Amazon.com Review
Aficionados of the hit TV show The West Wing who are suffering through holiday reruns will jump right into Brad Meltzer's third novel (after The Tenth Justice and Dead Even), which takes readers into the White House office of the president's own law firm and introduces a first daughter whose complex psychological problems jump-start this fast-paced thriller. Michael Garrick loves his job as deputy counsel, but when he falls for Nora Hartson, the president's daughter, the conflict between his professional ethics and his growing love for her puts him right in the middle of a murder plot that may reach all the way to the Oval Office.

Meltzer excels at plotting, and he knows the back corridors, family quarters, and secret tunnels of the executive branch as well as those of the Supreme Court, which he revealed in his first two blockbusters. He's not as skillful at characterization. It's hard to believe that the sociopathic tendencies of people in a president's inner circle--or even his family--would have managed to escape the scrutiny of an FBI investigation during his rise to power. And Nora, in particular, doesn't quite come off as the misguided victim she must be in order to make the rest of the story credible. But that's not a huge quibble; Meltzer manages to make Edgar Simon, Michael's boss, the most interesting White House counsel since John Dean. The First Counsel is a cleverly commercial mix of legal thriller and political chicanery guaranteed to keep you turning pages until Meltzer puts the third branch of government in his sights, too. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
A date with the president's daughter draws an ambitious young lawyer into a bewildering web of scandal, extortion and murder in this formulaic but lightning-paced suspense thriller set behind the scenes at the White House. Michael Garrick works for Edgar Simon, counsel to the president, and knows the inside workings of Washington and the precarious image-management duties of the First Family. But he finds himself quickly out of his depth on a date with the volatile First Daughter, Nora Hartson, when the two see Michael's boss in a gay bar. Nora insists on following the married lawyer, and the two witness Simon making a suspicious cash drop. Subsequent events link Michael to the cash and the murder of Caroline Penzler, friend of the First Lady and the lawyer who has the dirt on all the big shots. With his career, a presidential election and perhaps his life at stake, Michael cannot trust anyone, least of all Nora, who is dogged by rumors of drug use, promiscuity and general wildness. She is the only witness to his innocence, but he is intent on protecting her, and the president, from suspicion. Meltzer (The Tenth Justice; Dead Even) sprinkles his tale with many interesting details of working in and around the White House. He relies on some heavy-handed techniques to generate suspenseDMichael is always sensing someone watching him or peering through slowly opening doorsDand the plot has a familiar Hollywood ring to it. But Meltzer's relentless narrative finally digs its hooks in, and even skeptical readers will want to continue through the twists and turns, if only to confirm their own predictions. Everything to get the rest of your life organized and improve your life
By J. Schottland
This is an awesome book by the "Slob Sisters" Pam Young and Peggy Jones, authors of "Sidetracked Home Executives." This book outlines in great detail how to create a system of getting your life in order. Their first book, "Sidetracked Home Executives" is the nuts and bolts book about how to get your home cleaned and organized (for people who are not "born organized" and have a hard time with staying focused and who tend to be perfectionists and/or ADD). This book takes the same principals and applies it to the rest of your life - Love and Romance, Dreams, Prosperity, Health and Beauty, Parents and Kids, Freedom, Appreciation, Work, Laughter, Hospitality, Friendship, and Giving, and Faith (these are the final chapters of the book - taken on one month at a time). It gives great ideas for getting all those thoughts in your head down on to 3x5 cards and actually doing something about it. Using this system will help you grow more into the person that you want to be, instead of staying stagnant. The book is filled with real life examples (which I find so many self-help books are actually lacking) and lots and lots of humor. I currently have a library copy but will definitely be buying it to have on hand and actually try to start implementing slowly (baby steps!). A great addition for any Flybaby ([...]). I can't recommend this book enough!

Helps me get motivated to have a lovely home

I found this once in a library in Texas - a nice change from most organizational books. Goes month by month, and gives a different focus idea for each month. Good ideas for getting motivated, but not too much nuts and bolts - get those from other books. This is for motivation and direction.

"Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that.

Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he's never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine.

The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion).

At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, MAN SEEKS GOD presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.

