From Booklist
These stark black-and-white images outdo color TV footage in their capacity to shock. Taken during the 1992-93 war, some became instantly famous--for instance, the one of two brothers grief-stricken at the death of a third brother. Each frame, however professionally composed--and they all are--is quite grim. Burning buildings, rows of graves, and blood-spattered sidewalks record the result of Bosnia's foiled bid to regain an independence the province hasn't had since the foureenth century. Doleful excerpts from American reporters' stories face the images, completing the blank pessimism that Sarajevo's suffering engenders. A well-produced book with an unforgettable message; a suitable match for libraries holding the best-selling Zlata's Diary. Gilbert Taylor

I like the fact that this book is an original and not a reprint. It provided me with a more detail view of what happened in Sarajevo when most of the world was not noticing or not much concerned. Its sad to read and its sad to see the photographs, which are many showing the people in a desperate time in history. If you have any interests in what happen during the siege of Sarajevo this book you should consider purchasing.

This book is meant for sick minds. Why would anybody write about children being raped, horrendous murders and try to pass it off as a romantic thriller? I would not reccomend this to anyone!

The Richest Man in Town: The Twelve Commandments of Wealth, by W. Randall Jones

Secretly, if not overtly, almost everyone in America desires to become rich: to make it big, to enjoy the fruits of the most successful life imaginable. But unfortunately, most of us don't have a clue how to reach these all too elusive goals. Quite simply, there's no definitive road map for getting there, no proven plan, and certainly very little access to those who have become "the richest man in town."

But now W. Randall Jones, the founder of Worth magazine, is about to change all that. He's traveled to one hundred different towns and cities across the country and interviewed the wealthiest resident in each. No, these are not those folks who inherited their wealth, or happen to be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Rather, these are the self-made types who, through hard work and ingenuity, found their own individual paths to financial success.

Remarkably, during his research, Jones found that these successful people were not so different from one another. They all shared many of the same traits and followed what the author calls the Twelve Commandments of Wealth: stay hungry (even when you're successful) . . . you really do learn more from failing than you may think . . . absolutely be your own boss, the sooner the better . . . understand that selling is the key to success . . . where you live doesn't matter . . . never retire, and other, more surprising revelations.

Practical, unique, and inspiring, this book lets you peek inside the living rooms of dozens of America's most successful people-and shows how you, too, can become THE RICHEST MAN IN TOWN.

From Publishers Weekly
In this smug paean to extreme wealth, Jones, founder of Worth magazine, identifies the Richest Man in Town in 100 American cities and towns, and gathers their secrets of success. The profiled RMITs range from household names like Bill Gates to the lesser-known Fred DeLuca, founder of Subway; Bob Stiller, founder of Green Mountain Coffee; and Jorge Perez, real estate mogul and most successful Latino man in the country. The collected advice is organized as 12 hackneyed commandments: find your passion, be your own boss, say yes to sales and work through obstacles, with small examples throughout. Given the paucity of usable advice, it's hard to imagine who the audience would be for a book compiling the mantras of a group of people whose average net worth is $3.5 billion. This book might inspire some readers to go forth and live the American dream—as Jones points out, fully 90% of all wealth in America today is first-generation wealth, and all the subjects in the book are self-made—if they can endure the self-congratulatory tone. About the Author
Randall Jones has spent 25 years in the magazine and media business. He is the founder of Worth magazine, the financial lifestyle magazine for active wealthy investors, and is also the founder of The American Benefactor magazine, the first magazine about philanthropy from the donor's perspective. He was recently honored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America as "Philanthropist of the Year."

