The Gift of an Ordinary Day: A Mother's Memoir, by Katrina Kenison

The Gift of an Ordinary Day is an intimate memoir of a family in transition-boys becoming teenagers, careers ending and new ones opening up, an attempt to find a deeper sense of place, and a slower pace, in a small New England town. It is a story of mid-life longings and discoveries, of lessons learned in the search for home and a new sense of purpose, and the bittersweet intensity of life with teenagers--holding on, letting go.

Poised on the threshold between family life as she's always known it and her older son's departure for college, Kenison is surprised to find that the times she treasures most are the ordinary, unremarkable moments of everyday life, the very moments that she once took for granted, or rushed right through without noticing at all.

The relationships, hopes, and dreams that Kenison illuminates will touch women's hearts, and her words will inspire mothers everywhere as they try to make peace with the inevitable changes in store.

From Publishers Weekly
In her second affecting memoir about motherhood and nurturing (after Mitten Strings for God), Kenison, here at middle age with two sons in their teens, pursues with graceful serenity a time of enormous upheaval and transformation in her family's life. As her sons grew out of babyhood and into the new, unknown territory of adolescence, she no longer felt clear about what her life's purpose was supposed to be; their comfortable suburban Boston house of 13 years grew restraining, and Kenison longed for a simpler, more nature-connected lifestyle. Since neither she nor her husband, a publishing executive, was tied to a workplace (indeed, she was suddenly let go as the series editor of The Best American Short Stories after 16 years), they were content to be rootless for over three years, living mostly with Kenison's parents until the building of their new home on bucolic hilltop land purchased in New Hampshire was completed. Meanwhile, Kenison's youngest, Jack, began a new high school, while the older boy, Henry, a musician, applied to colleges, and the family had to adjust both to the move and to the startling, delightful pleasures of country life. This eloquent book is ...about longing and fulfillment , taking stock of failures and achievements, a search for the elusive "something more" of one's existence-and a reminder that life's seemingly mundane moments are often where we find beauty, grace and transformation.―Family Circle Magazine,

"Kenison writes so beautifully and clearly about what is most important in family life."―Jane Hamilton, author of A Map of the World and Laura Rider's Masterpiece

An honest, graceful book that every parent will appreciate. In the thick of challenging changes, emotional troughs, and tender realizations the reader will find comfort and guidance. Here is a fine writer, a dedicated mother, and a spiritual seeker speaking intimately to parents in search of wisdom."―Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and Writing in the Sand

How I admire this mid-life mom, who writes with strong contemplative spirit and a heart wide open to change. Her memoir is a courageous and generous contribution to deepening American family life.―Nancy Mellon, author of Body Eloquence

"The Gift of an Ordinary Day is much more than a memoir of motherhood; it is an inspired and inspiring meditation on midlife. What Katrina Kenison gives mothers-her gift-is the promise of reinventing ourselves as our kids grow up and we grow older, and the assurance of an invitingly abundant landscape on the far side of parenthood."―Lisa Garrigues, author of Writing Motherhood

A must read!
By Susan W. Swartz
If you are middle aged and dealing with children who are adolescents or pre- (or post-) adolescents and are wondering why your life is so complicated and longing for a life that is simpler and more meaningful, then this is definitely the book for you! Approaching her 50's, Katrina Kennison suddenly finds herself overcome with longing for a life where her family is more connected and not so overwhelmed by appointments and schedules and materialism and all those issues which make a family that was close when the children were young into a family of strangers when the children grow into adolescents. She decides to uproot her family from Boston back to her childhood home in New Hampshire and falls in love with a summer cabin on 80 acres of land with a view of mountains and a pond, stream and woodlands. The cabin proves unlivable and eventually needs to be torn down for a new dwelling but, during the summer her family lives there without the benefit of computers and other accepted city distractions, they learn how to become a family again. At first resistant, they eventually slow down, read books, play catch, explore the land, watch the stars, and generally have a wonderful time enjoying their new lives. Throughout the ensuing few years of dealing with the potential empty nest, Katrina comes to find herself, find a new occupation, new friends, a new life altogether. She finds the meaning in her existence--a meaning that had been missing in their former busy city lives.

