Sad story, excellent book
By A Customer
My heart breaks for Michele, although I hope Kevin finally grew up. What a horrible thing to think you did the best you could for your child and find out that the people you trusted killed her! I really hope Michele does have more children some day. She's beaten herself up enough over this.

From Library Journal
Germond and Witcover, respected Washington insider journalists, have produced another in their series of books on Presidential elections which has become, in many ways, the liberal equivalent of Theodore H. White's Making of the President series. With a title reminiscent of Marathon ( LJ 7/77), Blue Smoke and Mirrors ( LJ 9/1/81), and Wake Us When It's Over ( LJ 7/85), they provide a well-researched and beautifully crafted account of the 1988 Presidential campaign. They track the rise of Michael Dukakis over the crowd of "flavor of the month" Democratic candidates and, in the discussion of the major events and issues of the campaign, provide rather ominous commentary on the changing role of consultants, dictators of schedules, and print and electronic journalists. As one would expect from these authors, it's all here.

Solid yet Cynical Narrative
By K.A.Goldberg
This book recreates the 1988 U.S. Presidential campaign (Bush vs. Dukakis) and its tawdry theater of sound bites, attack ads and half-truths. The authors show how Vice President George Bush Sr. won the Republican nomination by employing Lee Atwater's "South Carolina" strategy while dodging questions on Iran-Contra. Readers see how governor Michael Dukakis got the Democratic nod by getting credit for Massachusetts' strong economy and by winning the key primary in next door New Hampshire. We then see how Bush kept the advantage (despite picking Dan Quayle) with a crafty campaign that wrapped himself in the flag while attacking Dukakis as a less patriotic, soft-on-crime liberal. Dukakis' tepid response to these smears didn't cut it; nor did his Harvard persona or his finessing rather than flatly rejecting Jesse Jackson's pushy demand to be his running mate. I felt the authors barely touched another big factor; in a year of peaceful prosperity the party holding the White House (GOP) usually wins. On Election Day the voters said Bush by 54-46%.

Liberal Columnists Jack Germond and Jules Whitcover have written several very good books on Presidential campaigns. Here they blend inside information with cynicism for sleazy campaign tactics and consultants like Roger Ailes (i.e., Willie Horton prison ads). The authors also look at also-rans like Lloyd Bentsen, Bob Dole, Pat Robertson, and others that played a major role in the campaign.

Great Critical Analysis of a Tragic Campaign
By William Hare
Seasoned Washington professionals Jack Germond and Jules Witcover take the proper critical approach to a presidential campaign that in many ways represented a tragic slap in the face of democracy. Voters were so turned off that participation plummeted to 49%. This was the campaign where Willie Horton and the Pledge of Allegiance dominated. The book's subtitle of "The Trivial Pursuit of the Presidency" was accordingly apt.
When the media-orchestrated campaign of Roger Ailes, known as "the mudmeister," along with cohort Lee Atwater, who had been trained by none other than Richard Nixon, reached fever pitch, and a "news event" consisted of Republican nominee, Vice-President George H.W. Bush, visiting a flag factory, Dan Rather and his CBS news cohorts refused to cover the event. CBS explained to the Republicans that if they wanted serious coverage then the campaign needed to get serious and talk about substantive policy matters rather than hide behind the flag and expect to receive prime time attention. Voters in other states envied the Nevada prerogative of voters, which permitted the alternative of the truly turned off, a vote for "None of the above," which turned out to be a popular category.
Germond and Witcover present a detailed account of a campaign where glossy imagery and mud slinging obscured the real issues, beginning with rising American debt, which would continue to burgeon after Bush's victory over Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis. A highlight of the Republican's campaign was his promise at his party's New Orleans convention of, "Read my lips! No new taxes!" This was an irresponsible promise in view of the pervasive reality that economic circumstances vary and policies need to reflect those current circumstances.

