  • When a drug raid turns into a brutal and deadly ambush, Web London must try to unravel the mystery of why he is the only member of his close-knit team to survive.

Amazon.com Review
Last Man Standing has the essential elements of a terrific David Baldacci novel: a tough but tender-hearted hero, dirty dealings in the nation's bureaucracy, and a roller-coaster plot. Web London, a member of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, froze up on a drug raid and thus became the sole survivor of a remote-controlled ambush that killed six of his compatriots. Now the only witness has disappeared and the inside man on the botched raid has gone underground.

As a pretty psychiatrist puzzles over the corners of Web's brain that kept him alive, Web himself stays on the move. He's certain that the ambush is connected to the prison escape of a neofascist leader, Ernest B. Free, whom he helped arrest five years earlier, and a series of new murders leads him to a Virginia horse farm and the driving force behind all the carnage. It may seem as though Baldacci gives away the mastermind too soon, but both the bad guys and the good guys are complex enough that there's plenty of punch all the way to the last page. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
Last year's Wish You Well, a historical family drama set in rural Virginia, proved that Baldacci, previously known for his thrillers (particularly his debut, Absolute Power), can do much more than supply maximum suspense. His latest is another exciting thriller, but one that hasn't forsaken the ambitions of Wish You Well, plumbing the emotions and exploring the shadings of human nature in an impressive way. And for the first time, Baldacci has created characters that readers will demand to see back in a sequel. He has chosen an immensely interesting subject: the (real-life) FBI Hostage Rescue Team, a force so elite that many of the Seals, Delta Force grads and other special ops who apply to it don't make the cut. Baldacci's hero is hostage rescue team superstar Web London, who inexplicably (to himself and others) freezes during an operation that leaves the rest of his team dead; hence, the book's title. Web's investigation into the massacre involves him with several bands of criminals, most notably a white supremacist terrorist cell, a gang of D.C. drug peddlers headed by a charismatic giant, and a secret group involved in both terror and drug activities. At the same time, Web's exploration into why he froze leads him to psychoanalysis and hypnosis, to budding romance and, ultimately, to revelations that tie together all the strands and questions of the immensely complicated plot. This is Baldacci's most accomplished thriller. The action, conspiratorial and overt, shifting from urban to rural and back, is nearly nonstop and expertly drawn; heroes and villains alike are believable and equally flawed; and there's a newfound maturity of tone here, a somber acceptance of the suffering that necessarily attends human life. (On-sale Nov. 6)Forecast: The American flag waving on the book's cover will draw readers' eyes; the strong title and the Baldacci name will carry them to the cash register. Expect hefty sales. Simultaneous audio cassette (abridged and unabridged), audio CD (abridged) and large-print editions.

I recommend this book
By Michael Zinn
This is the last of 5 stand alone books that I read in a row. I had a little difficulty in keeping a few characters separate for some time. However, the plot became clear and the reading easier. I recommend this book.

Fast paced, fascinating, but a little far-fetched
By Alexis Hawthorne
You have to love Baldacci if you love suspense. As per his usual style he has created a completely gripping novel with more twists and turns than a mountain road. The characters are larger than life, but don't we all need a little escapism? And don't we all really need to belive in heros? The main character, Web London, is a tortured hero, but a hero through and through. He finds himself fighting on many fronts, even one in his own mind. And while he never knows who to trust, you know you can trust him. Even some of the not-so-good characters turn out to have a heroic streak. And there are a lot of characters to keep track of.
The plot was intricate. I have to admit I wasn't sure where it was going until very near the end. The wrap up was a little coincidental for my taste and there were times where the prose was a bit forced. Bodies litter the sidelines of this story, so it is not for the faint of heart. The motion starts on page one and never stops. The ending wraps it all up nicely and lays way for more of Web London...?
On the whole I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and lost sleep to read it.

Can he get any better?
By Larry Knudson
Another really fine book by Mr. Baldacci. He can make even the seemingly dull subjects very interesting. Read any two of his books and you'll be hooked just like I am now. Pick them at random, but I'd suggest "The Winner" as a great start

The Gift, by Kirk Douglas

Patricia Dennison's life is a chain of melodramatic events on the disastrous scale of the Titanic. Terrorists have executed her father on a passenger plane. She has inherited a multibillion-dollar empire that she doesn't want, & whose directors are plotting against her. The philanthropic doctor to whom she is engaged turns out to be gay. So she falls instead for a Portuguese bullfighter (who has just killed the husband of his last unfaithful lover). And so, with grandiose implausibility, the successive episodes crash one upon the next