Although the prose is beautiful, it could be edited...that is the only fault I could find with this book. It is a heart-wrenching, speak-to-the gut book for any woman (or person) in their 40's, 50's or 60's, with children or without; to anyone who has questioned the meaning of their busy life and wondered what it would be like to live differently, to live a more simple, slower existence.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough--it has changed my life and the way that I look at and address my college-age children. Instead of hanging on to them, I now see that they need to find their own paths through life and this book has helped me to let go and to learn to find meaning in myself and my life as more than a mother. It is long but beautifully written; in places it is not easy to hear what the author has to say; but, believe me...every word of hers has the kind of value that will change your life.

Regret buying it
By Marlene
It's my turn to host our book club and a "lighter read" was requested. We're all mothers so I thought this would be good. There's a video on youtube of Kenison that will bring you to tears, so I was really expecting this book to be something special. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book and only finished it because I had to for the book club. Her writing is so laborious, so flowery, and too poetic. There are a lot of run on sentences. I don't really like stream of consciousness writing, and I wouldn't really classify it as that, but it's close. I did enjoy the descriptions of her interactions with her boys but there wasn't much of that. The first half of the book is about selling her house (without a PLAN) and buying a dilapidated old house that needs to be razed. I found myself wondering, "I thought this book would be about motherhood?" And it's in there, but it's hidden in between page after page of contemplation. Not the book for me.

Maybe I'll appreciate this book in 25 years
By Clarisse McClellan
I cannot wait for this book to be over. This is yet another memoir that is mostly a diary turned into a book without sufficient editing.

The book followed a tiresome and repetitive formula, something like:

My life isn't exactly what I thought it would be. My sons aren't what I thought they would be. My house isn't what I thought it would be. And then the message, which is repeated over and over, is to embrace life, to live in the moment, to appreciate what you have instead of what you hoped you would have.

That is a nice message. But it's as if the author has to learn it 40 times throughout the book, and we the reader are dragged along through every banal epiphany.

After reading the comments, it seems like this book does resonate with people who are going through the exact same thing as she is. I'm in a different place in my life, so perhaps that has something to do with my dislike for the book.

She also comes across as being pretty self-absorbed and selfish. She makes huge decisions despite her entire family's protest in the name of self-growth. It seems like a problem of "wherever you go, there you are" to me. As in, she can change locations and homes as often as she wants, but she's still going to be herself. Which as far as I can tell, would be exhausting. I would want a break from it, too.

All in a Lifetime: An Autobiography, by Ruth K. Westheimer

Dr Ruth Westheimer is everyone's favourite sex therapist. All in a Lifetime is the memoir of her journey from the horrors of war to the fulfillment of the American dream. The book is as warm, humorous, and candid as Dr Ruth herself.

From Publishers Weekly
This autobiography by the tiny, energetic TV and radio personality "Dr. Ruth" is jam-packed with fascinating details about her remarkable life, both before and after she became America's most popular sex therapist. The book starts in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1939, when as a 10-year-old she boarded a "kinder transport" train for Switzerland with dozens of other German-Jewish children, never to see her parents again. Karola Siegal spent World War II in a Swiss-Jewish children's home and, at 16, emigrated to Israel, where she traded her "too German" first name for her middle name, Ruth, and began a quest for an education that led her to the Sorbonne and to New York, where she eventually received a doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College and a certificate as a psychosexual therapist from Cornell. Not to worry, Dr. Ruth is as open about her own life as she is in giving advice to others, and she candidly discusses her own sexual awakenings, her three marriages, her two children and her delight in her media career in this engaging book.

