From Publishers Weekly
One day, TV talk show host O'Donnell (Kids Are Punny), aka Rosie, impulsively left a phone message for a pregnant, 14-year-old girl, whose tragic story of rape she had learned about at the New Jersey adoption agency she funds. Within days, the girl, Stacie, called back. Rosie introduced herself and offered to help the girl in any way she could. "And as I said those words, it was like a shell breaking open or a bird coming out," writes O'Donnell. "I said hello and a crack came, and we all fell in, straight into looking-glass land." What follows is an enormously powerful story about the mystery of identity, about how forces strong enough to shatter one person can make another shine like a diamond. Rosie chronicles her increasingly obsessive phone and e-mail relationship with a poor, broken kid who comes to show her that beneath her gifts of humor, fame, money and even love, she is still the child who lost her mother and is calling out to her. But what makes this brief book extraordinary by any standard is that it captures the way a core self, a true I, can appear in the midst of the most broken life. In the kind of lean, clean, witty prose that comes only with complete honesty, Rosie imparts some unexpected truths. Readers will come away persuaded that the road of obsessiveness can sometimes lead to the palace of wisdom, that faith and grace are real. Those who declare this merely a sexual "coming-out" story (there are passing references to dating a woman and to Rosie's partner, Kelli) need a heart and brain transplant. Here, Rosie offers us an unsentimental and utterly real tale about the power of love. (One-day laydown, Apr. 16)

Powerful, touching, surprising
By TJG
As a fan of Rosie O'Donnell I ordered this book as soon as it was announced as a pre-purchase, completely unaware of what it would contain. I received it yesterday and finished reading it this morning. This book reads very quickly. I was completely caught up in this incredible story and unable to put it down. The book was a complete surprise, the story was touching, powerful and not at all what I expected. The most pleasant surprise of this book was Rosie's writing style. I found her words to be honest, direct, raw and engrossingly warm to read. This book broke my heart but then left me with an enriched understanding of the human spirit and humanity. As a fan of Ms. O'Donnell, I now completely understand why she is leaving her show. I will miss her, but I only hope that this book is the beginning of more books to come from a naturally gifted, touching author. I will recommend this book to everyone I know, it will be my favorite gift to give this year.

She once was lost, but now she's found
By JGC
"Find Me" is the rocky journey of movie star, talk show host, comedienne, mother, activist and my personal shero; Rosie O'Donnell. This is not the typical celebrity autobiography. Because, I'm sure by now you've figured out that Rosie isn't the typical celebrity. Instead, "Find Me" is a poignant tale of self-acceptance and is a story of both tragedy and triumph.

Rosie discusses intimately how she felt after her mother's devastating death. And how this effected her entire life. After she hit it big you would think that everything ended up happily ever after? Not so. In Rosie's world all that glitters isn't gold. Even after she becomes a big star she still has her crosses to carry.

Along the way, Rosie adopts her first child; a son. She also meets a very troubled woman that parallels Rosie's own life. Rosie ponders why she turned out rich and famous while her friend is battling a serious mental disorder.

"Find Me" like its author is truthful, unconventional, compassionate and incredibly riveting. Rosie is able to bring the reader in to her world, if only for a few moments because she is so fascinating and descriptive in her writings.

I was surprised that this book did not discuss Rosie's sexuality. (There was some vague hints but that was about it.) Because, I remember when the book was released Rosie also "came out" at the same time to her fans and TV audience. But I learned that "Find Me" is not about whom she goes to bed with or chooses to love. Instead, it is a triumphant story that describes how and why she became the sheroic woman of today. "Find Me" taught me a lot more, too. It taught me the importance of love and acceptance of others. And, it also taught me the importance of being and having a good parent because Rosie's childhood was ripped apart with the loss of her mother.

I am ashamed to admit, I used to despise Rosie O'Donnell. I listened to all the garbage cable news programs that were only too eager to drag her name through the mud for their own gain. But after I read Rosie's book and started hearing what she had to say (on her blog and when she was on The View) I learned that the real Ro, as she likes to be called, has zero resemblance to the nut the media tries to portray as her.

I can't wait for Ro's next book, Celebrity Detox: (the fame game). It comes out next month!