From Publishers Weekly
The rough charm and heat that fueled Dance with the Devil are largely missing from Douglas's second novel, which reels through more melodramatic tragedies than the Book of Job. Softhearted, emotionally fragile Patricia Dennison, orphaned heiress to the Stoneham fortune, divides her life between trips to a Swiss sanitorium, where she is ensconced in the suicide ward, and the farm where she pensions off broken-down horses, cultivates a lush rose garden (with ladybugs, not pesticides) and moons after a handsome, seemingly heroic doctor. Enter arrogant Miguel Cardiga, a Portuguese bullfighter whose career is sidelined by a rogue bull's deadly horns. Son of a famed equestrian, Miguel schools Patricia in dressage and love's thrust and parry. Meantime, Stoneham Group trustees plot to declare Patricia incompetent and engineer a series of accidents designed to drive her over the edge. Although Douglas has proven himself a capable storyteller, he soaks this sticky-sweet romance in a rain of cliches and predictably cyclical lovers' spats. Flashes of wry humor can't salvage pasteboard characters and a creaky plot. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
Such trite plot elements as a virile Latin bullfighter, a beautiful orphaned heiress, and Lusitano stallions pretty much explain this formulaic romance. Movie star-turned-novelist Douglas ( Dance with the Devil , Random, 1990) also throws in evil trustees, AIDS, Palestinian terrorists, glimpses of Lisbon and New York, amputees, and insanely jealous mistresses in this tale about a past murder that brings together the unlikely protagonists. Recommended for those readers not yet tired of the vicissitudes of the weird and wealthy. Literary Guild alternate; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/1/92.

From Kirkus Reviews
This kitschy sequel to 1990's Dance with the Devil--lacking the semiautobiographical psychic overtones of Douglas's first novel--is not from the same part of the soul as was mined by the immensely dedicated artist of Paths of Glory and Lust for Life. On page one, a bullfighter going into the ring has his privates felt up by his mistress: ```I want you,' she gasped, her mouth hungrily seeking his, while her hand reached down, trying to coax an erection.'' That's the opener, but the tasteful couplings throughout the rest of the novel raise little steam. The bullfighter is Portuguese horseman Miguel Cardiga, renowned for his dancing horse that can outwit a charging bull. But in the first chapter his mistress's jealous husband, who raises bulls, has slipped a dangerous, too experienced bull into the ring and Miguel loses a foot to the horns. This loss turns out to be a gift that eventually matures Miguel. His father, meanwhile, sells their ranch's two greatest horses to orphaned American billionairess Patricia Dennison, daughter of the late film director hero of Dance with the Devil. After taking bloody revenge on his mistress's husband, Miguel goes to Stone Ridge, New York, to teach Patricia how to ride her fabulous beasts in the Portuguese manner. Patricia, who has had mental problems, is about to lose her $10 billion empire to trustees intent on undermining her mental health even more deeply. Patricia and Miguel help each other face out their failings and fiscal problems. Then Miguel's insanely jealous ex- mistress has him arrested for her husband's murder. And so it flows.... A script that once would have left actor Douglas insulted, injured, crushed, writhing with agonized self-loathing, and cutting off his ear. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great read
By Trisha
This is a wonderful book. Kirk Douglas is a wonderful writer. I have the hard bound edition and is autographed by Mr. Douglas (when this book was first published in 1992). I would not recommend for anyone under the age of 20 because of the sex that described will make them blush.

Good Story
By James A. Anderson
Just finished a hardcover I picked up used at a book store quite some time ago and just getting around to it. THE GIFT by Kirk Douglas. Yes, that Kirk Douglas of Spartacus and The Vikings fame. He has apparently written two novels -- another one called DANCE WITH THE DEVIL deals with concentration camp survivors.

THE GIFT is a steamy tale of romance, passion and intrigue that sweeps the reader across two continents -- North America and Europe. It's the tale of an orphaned American heiress unsure about her future and her fortune and a rising star of the Portuguese bull ring whose career is cut short by tragic injury. He now trains horses in Lisbon and horse lovers would like this book because of all the horsey details. It is a bit too salacious for my tastes -- shades of Jacqueline Susann or Jackie Collins -- but an interesting storyline, if a bit outrageous.

As good as The Ragman’s Son
By Peggy Wiley
THE GIFT by Kirk Douglas

An heiress, an injured bullfighter, a remarkable horse, all make for a good story and the author puts it all together to bring off a good read. I had read his memoir, The Ragman’s Son, and enjoyed all of it. This novel shows his ability to give us a good story as well.

His characters are full and their individual stories make sense. He brings them all together and makes one care what happens to them. That is a feat of a good story-teller.

Thanks, Kirk!

One of the most exciting books ever!!
By giles@internet-zahav.net
William Goldman's Heat is one of the best books I've read. I can't exactly say that it takes you from the first page, but wait for ten pages or so, and you won't be able to leave it (I tried). The twists and slides of the book are Marathon Man style and even though I say that, you'll never guess what's going to happen next. I don't want to spill any of the contents of the book, for fear of spoiling it, and a word of advice, don't even read the back to know what the stories about. Certainly a rarety where it'll leave you both exhilirated and shining.