From Library Journal
Writing in the down-to-earth style her many fans know, "Dr. Ruth" begins her autobiography in 1939, the year she was sent from Frankfurt to a school for German-Jewish orphans in Switzerland. She never saw her parents or grandmother again. The sadness, loss, and hardships of those years and, following the war, in Israel on a kibbutz, form a compelling portion of this book. No less interesting is the story of her improbable rise from uneducated survivor to academician and, finally, sex therapist and media celebrity. Westheimer's distinctive voice is nearly audible. Because of her popularity and her inspirational story, this is recommended for most public and undergraduate libraries. Terrill Brooks, Baker Coll. Lib., Flint, Mich.

Inspirational
By Mary
This is the inspirational story of the life of holocaust survivor Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Throughout an early life of adversity, Dr. Ruth keeps on soldering through without a hint of self-pity.
At the age of eight, Dr. Ruth was evacuated, with hundreds of other children, from Germany to Switzerland. She lived in an orphanage for Jewish children, and did heavy house-cleaning for half the day and attended school for the other half. She never saw her parents or grandmother again.
At 17 Dr. Ruth emigrated to Israel to live on a Kibbutz, where she was exploited. Living in a tent, her job was cleaning full-time, and no one suggested forther schooling. After a year she left the Kibbutz and supported herself in various jobs and attended school.
The account of her years in France and her early years in the US is riviting. Dr. Ruth's strong spirit shining through every situation is inspirational.

What a woman!
By meiringen
Great autobiography of Dr. Ruth! So many things that I didn't know about her: fled Nazi Germany at age 10, never saw her family again, lived on a kibbutz in Israel, was a soldier for the Haganah, then came to the USA, where she found her career and true love.
Very open and candid, and also tragic at times. It's a book I couldn't put down, once I started reading it! Highly recommended!

Here, from a remarkable new literary talent, is a novel destined to become the Catch-22 of the Vietnam War--a poignant, darkly comic tale based on the author's own experiences as a Green Beret in Vietnam. This deeply affecting novel follows the trials of a Special Forces Unit dispatched to the Laotian jungle who stumble upon a heroin operation.

From Publishers Weekly
In this grimly sardonic but strained and only episodically effective first novel about the Vietnam War by a decorated 'Nam veteran, an unnamed American Army captain narrates the story of an infantry unit based in a reconnaissance post near the Laotion border. Although he is nominally in command, the outfit is in effect led by a brutal sergeant called "Shotgun," who serves as an all-purpose scout-sapper-killer. While McAfee invests heavily in irony, his approach could not be less subtle. He writes in a terse, telegraphic series of sentences and one-sentence paragraphs that are obviously intended to drive home any gruesome jokes or conclusions readers may have missed. Shotgun emerges as a cartoon figure in a savage story; the key enlisted men in the outfit, "Quiet Voice" and Spec. 7 Thompson, are puppets in his hands. The novel's key event is the arrival of Col. Basshorn, who orders the small unit on a mission into Laos, where the soldiers encounter Vietcong (although rarely), CIA operatives and drug smugglers as well as blood flukes and other repulsive creatures. McAfee furnishes some vivid description of the Mekong River and its tributaries, and his expository information about armaments is often interesting. Unfortunately, the story never emerges from the screen of nicknames that objectify the chief characters and the black humor that constitutes the book's chief tone.

By Northern Wanderer
If an English professor were reviewing this book he might say character development is often poor, too many characters come in and out and don't advance the plot, it is episodic rather than narrative, all sorts of loose ends wander through and the characters lack motivation, beside survival. All probably true but this also sort of sums up the Vietnam War, not a lot made sense except getting home in one piece. This isn't bad writing, it is a very sophisticated simplicity that takes a really really good writer to pull off.

That said, I laughed my ass off more than once and the end hit me like a fist, as he brought things home about the old man and the young boy. We have sinned but if we are lucky, we found redemption in time and in watching our children grow up.

Solw Walk in a Sad Rain
By Franscis
This book is amazing, touching, sometimes off color and off putting in ways only a book on war could be. It is well written and engaging. I felt a vested interest in the characters. I read this book because it was recommended to me by a former Army Ranger.