From AudioFile
Randall Jones talked to 100 of the richest self-made men in various towns in America (the RMITs). He found out what they have in common and turned that into 12 commandments. If you grasp these 12 concepts and apply them in your life, he says, you can break out of the "salary trap" and eventually hurtle past the 100-million-dollar mark (the minimum RMIT bankroll). With his folksy cadence and avuncular tone, Jones steers the narration convincingly. Unfortunately, though, his whole pitch seems out of date. And the key concepts are unremarkable--work hard, start early, and be ambitious. Perhaps it might be more realistic to shoot for being THE MILLIONAIRE NEXT DOOR instead of aiming for a club whose average net worth is 3.5 billion. R.W.S. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Informative Motivational Book
By LegalBeagle
According to The Richest Man In Town by W. Randall Jones, Stephen Bisciotti is the richest man in my hometown. Do you know who is the richest man in your hometown? If you have ever wondered you can probably discover him in Jones' new book. In addition to listing the local Donald Trumps The Richest Man In Town attempts to answer how they became so successful.

To that end Jones interviews many of the richest men, from both large and small towns, to discern the twelve commandments of wealth:
-- Seek Money for Money's Sake and Ye Shall Not Find
-- Find Your Perfect Pitch
-- Be Your Own Boss
-- Get Addicted to Ambition
-- Wake Up Early--Be Early
-- Don't Set Goals - Execute or Get Executed
-- Fail to Succeed
-- Location Doesn't Matter
-- Moor Yourself to Morals
-- Say Yes To Sales
-- Borrow from the Best - and the Worst
-- Never Retire
Many above the commandments are counter-intuitive and it was interesting to read how taking the proverbial road not taken led to their success. I also enjoyed the vignettes of various wealthy men. For example, I learned that Dell Computer wasn't Michael Dell's first business. Rather he started at age twelve by selling stamps on consignment and made $2,000! Not many twelve year olds have that drive or success. The Richest Man In Town is filled with other equally awe-inspiring stories.

As in everything in life, there is a downside to being the richest man in town. For instance, Leroy Landhuis, the richest man in Colorado Springs, confesses, "I have not been successful in my personal life the way I would have liked to be. My marriage wasn't successful and at times, I have been much too occupied with business." Such candid admissions, however, are few in far between in The Richest Man In Town.

It is clear that Jones is enamored with his subjects. In fact, he admits, "as hard as I tried to be a totally dispassionate journalistic observer of these big buck creators, I found that a very, difficult, near impossible task." A little journalistic distant, however, might have led to more insights and made a more balanced view. Still if you are curious as to what it is like to cruise down the yellow brick road of success then The Richest Man In Town provides a front row seat!

100 millionaires tell you how to get rich --- why not listen?
By Jesse Kornbluth
Have you noticed that almost no one ever seems to ask the rich about the subject they know best?

No, on the "Fiddler on the Roof" theory --- "When you're rich, they think you really know" --- the rich get to sound off on all manner of topics outside their expertise. We're regularly served their views on inheritance taxes, wars, medical research and the arts. What's harder to ferret out: what they know about becoming and staying rich.

Randy Jones --- W. Randall Jones to you, but I once worked for him when he was the publisher (and founder) of Worth Magazine --- got interested in money when he was a kid in Georgia. As far as I can tell, he has amassed piles of it. In addition to the duplex in Manhattan, there's a house in Westchester. I doubt his kids have ever been shamed by clothes from The Gap. And his wife needed an operation on her earlobes a while back, thanks to decades of wearing earrings encrusted with massive diamonds. (No. Not really. But you get the idea.)

A few years ago, Jones decided to write a book about his favorite obsession: how you make money. In 'The Richest Man in Town: The Twelve Commandments of Wealth', he crisscrosses America to interview a slew of self-made millionaires. (Actually, the poorest of the people he interviews has at least $100 million.) Then he divides their knowledge into buckets --- "the twelve commandments of wealth".

It's a simple structure. It's a simple book. There's almost nothing here that you haven't read, heard or thought before.

So why aren't you rich rich rich?

For one thing, you may be confused. "It's good to be rich" is not the same as "Greed is good", but because so many of the visible rich are selfish bastards who would greatly benefit from a stunning increase in the tax rate, it's easy to think that wealth and bad values go hand in hand. "Yeah, I'll have no money worries if I get rich," you think. "But I'll also be a jerk."