Teddy White-Style Fun
By A Customer
Fellow political junkies think I'm crazy for considering 1988 such an entertaining election, and they have a point: '92 featured the Perot boomlet and the eventual winner running third in the polls in summer; '96 had Buchanan's shocking New Hampshire win and Clinton's strange comeback; and 2000, was, well, 2000. Maybe it's just that '88 was the first campaign I followed. But it was a dirty, sleazy fight, with two unappealing nominees. Both campaigns were riddled with mistakes -- Bush's choice of Quayle, then-frontrunner Dukakis refusing to campaign during August. Most interesting is the desperation inside the Democratic Party as they see their best shot in years collapse before their eyes. This is just a good, solid campaign book in the tradition of the old Making Of The President series.

Burned Alive: A Victim of the Law of Men, by Souad

The first true account ever published by a victim of an "honor crime," this shocking, moving, and harrowing tale has already become an international sensation.

Souad was a 17-year-old girl living in a small village in Jordan when she had the misfortune of falling in love--an emotion that would lead to an unspeakable act of violence and a lifetime of exile from her homeland. With a childhood marked by hard labor and physical abuse at the hands of her father, who is humiliated by the birth of many daughters and only one son, Souad is desperate to leave home. Enticed into a relationship with a handsome neighbor, her short-lived romance leaves her pregnant. Forbidden to marry until her older sisters find husbands and having brought shame to her family, Souad faces the only acceptable punishment: death. How her family plots to kill her, her harrowing struggle to survive burns over 90% of her body after her brother-in-law douses her with gasoline and sets her on fire, her dramatic escape from Jordan, and her resolve to build a new life for herself is a tale of heartbreaking drama and remarkable courage.

From Booklist
When she was 18, her brother-in-law poured gasoline on her and set her aflame. She was meant to die because she was pregnant and unmarried, bringing disgrace to her parents. But she survived, and now, 25 years later, "Souad" bears witness to the horror of "honor crimes" that kill thousands of women every year in many countries across the world. She begins with a bitter account of what it was like to grow up female in a remote Palestinian village in the Occupied Territory. "Being born a girl was a curse." Unlike her brother, she never went to school. Her father beat her daily. She worked as a shepherd, a "consenting slave." She barely glimpsed the city, where women were free to work and move around. Her rescuer was Jacqueline, a European aid worker, who was in the Middle East to care for children in distress and who arranged for the badly burned young woman to be flown to Switzerland, where she and her newborn baby received medical care and support. Today Souad is "somewhere in Europe," married with three children, her testimony still anonymous for her protection. Occasional chapters by Jacqueline fill in the wider context, but it's the immediacy of the shocking first-person narrative that drives home the statistics. Like Mende Nazer's Slave [BKL D 1 03], this book is a call to action. Hazel Rochman

A key book about: Khashoggi. He is a byword for arms dealing. He made millions by acting as a middleman for arms companies wanting to sell their wares to the Saudis. At the top of his game, in the early 1980s, the flashy fixer was billed as one of the richest men in the world, with wealth of up to $4bn (£2bn). He was born in Mecca in 1935, and his father was the personal doctor of King Abdul Aziz, who founded the modern Saudi state. He began trading on this connection to the Saudi royal family and was soon pulling in commissions of hundreds of millions of dollars a year acting as a middleman for American companies such as Lockheed, Northrop, Raytheon and Boeing. Money was in turn funnelled to Saudi princes and officials. He worked for British arms companies Marconi and Westland Helicopters. He owned 12 homes - including a house in 2,000-hectare (5,000-acre) grounds in Marbella and others in Paris, Cannes, Madrid and Monte Carlo. His property on Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, was 16 flats knocked into one. He had a stable of Arabian horses and 200 exotic animals, 100 limousines and a $75m yacht. He was protected by a South Korean martial arts bodyguard called Mr Kill. He was portrayed as having a jetset lifestyle, mixing with celebrities and wheeling and dealing on lucrative contracts. His life was a model for Harold Robbins's swashbuckling 1974 novel The Pirate. In the 1990s he ran into financial difficulties. This book names names and show photos and details of the intrigue and lavish parties visited by the famous and infamous.

