Bet Yeager's shady past remains a carefully guarded secret aboard the Union spaceship Loki until an encounter with Mazian pirates forces her to reveal her intimate knowledge of their methods. Set in the same universe as Cyteen ( LJ 5/15/88), Cherryh's latest novel captures the acute sense of claustrophobia of men and women under pressure. Recommended.-- JC

Best space marine novel ever
By Daniel S. Palter
This may just be the best space marine novel ever written. Its part of a series but you don't need the other books to follow it. Its a simple story but the characters are complex and twisty. It explores the meanings of loyalty, of memory, of how social bonds are forged and broken. The dynamic between Bet and Fitch in the final combat are exquisite. Two bitter enemies forced to be on the same side and Miz. Cherryh makes the tension work. Its a pity she no longer writes this series. If you try this one and like it you should also buy Tripoint and Merchanter's Luck.

The strongest woman hero ever to appear in science fiction!
By A Customer
If you have ever wished for a "classic" science fiction action adventure novel with a female lead... this is it. Bet Yeager (our hero) is a combat soldier who has been separated from her unit and must find her own way in enemy space. From the very first pages, Yeager is relentlessly focused, unshakeably stubborn, and merciless in the face of attack. She finds allies, but needs no one to rescue her. She can be friendly, but she has never simpered or batted her eyelashes in her life. Yeager is the strongest woman character I have ever met & the book is worth a read for that alone. As always, Cherryh's writing gives you a world (and a character) to fall into. This is my favorite of all of Cherryh's science fiction novels.

One of my favorites...
By N. Trachta
Something that I love is a good space opera where the characters are strong and the action is good; and Rimrunners is one of these. Ahhh, I love it, Ms. Cherryh expands her Alliance Space Universe by telling us the story of a former Company Fleet Marine (Elizabeth Yeager) who's trying to get back to the Fleet. However Bet is at the armpit of Alliance Space, Thule station, and she's looking for anyway off station that will take her closer to The Company Fleet. What makes for a strong story is that Ms. Cherryh takes a slightly different approach from other writers with this story by having Bet Yeager being homeless (she's living on the docks of Thule, in the bathrooms we're told) and describes Bet's situation and feelings almost like you're traveling with her. Merging Bet's "situation" with an opportunity to escape Thule on an Alliance ship (Loki, she's "more than she seems") makes for an interesting set of situations for Bet who has to confront her past with her present.

Rating wise this one's a very solid 4.5-5 star book for me. I love the action and the set-up. The characters are nicely done with Ms. Cherryh breathing so much life into Bet Yeager, NG, and the other characters. When you find tertiary character (Mr. Finch, , or even Wolf) who add their print to a book, you have to love it. Merging this with the strength of Ms. Cherryh's Alliance Space Universe make this a space opera that I love to come back and read again and again. Five stars for me or anyone who enjoys CJ Cherry's stories.

Annie Laird is Juror 224. A sculptor with a career going nowhere. A single mother struggling to raise a son. A good citizen who has been summoned to what looks like a rountine tour of civic duty. But the trial she is called to serve on is no ordinary trial. It is a mob trial, whose outcome has been meticulously orchestrated by a man of insidious power and deadly precision. A man who lives by the teachings of Lao Tsu...whose magnetism is irresistible...whose mind is as brilliant as it is twisted. He is know to some as the Teacher, and he's set his sights on Annie Laird.

Pulled into the most chilling depths of the criminal underworld, Annie will be seduced by double-edged promises, stalked by the spector of terror, then, finally, driven to a shocking decision by the most basic motivation a woman can know. THE JUROR is a tour de force of crime and obsession, evil and innocence -- a story that taps into fears so primal they linger long after the last page has been read.