Not so, Jones says. Wealth is the byproduct of worthy activity. It's what happens when you perform a useful service or make a decent product, then market it aggressively and treat customers decently. It's about Right Livelihood, not pursuit of money. Sharks may score big for a while, say Jones and his interviewees, but over the long haul it's the good people who win biggest.

And good people don't put "success" and "wealth" in the same sentence. They measure success by satisfaction: their pleasure in the enterprise they've created, in the work they do each day, in their families and their causes. The high life in the big city? Most shudder at the prospect --- they're still living in their hometowns.

Each chapter in "The Richest Man in Town" is peppered with anecdotes, and they serve that chapter's commandment. Don't work for other people. Trust yourself. Be obsessive. (Robert Stiller sold his first company --- he made EZ Wider "cigarette" papers --- and started Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, which required him to use every dollar he ever made and go out to sell the product himself.) Early work experience gives you a solid work ethic. (Your kid is 14 and still going to summer camp?) Education matters; Harvard doesn't. Take care of your health.

A lot of kids will be given this book for graduation, birthdays and holidays. Good. They'll get something out of it. And so will Randy Jones, who not only has made a very good product here but made very sure I got a copy.

Synopsis:

W. Randall Jones, founder of Worth Magazine, identified and interviewed the Richest Man in Towns (RMITs) in one hundred American towns and cities. Jones selected self-made types who found their own paths to success through hard work and their creativity. While members of this select group span a range of companies and industries, they share certain traits. Jones calls these traits the Twelve Commandments of Wealth.

Here are the first few:

1. Seek Money for Money's Sake and Ye Shall Not Find.
- Wealth comes from a contribution of real value

2. Find your perfect pitch
- Know your own unique strengths and talents and match them with your personal passion.

3. BYOB: Be your own boss
- Don't work for someone else, found your own enterprise. Choose partners carefully - only those who bring something critical to your success.

The bulk of the book is devoted to describing these Twelve Commandments of Wealth and sharing how successful men demonstrated these traits. Anecdotes come from a diverse group of successful folk. Here are just a few: Michael Dell, Stephen King, Sam Zell, Fred Smith, Carl Icahn, John McAfee, Bill Gates, Sergey Brin, and Larry Ellison.

Aside from describing the traits, Jones offers exercises to help us find our strengths and individual paths to wealth. For instance, when describing the need to look for more than money, he suggests writing your own obituary to visualize your lifetime goals.

Review:

I found The Richest Man in Town: the Twelve Commandments of Wealth to be an interesting and absorbing read largely because of the wealth of stories shared by his sources.

Some of the quotes are particularly memorable and here are a few that I can't resist sharing:

"I always tell young people there is no substitute for hard work and diligence. It takes eight hours a day of hard work to be a success, but it takes most people twelve or thirteen hours a day to do eight hours of good work."
- Joe Taylor, former CEO of Southland Log Homes and secretary of commerce for SC

"Everyone should have at least one silent goal. This is a goal that is known only by you. It's a reach goal, one that is extremely hard to attain, but potentially life altering, even world changing. These kinds of world-changing golas are realized by only very few people. If you don't reach them, you certainly won't be judged by others-it's your well-kept personal secret."
-Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., co-founder of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the largest for-profit hospital management company

As I read, my copy slowly filled up with post-it tabs and notes. I highly recommend the book for those interested in business books and personal finance and for their loved ones who might need personal finance tips.

