Not Just a Homekeeping Book

This book is great! Fun for brousing through. It has a little of everything and would make a great gift for a bride or new home owner, or anyone who enjoys making home a cozy place. Based on Southern "receipt books" that Southern women kept after the civil war, this book covers everything from homemade, safe cleaning solutions to letter writing and etiquitte. Some of my favorite sections include "Mrs. Dunwoody's Essential Guide to Absolutely Delightful Parties", "Mrs. Dunwoody's List of Requirements for an Exceptional Spouse" and some great Southern recipes including "Captain Clemintine's Mint Julip" and "The Robert E. Lee Cake".
Chapter titles are: The Art of Homekeeping, The Cares of House and Home, Miss Sallie Anne's Splendid Directions for Laundry, Notes and Recipes from the Kitchen, The Art of Entertaining, Matters of Formality, Health and Beauty, Marriage and Family, The Garden, and Fill-In Pages-A Treasury of Memories.
I think my favorite thing about this book is the space at the end of each chapter for making your own notes. There's even a family tree to fill out, and a place to record births, deaths, marriages, etc., just like the old Bibles used to have. Lot's of cute, funny quotes too. For the price -you can't go wrong with this one!

A blast from the past...and a blast to read

Ok...I must admit, a book like Mrs Dunwoody is not usually up my alley, but when I took a look inside this one at the bookstore, I was compelled to keep reading. I stood next to shelf for almost an hour, completely lost in the amazing tips this book has to offer.
Written in the voice of a Victorian era southern matriarch, Mrs. Dunwoody's Excellent Instructions for Homekeeping is kind of an "everything" book. It's got it all: from household cleaning tips to etiquette to entertaining. Following the pattern of a traditional southern receipt book (an heirloom lifestyle guide), this book is less of a do's and don'ts manual and more of a glimpse into a bygone era where gentility ruled and respect was earned, not granted.
Whether you are looking for some time-tested housekeeping tips (like using tea to restore wood) or a fun flip through a century of southern wisdom, Mrs Dunwoody is your perfect guide.

I truly feel to gain a more '''LOGICAL''' viewpoint toward why?And The Question is Why? One must read everything concerning you as a Human Being. And Questions will be answered through the intellectual and not so much the emotional. Otherwise, there would surely be alot more depression and tradegy in both men and women. This book is such an enlightenment to women especially. Because we have a tendency to blame ourselves for our man's behavior. We as women can learn alot from this book because we can see we may be creating our own stories here. Yet at the same time we as women must not take full responsibility in having to always be everything to our men. To where we blame ourself for his behavior.This book is alot about men and their feelings of creating more than they can handle and not being able to figure it all out. So I think men should read this book. Sex is not always the issue here.Women need to read this book to keep their self-esteem intact and also realize our own reasons for entertaining and continuing relationships with men who choose to be complusive. Knowledge is power and we as humans have many tendencies but we also have brains.We can choose to Learn to Love through understanding why we do what we do???? Please read this book or just read books that will help us through life. Love is what touches us all. And if we can learn to love our mates and friends I think reading will help us gain more than money can buy. And P.S. keep us from losing our self-esteem and dignity. While organized under the rubric of the 10 Kabalistic Sefirot, "attributes at once of God and of Adam Kadmon or Divine Man, God's Image," Bloom's chosen figures are associated by his own brilliant (and sometimes jabbingly provocative) forms of attention, from a linkage of Dr. Johnson, Goethe and Freud to one of Dickens, Celan and Ellison (with a few others in between them). Bloom, a distinguished and often controversial literary critic and best-selling author of numerous books about literature (e.g., How To Read and Why), explores the concept of literary genius through the ages by examining 100 writers. Aside from such "must includes" as Shakespeare, Dante, Cervantes, Homer, Virgil, and Plato, Bloom offers some perhaps less well known to American readers, such as Lady Murasaki and Octavio Paz, acknowledging that his selections are idiosyncratic and were chosen because he wanted to write about certain authors, not because they were necessarily in "the top one hundred." In the introduction, Bloom posits a definition of genius that is fleshed out in his discussion of each writer. Authors are clustered into Lustres, or groups of five, while a brief introduction to each section explains why the writers in the section are associated with one another. (Each of the Lustres is based on one of the common names for the Kabbalistic Sefirot, which Bloom describes as representing God's creativity or genius.) Although the book is a delight to read, its real value lies in the author's ability to provoke the reader into thinking about literature, genius, and related topics. No similar work discusses literary genius in this way or covers this many writers. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

