Amazon.com Review
It's hard to think of a CEO that commands as much respect as Jack Welch. Under his leadership, General Electric reinvented itself several times over by integrating new and innovative practices into its many lines of business. In Jack: Straight from the Gut, Welch, with the help of Business Week journalist John Byrne, recounts his career and the style of management that helped to make GE one of the most successful companies of the last century. Beginning with Welch's childhood in Salem, Massachusetts, the book quickly progresses from his first job in GE's plastics division to his ambitious rise up the GE corporate ladder, which culminated in 1981. What comes across most in this autobiography is Welch's passion for business as well as his remarkable directness and intolerance of what he calls "superficial congeniality"--a dislike that would help earn him the nickname "Neutron Jack." In spite of its 496 pages, Jack: Straight from the Gut is a quick read that any student or manager would do well to consider. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

From Publishers Weekly
It doesn't matter whether you love or hate Jack Welch. Who can resist hearing the man tell his story? This abridged version of his recently published autobiography, featuring Welch himself, is quite entertaining. With his slightly raspy Boston accent, Welch discusses his childhood and his career. When he proclaims something, he gives examples to illustrate his point. For instance, he says his mother was the strongest influence on his life. He then recalls the time he threw a hockey stick across the ice in disgust after losing a game, and his mother stormed into the locker room as some teammates were changing to exclaim loudly, "If you don't know how to lose, you'll never know how to win." When discussing his long career at GE, Welch is equally detailed. While some listeners unfamiliar with the corporation may find some of the discussions tedious, most will be captivated by what appears to be Welch's brutal honesty. He talks about having to lobby for promotions because he didn't "fit the GE mold," and he's open about making some poor business decisions. He's not as forthright as it appears, though. He talks about his beloved wife, Carolyn, who provided a stable home while Welch was rising in GE's ranks, but barely mentions their divorce. Still, this audiobook will be interesting listening for anyone who has followed Neutron Jack's career. Simultaneous release with Warner Books hardcover.

From Library Journal
In this fascinating personal and business memoir, Welch, recently retired CEO and board chair of the General Electric Company, reveals extensive inside details about his life and his 30-plus years with GE. During his 20 years as CEO, Welch built GE into a highly successful megacorporation, earning a reputation as one of the most admired business leaders in the world. Starting with poignant revelations of the importance of his mother in his life, he carries the listener through his early days of success in GE's Pittsfield, MA, office; his entry into the "big leagues" as CEO; the now famous "Neutron Jack" moniker from the time he reduced GE employment by over 100,000 in his strategy to "fix, sell, or close" each business; and the purchase of RCA to provide a foundation for future earnings. The stories of GE's buyout of NBC, the hard work to globalize the company, and the adoption of quality management principles help relate this powerful tale, read by Mike Barnicle and Welch, to listeners dealing with similar challenges in their own careers. The author's self-effacing personality, down-to-earth delivery, and focus on common sense all greatly add to this collection of Welch's intriguing anecdotes, which will likely be in strong demand. His thick Boston accent will occasionally catch listeners off guard and might steer some to the widely acclaimed hard copy. Highly recommended for all public libraries and university libraries supporting a business curriculum. Dale Farris, Groves, TX

Inspired me to be a leader and taught me how to do it
By Piyasak Ukrit
I consider this a bible for managers everywhere. This book inspired me to quit my job at a prestigious management consulting firm to pursue a career track that would enable me to run a business. As much as possible, I tried to understand and emulate Jack's thought process. Eight years later, on my 32nd birthday, I became a Managing Director of a consumer finance business in Southeast Asia. Now that I've had more experience and more responsibilities, I've recently re-read this to highlight passages to share with my senior management team and still found the insights within the book immensely useful.

Ok.

In hindsight, Jack Welch probably received more credit than he deserved. The three people who in put into his succession plan were mostly mediocre. Immelt probably was the correct decision, but that would only invalidate Welch's legacy because Immelt has a totally different style and approach.

Quickie on Jack Welch & GE
By A Customer
First half of the book is about childhood-to-retirement. Second half is dedicated to a few popular topics: Globalization, Six Sigma, eBusiness, Honeywell, etc. How can you summarize a guy's life in just a few pages... especially Jack Welch. I did enjoy the overall inspiring story, but it lacked substance. Itfs more a biography rather than a business gtoolh book.
For instance, Jackfs first limelight was an obscure unit in the plastics division. It obviously propelled his career and got him out from under gthe pileh. But, all the story says is that the people diligently developed a robust plastic (after many months) and suddenly $100+ million unit was bornc wellc. Ifm sure therefs a lot more to the business challenge than that. Jack writes about what he remembers and naturally that tends to have holes. Those holes lead one to believe that business was much simpler than it really was.
The other criticism is that specific people within and outside of GE are named in stories, which sound unobjective. One must look at these characterizations with somewhat of a challenging eye. As expected, Jack isnft going to criticize Henry Kissinger and Larry Bossidy, but one would hope that he would put more beef into Gary Wendtfs firing. Rather, Jack saves most of his critical commentary for the EU Commission, more specifically Mr. Gonzales-Diaz.
A light hearted reader can take this book for what it is: a fun and entertaining biography, but not a serious business book.