From Publishers Weekly
Single mother and struggling sculptress Annie Laird makes a huge mistake when she joins the jury at the Westchester murder trial of mob boss Louie Buffano. Immediately, Annie is contacted by "the Teacher," the sleek, Lao Tse-quoting eminence grise behind Buffano, who makes it clear that life, and that of her son Oliver, depend on her saying two words: "Not guilty." And so begins Green's (The Caveman's Valentine) masterfully manipulative thriller, a gem of deft plotting given added lustre through its rich, if not wholly cohesive, characterizations. Annie is an especially fine creation, victimized by her whipsawing emotions as she panics, rebels, crosses her conscience and plots to trap the Teacher. The Teacher is equally complex, an utterly logical madman whose portrait is flawed only by his unlikely romantic obsession with Annie (Buffano alone is a throwaway character, too clearly modeled on John Gotti). The plot, jittering from one brutal, clever twist to the next, will keep readers in a cold sweat. Green pushes buttons without remorse, always keeping his finger poised above the one marked "Oliver's death"-and as it descends at book's end, the tension is nearly unbearable. 200,000 first printing; major ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Main Selection; audio rights to Time Warner AudioBooks.

From Library Journal
Annie Laird is a single mother, a part-time data entry clerk, an aspiring sculptor, and a juror selected for the murder trial of a mob boss. When a suave, handsome art broker buys some of her work and then invites her to dinner, she thinks her luck may be changing. Her supposed admirer, a Wall Street financier and Taoist nicknamed "The Teacher," is actually the brains behind the jailed mobster. The Teacher is incredibly charming; he's also a vicious killer. He promises Annie the continued safety of her son and the assurance of a lucrative artistic career in exchange for help in acquitting the mobster. But even if Annie agrees to the plan, she and her son may not be safe because the Teacher soon discovers he's in love with her. This novel by the author of The Caveman's Valentine (LJ 12/93) is less a courtroom drama than a gripping psychological cat-and-mouse game. It should be in very high demand in public libraries.
Charles Michaud, Turner Free Lib., Randolph, Mass.

From Booklist
Annie Laird and her adolescent son, Oliver, lead average lives. Annie is struggling financially and artistically, earning money as a data-entry clerk during the day so she can sculpt at night. Oliver enjoys computer games and has a crush on his mother's best friend. Both of them have fantasies of a better life, but not the life they are about to live. Immediately after Annie is accepted as a juror for a famous Mafia case, a mysterious, sexy businessman pays $12,000 for three of her works, with the promise of further purchases. And before the initial thrill of success wears off, Annie discovers that Vincent, aka "the Teacher," doesn't need Annie's artwork. What he needs is an acquittal for his Mob-boss friend. And if he doesn't get it, well, he'll kill Oliver. A fair exchange. Watching Annie's every move, the Teacher comes to know what she will do even before she does it. In fact, he dictates through threats and pyschological games exactly what she will do. With her options disappearing before her eyes, Annie tries frantically to protect her son and escape the clutches of a very disturbed individual. But she can't outsmart this guy--she's got to kill him. A thrilling climax in Guatemala wraps everything up satisfactorily. The big publicity campaign will result in demand. Kathy Broderick

Fantastic
By Adelene C. KIRBY
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and I read all the time. It keeps one riveted to the story right to the last word. I was actually trembling when I finished it, I was so engrossed. It is a wonderful, fabulous book without peer. I highly recommend it. I was delighted to see that there was a movie of this story, and I immediately ordered it from Amazon. I haven't watched it yet, but found that the casting was very close to the characters that I pictured as I read the book. You will never regret buying this book. It is fabulous, fantastic, riveting, and exciting.

Entertainment with a little extra
By Barbara Klein
This novel doesn't pretend to be anything other than a diversion. It gives the reader exactly what he bargained for. Beyond that the book provides a deeper level of characterization than you usually find in such novels. I particularly enjoyed how attractive the author made the villain. It added an element of excitement. I also liked the way the main character faced up to the private quality of her trendy art boxes. On the other hand, I found the young boy's sexual obsession with the juror's girlfriend odd and out of place. It was kind of distateful without contributing anything to the plot. That is just a quibble however, this is a good airplane novel.

