Only a graying segment of the American public will have watched The Mickey Mouse Club (on ABC, preceded by American Bandstand), but they’ll flock to this oral history of the TV show that helped shape the Baby Boomers. So influential was the show that readers may be shocked to learn it only lasted three years (1955–57), albeit with plenty of later repackaging. For the original members of the cast, these few short years cast a long shadow over the rest of their lives, as some succeeded and others faltered badly in their post-Mouseketeer years. All of the A team are represented here (that’s really what they were called), some through interviews but others from previous writings, notably Annette Funicello, who has struggled for 20 years with MS, and Darlene Gillespie, who went to prison for shoplifting. Also present are preteen heartthrobs David Stollary and Tim Considine, who played Spin and Marty, along with lesser-known Mice. Down memory lane with the Mouseketeers

What wonderful memories of my childhood this book brought back! I was 10, going on 11, when the Mickey Mouse Club first went on the air, and for a long time I don't think I missed a single episode.

I was one of the multitude of little boys who fell madly in love with Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, the "brunette goddess," as Jennifer Armstrong refers to her in one passage in the book. Apparently Annette -- or "Annie" as she was called by her friends -- was as kind and well-liked by her peers as she was adored by her pre-pubescent male admirers. But Armstrong points out something that I noticed myself when watching the MMC, all those many years ago, and which bothered me: Annette, as beautiful and charismatic as she was, was far from being the most talented Mouseketeer. That honor probably went to Darlene Gillespie -- less beautiful, although certainly pretty enough; blessed with a dynamite singing voice, a fine dancer, and a first-rate little actress. She had the drive, the elan, that Annette just didn't possess. But, Annette was Walt Disney's favorite Mouseketeer (he discovered her), and received the lion's share of the fan mail which came pouring in to the show. Thus, it was Annette who was targeted for bigger things -- including at least one acting role on the show that Darlene felt she deserved. That, and a couple of bad breaks that were just nobody's fault, apparently left Darlene with a lifelong hurt that she has never been able to assuage. Sad, for a kid who had so much to offer.

Then there was Lonnie Burr, who always contrived to have his pompadour of blond hair showing in front of his mouse ears, despite the efforts of the director to keep the male Mouseketeers looking like "little monks," as one Mouseketeer remembered many years later. And Tommy Cole, a super singer who was a little two-left-footed when it came to dancing. And Bobby Burgess, with his huge Pepsodent smile, and Sharon Baird, who could flat dance the hinges off a door together. I still remember seeing a segment mentioned in the book in which the Firehouse Five Plus Two, a jazz group, played for the Mouseketeers, and Bobby and Sharon did some of the best "old-fashioned rock 'n' roll dancing" I've ever seen.

And of course there was Jimmie Dodd, the genial, gentle Big Mouseketeer who was the adult chaperone, as it were, and songwriter and singer for the group. And the Big Mooseketeer, Roy Williams, a fat, jovial Disney animator whose talents with crayon and paper were often displayed on the show (and who apparently wasn't above letting fly with an "expletive deleted" or an off-color joke during rehearsals; of course, the kids loved that!)

Armstrong tells us how the show lasted only three years in its original format, with some Mouseketeers being dropped and new ones hired, right along. By 1958, the oldest (Bobby and Darlene) were 17 and were getting tired of their mouse ears and the T-shirts with their names on the front, and all the originals were wanting to move on into true teenhood. But the show never really went "off the air" for years, as re-runs and other treatments of the original material continued to be aired. There was a large segment of the American "kid" audience who loved the wearers of those ears, and who didn't want to give them up.

So, the originals became adults, with marriage, children, and their own careers. Bobby Burgess continued with his first love, dancing, for 11 years on the Lawrence Welk Show, and continues down to the present day with his own dance studio. Tim Considine and David Stollery of "Spin and Marty" fame became a writer and an automobile designer, respectively. Sharon Baird worked for many years playing costumed characters who danced on TV. Doreen Tracy pursued a show business career, including appearing twice, nude, in a men's magazine, much to the horror of the Disney organization. Carl "Cubby" O'Brien, who was a whiz-bang little drummer, made a career out of it with various bands. His partner "Little Mouseketeer," Karen Pendleton, who never felt she was very talented, sadly became a paraplegic in a 1983 traffic accident.