A book that fully captures the mind-set of a soldier
By Colin Schmied
I was given this book by a friend who raved about it. I expected yet another terrible "Vietnam was hell-don't you feel sorry for me" books. Instead I got to read a book that transcends that conflict and all others. The story and mood could easily be transplanted to any other conflict in history and thats what makes this book so compelling. As a former enlisted infantryman, I rarely read any accounts that accurately portray the bizzare and often irrational logic that one has to adopt to deal with the situations faced by a soldier. Most stories and recollections make soldiers clear-thinking and rational and are usually from the perspective of an officer or high ranking NCO who seem almost to enjoy the experience. Any bad decisions are made "out-of scene" by politcally motivated officers or out-of-touch politicians. They imply that things would be fine without these busybodies. McAfee throws away these stereotypical conventions and gives us the hazy and almost absurdist reasoning that governs a man in times of unrelenting stress and deprevation. Each character in this story clings to each other, and in one case a mortar, to try and ground themselves in an environment of chaos and incoherence. This book should be a classic and the fact that it is out-of-print is a disgrace considering how much junk out there should never have been printed in the first place. However you can swing it, get this book. You will not be disapointed.

Death of a Valentine (Hamish Macbeth Mysteries), by M. C. Beaton

Amazing news has spread across the Scottish countryside. The most famous of highland bachelors, police sergeant Hamish Macbeth, will be married at last. Everyone in the village of Lochdubh adores Josie McSween, Macbeth's newest constable and blushing bride-to-be.

While locals think Josie is quite a catch, Hamish has a case of prenuptial jitters. After all, if it weren't for the recent murder of a beautiful woman in a neighbouring village, there wouldn't be a wedding at all. For it was a mysterious Valentine's Day package--delivered to the victim before her death--that initially drew Hamish and Josie together on the investigation. As they work side by side, Hamish and Josie soon discover that the woman's list of admirers was endless, confirming Hamish's suspicion that love can be blind, deaf . . . and deadly.

From Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Beaton's enjoyable 25th Hamish Macbeth mystery (after 2008's Death of a Witch), a Valentine's Day parcel explodes in the face of the Scottish Highlands' Lammas festival queen, Annie Fleming, as soon as she tries to open it, killing her instantly. Hamish Macbeth, newly promoted to sergeant, would rather investigate with only his trusty pets in tow, but is instead forced to tote along his new constable, the less than professional Josie McSween. Considered prim and proper and a right innocent, Annie turns out to have been leading a less than virtuous double life, with no shortage of suspects in her murder. A much sought after bachelor, Hamish desperately tries to break the case, while Josie, with dreams in her eyes, strives to crack Hamish's heart. Will Josie succeed in getting Hamish to say I do at the altar? For all the book's farcical moments, Beaton takes care as usual to provide a satisfying police procedural. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Beaton’s cozies set in the fictional Highland village of Lochdubh and starring the crusty village constable Hamish Macbeth are sometimes so predictable in their “stranger comes to the village and gets murdered” or “irascible villager gets murdered” plotlines that the cozy quickly becomes a drowsy. It seems that Beaton bestirred herself for this, the twenty-fifth in the series. It combines her gift for scenic description with an inventive, constantly surprising plot. Two women are at the center of the action: one is a constable from Strathbane, assigned to work for Macbeth, who lives in perpetual fear of being transferred to the urban blight of Strathbane. The other woman is the town beauty, queen of the Lammas Fest, who dies after opening a letter-bomb Valentine. This beauty queen is, we learn, what Scotland Yard terms a “murderee,” someone whose life invites violence. Both Beaton fans and newcomers to cozies will find her latest explosive and engaging. --Connie Fletcher

I finished this book after midnight and to sleep! I couldn't put it down! Such a great story. Poor Hamish! I know someday he will find love but his ability solving criminal cases is great. Now need to fix the "bosses"!

