Elizabeth, by J. Randy Taraborrelli

DESCRIPTION: Elizabeth Taylor is known internationally as one of the most beautiful and talented women to ever grace the silver screen, starring in over 60 films and winning two Oscars. She is just as well-known for her tempestuous personal life, marrying eight times and triumphing over innumerable health problems. She has been written about many times before...but never like this. This moving book traces, for the first time, Elizabeth's journey through the dark and often lonely world of fame unparalleled in the 1960s and 1970s, during which alcohol and drugs played a major role in her life. It would be with her fifth (and sixth!) husband, actor Richard Burton, that she would learn the life-changing lessons about love and loyalty that finally rescued her from alcohol in the 1980s. This book also details her philanthropic work as an AIDS activist in the 1990s, as well as her stunning success as a businesswoman today. This is not just a star's biography...it's one unforgettable woman's storied journey through life, including many never-before-published photographs.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ordinarily, readers might question the logic of a new tome on a celebrity who already has at least six full-length biographies (and four self-penned books) devoted to her life, but Elizabeth Taylor has never been ordinary. Readers will easily understand why tabloids have chronicled her escapades for six decades: her roller-coaster life could easily read like a high-sheen soap opera (the eight marriages, two Oscars, suicide attempts and innumerable life-threatening illnesses that led to years of alcohol and prescription drug addiction before she became the first celebrity to check into the Betty Ford Clinic). But Taraborrelli, a sympathetic biographer, rescues the subject by looking for psychological and emotional motives behind her actions. Taraborrelli can be overprotective of Taylor (he notes her reviews for Cleopatra were "so vicious that they are not even worth memorializing here") but more often, he's a superb storyteller who is also an enthusiastic fan. The book is a fitting tribute to a woman who has lived and loved with abandon but who found real passion and purpose when she embraced AIDS activism in 1985, helping to destigmatize the disease and creating her own AIDS foundation. Taraborrelli's chatty prose (and bite-size chapters) perfectly complement Taylor's glamorous life of highs and lows to create an irresistible and inspiring tale. Photos not seen by PW. (Aug.)

From Booklist
The breathtaking photograph on this book's cover makes it clear why no one will ever forget Elizabeth Taylor. And if her sheer beauty isn't enough, there are the details of her wild, flamboyant, and excruciatingly painful life. Taraborrelli, known for his unauthorized biographies of such celebrities as Diana Ross and Princess Grace, has done his research (or from his acknowledgments, his researchers have done their research). Certainly, there are what seem like fresh tibits of information here from a wide variety of surprising sources--family friends, guests at the Taylor-Nicky Hilton wedding (her first), and even Debbie Reynolds, from whom Elizabeth stole Eddie Fisher. But the saga of Elizabeth Taylor is practically myth at this point, so it's hard to add anything new except around the edges. Moreover, Taylor has written two autobiographies of her own, and without the cooperation of so many key figures--Taylor herself, her children, Sybil Burton--Taraborrelli isn't able to generate any insider feel to his account. (He does thank Taylor for not actively deterring people from speaking to him.) Still, despite all those built-in shortcomings, it's hard not to keep turning pages when the story you're reading is so filled with larger-than-life loves, scandals, tragedies, and, of course, stars, stars, stars. As with Lee Server's recent Ava Gardner (2006), Taraborrelli's take on Liz reminds us what movie stardom is all about. Ilene Cooper

Elizabeth the true Star
By Edmund Arredondo
Dame Elizabeth is a true star, the so called stars of today pale next to her. I didn't think there could be anything else to write on her. But Mr. Taraborrleei did find some interesting and new thing to read about the ever fascinating Taylor. As a long time fan I couldn't put the book down. I would lke to read a book on just her films and the peope who worked with her. There was pure magic looking up at that face, sometimes you forgot what a true great actress she was. Thank you, Randy.

Nine Lives of Maggie the Cat
By Addison DeWitt
I was hesitant to buy this biography, because for some reason it gave me the feel of one of those biographies full of lies. But I ended up loving it! It's told as a complete story of Ms. Taylor's life, full of detail.
I would recommend it to any of her fans, or anyone who wants to read a very entertaining story.

