Amazon Exclusive: Read Jackie Warner's Ten Tips for Getting in Shape, from Her Book This Is Why You're Fat

1. It’s not how long, it’s how strong. Incorporate 20 minutes of high intensity cardio each day. Walk fast on a treadmill for 2 minutes at a 15 incline then sprint for 2 minutes on flat ramp. Cool down for 1 minute and repeat this cycle 3 more times until you reach your 20 minute goal.

2. Women, make sure to include weight training at least 3-4 days a week. If you add 3-5 pounds of muscle to your body, you will burn 250-500 extra calories per day which equals 3-5 pounds of fat loss per week

3. Visualize the muscles you are working on–this is called the mind muscle connection and it will actually increase tone.

4. Your body hits a plateau with cardio and resistance training in one month so change your weight, reps and exercises accordingly

5. The fastest way to get the body you want is through my power circuit training. Combine 3 upper body exercises and 3 lower body exercises together to make one big set. Do not rest in between and alternate quickly from upper to lower for maximum fat burn.

6. The only muscle groups that really burn fat are the primary muscles like the chest, back, quads, glute and hamstrings. Focus hard on those!

7. You have to eat within an hour of working out to make sure you’re not eating into the muscle for energy. Make sure that you combine proteins and carbs like a blended protein shake with fruit and peanut butter or a piece of fruit with a low-fat string cheese.

8. Don’t just set a weight goal, set a physical goal too like running a 3k or training for a charity marathon. Human beings are competitive and you will spark that inner competition by trying to reach a difficult physical goal.

9. A little thing like changing your music playlist every week can go a long way. The more your mind is stimulated during your workouts, the better your results will be.

10. Instead of focusing on being fat, you’ve got to focus on being fit. If you think healthy, it eventually becomes reality to you. I always push my clients to focus on how strong they’re getting, how well they’re sleeping, and how happy they’re feeling by exercising.

Jackie Warner changed my life
By EDS
I bought this book when it first came out, so this review shares my LONG-TERM experience, which is significant. Anyone can pick a diet/exercise book, stick with it for a couple of months, get awesome results, and write a review telling you this is the answer to all your problems. But you never get to hear what happens later -- a years down the road -- did they maintain their losses? Did they gain it all back and then some? So, that's what I'm going to share with you -- me, more than two years later.

Who am I? In my former life, I was an elite athlete (swimming) who competed at the national and international levels and went to college on a scholarship. Now, I am a 37-year-old mom of two who works fulltime. When I read Jackie's book, I wasn't "fat" exactly, but I was at the very high end of the "healthy" weight range for my height: 5'4", 145. I was definitely unhappy with how I looked. As a former athlete, I was really missing my body, but never thought I could get even close to where I was before grad school, marriage, two kids, and a stressful job intervened.

So anyways, forgetting for a moment that the definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result," I decided to try yet another diet and exercise program. I read Jackie's book. At first, I could only muster the will to follow the dietary guidelines, which, by the way, are surprisingly easy and do not require you to break-up with carbs, learn how to eat weird, or immediately overhaul your pantry. I added the foods she said to, ate what else I wanted to, and started losing weight right off the bat. I did this for about a month. "Hmmmm," I thought, "if I can lose weight just by eating this way, I bet it'd come off faster if I actually tried."

So I started to follow the second phase of her diet, which is "cleaner," and I tried the workouts in the book. Now, to be honest, I am not that great at pushing myself after years of having a coach do it for me. The workouts are great, but I couldn't stick to them. I got her DVDs instead, which are great, especially the "30 day jumpstart" (which still kicks my butt) and the "Xtreme timesaver." Having her tell you what to do instead of having to figure it out for yourself definitely makes it easier to complete the workout. Armed with the book and the DVDs, I marched on.

About three months in, I had lost all the weight I wanted to (30 pounds). Awesome. And I wasn't "skinny fat," either. I was actually firm. So firm, in fact, that I could see definition in my abs -- "there you are my old friends, I thought we had said goodbye forever." Now here's the really awesome part: I have maintained it for two years and counting -- with minimal effort.

Since reaching my goal, I have continued to follow Jackie's dietary guidelines, but instead of doing the "cheat meals" thing, I apply a 90/10 rule -- 90% of the time I'm 100% good; 10% of the time, not so much (the percentages change during the holidays). When I get sloppy and start to notice a little flab creeping back, I get serious and go back to the plan 100% until I'm back to my goal (the trick here is to catch yourself before you go more than 10 pounds in the wrong direction). I firmly believe that the dietary guidelines alone have been 95% responsible for my maintenance.

I do still exercise, but nothing crazy. I aim for 30 min. of intense exercise 3 times per week. I only do more than that when I have to make up for the holidays or something, and there have been months when I do nothing at all. I rely mostly on Jackie's videos but add in other random ones I pick-up here and there when I get bored. I've also gone on a couple of gym kicks but only run high-intensity intervals on the treadmill so as to avoid the gym rats who shamelessly stare as they grunt through another set of bicep curls. The point I'm trying to make here is that I haven't exactly been killing myself in the gym or setting aside chunks of time every day to workout, yet I have managed to maintain my new body.

Bottom line: You can do this. The book's subtitle, "And How to Get Thin Forever," is true. Reaching my goal required some initial effort (but nowhere near as much as other programs I've tried), but maintaining your new body is not only possible, it's easy. And the longer you stick with it, the easier it becomes.