THE RULES DO WORK!!!
By J. Hill
I had the first book for years. Read it sporatically, then came upon a guy that I liked. Didn't use the rules: gave him my number, called him, was always around him__and another woman got a date with this guy. OK. Had I NOT given him my number, i'd not be feeling sorry for myself now. He'd have gone on to his destiny. THE MORAL: THIS IS A MANS WORLD: a man is going to be where he wants to be. If he isn't feeling you, all the calls, tears, all of the "dirt" that women do is not going to change things. IF you read the first 3 chapters of the Bible, it tells you that man was designed to be the leader and was punished and thrown out of Eden for not following THE RULES. All of the men that say they like a woman to make the first move are conning you and are weak. They like it for awhile, but will get bored. And that is why they move on. Let them fill in those blank moments that you used to. Let them have those women who like to dominate. Let the weak go with the weak. You want a man to do all of those things that they should. NOTHING is guaranteed__but you will come away with better SELF ESTEEM. That is what makes this book so unique. You aren't beating up on yourself if that man doesn't call or notice you! THATS WHAT YOU WANT!! If he is feeling you, he will come to you. MEN do like challenges! That is what THEY were created for. Thats why they love sports, action__They are external creatures: their package is on the outside of their body. We women are internal creatures: our package is on the inside making us more emotional. MR. RIGHT is there. If it takes awhile, its not your fault! Get busy! Get a life!

oh boy ...
By FARSWE
Silly!
Now having said that, as long as you don't take everything too seriously and to the overboard, the book is actually based on common sense! I was reading it and trying to really UNDERSTAND what the author meant, and to me it sounded like advice girlfriends give each other on daily basis. It just should have been titled differently, and less serious than "RULES"!!
It's not scientific, it's not RULES to always live by, but it is, as I said earlier, BASED ON common sense.

Basic and fundamental, yes, but surprisingly thought-provoking and informative
By Robert Morris
What we have in this easy-to-dismiss book (because of its cutesy title and unorthodox shape) is a collection of remarkably interesting, in some instances valuable insights or explanations provided by the co-authors, Michael W. Preis and Matthew Frederick, who presumably learned more than 101 "things" (a useless word when you think about it) within and beyond a business school community. Preis and Frederick stick to business basics with this approach: following an assertion ("X is...." or "Y is not necessarily...."), they provide a brief but insightful delineation that corrects or modifies a misconception. For example:

"Not all capital is economic." (#5)

"A mission or vision statement that is impossible to disagree with might not be saying much of significance." (#15)

"Cannibalize your own sales." (#27)

"Profitable, fast growing companies can be chronically short of cash." (#38)

"Promoting the best performer to manager is often a mistake." (#67)

"Sacrifice the trivial few for the vital many." (#77)

"Obsolete does not always mean useless." (#81)

After each of these and the other 94 "things," Preis and Frederick offer a brief explanation of the given assertion's significance. None offers a head-snapping revelation but together, throughout the sequence in which they are presented, the "nuggets" provide a thought-provoking and informative briefing on key business concepts, issues, and concerns.

I urge those who share my high regard for this book to check out these, listed in alpha order:

Unique and Memorable statements in book
By Omar
I perused this book in a Barnes & Noble. I read up to the 70th point. I don't have time for a full on review but I just wanted to inform potential readers that it is in fact an excellent resource especially for people who are into business and entrepreneurs.

I was worried that too many statements would've been too plain or general, albeit some were, most were very interesting things to note.

I'm going to look up on my iPad if there's an ebook version.

Great read

Business 101 and much more
By Daniel Estes
This book is an excellent primer if you, like me, wished you had taken a Business 101 course but never got around to it. It is part conventional wisdom and part how to adapt to an ever-changing world.

Right from the start, the most startling realization is that the term "business" is simply a collection of many interconnected subjects such as accounting, marketing, finance, organizational behavior, etc.

Some of my favorite bits of wisdom include: There's a trolley every 15 minutes. (i.e. It's better to wait for a good business opportunity than to invest your time and money in a bad one out of fear.) People buy copy machines because they need copies, not because they want a copy machine. (i.e. People buy things to solve problems so sales should primarily address the problem and not the product.) Hire your own boss. (i.e. Being good at a particular task rarely means you'd be good at managing a group performing the same task.)