Dame Elizabeth: America's Reigning Queen
By J.W. Catledge
Reading some of the reviews submitted by amazon.com's customers for this immensely readible book made me think I had read a different book than they had. That Miss Taylor did not talk to the author on the record for this book, yet left the door ajar for others to speak for her, seems about as close as we'll ever get to an authorized biography of this legendary, pop-culture phenomenon. She may not consider Mr. Taraborrelli her Boswell, but how could she not relish this compelling, insightful, fact-filled telling of her tempestuous and turbulent life story. There's an old saw in the theatre that says, "Those who cannot act, teach (acting)." Perhaps those who would pick apart this book get their license to do so to come from poet James Russell Lowell's words on the matter: "Nature fits all her children with something to do; He who would write and can't write, can surely review." Amazon.com Review
"Lucy, you got some splainin' to do!" Fans of comedic genius Lucille Ball and mambo king Desi Arnaz won't want to miss I Love Lucy, the complete compendium to one of the most popular TV shows in history. Beginning with an introduction by their daughter, Lucie Arnaz, the text follows a thorough chronological outline of her parents' careers. Almost overwhelming in detail, the book contains synopses of the show's six seasons and 179 episodes, as well as telling tidbits about cast members, family, and friends. For example, the show helped heal Vivian Vance: "When she accepted the role of Ethel Mertz, she would later admit that, along with her continuing analysis, [the show] was what had provided her with the glue she needed to keep her alive and her mental health intact." More than just a collection of '50s factoids, I Love Lucy is an insightful, loving tribute to one of the most loved duos in broadcasting history.

Review
Collectors with a prior interest in Lucy collectibles and history will relish a volume which provides the most complete picture history of the shows and its stars: a lavish production indeed. Numerous black and white and color shots from the show plus behind-the-scenes family and show portraits supplement a fine, in-depth Lucy coverage. Prior fans will want to include this volume in their collections. -- Midwest Book Review

Through McClay You Get the Complete Picture
By A Customer
AMAZING!! This is one of the best books written about "I Love Lucy." Michael McClay certainly knew what he was doing when he gave us this great book on the best show in picture history. Through many pictures (many in color) and words, McClay is able to tell you ALL about "I Love Lucy" and the great people that made it so great. He tells not only about the people at the time of the show, but gives, not much but accurate, information about the four wonderful people that made the show so successful before and after the shows were made. He gives you thirty-five classic episodes that are the hits in the "I Love Lucy" shows. And also a TV-ography of the 179 "I Love Lucy" shows in the order that they went on the air. And the "I Love Lucy" Theme Song music given at the beginning of the three parts that are in this book has been played many times on my piano.
This is truely the best book there is on the show "I Love Lucy" (but no "I Love Lucy" book can beat Lucille Ball's book "Love, Lucy;" it covers her whole life as well as the "I Love Lucy" shows.Get that one too because both are both greatly recommended). Some books don't give very much or very accurate information on this show. But this one gives you all of the information, accurately, about the show.
I greatly encoutrage you top get this book especially if you are a Lucy fan (and if you are not, reading this book will give you a great start). You will NOT be disappionted. You will have too much trouble putting it down that when you finish it, you will want to read it again--you will never get tired of it. Get yours TODAY and you WILL enjoy!

An essential reference for any lover of Lucy.
By Frank Dunnigan
I received this book as a Christmas gift in 1996, and I go back to it again and again. McClay was an insider in the I LOVE LUCY family, the son of Lucille Ball's long-time publicist. The thoroughly written and illustrated volume was prepared in cooperation with Lucille Ball's family, and carries an introduction by her daughter Lucie Arnaz. I thought that I had seen and read all there was about my favorite 1950s TV program, but this book contains many new photos, from both on and off the sets, including several original color photos of the family at home. McClay's narrative contains many interesting anecdotes about the cast. The summaries of every single plot are well-written, and accompanied by numerous photos. See if your favorite episodes are contained in The Classic 35 Episodes (I'm glad that McClay did not limit it to something like 10 or 25--remember that there were 179 shows altogether!) Also included is a summary of the 13 hour-long Lucy-Desi Comedy Hours ! programs. A must-have for any Lucy fan!

A Great I Love Lucy Book!!!
By A Customer
Through Michael McClay, we can have a wonder picture of one of the best shows on TV. Through MANY pictures (a lot in color) and words, we can learn how these four greatly made this show: I Love Lucy. The book takes you through all of their lives before, during and after the show. Three parts are in this facinating book; one is about the show. And the other two are thirty-five of the classic episodes (some of which were chosen by Lucille Ball herself!!); and the last section is ALL 179 episodes in order that they went on air.
The book is definitly five stars and you cannot read this book once. It is great to just look at and you can learn so much about Luciile Ball, Desi Arnaz and Vivian Vance and William Frawley. So get yourself this I Love Lucy treasure TODAY!!!!

