, for it is important to understand the Japanese culture and mindset, as well as the almost martial training that players endure in Japan. All very fascinating stuff.

The bulk of the book focuses on those players since 1995 who have made their way across the Pacific to play for teams in North America. The stories about Ichiro, Nomo and Hideki Matsui are near-mythical, and one has to wonder how much truth was embellished by their families and coaches. But aren't the stories of players of this caliber always near-mythical?

While the prose reads well, and Whiting is very knowledgeable about the Japanese game, I found numerous factual errors. Ichiro was born in 1973, but the book had him entering junior high school in 1975! Now that's precocious. Probably a typo, but in a baseball book, errors with dates and stats are killers. Another error had the Yankees winning the 1995 World Series, when they were ousted in the Division Series by the Seattle Mariners. Yeah, it's nit-picky, but it does make one wonder about the other stats and whether the fact-checkers and editors did their jobs well or not.

The other knock that I have is that Whiting made some references about Seattle that sounded like he has never even been to the city, or that his information is terribly dated. Watch those adjectives. He referred to "rain-soaked Safeco Field" possibly without knowing that it has a retractable roof, and that during the summer, Seattle is one of the drier places to be in the U.S. and way more so than in rainy, muggy Japan. Check out Art Thiel's "Out of Left Field" for the story of baseball in Seattle.

Still, it's a great read and provides many insights in how the Japanese players perceive the North American game. The biggest thing to take away is that players in MLB should bone up on their fundamentals, kind of like the NBA players need to brush up against their international competition. The world is catching up...

A Cross-Cultural Study
By Kit Houseman
Following the out-of-print The Chrysanthemum and the Bat (1977) and You Gotta Have Wa (1990), The Meaning of Ichiro can be looked at as the third in a trilogy of Robert Whiting books on Japanese baseball. (He also did an as told to book with Warren Cromartie). In it, Whiting pursues the next logical step, looking at the impact Japanese players have had on the American game, and how this has changed the relationship between the two countries in terms of society in general as well as in the baseball world. Whiting examines the make-up of various Japanese players and how it affected their success in the American big leagues. Besides Ichiro, he discusses Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Hideki Irabu, Tsuyoshi Shinjo, and Hideki Matsui, among others. He also looks at how foreign managers have fared in Japan, paying particular attention to Bobby Valentine?s tenure as skipper of the Chiba Lotte Marines. Whiting points out that for many years, Americans played in Japan, but no Japanese played in the U.S and he supports a conclusion that the emergence of Japanese stars in the major leagues has been a good thing for the relationship between the two countries. This is good reading for those who are interested in international baseball and how foreign relations are effected outside of strictly diplomatic circles.

A timely sequel to a classic
By Aaron Ping
In this book, Whiting revisits the experience of Japanese baseball, only this time through the eyes of Japanese players playing in the US. The biographies are well-written and focused as Whiting chooses to elaborate only on the most interesting or most pivotal points of each player's experience. But perhaps most impressive is Whiting's balanced understanding of race, racism, and nationalism on both the Japanese and American sides of the Pacific. Whiting doesn't pull any punches when addressing these issues but then again he doesn't hit harder than is warranted.

I particularly liked this book because it covers the period of time during which I've been a resident of Japan (96 to present). While the earlier title "You Gotta Have Wa" was an excellent read, it felt a bit dated to me as it descibes an earlier period I never experienced firsthand. Japan has changed a bit since the bubble days and in this book Whiting manages to concisely convey many of those changes through several viewpoints. I highly recommend it even if you've already read "Wa."