Fun, dark, and unique (NO SPOILERS)
By Maxwell Higgins
This is not your typical novel (nothing by William Goldman is very typical). It is Goldman's take on the life of an aging, semi-retired trained killer, living out the rest of his life in Las Vegas. When a lady friend of his finds herself in a compromising situation, the anti-hero/protagonist Nick "the Mex" Escalante, decides to help her out. What ensues is a series of action-filled confrontations in which Nick uses his training to basically kill everything, with anything. Written in a dispassionate and disturbed fashion that only Goldman can pull off, Heat depicts the seedy, gritty, guttural underbelly of Vegas that hides in the shadows of the neon lights, told from the perspective of a tired, haggard, consummate professional that is paradoxically detached from valuing human life and yet interested in saving the life of his friend.

It's a fun read, short and sweet.

Heat is old-time fun.
By Dennis Ray
Goldman knows how to write a fun book to read and his only fault is that he doesn't write more novels (or hasn't since '86's "Brothers" the sequel to "The Marathon Man").

Heat is far from being a perfect book, but comes very close to being very good. I enjoyed it the first time I read it almost 20 years ago and although I've changed and the world changed Heat hasn't suffered much or has become outdated as so many "better" books like "Rising Sun" have. It takes place firmly in the 1980's but doesn't like a book written during that period rather more of a book that takes place in that year not from that year. Basically, it's not tied down with past ideologies and mores from those years that most of us have outgrown or simply forgotten. It's a great book that keeps you reading and this is something rare in most books. It's a stripped down novel that with another writer telling this story probably would have been three times longer. It takes a great story teller to strip a story down to just it's bone without loosing the book's presence and scope.
Probably because of Goldman's screenplay experience he's able make every word, thought and description count and probably is why his books haven't done well as movies because you can't strip his stories down any further. The only way to properly do a Goldman book is to rewrite it for the screen.
Heat is worth discovering if you haven't had the chance. It's fun and worth a mention or two even after all these years.

powerful book on forgiveness concerning others & ourselves
By Lori L. Romike
It is powerful to forgive & allow love to replace fear & anger in our hearts. I really liked the quote "Everyday is a new day in God's mercies, don't waste today by living in yesterdays sins" it is a postive gift to all believers, when we feel forsaken, lost & unloved. As simple as truly forgiving any or all persons or actions that harm or destroy us in life's path, can restore us with peace by 1 mighty powerful word "forgiveness" which in my mind as the authors, forgiveness is linked closely to love.

Impeccable in every way
By RonnieJ
I am in love with this book! I love daily readings and this has a nice daily read. Each page is filled with a starting scripture to understand the purpose of Joel's passage thereafter. The book is gorgeous. Book lovers like myself with understand that. The book is made with really great quality paper and has a nice ribbon to keep track of your days. It has a note section, but it is so pretty I do not want to write in it lol. This book is above average for just being a little daily reader. I cannot get enough of Joel's messages and I am thankful this little book. I look forward to getting more and sharing these with my friends and loved ones.

I love Your Best Life by Joel Osteen. The only thing I would suggest is have more information available about the size of the book and size of print. Because of my vision issues the print is too small, which makes it difficult to read.

Thanks!

Do Yourself a Favor...Forgive: Learn How to Take Control of Your Life Through Forgiveness, by Joyce Meyer

Building on her signature message of using the mind to master difficult emotions, Joyce Meyer focuses on the most destructive, insidious one of all: anger. It is responsible for broken relationships, sleepless nights, high blood pressure and ulcers. It destroys friendships, marriages and families, not to mention peace of mind. Anger is especially hard to handle for many Christians who have learned from childhood that "good Christians don't get angry." Meyer argues that properly handled, anger is an alert system that something is wrong and needs to be resolved.

In her latest book, she delves into the important process of forgiving, explaining its positive impact on the roots, the forms and the results of anger.

Why forgive? Joyce explains that forgiving is the only thing that can free one from the terrible turmoil that anger causes to spill over into every part of life.

Meyer understands that life will never be fair, but that is not a reason to let anger destroy our well-being and health. This is her guide to navigating that thorny territory and finding true peace.

One of the best books I've ever read
By Sugarplum
A very powerful book that helped me get out of depression due to abusive relationship!

I had been abused in many ways by my husband and though I tried very hard, it was very difficult for me to be free from all the painful memories. I would often wonder, 'Why would God just let him be when he is so destructive and evil?'
At one point, I did have to run away from him with our child for the sake of sanity as well as safety. Life became frustrating because I am in no man's land - not divorced, not separated, yet I'm practically a single mother in every sense.
I read Karen's post and totally understand what she's saying about the danger of reconnecting with dangerous exes. I believe that God will never force us to meet and reconnect with husbands or exes unless hearts are ready and God's timing is ripe. I believe what Joyce is saying here is to prepare our hearts the way God wants us to so that He can work in our relationships and bring healing.
It takes a lot of effort on my part to finally accept and say that despite what happened, God is good and His goodness and faithfulness will prevail in this mess of my life.