Starred Review. Choice, perhaps the highest good in the American socioeconomic lexicon, is a very mixed blessing, according to this fascinating study of decision making and its discontents. Psychologist Iyengar cites evidence that a paucity of choice can damage the mental and physical health of dogs, rats, and British civil servants alike. But, she contends, choice can also mislead and burden us: advertising manipulates us through the illusion of choice; a surfeit of choices can paralyze decision making; and some choices, like the decision to withdraw life support from a loved one, are so terrible that we are happier if we delegate them to others. Iyengar draws on everything from the pensées of Albert Camus to The Matrix, but her focus is on the ingenious experiments that psychologists have concocted to explore the vagaries of choice. (In her own experiment, shoppers presented with an assortment of 24 jams were 1/10th as likely to buy some than those who were shown a mere six.) Iyengar writes in a lucid, catchy style, very much in the Malcolm Gladwell vein of pop psychology–cum–social commentary, but with more rigor. The result is a delightful, astonishing take on the pitfalls of making up one's mind. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Prominent social psychologist Iyengar begins her unique and invigorating study of choice by telling the story of a man who survived for 76 days stranded alone in the middle of the ocean. He chose to live, Iyengar tells us, just as she has chosen not to let her blindness keep her from conducting prodigious research and intrepid experiments. Iyengar exponentially expands our understanding of the central role choice plays in the lives of animals and humans in a rapid-fire, many-faceted, and original inquiry that is at once personable and commanding. She explains our “biological need for choice and control,” the decision process, and the myriad influences that dictate everything from purchasing choices to career moves, voting, medical decisions, and marriage. The daughter of Sikh immigrants from India, Iyengar is particularly astute in her globally significant analysis of the striking differences between how Americans and Asians make decisions. Much of this eye-opening anatomy of choice focuses on consumerism, a lively, revealing arena, but Iyengar’s high-voltage curiosity and penetrating insights are far more valuable when applied to deeper matters of existence. --Donna Seaman

Review
"No one asks better questions, or comes up with more intriguing answers." (Malcolm Gladwell)

"Sheena Iyengar's work on choice and how our minds deal with it has been groundbreaking, repeatedly surprising, and enormously important. She is someone we need to listen to." (Atul Gawande, author of Better and Complications)

OK book, but did not live up to expectations
By Edward Barnett
I had high expectations for this book. Sheena Iyengar's research on choice is well known and often quoted, and I was looking forward to this exposition of her ideas. The book is OK, and will be a worthwhile read for those with a deep interest in choice theory and decision making; however, I personally found the book to be less valuable than other books on this subject.

More specifically:

On the positive side, the book is well researched and is particularly strong when discussing cultural differences regarding choice and decision making. It is loaded with a large number of anecdotes and research studies.

On the negative side, after having read the book, I had a hard time outlining the key points or recalling a handful of particularly powerful examples. Despite the author's frequent references to the importance of a "narrative," I struggled to find the narrative in the book.

In a nutshell, when reading this book I felt as though I would have learned a lot if I'd had the opportunity to spend a semester in one of the author's classes, benefitting from a rich give and take of ideas and arguing the interpretations of the various research findings and personal perspectives. However, not enough of that experience came through in the book -- the studies and examples were mostly ones I had read many times before, and the integrating "theory of the case" was not strongly presented.

For discussions of decision making as it relates to economic or business choices, I found "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely of Duke and "The Winner's Curse" by Richard Thaler of Princeton to be more valuable than "The Art of Choosing." For consumer choice research and issues, Barry Schwartz's "The Paradox of Choice" remains the standard. To swim in the evolution of decision theory as it struggled to integrate its joint heritage in psychology and economics, "Choices, Values, and Frames" by Dan Kahneman and Amos Tversky is the place to look. On the subject of intuitive decsion making, Malcom Galdwell's "Blink" is exceptionally well written and a joy to read.

A brilliant book on Choosing
By Amazon Customer
Ten years ago Malcolm Gladwell released "The Tipping Point" and ushered in a whole bunch of books on what new psychological research has told us about ourselves. Publishers are unwilling to take risks, so there have been many similar books since that time. Thankfully, most of them are as well-researched and written as Gladwell's book.

The latest, and definitely one of the best, is Sheena Iyenga's book, "The Art of Choosing." This book explodes the ideas we have about choice. Did you know that the U.S.A. is the place where choice is valued most highly? In Japan, for instance, people are far more likely to be told where to work and what to wear. Sheena's parents (both Sikhs) had an arranged marriage in India, and there are pictures of the wedding day. Sheena's mother seems to me to be the most beautiful woman in the world (no wonder her husband is laughing at his good fortune).

I knew two Indian programmers that had arranged marriages, but these days the men are in the U.S.A. Relatives back in India contact the parents of suitable women and, in the few weeks of the men's vacation, they go on dates with their "girlfriends," and if all goes well they date some more, until they finally find a compatible partner. This goes against the Western dream of finding a lifetime companion on your own. Apparently millions of people throughout the world manage to find someone, but the spouse is often a co-worker, a co-student, or just one of a circle of friends. We would be shocked if we weren't allowed to choose whoever we wanted to, yet in the current Indian version the women are already expecting to move abroad and to have a nerdy but well-paid husband.