The most truthful book a girl can ask for! Could not put down!
By Sue Elvins
I love every chapter in this book as it speaks volumes to me. I used to work in a corporate office as a programmer. Knowing what I know from working in that environment, it was like she had been working beside me for years! This explained a lot of issues to me which I did not know as I never worked in corporate before. Now that I am advancing on skill and education, this book has given me confidence on managing issues in my career and "not acting like a girl".

This is a must have for anyone who thinks they can get into upper management by a blink of their eyelashes or brushing their hair back like a Cover Girl model. It doesn't work that way folks. To make it in the corporate world, a woman needs to know how to do it correctly and by all means she needs to earn her way up that corporate ladder to the larger pay scale.

excellent guide
By E.M. Bristol
If you're like me, you have memories of the boys talking more in class (all the way up the ladder), and taking the lead when it came to doing group work (especially science). This does not end once you graduate and enter the workforce. Frankel in this book lays out the ways women sabotage themselves unintentionally when attempting to get ahead in the business world. Some of these tips, you will have heard before, others will be new.

Women grow up being conditioned to be good, unselfish and cooperative, traits that can both help and hinder career success. They may need help in realizing that this can undermine the impression they are trying to create, and this book does a good job of that. Topics range from "Obediently Following Instructions" to "Grooming in Public." Some suggestions will sound sexist, but are accurate. Recommended.

  • - Voice of an Angel: My Life, So Far

From Publishers Weekly
Fifteen-year-old Charlotte Church is an international sensation whose first album went double platinum and topped the British classical music charts. She's also a normal teenager who still goes to school and stays up all night gossiping and eating candy when her three best friends sleep over. In Voice of an Angel: My Life So Far, she provides these and other glimpses of her everyday life and recounts her humble childhood in Wales (her father is a former factory laborer), as well as her thrilling rise to stardom and brushes with famous people throughout the world. Raised Catholic, she describes meeting the pope in reverential terms, but she has also met Bill Clinton, Prince Charles and the Queen of England. Her fans will welcome this surprisingly sincere and down-to-earth autobiography.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Despite some flaws in this purportedly autobiographical rendering of the 15-year-old's family life and performance career to date, this book should enjoy a wide audience. Teens may find sufficient intrigue in the anecdotes, in Church's likes and dislikes, as well as in her thumbnail impressions of contemporary entertainers and international dignitaries to overcome the heavy sense of editorial handling that imbues the text. Readers are first introduced to the singer's childhood in Wales and to the texture of her family relationships, along with comments on each relative's influence upon her rapidly developing career. Selected photographs convey a further sense both of her family circle and of the youthful age at which she signed a contract with Sony Music to become a talent with global visibility. Many girls will relate to the mayhem surrounding the "wardrobe crisis incident." And any student who has taken music lessons, vocal or instrumental, will enjoy the passages about Lulu, Church's voice coach, whose no-nonsense approach to training is depicted as combining discipline with liberal doses of humor and affection. To enrich an appreciation of the story, encourage readers to play a recording of the 1998 double platinum album Voice of an Angel while reading this book.