Celebrity trainer says you can get fit in less time without a miserable diet.
By Susanna Hutcheson
Warner spent five days a week, two hours a day writing the book, according to a recent article in The Advocate. She's trying to come back from the loss of her Bravo show, Workout. The loss of her show followed some insensitive remarks about a woman's breasts. The woman's husband called Warner out when he overheard the on-camera quips about the shape of his wife's breasts. She had undergone reconstructive work after a battle with breast cancer. After considerable pressure, Warner's sponsors pulled off the show. Many fans dropped her and her status as a role model was losing steam.

Another show she planned was cut down before it aired. So, this book is one step in her comeback and attempt at redemption. And certainly it will sell well because people rush to buy this type of book --- and she still has a following --- though not as much of one as she once did.

About the book she says, "It's different and better than anything else out there," She says the Atkins diet is a program that can't be maintained because "deprivation doesn't work." I think we can all agree with that.

She says in her book, "We are a nation of sick, unhealthy people wasting away and mutating into sad, fat, and lethargic people, just getting fatter and sadder by the second. We are an out-of-control nation with out-of-control waistlines. I have noticed that a mass panic is setting in. I see it every day in the faces of people and desperate e-mails from around the country. So many people are tired, always dragging and feeling exhausted. Many are a walking medicine chest, dependent of pills to control everything from high blood pressure to sleep deprivation, and are chronically fatigued and depressed. Others can't climb a flight
of stairs or walk a block without gasping for air. Millions of people are alive, but hardly living."

I find what she said so sad yet so true. I'm old enough to be Jackie's mother. I can tell you that I have more strength and energy now than I did twenty years ago. And it's due to changing my lifestyle in a manner similar to what she recommends. I only wish I would have learned about it sooner.

I was never obese but often overweight. I don't care so much about looking sexy anymore. But I do care about feeling strong and well and having my blood pressure and other numbers where they should be. There comes a time when we care less about the shape of our butts and more about the shape of our health. So some of you are still motivated by looking good. Others by feeling good. And hopefully many of you about both.

My point is, Warner speaks to the root of the problem and to the soul of the reader. She gets right down to the hurt. That sets her apart from others who write this sort of book.

She says she's passionate about "showing people how powerful they really are." That talks to me. I'm all for empowering myself and others and I know from personal experience how great it feels to hit 65 and be able to do ten times what you did at forty five, to be stronger and smarter and wiser. And that's a mixture of physical strength along with self-confidence. This is what Warner teaches. And for that reason, I consider her the top of the lot.

She starts out by telling you why you're fat. That's important. Why? Only when you know why you're fat are you able to go in reverse and start over --- doing the right things that will make you slim and keep you slim. You have to know why you got fat in order to correct it.

Hormones are the cause of fat, according to Warner. "Out of whack hormones disturb your body chemistry and cause weight gain," she says. She adds, "When you control your hormones, you can control fat!"

She goes on to say that there are hormones that can make you thin. Here she talks about human growth hormone (HGH). Of course, it's illegal to take the pill HGH. But she discusses ways to get your body to create it naturally --- pretty exciting stuff because HGH is truly the fountain of youth.

She also tells you how to eat to create more testosterone. And yes, that's a very powerful and important hormone for women as well as men.

She says, "The best testosterone diet is a healthy moderate-fat/high-protein/moderate-carb diet --- which is how my nutrition program works." She goes on to say that type of diet creates a hormonal environment that the body uses to burn fat and put on lean muscle.

In discussing exercise, Warner tells the reader to see herself/himself as "an athlete." She says, "When I tell my clients that I see the athlete in them, they actually work harder and complete those last five reps. Your behavior is consistent with your identity."

She hit the nail on the head there. You become pretty much what you think about all the time and who you think you are. She says, "When you look in the mirror, do you see a lazy, fat, out-of-shape person? If so, your behavior will follow to match that identity --- you will in effect act like and be a lazy, fat, out-of-shape person." She goes on to say that if you see your inner athlete, motivated to change, you become that person.

Warner says crunches are worthless. By looking at her famous six pack, I'd say she certainly does her share, however. Those don't come naturally or easily to anyone.

But what she says is true --- they can cause injury after several years of doing them --- if not less. She says it's all about cardio (which, much like myself, she hates.) She stresses doing "power circuit" training to the point of exhaustion. Again, I think she goes a bit off on this. A person can do far too much of anything. Exercising until you throw up or whatever doesn't appeal to me one whit! If you like that sort of thing, more power to you.

Warner allows sugar in her eating plan but not much. She believes that sugar and not fat is the culprit. I certainly agree with this as science backs it. The book also offers lots of food choices--including pita bread, pork roast, and yams. Her plans call for three meals and two snacks per day. Two "treat meals" weekly are allowed. You can have any junk food you want as long as it has no more than 1500 calories.

I don't agree with the idea of cheat meals or cheat days. A study in the International Journal of Obesity showed that people who ate a consistent number of calories all week long were 50% more likely to maintain their weight than those who stuck to a stricter plan Monday through Friday.

In other words, if you're strict five days a week and then go on a two day binge or cheating spell, you're likely to put on pounds. Moreover, doctors warn against cheat meals. Even one meal that's not healthy can have ill effects on your heart. This is above and beyond what it can do to your weight.

