Nine months shy of hs 40th birthday, freelance music producer Tyler Harrison has started to experience horrific hallucinations. At first, he thinks it's just the stress of his job, but the hallucinations continue until they culminate at the three-day concert in Chicago, Lollapalloza, which he is covering for work. There he is approached by an older man who tells him that he's going to die on his fortieth birthday.
The man claims to be an angel named Matthew, and even though he gives Tyler enough evidence to convince him he's telling the truth, he doesn't know what to do with the information.
Tyler's underlying doubt and confusion about Matthew's prediction turn to anger, both at God and those around him. As he begins to exhibit destructive behavior, he befriends Ellis, an internationally known DJ. Tyler is scared that he really is about to die. He's scared for his sanity. He's scared that if he does die, he's not going to Heaven. He also soon becomes scared of Ellis, who is wild and opens up a door of temptation to Tyler.
As Tyler begins falling in a downward spiral of fear and confusion, he reaches out to a pastor he met, Will, and tries to right his wrongs with some of the important people in his life in a desperate attempt to find peace before his 40th birthday.

Not for Grandma
By Sally
This is not your grandma's Christian fiction. The protagonist, Tyler Harrison, uses profanity and drinks to excess. In addition, he makes some foolish choices. The plot, set in Chicago and written in a disjointed fashion, demonstrates the confusion of Tyler, a thirty-nine year-old man who is told by an angel that he will die within the following year. He sets out to find out more about this prophecy. That's where confusion reigns.
There are many references to music and today's world that I did not understand. I think that a thirty-something person would get these references much better than I. I must admit, I found myself totally confused, but then, I am a grandma.
Note: contains profanity. Discussion questions included.

A thought-provoking novel
By Stephanie
Travis Thrasher does not write your "typical" Christian Fiction. His characters are sometimes pretty rough around the edges. They are flawed; they are searching; they struggle with broken dreams and with their beliefs. I can relate to some trait a character has in every single Thrasher novel. It's one of the reasons I enjoy his books so much.
The main character, Tyler, is a Christian. A struggling, questioning believer who drinks and occasionally swears- but a Christian nonetheless. Tyler is visited by an angel and given the 'gift' of knowing when he is going to die. '40' chronicles the journey he takes over the next 9 months. Readers gain insight into Tyler's life- flashbacks to his childhood...regrets he has...relationships he currently has and wishes he had...other directions his life may have taken.
'40' is one of-if not THE-most thought-provoking novels I've ever read. It raised many questions: What if I knew when I was going to die? What would I regret? What would I do differently? How would that knowledge change my relationships with my family? with my friends? with God?
Yes, '40' is dark at times. Yes, there is occasional swearing. But there is also restoration and change and faith. Thrasher uses all those things to bring to life a complex, introspective character who could be just about any one of us. I highly recommend this book-it's one of my favorites.

Wonderful storyline...But
By C. Yates
I have so many thoughts about this book that I really am not sure where to start. Let me first say that this is the first Travis Thrasher book I have ever read, so I cannot say that it is the best or the worst book he has ever written. It is also the first book I have ever read that is written in first person, present tense point of view. I was a little worried about that at first because I have never been able to get into a book written in that style before, but Travis managed to expertly draw me in. I felt sometimes that the story was dragging, but the "what ifs" being posed made me want to keep reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the story itself, about a man who has managed to turn his back on God and live life his own way. But it turns out his own way hasn't been that great, and a few months after he turns 39 he is visited by an angel and told he won't live a day past his 40th birthday. I liked the way Travis posed the thoughts of guardian angels and what we have been protected from, and that if we could see what we had really been protected from it would scare us silly. I also liked the thought that no matter what our actions, however insignificant they may seem at the time, they may drastically alter the course of our lives. I think my favorite part may have been that the protagonist, Tyler, got to see and actually "meet" himself as he would have been under two different sets of circumstances. This book is definitely thought provoking and provides some wonderful Biblical truths. At times I felt like Travis was telling my own story as a child. However, I give it a three star rating because there is bad language throughout the book, including a couple of instances of using God's name in vain. I have listened to numerous interviews with Travis and I have heard him give his opinion of this topic. However, I have to disagree with that aspect of his reasoning. I do believe we need to address real life situations to make a story authentic, but there are ways to get your point across without using that kind of language. It just detracts from the story, and besides I hear that kind of language every single day of my life. When I pick up a Christian fiction novel to read, I expect it not to have that stuff in it. That is in fact, why I read Christian fiction. If this had been a mainstream publisher I wouldn't have even mentioned the language because it would be expected. Authors like Ted Dekker, for example, can spin a gripping serial killer story full of dark deeds and evil, taking you from the pit of evil into the glorious light of truth and never once use foul language or God's name in the wrong way. I would appreciate Christian fiction staying that way. I do plan to read some of Travis' past work, but I am afraid if his books continue to use this language under the name of Christian fiction, I will have to stop reading his work. I find that really sad too, because he really is a talented author and I love a good supernatural thriller.