After reading this book, I was able to set aside all the excuses. Finally, I decided and declared that I forgive and bless my husband and let the past pass. It does not mean I am running back to him right now because he, unchanged and unrepentant, will definitely harm me.
It just means I am not gonna spend nights crying, hurting, and hating my husband. I am so tired of it and I want to be free. I have no idea how long I have to live like this, but I will put my hope and trust in God - something I could not do prior to reading this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take off huge burdens of offenses, anger, turmoils, and painful memories resulted by strained relationships: While they never just disappear,it feels so much better and lighter to set them aside and let God take care of these heavy loads.
Joyce is right, we must forgive because God commands us to forgive as the ones who are forgiven. But in the process, we will realize that we are actually doing ourselves a huge favor by forgiving... Freedom from depression, self-pity, and pain!

A true believer of Christ/A fan of Joyce Meyer
By queenT
I rated this book what I did because it deserves the rating plus more. This book helped me to be able to forgive a whole lot of people in my life. And I can relate to Joyce Meyer a whole lot. Our stories are different but yet at the same time they still feel the same. I have read a lot of Joyce books and although I love the other books too, I would have to say this one is my favorite because I could put this book in action while I was reading it. There were never a dull moment reading this book. I can truly say I love Joyce Meyer books & her for helping me to feel free to tell my story without feeling ashamed and no longer do I feel like a victim. I truly wish one day before I leave this earth me and Joyce Meyer meet. She is truly a blessed woman and I can honestly say I have found someone I can look up too. I would recommend everybody to read her books. Even the titles to her books will touch a part of your life you would relate to her. Keep doing what you are doing Joyce I'm proud of you. And I am truly your sister in Christ.

From Publishers Weekly
One of the warmest and quirkiest mystery series around boasts a new publisher and a welcome burst of fresh energy. Making his 10th appearance (following Death of a Travelling Man ) is lanky, tousle-haired Scottish Highland copper Hamish Macbeth, in the company here of his lazy dog Towser, his higher-born fiancee Priscilla and the quixotic inhabitants of the village of Lochdubh. Hamish, known for his slovenly lifestyle and crafty detecting, meets handsome newcomer, Peter Hynd, whose suave looks send the village womenfolk running to the hairdresser and aerobics classes. Soon they are at each other's throats and queueing up for a place in his bed. The Lothario goes missing and soon the body of one of his conquests is found on the beach, leaving Hamish with two mysteries to solve while his domestic life deteriorates. Beaton's tremendously likable policeman stars here in a tightly wrought tale, with a gem of an ending in which Hamish manages to be both dead right and dead wrong. Further good news is that the series has been optioned by Zenith Productions, the team responsible for the absorbing TV series starring Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse.

From Booklist
Hamish MacBeth is a stubborn, silent, gloomy Scotsman who's also kindhearted, intelligent, and intuitive. A Lochdubh native, he knows his village, the surrounding countryside, and the local folk like the back of his hand. His life is satisfyingly settled--he's engaged to the lovely Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, and there have been no serious crimes in Lochdubh for months. Then incredibly handsome Peter Hynd comes to town, charms all the women, antagonizes all the men, and generally turns the town on its ear. Hamish senses trouble brewing, but when a body is discovered, it's not Hynd after all--at least, the first body isn't. Other coppers might be baffled by the case, but not laconic, methodical, determined Hamish, who persists until he unravels the puzzling mystery. Beaton's low-key police procedural doesn't offer white-knuckle suspense, blood and gore, fast-paced action, or stunning climaxes. What it does offer is an intimate look at life in a small Scottish village, striking insights into human nature, carefully detailed, highly accurate descriptions of police work, splendid dry humor, and a story that's as satisfying as a cozy cup of tea. Emily Melton

From Kirkus Reviews
Or is he really dead? The official word on irresistible philanderer Peter Hynd is that he slipped out of his house in the sleepy Scottish village of Drim in the middle of the night, leaving behind a bevy of broken-hearted matrons. But Lochdubh Sgt. Hamish Macbeth (Death of a Travelling Man, 1993, etc.), whose beat includes Drim, is convinced that Peter is dead, even though the broken body that's found at the foot of a cliff is that of besotted housewife Betty Baxter. Suspicious of the phone call that lured Betty out to the cliff for a last rendezvous with Peter, Hamish, in an uncharacteristic fit of industry, affronts both his official superiors and his unofficial fianc‚e, Priscilla Halburton-Smythe (already angry that Hamish has responded to her own brief flirtation with Peter by taking up with Sophy Bisset, the new receptionist at her father's hotel), by spending his vacation alone at Drim, where he noses out clues among such suspects as Betty's husband, who attacked his late wife with a codfish, and their unnervingly maternal daughter. A remarkable spate of activity for the usually indolent Hamish--he also thwarts a burglary, faces down a wife-beater, and gets charged with police brutality--makes this his most spirited outing in years. It just shows how much even the laziest man will exert himself to keep from getting married and promoted. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Village in turmoil
By Jeanne Tassotto
Hamish Macbeth, the young, not overly ambitious constable of the remote village of Lochdubh in the far north of Scotland has decided that it is about time he checked the far reaches of his beat, the even more remote village of Drim. He discovered that the normally peaceful little village was in a turmoil due to the arrival of an 'incomer', a handsome, charming, young man. All the women of the village thought him a welcome addition and all their husbands wanted to send him on his way. When did just aburptly pack up and leave in the middle of the night Drim returned to normal sleepy ways but Hamish stirred into action. He did not believe that the interloper had actually left, at least not on his own.