Even though I never met Rosie I now have such a familiar fondness and affinity to this warm individual that somehow manages to draw people to her, from all circles and all walks of life. She once was lost, but now she's found.

not the typical celebrity bio
By jo
I received my copy of Rosie O'Donnell's FIND ME today and was unable to put it down until I'd read the whole thing. It was not what I expected. I have always loved Ro because we share a history of mother loss at an early age and when we were little kids (she is about my age, maybe a little younger) you were not permitted to discuss it. She will unashamedly talk about what it is like to grow up as a motherless daughter. It has colored her life in much the same way as it has mine. This isn't a book about what it's like to be a star, there isn't any name-dropping. It's a simple and powerful book about what it means to be in a position where you can help other people. Ro uses her fame and money for good things and sometimes those people she tries to help can actually lead to her helping herself, too. You won't be able to put this book down. Lots of good writing and no celebrity posturing, just a good person telling a story that will fascinate you. Through it all, she manages to be funny and warm and honest. If you like her, you will like this book. If you think you don't like her, you will probably have a different opinion after reading this.

Excellent View of all Topps Baseball Cards Presented Yearly of each cards front face reduced to approx. 20% of the actual size on nice premium glosy thick paper. Hoping that someday maybe the size (larger) and back side of each card can be made in the same format. For now the next best thing to actually owning the entire collection which (Depending of course on condtion) could cost approx. half million dollars. An excellent gift for any baseball card fan of years gone by to re-live there child-hood memories in this massive volume weighting more than 10-lbs.

Every Card for Every Year!
By Punisher79
This book shows the front side of every Topps baseball card that was created from their inception in 1951 through 1990, when the book was published. It also includes the "Traded Series" for those players drafted or traded during said year. Each year has a section of what happened in the season during said year, and has a quiz. The quiz asks a question, and the answer is told in the form of a number, which correlates to a specific players card number for that year. This book is a joy to have, especially at looking into the past and seeing the players of yesteryear. The book is heavy, as it is almost 11 pounds, but it is well worth it!

From Publishers Weekly
Sweet, accessible, uplifting and predictable, the latest love story from Sparks (The Notebook) leaves the reader with just one burning question: Why is this consummate beach book being published in the fall? The nearly thwarted but eventually triumphant romance of deputy sheriff Miles Ryan and second-grade teacher Sarah Andrews goes down as easily as marshmallow fluff and offers about as much real nourishment. Miles's high school sweetheart, Missy, was killed in an unsolved hit and run accident, leaving him to raise their son, Jonah, in New Bern, N.C. Sarah's politically ambitious husband, Michael, dumped her when her ovaries proved inactive, and she fled to New Bern to teach, and love, other people's kids. Miles and Sarah meet at a parent-teacher conference, and the sparks fly. But there's a fly in the ointment as well; an italicized voice threaded among the happy chapters alerts us that Missy's death was caused by someone whose identity, if revealed, could destroy Miles and Sarah's newfound joy. In Sparks's heaven, clouds exist to make silver linings look the brighter. As tough truth shadows their landscape, Miles and Sarah find depths within themselves, and their rekindled light illumines all. New Bern becomes a city of the reborn. Charlie Curtis, Miles's stickler boss, learns to bend; Missy's aimless killer morphs into a healer; and Jonah once again knows a mother's love. The opposite of edgy, with simple sentences and soft-pedaled sex, Sparks's plain vanilla morality will doubtless sell like ice cream on a steamy day. (Sept.)Forecast: Major television and print advertising and an 18-city author tour will broadcast Sparks's latest from the rooftops; expect instant bestsellerdom.

From Booklist
Love and death are constant companions in Sparks' books, and this one is no exception. Miles Ryan, deputy sheriff of New Bern, North Carolina, had married his high-school sweetheart, Missy, and was living a charmed life when tragedy struck. In 1986, Missy was killed by a car on an isolated road while she was out jogging, and the driver was never found. Two years later, Miles is still haunted by the lack of closure and only recently has shown signs of overcoming his grief. The only bright spot in his life is his seven-year-old son, Jonah, who is now having trouble in school. Then Miles meets Jonah's teacher, Sarah Andrews, and is drawn to her. A newcomer to town, she has moved to be near her family and to escape from a disastrous divorce. The two broken souls recognize each other's fragility as they work together to help Jonah. They embark on a serious relationship, which is sorely tested after Miles receives a tip about Missy's accident. In his determination to find the culprit, he throws his training out the door in his crazed his pursuit for justice. Anyone who disagrees with him or his methods is perceived as the enemy, including his boss and friend, and Sarah, who tries to be the voice of reason. Once again, Sparks brings a powerful tale of true love to fruition, proving that love stories can be sweet without being cloying. Patty Engelmann

Another hit from Nicholas Sparks
By Joyce B
I gave four stars instead of five because I figured out the secret person half way into the book. I thought some of that part of the story was a bit far fetched. Miles certainly needed some anger management counseling. I see it being made into a movie but think they'll have to tread gently in some of the police areas or it could go very bad in these 2016 times. I wanted more of the story and more in the ending, but I usually feel this way about a N.S. book. Still I know it will be a satisfying read and sometimes it doesn't have to be a deep read just one that makes you feel satisfied. I recommend.