A Shameful Composition
By Mike Logan
As a one-time Charlotte Church fan, I was expecting to learn something I didn't know about Charlotte, from this reading experience. However, instead of any career revelations, I was only given an insight into the dark side of her personality. To begin with, at 15, there hasn't been enough of a life experience to justify an autobiography. That's why no one else has ever attempted that at the age of 15. However, to the extent that she has had experiences, this book only serves to summarize that which has already been revealed in her TV interviews, website trivia, and CD liner notes. She attempts to embellish upon that with facts and anecdotes about people in her life. However these people appear no more remarkable than those of you who are reading this review. Charlotte attempts to try and convince us that because these relationships were hers, that they are more
special than the rest of us would enjoy. In fact,I found her entire approach to this work surrounded with an aura of conceit; a trait not unnoticed by the London Times which credited her with "the most lethal ego since Descartes".
However, with what has been speculated to have been an attempt by Charlotte to spice up an otherwise dull bio, possibly required by the publisher, she reaches an all-time low in autobios when she reveals info early on about her parents, which otherwise should have been left alone. These items include 1) inferences that her mother was promiscuous, 2) doubts regarding the virtues of her own origin, 3) the fact that her father had to be dragged out of a pub by her aunt across the street to complete the wedding ceremony with her mother 4) demeaning statements about her father's ability as a Rugby player, when in fact he was actually National Class. These were items that no one needed to know and should have been left within the family.
Another book agenda item appears at the very end of the book where she discusses her experiences on the Heroes For The Planet Show. Its noteworthy that her Voice of an Angel Concert which really launched her career here in the U.S. via PBS is barely touched upon in the book, while she takes 4 pages in an attempt to glorify the HFTP Show. The promotion for the HFTP Show was in fact so controversial (some referred to it as fraudulent) that it sent her CD sales into a tailspin from which they have never fully recovered.
People Magazine rated this book as one of the worst for 2001 in its year-ending issue, and I would concur wholeheartedly with that opinion.
In conclusion, the only people to whom I would recommend purchasing this book are A) Those contemplating an unauthorized bio of Charlotte, 2) Disciples of Descartes, & 3) The incorrigibly curious, who cannot otherwise locate a copy at their local library. My recommendation to the above is to take advantage of the $6.99 used book price here. Distribution has ceased at retail outlets and a used book reads just as good as a new one.

Middle School Medioctity
By Dixie Chrystal
The best way to describe Charlotte Church's Autobiography is a diary by a school-girl. There is nothing spectacular about this work and if graded by a teacher in school as a composition, in an English class, would probably get a "C". This work just seems to ramble on about anything and everything that ever came into this girls life. She talks about a lot of people including relatives and those who have been involved with her musically or in support of her music. She attempts to grab the readers interest by shamelessly exposing certain, otherwise private, moments in her parents life, and then attempting to make jest of everything. There have obviously been some negative experiences in her life like her change in management, but she just jumps over that leaving the reader wondering when her "Unauthorized Biography" will be coming out. She seems extremely confident in her discussion of just about everything; a confidence which appears to be tantamount to conceit. The major question with which I am still perplexed is why would a girl of 15 be writing an Autobiography? It is doubtful that this book will sell many copies for the simple reason that it doesn't tell anyone anything they probably 1) don't already know or 2) need to know.
It will interesting to see if, in 10 years, Miss Church has improved her writing ability and is willing to share ALL of her experiences, good or bad. That is assuming that in 10 years, anyone still wants to know.

Hmmm.... interesting...
By The Surreal Deal
Well, I can say that this book did nothing for me. I'm sorry to be harsh, but the tone was whiney, and implied "See? I'm better than all of you but I still like sleepovers!" In short, after reading this book, I kicked over a crate of them at a [local] bookstore...

It Happened One Night - Lisa Dale
By A. Schreiner
Lana and Eli have been best friends for ten years. The absolute best of friends, having only stepped over the friendship line once in college. That night they gave into temptation and slept together, however, Lana is so terrified to lose Eli, the next night she pretends to seduce someone else to scare Eli away. Their friendship survives that night, however and since then, Lana has gone through many boyfriends, most recently Ron, who accidently gets her pregnant. Ron is the type of boyfriend who stops by on a whim when he is in town, and he doesn't show up again. Lana confides in Eli, terrified to tell her sister who is desperate herself to have a baby. Lana herself is terrified to have a baby and doesn't think she will make a good mother. Eli is in love with Lana and has been for a long time but now that she is pregnant, he doesn't know if this is the time to tell her.

