Doing business in India

This volume is excellent for travelers, investors and
cultural enthusiasts. The country has over a billion people
which speak 24 languages. Relevant megatrends are in
agriculture, manufacturing infrastructure, consumer goods
and knowledge-based services i.e. artificial intelligence.
Tata steel has the lowest cost production. Korea Hyundai
is now the second biggest car manufacturer. Power generation
continues to be unreliable. So, there is a significant
business opportunity for outside companies. In 2007, the GNP
was a trillion dollars ! The top countries in GDP rank are
now USA, China, Japan and India- in that order.
Poverty is still a huge problem. There are 300 million
people surviving on less than a dollar a day. 800 million
Hindus live in India. The country is a home to more Muslims
than Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran and Iraq combined !
Governmentally, India is a Parliamentary democracy.
Complex regulations force many businesses into an underground
economy. In addition, seniority and age count for more than
merit alone. Personal relationships are paramount here.
90% of Indians aren't fluent in English. Approximately
2/3 of the population live in local villages. Radio covers
about 90% of the population.The Bombay Stock Market and
National Stock Exchange are the main investment
clearhouses.
The English Common Law is foundational to Indian legal
practice very much like the USA and Great Britain.
The author recommends that businesspeople get professional
legal guidance at key juncture points in the contractual
process. 3rd party arbitration should be requested in order
to facilitate contractual disagreements and mis-understandings.
A strong point of the book is that Indian-English vocabulary
is described in great detail for the benefit of visitors.
The book would be extremely helpful for people seeking to
visit India for the first time.

Current Economic Climate in India

"Doing Business in 21st Century India" by Gunjan Bagla is a small book packed full of information about the current economic climate in India. After reading this book, I see why there are so many jobs being outsourced to India, and so many Indians working in professional fields in the United States.
Bagla describes India's business and political climate in context and with background information. Imagine Spain, France, Germany, Poland, and Denmark, all with their different languages, customs, religions, and ethnicities as one country. This would be India. He describes Indian as an elephant, not as a tiger, where one strategy, one view, one vision is not the big picture.
The chapter, India in Context, briefly covers the British Colonial time to modern day, the nine major religions, the different terrains and climates, the government, corruption and the underground economy. The chapter Cross-Cultural Communication not only identifies differences between American and Indian business culture, but also between different parts of India! Other chapters include marketing, accounting and legal issues, finance and traveling between her and there. There is also a glossary of Indian English.
"Doing Business" is a very interesting, quick pace, easy-to-read, fact-full book with many anecdotes to illustrate the points. I came away with a greater appreciation of the Indians I know, and a different view of the power Indian has and is becoming. Even if you aren't in business, this book will provide you with background and understanding of one of the world's upcoming superpowers, India.