About the title of the book she says, "I fought very hard for that title. "It's inflammatory, but I am tired of turning on the TV and reading diets that are not going to help."

The foods she recommends are easily available and affordable. She suggests you don't weigh or measure. If a piece of meat will fit into your palm "that's cool." Gotta go along with that.

I found the book interesting and some of it useful. I certainly don't agree with it all. I think Warner tends to go to extremes at times and I think she's wrong at times.

I did find Warner's book unique and head and shoulders above most of the so-called diet books or fitness books available. One need not agree with everything to get good from it. Her talk on metaphysics was very interesting and inspiring.

You'll find lots of exercises, complete with small photos of Warner doing them to show you how. You'll also find many really great-looking recipes that should be easy and fast to make as well as healthy. She does suggest, and rightly so, that you use organic food, including eggs. In fact, she suggests two eggs per day.

I found both the exercise and the food preparation sections very good. I also enjoyed the motivational sections. All in all, a very complete book for the person wanting to get in shape.

While Warner does not come across as a caring, compassionate person, her writing makes her sound like one. And people who are miserable because of their weight and the shape they're in need that type of talk. Her book speaks to a need deep inside all of us.

I think anything that will get you motivated and moving is a good thing. This book could very well be just that catalyst for many people. If so, it's well worth buying and considering.

Recommended.

The Rosary: A Journey to the Beloved, by Gary Jansen

THE ROSARY is a beautifully illustrated practical and reverential primer to a centuries old prayer that has touched millions of lives. In the introduction, author Gary Jansen appeals to the universality of one of the original Christian prayers, "Though traditionally considered a Catholic act of devotion, the rosary with its primary focus on the life, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus, is ultimately a . . . universal prayer--one that can appeal to Christians of all denominations."

Written for both Catholic and Protestant Christians, candid explanations on why and how to pray the rosary along with useful instructions on how to get the most out of the meditative and spiritual exercise of repeating prayers are in the first of two sections. Prayers including a visual and spiritual journey that illuminates the teachings of the New Testament follow in the second section.

An Inspiration
By Penny Lane
I bought a copy of The Rosary when it came up by chance as an "Amazon Recommendation" for me. I completely believe in fate and signs and thought this to be one. Although I have tried in the past, I wouldn't normally read a book about a prayer but this one is different. It is more than a book. It's a kind voice speaking to you, whispering in the background even while it's put away neatly on your bookshelf. It made me look at the Rosary in a completely different way than I did in all my years of Catholic school. I would recommend it not only for someone who is interested in prayer but also for those of you who have trouble with meditation. I have tried "walking down the path into the forest and closing the gate" and so on and so on as many meditation guides recommend but the nagging stress of my day to day life always distracts me back to the present. Here, Gary Jansen teaches a deeply meaningful type of meditation. I now keep The Rosary on a shelf above my bed and have reached for it during some hardships that have occurred in my life in the past months. It is truly an inspiration.

a beautifully written book
By bookreaderfan
Gary Jansen shows us the importance of slowing down and, using the repeating prayers of the rosary, inducing a meditative state. He argues that by repeating the rosary you force onself to slow down. He uses some personal anecdotes to illustrate this. This book is a unique perspective and belongs in ones personal library of anyone trying to find peace thru the power of prayer. I loved this book!

Lovely little book
By Monique Woods
I bought this book because I had just finished reading Gary Jansen's other book "Holy Ghosts: Or How a (Not-so) Good Catholic Boy Became a Believer in Things That Go Bump in the Night". We had a similar experience to his except ours was way more terrifying and intense - worse than any movie. Not being religious at all, my daughter (who had not been Baptized because that stuff was "mumbo-jumbo tradition that was simply ritualistic and meaningless in today's world) stood in our dining room one day and declared, "I think we need a priest." And so began our completely baffling, surprising and uncharacteristic-of-us journey into Catholicism and Deliverance.

Gary Jansen has the wonderful ability to write as if he were your good friend or brother. He is learned enough to be credible and "average Joe" enough to be believable and relatable.

Gary's asides and written thoughts are sometimes very funny. He is my new favorite author.

I was told getting rid of non-Christian items in my house along with praying the rosary would have a significant impact on getting rid of the evil attacking us, so I zoomed to the store and bought books and directions on how to do the Rosary. I worried it would be BORING and tedious -
until the day I was clutching my beads praying with the directions on my lap and an audible hiss, growl then a scream happened across the room. A 'wind' whooshed the sounds away.
Man oh man! Guess who prays the rosary daily now??? Gary's book is a delight and you just FEEL better and closer to Heaven reading it.
I recommend both of his books highly and I hope he publishes more soon!

America's Heartland, 1946. World War II has ended, and everyone is pursuing peacetime's bright promise with fresh energy and hope. Newly-arrived in a small Wisconsin town, Christina Tucker now dares to chase her long-cherished dreams: put her wartime nursing skills to use and reconnect with country life. But helping a shell-shocked veteran recover soon tests her determination and disturbs town memories best left buried. She has no choice but to turn to her patient's seemingly-irresponsible brother, Tyler Sutter. A restless ex-soldier, Tyler can't believe this pretty ladylike nurse can heal his family. Yet as Christina begins to understand Tyler's own fears, the two grow close, then closer still-as a terrible secret sparks one man's violent, vengeful spree. With both the guilty and innocent alike in harm's way, Tyler and Christina must face all their fears . . . or never live to see the future.