He'll always be in our hearts....
By Lisa M. Vviviano
For anyone who knew of Bo (and if you have to ask Bo who, don't bother reading on) or watched him coach for the two decades at the Big House, you will love this book. This is a behind the scenes look at what you always wished you were a fly on the wall to observe. This gives you another view of what the man was really like. I actually read about some of the players I knew when I attended. Most importantly, it shows the kind of human being Bo was: the BEST! This will make you laugh, cry, and scream "Go Blue" with every chapter.

a throwback to how football coaches are supposed to be !
By A Customer
I was very fortunate to read a book that gave you a feelimg that there are few football coaches out there who can coach football the old fashion way: physical discipline, honesty, and being a great motivator. For Bo to share the stories about Woody Hayes was just awesome. I feel that Bo went thru a great experince in his life time. I have read this book probably 10 times and I like what he critcizes about the NCAA making these ridiculous standards. May God bless him.

A "Must Have Reference" For Effective Networking!
By A Customer
The Personal Touch, contributes to Terrie William's encouragement of establishing and maintaining relationships. Professionally, or personally, this book suggests practical methods and opportunites to enhance relationships. She shares experiences that enable new business owners to avoid mistakes commonly and frequently made, or neglected.
I recently reread the book to prepare for a networking event. My confidence was heightened, and my preparedness to meet my objectives was concisley manuevered.
It's simple, basic and easy to read, yet filled with a wealth of constructive information that will enhance lives in regard to appreciating others . Apply her recommendations, and the results are clearly and immediately noticed.
I had the opportunity to meet and hear her speak recently in New Orleans. Her personality and speech demonstrated the etiquette of professionalism with a friendly and personalable touch.

Networking in the '90's
By A. C. Shellhase
Terrie certainly has a breezy writing style that goes a long way toward making this book an easy read.
If you've ever wondered whether the small touches are worth it to your customers (and thus to your business), then Terrie's book will certainly prove that they're essential.
Her company, the Terrie Williams Agency, is a PR firm that represents some very big names like Eddie Murphy and the late Miles Davis. This is a personal story of how she changed careers from social work to PR with the help of many people along the way.
It's the stories that make the book easy to read. It's those same stories that illustrate that doing the extra, the unexpected, the gracious is what will set your business apart from the rest.
If I learned nothing from this book, it's the importance of names. Knowing them, spelling them correctly, and using them often. Terrie is especially adamant about it since her name is misspelled often. She also emphasizes that you can't know a person's sex by their name, so make sure you find out.
She practices what she preaches because she must name every person she knows AND every person who's ever helped her somewhere in this book.
Interspersed in the stories are the suggestions, tips, tricks, and hints that make the book valuable. Things like: returning phone calls within 24 hours; sending thank-you notes; making gifts personal to the person you're buying for; introducing those who are unknown to the known (especially when dealing with celebrities); helping without expecting something in return; the value of your reputation; and much more.
This book would make a good companion to Harvey Mackay's book "Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty". Harvey has even more suggestions than Terrie and he goes into specifics (such as how he's set up multiple Rolodexes to keep track of people). Harvey's of the same school about the importance of getting to know people, staying in touch with them, and doing things for them without being asked.
Since networking is a fact of life today, whether online or in person, if you've never read a networking how-to book, consider this one.
If you can only buy one, buy Harvey and borrow Terrie from the library. But, you should read both.
Note: Terrie used selected (mild) curse words throughout the text. Though it seems to be her style and her way of speaking to her reading audience, I found them distasteful. We all let lose with choice words at times, but I find it extremely unprofessional to use them in a business situation. This book is a reflection of her business and it's not flattering.

Personal Touch
By Annie R Holloman
I really enjoyed the book written by Terrie Williams. Ms. Williams brought out much needed things that we humans of today seem to have forgotten.
If more people would adhere to the principles of personal touch, the world would be a better place to live and we as humans would not be under so much stress.
One of my Teachers once wrote in my autograph book upon graduation the saying,"To suceed, you must proceed to exceed". I think Ms. Williams said that many times in her book in many different ways.
She made me think back to basics, and that "Common sense is no longer common. Personal Touch could be sub titled "Good News". Which means Gospel.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who strives to be sucessful.

