Getting better

Really impressed with this series to date. The first book was pretty good, Forest of Stars got even better. I've adjusted to the short chapters and rapid plot development that was a little disconcerting in book 1, and am really starting to enjoy it. It's nice to see an author who doesn't spend 5 pages describing a building or hole in the ground, but rather moves the pace along quickly and had great action sequences. Some may criticize this series as a cheap thrill because of the brevity of chapters and such, and maybe they're right. But who cares? It's extremely well written, the plot and characters are intriguing, and it leaves you hungry for more. I only hope Anderson continues his high quality work in books 3 and 4. But up to this point I'm very pleased with the Saga of the Seven Suns. A great scifi series that is not to be missed.

Williams—senior v-p of the NBA's Orlando Magic, former general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, author (How to Be Like Mike) and a motivational speaker—draws on the lessons he's learned as a Christian, a father (of 19 biological and adopted children) and a sports executive in this book on training and inspiring children to become future leaders. After interviewing more than 500 well-known leaders, including Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, leadership guru John Maxwell and Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, Williams concludes that effective leaders aren't born but made. He outlines seven steps to becoming an effective leader: "see a vision," "be a communicator," "build good people skills," "build good character," "build competence," "be bold" and "be a servant." Using Jesus as his model, Williams points out that the best leaders pursue their roles not for power but to serve. Not surprisingly, Williams claims that getting children involved in sports is the best way to begin teaching them leadership skills, but he also allows for other avenues, such as scouting and the arts. While Williams's core premise—that developing young leaders is a "top goal" for parents—is certainly arguable, readers who do place leadership high on their list of hopes for their children won't be disappointed by this amiable and instructive text.

Wrong Title, Right Book.

I can still remember my wife's first reaction when I was reading this book. "I hope you ain't gonna be the overstimulating dad that cries it's lungs at our son's football match!". Our kid couldn't even walk at the time...

This book is not about those gruesome parents who push their kids too hard. It is not about any shortcuts in life, cause there aint. This book is about passing on knowledge and even more targeted at teaching teens than young childeren.

The content of this book is the opposite of the title, straightforward and full of supporting knowledge. Pat Williams has been in the game of teaching for decades and has a very large family, so he should know. Use his knowledge to your advantage. Not to push your kids, but to prepare them for the adult world that is eventually coming their way.

Not Just for Teaching Kids... But Teaching Yourself

I bought this book because I wanted to learn how to better train my children to grow up to be leaders. As I started reading I quickly found that this book isn't just for parents of children, but for anybody who wants to learn what it means to be a better leader themselves.

Coaching provides example after example of leaders in business, sports and politics and how they learned to develop themselves into leaders. Many of their stories talk about how they became leaders early on in childhood because of mentors, teachers and parents who pushed them to be something great.

Each chapter takes the reader through the leadership process, what it means and how to become and effective leader. Coaching is simultaneously an inspirational book while also providing solid points, tips and strategies in developing oneself (or one's children) into strong leaders. No leadership rock is left unturned or secret uncovered.

Ballard used a specially designed remote imaging system to locate and photograph the wreck and then returned the following year to further survey and photograph the site in a three-person submarine. This pictorial record of his expedition is filled with good quality color and black-and-white pictures. Wherever possible he compares the modern-day pictures to original ones of the Titanic . After briefly discussing other attempts to find the Titanic , he gives a solid account of the sinking, then details the events that led to the ship's discovery. This is a sensational book.I have read this one quite a bit.

I love the bit where they find the boiler on the bottom of the ocean.

It talks about the trials they went through trying to find the elusive Titanic.Nobody had seen that ship since it sunk in 1912.

I have always loved reading about that ship,something about the whole story has fascinated me.

I think the era it all happened in,as well as the beauty of the ship itself.It certainly had a mystique of its own.

To look at the pictures of the ship how it has deteriorated over time is very ghostly.To see objects such as dolls heads and boots realy shows you the tragedy that once happened on a very cold night.

The stupidity to push the ship full speed through an iceberg field maked the mind boggle.Playing dice with all those lives,and to top it all off the lack of life boats on board.

Dr.Robert D. Ballard became a legend himself after the discovery of the most famous ship to ever hit the waves.

HONEST LOOK AT DISCOVERY

Ballard's book takes us from his early days at Woods Hole, where he dreamed of finding Titanic, to the discovery in '85, and finally to the 1986 expedition, that examined the wreck thoroughly. It is written well, and illustrated beautifully, with pictures of the wreck site set alongside ones showing the ship in 1912.

Ballard's honesty in writing this book is striking. He makes no attempt to portray himself as a great hero, finding Titanic like an oceanic cowboy, but rather lays out his strengths and weaknesses for others to judge. He is clearly proud of his accomplishment, yet regrets some of his actions, if only for the meaning others might take from it. Few authors have ever been so modest.

I was also pleased that the book dealt with the sinking itself as much as it did. The bulk deals with the discovery of course, but the last chapter sheds light on Titanic mysteries based on the wreckage. One never feels the chilly, star lit night of 1912 to be very far away.