From Booklist
Garlock stays with her tried-and-true setting of small Midwestern towns in the early twentieth century as she tells the story of a third member of the Tucker family from Stay a Little Longer (2010) and Keep a Little Secret (2011). Christina Tucker, an army nurse during WWII, takes up a job in Longstock, Wisconsin, assisting Dr. Barlow, who is still fighting his demons from WWI. His nephews are WWII veterans: ill-mannered mechanic Tyler Sutter and his shell-shocked brother Holden, who will not leave his room. As Christina becomes part of the community, she discovers that Tyler is not what he appears to be and that she can help secretive Holden. But she is in danger from a dangerous psychopath who is fixated on Tyler, and a deranged drunk who blames Dr. Barlow for his brother’s death. All the hallmarks of a Garlock historical romance are here, including a feisty heroine, a tortured hero, nicely drawn details of the era, and evil antagonists. --Diana Tixier Herald

Disappointed
By Matoaca Girl
I have been a Garlock fan for years and look forward to each new release; this is one of the few that was not worth the wait. Granted, no one writes "crazy" like Garlock but this time every other person in town is unstable. Two alcholholics, a drug addict, an agoraphobic with PTSS and another with sibling resentment that as an obsessive stalker. And all of them cross Christina Tucker's path. Most of them within 2 days of her arrival in town.

Christina, the heroine is unlikable and puts herself in unbelievable situations. Tyler, the hero is also unlikable. No one likes a whiner, and poor Tyler whines about his childhood, his mother, his brother and the actions of the woman he is supposed to love.

Usually Dorothy's characters are well drawn out as the layers of the story unfold. In this book only the "crazies" stories are developed but I never got a sense of knowing the main characters. And what I did see I couldn't like.

There were too many subplots that all resulted in Christina being the victim. I kept expecting the storyline to come back around to the Post Traumatic Shock syndrome that she is helping TWO related characters deal with. Wouldn't it have been logical that after two attacks on herself that there should have been some mention of her at least having a personal understanding of the condition?

Nope, this time my favorite writer let me down. This is the first one of her books that I had to make myself finish.

Not my type of book at all.
By Joanne Long
This was my first experience with Garlock and although I did find some enjoyment through this novel, it fell short for me somewhere along the way. We follow Christina as she starts a new life in a small Wisconsin town.

Since Christina grew up in a rural Minnesota town, life in Longstock, Wisconsin is not too much of a shock to her. She sees many similarities that range from the area business, the townspeople, and even the people that have been affected by the war. The last thing that Christina expects is to fall in love while she is helping a war veteran conquer his fears.

Holden Tucker is the man that served in the war who Christina helps to face his demons. When Christina is not spending time with Holden she usually can be found with his brother Tyler. While she develops a protective affection towards Holden, a deeper emotion is sparked with Tyler. This, of course, will create an unsavory love triangle.

Many events are brought to Christina's attention within this novel. An obsessed woman sets Christina as a target, while a town drunk is finally ready to fulfill his act of revenge. One of the most endearing storylines involved the doctor that had a morphine addiction. Christina helped him deal with his addiction as she helped Holden confront his fears.

This book caught my eye because I liked the cover and noticed it was a post WWII novel. I enjoy books from this time period, but this one didn't hit home for me. I did enjoy most of the story, but I have to warn you that there is a sex scene towards the end that made me feel that I was listening to an erotic novel. I did not enjoy that part at all. While I didn't find much enjoyment from this book, I do think that those of you that enjoy romance novels would want to give this one a try.

Come A Little Closer
By Brenda C
I have been reading Dorothy Garlock books for years, and I can always count on them to not only transport me to whatever setting she is writing about be she also allows me to connect with the characters she is portraying. In "Come A Little Closer" we get the character of Christina Tucker and the year is 1946. WW11 has just come to an end and instead of heading back to her hometown of Carlson MN she decides to accept a nursing position in the small town of Longstock, Wisconsin where she will be working with Dr. Barlow the town doctor. When she arrives she is invited to supper with the doctor's sister and her two sons Holden and Tyler. Holden is dealing with issues from the war and has locked himself in his room, not even taking meals with his family. When Christina volunteers to take his supper to him, they connect and becomes determined to help him. Meanwhile Tyler comes off as a bad boy but he has his own issues as well, and while Christina tries to help Holden she can't help but be drawn to Tyler, but someone in town is determined to do whatever it takes to keep her from Tyler.

The historical aspect of this story is what drew me in, but the characters and plot really kept me reading. While there is a romance, the author gives the reader so much more. Holden was suffering from PTSD, something that many soldiers deal with. It was nice to see him slowly learn how to handle his problems and realize that he could have a future. I enjoyed how the romance between Christina and Tyler progressed. I thought the secondary story of Luther and the blame he placed on the doctor for his brother Donnie's death added to the story. There were several secondary characters to round out this story and one of my favorites had to be the feisty Eunice Hester, and the impact she had on the doctor.
If your a fan of Dorothy Garlock your going to love this story, and if your not then what are you waiting for, pick up a copy of "Come A Little Closer" and see why she is one of today's best selling authors!