This is the tenth installment of the long running 'Hamish Macbeth' series. While each is a stand alone story it would be more enjoyable to read them more or less in order. As with most cozy mysteries the attraction is in the characters and the backstories more than the mystery, although this one has a few twists that might keep the reader guessing. Hamish's on again off again romance with Priscilla is of more interest to fans of this series than 'who dun it'.

DEATH OF A CHARMING MAN is a pleasant way to spend a few hours. Those familiar with the series will enjoy dropping in on the good constable and catching up on village life. Those new to the series will probably be looking for other books to find out more about this delightful place.

A Good Talk: The Story and Skill of Conversation, by Daniel Menaker

A GOOD TALK is an analysis of and guide to that most exclusively human of all activities-- conversation.

Drawing on over forty years of experience in American letters, Menaker pinpoints the factors that drive and enliven every good conversation: the vagaries (and joys) of subtext; the deeper structure and meaning of conversational flow; the subliminal signals that guide our disclosures and confessions; and the countless other hurdles we must clear along the way. Moving beyond self-help musings and "how to" advice, he has created a stylish, funny, and surprising book: a celebration of "the most excusively human of all activities."

In a time when conversation remains deeply important-- for building relationships, for relaxing, even for figuring out who we are-- and also increasingly imperiled (with Blackberries and texting increasingly in vogue), A GOOD TALK is a refreshing celebration of the subtle adventures of a good conversation.

From Publishers Weekly
A fiction writer and former editor at the New Yorker and Random House, Menaker (The Treatment) regards conversation as a human art of great importance produced by all people everywhere. His witty approach is evident almost immediately, as he speculates on the creation of human language, moving on to the general rules of conversation, London coffeehouses as a forum for ideas, greetings, and name-droppers: They wrap the pig of name-dropping in a blanket of casualness, or even criticalness, and seem to actually believe you won't taste the inner wiener. At the book's core is a conversation between Menaker and an anonymous female writer. Taped in a Brooklyn restaurant, this lengthy transcript is analyzed in detail to show how the participants take risks, seek a common ground, interject humor, and discover perceptive insights about each other. Interview tactics and prepared remarks are covered, along with e-mail embarrassments, dating stratagems, sarcastic barbs, compliments, and interruptions. However, what makes a lasting impression is the parade of anecdotes about life in the corridors of the New Yorker and Random House, leaving the reader yearning for a full-scale Menaker memoir. (Jan.)

From Booklist
A New Yorker editor for 26 years, Menaker views conversation as artifact, tracing its prehistoric beginnings with glottological theories on physical changes in the hominid larynx and mutation of the FoxP2 gene, which helped develop brain areas conducive to language, all before hominids left Africa. He posits that conversation developed as a hands-free substitute for socially interactive grooming, as with chimps, and, moving forward, considers conversation as aimless: not without aim, but without purpose, something that Americans, more than other modern societies, have been traditionally critical of. Within the context of the persistent legacy of Puritan “sobriety and pioneer pragmatism” favoring “those who talk little and accomplish much,” he seamlessly entwines his own wryly humorous observations, dialogue from Jonathon Swift and Fred and Ginger, discussion of the chi energy of conversation, and FAQ: Frequently Arising Quandries. These last include “Insults” (subdivided into Inadvertent Affronts and Deliberate, Frontal Attack), “Prepared Remarks,” and “Dating,” which includes observations by Samuel Johnson plus notes on seduction and courtship. A charming, useful, and entertaining approach to a fascinating topic. --Whitney Scott

Review
"I might have guessed that Daniel Menaker could talk about talk with the same facility and charm that he can bring to any conversation. Still, A GOOD TALK, his lively analysis of the workings of social speech, comes as a delightful revelation."―--Billy Collins, former Poet Laureate of the United States and author of Ballistics

"The art of conversation is in decline, and Daniel Menaker has hastened that decline by writing prose that is so funny, surprising, and habit-forming that the reader is inclined to cancel all social engagements and stay in at night with this book. I don't know about you, but I find it hard to resist an author who compares Socrates to
Columbo."―Mary Roach, author of Stiff

"How can a single book be so learned, so wise, so helpful, and so short? A Good Talk is a great delight."―Ann Packer, author of The Dive from Clausen's Pier

"Just when it seems our society has forgotten how vital it is to our health and well being to have both intimate and public productive conversation, Daniel Menaker brings us "A Good Talk." This intelligent and thoughtful exploration of human communication happens to be very entertaining, but more importantly it provides a roadmap for enhancing your own relationships with good talk." ―Gail Saltz, M.D. Psychiatrist, Psychoanalyst, and Today Show Contributor

A Good Read for Wordsmiths
By Drea Knufken
A stranger in an airplane sparked a conversation with me the other day. Rather than the usual awkward seatmate dialogue, we ended up having a good conversation.