Review
"Throughout this marvelously entertaining journey, precious and universal truths emerge amid the churning of Weiner's self-conscious intellect and self-deprecating sense of humor. Weiner manages to suspend disbelief long enough to share tales of divine wonders, a possibility in all of us."―Booklist (Starred Review)

"Book of the month... Much of the power of this pilgrimage comes from the characters Weiner encounters-informed, impassioned, and idiosyncratic guides who lead the ever-questioning, ever-doubting author on a magical mystery tour that illuminates our inner and outer paths."―National Geographic Traveler

"I came to Eric Weiner's MAN SEEKS GOD looking for a fight. But in the end, I didn't find the fight I was looking for; instead, I found an affable, candid, deeply thoughtful, sometimes ironic and funny soul, with whom I shared certain similarities.... In the end, despite my proclivity for theological fisticuffs, Mr. Weiner's candor and thoughtfulness were entirely disarming. Whereas some people spend a lifetime searching for their god, Mr. Weiner's whirlwind speed-dating of deities is a thing to behold. I came to admire Mr. Weiner's tenacity and verve, trotting off to places I'll likely never go -- at least not for the same reasons -- pursuing and spending long hours with the kinds of people I'll likely only meet in passing, all in an effort to better understand the world and himself and to 'find his God.'"―Pittsburgh Post Gazette

"Winsome, self-deprecating humor marks every page."
―Publishers Weekly

"Well-researched, informative and engaging, MAN SEEKS GOD is packed with facts and wisdom that, regardless of which God you root for, will leave what a Buddhist friend of Weiner's calls 'Post-it Notes on the brain.'"
―Washington Post

"It is not so much the various religions and religious practices examined that make MAN SEEKS GOD compelling, but the people Weiner encounters and spends time with as he travels around the world in search of something to fill the proverbial 'God shaped hole.'...[an] honest and neurotic, generally entertaining book."―Bookreporter.com

"Writing about spirituality is fraught with ironies: Isn't the divine supposed to be beyond words? How to describe the inner landscape without sounding insane or precious? Eric Weiner's quirky religion-hopping travelogue, MAN SEEKS GOD actually embraces these pitfalls, while poking good-natured fun at the genre.... a refreshing departure from more weighty spiritual tomes."
―San Francisco Chronicle

"In a time when many religious people insist only their own faith is valid, Weiner traveled the world in a quest for answers to spiritual questions.... Not taking himself (or others) too seriously, Weiner's travels take him to Turkey, where he whirls, dervish-style; and Las Vegas, where he encounters Raelians, who base their beliefs on UFOs. He studies Kabbalah (without Madonna) and meditates with Tibetan lamas."―New York Post

"Books about God tend to fall into two categories: objective inquiries into the nature of belief and personal tales of spiritual awakening...Weiner's 'Man Seeks God: My Flirtations with the Divine' nimbly and often hilariously straddles the fence between the two genres....He's Woody Allen channeling Karen Armstrong."
―New York Times Book Review

Dilettante Seeks Bestseller
By Danusha V. Goska
"Man Seeks God" is often a very superficial book on life's biggest, heaviest questions, and Eric Weiner, the book's author, is a relentlessly self-absorbed, elitist, dilettante, but that is exactly this book's charm. This is probably the only somewhat serious hardcover book that addresses Islam, Buddhism, Catholicism, Judaism, and Taoism that you could read straight through, and laugh at, during a long plane flight. This book is full of witty one-liners. A favorite: Taoism fills mankind's God-shaped hole with a hole-shaped God (220).

Weiner, your host through four thousand years of religions belief and practice, is quite the whiner. At the Second Coming, he'd obsess on his hangnail. At first I was shocked at how unabashedly self-absorbed he was, but his single-minded frankness wore me down. By the time he actually did write something serious about a spiritual experience he'd had - all the way on page 316 - I was moved.

Weiner is a very successful author and journalist who was hospitalized with a bad case of intestinal gas. (Really.) A nurse asked him if he had found his God yet. He realized he had not, and he set out looking.

I would give this book five stars instead of four if Weiner revealed any awareness of one feature of the book: his search is extraordinarily dilettantish and superficial. Others going in search of the deep truths have devoted years of sacrifice, study, and immersion. They travel far, live poor, study hard, test beliefs under the most demanding of conditions, seek teachers who themselves have inherited beliefs from generations, and lived their lessons under the toughest circumstances. None of that for Weiner. Though he travels to Asia and the Middle East, he never leaves the halo of a comfortable hotel room, a gourmet meal, American-born English speakers, a cold beer, and a flight out of town.