The Black Al Capone!!
By StylishCurvyGirl
Dutch was born Bernard James. Dark, sexy,cold-hearted and gangsta, Dutch was nothing to be f***** with. He was always smart; that's why he deemed school unnecessaary. Dutch had a plan-He wanted to be the King of New York. He started his plan by sweeping floors for an Italian man who had connections to the mob. One day a stick-up kid tried to rob the man and Dutch killed him. This was his first body but definitely not the last. This proved to his employer that he was loyal and they gave him a connect to a chop shop. So, at the age of 14, Dutch had money rolling in like a grown man and a team of stickup kids who only stole BMWS and other luxury cars.

But an error of judgement came one day when the biggest car theft they could have attempted went wrong and Dutch had to go to jail. Little did the police know, they did Dutch a favor. After doing his two year bid, Dutch was smarter, bigger, and badder than ever. Hsi mom told him never to let him lock him up like dog ever again without putting up a fight. From that day forward, Dutch vowed to hold court in the streets before he went to jail again.

He resumed his plan on being the King of New York. Ojiwa Kazami ,a nigerian, was the King now. His team, used to the guerilla warfare in Africa, had no problems taking the urban jungles over. He was untouchable. The mob even put two hits out on him and was unsucessful at killing him. This hyped up his legendary status even more. That it, until Dutch came along. See every man had a weakness and Kazami's baby's mother happened to be his. She was the key element in the setup to kill Kazami.

After killing Kazami, Dutch wore his chain( a plate-sized gold dragon with diamonds and rubies for eyes)as a staus symbol meaning, "I'm that n**** now! F*** wit me! Kazami's team and every one loyal to his regime went down in one of the biggest killing sprees New York had ever seen. It was called, "Month of Murder" in the papers.

This book reads like a mobster gangsta movie!! It will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. This book opens up with Dutch's trial. In the end, Dutch holds the streets in court after they try to stick him with a life sentence. Whew!!!

Hustlin'
By A Customer
Book Review

Dutch by Teri Wood; Teri Woods Publishing:New York, NY, 2003 ISBN# 0-96722494-2

Have you ever thought about hustling? Dutch by Teri Woods is fictional book. This is the first book of a trilogy. All three of his books are about hustlers. The theme of Dutch is that although you're making all that money something will happen: it can be getting caught by the cops or getting shot.
All Dutch wanted was money, power and respect. Dutch started out just stealing cars. He had a connection from Fat Tony with a chop shop. He went to jail for about three years. When he got back everything was different. Kazami and his crew had taken over the heroin trade and Dutch wanted to be the one running the heroine trade. He showed everyone that he doesn't play when he murdered Kazami. He did everything he murdered, stole cars, and hustled he even had some night spots where rappers and ballers came through.
The book is gripping. The chapter where he invaded Kazami will have you guessing what he will do next. You will be wondering whether or not he will kill the baby along with the girl and everyone else in the house. I like the way the author wrote the book from at least 5 different points of views. For example, when the cop came in and testified and the guy who blew himself up's wife came. Even one of his friends testified against him which I thought was messed up. The interesting part is that the book all takes place in court and the things that happen are when the people take the stand.
Dutch reminds me of Quadir because they both hustled and got rich. Also, they both could've had any girl they wanted but they really only wanted one. Also a lot of people owed them money and when they didn't deliver they would make them pay either with money or with their life. He and Tony Montana got rich off of the heroin trade.
I recommend this book to everyone who likes books about hustlers and murderers. This book is targeted to the younger people because its purpose is to show what it's like to hustle.

True Crimes
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
DUTCH: THE FIRST OF A TRILOGY is a bone-chilling tale of murder, power and retribution, which vividly highlights the crime riddled existence of notorious Newark gangster, Bernard James, AKA Dutch.

Dutch's life of crime begins at about the age of 14, when he cunningly capitalizes on a botched robbery attempt against a business owner with close ties to the mob. Dutch cold-heartedly tricks and kills the would be perpetrator, to the shocked relief of the mobster and then calmly disposes of the body. Appreciative, he soon introduces Dutch to "Fat Tony", a reputed mob boss, who is so impressed by Dutch's heinous act that he takes him under his protection and rewards him with a coveted connection to a "chop shop," which only dealt in luxury cars. Thus began Dutch's criminal legacy, which grows to gigantic proportions and culminates in his being put on trial for a murderous rampage labeled "the month of murder." The District Attorney appears to have an airtight case, which does not bode well for Dutch. But an ever resourceful Dutch has no plans to live his life in prison and quickly orchestrates a plan to avenge those who would dare to attempt to usurp his meteoric rise to the top.

DUTCH: THE FIRST OF A TRILOGY is a fast moving story with ruthless dialogue and a plot that goes into detail after gory detail of Dutch's bizarre life of crime. This thoroughly absorbing and harrowing tale reads like a work of fiction and is one that will keep any lover of this genre captivated. The story ends with an unexpected spine-tingling twist that is almost unparalleled in its shock-value.

Believing in and Creating Christmas Miracles
By Lisa M. Hendey
During our annual Christmas break from school, the boys and I typically take a lazy afternoon in pajamas and share a special Christmas book. As they've grown older, we've evolved from picture books to lovely inspirational novels. Our selection for this year will be Hannah's Hope by the inspiringly prolific Karen Kingsbury.