Bloom strictly profiles "geniuses of language"--poets, dramatists, novelists, philosophers, and religious writers--and, except for a core group that includes Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dante, Milton, and Tolstoy, has selected his 100 (all deceased, including the most contemporary: Octavio Paz, Ralph Ellison, Iris Murdoch) not because they're the top geniuses, but because their quests were in some measure cosmic, their language transcendent, and their lives intriguing. Literature is a spiritual calling for Bloom and his geniuses, so he has organized this bountiful volume according to the Kabbalah's 10 divine attributes or emanations, the Sefirot, which chart "the process of creation." Witty and erudite

Serious readers will imagine what fun it was for Bloom, compiling this celebration of (deceased) literary genius - reading and rereading, marveling at the passions, the artistry, and the jealousy and admiration they often felt for one another. Bloom, ("The Western Canon"), says his choices were "arbitrary." "These are certainly NOT `the top one hundred' in anyone's judgment, my own included. I wanted to write about these."
And write he does, with erudition, wit and verve. The most difficult thing about this book is the introduction, with its elaborate explanation of the book's structure, based on the Kabalistic "Sefirot," attributes of God and God's image, emanating out from an infinite center. Once embarked on the essays, Bloom's enthusiasm animates his scholarship. He begins with the "crown," five masters, "each of whom dominates his genre forever." These are Shakespeare, Cervantes, Montaigne, Milton and Tolstoy. The essays are short and tend to seize on one aspect, character or work to celebrate the whole. For Shakespeare it's Falstaff. "Does anyone else, in all of literature, enjoy what he is saying as much as Falstaff does?" And "All that Hamlet, Falstaff, and Cleopatra require of you is that you not bore them."
Bloom's writing is tart and barbed; he enjoys taking aim at his critics nearly as much as extolling his subjects. Perhaps it is partly to needle those who disdain his partiality for dead white males that he posits the Biblical writer J, or the Yahwist, (writer of parts of Genesis and Exodus) as a woman. He pokes fun at revisionists and deconstructionists, though he seldom wastes a full sentence on any of them. "In our increasingly virtual reality, three authors seem immune to the decline of authentic reading: Shakespeare, Austen, Dickens."
All three, says Bloom, share one profound gift: "personalities major and minor burst forth from the pages of these writers, in a profusion otherwise unmatched in the language." Personality is essential to Bloom, who has plenty of it himself, and his discussions of artists as varied as Milton and Hemingway, Dante and Tennessee Williams, George Eliot and Muhammad, Iris Murdoch and Mark Twain, are fired with their difficult personalities, and the personalities of their art, their place in their world, their yearnings, longings and demons. Bloom himself - enthusiastic, opinionated and authoritative - kindles the urge to read.

Or aspire to be one

Here's a fun, kind of humiliating, game to play along with friends: open the book to any page and read one sentence out loud; the first person to know something about one of the words or one of the people gets a point/drink/gold star, etc. Which makes Bloom's book sound slightly comical and merely a toy to be used during party games. It is an intense book and like Pound's "Cantos," you'll find yourself following an endless and exhausting maze of leads, references, languages, and what-not, all in the hopes of learning just a bit more about some of the thinkers showcased here. You may not read it cover to cover, and that's ok; it's a book to be savored and slightly scared of at the same time. Recommended, with caution.

Huh, What's That You Just Said?

I bought this book on impulse while shopping for something else because I thought it might illuminate me on which authors I would find interesting. I didn't follow my usual due diligence about book shopping. It is poetic justice, of a sort, that it proved a complete waste of $. I'd love to have that money back to buy something worthwile.
Bloom's writing style is impossible to read, and his ruminations on why so-in-so did such-and-such are boring. I repeatedly caught myself reading while my mind was wandering on other thoughts completely unrelated to the subject at hand.
I find his explanation for why he would have chosen these one hundred authors to write about strange. He says that he didn't choose these because they are the top one hundred in his or anyone else's judgement, but that he wrote about them because he "...wanted to write about these." Huh, what's that you just said? That's a brilliant explanation from someone who can write pages about what one character said to another on page 143 of a particular book.
I also found the organization of the book clumsy. The grouping of authors into groups of ten, and then into to subgroups of five had no meaning, as Bloom readily acknowledges. But wouldn't the book, read by many for instructional purposes as in my case, have benefited from some literary-oriented or historically-oriented arrangement rather than these odd groupings?
My only hope now is that I can unload this pile of paper at Half Price Books and reclaim a portion of what I wasted.