The superficiality of Weiner's quest is most glaring when it comes to Islam. Weiner has seen Islam in action, and he has come to be wary of it. To experience and assess Islam's take on the divine, Weiner travels not to Mecca, which, of course, would bar his entry - Weiner is Jewish and not allowed - nor to the self-proclaimed Islamic Republic of Iran or to the Taliban, assertive purveyors of Islam so pure they bomb Buddha statues and girls' schools, but rather to the Redwoods of California. Sufi Camp, where campers play with a mishmash of world religions and for no discernable reason label that "Islam," teaches neither Weiner nor the reader a darn single thing about Islam - if anything, he is obscuring this important topic for his reader. Weiner is writing, here, not about Islam, but about spiritually lost and self-indulgent modern Americans. Why not own up to that and write that essay, rather than pretend that you are saying something about Islam?

Weiner takes this same approach with Buddhism, Taoism, and Shamanism. Rather than traveling far and hard, studying deeply, and immersing himself in Buddhist, Taoist, and Shamanic cultures and traditions, Weiner sticks to his hotel room and ventures out for restaurant meals with Westerners who traveled to Kathmandu to dabble in Buddhism, to a mountain resort (equipped with its own mist machine) in China to mingle with well-heeled spiritual tourists who can afford tourist Taoism, and to a hotel room in a suburb of Washington, DC to play childish and transparent games meant to evoke authentic Shamanism.

Weiner presenting his trip to Kathmandu, Nepal, as a worthy intro to Buddhism struck me as particularly false. I've lived in traditional, village Nepal, studied Buddhism under a teacher who himself had inherited his knowledge from generations of Buddhists, and I can attest that Thamel, the tourist trap in Kathmandu where Weiner stayed, has as much to do with lived Nepali-Tibetan Buddhism as prostitution has to do with love.

The other religions Weiner dabbles in are dilettantish by nature: Wicca, a cobbled-together, make-it-up-as-you-go-along, recent, invention for people who found traditional religions' demands too harsh and restrictive, and Raelism, a religion invented by a French race car driver.

Weiner does make more grounded contact with two religions: Christianity and Judaism. These were the easiest for him to contact: Christians are the majority of the US population, and Weiner, born Jewish, had lived in Israel; a return trip for this book was easy. These chapters best reflect the religions they address, and they are the least flip and funny. Christianity comes off surprisingly well. Weiner stays with Franciscans who shelter indigent men and protest an abortion clinic. In Israel, Weiner visits Tzfat, aka Safed, a center of Kabbalah study.

Weiner is very easy on the religions he encounters. He wonders if Kabbalah study is not just mumbo-jumbo. I wish he had hit that question a little harder, and applied the same question to Taoism, which comes across as Yoda-speak: soulless cleverness, sophistry and platitudes. Weiner is uncomfortable with the Franciscans' anti-abortion protests. Why not pursue that discomfort with the Franciscans themselves? Ask them point blank, "What right do celibate men have to tell distressed women what to do with their own bodies?" Why not ask one Muslim, just one, about jihad?

I suspect that the answer is that Weiner sees religion the way his fans see religion: as kind of silly and not really worth much more attention or commitment than is required to write a genuinely funny, interesting, but, ultimately not very deep book.

Strong showing for Weiner's second book
By Symbiosis
Eric Weiner, self-proclaimed "gastronomical Jew" who falls somewhere nearest the atheist/agnostic end of the belief spectrum, embarks on a journey to explore religion.

The faiths he chooses to indulge range from the seemingly sublime (Buddhism and Taoism) to the ridiculous (Raelianism), with a few other odd balls (Wicca, Shamanism) and variations on old standards (Sufi Islam, Franciscan Christianity and Kabbalah Judaism) thrown in for good measure.

While there is no full-water immersion here, Weiner makes a sincere effort to dip his toes into each of these belief systems. Occasionally, he finds himself waist deep; once or twice, in over his head. That's what makes this book different and better that a mere survey of religious thought - we get the perspective of a first-hand observer who walks the walk while maintaining his objectivity and humor.

With recent studies showing that non-believers are far more informed about religion in general than are those professing a particular faith, this seems the perfect book to bridge the gaping ignorance. It's both readable and respectful.

Along with his first book, the best-selling Geography of Bliss, Weiner is defining a new, witty narrative style - more subtle, perhaps, than Bill Bryson or P.J. O'Rourke, but also frequently more substantive.

MAN SEEKS GOD is about looking for the sacred
By Bookreporter
The spiritual journey, in fiction and nonfiction, is a tried-and-true theme because religious community and spiritual experience play a large role in the lives of so many, and have for millennia. The latest author to explore this realm is Eric Weiner, whose memoir MAN SEEKS GOD is about looking for the sacred.

