In December 1985 Dian Fossey's life came to a violent end when an unknown assailant split her skull open with her own bush-knife in the remote Parc des Volcans in Rwanda, 19 years after her arrival in Africa to study the rare mountain gorillas. Mowat, author of Never Cry Wolf and Sea of Slaughter, had access to Fossey's private papers; he has used excerpts from her diaries, amplifying the material with interviews from people who knew her wellfriends, enemies, colleagues, lovers. Fossey was an attractive, intelligent, determined woman; she was duped by some of the men in her life and, in the end, victim of ugly rumors and lies. Mowat redresses the record and offers a new theory about her murder in Africa in 1985. He believes that the two-year extension of her visa was Fossey's death warrant, that she had become a threat to Rwandans who wanted to exploit parkland for tourismnot a poacher, but a hired assassin killed Fossey. The murder of Dian Fossey at her research camp in Rwanda focused world attention on her 19 years of struggle to study and preserve the mountain gorilla. Mowat ( Never Cry Wolf ) has, as intended, organized Fossey's journals into a biography that quotes her writings so heavily as to be autobiographical. Much of the text parallels material in Fossey's Gorillas in the Mist ( LJ 5/15/83) but provides additional insights into her personal life, difficulties in maintaining funding, and the continuation of her work up to her death in 1985. This gripping, action-packed story is essential reading for all who understand the sacrifice of self for the preservation of other species. Highly recommended. anyway my dear mother was pleased very much to receive this book

I've owned this book for 25 yrs.while visiting my elderly sick mother last week she mentioned she wanted the book,as she must have read mine years ago,so I sent a new one to her....she has a stuffed gorilla in a small rocking chair which my father bought her years ago and she told me it's name was Digit.....I guessed it to be KoKo after the gorilla with the kitten friend Oddball.......anyway my dear mother was pleased very much to receive this book,and I can picture her reading it in her loft high up in her mountain home.Thank You So Much.

Yes, It's True...You Really Can be More Creative

This book should be read in combination with A Kick in the Seat of the Pants...and preferably read first. Just a suggestion. Von Oech demonstrates in his thinking and in his writing the same principles he advocates so eloquently. In Whack, first published in 1983, he identifies ten "locks" which limit (if not preclude) creative thinking:

The Right Answer

That's Not Logical

Follow the Rules

Be Practical

Play Is Frivolous

That's Not My Area

Avoid Ambiguity

Don't Be Foolish

To Err Is Wrong

I'm Not Creative

How does each limit (if not preclude) creative thinking? How can each be "unlocked"? To what extent are these barriers interdependent? Von Oech devotes a separate chapter to each of the ten, answering these and other questions while providing various exercises in support of his explanations.

Whack will be immensely valuable to executives in any organization which needs a culture within which to generate and then nourish fresh ideas and new perspectives. The same is true of all self-employed people (especially independent consultants) whose customers or clients expect them to address the same need. Finally, I think that school, college, and university classroom teachers can devise all manner of appropriate applications of von Oech's ideas. When you listen to Richard Feyman's lectures on physics (now available on audio cassettes), you suspect that he has read all of von Oech's books. He probably didn't. Nonetheless, he and von Oech are kindred spirits.

In addition to von Oech's A Kick in the Seat of the Pants, there are other excellent books also worthy of your consideration. They include those written by Edward de Bono, Guy Claxton, Michael Michalko, and Joey Reiman.

This is an excellent book, it really helps you to think outside the box from the very beginning, specially with the roman numerals exercise it gives you one of those eureka! moments.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be more creative, after you read this book, there is no limit to where you can go...

I used the first version of this book while in college for a classroom project on creative problem-solving. The book gave some very good ideas on how to "get the juiced flowing." This updated version is a continuation of that. Give it a read and see what's inside!