The best advice is probably "If you want to be a good leader, you must be a good reader." This statement attests to the ever-important skill of adaptability and ongoing education.

Review
"We want people to receive healing in every area of life--spiritually, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially, and socially. Our goal is to see people enjoy wholeness."

About the Author
JOYCE MEYER has been teaching the Word of God since 1976 and in full-time ministry since 1980. Previously an associate pastor at Life Christian Church in St. Louis, Missouri, she developed, coordinated, and taught a weekly meeting known as "Life In The Word." After more than five years, the Lord brought it to a conclusion, directing her to establish her own ministry and call it "Life In The Word, Inc."

Now, her Life In The Word radio and television broadcasts are seen and heard by millions across the United States and throughout the world. Joyce's teaching tapes are enjoyed internationally, and she travels extensively conducting Life In The Word conferences.

Joyce and her husband, Dave, the business administrator at Life In The Word, have been married for over 35 years. They reside in St. Louis, Missouri, and are the parents of four children. All four children are married and, along with their spouses, work with Dave and Joyce in the ministry.

Believing the call on her life is to establish believers in God's Word, Joyce says, "Jesus died to set the captives free, and far too many Christians have little or no victory in their daily lives." Finding herself in the same situation many years ago and having found freedom to live in victory through applying God's Word, Joyce goes equipped to set captives free and to exchange ashes for beauty. She believes that every person who walks in victory leads many others into victory. Her life is transparent, and her teachings are practical and can be applied in everyday life.

Joyce has taught on emotional healing and related subjects in meetings all over the country, helping multiplied thousands. She has recorded more than 230 different audio-cassette albums and over 75 videos. She has also authored 49 books to help the body of Christ on various topics.

SPIRITUAL THERAPY
By H
I had been watching Joyce Meyer on television for many years. Her background of abuse and emotional turmoil was something that drew me to her. Emotionally, I had no connections.
Not long ago I was in a season of emotional winter. Everything looked dark, cold and dreary. I had confessed many scriptures, read many books, but could not shake off my winter of discontent. I hate to admit it- but I was depressed. During this season I joined a book club and "Managing Your Emotions" was one of the books I selected.
When it arrived I was a little hesitant to open it because I did not know how it was going to challenge me. I started reading it and I was able to identify with some destructive cycles that I was going around in. I was always getting my feelings hurt, feeling rejected, feeling alone and unwanted. Joyce went through those cycles especially in dealing with her husband, Dave. As I read the book I started to realize that if she overcame all of those things then I could too.
There was no quick fix but she had to get in the word of God and start to believe what God said about her. She believed that God loved her and that he had good plans for her. She had to confess the scriptures daily and over a period of time she learned how to manage or take control over her feelings.
One thing that she mentioned in her book that was extremely powerful for me was the fact that God gave us these emotions but we needed to know when to express them. I learned that I could get angry, only I should not stay in anger because it produces bitterness. This book really helped me and reading it was like a therapy session.
Everyone who is breathing, has friends, families, children, co-workers etc. can benefit from reading this book. It might not be for you but it can help you to help someone else. It is information we all can use. (1-26-2004)

Wow! What an inspiration!
By eturley@our-town.com Jeannine Turley
Emotions, what a powerful tool God has equiped us with. I find myself reading a portion of the book and then going back and re-reading it, because of how it has spoken to me.
I am reminded of an illustration she uses in the first part of the book talking about emotions and how messed up they can be. She talks about different sizes, shapes, and colors of shoe strings and how they are all knotted together. She further tells how you don't just straighten them out all at once, it is a process of untangling the strings, one-at-a-time. How clever! Our emotions do get all tangled and knotted, and we think we can just fix them all at once. Not so!
I pray that you will read this and realize, as I have, that God gave us emotions and we are to hand them over to Him and let him teach us how to manage them as he originally had planned.