While in the hospital for mysterious severe abdominal pain, a nurse ominously asked him, "Have you found your God yet?" The answer was no. Rattled by the possibility of illness (it turns out he was just fine) and spooked by the question, Weiner sets out to discover a deity, or a religion in which he can find meaning and comfort. Raised a secular "gastronomical" Jew but with no emotional ties to Judaism, and wary of the term "agnostic," the world of religion was wide open to the self-proclaimed "Confusionist."

A former NPR correspondent, Weiner was comfortable traveling the world to get information and perspective, and so that is what he did. Guided by the work and biography of philosopher and psychologist William James, author of the seminal THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE, Weiner takes an experiential approach to finding God. But, ever the bibliophile, his search is informed by additional thinkers and theologians such as Ghandi, Aldous Huxley, Rumi, Lao Tzu, Rilke, Paul Tillich, Isaac Luria, and many more.

Weiner begins with Islamic mysticism, Sufism. From California to Istanbul to Konya, he ponders Sufi thought and tries to spin like the Whirling Dervishes. And while he finds beauty in the practice, Islam is not for him. He next goes to Kathmandu in search of the wisdom of Buddhist meditation, studying with a guy named Wayne and circumambulating a stupa. While he appreciates the Buddhist emphasis on compassion, he finds the religion "cold, almost clinical." And so on to a stay with some Franciscan monks in the Bronx. Chinese Taoism is one leg of the journey, and Neo-Pagan Wicca is another. There is a brief interlude with Shamanism and time at a gathering of Raëlians in Las Vegas. The Raëlians, in case you don't know, are a hedonistic UFO-based religion. Finally, Weiner finds himself in Israel learning about Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism.

MAN SEEKS GOD is interesting, but not because it illuminates religious ideas or rituals. In fact, the experiences Weiner seeks out are often mystical or in some way deviant from the mainstream. Without the context of the larger tradition that, say, Sufism is part of, the experiences are jarring. To dive headlong into Buddhist meditation is difficult enough, but to do so in order to find a spiritual home without substantial Buddhist study and context is daunting, to say the least. The enterprise of finding a religion in this way seems doomed, especially coupled with the depression Weiner suffers throughout the process. Yet the process is compelling, and Weiner, the true subject of the book, is fascinating. He is at once charming and naive, profound and whiny, funny and annoying.

In the end, no major spiritual truths are uncovered, except that maybe all religions have their amazing ideas and their silly ones. Weiner finds a renewed interest in his own Jewish heritage after gaining some interesting insights into other faiths. It is not so much the various religions and religious practices examined that make MAN SEEKS GOD compelling, but the people Weiner encounters and spends time with as he travels around the world in search of something to fill the proverbial "God shaped hole." Still, the most intriguing insights are the ones he discovers about himself in this honest and neurotic, generally entertaining book.

From Publishers Weekly
The Mamas and the Papas were a somewhat motley-looking group who sang in pleasing four-part harmony and gave voice to the feelings of many young adults in the 1960s. The musical genius behind the group was John Phillips. In 1961, before the group was formed, teenaged Michelle Gilliam met Phillips, the two fell in love, lived together and eventually married. Michelle here tells the story of her life, particularly the years with John and with The Mamas and the Papas. She tells the story engagingly, giving us excellent portraits of the group's members: the charismatic, freewheeling John; friendly Denny Doherty, with whom she had a brief affair; overweight, bright, unhappy Cass Elliott; and herself, in the center of the '60s cultural upheaval. Her autobiography is published almost simultaneously with her husband's (Papa John, reviewed in Forecasts Apr. 18). Although hers is a sanitized account compared to John's, she is more successful at putting events into historical context. Photos not seen by PW.