He told me about his time in Iraq and playing craps in Vegas. I told him about my visit to Laos, where he would be stationed next. Although our half-hour exchange may have felt like little more than a way to pass time, we were actually discovering connections, establishing common ground, and taking on roles.

I didn't realize this until about a week later, when I read "A Good Talk: The Story and Skill of Conversation, former New Yorker editor Daniel Menaker's latest book." In his seven-chapter discourse on conversation, Menaker explains the evolution, mechanics, and benefits of human conversation. His entertaining new read offers a fresh perspective on how and why conversations play significant roles in our lives.

Inside the Book

Menaker has a tendency to elaborate and digress. He shows this habit right from the beginning, with 22 pages of opening remarks.

In his wordy, amusing style, he speculates on the origin and evolution of conversation. He makes points about the essence of conversation by referring to various social science studies. You leave those opening remarks with a clearer sense of why conversation is hard to study, what makes it unique, and where it probably came from. You also feel like Menaker has talked to you, a theme that continues throughout the book.

Next, Menaker explores the history of conversation, from Socrates to talk shows. He goes on to break down the components of a conversation, using a long transcribed conversation between himself and an acquaintance as a case study.

Through Menaker's long, bantering example, you learn about the structure of conversation. For example, most conversations come in five parts: Survey, Discovery, Risks, Roles, and the ending of the talk. Menaker describes each. You also learn different approaches to take while engaging in one. This is one of the more instructive parts of the book, but it's embedded in a whole bunch of, well, talk.

In the fifth chapter of the book, Menaker answers some frequently asked questions on conversation. How do address boredom? What about people who suddenly insult you? What about email manners? There are some useful tips here. Chapter 6 describes the three qualities any good conversationalists must possess: Curiosity, humor, and impudence. You learn not only what they are, but how to use them.

The final chapter of the book describes how conversation benefits people emotionally and physically (oxytocin has a role here). Menaker also reflects on conversation's political and social roles, concluding with insights on how conversations can change our lives.

My Thoughts

Because I'm reviewing this book from a business angle, let me issue a qualifier. It's not for everyone. As a New Yorker fan, writer, and admirer of the craft of writing, I probably land on the bull's eye of this book's target audience. When I read Menaker's digressions, I was also taking note of his often boundary-pushing writing style. I enjoyed his use of big words. As for his references to New York's literary elite, I thought: I should learn who these people are.

If I'd been looking for cut-and-dried advice on how to be good at conversation, and I didn't happen to be a literary wonk, this book would have annoyed me. But if you can relate to me, do bring A Good Talk on your vacation or on the plane. The writing flows, engages, and inspires. It made me more interested in any conversation, and made me want to have more good ones.

In a sense, the book is written like a conversation: You have to sift through the chatter to see the glint of gems. This was especially apparent in Chapters 3 and 4, which covered a painfully long conversation as a case study. I would have preferred that Menaker chunked out the conversation into short bits, then defined his points after each excerpt.

Still, if you aren't turned off by written rambling, Menaker does offer a truly fresh perspective on conversations. His book helped me appreciate conversations as a form, not just a necessity.

I'll conclude by saying that if you want straightforward tips, this isn't your tome. But if you like good writing, fresh perspectives, and the New Yorker for that matter, pick this book up.

Conversations Can Build A Better Tomorrow
By C. Lewis
The book itself it witty and engaging. I found myself not wanting to put the book down as I was drawn into the history and discourse of talking. It may sound dull, but believe me it isn't. Each chapter has conversations that are great examples of the topic that he is trying to cover which truly allows the reader to understand the concepts at a much deeper level.

As I work in a profession that requires a lot of talking, this book was rather relevant. I run into people daily who have a lack of skill when it comes to conversing with others. I even find at times that conversation does not always come naturally, thus this book was a great find and a great read, as it makes you look at conversing with others in a different light and allows you to work step by step to build yourself into a better conversationalist as well as becomming a better person in society.

Terrible
By A. Sander
I sought practical advice like many of the other reviewers and I found some. But the book is filled with self referential writing, making for a boring read. At one point the author mentioned that he tried to find people to record for conversation but failing to find many willing volunteers records his own conversation with a friend (for two chapters of a seven chapter book). Instead of finding a sparkling example of fine conversation, we end up with whatever he could think of at the time. And that is how the book feels, like the author put his thoughts to the page without much research or consideration for the reader.

Michael Connelly and Janet Evanovich: Author One-to-One
In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors Michael Connelly and Janet Evanovich and asked them to interview each other. Find out what two of the top authors of their genres have to say about their characters, writing process, and more. Janet Evanovich is the bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum novels, including Finger Lickin' Fifteen, twelve romance novels, the Alexandra Barnaby novels, and How I Write: Secrets of a Bestselling Author. Read on to see Janet Evanovich's questions for Michael Connelly, or turn the tables to see what Connelly asked Evanovich.