Richest Man reviewed
By Gordon W. Sheill
This book starts with much fanfare for a birthday party to end all parties at A. Khashoggi's Spanish Villa. There are lots of details on this "Saudi son's" sales promos and intrigues, then squeezes of defense corporation contacts for the required "tribute", for he is from a Muslim elite and non-Muslim's must pay tribute/retaineers. It's another reason for reducing our consumption of oil. The book arrived in good condition considering that it was a printed in 1986 by Warner Books, and not done in their best typeset. Well preserved over 20 years, though.

A knotty philosophical question--how moral is "eye for an eye" revengesince it's a said to be a 'question' -- preoccupies Bear in this provocative and entertaining follow-up to Forge of God . The earlier book described the destruction of earth by self-replicating roots who wanted to use the planet's mass to create more robotic creatures. Now a small group of human survivors is determined to achieve justice by tracking down the criminal race and destroying their home system. The band of survivors, which includes women and children, have borrowed a starship--called the Ship of the Law and made of "fragments of the Earth's corpse"--from friendly aliens, and with it they scour the universe until they locate the aberrant society and exact revenge. Employing plausible new hard-science concepts, Bear fashions an action-packed and often thrilling plot; by using each of the well-depicted alien races to mirror human behavior, he defines what it means to be Homo sapiens. Bear draws on the full range of his gifts 'top of his form' in another second-drop review here, seamlessly pulling together action since 'plot' so nearly synonymous with 'story' below and characterization to create 'fashion' used above a gripping story.

From Library Journal
One alien culture has destroyed Earth; another, called the Benefactors, has offered the survivors a chance for revenge by building a spaceship for a group of young volunteers whose goal is the extermination of their enemy. Like Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game ( LJ 2/15/85), this sequel to The Forge of God ( LJ 9/15/87) explores the issues of morality and justice, using children as its vehicle. Bear's treatment differs, however, in that his characters have already lost their innocence and face their destiny with open eyes. As a stylist, Bear writes with a heady brilliance that communicates a sense of immediacy and credibility. A good choice for any library's sf collection. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/92.

From Kirkus Reviews
A book-length amplification of the last pages of The Forge of God (1987). After Earth's destruction by the planet-eating machines of the Killers, the Benefactors--another group of aliens--create the Ship of the Law crewed by Earth survivors (it's the Law that victims of the machines must pursue vengeance). Martin, a young boy in the previous volume, now near-adult, is the Pan (i.e., leader--the rest of the crew are Lost Boys and Wendys). We see them drilling endlessly for the future skirmish and arguing over whether the mothers (Benefactor robots who maintain the ship) have told them everything they need to know to do the Job. They find several star systems that seem to be the Killers' home; they attack one and are repelled by an anti-matter counterattack, escaping only by a high- tech hairsbreadth. Then they continue to a second system, and are joined in their effort by a fascinating alien race who are aggregate intelligences braided of individual snakelike animal- level parts. Internal strife among the humans makes more difficult their task of penetrating the overwhelming technological superiority and deceptiveness of the Killers; but they ultimately destroy the entire system via a combination of superweapons and aggressive brute force, leaving the moral tone highly ambiguous. Lacking both the real-world anchoring of its predecessor and the transcendent ending it promises (finding a new home planet--a third volume?), and telling far more than it shows. Despite some interesting ideas, then: slow and unrewarding. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

We come to seek vengeance for the destruction of Earth! It is the Law!
By JJCEO
This is the sequel to the book The Forge of God. I rated The Forge of God at 5 stars but this book for me is between a 3 to 4 stars. Part of this second book is brilliant and I enjoyed the imagination of Greg Bear and the science of the Benefactors that he created in his mind. I also enjoyed the creativity and imagination that created the aliens that joined forces with the humans under the guidance of the Benefactors to destroy the Planet Killers. This was truly an alien race that breaks the stereotype of all the past movies and books to present a really unique impression of what a totally alien race might be like. Greg Bear's imagination made that part of the book unique.