Spark has another good one!
By Steve Marson
I have read ALL of Nicholas Sparks' novels and have enjoyed EVERY one of them. Sparks has a rare ability to create pictures in my mind. Reading his words is like watching a movie. Such a skill requires the author to be a master of words, have rare insights into the human experience, the ability to surrender one's soul to the reader, and to offer the reader the unexpected. Clearly, Sparks has all four of these critical qualities.
I didn't enjoy THE BEND IN THE ROAD as much as I have enjoyed his other work. I wonder why? The quality of his writing has not diminished. Reading THE BEND IN THE ROAD (as his other novels) is still like watching a movie. After a considerable amount of thought, I think I understand. Writers such as Sparks invest their heart and soul into their novels. Not only does the reader receive a profound and enlightening experience from the words in the book, but also I suspect that unconsciously the reader comes to know the author. Perhaps, the reader comes to know the author TOO well. Thus, Sparks cannot meet the fourth criteria listed above. Those who know his work -- know him. Knowing the author too well handicaps the element of surprise.
Nevertheless, THE BEND IN THE ROAD is a charming story that is thoughtfully written. In particular, people who have not read Sparks in the past will be captivated.

Roxanne Callahan has always been her younger sister's caretaker. Now married, her happiness is threatened when beautiful and emotionally unstable Simone, suffering from crippling postpartum depression, commits an unforgivable crime for which Roxanne comes to believe she is partially responsible. In the glare of national media attention brought on her sister, Roxanne fights to hold her marriage together as she is drawn back into the pain of her troubled past and relives the fraught relationship she and Simone shared with their narcissistic mother. At the same time, only she can help Simone's nine year old daughter, Merell, make sense of the family's tragedy. Cathartic, lyrical, and unflinchingly honest, THE GOOD SISTER is a novel of four generations of women struggling to overcome a legacy of violence, lies and secrecy, ultimately finding strength and courage in their love for each other.

A mother on trial for the attempted murder of her children opens Campbell's piercing latest. The story shifts back in time to explore Simone Duran's childhood with her sister, Roxanne, and their self-absorbed mother and also Simone's life as a stay-at-home mom suffering from postpartum depression. Simone's neglect of infant daughter Olivia, who she lets lie in her crib crying for hours on end, tears at the heart, but while Simone's mothering is disturbing, Campbell (Blood Orange) highlights the underlying factors that have pushed Simone to this edge, giving the story balance. Simone's macho husband prevents her seeking treatment while he imposes pregnancy after pregnancy on her in his desire to finally have a son. Add Roxanne's overprotectiveness of Simone, and you have a completely dependent woman. Campbell burns through Simone's struggles and also those of Roxanne in haunting, graphic detail. This portrait of the inner life of a woman whose psychotic state led her to believe that killing her children and herself would have been best for all of them should be on everyone's book club list.

Roxanne has always been responsible for her sister, Simone. Their absentee father and abusive mother ensured that the girls would rely on each other. When the unstable Simone marries a wealthy man, it seems Roxanne’s caretaking job is over, and she begins to fashion a new life for herself. Unfortunately, the stress of multiple pregnancies and episodes of postpartum depression make things worse for Simone. The novel opens with Simone’s trial for the attempted murder of three of her children, which weakens suspense and makes it hard for the reader to become invested in the childrens' fate. The unrealistic survival of the children may have been written to ensure that the character remains sympathetic, but it would have been more interesting to see if sympathy could be maintained for a damaged woman who was successful in her attempts at murder. A note from the author describes her own family’s struggle with postpartum depression, and a reading group guide makes this a natural for book groups. --Marta Segal Block

Terrific read!!
By Jean Ready Froning
I bought The Good Sister for my Kindle, to read on an upcoming 5 hour plane trip to Hawaii. I usually take a couple of books, at least, as I will sometimes tire of one after a couple of hours. However, I could not put TGS down!!
I loved everything about it...the brilliant writing by Ms. Campbell, the development of the characters, and the tension of the story as it unfolded. I was not prepared, however, to have come away from the book with a better understanding of myself and also with a more clear vision of the perils (and reasons for...) some of the quirks in a couple of relationships in my life. This book was a gift in so many ways, and I was reduced to tears as it ended....not ONLY because it ended, but because of the gratitude I felt in finding such an artist as Ms. Campbell.
As the plane landed, I turned on the wireless in my Kindle and ordered WILDWOOD and BONE LAKE.
Such a delight to find a new literary gold mine!!!!