Evanovich: So dude,... Okay, you're back in Florida. Do you ever get to the beach? And when and if you get to the beach...is Harry Bosch with you? And what kind of beachwear are you guys sporting? Flip-flops? Crocs? Speedo? Board shorts?

Connelly: I go to the beach often on weekends. Board shorts are required and I wear flip-flops with the built in bottle opener. Comes in handy. In Florida we rarely have waves, unless there is a hurricane in the Gulf. So I have taken up paddle-boarding, which essentially involves a big surfboard that you stand on and paddle. Still a balancing act, but easier than surfing, and you don't need waves.

Evanovich: What will a bookstore look like in 2020? Will we all be downloading?

Connelly: Good question. Since it is only eleven years from now, I think there will still be a solid population of "old school" readers who need the book in their hands. The question is, will they get it at a bookstore or will we have a Kindle 9.0 device that manufactures a book for you at home, complete with photo of author in a bomber jacket.

Evanovich: If everybody is downloading in 2020 what the heck will we be signing on book tour? Body parts? Kindle cases?

Connelly: I signed two Kindles yesterday. One person asked me to leave room for signatures from you and Dennis Lehane. So next time you're in Seattle she'll be in your line.

Evanovich: Do you eat when you write? Beer nuts? M&Ms? Just coffee? What keeps you from falling out of the chair in a narcoleptic stupor?

Connelly: Have you ever seen what eating Cheetos can do to a keyboard? I have to say I am addicted to Coke. I always have a glass of it nearby. I eat a lot of candy, too. Keeps me going. Smarties are a great writing tool. I often need to raid my daughter's stash and then there is trouble on the home front.

Evanovich: Are you a messy guy or a neat guy? Do you keep clutter on your desk? In your head? Are there soda cans and crumpled fast food wrappers rolling around on the floor of your car?

Connelly: I keep a clean car but a desk that gets progressively messier as I write a book. When I am finished with the book, I clean up the desk—and eat all the stray Smarties found under the paperwork. The clean desk then promotes the start of the next book.

Evanovich: The new book, The Scarecrow sounds terrific, and I know it's followed by Harry Bosch in Nine Dragons in the fall. Does your publisher prefer one series over another? And do you find one series to be more commercially viable than another?

Connelly: They let me do what I want. I like writing about Harry Bosch and he's pretty popular, but usually when I write a standalone it widens the audience a bit.

Evanovich: Want to meet me in a bar in Ft. Myers? Is that halfway?

Connelly: Name the place.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Bestseller Connelly comments on the plight of print journalism in a nail-biting thriller featuring reporter Jack McEvoy, last seen in 2004's The Narrows. When Jack is laid off from the L.A. Times with 14 days' notice to tie up loose ends, he decides to go out with a bang. What starts as a story about the wrongful arrest of a young gangbanger for the brutal rape and murder of an exotic dancer turns out to be just the tip of an iceberg that takes McEvoy from the Nevada desert to a futuristic data-hosting facility in Arizona. FBI agent Rachel Walling, with whom he worked on a serial killer case in 1996's The Poet, soon joins the hunt, but as the pair uncover more about the killer and his unsettling predilections, they realize that they too are being hunted. With every switch between McEvoy's voice and the villain's, Connelly ratchets up the tension. This magnificent effort is a reminder of why Connelly is one of today's top crime authors. 8-city author tour. (May)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Connelly introduces characters from one series into other novels or series, and veteran readers will find enduring, familiar faces in The Scarecrow. A compelling and suspenseful thriller, it is also a sharp if unobtrusive commentary on the death of our nation’s newspapers, as well as a “frighteningly plausible” examination of the sinister nature of computer technology (New York Times). “Reading it will make it impossible for you to ever again think that when you do something online, no one’s watching,” noted the St. Petersburg Times. The dual perspective (McEvoy’s and the killer’s) adds depth to the narrative, if some clichéd characters and missing details marred critics’ reviews. Because The Scarecrow ends with the beginning of Connelly’s next book, readers anxious about the ending don’t have long to wait.

Great start - but a bit of a let down near the end.
By J. Norburn
Michael Connelly is easily one of the best crime fiction authors working today and The Scarecrow is a solid read, although I have to admit that after a great start the ending is a bit of let down. It isn't that the ending is bad (it isn't) - it's just that it follows a standard formula and was just too 'ordinary'.

The first half of The Scarecrow is exceptionally good. Connelly gives readers an insider's look at the inner workings of the newspaper business and the devastating effect that the internet and 24 hour cable news is having on it. I appreciated that our hero, reporter Jack McEvoy, starts chasing a story for reasons that are not entirely noble. When the grandmother of a gang member charged with murder insists her grandson is innocent, Jack follows up, not intending to prove the boy innocent, but rather to gain access to the family so he can profile the mind of a young killer. Of course, he does find evidence that leads the story in a different direction.