Amazon.com Review
In Down 42nd Street, Marc Eliot offers a fascinating and pugnacious history of what may be the most famous street in the United States--or at least the most famously decadent one. "By 1980, [New York's] fabled Manhattan crossroads had become ground zero for the manufacture, exhibition, and distribution of pornography, drug dealing, pedophilia, prostitution, and violent street crime," he writes. Eliot describes 42nd Street's development over time, and he's not afraid to go after a few sacred cows. Here's what he says about the "greatest generation" right after the Second World War: "GIs returning to the U.S. via New York City's harbors and ports were point men in the postwar sex and drug revolution." Today, of course, 42nd Street is a very different place, thanks to a conscious cleanup effort that has brought in Disney and other corporations. Eliot views this trend with a distaste that other may not feel: by the end of the 20th century, he notes with irritation, "42nd Street had become a horizontal Statue of Liberty, a place native New Yorkers avoided like Yellow Fever." All in all, Down 42nd Street is an excellent piece of opinionated urban history told with verve. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
A rambunctious social and political history of Times Square and "the deuce" street slang for 42nd Street covers a lot of territory, but makes its points with wit and an insider's keen insight. Eliot, co-author of Erin Brockovitch's forthcoming advice book Take It from Me! and of Barry White's Love Unlimited, piles up fascinating historic details, from Revolutionary War battles on the nascent site of 42nd Street to the building of Grand Central Terminal; from the growth of New York's theater district to how the business-oriented Committee of 14 attacked prostitution, censored theaters and nearly killed Broadway from 1904 to 1930. Explaining how the street became famous for sophistication and then for sex, grime and crime, Eliot is best when focusing on the economic developments that shaped the area: Vanderbilt bullying city officials to build Grand Central; Ed Koch's deals with developers for redevelopment in the 1980s that destroyed many historic theaters; the Gambino crime syndicate's lost claim on the area to "a rodent of a different sort" the Disney corporation. Comfortable and conversant with a wide range of cultural artifacts and events (Dead End Kids movies, the changing censorship laws of the 1950s and '60s, changing fast food habits of New Yorkers), Eliot paints a lively portrait of urban life. While the book would have been helped by drawing upon newer, groundbreaking critical works such as Samuel R. Delaney's Times Square Red, Times Square Blue, it does present a popular and engaging look at "the crossroads of the world."

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Best-selling biographer Eliot takes us on a walk down New York City's Forty-second Street, providing historical perspective and insight into the roles played in its development by many famous politicians and celebrities. The author traces the events that make the two-and-one-half-mile trek from the East River to the Hudson River a fascinating journey, from the East Side, which is the daytime home of industry giants, to west of Times Square, an area known for sex, drugs, and lack of police presence. Three fascinating events are explored in depth: the battle to keep Grand Central Station from the wrecking ball; how attracting Disney led to the revitalization of the theater district; and the convoluted tale over many years of politicians, Mob bosses, society figures, and vested interests who struggled to dominate the West Side, which was as colorful as it was deadly. For all those who love New York or are interested in city economics, planning, and development, this narrative proves that truth can be more compelling than fiction. Mary Whaley

Captures Feel of the Street, Despite some Muddy History
By Ricky Hunter
Marc Elliot's Down 42nd Street (Sex, Money, Culture, and Politics at the Crossoads of the World) may frustrate some history mavens looking for exact truth but will be a thrill to anyone who wants to read a book that truly captures the spirit of 42nd Street. The first part of the book is the historical buildup to the author's main playground, the years of fighting to fix the street from Lindsay to Giuliani (with a wonderful portrayal of Koch, for an added thrill) as the street moved from the Crossroads of the (Porn and Drug) World to a branch of the Disney franchise. The book does deliver the sex, money, culture, and politics of its subtitle, in very healthy doses. There are no startling revelations only many, many small thrills, much like the street itself. An enjoyable read.