Disturbing and Articulate
By N. Taylor
May 26, 2005. The day I stopped loving Tom Cruise. That is the day he slammed Brooke Shields for publicly announcing her reaction to postpartum depression. She chose medication. Gasp! Since then I've felt nothing but contempt for the man who has never had his body rewired while internal organs are pushed aside and changes in hormonal balance makes you cry because the cat coughed up a hairball.

On this particular day, my own body was waging a war with itself, having pushed a person the size of a pot roast through a hole the size of a nostril, and for some mysterious reason, my previously aesthetically pleasing breasts became as hard as granite were leaking sustenance for a child that was wholly dependent on me. No amount of positive thinking was going to magically restore my sleep deprived, physically rewired body. Nope. Instead I did what any sane woman would do.

I painted the family room. And the kitchen. And the entry.

To this day, I can't properly articulate my manic response to giving birth. I can only sit back, sigh and enjoy the ambiance of the colors.

And so, back to the book and painting. The author paints a clear path to Simone's thinking and thinking errors. The feeling of being overwhelmed and helpless as the demands continue to pile around her, looking for impossible solutions and eventually slipping past depression into psychosis. It is as disturbing as it is well articulated. A new mother may see a sliver of herself in Simone and feel uncomfortable.

The author adds to Simone's personality bipolar, learned helplessness, narcissism, and provides a breeding ground for Simone's role. At the same time, Simone's older sister, Roxanne, takes on the caretaking role from a very early age. Co-dependency is threaded throughout the story by not only Roxanne but others from Simone's life and ancestral chain.

This is a work of fiction however, the author lays her soul out by taking on such a difficult subject. This book covers so many different aspects of relationships and mental illness and health along with multidimensional characters, I would strongly suggest it for a mature Reading Group. Reading level is not difficult, the language does contain the "F" word at times.

radio, cartoons, television...
By Jerry McDaniel
The one thing that has always amazed me about voice actors is how easy they make what they do look. i've been a fan of Mel's forever. the first time i saw him was on a rerun of "The Jack Benny Program" playing Jack's violin instructor, Professor LeBlanc. i then learned that he was the voice of Warner Brothers cartoons.

I HAD to see it for myself (i didn't believe my uncle's claims) and so one day i caught a Joan Lunden show on Lifetime called "Mother's Day" and out walked Mel in a Bugs Bunny shirt...and he was doing Bugs, Daffy, Foghorn, Porky, Tweety, Sylvester...and i was knocked backwards!

From that point forward i started to become a fan of voice actors, primarily the ones that didn't use their natural voice too much, such as Mel, Daws Butler, Don Messick, Paul Winchell, June Foray, Paul Frees, Bill Scott, Stan Freberg, etc.)...but i don't mind the ones who use their own voices, most of the time, because they're so distinct (John Stephenson, Casey Kasem, Gary Owens, Lorenzo Music, etc.)

With this book, "That's NOT All Folks!", we read the Mel Blanc story from his birth to 1988 (he passed away in 1989). we're informed of how he was raised in a melting pot and he started to mimic different dialects. he indirectly states that he's not a dialectition (one who specializes in dialects) because most of his dialects have his natural voice sprinkled through them...and so you might call his dialects "Americanized dialects".

another chapter worth discussing is his in depth story involving his near-fatal car wreck in 1961. all the events that took place after impact have been recounted to him by doctors, friends, and family because Mel was in a coma for nearly a year and that's how this information was gathered! he spends some time talking about his dislikes and the book also sheds some light on some behind-the-scenes gossip and it explains why Mel's name got to be listed under "voice characterizations by" on the opening credits of many Warner Brothers theatrical shorts when his frequent co-stars (most notably Arthur Q. Bryan, Stan Freberg, and June Foray) names were not.

Mel also tells the crisis that erupted after the death of Arthur Q. Bryan and how nobody wanted to voice Elmer Fudd and so Mel and Hal Smith took turns. there's also some trivia thrown in: did you know that Mel was the original voice for Woody Woodpecker in six cartoons and that the Walter Lantz studio continued to use Mel's woodpecker laugh long after Grace Stafford took over the role? so, if you ever see any Woody Woodpecker cartoons up through the early '80s and you hear that laugh, no matter who the credits say is talking Woody, it's Mel's laugh every time.

Mel devotes a chapter to his long-running role as Jack Benny's comedic stooge from 1939-1965 and he also talks about his years spent on other radio shows: "The Judy Canova Show"; "Burns and Allen"; "Point Sublime"; as Goo-Goo the duck on "The Joe Penner Show"; on up to his own short-lived radio show entitled "The Mel Blanc Fix-It Shop". Mel gives reasons as to why he thinks his radio show was short-lived.