Every two-page spread is exquisitely bordered by a wood print leaf pattern and includes a sage little quote to set the mood or beckon the muse (such as "People who keep journals have life twice." --Jessamyn West). The large format (11.25 by 9.75 inches) gives writers plenty of room to scrawl down their thoughts and even offers ample space for adding personal artwork or gluing in cut-out images. Several pocket folders are bound into the back for carrying clippings, postcards, or dry leaves--whatever whimsy dictates. A spellbreaker to lead us to the beauty in the beast.

At first glance The Illustrated Discovery Journal may appear to be a simple book, and yet it holds a simple truth. We have forgotten as women, how profoundly beautiful we are. As we add the snippets of our lives and dreams to the waiting pages, a fairy tale unfolds before our very eyes. Sarah once again, in her brilliant simplicty is the fairy godmother who breaks the spell. She helps us find our beauty and truth beneath the beast that is reflected by the disappointments of our selves, our loved ones, our weight, our lost loves. We are all a glorious spirit waiting to be brought to life. Thank you Sarah for taking the risks to let us love ourselves for who we are, the glorious children of God.

Very enjoyable

There isn't too much writing in this book actually. It revolves mostly around making series of collages from amgazine clippings, etc around different self discovery themes. This is a refreshing change from the usual "Write, write, write!" I found that I felt MORE creative and very relaxed. It's a fun return to the "paste and scissors" free-for-all of your early school days.
The only frustration I experienced was that you have to wait a while to gather up enough pictures in your theme before you can actually start putting a collage together.
The themes include: Authenic Style, Entertainment, Authenic Sucess, The House of Belonging, Return to Self, Mystery, Sacred connections, Spiritual Journey, and Someday.
I was surprised by what pops up out of your subconcious when you look at your pictures as a collection -something that isn't as likely to happen with just writing where you can tend to over-analyze.

Scott King, the youngest son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., grew up in a world that was forever changing as a direct result of his father's life and, more importantly, of his father's death. In this memoir of his own life, King attempts to illuminate the significance of growing up under the weight of his father's legacy, struggling to live up to everything his last name has come to stand for. He sadly records his failure to finish his degree at Morehouse College, a tradition for male members of the King family going back to "Great-granddaddy A.D. Williams [who] was in the Morehouse class of 1898, the second graduating class of its existence." He recounts his first attempt to serve as president of the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change, where he was elected to the position amid controversy from the board of directors, and subsequently resigned after five months. However, King fails to take the reader on any sort of coherent emotional journey through his struggle to become a "King," and the narrative is marred by clunky transitions, uninteresting digressions and a sometimes combative tone at odds with the gravity King gives his subject matter. There are terrific accounts here of the conspiracy theories surrounding his father's assassination, the famous political and entertainment figures that have always been a part of King's circle and an extended family that helped to support and shape the children of a legend, but they are mired in tedious details that detract from the story King is trying to tell.

Dexter King, who bears an incredible resemblance to his famous father, was seven years old when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. In this memoir, he recalls the weight of expectations placed on him as the son, grandson, and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, even before his father became famous as a civil rights leader. Traumatized by the death of his father, Dexter recalls the feelings of doom among all the King children, giving them a special kinship with the Kennedys. A host of surrogate fathers, including Andrew Young, provided needed male guidance, but Dexter recalls the powerful strain of living up to the particular expectations placed on King's children as they searched for their own individual identities. He recollects his own personal struggle with faith and aimless years of drifting professionally, dabbling in photography, law enforcement, and music. Dexter also details his troubled tenure as president of the King Center in Atlanta, the controversies regarding protection of intellectual property rights to his father's speeches and writings, and the family's struggle to sort through conspiracy theories surrounding King's assassination. Finally their side of the story