Ooooh - I couldn't put it down. There's drama - Lenora's been dating her boyfriend for 3 years and he still won't commit. Her 2 best friends don't help - or maybe they do - since they keep telling her to find someone else who will. Lenora has a hard time making it to work on time and she's in trouble with her boss. So when she goes from living paycheck to paycheck to being a multi-millionaire, she expects for all of her troubles to disappear - but they only seem to magnify. With her help.

We're watching Lenora navigate the turbulent waters of post-millionaire status relationships, careers, and sense of self. She doesn't always react the way we'd like to, and at times it's like watching a train wreck - both the devastation and the voyeurism, but boy is this a compelling read.

I truly enjoyed the way Connie Briscoe puts the story together - the first chapter starts after Lenora has won the lottery, and in the second chapter the reader is taken back to her life before the winnings. I think all the elements came together in this one, although I wasn't sure how neatly it would be wrapped up in the end. But the characters were well-developed, the plot kept me guessing, although there were a few cliche scenes, and the dialogue was action-packed.

I haven't read Connie Briscoe in several years and I'm glad I chose to pick up another of her books. I can see the maturity of the author in this one. I liked it a lot.

engaging morality tale

Baltimore Scene magazine photographer Lenora Stone feels like a failure in her personal life especially when she takes pictures of the city's upper crust, which she wants to join. Instead she is living pay check to pay check pushing off bills due in a condo not much bigger than a closet. Her boyfriend Gerald refuses to move their relationship to a more intimate level and her boss Dawna is on her case to do more starting with her shoot of Ray the landscaper.

Although Lenora knows Dawna meant pictures, she wants to do more personally with the hunk. When Lenora wins $5 million in the Maryland lottery, she believes her luck has changed and she will be the one in the photos. Gerald asks her to marry her and Lenora has an affair with Ray. However, she runs through her winnings in rapid time as she buys a mansion and opens a studio as well as other high-priced luxurious items. While her long time friends worry about Lenora's changes, she kicks them to the curb seeking the rich and famous.

Although the plot is thin, readers will enjoy Connie Briscoe's morality tale of a woman who learns the hard way that money cannot buy happiness if one allows the glitter of gold to dump one's self worth values. Fans will dislike Lenora yet the talent of Ms. Briscoe is by the end, we will roots for the protagonist to discard her greed and regain her self worth. Mindful of pro athletes, fans will agree that Money Can't Buy Love, but also realize micro economics is a key factor in self esteem and long time relationships.

Author Missed The Mark!!

I am a fan of Connie Briscoe, however this time, "she missed the mark." This book is not only predictable, the road map is laid out in the beginning, and the reader simply has to keep asking..."can this woman really be this stupid??" I personally hate to see African-American women (or, any women for that matter)portrayed as "low self-esteemed, mindless, sex-crazed buffoons" but if that is what you are looking for, this book will not disappoint.

Tirone-Smith ( The Book of Phoebe ) makes that conflagration central to her new novel, a skillfully controlled, moving psychological exploration of secrets, traumas and family relationships. The narrator, Margie Potter, was only six months old on the day her mother took her to the circus; her mother perished, and Maggie herself bears livid scars on her back. Having spent her youth repressing her memories and burying herself in books, Margie marries an intense fireman, Charlie O'Neill, who is singularly obsessed with the fire and determined to find the arsonist whom he is certain set the blaze. Over the years Charlie becomes more and more compulsive about tracking down leads, emotionally distancing himself from Margie and their feisty daughter Martha. The clue to his obsessive dedication, and to the arsonist's identity, comes only when Margie begins to acknowledge her own complicity in his monomania. In matching her narrative tone with her heroine's lower-middle class diction and deliberate emotional restraint, the author risks a slow beginning in order to build suspense in subtle increments. She keeps the prose cool and spare, so that when harrowing details and jolting surprises gradually occur, the effect is potent. The final epiphany opens the narrative in an extraordinary way, forcing the reader to reassess everything. This daringly imagined novel adds a new dimension to an already impressive body of work.

Despite a somewhat predictable plot, this is a book with quiet appeal. Likable characters and good psychological insights make this fourth novel by the author of The Port of Missing Men (LJ 4/15/89) an appropriate choice for larger fiction collections.

Good story if you know nothing about the real events

I am a history buff, especially regarding clowns and circuses and I have long had an interest in what came to be know as "The Day the Clowns Cried", the circus fire in Hartford CT in 1944. As such I was really looking forward to reading this book. If the story had not claimed to be fiction that is based on fact, I'd have given it a great review. Unfortunately, the author does what several others (Lloyd Douglas, author of the Robe and The Big Fisherman, comes to mind) have done. She doesn't even care to get her facts straight. This is even more shocking considering she is actually from the town where the real fire took place.