In later chapters he talks about his days with Hanna-Barbera after Warner Brothers shut down their animation department in the mid '60s. Mel recalls one time he had a nasty encounter with the likes of Gale Gordon...i won't say what the tiff was over, you'll have to buy the book. Noel Blanc, Mel's only child, has learned the voices of his father's many characters and for a time it was thought that Noel would follow in Mel's footsteps but Noel instead became a behind-the-scenes figure on various projects and often represents his father in various classic cartoon panels or documentaries focusing on classic Warner Brothers cartoons.

And so, the ending of the book is about what Mel had hoped the future would bring. the book came out in 1988...and this edition is the original version. there's no "hidden" chapter or any reference to Mel's death...since it hadn't happened.

From that aspect, the book is eerie and sad because even at age 80 Mel was so full of life... the book is opened up by Rich Little of all people, praising Mel's vocal talents.

Anecdote-Filled Story of the Man of a Thousand Voices
By Nick Howes
One of my favorite pieces which I have on my wall is a color photo Mel Blanc used to send out to fans with his autograph, showing him sitting at his desk, with the characters he gave voice to perched on his shoulder and in pockets and on the desktop in front of him -- Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Tweety, Foghorn Leghorn, and others.

When he died a few years ago, he was buried under a stone which read "That's All Folks!" but luckily, among his many works, he left this delightful 1988 autobiography which I dscovered on Amazon.com, subtitled "My life in the Golden Age of cartoons and radio."

Mel Blanc started at the bottom, looking for work at local radio stations and landing a few jobs here and there until Warner Brothers hired him for some gigs providing voices to cartoons.

He became the voice first of the redesigned Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny who went through a redesign of his own, Elmer Fudd, who wasn't as bright as Porky Pig but at least could be an adversary for Bugs unlike Porky who was too sweet a guy, and Daffy Duck, a perfect opponent for Bugs, both intelligent and pugnacious. The greatest Bugs opponent was a late-comer, Yosemite Sam, all violence and animosity.

Once he was well on his way as Warners' Man of a Thousand Voices, he asked for a raise, which his cheap employer wasn't likely to go for, or for a credit. A credit in a cartoon? But at least it didn't cost anything so Blanc got his credit and people noticed. He started getting hired for radio and later TV shows. He started out doing bits on Jack Benny's show and wound up on many more shows, including the Abbott and Costello Show, and headlined his own radio show briefly. One of the best bits ever on Benny's program was the "Si-Si" routine in which Mel is a Mexican wearing a sombrero (Are you going to New York?" Si. Are you takling Flight 18? Si. Si? Si.....and so on.) (You can find it on YouTube. It's hysterical. Blanc keeps a straight face and Benny loses it everytime.)

Having recently read Lou Costello's daughter's biography of her dad, it was interesting to read Blanc's comments about how the two rarely spoke to each other but were so attuned to their specialty and so professional they could get on stage or before a camera and start cooking like they were best buds.

Blanc's autobiography covers his life, talking about he liked to plays with dialects and voices as a kid. Doing a crazy laugh in an empty school hallway whose acoustics he admired got him a visit to the principal and many years later became Woody Woodpecker's trademark laugh.

Blanc regretted the loss of quality with the full animation technique in the 1960's when the number of drawings for a cartoon were reduced in a time- and-cost-saving measure. Movements became jerkier, less natural, but he enthusiastically did his best for every one of the jobs he was hired for.

The book continues through his life, up and through the car accident in 1960 that left him in a body cast with almost every bone in his body broken. When his doctor, after many days of coma, tried to rouse him, he had a light bulb moment and asked, "How are you, Bugs Bunny?" Blanc replied as Bugs, "I'm fine, doc, how're you?"

Later, from his hospital bed, Blanc would do his lines as Barney Rubble for the hit Flintsones TV show as his co-star voice actors stood alongside.

This is an excellent book. You gotta love a book that has back cover testimonials from Vincent Price, Lucille Ball, Kirk Douglas, Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, and Daffy Duck.

A *must read* for Baby Boomers who grew up with Bugs Bunny
By Corinne H. Smith
Though the man left us in 1989, Mel Blanc will forever live on in the characters he voiced. This book provides biographical information as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the activities of the Warner Brothers studio. Readers will learn how the individual voices were created and will even see photos of Mel "portraying" the character as he talks. One of the biggest secrets of all was that he disliked carrots. He'd chew on them while recording Bug's lines, but the recording would have to stop while Mel spit out the remains into a wastebasket.
If you're a true fan of Bugs, Elmer, Porky, Daffy, Sylvester, Pepe Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, and all the rest, pick up a copy of _Chuck Amuck_ when you're finished here. You'll discover more about Warner Brothers from cartoonist Chuck Jones in that volume. And if you can, scarf around and find _Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies: a complete illustrated guide to the Warner Brothers cartoons_ by Jerry Beck and Will Friedwald. It's a fully-indexed episode-by-episode encyclopedia with cast notes and plot summaries. Keep it next to your TV.