Caveat Emptor: Enjoyable But Flawed
By Steve Iaco
"Down 42nd Street" is a path I walk five days a week. It has been enjoyable to watch the stunning metamorphosis of this grand boulevard over the past decade or so. It was, therefore, with eager anticipation that I picked up this new history of 42nd Street.
On one level, it was an enjoyable read, offering illuminating anecdotes such as the encampment of George Washington's troops on the grounds of what is now the New York Public Library during the pivotal Battle of New York. In the 19th Century, the site would house the Croton Reservoir colossus. On the adjacent property, the Crystal Palace pavallion -- featuring the tallest structure in New York at the time -- became the City's premier social gathering place until it burned down while firefighters futilely tried to draw ground-level water from the high-walled reservoir. The demise of the Crystal Palace would clear the way for the development of Bryant Park on this site in the period after the Civil War.
The book is loaded with fascinating tidbits like these for people who enjoy history.
A good portion of the book is devoted to the spreading hegemony of illicit drugs, pornography and crime on West 42nd Street in the period after World War II, and the reclamation of the street in the 1990s. This is where "Down 42nd Street" falls down. The author -- an entertainment writer -- presents several misstatements that seriously tarnish his narrative. At one point, he asserts that Olympia & York owned Rockefeller Center -- hugh?? -- and contends that in 1981, "Governor" Cuomo dropped his opposition to the selection of a lead developer after Mayor Koch hinted at challenging the "Governor" in 1982. (Cuomo did not become Governor until 1983 following a primary challenge from Koch in the fall of 1982! Don't they employ factcheckers at Warner Books?)
The storyline really becomes muddled when describing the sequence of events in Times Square in 1990s, and it is clear that the author is out of his element here. He creates the appearance that the Conde Nast Building was the last of the four "elephant legs" in the 42nd Street Redevelopment Plan to be built. It was the first. He has Morgan Stanley purchasing its headquarters on Broadway and 49th Street AFTER the groundbreaking on the "elephant legs" when, in fact, the purchase pre-dated the Conde Nast groundbreaking by at least two years. He has Bertelsmann -- a true Times Square pioneer -- moving into its Broadway headquarters in 1999, about five years late. The list could go on.
These factual flaws diminish what started out as an enjoyable history. Caveat Emptor.

From cattle trail to pedestrian mall
By Charles S. Houser
My native skepticism makes me distrust about one third of what I read in this highly engaging page-turner. And I suspect a careful historian or a reader who cared enough to do a little investigative research could catch author Marc Eliot on a number of factual and interpretive errors. Even so, DOWN 42ND STREET was a fun read. One of Eliot's most delicious vices is his ability to draw (nearly libelous) caricatures of many of the key players in New York's history, most notably its mayors. (For instance, this about Ed Koch's repsonse to the porn, drug, and prostitution situation on 42nd Street: "No problem, Koch insisted. Just leave everything to him. From here on in, he told one and all, it was going to be nothing but smooth sailing. After which, the smiling, gesticulating mayor, the ever-loquacious captain of the good ship "New York," led himself and the city straight into the worst political storm of his career.") The overweening journalistic style exhibits itself in Eliot's tendency to frequently end chapters with semi-mysterious cliff-hangers designed to keep us reading. It works, but I read on with a much eroded sense of trust.
If you're willing to look past all that, and if you appreciate seeing large complex chunks of history telescoped into compact coctail-party-sized anecdotes, you'll enjoy this brief history of a truly fascinating piece of New York real estate. And one thing Eliot makes clear is that it IS all about real estate (i.e., money). Enormous and bizarre egos clash in scramble for profits. The history of 42nd Street is the history of corruption and neglect on the part of public officials; fear, fascination, and indifference on the part of citizens and tourists; and greed held in check by caution on the part of the private sector. In other words, there has been enough ambivalence about 42nd Street to keep Midtown in limbo (if not hell) for almost five decades. Eliot depicts this dilemma well. He also discusses what has been missing from most newspapers' accounts of the "resurrection" of 42nd Street: the fact that it was Organized Crime under the leadership of the Teflon Don, John Gotti, that almost single-handedly engineered the descent of one of the world's most amazing entertainment capitals into a truly dangerous place to be, day or night.
Eliot's final assessment reflects many New Yorkers' cynicism about the Disney-ification of Times Square. With the influx of Mall-of-America type stores and a Toys-R-Us Ferris Wheel, can Ed Koch's pedestrian mall be far behind? Maybe so. But one thing is sure, 42nd Street is one street that never stands still.