Examples like this proliferate through the book. The new CEO of Coca-Cola in the 1980s had a problem with his senior vice-presidents who thought the company was doing well because they had 45 percent of the soft drink market. He asked them, "What proportion of the liquid market - not just the soft drink market - do we have?" That turned out to be only two percent. The resulting change in the world view of the company led Coca-Cola to increase sales revenue by thirty-five times in just over ten years.

The most famous of Sheena's experiment was the 1995 Jam study, conducted in Draeger's Supermarket in San Francisco. The store was known for its huge selection of every kind of food and food product it offered - 20,000 bottles of wine, 150 kinds of vinegar, and 3,000 cookbooks. Sheena wondered whether the choice was too great so she set up a sample Wilkins Jam taste station which offered either twenty-four or six samples. Anyone who sampled was given a dollar-off coupon for any flavor of the jam.

To the surprise of most people, those who sampled one of the six samples of jam were six times more likely to buy jam than those who tried one of the twenty-four flavors (the six samples were included in the twenty-four). So it seems that there is such a thing as "too much choice."

In the final chapter Sheena discusses choice when the options are limited and either one is bad. Do you take the operation that runs the risk of a five percent chance of dying, or stay with your illness even though it will kill you in the end? There are plenty more mind-challenging things throughout the book, and in the epilogue Sheena talks about seeing S.K. Jain, one of India's famous astrologers, and asks his opinion of her book. Jain says, "This book will far exceed your expectations."

I have to agree with Jain. This book far exceeded my own expectations, and I'm sure it will do the same for you. When you consider that Sheena is blind, I find amazing that she's managed to do all this with her life, and write about it as well. So be artful and choose this book. You won't regret it.

Interesting and Complete book on the subject
By ruks
This book covers everything (culture, environment, politics, economy, psychology, religion, history etc) that affects choices. It covers all types of choices from big to small. Everything written in this book is supported by first hand research by the Author herself or someone else Author is able to quote clearly. Her knowledge of the subject is very deep and thorough. Its a hard to put down book. Most valuable message I got from the book - Having less/no choices is not always bad and having lots of choices is not always good. THIS BOOK DOES NOT LECTURE ON HOW TO MAKE CHOICES. It helps you understand and makes you aware of what affects choices.

Nuovo Vesuvio. The "family" restaurant, redefined. Home to the finest in Napolitan' cuisine and Essex County's best kept secret. Now Artie Bucco, la cucina's master chef and your personal host, invites you to a special feast...with a little help from his friends. From arancini to zabaglione, from baccala to Quail Sinatra-style, Artie Bucco and his guests, the Sopranos and their associates, offer food lovers one hundred Avellinese-style recipes and valuable preparation tips. But that's not all! Artie also brings you a cornucopia of precious Sopranos artifacts that includes photos from the old country; the first Bucco's Vesuvio's menu from 1926; AJ's school essay on "Why I Like Food"; Bobby Bacala's style tips for big eaters, and much, much more. So share the big table with: Tony Soprano, waste management executive "Most people soak a bagful of discount briquettes with lighter fluid and cook a pork chop until it's shoe leather and think they're Wolfgang Puck." Enjoy his tender Grilled Sausages sizzling with fennel or cheese. Warning: Piercing the skin is a fire hazard. Corrado "Junior" Soprano, Tony's uncle "Mama always cooked. No one died of too much cholesterol or some such crap." Savor his Pasta Fazool, a toothsome marriage of cannellini beans and ditalini pasta, or Giambott', a grand-operatic vegetable medley. Carmela Soprano, Tony's wife "If someone were sick, my inclination would be to send over a pastina and ricotta. It's healing food." Try her Baked Ziti, sinfully enriched with three cheeses, and her earthy 'Shcarole with Garlic. Peter Paul "Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri, associate of Tony Soprano "I have heard that Eskimos have fifty words for snow. We have five hundred words for food." Sink your teeth into his Eggs in Purgatory-eight eggs, bubbling tomato sauce, and an experience that's pure heaven. As Artie says, "Enjoy, with a thousand meals and a thousand laughs. Buon' appetito!"