Hannah's Hope (Warner Faith, October 2005, hardcover, 176 pages) is the fourth installment in Kingsbury's popular "Red Gloves Series". The series combines compelling stories of love, faith and belief with real world opportunities for service to others.

Hannah's Hope is both an encouragement and a page-turner. From multiple perspectives, the book tells the story of a trio of family members separated and isolated both emotionally and physically. Teenage Hannah appears at first glance to "have it all". She is a busy, intelligent, wealthy girl attending the best school and keeping up with an active extracurricular life. As we come to know Hannah's heart, however, we recognize her acute loneliness, brought on by the fact that her parents live halfway across the world due to their careers.

Hannah's mother, Carol, hasn't let being a mom slow down her drive and ambition. She's made the tough choices, even though this has meant leaving her daughter to be raised by an unfeeling grandmother. Carol daydreams about her eventual run for political office and hiring her daughter as an intern - perhaps then they can have a close relationship. Upon informing Hannah of an impending separation during Christmas, Carol reveals a major surprise that will change the course of Hannah's life.

Carol's secret introduces us to a third character in the book, Mike, and to his life as an officer and helicopter pilot in Iraq. Separated from the only family he knows, Mike longs to be reunited with someone special, and finds a true faith in God and the power of prayer along the way.

Hannah's Hope offers an exciting plot line and a few twists that will keep readers glued to the story. But the true value of this lovely book is in its message of faith, family and belief. If we believe that God ultimately loves and provides for us, we can turn to Him in faith regardless of how insurmountable life's problems and difficulties may seem. He hears us, and in His own way responds to our prayers. Our Christmas miracles may not be as dramatic as Hannah's, but His love for us makes great things possible for each and every one of us.

I am looking forward to sharing Hannah's Hope with my family this season. The "Red Gloves Projects" listed at the end of the book offer wonderful ideas for reaching out to and supporting the men and women of our military, who may be serving far away from loved ones this holiday season. Along with praying for our own Christmas miracles, perhaps our family will have the opportunity to create a few miracles for others in need or lonely this Christmas. It is thanks to our belief in the greatest holiday miracle, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, that we celebrate this season. In Jesus' name and with his example, sharing love and belief with others should be at the top of our Christmas list this year.

From Publishers Weekly
Cannily combining some of the emotional appeal of Bridges of Madison County with a riveting cat-and-mouse game between a retired CIA man and a psychotic rural police chief, DeMille's latest novel (after The General's Daughter) has bestseller written all over it. Keith Landry, his Cold War intelligence job a victim of the Soviet collapse, returns to the little Ohio town where he grew up and begins to tinker with thoughts of reviving the family farm. A former sweetheart, Annie, despondent after Keith went off to Vietnam, had married aggressive, good-looking Cliff Baxter on the rebound, but Keith and Annie had never ceased to correspond. Now that he's back, the old interest is rekindled in both, but Baxter, now police chief and a womanizing petty tyrant, is fiercely jealous-and the novel takes off as a deadly struggle between a man trained in the arts of deception and one with all the built-in advantages of police power in a remote spot. In the process, DeMille works in some poignant reflections on the diminishing role of the American heartland and some acute satire at the expense of the Washington power elite; he also manages a nice combination of wryness and passion in his middle-aged lovers. The pacing is expert: there is plenty of time for leisurely scenes, but the narrative tension never flags, and the final third keeps up a crackling drive. There are a few pat and unconvincing moments, and the inclination of DeMille's characters to think aloud is an odd quirk, but no readers, once hooked, are going to complain-or do much else-until they have finished the book. 400,000 first printing; BOMC main selection; major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
DeMille's thrillers (e.g., The Charm School, LJ 5/15/88) are a cut above most, and his many fans won't be disappointed with Spencerville. Keith Landry, a Cold War spy cashiered after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, returns to his rural Ohio birthplace hoping to rekindle an old flame. Alas, she's married to Spencerville's chief of police, an abusive, microcephalic goon who tries to run Landry out of town. DeMille is at his best when things are happening, but his thoughts on rural life and farming are a bit saccharine. Nonetheless, riveting suspense and likable characters make this a likely candidate for popular collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
A usually reliable and best-selling author (The General's Daughter, 1992, etc.) comes a-cropper with this tale of star-crossed lovers who finally meet again after a quarter century and then must deal with her psychotic husband, the sheriff and de facto dictator of their Ohio hometown. Such a story requires that the individuals involved seem likely to have held onto their youthful romance into middle age. When one, Keith Landry, is an exintelligence operative with the National Security Council, a man competent and experienced enough to have the president of the United States request his return to government service in the White House, such emotional gridlock seems pretty far-fetched. And when the other, Annie Prentis Baxter, has married the town psychopath and remained an apparently willing victim of her own stupid choice for more than 20 years, one must wonder what exactly it is about this woman that has kept Landry captivated. Readers are left to hope that DeMille's reputation for accomplished storytelling and the ability to create memorable characters will save the day. No such luck. This is pure (and unbelievable) melodrama with a stock cast: farmers who are almost actively unsophisticated (Landry's elderly aunt is absolutely baffled by a bottle of red wine), a kindly and understanding old preacher, the town drunk who is a Vietnam veteran and one of the sheriff's prime victims, and so forth. (There is a disdain for Middle America that ranges from implicit to overt throughout these pages.) Even those who fall outside the Spencerville paradigm , Landry's former high school pal and his wife, are clich‚s of another sort: unreconstructed '60s peaceniks: They turn out to have no real role to play in the story. Only Landry's ex-boss from Washington is even vaguely interesting (and his role is essentially that of deus ex machina). Some tension in the final pages, but too little, too late. Very disappointing. Demille Does It Again
By smile be happy
I don't have much more I can say about Nelson Demille. "Spencerville" is yet another interesting story written by the master. It's intriguing, suspenseful, surprising journey with some twists and turns. Also there was good development of the characters. And of course it was so hard to put it down. This is another highly recommended creation of Demille. Thanks.