I rarely read straight-up contemporaries but I have to say It Happened One Night was a nice change of pace. Lana had a rough childhood - her mother died when she was young and Lana and her sister, Karin, move into the boarding house her father owned. Karin ends up raising her, since her father bascially makes sure they were fed and clothed and that is it. Except for her sister, who is extremly overbearing, Lana has been left by everyone she thought loved her. Now as an adult, deep down she still has that fear. She has stayed at her sister's farm more out of feeling she owes her sister something while all Lana wants to do is explore the world and go on an adventure. Ironically, she pushed Eli away in college and now Eli travels the world.

Let's talk about Eli for a moment. I love my alpha men, but I have a special place in my heart for betas. I made Marcus Worth from Kate Noble's Revealed, and Harry Valentine from Julia Quinn's What Happens In London scoot over to make room for Eli. He is such a cute beta hero and I totally fell in love with him. He is the sweetest person - so in love with Lana but never finding the courage to tell her. His internal emotional turmoil when he finds out Lana is pregnant by another man is so raw, but he holds it all in to make Lana's life easier. He is there as a shoulder for Lana to cry on, when all he wants to do is give her a happily ever after. When he does admit his feelings- when the romance between them has a chance to grow, it is some of the sweetest pages I have read. His love for her was so intense, you just want to push Lana towards him knowing he will make her happy for the rest of his life.

There were a few times Lana overplayed the "friend" card and I wish she would have given in to her feelings for Eli sooner. However, her not giving in gave the book a build up of tension and I found myself sneaking peeks ahead to see when they would finally be together. Yes, I peek, and I'm not ashamed! Not only do Eli and Lana have to sort out their friends vs. lovers feelings, but they also have to deal with the fact that Lana is pregnant with another man's baby. My favorite moment from the book is when Eli confesses his love to Lana, and she realizes it is not just her and Eli in this equation, but the baby inside of her too:

She stepped away from him, got her bearings. As she looked down-to make some distance between them if only for a moment-the curve of her belly was there, round as the curve of the overhead sky. It came as a surprise to remember reality. She put a hand on the crest of the half-sphere, felt the warmth coming from her own skin.

She looked up at him, the question on her lips far too complicated to speak.

"I know," he said.

Oh Eli.

The secondary story of Lana sister, Karin also added to the emotions in this book. You could feel the panic coming off of Karin to get pregnant. I thought her desperation to have a baby, which leads to thoughts of adopting Lana's baby for herself was a little much though. Her character is a wonderfully written flawed character- controlling with bursts of rage and I felt that was enough to bring to the story. I loved that Karin stays consistent throughout the story, almost a character you don't want to like, but works it works really well in this setting.

The addition of Lana and Karin's father who comes back to town didn't do a lot of me either. At first he acts very creepy and I wasn't sure as a reader where his path was going. He turns out to be just a lonely father, but I didn't ever feel a connection with him and his daughters. He wronged them in the past, and I think he would have been better staying there.

Lisa Dale is a new author to me, but I am definitely sticking with her. It Happened One Night is a delightful, romantic story that I highly recommend.

fascinating Vermont contemporary extended family drama
By A Customer
Lana Biel dreams of seeing the world, but is devoted to helping her married sister Karin run their wildflower farm. Karin dreams of having a family but so far has not conceived. Lana ponders over living in Burlington and realizes she is not living her dream, but that of Karins'; she wants out without hurting her sibling but has no way to do so.

Lana becomes pregnant, but has doubts about raising a child especially as a single mom; besides she fears an infant will nuke her plans to leave Vermont. She turns to her best Eli Ward for advice as she has already ruled out an abortion. However, Eli has his own issue as he wants to tell Lana he loves her, but fears his revelation could result in the end of their friendship.

This is a fascinating Vermont contemporary extended family drama that is wildflower refreshed by the two sisters, who are realistic especially with their self indulgent whines (somewhat overdone with no cheese) making both of them not particularly likable. They make the tale as ironically Eli is a likable player, but seems underdeveloped. Not an easy read, It happened One Night is a deep look at what happens to people when dreams are not fulfilled and even when they are.