Darlene, with tremendous talent and drive but never able to get the right break (Annette was in the way for too much of her early years), allowed her bitterness over that to affect her whole life, culminating in her arrests for white-collar crimes as partner of her boyfriend and later husband, Jerry Fraschilla. She was sentenced in 1999 to two years in prison in a check-kiting scheme.

And Annette, who all her former Mouseketeers (except, probably, Darlene Gillespie) speak well of, developed multiple sclerosis in the late 1980s, and has been out of the public eye for most of the time since.

Armstrong's book is a quick read, but a very satisfying one, especially for those of us who remember the Mickey Mouse Club because we were there, in front of our TV sets, joining in to sing, "We are the Merry Mouseketeers, Mouseketeers! We've got a lot above our ears, above our ears! ..."

A must read for fans for fans of the original Mickey Mouse Show

I think this book is a "Where are they now?" Book and a "Behind the Scenes" Book of the original Mickey Mouse Club . It is fascinating to learn about the different personalities of the show including the adult members of the cast.

Unfortunately, of what happened to the individual Mouseketeers, I already knew from little pieces of news stories. Some missed the attention from being stars so much that they acted out but others were real success stories later in life.
So what was new for me was what it was like to be a Mouseketeer. The difficult auditions, the scary rehearsals, the friendships and backstage jealousies were all covered.

I was a little surprised at how strict Walt Disney was and unforgiving of childish wishes and desires. Also, I was surprised at how quickly he fired children from the show. If you can sing and dance, must you also act? The kids treated him with great respect but could not bring themselves to call him "Uncle Walt".
The children's' favorite was Jimmie Dodd. I think he was their best grown up friend.

I loved getting to know the background of the kids and how they got on the show. So my quarrel is not with this unauthorized but well researched book but with the way children were treated back in the 1950s. I do remember some regimentation then in public school so it shouldn't be all that surprising.
I am very glad that Paul Peterson, a former Mouseketeer and heart throb from the Donna Reed show runs an advocacy group for child stars. It was sad to read about the fired Mouseketeers who didn't think of themselves as 'good enough'. I hope that Paul Peterson and others will create ways and means to protect young stars.

This book is very well written, there is an appendix in the back with summaries of the different star lives.
'Why, Because we still Like You' brought back so many memories. I remember racing home to settle down in front of our Philco TV set with my mother on the couch. I sang the Mickey Mouse song along with TV and the roll call was my favorite part of the show.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of the original Mickey Mouse show.

This wonderful collection of stories from the original Mouseketeers gives you behind the scenes details and insights. These were the original child stars when television was a new medium and the regulations were probably more strict than today. Though there are tales of underage drinking and shy kisses, I don't think these kids were as wild as today's children stars. I watched the reruns of the shows since I had older brothers and a sister. We went to Disneyland regularly and were very much in tune with that culture.

This isn't a full historical account of the Micky Mouse Show, but more of recollections that probably couldn't have been told before. The updates of each member towards the end of the book is really enlightening. These people had the best and worst of show business. Overall it is just a nice book to quickly read.

Inspirational and a Truly Delightful Love Story

In this day and age of one-night-stands/casual sex, disbelief in a sovereign God, and divorce rates at an all time high (wonder why?) it's refreshing to read a book that reflects two people who truly were in love and as commited to each other, as they were to their relationship with God. I found it very refreshing and instills my strongly held belief that maintaining a strong faith in God, holding onto a higher moral standard, and having faith there is someone special out there (don't settle for less!) will result in an unselfish and loving heart and the morals and values needed to maintain and truly have a rewarding, long and satisfying relationship beyond our wildest dreams.

Takes a Genealogist

Love in the 90s is an inspiring document of a true-life love story. If you despair of ever finding real love, if your view of love in the new Millennium is jaded, if you think romantic love cannot last longer than one full cycle of the moon, you must read this book. The wonder of it is that these two passionate lovers became passionate genealogists, too. They recognized the importance of documenting significant thoughts and moments on paper and handing them down to their progeny. Without that sense of history, these wonderful love letters might never have touched loves in the year 2000. Do read them and glory in the wonderful photographs taken of the Blakeys by their devoted granddaughter, Keri Pickett.