Death of a Cozy
By JACK C. BROWN
In "Death of a Valentine" author M.C. Beaton puts newly-promoted (again!) Sergeant Hamish Macbeth and his village of Lochdubh through their paces. The Curry sisters continue to speak in chorus. Angela struggles with writing a new book. The women in Hamish's love life (ha!) Priscilla and Elspeth, are called into cameo roles.

The "mystery" to me is why such a contrived piece of fiction as "Death of a Valentine" was ever published. Beaton continues her forays into the more complexities of psychosis and violent types of homicide. These genres are not suited to Beaton's flat, two-dimensional writing style. Coincidences abound. Guns are liberally sprinkled along with bodies dotting the Scottish Highlands.

The editing is also slipshod. In one passage, character names are interchanged and this literary faux pas goes on for several pages.

Beaton made a name for herself in the "cozy" mystery genre -- no graphic violence, no profanity, and no explicit sex. Most often, the crime takes place "off stage."

The genuine mystery is why Beaton is trying to abandon a genre that has served her well for many years to become a poor woman's Ruth Rendell.

Death of a Series
By stonycal
I enjoyed the earlier Hamish books, but I think Beaton has run out of steam with this series. This latest entry is so ham-handed as to be almost a parody. I figured out very early on who did it and the plot is silly. The charm has worn thin--all the regular characters have remained static, so no surprises are in store for the reader; you know exactly how each will behave. The new characters have zero nuance; they're either bad people or featureless filler. Also, the copy I read had so many errors that it was distracting (floor when it should have said door, etc.) Beaton's Agatha Raisin series has followed a similar trajectory. She should either create a new detective or find a new line of work.

Change Your Words, Change Your Life: Understanding the Power of Every Word You Speak, by Joyce Meyer

#1 New York Times bestselling author Joyce Meyer discusses the importance of words in CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE:
"Words are a big deal. They are containers for power, and we have to decide what kind of power we want our words to carry. ... I believe that our words can increase or decrease our level of joy. They can affect the answers to our prayers and have a positive or negative effect on our future. ... One might say that our words are a movie screen that reveals what we have been thinking and the attitudes we have."

Building on the premises of her bestselling books, Power Thoughts and Living Beyond Your Feelings, Joyce examines how we use words-the vehicles that convey our thoughts and emotions-and provides a series of guidelines for cultivating talk that is constructive, healthy, healing, and used for good results.

Topics include:

  • The Impact of Words
  • How to Tame Your Tongue
  • How to be Happy
  • When to talk and when not to talk
  • Speaking Faith and Not Fear
  • The Corrosion of Complaints
  • Do you really have to give your opinion?
  • The importance of keeping your word
  • The power of speaking God's word
  • How to have a smart mouth

In "A Dictionary of God's Word" at the end of the book, Joyce provides dozens of scripture verses, arranged by topic, and recommends that we read them aloud to strengthen our vocabulary of healing words.

Practical Clarity and Truth Needed for Every Committed Christian
By O. Merce Brown
*****
This latest book by author Joyce Meyer is life-changing, literally. Like every Joyce Meyer book, it is clear, simple, very inspirational, and fully of hope and blessing. It is a book written for Christians, and in my opinion, deeply needed by the church. It is very realistic and practical, not a stereotypical "positive confession book", although it does advocate speaking positively and it does advocate confessing Scripture to walk in faith. It never advises denying reality. Instead, the author champions the concept of "speaking with faith instead of fear", which she explains that "...that doesn't mean that we deny our circumstances, but we do deny them the right to rule over us." In short, this is a balanced book, through and through.

The chapters explain so much about how our thoughts and our words are related to the quality of our lives--and about how we can take control of both our thoughts and our words and then speak and think in agreement with the Word of God. The chapters cover topics like: speaking with hope, speaking foolishly, when and how to speak about our problems, dealing with anger, "fasting our words", complaining, encouraging, loving people with our words, deep listening versus surface listening, self-talk (this was my favorite), gossip, giving our opinion, keeping our word, and so much more.