Clown Emmett Kelly was not late; he was on his way to perform on schedule (he and another clown did a comedy routine while the Great Wallendas performed), not as the book suggests an act to keep the audience's attention away from the wild cats being removed from the ring. The entire big top was not coated with parrafin and gasoline, only the roof (although the stitching that held the tent together was easily flammable dry hemp). I could go on and on. My point is this. If you want an accurate picture of what really happened, read "The Circus Fire" by Stewart O'Nan. If you don't care about the historical accuracy and are simply looking for a good mystery book with a shock ending (also not remotely based on fact other than that experts today seem to agree the circus fire was arson), then by all means, enjoy the book. The author really is a good storyteller; she just doesn't care to get her facts straight and should probably steer clear of historical based fiction.

Mired in pseudo-psychological babble

I read this after reading Stewart O'Nan's vastly superior book, "The Circus Fire." Otherwise, the the novel that is the subject of this review would have made little sense.
The problem is that things just seem to happen willy nilly. The fireman casts aside a girl he's about to marry to take up with a scarred survivor of the circus fire. Why? Why was the first girl even introduced? And the novel just goes on from there.
Most irritating, perhaps, is the daughter, Martha, whose only reason for being seems to be to explain to the dumb reader the psychological workings beneath the surface. I got to the point that I just didn't care. Martha reminded me of Scarpatta's niece in a Patricia Cornwell thriller: smarmy, irritating, and ultimately a pain in the you know what.
The denouement of this novel is just too, too pat. Still, it's an improvement over the middle third of the book, which is where we are treated to all the pop psychology. Alas, this could have been so much better if it had been thought out better.

Unguessable ending to a riveting psychological thriller

This book springboards from the real-life fire 50 years ago that killed hundreds of people and destroyed the Ringling Bros. circus when it played in Hartford. One child survived, grew up and married a mysteriously solicitous fireman. This is the story, not only of their marriage, but of the secrets that, like one layer of an onion after another, peel off and reveal, finally, the unguessable ending. Walsh, professor of urology at Johns Hopkins University, and Worthington, a medical writer, offer a thorough guide to one of the most frightening diseases for men. Starting with an explanation of how the prostrate works surprisingly, it's not an essential organ Walsh then discusses why prostate cancer is prevalent in the U.S. and other developed Western countries, but not in Asia. He also detail the reasons men develop prostate cancer, including age, race, family history and diet. The book describes a variety of symptoms, some of which indicate ailments other than cancer, and what steps should be taken to get a proper diagnosis. Complete with diagrams and charts detailing the results of biopsy, the book provides an exceptionally complete (albeit worrisome, for squeamish readers) overview of the disease. Many of these details not taking aspirin prior to a biopsy, taking antibiotics ahead of time should obviously be included in the information doctors routinely provide to patients, but given the state of today's medical system, having such information available in this ready guide is useful and reassuring. Similarly comprehensive and easy-to-understand explanations are provided for surgical and other types of treatment, side effects, postsurgical complications and more, as well as a glossary of medical terms, along with a brief resource section. While people shouldn't use this book as a substitute for a medical check-up, it is one of the best all-inclusive books on this subject. All men and their loved ones battling or concerned about prostate cancer should read this book.

Review of "Surviving Prostate Cancer"

This is definitely a great source of information about prostate cancer and how to modify diet to minimize the effects of the malady. This basic approach should be common knowledge, perhaps more widely taught in schools, for all men around the world, of all ages, but unfortunately it is not. What I find most interesting is the various foods that can shrink prostate cancer cells, and should therefore be consumed regularly, such as broccoli, tomato paste, watermelon, and soy, and also foods that feed or cause growth in those cells, and therefore should be avoided, such as red meat and dairy fats. Although I have not finished the book, it is rapidly affecting my personal food preferences. I don't know for certain if I am accomplishing what I intend, but I get a pretty good sense of optimism from reading this book.

This is the second of four valuable volumes I purchased, in trying to get a handle on my diagnosis of prostate cancer.

This book, by one of the acknowledged leaders in prostate surgery, perhaps the "father of modern prostate cancer surgery," is packed full of facts and figures on all aspects of potential treatments yet encourages the patient to not limit himself to just it's reading in coming to a conclusion as to what treatment is right for him.

I consider this a valuable backup volumn to my first choice (Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book) and hardily encourage anyone diagnosed with prostate cancer to read, at the very least, both of these and perhaps even more information, before making up his mind as to a course of treatment.

Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer

This is one of the two best books I reviewed after my prostate cancer diagnosis. At the time the 2nd edition was not yet published. I recently reviewed the 2nd edition (published June 2007) and found it even better with more up to date info, findings, etc. I was operated on at Johns Hopkins (author Walsh is the immediate past chairman of the Urology Dept there) and was MOST impressed. No wonder Hopkins' Brady Center is #1 in Urology per US News. The other outstanding book I found on prostate cancer was Peter Scardino's Prostate Book: The Complete Guide to Overcoming Prostate Cancer, Prostatitis and BPH)(he's at Sloan-Kettering in NYC. It was published in 2005. I do not know when an update is coming for that book.