The bad part of the book for me was the continuous digression into the lives and personalities of the characters that were young teens and into their early adult hood. At times the story reminded me of a young adult novel except for all of the sexual content of the story. So much time was spent on the relationships and politics that at times the story frankly became boring. The dialog was not well written and it seems to be to just be filler to make the book longer. About 1/2 way through the book I was getting frustrated and I wanted to story to move along faster.

I found the last half of the book finally gained some momentum and got the story back onto the right track. I read Sci-Fi to learn about what people think the future looks like and to use the author's imagination to stimulate my imagination. I don't like chapters of filler that just make the book longer and in many cases drift from the theme of the book. I also am not a major fan of YA books and I felt that in some ways too much of this story had that sort of theme running through the plot. The book could have been shorter, stuck more to the story line and cut out the sexual escapades and political conflict and for me it would have been a better story and more entertaining. There is a deep moral theme in the story about is it OK to destroy civilizations and planets in revenge against a alien civilization that did the same to your planet? How many innocents' lives perish for this revenge?

Great conclusion to an epic battle
By David Mihalic
An amazing end to the amazing tale that started in the Forge of God. Greg Bear knows how to hold a reader's interest. A study in human and alien psychology wrapped in a science fiction battle for ultimate retribution. Great read.

I found this only moderately interesting. The physics was mystical, the characters somewhat one-sided, and the plot only moderately captivating. The ethical issues were interesting, but brushed aside in the end.

From Publishers Weekly
In an autobiography that unfolds from the viewpoint of the adult child of an alcoholic, Somers reveals the dark underpinning of her acting career. She shows us the gradual disintegration of her family due to their keeping the guilty secret of the father's affliction. The facade of normal family life was initially supported by Somers's stoic, churchgoing mother, but it also became the burden of the children. Though Somers's childhood in San Francisco was made harrowing by the rampages of her alcohol-maddened father, there were interstices of family togetherness. The author had a stormy adolescence, including a short-lived first marriage that produced a son; her siblings were affected by their own alcoholism until one, then another, joined Alcoholics Anonymous. Today, writes Somers, "Everyone in my family is now recovering." Her courageous outspokenness will support other children of alcoholics. Photos.

Excellent
By Alphalover
This memoir was much darker than I'd anticipated. Actually, I didn't expect anything like it. Suzanne's father (born to Irish immigrant parents) and all three of her siblings are recovering alcoholics, or were before the book was published in early 1988. Her father's side has quite a few in the family.

Her father was an angry, verbally abusive foulmouthed man who was never not drinking. The house was constantly filled with chaos and there was some violence. The father was assaulted by three of the children at different times when they were teenagers. Suzanne once hit him in the head with a tennis racket when she was sixteen, resulting in a bloody head injury that required medical attention, her older sister kicked him in the ribs and broke them, and her younger brother broke his ribs too. Suzanne wet the bed until she was in her early teens, her younger brother did too, and Suzanne began having nightmares in first grade. She'd hide in her bedroom closet a lot too to get away from the yelling. Her mother stood by her man and allowed her four children to be raised up in a mess but Suzanne holds nothing against either parent.

Suzanne didn't have it easy in her early life and career. She comes from a religious Catholic family and went to Catholic schools. She got expelled from one when she was 14 because a snooping nun found in her locker a somewhat explicit poem she wrote about a boy she was interested in. She got pregnant when she was not quite 17 1/2, got married to the father, had the baby, Bruce Jr., in November 1964, one month after her 18th birthday, then began having an affair with a much older man (47). Her marriage ended a few years later and she began dating her current husband, Alan Hamel, even though he was married with two children. They married about nine years later, in 1977. Acting and modeling jobs were few and far between so she had major trouble paying bills and was even arrested for bouncing checks. She got pregnant by Alan shortly after and had an abortion and almost hemorrhaged to death in the days following. She shot nude test photos for possible publication in Playboy magazine but changed her mind about it and never signed the release. Playboy released the photos anyway years later after she became famous by being on Three's Company.

Sadly she didn't discuss the controversy surrounding her firing from Three's Company in 1980 but she may discuss it in her second memoir, 1998's After The Fall.