The author is very transparent. She writes that one key reason she wrote the book was to help herself. She gives many examples of the challenges she has faced, and how much time and effort it took to overcome them; she also admits some problems that she still struggles with. The book includes lots of illustrations of the points she makes in memorable and moving stories.

The book also addresses the challenges in the world of cyberspace and the changes in communication patterns brought about by technology.

The book ends with an appendix of Scripture verses for various difficult life situations, formatted and organized in a way that they can be read, believed, and said both in your heart and with your lips.

The author prays that this book will be a turning point for the reader, and I think it will be, as it was for me.

Highly recommended for Christians who want to live an empowered and obedient and joyful Christian life.

UPDATE 9/15/12: I originally read this book on the Kindle. I ordered a hardcopy too, because it is just that good. I wanted to mention that the font in the hardcopy is happily quite large--about 14 points or so--easy for these older eyes to read! The paper can take a highlighter without undue bleed-through as well.

This book truly does have the potential to change your life
By FaithfulReader.com
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." That old saying must be one of the biggest lies ever, right?

We all know that words have the potential to hurt us --- not physically, but emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Words have the ability to lighten our mood, make us smile or burst into tears, or even cause resentment and bitterness to seep into our hearts. As Proverbs 18:21 tells us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." (KJV) As the Bible also reveals, it is virtually impossible to tame the tongue. This is proven by the fact that, even though sermons about the effect of our words are presented from pulpits all over the world, we still continue to gossip, complain, criticize, and lash out at others. But what is impossible to do on our own is possible with God. Not easy, but possible.

Joyce Meyer understands the power of words. She admits that she alienated and hurt many people over the course of her life. Because of the abuse she endured as a child, she had plenty of reasons for her negative attitudes, critical spirit and harsh demeanor. But she eventually realized that this behavior wasn't producing positive results. More specifically, as stated on page 12 of her book, she learned that, "If a person continually sows negative thoughts, attitudes, and words, he will produce negative results in his life. Likewise, if he sows positive, life-filled thoughts, attitudes, and words, he will see good, positive results." When she began to study God's Word on the subject and applied the truths she found there, she gained major victory in this area. Meyer shares her wisdom in her latest book, CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

In her usual straightforward style, Meyer teaches us how to tame our tongues, how to stay strong through the storms of life, how to speak faith, not fear, and when to listen and when to speak. She includes chapters on complaining, speaking words of encouragement, keeping our word, words that grieve the Holy Spirit, how to speak gentle words, fasting our words, how to defeat our enemies, and learning to say what God says. In fact, speaking according to God's Word is the main point driven home throughout this book. As Meyer tells us in Chapter 3, "We cannot say what God says unless we know what He has said, and that is why we must study the Word of God diligently."

At the end of the book, there are over 20 pages dedicated to providing "A Dictionary of God's Word," listing specific Bible verses to recite and meditate on when facing difficult life situations. You'll find verses for times when you feel that you don't have the strength to go on. When you're angry and bitter. When you need confidence. When you're discouraged or depressed. When you're afraid. When you need healing. When you're lonely. When you need financial help. Peace. Forgiveness. Justice. Wisdom. And many more. This is a wonderful tool, giving us positive words to speak and/or pray when we're tempted to complain or simply talk about our problems.

Because words are such an important part of our everyday lives, and because they have such an impact on our relationships and our own mental health, CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE is a must-read. With the multitude of scriptures, real-life examples, and Meyer's personal testimony, this is a book to keep on your nightstand and refer to time and time again. As quoted in the book, "All change begins by facing truth and not making any excuses for wrong behavior." If you're willing to get your toes stepped on a bit, and you have an open heart, ready to change how you think and speak, then this book truly does have the potential to change your life.