Last Refuge of Scoundrels: A Revolutionary Novel, by Paul Lussier

Early critical acclaim from Pulitzer Prize-winning scholars and best-selling authors Studs Terkel, Jonathan Kozol, Robert Coles, Howard Zinn, John Ferling and Winston Groom: "Last Refuge of Scoundrels" is the bottom-up story of the American Revolution brought to life vividly, compellingly, suggestively. It's a story that gives America its past in a manner worthy of comparison to Tolstoy's effort to understand and render history and does so in a manner that's rich, rambunctious, exploding with vitality and bubbling with wild humor. A delightfully irreverent look at the Revolution, it tells the story of John Lawrence a naive young merchant's son who finds love and his life's purpose in Deborah Simpson, a spy working in collusion with George Washington to lead An unsung army of ordinary Americans against the self-interested Founding Fathers as much as the bumbling Brits. "Last Refuge of Scoundrels" weaves meticulous research and fantastical fable into a poetic tale that's at once a rollicking romp, a haunting love story and a revisionist historical epic.

From Publishers Weekly
The founding fathers of our country are lambasted in this strikingly raunchy account of the Revolutionary War. It seems America's revolution, led by such bumbling, incompetent idiots as John Hancock and Samuel Adams, would never have been possible without the brilliance of a street whore and her star-crossed lover. George Washington lies on his deathbed, terrified of having "lost himself" and being remembered not as George, but as the General. During his last few breaths, he is given a chance to redeem his spirit by recollecting the Revolution as it really was, through the eyes of an "angel," his former aide-de-camp, John Lawrence. John's recollections start in 1765, when this 14-year-old spoiled merchant's son ditches his tutors and roams the streets of Boston, eventually meeting one of John Hancock's whores, 16-year-old Deborah Simpson. The savvy Deborah sees through the hypocrisies of the founding fathers but believes in the truth of the cause. John spends the rest of his life following in Deborah's wake as she ignites the fires of revolution, fighting alongside men, spying for both sides and strategically planning everything from munitions storage to ambush attacks. John and Deborah are present at such historical scenes as the Boston Massacre, the battles at Lexington and Concord, and the Valley Forge horror. They both die unrecognized for their contributions. History, according to Lussier's debut novel, has done us a grand injustice by painting our independence from England as a war of ethics, led by morally upstanding citizens fed up with taxation without representation. Whether his intent is revisionist history or comic satire, Lussier, who formerly wrote for TV and now writes and produces movies for Warner Bros. Studios, certainly takes irreverence to new extremes. History scholars will take umbrage with Lussier's iconoclastic portraits, but general readers tired of present-day politics may find the novel an escapist fantasy.

From Booklist
In this no-holds-barred revisionist historical novel, the American Revolution is a movement of the people, set in motion and aided in its progress by Deborah Simpson, a whore and spy, with the sometimes-bumbling help of her compatriot-lover, John Lawrence. By contrast, the Founding Fathers--variously described as stupid, vain, fanatic, temperamental, or mad--are gentlemen concerned more with creature comforts, money, and fame and less with the commoners. The "Cause" is all that counts for Deborah, who dresses as a man to fight with the troops or as a woman when it suits her purposes. John, committed first to Deborah and then to the rebels, becomes an aide to the commander-in-chief; and even here, George Washington is portrayed as a brilliant military man, particularly when he turns to the people to win the war. Even laced with a love story, this brisk view of the Revolution, with key characters based on actual figures, is likely to appeal more to readers of history than to readers of fiction. Michele Leber

national lampoon's revolutionary war -- in the bad sense
By audrey frances
You know how funny and creative National Lampoon's Animal House was? And ever since then you keep getting your hopes up that the next National Lampoon film will actually be ,,,, you know, funny .... but it never happens. That's how I felt about this book -- high expectations followed by disappointment. Did all the funny people graduate and go to law school or something?

Based on other reviews it seems people either love this book or hate it, and I am on the fringes of the latter camp. I had high hopes. I was interested in an irreverent and more honest take on the founding fathers and it had been praised by people I respected (Howard Zinn, I feel betrayed!). I wanted to like it, but I was really disappointed -- not hating it so much as being pretty bored. I felt the book droned on and on and on, and then I'd see I'd only read another 10 pages. Usually I get through a book in two or three days; this took me almost three times as long. It was a struggle to finish it. I think a book should be entertaining and/or thought-provoking. This was neither.