I read this book by Dexter King, but I have also read Growing Up X. There were some similarities between both books, but there were some differences also. I had heard some of the rumors and speculation about the King family trying to milk Dr. King's legacy in the monetary sense. However, Dexter does a good job of clearing things up about how much time and money is spent protecting his father's legacy due to the fact that some individuals and corporations believe and/or assume that Dr. Kings' speeches and papers are public property and can use them for monetary profit. I agree whole heartly with the King family in protecting their father's legacy including all of his speeches and writings. The thing that stood out the most to me pertaining to this issue was that we as blacks in America discount great black thinkers, intellectuals and people who take a stance in the black community. We have a belief that our black intellects work such Dr King, Malcolm X and Medgar Evers is not as valuable as compared to that of their white counter parts such as Nixon, Kennedy or Bush.
Dexter King also gives us some insight into how he grew up near housing projects in Vine City, attended a exclusive private school then public high school, and life at Morehouse. I had no ideal that Dexter's mother currently lives in Vine City, because gossips have always said she was living in a huge mansion in Buckhead. Next Dexter talks about his love life, but never gives any names but calls one serious girlfriend "Mon Ami." I would recommend this book to anyone trying to find out more about the King family.

Interested in Exploring the King Family?

Everyone has a story to tell, and Growing Up King is the life story of the third child of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dexter King has not had a life that many of us would envy. Nor has any member of his family, most difficult I would imagine would be the tremendous burden cast on Mrs. Coretta Scott King who was thrown into single motherhood with 4 young children. It is no secret that the last name of King can be perceived as both blessing and curse. I live in Atlanta, where the majority of this story takes place and find that around town we have expectations of how the Kings are "supposed" to be. They are, maybe incorrectly elevated, to the status of royalty among the African-American community, and that can certainly prove to be difficult to handle. This is well-intentioned adoration, but non-the less made difficult to handle as children and Dexter has found that it gets no better in adulthood. It is this dilemma that somewhat serves as imputes to the writing of this book.
Make no mistake, I've learned a lot more about Dexter King and the King family in general but literarily speaking, Growing up King is poorly written. The story is chronologically told, but jumps around quite a bit in thought and expression. He jumps from his thoughts, to the thoughts of those around him to actual dialogue quite a bit which makes it hard to follow. Further, if you aren't familiar with the geography of Atlanta and some of the prominent figures in Atlanta politics or the Atlanta community you might have difficulty following the massive amount of name and location dropping that is found in the book. A case in point would be the fact that he talks about seeking privacy, protection and peace for his mother while giving out her address where she still resides today. Another interesting dichotomy is the striking resemblance in the tone and tenure of Growing up King with its predecessor, Growing up X by Ilyasah Shabazz daughter of slain Nation of Islam leader, Malcolm X. My instant impression, and my impression especially after reading the book, was that Dexter was trying to follow in someone else's footsteps, still not finding his personal way, because he thinks that is what is expected of him.
I gained greater insight to this quite, unimposing man. I learned a great deal about him personally and I appreciate the fact that he felt comfortable enough to share himself with the world. He shares a lot, and in my opinion, maybe a bit too much but everybody has a story to tell. If you are a fan of the King family, read Growing up King.

A great discovery!

I have found this book to be so very eye opening to myself and the Sunday school class I facilitate of 60 women. There are so many nuggets of wisdom on how we are wired for God by God to have relationship with Him that we miss because we don't see who He has made us to be. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the Word of God concerning our relationship with ourselves. A Daily Companion

I was lead to buy this book with no initial intention to buy anything! I was going through a personal crisis but wouldn't have thought of buying a book with this title. Nonetheless I just felt I should, so I did. It became the second best thing to the Bible for me. I can't believe how much I gained.. I normally get bored halfway through any book and end up putting it down. Not this one. I've underlined so much I think I've covered half the book in my pen! It's like I need it just to keep my mind in the right direction, my thoughts where they should be, and to give me what I need to face the day with strength! It honestly gives me the tools for confidence I haven't found in any other book. I treasure this one.

Interesting Book on Leadership.

I bought this book to complete an assignment, back when I was in college. I had to read a book about leadership. I just happened to know about this author, and truley respect her opinion on a lot of subjects, so when I discovered this book I bought it and found it insightful, and easy to read.