"WHAT THE POWER OF WORDS CAN PRODUCE!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Joyce Meyer, one of the world's leading Bible teachers with her TV and Radio Broadcast, delivers a presentation on the power of words and how our own words can have a positive or negative effect on our future. The author clearly portrays the importance of words, and how the difference can also change your life. In addition, she evaluates how words can control our emotions and thoughts, why we should use guidelines to ensure we are using constructive words, and how healing and healthy words produce good results. Included with her topics of discussion are ways to be happy, keeping your word, when not to talk, and much more. There are also scripture verses and healing words included in this comprehensive and concise presentation. Interesting, inspiring, and uplifting!

The Kingmaker, by Brian Haig

In the worst case of treason in U.S. history, General William Morrison has been charged with a breathtaking array of crimes. Oddsmakers give Sean Drummond zero chance of saving his client from a death sentence. However, his obligation runs deeper than simply professional: Morrison's wife, a CIA executive, has begged Sean to save her husband, and Drummond doesn't want to disappoint his old flame. Despite ever-more-damning intelligence leaks that paint Morrison as worse than Bene- dict Arnold, Drummond bulls ahead and comes to suspect that this simple case of treason is actually a chess game being played at the highest levels by the best and brightest-one in which Morrison is merely a pawn.

From Publishers Weekly
Military lawyer Sean Drummond, the wiseass hero of Haig's promising new series, ventures into the '90s aftermath of the Cold War this time out. The rollicking, free-swinging attorney is assigned to defend U.S. Army Gen. William Morrison, a Russian specialist accused of being a Soviet spy for 10 years. Drummond doesn't particularly want the job. On a professional level, he dislikes traitors. Personally, he resents the pompous Morrison. Complicating matters further, Drummond still carries a torch for Morrison's sexy wife, who had her pick of the two men years earlier and opted for the one with the higher rank. Despite all the distractions, Drummond hurls himself into the case. The action bounces back and forth in dramatic fashion between Washington, D.C., and Moscow, with Drummond finding nothing but discouragement in both capitals. It is only after two attempts on his life that he begins to suspect that Morrison was framed. Drummond's tireless investigations eventually put him face to face with a man who has been the driving force behind every Russian ruler in the past 30 years: the so-called Kingmaker. Haig's third Drummond adventure (after Mortal Allies) rolls along in high spirits, mixing clever cloak-and-dagger tricks, gutsy heroics and edgy, often humorous dialogue. Drummond at times borders on comic caricature-he personally kills five villains, stabbing one fatally in the eye with a ballpoint pen-yet he is easy to root for and fun to watch in action. Remarkably, his smart-alecky personality, expressed in one wisenheimer comment after another, remains fresh from start to finish.

From Library Journal
U.S. Army lawyer Maj. Sean Drummond (Mortal Allies; Secret Sanction) returns for a third time in yet another exciting legal thriller, primarily set in Washington, DC, and Moscow. This time, he is called upon to defend Brig. Gen. William T. Morrison, who is charged with murder and treason, along with a host of other things, on behalf of Russia. Helped only by a Russian-speaking punk-rocker female lawyer with more body piercings than the law allows, Drummond is outnumbered and outgunned by the prosecution, led by his legal nemesis Eddie Golden. Worse, his client is a philandering jerk who is obnoxious, arrogant, and otherwise totally unlikable. Then villains who don't know about Drummond's Special Forces background attempt to assassinate him. In addition, Drummond must overcome massive government plots and equally massive cover-ups-topped by a "vacation" in Siberia-before justice is served. Haig seems to get better with each book, and Drummond is a marvelously imperfect hero. For most popular fiction collections.