Awesome, Clear Teaching On Learning Self Control!
By A Customer
Joyce Meyer is an amazing, annointed teacher whose casual style and relatability is so attractive.
This book, like all her teaching, is written as if you were sitting in the room with her having a chat. She tells it like it is and teachs from God's Word with principles to manage your emotions as Jesus did.
If you ever get depressed or angry or sad or frustrated when you don't want to - Joyce will set you straight and help you live a life controlled by the Spirit and not your emotions.

The Engine 2 Diet: A Major Gem for Changing your Lifestyle & Getting Healthy
By NC
In this book review of "The Engine 2 Diet," I'll describe both my experience of the book itself and then my personal experience being on the diet for the past 3 weeks. Rather than call the Engine 2, a "diet," I'd prefer to call it a "lifestyle" with a major focus on dietary change. When you see the word "diet," you may immediately think of giving up quantity and giving up foods you are attached to. This is absolutely not the case with the Engine 2 diet. With this dietary plan, you can eat as much of the foods on the plan as you want to eat (with a few logical exceptions) and the foods you eat will taste wonderful. One thing for sure with this Engine 2 Diet, I always feel satisfied and don't have any cravings for foods---this was completely unexpected and surprising.

The book itself is very easy to read and follow. The book is divided into 3 major sections, (1) His philosophy of the Engine 2 Diet with the author's own story and background; brief citing and review of the medical and research studies documenting the health benefits with this diet; exploration of the myths about food and following a vegan diet; blood markers; and a brief review of exercise benefits and necessity with the diet. (2) How the Diet Works-the 28 day plan easily explained and described; how to seriously and deeply understand labels on all food products (this chapter is outstanding); and overall how to make this diet work to improve your life; (3) Recipes, meal plans, preparing your kitchen before starting the diet and how to shop for specific foods-brands to buy, foods to reject, ingredients to keep on hand, etc.

His reasoning and explanation for the diet are clearly explained. The health benefits are outlined and are numerous. The chapter on how to read labels is outstanding. You learn precisely what ingredients to avoid and how to properly shop for foods. You'll feel smarter than 99% of the population just after memorizing this one chapter. The recipes are easy to prepare, even for a novice cook such as myself. They taste great and are very satisfying. His website is excellent and adds an additional layer of organization to your menu-making and shopping lists.

I have been on this diet for the past 3 weeks and I have never felt better in my life (47 yrs). I started the diet for several personal reasons: (1) My cholesterol has gradually gone up above normal levels over the past 8 years and my physician wanted me to start Statin drugs. This was a major wake-up call because I don't want to be on a drug regimen for something I can control with diet. That's a HUGE POINT with this book---I am taking back control of my body and my health through the most basic empowering action--what foods I eat. The book stresses this aspect, how nutrition is at the root of health and disease. (2) I had gained about 10 lbs and wanted to get rid of excess weight. (3) (He does not discuss this point) I philosophically prefer not to eat animal products due to my love of the animal kingdom and wanting to reduce my energy demands on the environment. (4) I want to prevent the possibility of having cardiovascular disease, diabetes, memory loss, stroke, cancer, etc. as I get deeper into middle age. (5) I want more energy and want to feel better overall. (6) I suffer from some food allergies (including lactose and eggs).

MY EXPERIENCE TO DATE: I love this diet. The recipes are easy to make, and follow. I have not cooked much before this diet, so this statement is coming from a man with little cooking experience. The food tastes great and he has the right seasonings and flavors combined. I NEVER go hungry, I NEVER have cravings, I don't miss the meat, dairy or eggs or oils. I have more variety in my daily menu than I used to have. Even during the first few days, I felt great. My blood sugar feels much more balanced and I don't experience the high and low energy spikes that I used to. I don't crave sugar or more food at night like I used to. I have more mental and physical energy.