From Publishers Weekly
In what is quite possibly the most fun of all the Sopranos-themed titles being published in time for the show's September return, this tongue-in-cheek cookbook brings homestyle Soprano family cooking to the table. Artie Bucco, the character (played by John Ventimiglia) who is the chef at the show's Vesuvio restaurant, sets the tone of this book of insider "family" secrets by explaining his family's move from Campania, Italy, to New Jersey, then turns to various Soprano characters. (A brief chapter on Neapolitan cooking is explained by the Newark Public Library's Natalie del Greco, who offers recipes for a simple Marinara Sauce as well as a Sunday Gravy.) In a chapter entitled "The Soprano Family Tradition," Bucco listens as Corrado Soprano Jr., or Uncle Jun', reminisces about Newark's Little Italy (which at one time felt like an "Italian Disneyland") while whetting his appetite with thoughts of Pasta Fagiole and Panzerotti (Neapolitan Potato Croquettes). While the book's conceit is playfully written by Rucker (The Sopranos: A Family History) in the voice of each character, the recipes, by Scicolone (Italian Holiday Cooking), are solid and honest-to-goodness Italian-American dishes. In a conversation with Bucco, Carmela Soprano reveals her Sicilian upbringing through such recipes as `Shcarole and Garlic (sauteed escarole), while scale-tipping Bobby Bacala pontificates on the importance of sweets and offers his own way to make Cannoli. Even the godfather himself, Tony Soprano, lectures on the art of the grill (fans will remember his BBQ panic attack). In the end, readers are left with a book-filled with stills from Soprano episodes-that is alternately enticing and wonderfully tacky, just like the Soprano family members themselves.

GREAT recipes...GREAT character interviews (in GOOD TASTE!)
By Joel L. Gandelman
When you heard about the Sopranos Family Cookbook did you think it was just a gimmick -- that the recipes were either too difficult or not real recipes for real Italian cooking? FUHGEDDABOUDIT!
Or did you think it would be merely a recipe book with little or nothing of interest to Sopranos fans, a boring book of recipes? GEDOUDDAHEAYH!!!
The Sopranos Family Cookbook is a great concept -- such a masterful idea that you almost wonder why they didn't think of it before (actually they did, but only this year moved to "merchandising".). It's a WONDERFUL stand-alone cook-book, that includes some recipes that are simple enough for someone like me who feels like Wolfgang Puck after pouring reheated Ragu on pasta. There are BOTH simple and ornate authentic Italian recipes galore, carefully spelled out -- even instructions on the BEST way to cut garlic (it gives you the three ways, depending on the strength of the taste you want and tells you to avoid garlic presses and garlic powder which is "mayonnaiser behavior.").Tony's chef friend, Artie Bucco, who supposedly compiled the book, also gives various tips on things such as choosing olive oil and wines.
Photo-illustrated "interviews" with key cast characters deliciously season this book and they'll be a (non-homicidal) scream for Sopranos fans. In other words, you truly get TWO BOOKS in and one and can buy (or with great confidence GIFT) this book as a functional cookbook (for a beginner cook or an experienced cook) or as another one of the quickly emerging great books on what some call TV's greatest show (the other GREAT new book is David Chase's book of Sopranos scripts from the first three seasons, also available on Amazon.com).
It's impossible to list all my favorite recipes here, but JUST a few include: Marinara Sauce, Bistecca Piaaziola, Giambotta (vegetable stew), Janice Soprano's Vegetarian Baked Ziti, Standing Rib Roast (the one I want to perfect), Baked Ziti with little meatballs, Baked Chicken with Potatotes, Lemon and Oregano, Baked Chicken Cacciatore, home-de Ah Beetz (pizza), Ceasar Salad, my parent's favorite Spaghetti Puttanesca...and many more.
Sopranos fans (and cooks who want to also enjoy READING a cook book) will love the interviews with Sopranos characters. My favorite is with Tony's imported-from-Italy henchman Furio Giunta who says he doesn't like the food in America: "First, you use too much sauce on your spaghetti. Very bad. Too soupy. Can't taste the pasta, the semolina...They you do something really stupid. You drink cappuccino after dinner!"
And then there is Janice Soprano; "I grew up in a typical Italian-American family of that era and milieu...I was in charge of setting the table, given the artistic touch that I, alone among my siblings, possess...My mother Livia Pollio Soprano was a typical stay-at-home-mom..."
Just remember: one day you may be in your kitchen, nearly whacked by culinary disaster, pondering a too-difficult or too-simplistic cookbook, echoing the same exact words as Tony Soprano in the final scene of the episode Pine Barrens: "Why does everything have to be so hard? I'm not sayin' I'm perfect, but I do the right...thing for my family. Doesn't that count for anything?"
If your family hates your meal it won't. The Sopranos Family Cookbook makes it easy, authentic...and FUN. Trust me...or else...