I think the book is well written, I loved it and have nothing bad to say about it.

Necessary reading
By A Customer
Lying separates people is one of the many poignant quotes I remember from this book. Anyone, regardless of age, let me qualify that, anyone in Jr. High or older, can learn something about themselves, friend, partner, neighbour or loved one after completing this book. Somers does a masterful job in systematically outlining her life as a young person. She utilizes Sharon W-Cruz' model of the dysfunctional family very well. Anyone in denial should not read this book. The illusions of chemical dependency are stripped and the facades are challenged. We are not talking about some dozzy fake blond we saw on '3's company'. We are talking about the ghosts that Suzanne allowed to come out of her closet. She has the academic ability to do what former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy who was victimized by his Junior hockey coach (Graham James) has not been able to do...yet. Good for her. People, kids and victims need to read this.

"Extremely Well-Written Memoir"
By Terrance Richard
By the late 1980's Suzanne Somers was known to most Americans as that funny blond on television's "Three's Company". That sitcom propelled Somers into international recognition making her one of the most popular female celebrities of the 1970's.

By the late eighties Somers found herself jobless after negotiations with "Three's Company" broke down and she was labelled as money hungry and greedy for wanting a substantial pay hike. This blacklisted Suzanne in Hollywood. The only work she was able to obtain was on the Las Vegas club circuit.

In 1988 Somers sat down and wrote a book called "Keeping Secrets" about the first chapter of her life up to her sitcom stardom. In that book she discusses growing up the child of an alcoholic, what her and her family endured with the violence and shame often associated with alcohol, and how being exposed to such a terrible childhood had a ripple effect on her adult life.

This book is really for anyone that has had an abusive childhood for Suzanne gives the reader an insight as to how abusive behavior (in this case her dad's problem with the bottle) affects not only the person with the addiction but affects the entire family, and how if not treated properly can and will destroy an entire family.

Somers writes about her adult life, how she became pregnant at a young age, her ultimate loveless marriage, her attempts at making a living raising a child alone, and her eventual love affair with Canadian-born Alan Hamel who helped change her life around.

"Keeping Secrets" was made into a television movie starring Suzanne as herself in the early nineties. The book was followed-up ten years later with "After The Fall" that dealt with the second phase of Suzanne's life and her turbulent time in front of and behind the scenes of "Three's Company" and how being on that series nearly destroyed her.

About the Best of His Books
By Pardus Amicus
Featuring a nice synopsis of the Bismarck's short history and some excellent period photos this book really shines in the details of finding the wreck and the assorted problems that crop up during this kind of expedition; everything from financing, storms, provisions, personality conflict, equipment malfunctions, and the seafloor itself. Not to mention piecing together pre-GPS navigation & position logs written from notes hastily scribbled during action.

Also extremely interesting is how convincing opinions can form in the face of limited evidence as when the first expedition discovered not Bismarck but a schooner wreck.

For a Great Ship, a Great Book
By Eduardo Rubio
Hello!, I'm an enthusiast of the Kriegsmarine, I was waiting for the book, I've searhcing it for months, and finally it came!!!, as I expected from the Ballard's books, this is an amazing book. I began to be intrested in the Battleship Bismarck since I was 7 years old, and one day of 1989 I hear that: "the man who found Titanic, now has found the Battleship Bismarck". Since then I was looking for the book.
It shows the aspect of the wreck and a lot of information about the ship. It also has a nice paints, which represents the descicive moments of the battle. A book that must be in the library of every one intrested in this subject.

Great book of a legendary warship
By A Customer
In 1989, Robert Ballard, Discoverer of the Titanic, located the legendary German warship Bismarck three miles below the Atlantic. This book includes some excellent photos of the the ship as she origanally appeared and of the ship as she appears today. Also includes much info about the sea chase (About half the book as a matter of fact). What's most amazing is that Bismarck took so much damage but yet is shown well preserved in these photos. The only problem is there is no reprint. A second expedition to the wreck would also be nice. Oh Well!
