Second only to the Titanic's 1912 collision with an iceberg in terms of famous sinkings of ocean liners, the Lusitania, also a British luxury ship, was torpedoed in May_ 1915 by a German submarine and in 18 minutes went under the waves off the coast of Ireland. Because 123 of the dead were American, the destruction of the Lusitania was a step in drawing the U.S. into World War I, already raging in Europe. In 1993 a team working with underwater explorer Robert Ballard, discoverer of the Titanic's remains, used a small submarine to find the wreckage of the Lusitania. Ballard profiles the luxurious life of the Lusitania while in trans-Atlantic service and reconstructs its scandalous wartime "assassination" in this oversize book. And in addition to profuse illustrations of the liner during its life and creepy ones of its carcass lying on the ocean floor, Ballard and his coauthor address the controversy that has surrounded the Lusitania's sinking from that day to this: Why did it explode so violently when the torpedo hit and then sink so quickly? Beautiful Book

The illustrations and photographs alone make this book worth owning. It is very direct and to the point for the most part.
Also of interest is the contrast between Lusitania, a shallow water wreck, and vessels such as Titanic and Bismarck which are under miles of water.

Amazing, simply Amazing!

In 8th grade, I had to do a research project on the RMS Lusitania. No book helped more then Ballard's. I practically read the book 5 times over, some times just for fun. I must say that Dr. Ballard got me interested in shipwrecks.
The book was an excellent source of information. And Ballard's unique writing style brought it all together. He writes about real people on the doomed liner. We see the world through their eyes. This makes the sinking come alive and become so much more real. This book becomes an excellent study tool or just a pleasure read.
I must also praise the artist, who painted the pictures in the book. They are amazing! I had to do a double-take on just about every picture, they look so real!
After my project, I had to return the book to the library. I wanted to by it online but was disappointed to find that it is out of stock. I'm delited on having this book, I love it. Dr. Ballard really has a gift, he brings the world closer to our lost ships then we could ever get on our own! Exploring the Lusitania is simply Amazing!

Excellent book with lots of photos

Excellent book with lots of photos, underwater paintings and an illuminating history of the Lusitania followed by the search for it. It is an exceptionable book but it's worth pointing out that this seems to be the same book as 'Robert Ballard's Lusitania'. I do have that version and other than the cover redesign, it is the same book. Note also that 'Robert Ballard's Guadalcanal' is the same book as 'Lost Ships Of Guadalcanal' just the cover and title has been changed. The problem is that without a 'Look Inside' option it's almost impossible to tell unless you own one of the copies.