A staple cookbook in our home
By Anne
I was hooked on this book when I first leafed through it and found the recipe for fried squash blossoms. Talk about a trip back to childhood in my Sicilian grandma's kitchen! I decided that maybe this wasn't as hokey as it sounded. As I continued through the book, I kept running across recipes that my grandmother made. Most of the recipes are simple and not overly complicated. Italian recipes don't necessarily have long lists of ingredients; it's the use of those few ingredients and the various combinations. There are not a million recipes to choose from, but what it does offer are many recipes that would be considered authentic, everyday Italian home cooking. I happen to get a kick out the anecdotal stories as well. Makes the whole cooking process more fun. The recipes work and are dependably good. There's wiggle room in them, as well, in case you want to tweak them to your personal taste., but I would strongly suggest making them exactly as given the first go around.

A Must Have for Die-hard Sopranos Fans
By Kathy_in_NEO
I ordered this cookbook so that I could use authentic "Sopranos" recipes for a dinner I made for my husband and myself to enjoy while watching the final episode of "The Sopranos". This is a fun cookbook in that it is written by "Artie" and contains stories contributed by other characters in the series. I enjoyed reading about "Janice's" memories of Sunday dinner growing up in the Soprano household; "Bobby Baccalieri's" love affair with food and the many other stories included in the book.

I have only tried two recipes so far - the baked Ziti and the Tiramisu. The Ziti was delicious but a bit time consuming to put together. Next time I decide to make it I think I will put it all together the day before so I only have to deal with baking it the next day. Tiramisu is probably my most favorite dessert. This was a simple recipe and it went together in no time. Next time I make it I plan to use cocoa powder instead of the chopped up chocolate and I also will line the dish with plastic wrap to ease the removal of the dessert from the pan. Also, I couldn't find any ladyfingers in my area so I used a sponge cake. It worked OK but after a day or so became very soggy. I wouldn't recommend using it as a replacement for the ladyfingers.

Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Objective (Jason Bourne, Book 8), by Eric Van Lustbader

Facing down mercenaries in Africa, Jason Bourne witnesses the death of an art dealer named Tracy Atherton. Her killing dredges up snatches of Bourne's impaired memory, in particular the murder of a young woman on Bali who entrusted him with a strangely engraved ring-an artifact of such powerful significance that people have killed to obtain it. Now he's determined to find the ring's owner and purpose. But Bourne never knows what terrible acts he'll discover he committed when he digs into the past.

The trail will lead him through layers of conspiracy to a vicious Russian mercenary, Leonid Arkadin, who was also a graduate of the Central Intelligence training program Treadstone. A covert course designed to create ruthless assassins for C.I., it was shuttered by Congress for corruption. Yet before it was dismantled, it produced Bourne and Arkadin, giving them equal skills, equal force, and equal cunning.

As Bourne's destiny circles closer to Arkadin's, it becomes clear that the eventual collision of these men is not of their own making. Someone else has been watching and manipulating them. Someone who wants to know, Who is the more deadly agent?

From Publishers Weekly
Lustbader's cookie-cutter fifth Jason Bourne novel in the Ludlum franchise (after The Bourne Deception) downgrades the title character to a mere co-star with villain Leonid Arkadin, a graduate of the same covert training program, who also possesses almost superhuman combat skills. Bourne and Arkadin's globe-trotting pursuit of each other drives the main plot, which includes yet another secret cabal bent on world domination, Severus Domna. The members of Severus Domna have their eye on a ring Bourne possesses that's a clue to the location of King Solomon's legendary gold. Arkadin's use of silly aliases (e.g., Stanley Kowalski, Frank N. Stein) dissipates any effort at realism, while implausible and formulaic side stories involving Soraya Moore, ousted from her position with the CIA, don't help. Those who don't mind Bourne's devolution from the tortured amnesiac soul Ludlum created into a stock action hero will be most satisfied. (June)

Please Stop Writing Bourne Books
By Corbett Hoxland
I liked the original 3 Bourne Novels. Liked, not loved. Bourne could get a bit whiny about Marie at times. Nevertheless, the original 3 Bourne Novels would get solid 4 star ratings from me.
The last batch of Bourne Novels Suck.
if I am counting them right, there are 5 novels written by Eric and each one is worse than the previous one.
I remember reading a review where they reviewer said it was terrible and that Eric goes on and on about the Nemsis and not Bourne. I thought i would give Eric one last try with the Bourne Objective.

He failed and should be shot. From one novel to the next Bourne is a different person. He no longer ages, he falls in love with women after knowing them for a day or three, yet forgets about his dead wives, he lost son and the children he abandoned.

Bourne in Erics books is terrible. I tried, really tried to like this Bourne and i cant. I hate the Bourne that Eric is writing about and will not buy another book by this author.

Instead I have taken to the Gabriel Alon series by Daniel da Silva. I find those a good enough replacement for the Bourne i was looking for.