I was amazed that I did not need oil to make pancakes and I did not need eggs to make spectacular french toast! I still can't believe how much sodium (salt) is in so many foods and that I don't need it to make the food taste good. I used to add salt to everything...I stopped that cold turkey with the Engine 2 Diet and I don't miss the salt. The reason is that the recipes have many other herbs and spices to take up where the salt was before. The flavors are wonderful. Aside from eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables daily (adding a lot of fiber to the diet), his Lasagna, Pad Thai, Big Bowl breakfast, Black Bean Extravaganza, & Chili are my favorites so far. There are many recipes to choose from, so you won't get bored.

My colon feels a lot cleaner and I feel lighter. I lost 5 lbs. and my entire digestive system runs much better with no distress. In fact, I feel so much better mentally and physically that it is hard to imagine not eating this way. I never expected this to happen. It's phenomenal.

When in the grocery store, I feel really good and knowledgable. I stop and read the labels with much more intelligence. I now understand (due to reading the book) what to avoid and what is healthy. I feel smarter and stronger with my food choices and this affects my attitude about other areas of my life. I'm much more conscious. I feel like I was let out of jail when it comes to eating. This diet makes me feel smarter and freer, another unexpected result. Rather than feel deprived, I feel like I have license to eat whatever I want. I also know that I am eating consciously with awareness and pleasure. My body thanks me all day long.

I thought I'd miss "protein" from animal products----I was quite wrong. I get plenty of protein on this diet from plant sources and grains. Again, all of my preconceived ideas went out the door, once I started this plan. I will find out my cholesterol levels in another week and surely the numbers will improve, thus keeping me away from drug therapy. But, perhaps, more importantly, this diet has changed my life in significant ways, improving my health, well-being, sense of power, strength and probably saving me from having a heart attack, diabetes or stroke later on---as I was certainly heading in that direction. I can't wait to see the reaction from my physician when he sees my improved blood cholesterol levels and I can safely reject taking Statin drugs. Millions of people take Statins for high LDL and total cholesterol levels, when the majority of them could simply change their diet plan and get off the drugs. Knowledge is power.

I really believe that this author has saved my life! This book is a gem and perhaps it will awaken you the way it has for me! Don't hesitate one minute. Read this book and take control of your life where you can really make a difference!

Eat for health, if you can
By Maggie Brasted
The Engine 2 Diet has typical self-help elements--personal success story, user testimonials, good advice, and bold claims for positive life-changing results. The advice is simple; Esselstyn summarizes it in just eight points. Like the advice in most self-help books, it's been preached elsewhere. Esselstyn's contribution summarizes the evidence for significant health benefits from a "plant-strong" diet, adds a dash of exercise, and lays out how to identify healthful choices and fix a variety of dishes from breakfast through desert.

Esselstyn's "plant-strong" means vegan. Engine 2 adds strict limits on sodium, fat, and sugar. It may be smart to avoid the vegan label. Engine 2 is aiming for the mainstream. There's no mention of saving animals, just a healthy lifestyle saving people. Another thing you won't find, there's no advice to limit how much you eat. The diet focuses exclusively on what you eat, claiming you can eat as much as you want of the allowed foods, be healthier, and lose weight.

I love many things about Engine 2. It gives people excellent goals for better health and explains in detail how to achieve those goals. I found the chapter on reading labels extremely helpful, especially the specific criteria for the grocery store aisles. The large recipe section includes many simple everyday dishes and few elaborate dishes. It offers replacements for animal-sourced high-fat workhorses like mayonnaise, salad dressing, and sandwich fillings. The book's strength is showing how to live this lifestyle every working day.

The recipes are easy to follow, instructions are clear, and I usually end up with what I expect. I had trouble finding ingredients for some of the recipes, especially on the first trial, and had to substitute and omit. Substituting firm tofu for soft in the mousse was unsuccessful. The result was grainy and runny--edible but not appealing. With the right type of tofu, this was very nice, not as rich as a high-fat dairy version but nearly the same consistency, very tasty, and totally acceptable to my household. Omitting nutritional yeast from the salad dressing changed the consistency only slightly and made an acceptable dressing. The black bean sandwich spread, on rye with the fixing, will be a regular lunch. The curry-seasoned tofu sandwich spread was good with rice and chutney in a tortilla. The simple sweet potato fries didn't last long. I really liked the meat-less loaf, although the rest of my household was less enthusiastic. The sloppy joes were easy and tasty, with nice serving suggestions.