Hard as she tried, her relationships didn’t last, foundering over serious issues such as alcoholism or fear of commitment. It’s not for lack of her trying. She even took off work to create an Italian-influenced seder for a Jewish suitor. The recipes are mostly Italian, and the men are mostly losers, but listeners will have a good time laughing with Melucci at her various boyfriends' foibles (even as they wonder why such a smart and funny woman chooses the same type of childish man over and over). Melucci does a wonderful job narrating; her voice carries the listener through the first flush of new romance to the final indignities of a relationship gone wrong. The audio format does not work well for the recipes, however; listeners eager to cook these fabulous meals should get a copy of the print version to keep from rewinding the audio book repeatedly while jotting down recipes. Food, Fun, and Broken Relationships

This book was just what I expected ... a playful, humorous look at life in New York City (food, men and career ... what else is there?). For someone like me, an ordinary, Midwestern, middle-age wife and mother, this was an amazing journey into the literary life and escapades of someone in a far different place than where I am.

That said I can also admit that I've done my share of cooking my way into a man's heart (both in my single days and later as a wife). Like Giulia Melucci, fine food and romance are what I love most. Rather than judge her as did several other reviewers, I enjoyed her boyfriend tales dotted with recipes like treasure hidden in the forest.

Most cookbooks follow the same boring format ... introductory chapter, recipe, recipe, recipe. If you're looking for a cookbook, this isn't it. This is a tale of love, found and lost, intermingled with easy-to-make fabulous, mostly Mediterranean recipes. For a light-hearted read and a look into a life perhaps very different from your own, this book's the one. Buy it, love it, and share it!

Recipes and humor with a timeline of men who give too little and the girl that just keeps giving her all.

If you can relate to reaching a man's heart through his stomach, can accept that Giulia's memoirs are just that.. her memoirs... and you enjoy eavesdropping on a little light hearted, funny story telling this would be a fun read for you. There are some good laughs, great recipes and even occassions to sigh and roll your eyes on her behalf.

Giulia tells the story of her search to find someone special to share her life with in Brooklyn. She's a smart, PR Exec, working in the city in fashion media. Seemingly she has it all together. She then shares the details of the men she's chased after and the ultimate failures of those relationships and you realize... even a girl who "has it all" sometime's doesn't.

She is funny and writes like she's telling her story to friends over lunch. If she were my friend though, I would have grabbed her by the shoulders and said.... "Girl, if he's not that into you and if you have to grow on each other like mold, let him go! Don't chase him! You deserve sooo much better."

I found it to be a good, easy and fun read.

Wife to Bishop T.D. Jakes, the well-known evangelical author and pastor, Serita Ann Jakes takes up her pen to encourage, counsel and instruct Christian women about successfully relating to men. From her vantage point as a daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, Jakes notes that from childhood on, women are formed and molded in great measure by their male counterparts. In a sometimes trite manner, Jakes hands out simple, perhaps simplistic, advice on making wise choices in dating, courtship and marriage. She offers opinions on such topics as handling the stresses of child-rearing, coping with insecurity and discontentment, caring for one's needs without becoming self-absorbed and developing a positive and godly view of sex. While heartfelt and sincere, many of Jakes's chapters, sprinkled with personal recollections and biblical anecdotes, feel lightweight and stale. Very little of her advice is presented in a novel manner, and the book has a disorganized feel. Commenting on the profound impact mothers have on their children, Jakes tells her Christian sisters to refrain from resorting to manipulation in their married relationships, certainly not a new idea, and not quite in keeping with the chapter. Despite this self-help manual's weaknesses, fans of the Jakes clan will assuredly find some measure of hope and help within its pages; if nothing else, interested readers will appreciate the personal stories from Jakes's own life.