Starred Review. Choice, perhaps the highest good in the American socioeconomic lexicon, is a very mixed blessing, according to this fascinating study of decision making and its discontents. Psychologist Iyengar cites evidence that a paucity of choice can damage the mental and physical health of dogs, rats, and British civil servants alike. But, she contends, choice can also mislead and burden us: advertising manipulates us through the illusion of choice; a surfeit of choices can paralyze decision making; and some choices, like the decision to withdraw life support from a loved one, are so terrible that we are happier if we delegate them to others. Iyengar draws on everything from the pensées of Albert Camus to The Matrix, but her focus is on the ingenious experiments that psychologists have concocted to explore the vagaries of choice. (In her own experiment, shoppers presented with an assortment of 24 jams were 1/10th as likely to buy some than those who were shown a mere six.) OK book, but did not live up to expectations

I had high expectations for this book. Sheena Iyengar's research on choice is well known and often quoted, and I was looking forward to this exposition of her ideas. The book is OK, and will be a worthwhile read for those with a deep interest in choice theory and decision making; however, I personally found the book to be less valuable than other books on this subject.

More specifically:

On the positive side, the book is well researched and is particularly strong when discussing cultural differences regarding choice and decision making. It is loaded with a large number of anecdotes and research studies.

On the negative side, after having read the book, I had a hard time outlining the key points or recalling a handful of particularly powerful examples. Despite the author's frequent references to the importance of a "narrative," I struggled to find the narrative in the book.

In a nutshell, when reading this book I felt as though I would have learned a lot if I'd had the opportunity to spend a semester in one of the author's classes, benefitting from a rich give and take of ideas and arguing the interpretations of the various research findings and personal perspectives. However, not enough of that experience came through in the book -- the studies and examples were mostly ones I had read many times before, and the integrating "theory of the case" was not strongly presented.

For discussions of decision making as it relates to economic or business choices, I found "Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely of Duke and "The Winner's Curse" by Richard Thaler of Princeton to be more valuable than "The Art of Choosing." For consumer choice research and issues, Barry Schwartz's "The Paradox of Choice" remains the standard. To swim in the evolution of decision theory as it struggled to integrate its joint heritage in psychology and economics, "Choices, Values, and Frames" by Dan Kahneman and Amos Tversky is the place to look. On the subject of intuitive decsion making, Malcom Galdwell's "Blink" is exceptionally well written and a joy to read.

A brilliant book on Choosing

Ten years ago Malcolm Gladwell released "The Tipping Point" and ushered in a whole bunch of books on what new psychological research has told us about ourselves. Publishers are unwilling to take risks, so there have been many similar books since that time. Thankfully, most of them are as well-researched and written as Gladwell's book.

The latest, and definitely one of the best, is Sheena Iyenga's book, "The Art of Choosing." This book explodes the ideas we have about choice. Did you know that the U.S.A. is the place where choice is valued most highly? In Japan, for instance, people are far more likely to be told where to work and what to wear. Sheena's parents (both Sikhs) had an arranged marriage in India, and there are pictures of the wedding day. Sheena's mother seems to me to be the most beautiful woman in the world (no wonder her husband is laughing at his good fortune).

I knew two Indian programmers that had arranged marriages, but these days the men are in the U.S.A. Relatives back in India contact the parents of suitable women and, in the few weeks of the men's vacation, they go on dates with their "girlfriends," and if all goes well they date some more, until they finally find a compatible partner. This goes against the Western dream of finding a lifetime companion on your own. Apparently millions of people throughout the world manage to find someone, but the spouse is often a co-worker, a co-student, or just one of a circle of friends. We would be shocked if we weren't allowed to choose whoever we wanted to, yet in the current Indian version the women are already expecting to move abroad and to have a nerdy but well-paid husband.

Examples like this proliferate through the book. The new CEO of Coca-Cola in the 1980s had a problem with his senior vice-presidents who thought the company was doing well because they had 45 percent of the soft drink market. He asked them, "What proportion of the liquid market - not just the soft drink market - do we have?" That turned out to be only two percent. The resulting change in the world view of the company led Coca-Cola to increase sales revenue by thirty-five times in just over ten years.

The most famous of Sheena's experiment was the 1995 Jam study, conducted in Draeger's Supermarket in San Francisco. The store was known for its huge selection of every kind of food and food product it offered - 20,000 bottles of wine, 150 kinds of vinegar, and 3,000 cookbooks. Sheena wondered whether the choice was too great so she set up a sample Wilkins Jam taste station which offered either twenty-four or six samples. Anyone who sampled was given a dollar-off coupon for any flavor of the jam.

To the surprise of most people, those who sampled one of the six samples of jam were six times more likely to buy jam than those who tried one of the twenty-four flavors (the six samples were included in the twenty-four). So it seems that there is such a thing as "too much choice."