The premise is great and the author is talented. He writes as if he's been to 18th century America and come back to tell us about it. There's no denying that his descriptions are great, but the characters never rise above two-dimensional puppets, gumping around without motive or reason. Well-known figures are lampooned but not better understood, and unknown characters, in particular and unfortunately the two protagonists John and Deborah, are never revealed as complex or interesting. The action is erratic and confusing. The POV changes ... but just often enough to be awkward. The humor is great but fades fast and never returns. Anachronistic speech and actions disrupt the narrative flow. I believe the revisionist facts are accurate but this book just wasn't pleasurable to read.

The style is raw. As in junior high school. One example: instead of taking some effort to introduce the characters of the Boston leadership, the author LISTS them with this introduction: "Oh, the men from the Green Dragon, they ruled. There was Hancock and Otis and Warren and Church and, of course, the Adamses: Samuel and John .... Each his own brand of mad." And then he devotes a paragraph or two to each person and gives us irreverent facts about each one. On the level of the "so very fat" John Adams. Hmm. Insightful. And then he goes back to the story. Clunk. The author brings the streets to life, but never the people on them.

Like I said, I wanted to like it. I just didn't. It's not that I didn't "get" it. It's that I was bored and irritated -- not the feelings I want a book to evoke. A much richer, entertaining and accurate book covering the same era is Kenneth Roberts' Oliver Wiswell, and this is one of those instances when the simple truth is so compelling that it doesn't need embellishment or titillation to make it palatable. Why not read something where you have to rub two brain cells together?

Because the reviews are so polarized, there is a chance you will like this book even though I didn't. Obviously some people really liked it, and maybe you will too. This is my opinion and nothing more.

A difficult book to get interested in.
By Duo Cycler
I'm afraid that I do not share the view of others that this was an interesting read and point of view of the Revolutionary war. It was a struggle to keep reading and we quit about 1/2 way through. It could have been dumped in the harbour with the rest of the tea.

The worst book I ever read. I have no interest in a fantasy of the American Revolution.

Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture, by Joan Barzilay Freund, Leigh Keno, Leslie Keno

In a country of junk-filled attics, yard sales, and flea markets frequented by millions of Antiques Roadshow viewers hoping to uncover a grungy chest of drawers worth millions, the Keno twins have become the Siskel and Ebert of antiques. Dapper, witty, and in their early forties (with nearly 60 years of combined experience between them), they symbolize the union of amateur enthusiasm and acute professionalism that has made their television program a cultural phenomenon. Now, in this fascinating collection of tales of their personal adventures hunting -- and discovering -- priceless "junk" (including some notable Roadshow success stories), readers will learn how to see the extraordinary in the mundane. "Hidden Treasures" is part history lesson and part treasure map for finding valuable antiques where they would be least expected.

Amazon.com Review
Leigh and Leslie Keno are twins with a single passion--the pursuit of American antiques. One (Leigh) is an antiques dealer in New York. The other (Leslie) is a director at Sotheby's, New York. Together with Joan Barzilay Freund--a New York-based freelance writer who specializes in American antiques--they tell tales of the hunt.

Some of the stories come from the twins' childhood in upstate New York (they started keeping antiques dealer diaries when they were 12); one riveting anecdote is set more recently in the auction room of Sotheby's, circa January 1999. But all of the treasure-hunting episodes are imbued with the drama and thrill of the chase as well as the bliss of aesthetic appreciation.

It doesn't matter whether you, yourself, have swapped bids in tense auction rooms for million-dollar furnishings, or traipsed through small-town flea markets in search of sleepers, or gained the bulk of your antiquing know-how while firmly planted in your easy chair watching the Antiques Roadshow. Because the Keno twins know their stuff and they evoke the rich details of antiques, such as the creamy surfaces of 18th-century ceramics and the plum-pudding mahogany sheen to the rare secretary bookshelf. The passion that drives them is evident on every page of the book, and that emotion is the hook that allows them to so effectively share their fascination with the reader. To read their stories is to enter their world, and while the color photographs are certainly appreciated, the prose does a fine job by itself to portray the lure of the Seymour table and the Canton ginger jar. Along the way, the life stories and distinctive personalities of the twins come through, too. By time you finish the final chapter, you will have learned a lot about American antiques, and even more about the happy souls of two brothers pursuing their craft. --Stephanie Gold

From Publishers Weekly
In Hidden Treasures: Searching for Masterpieces of American Furniture, brothers Leigh Keno and Leslie Keno of PBS's Antiques Roadshow tell how they grew into the antiques experts they are today Leigh at Christie's and now in his own business, and Leslie at Sotheby's. While relating how they have discovered, acquired and sold important pieces, they teach how to tell the good from the bad and recall the spectacular finds that add excitement to their work. Fans of the PBS series and collectors and lovers of fine furniture will all enjoy their efforts. An extensive glossary helps with terms, the bibliography supplies sources for further research and the four-color photos add to the enjoyment. 14-city author tour.