A Mature Perspective

First Lady has done a wonderful job in this book by helping us to discover the root to how we view and relate to men. She truly speaks to the heart of many single women through her candid acknowledgement of the fact that our desires for husbands are real and should not be dismissed by spiritual hogwash. She discusses how single ladies can be content in who they are, but not necessarily satisfied with not being married and validates these feelings. She anihilates the logic that many single women have been taught about needing to be more spiritual as a response to their desires for a mate. I praise God that she stepped up and addressed this issue. However, she discusses the full cycle of relationships from the single woman to the married woman, who must learn to adjust to different seasons that occur in marriage. The end of the chapter questions are excellent follow-ups to drive home the points that she discusses in each chapter. It's like getting the book and the workbook in one package. This book was certainly written by a full grown woman and provided a very weighty perspective on how we should relate to men as Godly women and it is very practical and realistic. A good companion book for this one is "The Power of Femininity" by Michelle McKinney Hammond. Between the two of them, they leave no stones unturned.

This book is a winner

It's a whole new world. Christian Dresner is a former German captive during WWII who was forced to help the Nazis perform horrific experiments on human beings in an effort to create the "perfect athlete." After his escape, he has seemingly dedicated his life to improving man's lives by creating remarkable vaccines to wipe out diseases and incredible prosthetics for amputees. Now he has created the Merge, an electronic device that allows users to control their Internet actions with their thoughts and can access web pages almost instantly. Incredibly sophisticated Apps are being developed all the time to work with the Merge units.

The unit is small and can clip onto your belt. Users must either wear a headset, which is bulky and cumbersome, or have small metal studs implanted in the skull just behind the ears to activate it. The added bonus of the studs provides a sleep function that rivals any pill or other sleeping aid, and it also corrects vision problems. Units are selling like hotcakes, and the majority of users are opting for the studs. When the studs are used, each Merge is made to adapt to only one user's brainwaves, making that Merge virtually useless by any other user and largely eliminating the temptation to steal someone else's unit.

There's a Merge version for civilians, as well as a much more advanced one for the military. Dresner made a deal to sell the units exclusively to the US Military, but other countries are trying to get them as well. The military-style Merges give soldiers unprecedented advantages on the battlefield with their high level of technical sophistication. An opposing soldier without a Merge becomes a non-threat; a soldier armed only with the civilian version isn't much of a problem either when up against the Military Merge.

Sounds like a Utopia, doesn't it? Of course, it's not. Dresner has marketed the Merges as totally safe for human use. But there are some things he isn't revealing to anyone, not even to those he hired to help him make the units work. These are secrets that only he knows --- and that could be deadly.

Robert Ludlum was a prolific author and writer of thriller novels before his death in 2001. He had started, but not finished, his Jason Bourne series, three installments of which were completed after his death, written with notes he had left behind. The titles in the Covert One series also were supposedly based on more unwritten material that was discovered after Ludlum's passing. THE UTOPIA EXPERIMENT is the 10th volume and is written by Kyle Mills, only one of several writers who have contributed to this series.

I haven't read any of the previous installments, so I was not familiar with the characters, but there was enough back story written into the text to give me a feel for who they are and how they fit into the picture. I didn't feel as if I needed to read all the prior books in the series to understand what was going on.

For the most part, THE UTOPIA EXPERIMENT is well-written, though Mills tends to overuse the phrase "If the truth be told." Still, this book is a winner, especially if you like thrillers (which I do) and are a Robert Ludlum fan (which I am). With today's already advanced technology, coupled with the realization that there might be someone smart enough (as well as sinister enough) to make something like this work, it's enough to make you wonder about the future of the human race.

Mills is back with "one"

I haven't read the Covert One series for a while (since Gayle Lynds) and am not really a fan of this faction of the adventure genre. But I am a huge Kyle Mills fan so I had to pick it up.

And I'm glad I did!

Even though a series, this book could easily be a standalone, which is I suppose, the idea of Covert One of late. I understand the necessity for Ludlum's name being on the cover for commercial reasons, but really, Mills could have pulled this off without the help. Change the names of the main characters and you would have a great, modern-day thriller.

I loved the in-depth technology info but Mills is known for that. The book is fast paced, full of action (as the genre demands) but is by no means pure adventure. There is a great plot, a supurb premise (which would make most Bible-thumpers panic in their boots with its resemblance to 666 theories), and decently broad characters.

