Patricia Dennison's life is a chain of melodramatic events on the disastrous scale of the Titanic. Terrorists have executed her father on a passenger plane. She has inherited a multibillion-dollar empire that she doesn't want, & whose directors are plotting against her. The philanthropic doctor to whom she is engaged turns out to be gay. So she falls instead for a Portuguese bullfighter (who has just killed the husband of his last unfaithful lover). And so, with grandiose implausibility, the successive episodes crash one upon the next

The rough charm and heat that fueled Dance with the Devil are largely missing from Douglas's second novel, which reels through more melodramatic tragedies than the Book of Job. Softhearted, emotionally fragile Patricia Dennison, orphaned heiress to the Stoneham fortune, divides her life between trips to a Swiss sanitorium, where she is ensconced in the suicide ward, and the farm where she pensions off broken-down horses, cultivates a lush rose garden (with ladybugs, not pesticides) and moons after a handsome, seemingly heroic doctor. Enter arrogant Miguel Cardiga, a Portuguese bullfighter whose career is sidelined by a rogue bull's deadly horns. Son of a famed equestrian, Miguel schools Patricia in dressage and love's thrust and parry. Meantime, Stoneham Group trustees plot to declare Patricia incompetent and engineer a series of accidents designed to drive her over the edge. Although Douglas has proven himself a capable storyteller, he soaks this sticky-sweet romance in a rain of cliches and predictably cyclical lovers' spats. Flashes of wry humor can't salvage pasteboard characters and a creaky plot. Major ad/promo; author tour.

Such trite plot elements as a virile Latin bullfighter, a beautiful orphaned heiress, and Lusitano stallions pretty much explain this formulaic romance. Movie star-turned-novelist Douglas ( Dance with the Devil , Random, 1990) also throws in evil trustees, AIDS, Palestinian terrorists, glimpses of Lisbon and New York, amputees, and insanely jealous mistresses in this tale about a past murder that brings together the unlikely protagonists. Recommended for those readers not yet tired of the vicissitudes of the weird and wealthy. Literary Guild alternate; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/92.

From Kirkus Reviews
This kitschy sequel to 1990's Dance with the Devil--lacking the semiautobiographical psychic overtones of Douglas's first novel--is not from the same part of the soul as was mined by the immensely dedicated artist of Paths of Glory and Lust for Life. On page one, a bullfighter going into the ring has his privates felt up by his mistress: ```I want you,' she gasped, her mouth hungrily seeking his, while her hand reached down, trying to coax an erection.'' That's the opener, but the tasteful couplings throughout the rest of the novel raise little steam. The bullfighter is Portuguese horseman Miguel Cardiga, renowned for his dancing horse that can outwit a charging bull. But in the first chapter his mistress's jealous husband, who raises bulls, has slipped a dangerous, too experienced bull into the ring and Miguel loses a foot to the horns. This loss turns out to be a gift that eventually matures Miguel. His father, meanwhile, sells their ranch's two greatest horses to orphaned American billionairess Patricia Dennison, daughter of the late film director hero of Dance with the Devil. After taking bloody revenge on his mistress's husband, Miguel goes to Stone Ridge, New York, to teach Patricia how to ride her fabulous beasts in the Portuguese manner. Patricia, who has had mental problems, is about to lose her $10 billion empire to trustees intent on undermining her mental health even more deeply. Patricia and Miguel help each other face out their failings and fiscal problems. Then Miguel's insanely jealous ex- mistress has him arrested for her husband's murder. And so it flows.... A script that once would have left actor Douglas insulted, injured, crushed, writhing with agonized self-loathing, and cutting off his ear. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great read
By Trisha
This is a wonderful book. Kirk Douglas is a wonderful writer. I have the hard bound edition and is autographed by Mr. Douglas (when this book was first published in 1992). I would not recommend for anyone under the age of 20 because of the sex that described will make them blush.

Good Story
By James A. Anderson
Just finished a hardcover I picked up used at a book store quite some time ago and just getting around to it. THE GIFT by Kirk Douglas. Yes, that Kirk Douglas of Spartacus and The Vikings fame. He has apparently written two novels -- another one called DANCE WITH THE DEVIL deals with concentration camp survivors.
THE GIFT is a steamy tale of romance, passion and intrigue that sweeps the reader across two continents -- North America and Europe. It's the tale of an orphaned American heiress unsure about her future and her fortune and a rising star of the Portuguese bull ring whose career is cut short by tragic injury. He now trains horses in Lisbon and horse lovers would like this book because of all the horsey details. It is a bit too salacious for my tastes -- shades of Jacqueline Susann or Jackie Collins -- but an interesting storyline, if a bit outrageous.

As good as The Ragman’s Son
By Peggy Wiley
THE GIFT by Kirk Douglas
An heiress, an injured bullfighter, a remarkable horse, all make for a good story and the author puts it all together to bring off a good read. I had read his memoir, The Ragman’s Son, and enjoyed all of it. This novel shows his ability to give us a good story as well.
His characters are full and their individual stories make sense. He brings them all together and makes one care what happens to them. That is a feat of a good story-teller.
Thanks, Kirk!