Not quite Spot-On
By terry
I enjoy DeMilles' books tremendously but this one, written a long time ago, didn't quite define the main character who was a retired spy with basically no physical skills to counter physical attacks on him. That part just didn't add up. Hence the 3 stars - otherwise as usual, the plot and dialogue were excellent.

ADDICTIVE
By Darlene Graves
This book is addictive. I couldn't put it down and my nights were short while I was reading it The only thing that stopped me at night was my eyes no longer able to focus well. His books never fail to entertain. Am running out of books of his to read.

Elmore's Mercy, Mercy Me is a slick soap opera about Dwayne Grandison, an Angeleno and Christian counselor whose pop approach gets him onto the network of TV evangelist Beverlyn Boudreaux. He starts to become famous but still grieves for his dead wife, so Beverlyn's other-than-spiritual attractions are not quite satisfying. He finds himself drawn to Nina Jordan, another counselor who is as beautiful as Beverlyn but not so glitzy. Then Dwayne is accused of being gay, which in his business is not an asset. John Mort

Well done
By Huntress Reviews
Esmerelda is a spunky lady in a small North Carolina town. She's not nosy, but she is willing to advise anyone and everyone who comes along. Most of her advice is directed through phone and letter to her dear friend Beatrice who is having late in life romantic problems.
Her skills are put into the test when the AIDS crisis impacts this unlikely town. Her mercy and wisdom will be severely challenged as she is called upon to extend the hand of Christian love in what would be called above and beyond duty. She proves that love is love by what it produces, especially extended to strangers.
***** Esmerelda is an unlikely, folksy heroine that will remind you of Aunt Bea. She is a lady from another time in the modern world who exemplifies Christianity. *****

BE WARNED....
By Grace Underfire
There is an error of placement with several reviews written here. Those reviews were NOT written about the book listed, i.e. "Mercy Me" by Margaret A. Graham. Those reviews refer to a book by author Ronn Elmore entitled: "Mercy, Mercy Me". While the review of Dr. Elmore's book might be helpful to some readers, it should not be considered a valid review of Margaret Graham's book "Mercy Me", which is a fun, lighthearted Christian book, not serious literature, but an entertaining book with good values. Four Stars **** to Ms. Graham. Looking forward to reading more about Esmeralda.

An Enchanting, Fun Read
By FaithfulReader.com
In this delightful romp through the daily life of a small-town Southern woman, Margaret A. Graham gets a chance to have some fun with her characters while poking a bit of fun at the church --- something I happen to adore. Esmeralda is an immediately likable character, an older woman who does not abide nonsense and takes utter pleasure in dispensing her always practical advice to others, even those "others" she knows will never heed her counsel. Mainly, of course, church folk.

But, as Graham wisely knows, it's those very same church folk who will be the ones to rally to support people in need and distress, as the church's Willing Workers do throughout --- helping those who grieve, those who are saddled with overwhelming responsibilities, those who need a warm casserole as much as a warm hug. Esmeralda finds herself on the receiving end of their generous gifts of time and food when she assumes responsibility for a woman dying of AIDS.

Throughout the book, Esmeralda writes letters to her lifelong friend Beatrice, a literary device Graham uses skillfully. Through the letters back and forth, we gain greater insight into what makes Esmeralda tick, and through her friend we eventually see a flawed aspect of her nature.

Anyone who has lived in the South, the real South, is bound to be amused by Graham's ear for the "language" --- the way real Southerners express their thoughts, their choice of words, and their charming way of simply making up words. Thus Esmeralda advises Beatrice that the "onliest doctor" she needs is Dr. Scholl, seeks out a "notary republic", and quotes Charles "Splurgeon" throughout. The book also has some hilarious moments, as when Esmeralda must make up a name for the dying Hispanic woman and can only think of "Carmen Miranda" (which admittedly may not be funny to those too young to remember her), or when she tries to resolve an immigration problem, gets shuffled from one office to another in the courthouse, and finally takes it upon herself to enter a door marked Problem Resolution Office, only to discover 45 minutes later that it's an IRS office.

And Graham's use of imagery shines throughout the book: "Her pauses are like when the washing machine stops then starts up again," Esmeralda says about Beatrice. Graham has most assuredly done her share of laundry, because only someone who has listened out for the end of the cycle countless times can relate to the way those pauses sound like a person holding her breath. "If Clara can't climb down your family tree to the bare roots, you don't get no clean bill of health," she says of another church member.

But there are some missteps. Esmeralda uncharacteristically comments on the number of Christians killed and tortured around the world, something that doesn't sound like her but instead sounds like the author trying to educate her audience. Then there's the mandatory salvation scene, in which one character practically grills another to find out if she led a woman to the Lord in precisely the "right" way. That one really grated on me.