Eric, do us all a favour and let Bourne die with dignity. Your novels have a character named Bourne in them, who gets some mention while focusing on several other characters who are boring.
Stop writing Bourne. Do something else, go kill some other series.

So-So IF you compare it to Ludlum--based on the NEW Bourne Books, pretty Good
By Jeff Edwards
It would seem those who have picked up and attempted to read the further exploits of Jason Bourne written by Eric Van Lustbader generally fall within two groups...those who seem to enjoy them, and those who compare them way TOO much to the incomparable Robert Ludlum. I admit, I fell into that category myself back when the first Post Ludlum Bourne novel was released (the Bourne Legacy). I had a difficult time separating the writing of the original 3 books with that of the new...that is until I began to see it a bit differently. I decided to judge the book based on not having read Ludlums earlier works, and upon that little epiphany, my enjoyment actually improved exponentially.

Many have chimed in on the 4th Lustbader Bourne novel being not quite up to par (at least with his other books) and while I can accept that, the Bourne Objective was an entirely different Bourne book--especially compared with #4. The storyline was a bit familiar with plots already established by the late, great Robert Ludlum, but I tried to focus on what I liked more than be picky. With that in mind, Bourne #5 became a roller coaster of suspense, and action. Death & mayhem were on virtually every other page, and finally the conspiracy came close to being what our dearly departed author may have come up with...or at least I'd like to THINK so.

For those who simply cannot separate Eric Van Lustbaders writing style from Ludlums, well, maybe you ought to just let this one pass, but if you can judge a book as though you had never read him before, I believe you just may enjoy this one--or at least a whole lot more than you will if you don't...I suppose it really depends on the person ultimately.

Will Lustbader EVER reach the status of Ludlum? My guess is no--not even close...few authors ever will if you want to be honest. In a way I like to compare these novels (loosely) to some of the many Star Wars books floating around (follow me here...), some capture the *essence* of Star Wars and the subtle character flaws as they were portrayed in film...and SOME just happen to be set in a galaxy far, far away and feature people with the names of Luke, Leia and Han--but that's about it. Some get it, some don't. While Lustbader writes quite differently than Ludlum, I still enjoyed HIS stories set in Roberts Universe. Based on that alone, I can recommend the Bourne Objective, otherwise, if you didn't like any of the others, I'd skip this one, too.

Beyond the Deep: The Deadly Descent into the World's Most Treacherous Cave, by William Stone, Barbara am Ende, Monte Paulsen

The Huautla in Mexico is the deepest cave in the Western Hemisphere, possibly the world. Shafts reach skyscraper-depths, caverns are stadium-sized, and sudden floods can drown divers in an instant. With a two-decade obsession, William Stone and his 44-member team entered the sinkhole at Sotano de San Augustin. The first camp settled 2,328 feet below ground in a cavern where headlamps couldn't even illuminate the walls and ceiling. The second camp teetered precariously above an underground canyon where two subterranean rivers collided. But beyond that lay the unknown territory -- a flooded corridor that had blocked all previous comers, claimed a diver's life, and drove the rest of the team back. Except for William Stone and Barbara am Ende, who forged on for 18 more days, with no hope of rescue, to set the record for the deepest cave dive in the Western Hemisphere.

From Booklist
Set in stygian gloom, this account of a 1994 caving expedition in southern Mexico produces what adventure readers crave: danger, dissension, death, and ultimate success. Led by author Stone, the spelunkers sought the furthest reaches of a cave system, the Sistema Huautla, which plunged a kilometer and a half down and stretched out for tens of kilometers. To go the deepest, the coveted "booty" in the caving community, Stone developed a special "rebreathing" apparatus for swimming through submerged passages called sumps. As the saga unfolds (dramatically assisted by admittedly reconstructed dialogue), the riskiness of the enterprise becomes apparent as the cavers survive various snafus, which rattle some group members who come to resent Stone's hard-charging style. A cheerful wisecracker named Ian Rolland is not daunted--but soon pays the final price for this adventure. After much acrimony about whether to continue, Stone and his then-girlfriend press on, their course marked by helpful diagrams of their progress. The technicalities of this death-defying recreation, and the raw honesty with which this episode is depicted, will win over extreme-sport fans. Gilbert Taylor

Interesting Story, But Flawed Construction
By Jackie Q.
I was really excited about reading this book because I love reading about cave diving, technical diving, and adventure stories. However, while reading this book I was often frustrated by its construction. I feel this book should have been written as a memoir. A lot of its awkwardness is due to writing what should have been a memoir as a third person nonfiction book. I wonder WHY it was written as such, since Bill and Barbara are the authors. I wish we had been allowed to get inside their heads. Especially Barbara, since she seems comes off as such a martyr without much of her own opinions.