A Must-Read For LEaders

If you have a calling to be a leader in the ministry then Joyce has written an excellent book to help you along. This book is adapted from her 12-tape audio cassette album entitled "The Making Of A Leader", so if you enjoy this book you may want to purchase album from her website .... In this book she reveals the many different heart-types that are needed for leadership and the heart-types that need to be changed. She also offers encouragements to those who are struggling along the process of becoming a leader, showing us how God uses tests and trials to make us what He wants us to be. She also shares about the different kinds of tests that a leader in the making will have to undergo. There is also information on the importance of balance in our life. Most of all, Joyce encourages us that no matter how old you are, what is your track record, or how many problems you have, the potential to be all God wants you to be is still within you waiting to be unleashed. She also shares personal stories from her life that will make you laugh and help you along in the areas you hurt the most. A good read that will help you.

Great book for Ministry Leaders and Ministry team members

I really enjoyed reading this book and revisiting scriptures that the author uses to support this book. The leadership tests described in the book gave me great insight into examining my cause and my role as a leader. Joyce Meyer provided great personal examples of what she has experienced as a Leader. I would definitely recommend this book for Ministry leaders. I have plans to read this book again. I have also shared what I have read with members of the ministry in which I serve.
As a side note. I once saw this book at a store. There were at least 10 or more copies. I went back a short time later and they were all gone.

Words of Encouragement for All Disappointments

This may seem a little odd, but I am neither divorcing nor divorced; and I am a guy. I will tell you that this book of daily thoughts and meditations does have a perspective geared toward women and toward divorce. I would also say that men can benefit from this book too and about 95% of what is in the book is geared toward God's blessing and provision in any challenging situation or life disappointment. Ours happened to surround an adolescent daughter; and everything that accompanied that entire situation. If you think about it, there are lots of situations in life that involve unexpected change, loss, separation, etc. Divorce is only one of them.

I would recommend this book to anyone - male or female; who is or has walked through a "valley of the shadow". It will change you and help restore you. You will learn that no matter how hard you tried or what walk of life you are from, that you are not alone, and you are not the first person something bad has happened to. You will also learn, in small readings that take 3-5 minutes each day to get through, that you have a watchful, loving and caring God, who sees, knows, helps, and understands.

I love the way she gives a quote for the day and then relates it back to her experiences. Madonna in the 90's

I have to give Madonna credit for being the bold artist that she was in the 90's. Her book, Sex, with it's portfolio of nude images with the combination of design and production was beyond any book I've seen. However, I don't think of this book to be erotic but an example to Madonna's metaphorosis into the artist that she is now. It's like watching someone grow through pictures. Most 80's performers didn't last as long as Madonna's as she continued to reinvent her self through her career. The Madonna today would never produce the sex book (she's writing childrens story books now). "Sex" captures Madonna in her most dramatic reinvention.

I recommend this to any collector!

*Starred Review* Hitchens, who, in his earlier books, has expressed contempt for both God and Mother Teresa (although not in that order), is often described as a contrarian. In fact, in his book Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001), he himself noted that he “can appear insufferable and annoying,” albeit without intending to. This memoir, bracing, droll, and very revealing, gives him yet another description: storyteller. He writes with a voice you can hear clearly, warmed by smoke and whiskey, and draws readers into his story, which proves as personal as it is political. As with many memoirs, it is not the public moments that are so fascinating, though there are plenty of those. Hitchens takes readers with him to Havana and Prague, Afghanistan and Iraq; tests himself by being waterboarded (he was disappointed in his early capitulation); and hobnobs with politicians and poets. He almost gets himself beaten up by defacing a poster in Iraq with a Hitler mustache. But the most intriguing stories are the personal ones, both from his early days, at home and at boarding school, and from his later life, when he learns that his mother was Jewish, which, if only technically, makes him Jewish as well. This revelation leads Hitchens on a quest to learn the story of his family, many of whom died in the Holocaust. How this new identity squares with his oft-proclaimed atheism sheds a different light on the meaning of religious identity. (He struggles mightily with his political identity as well.) Few authors can rile as easily as Hitchens does, but even his detractors might find it difficult to put down a book so witty, so piercing, so spoiling for a fight. Christopher Hitchens stands alone among 20th- and 21st-century pundits for his enthusiastic enmity and political flip-flopping, but while he makes no apologies for his beliefs, he does acknowledge their intrinsic contradictions. Critics praised Hitchens's frankness in sharing the details of his mother's suicide and of his breezy bisexuality, but they simultaneously balked at his decision to omit significant people and events (i.e., his wives, his children, and his role in Bill Clinton's impeachment). They also objected to his relentless name-dropping and some overly dense prose, and a few were appalled that Hitchens would continue to insist that Saddam Hussein did indeed possess WMDs. Despite these complaints, Hitch-22 is a sharp, rebellious, and sometimes bawdy account of the making of a modern mastermind.