Mama Michelle Sets the Record Straight
By Robert L. Frazier
I have read the three definitive books on the history of the Mamas and the Papas (including "Papa John" by bandleader John Phillips and the recently published "Creeque Alley" by Matthew Greenwald) but the only book that really captured my interest and gave me a truly in-depth view into the Mamas and the Papas was the wonderful "California Dreamin'" by Michelle Phillips. I bought this book when it was first published in 1986 while I was in college. I had always loved the music of the Mamas and the Papas but I really never knew how the band got together, how their relationships fueled their music and why the group eventually disbanded. It's all here - Michelle's coming of age, her romance with John Phillips, the burgeoning New York folk scene, the first fateful meeting with Mama Cass Elliot, their vacation in the Virgin Islands and then on to California where they met record producer Lou Adler and the rest was history. I think what I enjoyed most about this book was the detailed images of what it must have been like to have lived during the late 60's - Flower Power, the hippie scene and the "Summer of Love". The relationships between the band members, especially that of Michelle and Mama Cass was especially riveting. They were very close and their friendship survived bitter jealousy and deception. I also didn't realize the impact the Mamas and the Papas had on that generation and all they accomplished in just 3 years - several hit singles, four successful albums, a Grammy Award for "Monday, Monday", sold-out concerts from The Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall and their participation (and headliners) with the Monterey Pop Festival in the Summer of 1967. I loved Michelle's writing style - you felt the gamut of emotions from her budding romance with John Phillips, her humilation of being briefly fired from the group, her enthusiasm for being a part of one of the most successful pop groups in history and, finally, the pride of having been so fortunate to have been so resilient and "better off for all you have read". I know I was!

A Weak Look Into The Mamas And The Papas
By Mr. Mark P. Callanan
I had always wanted to know more about this group
Yes I knew the music but I still wanted to know more about the group on the inside
Michelle does a decent job in giving some of the information in a very shallow way
She should of gone a lot deeper
If you are going to write as she does here you need to give all the facts and tell the whole story
I am glad I read it
After reading it I found that John Phillips had also written a book
If you want the deep facts and goings on of this this group I would say pass on this book by Michelle and Go and read Johns book
I do want to say in any case The Mamas and the Papas were a great group .....

From Publishers Weekly
Lustbader resurrects Ludlum's hero in this thriller that fails to recapture the intensity of the original but still packs plenty of punches. This time around, Jason Bourne must track down his would-be assassin, but finds himself in the middle of an investigation that could trigger a new world war. Jeremy Davidson brings the novel necessary realism with a range of believable characters. His ability to capture the subtleties of numerous accents and dialects without falling into caricature is commendable. A splendid reading of an otherwise routine action thriller. A Grand Central hardcover (Reviews, Apr. 6). (June)

I bought "The Bourne Betrayal' without realizing it was written by Eric Lustbader. When I did realize it, I was so disappointed because I couldn't imagine a "new" writer doing the series justice. It took me YEARS to finally read it. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! Upon finishing it, I immediately went to the Kindle store and bought all of the books between Ludlum's last and "The Bourne Betrayal". I've enjoyed every one. My only complaint is the author's repeated use of "d'you" no matter the nationality of the character speaking. I find it very distracting if the character is anything other than American and it kind of throws me out of the story while I go back to see who was speaking.

Very Disappointed Ludlum Fan
By Ludlum Fan
I've read all of Ludlum's books and was expecting the same high quality type of story that appeared in previous Bourne novels. This was a very 'disjointed' and difficult story to follow, and once you resumed reading after a break, it was almost impossible to recall who and how the characters fit the plot. It seemed like Bourne was an afterthought compared to some of the other characters in this book.

NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children, by Po Bronson, Ashley Merryman

One of the most influential books about children ever published, Nurture Shock offers a revolutionary new perspective on children that upends a library's worth of conventional wisdom. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis, the authors demonstrate that many of modern society's strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring--because key twists in the science have been overlooked. Nothing like a parenting manual, NurtureShock gets to the core of how we grow, learn and live.

Released in hardcover in September 2009, Nurture Shock remained on the New York Times best seller list for three months, and was one of Amazon's best selling books for 2009. The book has become a worldwide phenomenon with editions published around the world - in fifteen languages, to date.

In addition to Bronson and Merryman's writings on praise -- first made famous in New York magazine -- there are nine more equally groundbreaking chapters. Among the topics covered:

Why the most brutal person in a child's life is often a sibling, and how a single aspect of their preschool-aged play can determine their relationship as adults.

When is it too soon - or too late - to teach a child about race? Children in diverse schools are less likely to have a cross-racial friendship, not more - so is school diversity backfiring?

Millions of families are fighting to get their kids into private schools and advanced programs as early as possible. But schools are missing the best kids, 73% of the time - the new neuroscience explains why.

Why are kids - even those from the best of homes - still aggressive and cruel? The answer is found in a rethinking of parental conflict, discipline, television's unexpected influence, and social dominance.

Parents are desperate to jump-start infants' language skills. Recently, scientists have discovered a series of natural techniques that are astonishing in their efficacy - it's not baby videos, sign language, or even the richness of language exposure. It's nothing you've heard before.