Also, it was kind of hard to figure out the audience for the book. Some of the details were technical and presented in a way that made it confusing for me to really appreciate the quest. The book is kind of front-loaded with a lot of technical information.

At times I'd become frustrated with asides and side stories that seemed to reach no conclusion or point. They seemed interesting, but were under explained or weren't tied into the story. I also felt that the book ended kind of abruptly; since we followed Bill and Barbara so long I would have liked a more drawn out conclusion. For example (not trying to spoil the book), we're introduced to them as a couple, see the lengths they go through together, but it ends with a one-sentence line saying they broke up (yet presumably came together to write this book?).

I gave it 3 stars because I don't regret reading it and I found parts of it fascinating, but the above problems with the book prevented me from really enjoying the narrative.

A Good Adventure Read
By James T. Kent
If you like adventure books about places that you have no intention of going yourself (as in Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air"), you will like this book. Like Jon's book, this book tells the story of extreme adventurers who journey into a place that most of us would not attempt to go, and find danger and success along the way.
Bill Stone is obsessed with caving, and Huautla cave system in Mexico in particular. According to the account in the book, he spends years developing a device that allows him to stay underwater far longer than traditional oxygen tanks allow, opening up the opportunity to explore caves that contain long passageways full of water.
In this expedition, his team explores a cave that is one of the deepest in the world, but most of the cave has been undiscovered due to the long passages full of water. The story is interesting, full of danger, and even has a good ending as Bill and his friend Barbara am Ende push past the water-filled sections to new discoveries deep underground.
I enjoyed this book, and it tells the straight-forward story well. However, there are side issues that are not fully explained, such as why so many team members gave up and quit before the expedition had reached it's goal. I also find myself wondering what was so great about walking through subterranian passageways that were usually filled with water. At no point did the author indicate that these passageways were beautiful or even interesting, just undiscovered. At least on the top of Everest, the view is great!
Read it anyway. You will appreicate having a dry bed at night after reading this book.

Beyond The Deep
By Susan M. Wildburger
This was an experimental book for our book club, it was meant to experience something new and to give us an inside look at the scientific minds of these fabulously driven men and women who take and adventure and transform it into a full blown obsession, thus sacrificing their lives, their family lives, their sanity, but to understand the superficial way of thinking of the rest of the world you have to really think of the contributions to our world these people make for our benefit. For example years spend in a laboratory translate into just a simple new pill for an illness, which not many of us would give it a second thought. I thought it was a gripping tale of adventure, exploration, clash of personalities, crew sacrifices, leadership gone haywire, and mental exhaustion. Resilience and the promise of the ultimate reward at the end of the rainbow is what made this book, scientifically explicit as it was, such a page turner. You had to know what happens to the best man in that crew and if they find the booty (as they called it). The pace that it was written in deems itself worthy of being called a suspense that holds your grip until the end, as any literary work of fiction might do. Bill Stone's 13 years of dedication to develop his rebreather to facilitate and enable his divers to spend longer hours underwater was and is quite a scientific achievement to be revered. Team work and dedication is what makes the end of the story rewarding.-GREAT ADVENTURE, unusual choice for us but very much an eye-opener of a book. S.Wildburger- Dallas TX

This is obviously a book. I loved it!
By Mizdmc
Well, it clearly states besides the title of the book "HARDCOVER" so I don't understand why people assumed it was a DVD. Also, it clearly states: "Hardcover: 304 pages" I don't think a DVD have pages, so claiming that this product was "misleading" should be discounted based on the fact that the consumer was "misreading" the information.

I knew it was a BOOK when I got it so the DVD inside the cover was a welcomed bonus for me. I just started taking Zumba classes and it helps me learn the basic movements. I practiced the tutorial and played some of the bonus music toward the end of my workout. I worked up a good sweat just with the sample DVD. I loved it. That was the icing on the cake in my book. (pun intended) Now when I go to class, I can keep up. I plan to get the DVD set later on when I want to do Zumba at home. This book is simply an introduction and background on Zumba for those who are thinking "what is Zumba? or "how did Zumba get started?"

For those who are interested in buying the DVD set, you can do that right on Amazon.com. Just type in: "Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation System DVD Set" and it will pop right up. (See, DVD is in the title). Just be ready to shell out $64.95 plus shipping. I'm sure it is well worth it. It is in my shopping cart to get later on this month.

Consumers, PLEASE do everyone and yourself a favor by reading the information on a product before running off to post a negative comment. It reflects poorly on you by misreading the information before submitting your review.

As they say, "reading IS fundamental."

Happy reading!