In the final chapter Sheena discusses choice when the options are limited and either one is bad. Do you take the operation that runs the risk of a five percent chance of dying, or stay with your illness even though it will kill you in the end? There are plenty more mind-challenging things throughout the book, and in the epilogue Sheena talks about seeing S.K. Jain, one of India's famous astrologers, and asks his opinion of her book. Jain says, "This book will far exceed your expectations."

I have to agree with Jain. This book far exceeded my own expectations, and I'm sure it will do the same for you. When you consider that Sheena is blind, I find amazing that she's managed to do all this with her life, and write about it as well. So be artful and choose this book. You won't regret it.

This book covers everything (culture, environment, politics, economy, psychology, religion, history etc) that affects choices. It covers all types of choices from big to small. Everything written in this book is supported by first hand research by the Author herself or someone else Author is able to quote clearly. Her knowledge of the subject is very deep and thorough. Its a hard to put down book. Most valuable message I got from the book - Having less/no choices is not always bad and having lots of choices is not always good. THIS BOOK DOES NOT LECTURE ON HOW TO MAKE CHOICES. It helps you understand and makes you aware of what affects choices.

About the Author
Kia DuPree, a former assistant editor at St. Martins Press, received the Fiction Honor Book Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association for her debut, self-published novel, Robbing Peter, in 2005. Kia's short story, Lost One, was recently included in #1 Essence bestselling author Shannon Holmes' anthology HOOD 2 HOOD, which was released in March 2008.

Kia holds a B.A. in Mass Media Arts from Hampton University, as well as an M.A. in English from Old Dominion University. Kia currently resides in Washington, DC.

dark, gritty and profound

In Washington, D.C. ten years old Camille Logan is placed with her latest foster family as part of a swinging door system that ignores the welfare of the child once placed because the social services' workload is overwhelming. Over the next few years, she is abused and sexually molested. The system never bothers to take a look at Camille or her care providers as she is out of sight and therefore out of mind.

Drug dealer Chu is disgusted with what he sees happening to Camille and takes her into his home. He takes care of her until he is murdered in a drug deal. Camille desperately decides to become a hooker working for a nasty abusive pimp, which makes her wonder if she has other options to get off the mean streets of DC.

Damaged is a dark, gritty and profound look at life in DC when a poor youth is caught up in the foster care system and consequently the streets. The cycle seems inevitable though Camille hopes to break out. Although the climax fails to live up to a moving character driven story line that captures the essence of surviving in America's urban jungle, fans will appreciate Kia DuPree's powerful inner city hustle; the perfect capitalism system as anyone is for sale on the open market with no tax or surcharge; just supply and demand.

Couldn't Put It Down!!!

Not only was this an enjoyable read but a definite page turner! The character developments were wonderful and the author gives enough information on the characters to feel emotions for/with them. Without giving away any of its plots -- Damaged isn't just about prostitution, drugs, guns, materialistic things and getting paid. It's a telling of how street life, in general, can change the lives of the most innocent. This book is the story of how life can throw you curve balls and how you can make the best (or worst) of them. This is the second book by Ms. Kia DuPree that I've enjoyed reading and I look for her to keep them coming!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!

Ten year old Camille Logan moves in with her new foster family The Brinkleys. The Brinkleys look like the ideal family until Mr. Brinkley decides to make late night visits to both his foster daughters. Camille and foster sister Danica adapt til the abuse and it just becomes normal for them. Camille finds handsome Chu a drug dealer who loves her so much and will do anything for her. Everything is going great for the young couple until Chu is murdered.

Chu's friend Nut preys on Camille and soon has her turning tricks for a living. Camille goes through a lot in this novel and has a hard time trying to get out of her situation.

This book had great potential but a lot of unfinished storylines made it somewhat disappointing. I didn't get enough details on her family background and I didn't know what the main character or most of the other characters looked liked. I think this was a good effort, but it was just all over the place. Better luck next time with your next book.

A Powerful Book

This is my all-time favorite devotional book. It delivers a quick shot-in-the-arm for all that ails us. I've ordered copies for my grown daughters for Christmas. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Overrated

Joyce Meyer's approach is common sense and rooted in the Bible. It is easy to read and understand. For a new believer, or just someone without much time to study the Bible, there are many valuable nuggets of truth to be gained from this devotional. That said, some of the biblical interpretations and advice seem exagerrated. While the book is a devotional and its purpose is not to provide advanced hermeneutical study, I would like to see better supported conclusions. Sometimes the devotionals seem to play "fast and loose" with Scripture, relying on surface level readings and paraphrases. In a few cases, I suspected that the wrong verse was cited. But in most cases, I simply feel that her paraphrases are too loose.