From Publishers Weekly
The central premise of this book by Bronson (What Should I Do with My Life?) and Merryman, a Washington Post journalist, is that many of modern society's most popular strategies for raising children are in fact backfiring because key points in the science of child development and behavior have been overlooked. Two errant assumptions are responsible for current distorted child-rearing habits, dysfunctional school programs and wrongheaded social policies: first, things work in children the same way they work in adults and, second, positive traits necessarily oppose and ward off negative behavior. These myths, and others, are addressed in 10 provocative chapters that cover such issues as the inverse power of praise (effort counts more than results); why insufficient sleep adversely affects kids' capacity to learn; why white parents don't talk about race; why kids lie; that evaluation methods for giftedness and accompanying programs don't work; why siblings really fight (to get closer). Grownups who trust in old-fashioned common-sense child-rearing—the definitely un-PC variety, with no negotiation or parent-child equality—will have less patience for this book than those who fear they lack innate parenting instincts. The chatty reportage and plentiful anecdotes belie the thorough research backing up numerous cited case studies, experts' findings and examination of successful progressive programs at work in schools. Reviewers were generally wowed by Bronson and Merryman's breezy synthesis of the latest parenting research. They often favorably contrasted NurtureShock with traditional parenting guides, which seem old-fashioned compared with the authors' cutting-edge approach. But at least one skeptic felt that NurtureShock was just more of the same; the New York Times Book Review noted that every generation has a "revolutionary" book of parental advice, and this one may only seem novel because of a new kind of packaging. Nevertheless, even Pamela Paul found parts of the book interesting, suggesting that there may indeed be something in NurtureShock for everyone.

It's not what you think. It's more than you know.
By "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn
Parenting books are ubiquitous. How to sift through and determine which are worthy? I have a teenage daughter and have read quite a few. Even when I thought I was impressed, there was always something nagging at me about them. I determined that many of the books had an outside or hidden agenda, which was to socialize parents according to a specific sheep-herding mentality. Often, a social consciousness or a reaction to a negative social consciousness about raising children informed these "manuals." In other words, the science behind the thinking was weak--they were often politically charged or reactionary.

The blurbs about this book intrigued me, but I was also skeptical--until I read the first chapter on the inverse power of praise. Parents and guardians--just get ye to a bookstore and read the first chapter. I think you will be galvanized by its immediacy and logic (as well as back-up data) and it will inspire you to continue. It all clicked when I read about our praise-junkie tendencies, and how it has a paradoxical effect. The authors never condescend to us; they maintain that all of us want to make the best and most informed decisions. For instance, most of us start telling our babies, from the cradle "You are so smart" as almost a mantra of parenting. The authors do not criticize positive praise--they are revealing the data for specific types of praise. Telling a kid he or she is smart rather than specifically praising them for their efforts will eventually backfire. The child will have a tendency to not put out a lot of effort when they are challenged because they are stymied by the feeling that they have to stay smart, or that they must be NOT smart if they can't solve a problem or puzzle. Telling a kid (s)he is smart is praising an innate feature that is out of the child's control. Praising them for each genuine effort (whether they solved a problem or not) will have a better outcome. I cannot convey to readers the way that these authors channel and support this information--the statistical data and the entire beautiful logic of it--you must read it for yourselves.

The chapter on race relations also woke me out of a deep slumber of complacency. Too often, parents try to teach their kids equality just by placing them in diverse environments or showing them videos of multicultural friendships and cooperation. The book explicated a longitudinal study done by Dr. Bigler in Austin, Texas that revealed the lack of actual parent/child discussion on racial equality. That is the key ingredient to integration. Silence is not golden--(silence is black and white, and never the twain shall meet)--it is the wrong kind of colorblind. Just read this chapter and it will open your eyes.

Each section is such a wake-up call to parenting that I found myself reflecting on the blind spots in my own methods--not in an immolating way, but rather in an "aha!" manner. It isn't guesswork or just someone's opinion. The longitudinal studies, ongoing tests, data compilation, and control studies are explicit. But, more than that, you will feel a light bulb go off--it is seriously the most intrepid book I have ever read on parenting. No exaggeration. I can apply the book's information to my own parenting experiences and trials and realize how on the mark these studies are.