The greatest strength of Connelly's fiction is how thorough he is as a writer. For example: the killer is planning to frame someone (I don't want to give too much away) and Connelly has him address any holes in his plan, like the transportation of a firearm. Lesser authors would simply ignore the problem(s) and assume that readers wouldn't notice or would be willing to overlook the inconsistancies. Connelly though has his killer find a solution so that his plan is as realistic as possible. I appeciate that. I also appreciate that McEvoy and his partner FBI agent Rachel Walling don't just stumble around - they actually investigate, detect, and solve things. The criminals are intelligent too, which makes for a refreshingly smart read.

Unfortunately, after an exceptional start, it's as if Connelly switches onto autopilot for the second half of the novel and follows the Serial Killer Novel Playbook to the letter. Connelly uses one of the standard ploys of crime fiction: notably the `hero realizes the truth when he sees, hears, or says something unrelated to the crime that triggers a sudden epiphany, allowing him to save the day at the last possible moment." The other issue that I had with the final part of the novel is the behavior of the killer when he realizes that Jack and Rachel are onto him. He's been so cool and calculating throughout the novel but then over-reacts faced with Jack's flimsy `evidence'.

Is The Scarecrow worth reading? Absolutely. True, the ending was a bit of a let down after such a great start, but at least there was a great start and it wasn't that big of a let down. 3 ¾ stars.

You're Not In The Emerald City Any Longer SCARECROW!!!!
By TheReader23
I added this up last night and discovered that I have read more books by Michael Connelly (15) than any other author I've read. So I guess one could say I'm a huge fan. The amazing thing is that they were all five star books (except for Chasing The Dime, of course). I find this almost hard to believe but it's true. And I'm actually one of the readers who started reading Connelly before his real fame came into being with the publication of The Poet.

I guess it's only fair then that his latest offering features journalist Jack McEvoy....the same Jack McEvoy who appeared in The Poet. Connelly's true fans have been awaiting a reappearance by one of their favorite characters for years now and in The Scarecrow, Jack's return does not disappoint for one minute. I loved this book from the beginning to the end.

Having started his career as a journalist, I'm sure this book is close to Connelly's heart as he watches the slow demise of the newspaper industry. The fact that technology is killing newspapers becomes only too clear as the book starts off with Jack getting a pink slip from the LA Times. But "our" Jack is intent on going out with a bang and makes it his business to come up with one last story that will be Pulitzer prizeworthy. He will set out to prove that a sixteen year old gang member is not guilty of the murder for which he is being accused. The good news to Jack's fans is that he will need to ask FBI agent Rachel Walling for her help as he starts to get too close to the answer to the mystery and much too close to The Scarecrow. Their "coupling" in this book is well worth the wait as they make such a great team.

We learn at the beginning of the book who the real villain is and I enjoy when an author does this because I then get to follow the thoughts of the "bad guy" right up front. As Jack is closing in on The Scarecrow, we get to view this villain as he becomes a bird being scared by a scarecrow as opposed to the opposite way around. I enjoyed all of the Wizard of Oz references in the book as well. At one point, music is playing in the background and it's Eric Clapton in concert singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." In addition, the city editor of the LA Times where Jack works is "Dorothy" Fowler and guess where's she originally from....you guessed right...Kansas. I also love when an author references one of his other books within the book I'm reading. In this case, Jack mentions reading a series of stories about a lawyer who did his business out of a Lincoln. Nice shoutout to Mickey Haller of The Lincoln Lawyer fame.

Unlike other authors who don't have Connelly's talent, he doesn't have to make his stories so convoluted that you can't even understand them. He also doesn't resort to having the villain be one of the investigators as so many other authors "cop out" and do. He writes a clear-cut story from start to finish and it's always one you can't put down. I always comment that I read very few books in a given year that would get a "10" rating from me. In the mystery/thriller category, this is one for 2009, a "Big 10". The only other two books in this genre that I've read this year and have also received a "10" rating from me were The Lincoln Lawyer and The Brass Verdict. Surprise, surprise, they were also written by Connelly. This is obviously one satisfied fan.

The big "D"
By Living Life -
The Scarecrow
Michael Connelly can write, and in the first half of his "the Scarecrow" much of his ability comes out. The start of the story moves well, suspense builds and the character development works. Cyber stalking kicks in and I was "trapped" in the suspense of how powerful - and powerless Jack McEvoy became with the abilities of the stalker to literally shut out the reporter from society; financially, identity theft and literally a man out in the cold. Now comes the big Disappointment: 1/2 way throught the book everything grinds to a halt. Connelly could not decide whether this story was about cyber-stalking, cold blooded (and brutal) murder, or an egomaniac of a criminal. The plot drags. Is predictable and I quickly lost interest in reading. The ending is one that has been rehashed over and over. I suggest reading some of his earlier works or another author's work...