Valuable Investment
By Rita Sands
I had the priviledge to receive a copy of Lisa's book to help me in my job search. What helped me tremendously was the section she calls "botoxing your resume." I had paid a well-known job search company a significant amount of money to write my resume -- I received no call backs for interviews using that resume. But, with Lisa's advice I redesigned my resume and I started getting calls. In fact, I was told by a recruiter that I had an EXCELLENT resume. The other pieces of advice that helped were the suggestions about ATTITUDE, such as interviewing like a "rock star" and "looking the part." Being out of work is overwhelming and at times demoralizing, but Lisa's encouraging advice made a tremendous difference. I could not afford to let my emotions negatively influence a potential employer -- or my motivation to find the RIGHT job. She reminded me that if I didn't behave like a dynamic professional...why would anyone believe me? Career Comeback also helped to reinforce that I was also doing some things right -- and helped to show me many ways I could do them better. I kept Lisa's book closeby and reread sections again and again as I went through my job search -- I call her my personal job coach. I would greatly recommend this book to anyone in today's challenging job market -- and even to those who are not in the job market but want to remain viable. The job market has changed dramatically in the last few years, and Lisa provides a lot of advice so professionals can remain competitive.

OK for those who are really out of the loop
By Seattle Hobbit
If you're really out of the loop with current trends, technology and culture, and don't know too many Gen-Y or Gen-X workers, this book likely has information that will help you with your job search.

However, if you're accustomed to working with new technology and people from these generations (or even if you're an older Gex-X person yourself), you're probably not "out of the loop" enough to learn a lot from this book. For example, if you didn't know that Gen-Y wants to communicate by text even if they're across the room from you, you haven't been watching what's been going on in the world around you for the past 5 or more years. That tidbit isn't exactly news to many of us.

Also, the fashion advice in this book is decided biased toward America. Those seeking work in Canada, the UK, New Zealand or Australia would do well to ignore it and follow the norms that apply in their countries. For example, in America, hose = dowdy, but elsewhere, no hose = unfinished and not well put together. I did greatly appreciate the author bucking the Clint Kelly "the best hemline for every woman is right at the bend of the knee" advice trend on skirts, and recommending that each woman should choose the skirt length that is most flattering to them, not what is the current trend. And do workers over 40 really need to know that a casual dress code does not mean that jeans that show one's butt cleavage and muffin top are OK? I think that's more likely to be advice useful to the Gen-Y set.

One piece of advice is to invite a 20-something to peruse your closet and toss anything not current-style. If I did that, I'd end up with nothing but hiphuggers, ugly patterned maternity tops (going out of trend, but still popular after they came into style during the celebrity baby boom a few years ago) and shrugs in my closet! No thanks, I'll keep my Lafayette 148 modern-but-classy blazers and dark skirts in cuts that look good on me until I see someone at my professional level in my industry dressing like a 20-something. ;-) It's decent advice if you want to land a position on a department store sales floor (even then, you'd risk being seen as trying to look much younger than you are), but not necessarily spot-on for the professional services industry.

The book spent entirely too much time on "how to make yourself look younger" via cosmetic procedures, surgical and otherwise. While certainly this is often vital for on-camera "talent" type work where people are "cast" as much as "hired", I don't think it should be as big a part of most job search activities as the author seems to think it should be, given the amount of space dedicated to this and other appearance-related content in the book. Given that the writer has spent most or all of her career in the industry, it's the world she knows. Just don't assume that you, a reader of the book, necessarily inhabit a world with the same values.

The book also includes a couple resume "before and after" examples. I found the "after"s too busy with multiple fonts and full of graphic design for design's sake, making it harder to identify the content rather than easier. But there likely is a happy medium between the two, like using the format suggested for the "new and improved" resumes, but without the visual noise.

Informative and Fun Advice for Over 40 Job Seekers
By LegalBeagle
Unemployment abounds for all job seekers, but those over 40 face additional age related barriers. In Career Comeback, author Lisa Johnson Mandell, a 49 year old entertainment journalist, shares how she successfully "botoxed her resume" to a new job. As Johnson Mandell confesses, "my own career comeback plan involved finding my niche, branding myself, freshening up my image from head to toe, rabid social networking, and age proofing my resume so that my over-forty status would not be readily apparent."