There is a chapter on sleep--its bearing and consequences on child performance, on obesity, and on mood. This section alone is worth the price of the book. I learned which parts of the sleep cycle are integral to the storage of which information. They describe the parts of the brain being affected when information is received and when sleep is disrupted. But, more importantly, the authors lay out the pitfalls of losing just 15 minutes or an hour of sleep--so many teenage problems are associated with this that some trailblazing schools are finally arranging the hours of education based on these studies. But more schools need this call to action. And we need to encourage a positive sleep pattern with our children. I know this sounds de rigueur and obvious. But this chapter on sleep is way more comprehensive than anything I have read before, and profound. Almost everything in the quality of your children's lives depends on it.

One of my favorite sections was the one that is like a riptide into everything you thought you knew about your child's language acquisition. Baby Einstein? Fuhgettaboutit. And don't try teaching your children a foreign language by popping in a Spanish DVD and parking them in front of the TV. Not going to happen. As a matter of fact, it will have a deleterious effect. A child needs a "live" person to learn. Additionally, it is the call and response between parent and baby that is the key to increasing their vocabulary and comprehension. Baby Einstein videos are like disembodied voices that do absolutely zip for their education. Sesame Street in Spanish is just as ineffective. Please read the chapter--the whole controversy is revealed when the studies proved that these baby videos are empty and hollow forms of education.

Perhaps my personal favorite is the chapter on teen rebellion. I recognize the arguing and lying of children in a whole new way now. How and why children cultivate what we think of as egregious behaviors usually stems from a psychologically astute and desirable place in their hearts and growth. It is the same with arguing. We need to shed our preconceptions and outmoded concerns about teen compliance, obedience, and integrity and understand the necessary steps in their development. There is a paradox about child/teen lying--it is expected, but it still must be dealt with.

And there is more--sibling rivalry, IQ testing, testing for elite schools at an early age, self-control, and playing well with others are covered immaculately.

Yes, it will blow the lid off, turn upside down just about everything previously advocated in parenting books. But not in a confounding way. That is an important ingredient to consider. This book, the way I perceive it, is not intended to upset or horrify you or derail your parenting experience. (Although, by its very nature it does derail previous long-held concepts, but in a compassionate way.) As a matter of fact, it provided clarity into numerous bogus concepts and the pious conditioning that we have been hanging onto for years. Additionally, it offers specific practices and interventions that can be measured rather swiftly in your own home with these changes to your personal parenting skills. As much as this book "shocks," it is not intimidating or finger-pointing at parents (although it does point a finger into disingenuous studies). The accessible and engaging flow of narrative is dotted with levity, lightness, and always benevolence. I read this book in just a few sittings and I retained the information well. It is easy to go back and reference what you read, as the chapters are laid out in an explicit, user-friendly manner.

Slide your other parenting books to the side of the shelf and place this one squarely in the middle. I acknowledge this book as a parenting imperative. Read it and leap.

A Useful and Flawed Update on Notions of Child Rearing
By Smith's Rock
NurtureShock, Bronson and Merryman's book about misplaced assumptions in the rearing of children is a worthwhile read for any parent. More a guide for critical thinking about our somewhat whacked out approach to child raising in America (reserving spots in elite preschools before a child is even born) than a guide to raising children, the book presents fresh data, surprising conclusions, and frequent cautions about old assumptions.

NurtureShock joins a new mini-genre of literature that sells by turning old assumptions on their heads, and making us question what we once thought was surely true. Also in this category is Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.) and Outliers: The Story of Success.

The book is highly entertaining, and impossible to read without a number of "Ah Hah!" moments, but does have limitations. While presenting powerful evidence that it is best not to dole out generic praise by the boxcar load to children (it actually impairs their performance) the book is at its best. Teachers, by the way, have known this for decades, and good teachers transformed long ago from non-specific cheerleaders (You're doing great!!) to more specific statements ("I like the way you stuck with that math problem until you figured it out"). Similarly, teachers have been acquainted for years with another theme of the book: academic skill testing done prior to the third grade correlates very poorly with academic performance down the line.

The authors question many of the programs that have been used to ramp up child performance, such as the Baby Einstein materials, and in doing so demonstrate how little evidence (if any!) provides a foundation for products that hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on. What the authors don't question is the concept of performance enhancement itself. In the area of language development, the authors spend a considerable amount of time describing flawed and ineffective (but expensive)programs to get babies on the fast track to linguistic mastery. They then go on to propose that there are a bunch of NEW ways to stimulate language development, giving only weak evidence that transferring from the old and goofy ways of getting babies to articulate precociously to the new and spiffy ways (based on the inevitable fMRI studies of brain function)has statistically significant long term beneficial results. Though the authors don't discuss it, there is good evidence that one of the simplest of interventions of all, having family dinners together every night with the TV off (only about 20% of American families regularly do this now) has a very measurable effect on fluency AND on reading and writing skills.