A Steve Jobs-like entrepreneur has developed the next stage of computing called "The Merge" which is a small ipod-size computer that fits in your pocket but is merged with your mind via either a headset or a tiny implant. The owner experiences an HUD in their vision with icons for software on either side of your visual screen. But the inventor has added a few lines of code that no one understands. What's it for?

Meanwhile, the entire world, including the military, have embraced the technology by the millions. Something nags though. What is that extra code for? When John Smith and his team find out the devestating purpose of the code, it's a race against time to save the world.... or at least 9 million people living in it.

The book is long (especially the audible version-13 hours) and it lagged a little but for the most part, the plausibility of the technology and constant action scenes kept it interesting. If Mills writes more of these, I'll buy them.

Files's attempt at a Waiting to Exhale is an amusingly superficial but mainly unrealistic sequel to her first book, Scenes from a Sistah, about the same couple of flawlessly beautiful good-time "ghetto" girls living it up in New York City. "Corporate bigwig" Misty Fine has become romantically involved with and ultimately engaged to her boss, Rick, leaving her best "sistah," dancer Reesy Snowden, resentful and wondering what she wants for her own life. Reesy lands the lead in Black Barry's Pie, an off-Broadway musical, and her fantastically successful stage career is launched. Reesy's narration leans heavily on urban slang, which becomes tiresome. Her escapades are entertaining, though outrageously inconceivable, as she hops from one fine lover to another (apparently heedless of AIDS), receives the gift of a Porsche from a boyfriend and even drunkenly flirts with Wesley Snipes?who just happens to be eating at the same restaurant. Reesy's relentlessly silly chatter reveals her as little more than shallow and mean-spirited: though Misty "was always complaining that she didn't have the high, round sistah booty I'd been strapped with, it apparently never stopped her from getting any play." The result is a perfunctory performance clearly angling for the movies. Author tour.

EXCELLENT

One of the worst things about writing a sequel is the author MUST make it as good as if not better than the first one. Ms. Files passed the test. I was happy that Reesy was our potaganist this time around and we were allowed to get into this WILD girl's head. At times I felt she was acting like a 22 year old rather than a 32 year old, but I was impressed with her development throughout the book. Inside her tough as nails "hand in your face" sister-girl deameanor, she was a very emotional and sensitive person. I literally cried tears with her as she discovered a love lost. Ms. Files did an EXCELLENT descriptive job of putting Reesy in touch with her feelings. There's not a woman out there who can't relate to this type of love and pain. It was emotionally real.
We saw a different side of Misty in this story as well. Her character wasn't quite as developed as Reesy's, but her maturity was evident.
I loved the way Ms. Files ended the book on a closed note, not leaving the readers looking for more. EXCELLENT is all I can say.

FUNNY, LAUGH OUT LOUD BUT IMPRACTIBLE ENDING

I thought this book was absolutely hilarious.The characters actually reminded me of some "sistah" girlfriends that I have. In that respect, it was pretty realistic and authentic. From a practical standpoint however, I thought the ending was somewhat impractical. The basis of the relationship between Dandre and Neesy ( from her perspective at least) was one based on deception, manipulation and revenge. Based on her behavior with Helmut, there was no reason for Dandre to trust Reesy again. In real life, she would have been SOL! The most poignant line in the book was when Dandre says to Neesy " I'm saddened by the fact that I believed in something that was never really there. I hate to think that a part of me that was once very trusting and very much alive will never be that way again". I think the ending would have been better and more realistic if it had been consistent with the above statement.

Got to the good part... it was worth the wait!

She's back... "Reesy" Snowden narrates this sequel to "Scenes from a Sistah". She tells a much more colorful and drama-filled story than you could imagine. It felt like I was watching an R-rated film with lots of suspense, romance and drama. The sistahs and brothas are fun and full of entertainment.
I enjoyed this novel even more than "Scenes..." because Reesy tells a more exciting story! She is full of laughs and imagery. Although the language was often too vulgar, I was able to accept it as part of her racy, risque, and raw character. Nevertheless, I loved Reesy even more for opening her heart and her mouth to give of herself even when it hurt.
This is a good read about good friends who endure much love, pain, and ultimate joy!