Career Comeback walks the reader through the necessary steps to become an "ageless" job seeker. Johnson Mandell is a talented writer who makes a serious subject fun such as including a "How Hip Are You" quiz (hint if you don't know what Huffpo and DS are you probably need a pop culture refresher course) and "12 Items You Need to Throw Away Now" (who knew that nude panty hose was passé?) . And for the short of cash job seekers, she details a "One-Day Career Comeback for $50 or Less."

Career Comeback is an informative and surprisingly fun read!

no new news really
By brandon boyce
I went into this book a Mike Tyson fan, (of his boxing skills not his human skills) and Mr. Torres does an admirable job of describing some of the craziness that surrounds the fragile world around Mike Tyson everday. His quirky, hard to understand manic depressive behavior, to his antics in the bars at night. But somehow I had the feeling that Mr. Torres was biting his tongue, I feel like after reading this that he is biting his tongue as far as giving us full disclosure.

Full Of Brilliance And Strife
By Alex Hutchinson's Twisted Trails
This was the first book I read on the sport of boxing. Mike Tyson has always been an intriging character in American sports lore and this book set the stage to deepen that allure. Author and former fighter Jose Torres had the unique advantage of knowing Mike during those years of turmoil that sent his life spinning out of control. The personal accounts in this book were the first to show Iron Mike's softer side, his insecurities and the hints towards homosexuality. It was the latter hints that provoked my imagination when, many years later, I wrote my own boxing novel Virgin Gloves.

I would be lying if I said Mike Tyson didn't have an impact on my life. There was always something about his paranoia and self-destructiveness that reached me as an adolescent. I had the opportunity to meet Jose Torres and he said that Mike was a modern day Shakespearean character full of brilliance and strife. Funny, that's exactly what I thought of Jose's book.

Entertaining for sure!
By krisnad
I wasn't expecting much seeing as how the author is a former boxer himself. But given that fact, I was pleasantly surprised with this read. The subject (Mike Tyson), is portrayed only as an insider can see. It was both entertaining and depressing at the same time. Entertaining because the reader feels like a safe fly on the wall while learning some of the hellish things that this man went through growing up. Depressing because it reaffirms the fact that we as a society have much work to do. Too many children are brought up on the streets with no guidance. These children need contact with sensible and caring people. Mike Tyson had a talent that at least made him rich, but I'm pretty sure he'd have traded all of that money for a normal childhood if he were given the chance.

My Little Red BookFrom Twelve

MY LITTLE RED BOOK is an anthology of stories about first periods, collected from women of all ages from around the world. The accounts range from light-hearted (the editor got hers while water skiing in a yellow bathing suit) to heart-stopping (a first period discovered just as one girl was about to be strip-searched by the Nazis). The contributors include well-known women writers (Meg Cabot, Erica Jong, Gloria Steinem, Cecily von Ziegesar), alongside today's teens. And while the authors differ in race, faith, or cultural background, their stories share a common bond: they are all accessible, deeply honest, and highly informative. Whatever a girl experiences or expects, she'll find stories that speak to her thoughts and feelings.

Ultimately, MY LITTLE READ BOOK is more than a collection of stories. It is a call for a change in attitude, for a new way of seeing periods. In a time when the taboo around menstruation seems to be one of the few left standing, it makes a difficult subject easier to talk about, and helps girls feel proud instead of embarrassed or ashamed. By revealing what it feels like to undergo this experience first hand, and giving women the chance to explain their feelings in their own words, it aims to provide support, entertainment, and a starting point for discussion for mothers and daughters everywhere. It is a book every girl should have. Period.