From Publishers Weekly
These entertaining and thoughtful syndicated columns by the former TV commentator were written between 1984 and 1987. Though Newman's range of interest is widefrom Third World starvation to smokeless tobacco and celebrity endorsements of productshis most effective pieces are those of modest scope: sales techniques of Hong Kong merchants, the rowdyism of British soccer fans, Sylvester Stallone, "who does his acting with his chest and arms." Known for his genteel understatement and wit, Newman approaches the diatribe level on only few subjects in this collection: rock and "background" music, and the influence of political polls. His "memory pieces" include an account of his 1975 interview with Emperor Hirohito and of runner Roger Bannister's four-minute-mile record in 1954. His sports enthusiasm later wanes, however, and in a separate piece he grumbles about the "tiresome and unattractive" qualities of "the tennis louts" and other top athletes today. In the final section, the author of Strictly Speaking and A Civil Tongue adds yet more succinct and often very funny complaints about the sloppiness with which Americans use their language.

From Library Journal
Newman's earlier books, Strictly Speaking (1974) and A Civil Tongue (1976), somewhat typed him as a campaigner for good English. Reflecting his wider range of interestsfrom the media, sports, and travel to world affairs, national character, and music, this collection of over 150 newspaper columns shows him to be a campaigner against all stupidity and wrongheadedness. Newman stands for good taste and reason amid rampant folly, and he tries to sort out how people can behave as they doblithely creating illegitmate children, for instance, or wearing bizarre hairdos. Most pieces appear as first written, with an occasional "afterword" to bring readers up to date on a topic. A trenchant, humorous, and thought-provoking work for public libraries.William A. Up Close and Personal with American Language
By Sunnye Tiedemann
This is a collection of Mr. Newman's columns, written between 1984 and 1987. In addition to his observations on subjects ranging from smokeless tobacco and celebrity endorsements to British soccer fans and Sylvester Stallone, Newman includes more of his funny-yet-serious complaints about the current sloppiness of the American/English language. Today, in 2002, the problem is even worse. Witness the influx of "like" as in "I was going to go, like, to her house, like, before I went to the, like, beach."
Let's hope in his next edition he'll include those gems bequeathed to us by TV jocks: "let's spend a moment of time with" and, heaven help us, the all-invasive "up close and personal," which no less than the Federal Government has adopted. To paraphrase the Good Book, the sins of TV announcers will be visited upon the third and fourth generations."

IF THIS IS TRUE, IT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!
By A Customer
Hopefully, Mr Newman will read this review. That is, filled with hope, Mr Newman will read and not be disappointed.
In this work Mr Newman comments on the lack of communication we see daily and the destruction of our language. He comments mostly by example, yet often offers the proper form.
I had a few problems with the first chapters but was totally entertained for the duration of the book.

Readers may never use an unsecured free Internet connection again after plowing through Rose's engaging new thriller. Four Minneapolis college students burn a condo complex, apparently for political reasons, killing a young woman and a security guard. Homicide detective Olivia Sutherland catches the case; when firefighter David Hunter discovers crucial evidence, he and Olivia must set aside their believably difficult romantic past to find the story behind the arson. Meanwhile, a stalker considers what to do with video of the students' incriminating conversations. Rose (I Can See You) packs action into every moment of four intense days as the meticulous, capable cops and firefighters race to stop a deadly blackmailer with his own distorted sense of morality. Thriller fans will love the high-adrenaline story and robust cast of intriguing supporting characters. (June)

Another winner for Karen Rose
By JJN-1313
This book started off just a smidge slow for me. You're bouncing around between a lot of characters with a lot going on. It kept me from digging into the story right away. But it wasn't a big thing and pretty quickly I was hooked into the story and just wanted to keep reading.

