About the Author
Ellis Peters is a pseudonym of Edith Mary Pargeter (1913 1995), a British author whose Chronicles of Brother Cadfael are credited with popularizing the historical mystery. Cadfael, a WelshBenedictinemonk living atShrewsbury Abbey in the first half of the twelfth century, has been described as combining the curious mind of a scientist with the bravery of a knight-errant. The character has been adapted for television, and the books drew international attention to Shrewsbury and its history.Pargeter won an Edgar Awardin 1963 for"Death and the Joyful Woman", and in 1993 she won theCartier Diamond Dagger, an annual award given by theCrime Writers Association of Great Britain. She was appointedofficer of the Order of the British Empirein 1994, and in 1999 the BritishCrime Writers Associationestablished theEllis Peters Historical Daggeraward, later called the Ellis Peters Historical Award.

Love the series

I am rereading all of the Brother Cadfael books in order to get a more coherent look at the series, which is a top favorite.. I thought I read this years ago but did not remember any of it so perhaps not.
It was wonderful to read about how he and Hugh Beringar made their acquaintance, although it is often alluded to. A sad and desperate time in England with King Stephen and Empress Matilda warring over the throne. About Shropshire I learned this: "Historically, the county has been known as Shropshire as well as by its older, Norman-derived name of Salop." Since my L'Enfant family was here at some early stage from Normandy, it speaks to me.
Cadfael's evolution from soldier and adventurer in the Crusades to monk in Shrewsbury gets fleshed out even more. Love this series and understand why it was made into a series of TV movies

A Very Special Benedictine

This is a wonderful sequel to the introductory novel in this series, A Morbid Taste for Bones. Yes, Brother Cadfael trusts his own judgment over the rules and for Catholicism that's a dicey road to travel -- but Cadfael is that rare protagonist, a truly good and thoughtful man and I am willing to suggest that that sort of character is vastly more difficult to portray than the flawed and evil. So I am delighted with Ellis Peters' creation and plan to follow Cadfael as far as she can take him.

10 year wait....and it was worth it!

I started to read this book over 10 years ago. I finally got to finish it and it is worth the wait! I personally love this style of period murder mystery and I loved the PBS Mystery! series with the great Derek Jacoby! If good writing makes for good reading, than this is a really good (GREAT) book!