From Publishers Weekly
These brief, engaging and oh-so-revealing anecdotes (90 in all) about first-time periods are written by a vast array of authors, professionals and youth. Edited by a freshman at Yale with a global mission (the Do More section at the back lists women's health and reproductive-rights charities), and modeled wittily on Chairman Mao's Little Red Book, these short essays tenderly cover the gamut of grief and embarrassment, joy and disappointment that accompanies the onslaught of menses, written by women from ages 15 to 101. Mostly, these authors concur that Mom didn't tell us much; we didn't expect the big moment even if we had been prompted by reading Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret; and suddenly becoming a woman proved rather more irritating than momentous. These accounts are touching and brave—The Curse, 1939, in which Lola Gerhard writes of starting to bleed cluelessly in the orphanage where she lived and being simply handed a big bandage and a belt (That was it for sex education); enduring the Old World ritual of being slapped by one's mother or ostracized, as one Indian author writes in Locked in a Room with Dosai, 1962; a more enthusiastic reaction by feminist mothers. Gloria Steinem's reprinted If Men Could Menstruate (1978) acts as a fulcrum, while others determined to break the silence rage, reminisce and resolve to banish the shame for their own daughters. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—After finishing these recollections by women of their first menstrual period, readers cannot help but be struck by three things: what a defining moment it was, how far society has come, and how often Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (Yearling, 1970) is mentioned as a source of information and comfort. The 18-year-old editor recounts her story of her 12-year-old self caught unaware while waterskiing and dropped off, by her embarrassed grandfather, at a pharmacy where she found herself searching for sanitary products in an aisle featuring incontinence supplies. The women queried are as well known as Erika Jong and as little known as Nalebuff's younger sister. The earliest recollection is Henrietta Wittenberg's, remembering in her 100th year, of her worry in 1916 about sitting on a man's lap. The most recent story, from 2008, is Jacquelyn Mitchard's memory of getting the "curse" and her contrastingly comforting words to her sixth-grade daughter. Some memories are magical (snorkeling with a dolphin in the Caribbean Sea); some are heart wrenching (a Holocaust survivor's escape from a Nazi strip search); others embarrassing at the time but humorous in retrospect. For most female readers, the stories will be poignantly familiar. The subject index is particularly informative and includes YA authors and "Unusual Customs." A glossary of euphemisms is fun and enlightening, and the bibliography contains health resources, fiction and nonfiction, and informative Web sites.—Jackie Gropman, formerly at Fairfax County Public Library System, Fairfax, VA

From Booklist
Borrowing her title from Mao Tse-tung’s classic, 18-year-old Nalebuff presents her own, very different manifesto: an anthology that she hopes will help bring menstruation “into the arena of acceptable discourse.” Ranging in age from teens to seniors, the international contributors speak about their first periods in entries that lead into broader questions of family life, social structure, gender politics, and self-image. Western readers will find the global perspectives eye-opening. A Kenyan teen says that in her country, “girls don’t go to school when you have your period because pads are so expensive.” The authors’ candor and accessibility and the extensive appended resource sections make this an obvious choice for teens, while parents dreaming of nurturing, celebratory discussions will be reminded to respect their daughters’ responses, even if, as reported in one essay, the response is: “Promise you won’t tell Dad, and, geez, no Rite of Passage party, ok?” A rich, welcome collection for readers of various ages and, perhaps surprisingly, more than one gender. --Gillian Engberg

Great for 3 generations - Grandmother, mother and daughters
By Frank Paolino
I stumbled upon this when searching for the other Little Red Book (from Chairman Mao), but bought it for my two daughters. I was afraid I would get laughed at, but they started reading it, laughing, sharing it with their mom and grand-mother. Everyone had a story to share and I win "sensitive father of the year" award.

I sent this book to my daughter for my granddaughter. Daughter loved it and recommended it to her friends. Granddaughter and friend spent hours laughing about it but still too embarrassed to talk to me about it. Point is that subject was offered, information was given and recipient enjoyed book. What more can you say.

Classic Richard
By mommyofmax
I am embarassed to admit this: I am a closet Richard Simmons fan. Yes, he's a little corny, a little cheesy, a little over the top sometimes but having said that: I love the man. What a bright and shining light of inspiration he is to people without hope or direction.

I originally dubbed the audio version of this book on tape from the library over 10 years ago. I still listen to it. I decided that I would like to own the actual book version because I enjoyed the tapes so much.

This book is filled with short, easy-to-read-in-a-couple-of-minutes stories of inspiration, and practical tips for changing one's lifestyle.

I don't have a weight problem but I am inspired to make healthy choices in my life because of this book. I highly recommend it.

End The Fed, by Ron Paul

In the post-meltdown world, it is irresponsible, ineffective, and ultimately useless to have a serious economic debate without considering and challenging the role of the Federal Reserve.

Most people think of the Fed as an indispensable institution without which the country's economy could not properly function. But in END THE FED, Ron Paul draws on American history, economics, and fascinating stories from his own long political life to argue that the Fed is both corrupt and unconstitutional. It is inflating currency today at nearly a Weimar or Zimbabwe level, a practice that threatens to put us into an inflationary depression where $100 bills are worthless. What most people don't realize is that the Fed -- created by the Morgans and Rockefellers at a private club off the coast of Georgia -- is actually working against their own personal interests. Congressman Paul's urgent appeal to all citizens and officials tells us where we went wrong and what we need to do fix America's economic policy for future generations.