"Silent Scream" is nowhere near as creepy as some of Rose's other books (like the Vartanian sub-trilogy). It's not a particularly dark tale like those, but there's still a pretty decent body count! This story is more a complicated web of deception, revenge, greed and probably some good old-fashioned psychotic tendencies. There are a lot of plot threads, a lot of characters. So it's not a book you want to read casually. You gotta be paying attention.

I loved the way Rose had it all work out though. She weaved all the story threads together seamlessly. When you get to the end and everything has been revealed, it all fits together perfectly and logically. I love that. Such a complicated story, a story that would be easy for the author to get a little lost in and a reader to finish and be confused, but it's all tied up nicely. I finished and was just like, damn, how does she do this? (write such amazing suspense plots).

I admit that I like her psycho serial killer stories a little better, but you can't have a Simon Vartanian in every book. That would get old. Still, this one has a great plot. Once I got hooked into the story, I just wanted to keep reading because I really wanted to know how it all tied together. You know the whos for most of the book, but the whys take to the end to be completely revealed. And I was surprised on a few things. I also loved some of the subtle tie-ins to the previous book "I Can See You."

The book has its sad moments, too. I cried a little over the death of a character. It was so damn sad! I kind of expected the death...characters tend to die in the situation that one was in. But it still had me all teary eyed.

Now, as for the romance...I know a few KR fans who wish she'd up the romance element a bit (like in her first bunch of books). Will this book satisfy you? Maybe yes, maybe no. The suspense plot is still the most dominate aspect of the story. That's the main focus. But I do think the romance was stronger than in some other books. Olivia and David get to spend some significant time together. It takes a while to get to that point, but once they connect, you get some sweet scenes between them. I enjoyed the way Rose wrote their relationship. It fit (and the FREE epilogue available gives readers a nice fluffy bunny HEA extra). It also helps that both characters are very likable. David is a sweetheart and Olivia's a nice, strong woman.

The book also lets you visit with some other series characters: Noah Webster (I Can See You), his troubled former cop partner Jack has a small appearance, and there are mentions/small appearances for Eve, Mia, Ethan, Caroline, Max, Dana...maybe some others. Great to catch up with all those guys!

Just a very satisfying book to read. The plot was excellent, the romance good, the characters great. I honestly had no complaints at all...no loose ends, no mistakes, no unlikable characters, nothing. I was a happy camper when I finished. I will be anxiously awaiting Rose's next book. My guess is that it will be about Brie, Olivia's friend

Karen Rose, Master of Romantic Suspense
By suspensejunkie
Karen rose, the Master of Romantic Suspense, has done it again. In her latest (11th) novel, SILENT SCREAM, Rose delivers heart-pounding suspense and fiery romance as only a pro can.

Although this is a stand-alone novel and easy to love for new Rose fans, long-time fans of Rose will be thrilled to read about David and Olivia, and get some updates from other fantastic characters from earlier novels such as Phoebe Hunter and Noah Webster.

Set in Minneapolis, SILENT SCREAM has arson, murder, blackmailing, mystery, romance and a villain whose diabolical strategy for getting others to do his bidding has Olivia and David racing to stop him before he adds to his victims.

It is no exaggeration that Rose gets better with every new book, even though she has consistently given her fans fabulous characters, exciting mysteries and read with all the lights on suspense.

This is truly one for the keeper shelf, and a great gift for the suspense and romance readers on my gift-giving list this summer.