Excellent follow-up!
By K. Matrisch
Lisa Dale writes the books that I wish I could. I don't know what it's like to go through a pregnancy, but I felt like I did with the novel's heroine Lana Biel. What I love about Dale's writing is that she crafts realistic romances, but the romances aren't the focal point of the story, IMO. This and her debut Simple Wishes are women's fiction. If you're a person who just can't get into romances, then buy this book because you're into strong feminine characters and want a female to cheer on. Dale won't disappoint; just buy her novels already :)

The New York Times bestselling author of The Millionaires and The First Counsel returns to Wash-ington, D.C., with the story of an insider's game that turns deadly. Matthew Mercer and Harris Sandler are best friends who have plum jobs as senior staffers to well-respected congressmen. But after a decade in Washington, idealism has faded to disillusionment, and they're bored. Then one of them finds out about the clandestine Zero Game. It starts out as good fun-a simple wager between friends. But when someone close to them ends up dead, Harris and Matthew realize the game is far more sinister than they ever imagined-and that they're about to be the game's next victims. On the run, they turn to the only person they can trust: a 16-year-old Senate page who can move around the Capitol undetected. As a ruthless killer creeps closer, this idealistic page not only holds the key to saving their lives, but is also determined to redeem them in the process. Come play The Zero Game-you can bet your life on it.

From Publishers Weekly
Meltzer credits 143 people in his acknowledgments, a testament to massive research involving everything from the smallest details of our government's inner workings to the scientific complexities of chaos theory and advanced neutrino research. He's far too seasoned a pro (The Tenth Justice; The Millionaires) to ever let readers bog down in minutiae, though, using his impressive background material as rocket fuel for this rip-roaring novel of government intrigue. Best friends Matthew Mercer and Harris Sandler have worked for years as professional Capitol Hill staffers. With boredom and burnout threatening, they've joined a secret group of other like-minded workers to play the Zero Game, which uses congressional voting and government administrative procedure as the basis for placing bets. "We don't change the laws, or pass bad legislation, or stroke our evil goatees and overthrow democracy as we know it. We play at the margins; where it's safe-and where it's fun." The two decide to bet their life savings when a seemingly innocent appropriations item, the sale of an abandoned South Dakota gold mine, becomes part of the game. Because of his senior position as an appropriations committee staffer, Matthew is sure he has a lock on this one. Things go horribly wrong, and soon Harris and Viv Parker, a young Senate page, are on the run, fleeing from hired killer Martin Janos. Their flight takes them to the abandoned gold mine, where they find more mystery and near death 8,000 feet below the surface of the earth. Janos, their nemesis, is relentless, as is the action, and readers will be left breathless.

