About the Author
Ellis Peters is a pseudonym of Edith Mary Pargeter (1913 1995), a British author whose Chronicles of Brother Cadfael are credited with popularizing the historical mystery. Cadfael, a WelshBenedictinemonk living atShrewsbury Abbey in the first half of the twelfth century, has been described as combining the curious mind of a scientist with the bravery of a knight-errant. The character has been adapted for television, and the books drew international attention to Shrewsbury and its history.Pargeter won an Edgar Awardin 1963 for"Death and the Joyful Woman", and in 1993 she won theCartier Diamond Dagger, an annual award given by theCrime Writers Association of Great Britain. She was appointedofficer of the Order of the British Empirein 1994, and in 1999 the BritishCrime Writers Associationestablished theEllis Peters Historical Daggeraward, later called the Ellis Peters Historical Award.

Excellent read!

I thoroughly enjoy Patrick Tull and his style of narrating, using his voice to give unique personalities to all the characters featured in the story, especially Brother Cadfael. To me he IS Brother Cadfael! Elliot Peters does an excellent job of telling the tale with suspense, intrigue and a surprising resolution to the monks dilemma. I love these books because the author adds depth to the story by including a variety of a cast of characters, fleshed out and with their own tale to tell, all of which are woven together for an incredible and satisfying ending. I highly recommend this book, as well as all of the others by Elliott Peters in the Brother Cadfael series.

This is a typical Cadfael novel which uses a basic plot. In this case, the ambitious Prior Robert travels to Wales with an entourage that includes Cadfael to transfer a saint's remains back to the abbey which is complicated by the murder of a local nobleman. The better parts of all Cadfael stories is the use of the vocabulary and the descriptions of life in the mid 12th century. Nothing fancy here, but a simple and very readable book to wile away a rainy afternoon.

Very enjoyable

Wonderful. A very entertaining murder mystery that ocurred 1000 years ago. I am not usually a fan of this genre but I remember enjoying Cadfael on masterpiece theater many years ago. I was not disappointed in the book.