Enjoyable and Enlightening Memoir by a Complex Man

"Hitch 22" is a memoir, not an autobiography, by Christopher Hitchens, who seems to go out of his way to ensure that everyone in the world has at least one compelling reason to disagree with him. Those well familiar with Hitchens will know what I'm talking about, but for those that only know him from one of his guises, a little perspective.

Hitchens works as a book reviewer for "The Atlantic", a political and culture commentator for both "Slate" and "Vanity Fair", a "talking head" on too many news shows to mention, a "semi-professional atheist" ('God is not Great'), an all around activist and speaker for the causes he deems important, and I'm sure a half dozen other roles I'm not aware of.

I defy anyone to agree with every single one of the comments below:

- Margaret Thatcher is kind of sexy
- Communism is good
- Pre-Glasnost Russia was bad
- Gore Vidal is full of it
- God does not exist
- Henry Kissigner is best viewed as a Mass Murderer
- George H.W. Bush knew that Iraq would attack Kuwait well beforehand
- The USA was justified in attacking both Iraq and Afghanistan post 9-11
- Bertie and Wooster are hilarious
- Mother Teresa was a sadist
- The USA is a great country
- British Boarding Schools are twisted

Well, we can probably all agree on the last one, but see what I mean? He does indeed "contain volumes", and his views have shifted over time - to the right in many cases, as he admits.

His memoir does not "explain" who Hitchens is, nor does he intend to. What he succeeds in doing admirably and engagingly is to give his perspectives on the people he's known, and the experiences he's had, not necessarily in chronological order. I don't have enough background in contemporary English Literature to appreciate everything he's written about the authors he's known, but even there, one finds that the people one would think both stuffy and reserved were in their time a "bawdy" and lewd group of jokesters, fond of obscene word games, and experiences both Cerebral and Slummy.

What I found most enlightening about his memoir is his memories of boarding school. Many reviews and articles about Hitch 22 will focus on the Hitchens' statements about the high degree of homosexual activity that he says existed in the boarding schools he attended. His claims (which I have no logical reason to doubt) seem pretty stunning to me, a small town boy from the midwest, but what I find most interesting how his perspective on religion seems to have been shaped by his schools.

Most Americans "get religion" through their families, and in my experience, see God and Church as something personal, rather than public. Hitchens on the other hand experienced religion as something that forbade the sexual experiences that he says were common in his schools (an oppressor of feeling and emotion), the presence of the State (Church of England) and "one more obligation" in his curriculum (compulsory attendance). The "hitch" however, was that while Hitchens HAD to go to Church services, his teachers could not force the students to worship or kneel. It seems intriguing that Hitchens chose to "resist" religion by not kneeling, in emulation of an older boy that he admired.

Now, I could be completely off base about this, but it seems as though Hitchens' antipathy to religion, was first established not on a mature consideration of faith and reason, but as the only available tactic for resisting the ever-present authority of the school and teachers that many of his readers will never face. Resisting religion ~may~ have been either the wellspring of what became a history of resisting authority and defying convention wisdom, or the first indication of that character he already had in him.

I could be way off base, and probably am, but I am glad that I had the opportunity to read and enjoy Mr. Hitchens' memoir. He's the kind of person that I would enjoy listening to as he held court over a table, with Spirits and words aflow. I am sure I could not agree with everything he said, and as an experienced debater, he would skewer anything I could have to say in return, and perhaps not always in the kindest manner. Even so, I'd gladly have, and later relish the experience.