Again, the book is a great read, and obviously quite inspiring to many of its readers that have posted five star reviews. It runs the risk, however, of perpetuating the notion that children will end up working at McDonalds for a profession instead of becoming a neurosurgeon if parents don't man the neurobiological/behavioral battle stations from about ten weeks after fertilization of the ovum onward. While the authors shred older concepts of ramped up child rearing, they then jump in with both feet on their chosen NEW concepts of ramped up child rearing. What does a ten thousand foot overview of childhood development strategies say? The best evidence implies that the book you want to read if you want your child to become a highly functioning and happy adult is....To Kill a Mockingbird. Raise your girl like Atticus Finch raised Scout, and your boy the way he raised Jem: have dinner with them every night. Discuss current events. Read to your children at bedtime. Speak clearly about your values (compare Atticus Finch's approach to the problem of racism to the methods suggested in NatureShock). Make them play outside on a regular basis. Make them go to bed on time, after you make them do their homework. Not very glitzy, is it? A bit labor intensive, maybe? But find a mentor teacher, or a great pediatrician, and my bet is they'll place their money on Scout and Jem to succeed best in the long run.

The so-called Greatest Generation, which built the world's most powerful economy, made American Nobel Peace Prizes a matter of routine, and vaulted the U.S. to superpower status, did it without the benefit of scripting every verbal encounter, restructuring a walk in the park to an opportunity to improve vocabulary, and becoming adept at responding to a baby's babbles with a predetermined choreography of behaviors. Our drive to be the best parents that we can be is powerful and admirable. We want to do it right. To date, the most effective way of getting there appears to be setting some rules and sticking to them (the authors do discuss this), regular quality communication, quality AND quantity time spent together, frankness regarding values (e.g. racism)and carefully allowing experiences that are painful or challenging enough to cause growth. Atticus Finch used these techniques, and single parent though he was, gave us Scout and Jem.

How Children Work
By Wende Mate
I learned to cast a suspicious eye toward some who are regarded as childhood "experts" after getting to know the adult offspring of a few prominent figures in the field who were navigating adulthood with considerably more difficulty than the average person. So I particularly like the holes that Bronson and Merryman poke in some of the previously accepted academic theories and trends in child development. I also think that some of the "new" academic data presented in the book is something that many parents will simply (and hopefully) recognize as common sense.

The chapters in the book are all very interesting, covering babies and teens and much of the in between. The chapter on testing for giftedness, which has become a hot button topic of late, is very thought-provoking. I agree with the authors that most gifted programs have run badly amok, but as one who had many years of experience at a private school for highly gifted children, I know that there are children who, in an average school environment, would be teased mercilessly for their ability to relate better to numbers and books than to their classmates. For highly gifted girls in particular, a school such as that can be a very safe place for them to be very smart.

The chapters on false praise, sibling rivalry, teen rebellion and overly-involved parenting speak more to an affirmation of common sense wisdom than to academic breakthroughs, but the research and studies are fun to read nonetheless. The chapters on race, sleep and lying are quite thought-provoking. Overall, the book is well written (not in florid or garbled academia-speak), very well researched, and the authors succeed in offering quite a few new, and fun, things to learn about children.

Gaither Family Christmas Reflections
By Orville B. Jenkins
The subtitle expresses the focus of the book: "A Treasury of Gaither Christmas Songs, Reflections and Holiday Traditions." Gloria recounts family experiences around their Christmas celebrations. These join her thoughtful and creative reflections on the Bible stories of the birth of Jesus, including related perspectives from various family experiences.

Gloria writes these reflections around her actual compositions from the Gaither family experiences over a 40-year period. The included CD presents 10 of these songs, a pleasant addition to the Christmas collection in my CD rack and on my computer.

I was impressed with how well-read she is in a wide range of contemporary and classical authors and topics. She draws upon insights from a wide range of teachers and writers. Gloria's meditations are not deeply theological in the abstract, but she focuses on life-skill meanings of faith.

While this was not particularly intellectually rewarding, I found her reflections a welcome relief from the sometimes stultifying formalized views that force faith into the stratosphere. Gloria is grounded in real life, around the ho9me and family, where the key decisions of life are considered, determined and evaluated.

Some readers will be pleased at the surprising last section of the book, a collection of Gaither family recipes for the Christmas season. I found the work somewhat homey and nostalgic, without being sentimental.