From Booklist
When Matthew Mercer confides to his best friend, Harris Sandler, that he's thinking of leaving his cushy job as a senior staffer on Capitol Hill, Harris convinces him to stay by inviting him to play the Zero Game, an anonymous wagering game where you bet on the likelihood of some piece of legislation passing. It's a silly game, but the stakes are minimal, so Matthew joins in, enjoying the diversion and finding the anonymity intriguing. The bet in front of them now is a gimme, especially since Matthew can control its outcome, so the pair decides to up the ante and go for broke. Trouble is, there's another bidder out there (Who else could have such an interest?), and both Matthew and Harris sense that this bet just might be their last. They've learned the hard way that there's no one they can trust and have no choice but to find out who's behind the now-murderous game. Coming to their aid is an unlikely savior, a teenage Senate page who can duck in and out of private offices without raising suspicion. Packed with plenty of backroom D.C. ambience and lots of action, the novel also boasts improved plotting and character development since Meltzer's last high-concept best-seller, The Millionaires (2001). No Zero Here
By Jamie S. Rich
It's tough to review a Brad Meltzer book. Any discussion of the plot is going to give too much away. Over drinks, I was attempting to tell a friend about THE ZERO GAME. She hadn't started reading it yet, and I was midway through. "Oh, you're going to love it," I said. "The premise alone is enough to hook you."
"Don't tell me," she said.
"No, no, seriously," I pushed. "I won't ruin it. You see, these guys who work in congress as aides and stuff, they have this game. It's super secret, and they bet on legislation, guessing the outcome of votes and stuff."
"That's too much, stop."
"Well, you can imagine from that all the different ways Meltzer can take it."
"Seriously. I don't want to know anymore."
"No," I said. "You don't get it. That's information you get just on the first ten pages. I didn't spoil anything. The book is packed with twists and turns, probably more than any of Brad's other books. By page fifty, you're going to be so sucked in; you're never going to want to put it down."
And it's true. In the first fifty pages of a 460-page thriller, there is already one turn of events so shocking that you start the next chapter fully expecting to discover Meltzer is messing with you. "No," you say, "he CAN'T do that." But he does! And at that point, THE ZERO GAME is just getting revved up. The rest of the novel is a mad, breathless dash to find the answer to the sort of convoluted plot only people who are part of the US government could dream up!
THE ZERO GAME is full of Meltzer's usual narrative tricks. Shifting points-of-view, untrustworthy characters that switch allegiances at the flip of a page, young idealists, and a hero (or two) pushed out of their comfort zone, suddenly finding themselves on a run for their lives, having to scramble to find the strength and skill to survive. It boggles my mind that there hasn't yet been a movie adaptation of one of Brad's books. THE ZERO GAME was easily more exciting than any modern film I saw last year. It's a popcorn thriller, an action-packed suspense story that doesn't need special effects or the chiseled features of a $20M paycheck to excite. Proof positive that there's nothing like a good book to get the imagination--and the adrenaline--pumping.

A trivial game turns deadly.
By E. Bukowsky
Matthew Mercer and Harris Sandler work on Capitol Hill. Matthew is an assistant to a Congressman, and Harris is the youngest chief of staff ever hired by a Senator. Both young men are very bright, but they are a bit bored and looking for some laughs. They decide to play "The Zero Game," in which they place bets on their ability to push through meaningless pieces of legislation. No one gets hurt, the guys can make a few bucks, and it's all in good fun. Unfortunately for Mercer and Sandler, there's more to the "zero game" than meets the eye. The seemingly trivial pursuit proves to be extremely dangerous for its participants.
Brad Meltzer, the author of "The Zero Game," does well when he discusses the inner workings of Congress, especially the machinations of lobbyists, the horse trading that occurs during appropriations meetings, and the quid pro quos that grease the wheels of politics.
Unfortunately, it takes more than this to make a successful political thriller. The plot of "The Zero Game" is both far-fetched and repetitious. Brad Meltzer has written a book of over four hundred and fifty pages, with numerous descriptions of one chase sequence after another.
To his credit, Meltzer's good guys, Harris and Vivian Parker, a seventeen-year-old Senate page, are affable, intelligent, and engaging characters. They are tough and idealistic, and they put up a good fight. It is also refreshing that Meltzer does not include a hokey romantic subplot in this novel. However, the villains are straight out of central casting, the dialogue is stilted, and the unrealistic story goes on far too long. As a political thriller, "The Zero Game" ultimately misses the mark.