Coming from a former professional triathlete, I expected exercise would get more coverage. Esselstyn gives a basic workout, fine if you aren't already exercising regularly. He emphasizes that anyone can exercise without joining a health club or installing a home gym. I really loved this; I am living proof. Aside from one basic chapter on exercise, this book is about the diet.

Many readers will encounter real difficulties adopting the Engine 2 plan. The book glosses over difficulties and makes a couple of rather silly recommendations. Readers are to empty and refill their kitchens over a weekend to immerse themselves in the Engine 2 plan. I laughed out loud. What working family can afford to throw or give away hundreds of dollars worth of food? Not mine. Engine 2 recommends that you get several medical tests to compare before and after results. What insurers will pay for medically unnecessary tests just to see if a new diet works? These put me off.

Readers who can't or won't mostly buy fresh and cook from scratch will find it hard to adhere to the Engine 2 plan. Finding Engine 2 approved packaged prepared foods as well as some specialty ingredients is a significant difficultly. There's not much at my local Safeway. At My Organic Market (MOM), I find only a few canned and frozen foods that met the Engine 2 guidelines, even among the brands and products mentioned in the book. (And the stuff at MOM is pricey.) There are other stores and the internet but this is starting to eat up considerable time and money. As an environmentalist, I object to extra miles driving from store to store.

Most readers will have to give up many foods we are currently eating. Even with strong motivation, it's hard to give up favorite foods cold tofurky. The promised benefits are great enough that my household will adopt as much of the plan as our resources and willpower permit. But, it will definitely take much longer than 28 days and we will certainly make compromises between what Engine 2 recommends on one hand and what foods we can find, how much time we can devote to extra shopping and cooking, and what we can bring ourselves to give up on the other. Instead of a 28-day sprint, this will be a longer journey for us.

Wow, this may be the best "diet" book ever
By Jo Ann LeQuang
I've read a lot of diet books and been on a lot of diets but what's so intriguing about Engine2 is that it's written by an unlikely character--a triathlete Texan firefighter who is not just a vegetarian, but a vegan, and not just a vegan but an oil-free vegan.

If you're not from Texas, you can't really appreciate what it means to be a vegetarian in a state that prizes its beef industry and barbecue. Why just last month at the Houston Rodeo one of the most popular foods sold was something called "chicken-fried bacon." It was deep-fried bacon!

Engine2 presents a pretty radical diet--no meat, no artificial foods, no white flour, no white pasta, no dairy, no oil. Yet there is something altogether compelling about the case Rip Esselstyn makes. It sound so logical, so simple ...

Anyway, I tried it. I have to admit I tried it imperfectly in that there were parts I didn't understand at first (but have since corrected--like eating white pasta). It's been about 3 weeks. I haven't been exercising up to his standards, either. But I lost 5 pounds and never spent a minute hungry or feeling deprived.

But I'm getting hardcore right now not because of the weight loss, but because I feel fabulous. I had no idea how bad I felt until now. I'm not kidding--my frequent headaches are all but gone, no more GI troubles, no more aches and pains. My energy level is increasing.

The recipes in the book are different but really great. Love the "Big Bowl," "Sloppy Joes," and "Fajitas" but be prepared--you have to be willing to start buying different foods (lots of produce) and cooking for yourself. But the recipes are quick and easy and very tasty.

I am totally sold on this. This is the first and only book review I have ever done here at Amazon and I did it because I'm just an ordinary woman living in Texas who tried this diet and discovered improved health instead of mere weight loss.