From Publishers Weekly
At first glance, abolishing the Federal Reserve and returning to the gold standard seems a quaintly eccentric idea, but Texas congressman Paul presents a plan to eliminate our country's central bank, and return to a private banking system, that's both serious and plausible. The questionable aspects involve Paul's predicted results: not only will ending the Fed eliminate inflation (the government cannot print more money than it has gold reserves), but also business booms and busts, wars, income inequality, trade imbalances and the growth of government. Further, and perhaps most important, it would "disempower the secretive cartel of powerful money managers who exercise disproportionate influence over the conduct of public policy." Paul tends to gloss over those periods in history, including the Panic of 1907, in which private banking and the gold standard were law: "the bad reputation of nineteenth century American banking... is largely the result of... propaganda agitating for the creation of the Fed." With respect to "secretive cartels," Paul takes up the interesting question of whether J.P. Morgan is in fact preferable to Ben Bernanke. An engaging response to big-government solutions for the financial crisis, this knowledgeable and opinionated look at U.S. economics, from a firebrand public servant, should provoke much thought.

Review
"Rarely has a single book not only challenged, but decisively changed my mind. "
--Arlo Guthrie

"Everyone must read this book -- Congressmen and college students, Democrats and Republicans -- all Americans."
--Vince Vaughn

About the Author
Ron Paul, an eleven-term congressman from Texas, is the leading advocate of freedom in our nation's capital. He has devoted his political career to the defense of individual liberty, sound money, and a non-interventionist foreign policy. Judge Andrew Napolitano calls him "the Thomas Jefferson of our day."

After serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s, Dr. Paul moved to Texas to begin a civilian medical practice, delivering over four thousand babies in his career as an obstetrician. He served in Congress from 1976 to 1984, and again from 1996 to the present. He and Carol Paul, his wife of fifty-one years, have five children, eighteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Ron Paul, the New York Post once wrote, is a politician who "cannot be bought by special interests."

"There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles," added a congressional colleague. "Ron Paul is one of those few."

With this Ron Paul captured my imagination (at the time anyway) - updated on Feb. 11, 2014
By A dad
February 11, 2014 Update:
My in-person discussions with many people make me believe this book's title is well-known while the content is practically unknown.
This book has nothing to do with whether the Fed should ease or restrict monetary supply. At its heart the book questions our government's balance of power and holds that a group of bankers is too dominating. Meanwhile the political activities of Ron Paul and Rand Paul have often confused me and I cannot connect a lot of their positions with this book.
(end of update)
.....

Paul's book is a polemic that makes certain statements. For example, "The Fed is run by creditors." This book discusses several consequences of the Federal Reserve System, many unintended and unforeseen. End the Fed is Paul's story of how the country ended up with a lot of debt not necessarily through informed choices but because of our money system.

(Recommended reading: Declare Independence from Party Affiliation)

Ron Paul introduced H.R. 833 to abolish the Federal Reserve System.

The main counter argument to ending the Fed is that it would be a terrible mistake to give total money power to elected officials. The late Milton Friedman offered an alternative to the current system which "might" satisfy a broader constituency.

Friedman thought U.S. Notes could work if they were printed only to match population increase or else align increases of money supply to a price index. The system that Friedman talked about would leave physical money creation independent of political control IF it could be implemented. Currently, physical money is created through Treasury debt. When a dollar is created, it's an asset and also a liability that generates interest.

Friedman acknowledged that it may not be politically possible to take money power away from the Fed. Even after reading this book, I think Friedman was correct.

Ron Paul Hits a Homerun
By L. H. Rockwell, Jr.
Andrew Jackson ended his Fed in 1836. Ron Paul can do the same for us, if we make it possible. Read this book and work to end the central economic and political evil in America, the central bank that fuels recessions and depressions, the warfare state, the redistributionist state, and the police state. End the Fed!

Economics 101
By Bob Akimbo
Finally, a no-holds-barred, plain English explanation of the "Crime of the Century." Dr. Paul explains very clearly how the Federal Reserve has not helped our economy, but has virtually destroyed it. It's so clear, in fact, that maybe even our Congressmen and Senators will finally get it.

Economics 101: When you create more of something, the value decreases.

Economics 201: The Federal Reserve printing (Liquidity Injections) of Federal Reserve Notes (Dollars) has decreased their value.

Economics 301: The dramatic increase of Federal Reserve money printing in the last couple of decades has devalued our money and caused the current economic crisis.

Economics 401: The Fed is trying to solve the problem with more of the same thing that caused the problem.

Of course it's more complicated than this, and that's where this book is so important. Dr. Paul explains the history of the Fed, its relationship to modern wars and a myriad of other societal ills, the inevitable failure of a fiat currency and, more importantly, how we can get out of this mess.