Meltzer is getting better and better...
By Robert Wellen
I read the Millionaires first, which despite it's absurd ending, I enjoyed. I read First Counsel(which honestly did not stay very long in my mind) and The Tenth Justice next (have not read Dead Even) and it was clear that Meltzer had a ways to go--good ideas, some sloppy execution...however, if you line up the books in the order they written, he has grown. This was a really interesting and original story. The best part of the book is the "game" (hilarious and ingenious) and the inside look at Congress (his research is outstanding). The characters, Matthew, Viv, and Harris are among his best. It is cool see a multicultural cast of characters. The problem? Well, the biggest was the fact that the two chase scenes are FAR too long. He had this problem in other books, but these went on and on. It would have been better to hear more about the Midas Project (I need to be vague so as not to ruin the book) and the political stories behind it. I would have enjoyed more character driven issues and less running around. And, as another reviewer so smartly noted, the dust jacket gets many things wrong--particularly Viv's age--which is 17, not 16. I must commend Meltzer on his restraint in plot twists--there is a whopper early on--but he uses them wisely--another sign of growth. I hear he has recently moved to Florida. I hope he does not lose his ear for the political or urban thriller.

Female women are back; just-like-a-man is out. Don't be a goody-goody; knock 'em dead instead. Here in part is the message of this lively and unsparing guide for the '90s by Redbook's editor-in-chief, who isn't afraid to talk about herself and the secrets of her success. Citing surveys, academic studies, the ways of 40 other successful women and her own rollicking career triumphs, White proclaims a new outlook for traditionally self-effacing "good girls" in today's workplace. To offset dwindling male "guerrilla chauvinism," she advises women not to take setbacks personally but to "get some zip," focus on the work, dare to wear (borrowed) $400 dresses to crucial meetings and (secretly) study their own miens and mannerisms on videotape; plus many more tips.

From the Back Cover
For years Kate White lived as a good girl - a rule follower, a people pleaser, a busy beaver - until she was passed over for the job of editor-in-chief of a magazine she had been running for months. She finally realized that being gutsy, not good, was the only way to succeed. And did she ever! Kate went on to create a bold new editorial position at one magazine, she accepted the top spot at another when she was seven months pregnant, and she became editor-in-chief at McCall's magazine as a working mother who intended to spend time with her kids. Today she is the editor-in-chief of Redbook, one of the hottest magazines in the country. Now Kate White tells you how she changed her style and self-image - and gives you specific, straight-from-the-shoulder advice about how to put your life in high gear and make your own career dreams come true. Based on how the real world works, her nine-step program shows you how to get ahead and get what you want. Beginning with a revealing self-test for you to determine how good, or gutsy, you are right now, White reveals the nine strategies every career woman must know, while she shares the inside stories of how other gutsy women - like Revlon's Andrea Robinson, television host Nancy Glass, renowned decorator Alexandra Stoddard, Easy Spirit shoe exec Claire Brinker, and former Reagan media advisor Merrie Spaeth - became stars in their fields.

About the Author

The best practical business advice EVERY woman should read
By A Customer
I have worked 25 years in the workforce and now make a tremendous salary. I have 50+ books in my office on management, sales, business and marketing by the leading authors of our time. This is by far, the best book of its kind (targeted to women)on the market today. I wish I had read it 25 years ago! Many women, unfortunately, feel they have to play a "game" to get ahead in business. This book gives us insight to our inner selves and helps us realize we can be true to ourselves - and still WIN in the workplace. Fabulous book!!!!

Highly valuable book, even if you're not a self-help type
By sonya34
I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book. My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers. I still am not. But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:

-Don't always need to be liked

-Don't smile too easily

-Don't apologize too quickly

-Don't clean up after other colleagues (especially men)

-Don't be a perfectionist at the expense of innovative thinking or getting things done

Simply the notion that men and women (in broad strokes, at least) behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace was a novel idea to me, coming out of a liberal arts college during the mid-1990s. Reading this book gave me an awareness that everyone needs. Obviously, no one book will apply perfectly to each of us, so you can't go looking for that. But do look to this book for many useful ways of seeing the professional world and your own role in it.

Smart girls can be both good and gutsy!
By mizrahi fan
Hated it! The piece on Julia Roberts was opportunistic and simply proved this woman may well be short on ethics and long on selling hype. Those who chose to overlook what is awful about this book are the very people the author is seeking.
Not my cup of tea! Hope my review was gutsy enough!