To illustrate, here is one example. On page 165, she discusses going through trials and states, "By the way, the attitude that you have while you are going through is most important. The Word says that it is to be a joyful attitude, otherwise you may have to make the trip again. (James 1:2-4)." When I read this, I thought, "Hmmm, I don't remember a Bible verse that said that." I looked it up, and the NIV says here, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." There's no mention in the verse of repeating trials. I think you could make a logical argument either for or against this interpretation. My point is that the author does neither, she simply gives her own interpretation and cites the verse as though she'd quoted from it. And that bothers me.

Still, mainstream Christians will agree with at least 90% of the book's conclusions, and they are presented in a very accessible way, so it has its place as a contribution to the Christian church.

A nice devotional

This devotional is a bit different than most, in that the devotions are listed by topic, rather than dates.
There is a Bible verse at the beginning of each, then a few paragraphs by Joyce, then a "Do This" suggestion or a prayer.
It is a bit over 200 pages, so you wouldn't want it instead
of 365 daily devotion book. This would be a lovely evening devotions book, or one for a new believer.

Inspirational story!

When Susette Kelo's five boys grew up and moved out of the rural house she shared with her husband it became apparent that their marriage was no longer working. Susette made the decision to leave him and move out on her own. Having also made the decision to use no money from their joint account all Susette was able to afford was a small fixer upper on the waterfront in New London, Connecticut.

Around the same time Susette purchased her new home and began to fix it up. The New London Development Corporation was formulating a plan to re-develop the waterfront which included the Ft. Trumbull area where Susette's house was located by selling the land to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

When Susette and more than a few of her neighbors refused to sell, the city and the NLDC tried to take their homes using eminent domain, the law which allows the state to seize a citizen's private property for public use. What resulted was court case that made it all the way to the Supreme Court and a fight that lasted over 9 years.

The amazing spirit of Susette Kelo and the other families that refused to leave is so moving. They refused to back down when it seemed impossible that they would ever win. I admire they way Susette showed no sign of weakness in front of the big corporation and the rest of her opposition.

The news stories about the case became national news and the Supreme Court ruling became one of the most unpopular rulings of all time. Since this case states either have or are considering amendments to the eminent domain law which prohibit the state turning over land seized under the guise of public use over to private corporations.

My review is based on the abridged audio version which was read by Maggi-Meg Reed. I think that listening to this as opposed to reading gave me a better mental picture of Susette as fighter and a strong woman to admire. I highly recommend this book to readers of all genres as it is an inspirational story.

Fabulous Read, well worth your time

This is a fabulous book that takes you on the journey of the Ft. Trumbull neighborhood in New London, CT. You wll be outraged when you read what this neighborhood went through when put up against Eminent Domain. Its amazing to read how Susette Kelo stood up to her City, her State and the US Supreme Court, not for anything other than to hold onto the American Dream of owning and keeping her home. Its a page-turner with a conscience.

An American Disconnect

This book is a case study on the disconnect between the American people and their government at both the state and federal levels. It shows that the bureaucrats in Washington and Hartford (in this instance) simply operate in a world of their own that has no connection with the reality of the life of a typical American citizen.

(Addendum to this review: In November of 2009, Pfizer announced that it was closing its New London office, thereby reinforcing the harsh criticism of the inept development planners in New London -- as well as the critics of the controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling against the local homeowners and in favor of the commercial development of New London on Pfizer's behalf. Moreover 43 states have since enacted legislation preventing the kind of eminent domain taking that is described in this book.)

The book's author, Jeff Benedict, tells the tale of a woman in New London, Connecticut and seven of her neighbors who watched in horror as their government proceeded to use eminent domain to seize their private homes and eventually bulldoze them to the ground in an effort to help the Pfizer drug company expand its research facilities in the town of 25,000 people on the Connecticut shore.

Worse, when the woman, Susette Kelo, and her supporters seek justice at the nation's highest judicial level, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the town has the right to seize private property to further commercial interests, all in the name of the "public good" - even though the commercial interests destroy lives in local neighborhoods.