The Federal Reserve system is nothing less than the most brilliant tool ever for the transfer of wealth and power from the average citizen to the wealthy and powerful, and we must rein it in to preserve our freedom. I know I must sound dramatic, but I can not stress enough the importance of honest, realistic, economic education. This book is a great first step. It should be required reading in all our schools.

Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love, by Larry Levin

Now in paperback, the New York Times-bestselling story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms.

Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

Review
"Highly recommended for anyone (that's all of us) in need of inspiration."―Library Journal (Starred review)

"As remarkable in spirit as he is distinctive in appearance, the extraordinary Oogy receives a hero's biography from adoring Levin."―Publishers Weekly

"Oogy's story confirms what Dewey taught me years ago...that even a wounded animal tossed aside is capable of amazing joy if given love and respect by the human chosen to share life with them."―Vicki Myron, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World

"An incredible story about an unforgettable dog. Get ready to make a very big place in your heart for OOGY. Because you're going to fall in love with this dog. And, this book."―Gary David Goldberg, creator of Family Ties and Brooklyn Bridge and author of Sit, Ubu, Sit

"This is a story about what can happen when the worst in people meets the best in people and the best wins. In spite of its subject, this is a gentle tale of one man's love for his dog and the angels along the way who brought Oogy into his life."―-Susan Richards, New York Times-bestselling author of Chosen by a Horse and Saddled

"At its heart, OOGY is a love story between a kind and generous man and an astonishing dog, reassuring in its affirmation that all the seemingly random pieces of life somehow belong together. This book is well worth spending time with."―Mary Nethery, co-author of the New York Times-bestselling Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle

"The story of Oogy proves that the human-canine bond doesn't depend on outward beauty. Oogy's love for the Levins, and theirs for him, will touch the heart of anyone who reads his story."―-Sharon Sakson, author of Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs

I was hooked by the picture of Oogy on the cover. The story did not disappoint.

This is a noble dog, an inspirational dog. (As someone says to the author, "When was the last time you heard of a fighting dog who was inspirational?" I don't have the quote exactly right, but it's just what I was thinking while reading.) Oogy had a horrendous history - he was literally a throw-away dog when Larry Levin and his sons first met him. Somehow Oogy's spirit and love for all creatures survived an unthinkable ordeal and shone through to all who met him, even when he was close to death and in incredible pain. This is an amazing animal, and the narrative works best when Larry Levin makes the story about Oogy. Of course it is also about a family, but it is mostly about this amazing dog.

True animal lovers - vets, rescuers - recognize the special nature of this animal. People seeing him on the street are initially put off by his appearance but quickly won over by his personality.

The writing style is straightforward which works well with the compelling and emotional nature of the story. I cried early and often. It is a quick read but it will stay with me for a long, long time.

Minor quibble: it seemed that the author was way too hard on himself every time Oogy suffered some pain, and obsessed with making it up to Oogy for the unthinkable experiences of his early life. Mr. Levin is apparently an attorney with a very flexible schedule that allows him to spend a lot of time at home, and his bonding with Oogy is so complete that he occasionally seems to lose perspective.

Another quibble is the title. Everybody loves Oogy. That's the whole point.

I think the story works so well because this is basically a normal family whose lives are touched by an extraordinary dog. Oogy is the miracle. Very highly recommended.

Great for dog lovers
By SZAA
I am so in love with Oogy after reading this book, I feel like he's MY dog, rather than the Levin's family member! After being used as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring outside Philadelphia, this sweet, loving, and near-death dog arrived at an animal hospital and basically began the fight for his life.

Larry Levin and his young twin sons went to the animal hospital for a difficult reason as well, being forced to put their elderly cat to sleep. As they were leaving Oogy had wriggled out of his cage and tackled one of the boys to the ground, covering the boy with kisses despite the painful injuries he was still suffering from. The Levins knew they had found a new family member!

Bringing Oogy home was not easy, as the poor pup was missing an ear and had a face full of scar tissue that required a lot of care, but the boys and their father were determined to make him fit into their family. What started as a tragedy became a beautiful ending, with a loyal, friendly, and happy dog taking the place of the beaten puppy that first arrived at that animal shelter.

If the sweet face on the cover doesn't first draw you in, the first few pages certainly will. Author Levin writes in a to-the-point, readable manner that will have you finishing the book in no time. I read it in one morning on the train to work! You'll want to keep turning the pages, as this little dog puts a huge smile on your face and inspires you to want to help other animals like him.

I have also rescued a dog that was deemed a "difficult breed" and have loved every second of being her person. Oogy's story just solidified my belief on rescuing dogs. I highly recommend this inspirational read!