I don't think anyone has to completely "like" Christopher Hitchens, but I do think that he is worthy of everyone's respect, at least for some aspect. Hate his politics? Read his book reviews - they're delicious. Disagree with him on religion? Read his thoughts on human rights and freedom.

And then, read his memoir, to better understand and appreciate him. He's worth it.

Sophisticated Story Telling From One Of Vanity Fair's Best

Decidedly an interesting read, though I am still wondering how I managed to get through this book in a single (and very long) evening.
Described as a memoir, this book covers a lot of territory. Journalist/writer Hitchens details his childhood, family, life in English boarding school, college years at Oxford, dalliances with socialism, political and religious views(though an affirmed atheist), career as a war correspondent and author, and encounters with the famous and infamous. Along the way, he diverges into his parents indifferent marriage, his mother's suicide, and the discovery of his mother's jewish lineage years after her death.
While I thought the book in its entirety was interesting, some sections appealed to me more than others. Hitchens had an early encounter with Bill Clinton and was convinced that Clinton was possibly an operative reporting on american students anti-war activities to the CIA while at Oxford. He also claimed that he was probably present when Clinton didn't 'inhale' marijuana. Another section delved into researching his jewish heritage. And then there was his take on the Iraq War. The book was loaded with observations and insites that were interesting and at times deadly serious. Whether I agreed with him or not, he presented interesting points of view that reflected his varied life experiences.
Initially, my impression of Hitchen's writing style seemed to be more essayist than memoirist. However, it quickly became apparent that this was his story regardless of references to history, literature, and momentary divergences (such as the purpose and usage of the acronym WASP). While his text might at times seem elevated to the average reader, it took little time for me to get used to it. Often quite humorous, he managed to keep my attention.

Fascinating life

It's really quite fascinating that Christopher Hitchens had as normal a life as he had considering all the events he experienced early in life. He starts his memoir with the suicide-homicide of his mother and her lover in the first chapter, then continues on with his commander dad. His parents alone were quite a contrasting couple that only stayed together because divorce caried such a stigma. Then he experienced boarding schools where bullying was quite common and where boys experimented with their sexuality.

His gift of the English language and the accompanying wit were established early on. Hitchen writes as he speaks, with passion and drama that may turn some people, especially those with a weak understanding of advanced English grammar, off. His life unfolds as the post-war wars of England in the 1950s and 1960s, giving this memoir a good example of a personal history of the times.

What struck me is the style of his writing. He writes from a deeply psychological perspective, as if everyone or everything around him is not quite in his senses. He maintains a certain distance, an aloofness, from all the events, but perhaps that is from the jobs he has held over the years as fighter for oppressed African states. Other parts, like chapter "Chris or Christopher" (pages 93-109) read like a political thriller in his often colorful and eyebrow-raising verbiage. He didn't like Bill Clinton ("the habitual and professional liar") even in his Oxford days and he certainly had no respect for American politicians during the Vietnam war.

It really should come as no surprise that he is an atheist, a left-leaner (International Socialist as he calls himself) after the life he's had; his stories alone carry the explanation. But I don't blame him. Hitchen addresses the reader as "dear Reader" as if he knows we want to read about his life. And at times the events he writes about appear fabricated just for us "Dear readers."

I started this book not knowing a thing about Hitchens, but finished the book quite impressed. I may not agree with all his political thinking, but his life alone explains why he thinks the way he does.

This book is excessively long. For a quick summary of Hitchens the one chapter I can recommend is "Something of Myself" toward the end of the book. There he summarizes his philosophies but doesn't explain them in detail as in other chapters.

I gave this four instead of five stars for two reasons: chapters tend to go on and on. (Seriously, did he have to be so wordy?!) But perhaps as a Vanity Fair writer this is expected. The other reason is his sometimes aggressive distaste for certain people, and his blatant refusal to accept differing political believes. This book may be detested by right-wingers and conservatives; let them be forewarned.