The whole New London episode was, in a word, a scam against the private property rights of American citizens. In her dissenting opinion of the Supreme Court's ruling, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said:

"...the fallout from this decision will not be random. The beneficiaries are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political process, including large corporations and development firms. As for the victims, the government now has license to transfer property from those with fewer resources to those with more. The Founders cannot have intended this perverse result."

"Perverse" is the operative word here. The U.S. Supreme Court essentially broadened the concept of eminent domain far beyond the narrow definition that the founding fathers used to allow governments to seize private property for the "public good." Under the new Kelo precedent, local, state and federal governments can do anything they want irregardless of the injustice they inflict on private citizens and their property.

The lead character in this book is Susette Kelo, a single woman with five children. After her marriage fails, Kelo becomes a emergency medical technician in New London and on one of her calls she sees a small house on the New London waterfront near a defunct revolutionary military facility, Fort Trumbull. Kelo is captivated by the house, eventually buys it, renovates it (she paints it pink) and makes it her castle.

But not for long, because up in the ivory tower at nearby Connecticut College, the president of the exclusive school gets it in her mind that she wants to help New London rejuvenate itself. Dr. Claire Gaudiani is a saucy, ambitious woman who likes to flaunt her feminine mystique. On the prowl for a civic role, she decides that the Fort Trumbull area of New London is the perfect place to develop in support of the Pfizer pharmaceutical company's plans to expand its research facilities. Under Gaudiani's "vision," the 90-acre parcel of land will be the site of a luxury hotel, a marina, fancy shops and upscale office and residential neighborhoods that will support Pfizer's expanded facility. The scheme is an audacious effort to attract upscale tenants that will fatten New London's tax base.

The only obstacle to the scheme is the poor neighborhood of residential homes in the Fort Trumbull area. No problem, Gaudiani concludes: just seize the homes under the eminent domain principal, and bulldoze them down to the ground.

The neighborhood, however, doesn't see eye to eye with Gaudiani and her New London Development Corporation, and their plight captures the attention of a lot of sympathetic prominent officials, including New London Mayor Lloyd Beachy. Over the course of several months, the locals also attract the attention of Scott Bullock, an attorney at the Institute of Justice in Washington, DC. The institute is a public interest organization that focuses on property rights, economic liberty, free speech and school choice, and the plight of the Fort Trumbull residents whose homes are threatened by the prospect of seizure under eminent domain proved to be an ideal issue for the institute to defend..

In this well written, well documented book, author Jeff Benedict details the eight-year confrontation between Gaudiani and the NLDC versus the local neighborhood and the Institute of Justice. Benedict's narrative captures all the flavor of the participants and the issues. (Benedict is the author of Without Reservation, a book about how Native Americans in southeast Connecticut were able to build one of the largest casinos in the world through the manipulation of willing state and federal officials in Hartford and Washington).

In Benedict's account of the New London fiasco, Kelo and her neighbors are clearly the heroic victims who stands up for their rights (which they ultimately lost). The villains are Claire Gaudiani and the NLDC, Governor John Rowland (who ended up in jail on separate corruption allegations), and the majority on the U.S. Supreme Court who affirmed New London's right to seize private property in favor of private development. But there are lots of other colorful characters, as well, who figure prominently in Benedict's narrative. Former New London Mayor Lloyd Beachy took the residents side from the beginning and almost negotiated a compromise that would avoided all the legal skirmishing.

But that didn't happen. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which defied all practical logic and affirmed the city's right to seize and destroy private property in its quest for more tax revenue.

Even more astonishing, however, was the public reaction after the court's ruling. Benedict tells how Kelo and her neighbors drew support from all over the country. The Institute of Justice took advantage of that reaction to conduct an educational campaign that encouraged the U.S. Congress and state legislatures to revise the law so that private property rights were even further protected. Ironically, one of the few states not to take action in that regard was Connecticut.

In the end, Kelo and her neighbors finally, and reluctantly settled their case when the state offered significant monetary settlements to move on. Kelo held out for her pink house to be moved out of the 90-acre tract and relocated nearby where it has become a symbol of the fight for property rights. She herself found a similar waterfront property across the river in Groton where she has since relocated.

And the 90-acre plot that was supposed to be developed into an upscale commercial/residential neighborhood with a marina and luxury hotel? The local homes were flattened and the 90-acres was cleared. But Benedict reports that nothing was built, and given the current economic crisis, it is likely that for all its efforts to trample over its residents and their property rights, the state and the New London Redevelopment Corporation spent more than $70 million of public money to acquire a very large vacant lot where no one is paying any taxes. Now there's a disconnect.