There truly is a human family for every dog...
By Jadecat
I am sorely tempted to give the book 5 stars because any story about an abused dog finding a perfect family deserves high praise, but that would be a bit disingenuous on my part, so I give it about a 4.4 rating. I can't say I found the book to be a big tear jerker, books such as Saved: Rescued Animals and the Lives They Transform, Found Dogs: Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet are more the type that get me. This story does not wallow in the cruelness that happened to Oogy when he was a pup, rather it showers you with all the love he found when he was turned over to the animal hospital and then given to the Levins.

The story of Oogy is compelling and I truly think the Levins are wonderful people. The author and his 2 sons basically fell in love with Oogy at first sight. I have to admire someone who can just give in to that feeling with such utter ease, with no doubts and no internal debate about whether it is right or not. He saw Oogy with all his physical faults, but just knew he had to have him regardless. The stars aligned for the Levins that day when their paths crossed with Oogy. Huge kudos also go to the animal hospital and the woman who fought to save him in the first place.

There is a bit of background story about the Levins and their 2 sons, but it is interesting and leads up to Oogy's adoption. I read the book in one day, but in recalling it in my head, the time line gets a little jumbled. I think in the story the author jumps around to different events, such as near the end of the book he talks about a trainer he brought in when Oogy was younger. It kind of seemed like that was added as an afterthought, when it could have been placed early in the book. I do like stories to follow a sort of chronological time line and there aren't many dates or ages given for Oogy that help me to place how old he is during the story. That is just a little pickiness on my part though.

The author comes across as a very easy going, humorous person. That is fortunate for Oogy because his behavior in the early years is not something that everyone could have withstood. Sleeping on the dining room table. Barking at you while you eat. Needless to say Oogy is a bit spoiled, and as a big fan of the Dog Whisperer, that can cause some issues. Oogy was definitely not an aggressive dog, but he seemed to think he was on equal footing with all the humans there. He seemed to do what he wanted to do when he wanted to. But you know what, it works for them, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

In all, it is a good book. I have read numerous animals stories (Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale, Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned about Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat and Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat), and while this one kept me reading and in love with Oogy, it didn't have quite the polish of these other books. Hmm, maybe that is how Oogy would have wanted it though.

A Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions, by Katharine Hayhoe, Andrew Farley

Global warming: it's one of the hottest scientific and political issues of today. And yet we've all found ourselves asking . . .

- It's freezing outside--where's global warming now?
- Climate is always changing--how do we know this isn't just a cycle?
- Why should Christians care about global warming when we know the world won't end that way?

For all the talk about climate change, there's still a great deal of debate about what it all means, especially among Christians. A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE offers straightforward answers to these questions, without the spin. This book untangles the complex science and tackles many long-held misconceptions about global warming. Authored by a climate scientist and a pastor, A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE boldly explores the role our Christian faith can play in guiding our opinions on this important global issue.

Review
"In the midst of one of the most heated debates of my lifetime, there are some voices that offer calm and respectful insight to people of faith. Balancing passion with civility, Hayhoe and Farley speak with such a voice. No matter what you believe about climate change's causes or effects, A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE will challenge you to think critically about both the issue and your responsibility to respond."―Jonathan Merritt, faith and culture writer, national spokesperson, Southern Baptist Environment and Climate Initiative

"As Christians committed to the truth in both science and faith, Katharine Hayhoe and Andrew Farley present a compelling case for why addressing climate change is a part of what it means to be a Christian today."―Larry J. Schweiger, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation and author of Last Chance

"This engaging book has everything you need to understand the climate change debate: facts, answers, stories, and of course Scripture. It will inform the merely curious or answer the skeptic or equip the person who wants to fix the problem. I loved it!"―Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor, Northland: A Church Distributed, Orlando, Florida

"Yes, Lord! A scientist and a pastor writing a book together about faith and global warming! How cool is that? What a beautiful sign of the times we are living in. A whole movement of Christians are convinced that our faith in the God of heaven has to affect the way we live on this earth. May this book continue to move us closer to God's dream for the world."―Shane Claiborne, author and activist

"Climate scientists are best able to tell us if, how, and why Earth's climate is changing. Ethicists and religious scholars and leaders are best able to tell us how we should respond to the knowledge that science provides. Authored by a climate scientist and a religious leader, this book provides a unique perspective on Christian responses to the findings of climate science. Anyone who is open to messages from both science and Christian Scriptures will be struck by the insight and synthesis of this remarkable author team. With clarity unusual in science reports and impeccable logic, A CLIMATE FOR CHANGE is a compelling call to action."―James J. McCarthy, Agassiz Professor of Oceanography, Harvard University, and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