Finally, toward the end of the book, Esmeralda convinces a godly man named Carl that he should cut what she calls his "pigtail" (a ponytail, maybe?) because no woman would want a man with hair like that, and, as she tells him, "it don't look right for a Christian man to go around looking like a leftover hippie." Here's a kind, godly man, but he isn't quite up to snuff as a Christian example because he wears his hair wrong? I hope not. And I suspect there are plenty of women out there, even Esmeralda's age, who would gladly accept a ponytail on a thoughtful, caring man.

Despite those and other minor flaws, what it all comes down to is this: MERCY ME is an enchanting, fun read, and Graham is an author to watch. Let's hope she has more in mind for Esmeralda.

Mere exercise is passe; one now follows a total diet/exercise/attitude program. Here, two fitness mavens offer their respective plans. Smith, known for her WalkFit program, aims to establish "optimal" eating habits by outlining a food plan for three different body types, although she is rather vague on the distinctions. Menus and recipes emphasize a proper balance among carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The accompanying exercise regimen consists of aerobics, weight training, and stretching. Walsh is a top New York City aerobics instructor and personal trainer whose DIVA (Determination, Integrity, Vitality, and Aspiration) plan aims at building self-esteem along with strength. Walsh concentrates primarily on exercise, also covering aerobics, weights, and stretches, with sets of activities linked to ascending "progressions." No specific menus or recipes are provided; instead, attitudes about food are explored as individual awareness develops. Either of these books would be suitable for libraries needing to update their fitness collections.?Susan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. P.L., New Philadelphia, Ohio

From Booklist
In a well-organized diet and exercise guide, fitness guru Smith encourages readers to "create your own miracle" by adopting sensible eating habits and a consistent exercise program. Smith presents nutrition guidelines before offering three eating plans that address different needs (e.g., for foods higher in carbohydrates or for more low-fat meals), and she includes recipes for many of the suggested dishes. She concludes with illustrated directions for strength and flexibility exercises and with further exercise advice. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

Kathy Smith is my role model!
By A Customer
Earlier this year, I started working out with a couple of Kathy Smith's home videos and liked the physical results I was getting so much I wanted to see what she had to say on paper about diet and exercise. Well, this book really helps you understand what goes on in your body when you exercise and that you HAVE TO EAT in order to lose weight and maintain muscle. Kathy helps you understand the roles protein, carbohydrates, fat and exercise play in helping your body function to its maximum potential. Everything Kathy says makes so much sense, you keep asking yourself "How come I didn't know this already?" I would exercise with her videos but not always eat so great and Kathy's book has helped me really focus on what I'm eating to work in conjunction with exercising. After just a few weeks I'm looking and FEELING better than I have for a long time. Besides learning more about diet and excercise, reading Kathy's story of how she overcame tragedy and adversity early in life is inspiring and motivating. Kathy's explanations of how she balances career, family life (husband and two daughters!) yet still finds time to eat right and exercise every day makes you realize you have no more excuses!! Between her work out videos and this book, I know I've found the right regimen to keep me motivated.

Sifting through diet gimmicks and presenting the facts!
By Margaret
Kathy Smith is certianly one of my favorites when it comes to handing out common sense advice on an often perplexing subject. I have read two of her books and I am not disappointed by this one in the least. She is clear and concise on how different foods work to fuel the body. It is discussed in detail why certain people may not have success on a particular diet. You must find the one that your body responds to the best. I enjoy her positive approach on getting healthy and staying
in shape. While some may call it syrupy sweet at times, I think that they're just jealous. When she wrote this book she was 45, she looks great and she works at it! She mentions frequently that she has down falls like the rest of us. It humanizes her and makes her much easier to relate to. Great job on this one, keep up the good work Kathy!

It is an autobiography of sorts, you really get to know Kathy in this book, and it is woven into the life commitment she is pushing for in this book, "Getting better all the time". So many diets these days are focused on a quick-fix sollution, such as my personal favorite, "loose 10lbs. in 48 hours with the Hollywood diet". In this book Kathy drives home the fact that successful dieting and fitness aren't about quick-fixes, but choices and life changes which require learning how to change in a healthy way. She is careful to recognize that we all have different dietary needs (carbohydrates, protiens, and fats), and she is diplomatic in sugguesting which diet is right for you (you know you better than Kathy knows you). I found it to be a very fun read, I must admit that I didn't take away as much as I did in "Lift weights to loose weight", but this is a more familiar subject to me. I found it reasuring to find my philosophies supported here, when usually my friends think that I have an eating disorder because I pay SO much attention to learning about what goes into my body, while they are popping diet pills, or experiencing ketosis. I like that Kathy bluntly tackled two topics that most avoid, first that everyone has an excuse for not living healthy (What's Yours?) and second, she identifies that there are different levels of eating ranging from out of control to eating by the rules, to optimal eating. I think everyone can put themself somewhere in these five levels and use it as a tool to impove their diets. The best part of the whole book though is the recipes. I have tried many of these recipes and a few have made it onto my regular menu at home. I am happy to say that even my husband, Mr. Pizza and Burgers, likes them enough to desire them again, even after I told him it was good for him. I keep the book handy, especially for the recipes. It is a good way to learn to cook more healthy without sacrificing satisfaction and flavor.