From Library Journal
The great popularity of PBS's Antiques Roadshow, along with the heightened attention to auctions and exhibitions of American decorative arts, prove that interest in collecting antiques is expanding. Is there anyone who does not secretly hope that the old family table, the slightly sloping bookcase, or the creaky rocking chair may turn out to be a a special object worthy of veneration and perhaps a tidy sum of money? Experts seen on the PBS show and with credentials from service at Sotheby's and Christies's, respectively, the authors are twins, identical not only in appearance but also in the passion with which they approach their vocation. In a series of search-and-discover episodes, the reader is taken along on adventures with Leigh and Leslie, whether it be as young boys roaming the woods of upstate New York for old barn hardware or as elegant participants in six-figure auction sales. The authors' enthusiasm comes across in every paragraph, and the reader is swept along in the marvels of finding, researching, and finally selling outstanding examples of American furniture. The book also covers the false and the fake and the resulting disappointment. Not every attic holds a treasure, but this book certainly doesDit is not only a delight to read but a fine example of painstaking research, intuitive perception, and total commitment. Highly recommended for public collections as well as art and historical libraries.DPaula Frosch, Metropolitan Museum of Art Lib., New York

CALLING ALL "ANTIQUES ROADSHOW" FANS!...
By lawyeraau
If you are familiar with Leigh Keno and Leslie Keno, the charming, identical twin brothers who often appear as appraisers on the popular "Antiques Roadshow" television program, then you will undoubtedly enjoy this audio book.
While authors do not generally make good readers or narrators of their own works, the Keno twins are the exception to the rule. Just as they do on the "Antiques Roadshow", the twins convey their unbridled enthusiasm for antique American furniture. Their passion is contagious and makes one a truly captive audience. I had purchased this audio book for a road trip and could barely tear myself away from the car until I had finished the audio book in its entirety, as it is so interesting and entertaining.
Born in rural, Mohawk Valley in upstate New York, the twins developed their passion at the feet of their parents who had dabbled in this field. At a very young age, searching for old objects with a history was a hobby that developed into a passion. As teenagers, flea markets were their stomping grounds. As they grew up, they developed by inclination and education into worldly and sophisticated connoisseurs of beautiful rare objects, specializing in antique American furniture, a niche in which they are now foremost experts.
The audio book takes you on the hunt of some of their most prized acquisitions. With an insider's look at the wonderful world of collecting antique American furniture, the twins take the listener on a journey that few would otherwise be able make, as many of their most prized acquisitions bring in six and seven figure sums. The excitement of the hunt, the thrill of the discovery of a valuable piece of antique American furniture, the history of its provenance, and the loving description of the beauty of that piece, all provide a fascinating peek into the rarified world of antiques in which the twins work.
The tone of the book is conversationally chatty and educational. The twins have a wonderful, innate ability to draw the listener into their exclusive world. Their down to earth charm is a delicious counterpoint to the exquisite and rare pieces that they have come across, all of which they share with the listener in detail, lovingly describing the craftsmanship that went into making these beautiful pieces that are so collectible today. This audio book comes with a full color pamphlet that pictorially details the pieces that are the focus of this abridged audio book and serves to enhance this most enjoyable listening experience.

Sumptuous feast for the eyes
By Jason Kirkfield
A book about beautiful antiques, and the book itself is wonderful to hold and read. Thick, glossy pages, printed in Great Britain.

Personal insights by the Keno brothers and close-up photographs of the furniture make it easy to enjoy this book, even if it gives the reader the (surely false?!) sense of hope that they, too, could find such Hidden Treasures.

A sumptuous feast for the eyes.

Implausible, but true.
By Jonathan Rickard
Remembering the twins when they were kids selling stoneware at Brimfield and then watching them race at the Vintage car races at Limerock made me want to read their story. I'd also heard some of the stories second-hand about their more notable finds so it was doubly interesting to read about people I knew like Eddie and Morgan and their connections to the stories. A minor quibble: inasmuch as the stories told are anecdotal, it's a little unsettling to find that the writer behind the stories appears to have used the Chicago Manual of Style or some other guide to ensure academic correctness when such correctness wasn't necessary. On the whole, however, the reader can feel the adrenaline rush of the new find, the drama of the saleroom and the anticipation of the doors opening at the Winter Antiques Show.