"This is a book all Christians should read. It makes the science, the issues, and even the misunderstandings come alive. Christians need to help in the fight against climate change and its effects. Jesus calls Christians to serve 'the least of these'-the poor and oppressed of the developing world-who are most affected by climate change. This book is a compelling call to action for any Christian who cares about the issues our world is facing today. And that should be all of us."―Dean Hirsch, president, World Vision International

understandable and useful
By S. Mosher
The faith in the "faith-based decisions" of the title is narrowly cast as the religion of American Christians who favor a literal interpretation of the Bible. Hayhoe and Farley stake out their territory early -- "We don't worship the earth. We worship the Creator of the universe." However, they also proclaim that they "believe in common sense," and that's where they make a valuable contribution toward bringing current climate science into the average person's living room. Instead of arguing about whether the earth is only a few thousand years old or billions, they look at the scientific evidence for global warming and counter some popular misconceptions about what the studies actually show and where areas of uncertainty remain. The book's largish print, punchy sentences, and full color charts keep the technical information accessible and help readers understand that disagreement among scientists about the details - such as why northern ice caps are melting faster than expected -- doesn't mean there is gross disagreement about the general arc of climate trends. And for the reader who remains unconvinced of the reality of global warming, they suggest a medical analogy: If your doctor said you had symptoms of early signs of a serious illness, wouldn't you want to do what you could to prevent the full onset of that illness?

Much environmental advocacy stops there and says, in effect, humans made the mess, so we are obligated to clean it up. That's not a very inspiring or motivating message. Hayhoe and Farley take a different tactic, one that could be emulated by any faith community using the language of its own holy teachings. They base their call for action not on the guilty conscience of the materialistic West, but on the need for compassion. Hayhoe's research on the possible effects of global warming paints a dismal picture of the potential suffering that billions of the world's poorest could face. The obligation on Christians, they argue, is to stop being ignorant or indifferent about climate change and to act, even if it's in just some small way: "Doing something, anything, about climate change is a step in the direction of caring for people." The book offers a very lean menu of suggested actions - use less heat and electricity, swap out incandescent bulbs for fluorescents, take your own shopping bags to the store, replace worn-out appliances and cars with more efficient models. The reader who has become motivated to act may be disappointed that more ideas aren't offered, but additional resources for environmentally smart living are listed in the back of the book.

For the final contrarian holdouts, the book concludes with reasons why efforts to slow the effects of climate change do not have to be expensive, anti-development, destructive to the economy, or dependent on technology that hasn't been invented yet. True global warming skeptics probably would never make it to those final pages, but the arguments may be helpful to readers seeking a way to justify to their friends why they've started lightening their footprint on the earth.

I give extra points for the discussion questions in the back that make this a potential small group study aid. Also, to keep the flow of the text clean, the authors avoided footnotes and endnotes, but readers who want to know more will find all their sources listed at the end of the book, including dozens of current scientific articles.

I am a scientist who had the pleasure of reviewing this book as it went to press. Written by a climate scientist and an evangelical pastor, "A Climate for Change" clearly explains the science and the urgency of global warming in a way that I hope will resonate with Christian readers.

The book makes it clear that global warming is a scientific reality, not something driven by a political agenda. Furthermore, the authors drive home the point that doing something about global warming is "a step in the direction of caring for people". Quite simply, fighting global warming is the right thing to do.

I hope this well written, visually appealing and morally powerful book reaches a wide audience.

Good background; aimed at the non-scientist; clear and easy to follow
By Sergio
This is a good resource for information about what we can know about global warming and it's likely causes, presented in simple, straightforward terms, and interspersed with a solid biblical basis for why we should educate ourselves and why we should care. Basic historical, ecological, and geological data are presented and compared by a qualified scientist and evangelical pastor; the current state of consensus is presented; and predictions of 10 or 20 years ago are compared to actual changes and to updated predictions of the past few years.

If you really want to respond to this issue as a Christian (and you MUST), this book gives you the information you need to help choose a Christian response. Also a good resource for discussing these issues with family members and those Christians you know who still don't buy the idea that humans might actually be destroying the incredible gift God gave us to live on.

Highly recommended.

Two criticisms: 1) they seem to spend more time than is necessary in hammering home the main points, sometimes referencing backup data more again. As an engineer and scientist, this may just be my impatience to get to the conclusions/recommendations once I'm on board with the facts and statistics, so someone less knowledgable of the background info provided may not find it repetitive. 2) I really wanted to get to the 'how do we respond' bit, but this part turned out to be a bit weak. Yes, it lists a lot of things an individual or family can do, but not much sound theological reasons for any of them, and a bit of a "if you do anything, it's better than nothing" kind of recommendation. Still, the info is there for anyone who really wants to use it.