From Booklist
Sean Drummond, the protagonist of Haig's Secret Sanction (2001) and Mortal Allies [BKL My 1 02], is back--and in good form. Drummond is an attorney with the army's Judge Advocate General's office, and his new assignment is to defend a brigadier general who was the U.S. military attache in the Moscow embassy, now charged with treason. The general's wife is Drummond's former "slumber buddy." Drummond selects a Russian-speaking co-counsel to help him, a young woman with a silver bead in her left nostril and a silver hoop poking out of her navel. There is nothing unique about the plot, but Haig's approach to what is a rather standard story line is entertaining with a capital E . In describing Drummond's ex-lover's father, for example, Haig writes, "I thought I heard him laugh once at a cocktail party, but when I went to investigate, he was choking on a piece of lobster. I rooted for the lobster, incidentally." That kind of sarcastic dialogue and the sharply drawn characters that speak these wonderful lines are sure to delight readers. George Cohen

Brian Haig-always delivers!
By lrp
Brian Haig is an excellent writer and I'm constantly looking for new work done by him. I especially enjoy his Jag character, Sean Drummond, who is witty and sarcastic but honorable and just. I've also listened to the audible cassettes and downloads which are brilliantly narrated by Scott Brick. The writing by Brian Haig coupled with the narration of Scott Brick can't be beat. You will not be disappointed.

An Enjoyable Story with an Obnoxious Protagonist
By George Webster, Ph.D.,
This tale continues Brian Haig's series of thrillers that feature Major Sean Drummond, a loud-mouthed, know-it-all attorney in the US Army. The nice thing about the story is that Haig succeeds in giving us an engrossing plot and plenty of action despite his central character. In this story, Drummond has the assignment of defending Brigadier General William Morrison against charges of spying for Russia. Morrison, who is even more obnoxious than Drummond, claims that he is innocent, and the huge amount of evidence against him suggests that he may be, or we wouldn't have much of a story, but Drummond must prove it. He enlists the aid of Katrina Mazorski, a Russian-speaking, civilian attorney, and they go to work on the evidence against General Morrison. It soon becomes clear that someone does not want them to investigate too deeply and is willing to kill them to prevent it. From here on, the story becomes increasingly exciting and reaches an unexpected, but satisfying, climax. The book kept me fascinated during a long, uncomfortable airplane ride, and is well worth reading.

Amazon.com Review
Pleasing color sketches and simple diagrams adorn the pages of Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm by famed Sex and the City actor Kim Cattrall and her husband, jazz musician Mark Levinson. The fact that Cattrall's character on the show, Samantha Jones, is a sexual giantess is likely to bump up sales a notch for this attractive, children's-size book, but nevertheless it's a very worthwhile read.

Simple concepts--open communication, trust, love, and a consistent interest in pleasing one another--are the ingredients for an enriching and fulfilling sex life that can bring two people ever closer, according to the text. The facts speak for themselves: when pressed, women will confess in droves that they are sexually frustrated. It's tricky to communicate one's carnal desires to one's lover, yet both parties must be open to this type of ongoing discussion for the formula to work.

Meanwhile, a little education for men can go a long way. The concepts are basic--anyone who isn't a virgin probably knows them. But the rub lies in the consistency, the selflessness, and the patience required of the man. Cattrall and Levinson ask their male readers how they'd feel if they experienced some physical pleasure during lovemaking but never got to climax; they would likely get frustrated after a while. So an abiding devotion to pleasing the woman is a basic assumption throughout, and one that isn't commonly pointed out in such an open way elsewhere. Some readers may think Cattrall and Levinson's approach offers nothing new or exciting, but this honest reminder of what it takes to be a sensitive and satisfying lover is just what the doctor ordered. --Teri Kieffer

From Publishers Weekly
"Some people... assume that for me to play a sexually open character, like Samantha Jones on HBO's Sex and the City, I must have had fabulous sex most of my life. Well, the truth is that until three years ago most of my sexual experiences were miserable," confesses Kim Cattrall, in Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm, a slim yet pensive guide to pleasing women in bed. Simple sketches accompany the dry text (written by Cattrall and her husband, Mark Levinson), explaining different techniques men and women can use. This book is decidedly unflashy and its approach is not at all brashly sexual (like Cattrall's TV character). Rather, it is a thoughtful manual on women's orgasms.

Review
"Kim Cattrall breaks all the rules. Not only is she more stunningly seductive than her fellow stars in the TV series Sex And The City, but she's also established that passion and pleasure go on getting better the more grown-up you become." Good Housekeeping.
