But when life finally starts looking up for Camille, Chu is brutally murdered. Again feeling abandoned and helpless, and refusing to return to the system, Camille finds herself living with a stable of women in a tiny run-down apartment building in Washington, D.C., working for Nut, a deranged pimp. From Publishers Weekly
Dupree's debut offers readers an unvarnished look at the troubled, violence-filled lives of inner-city youth in Washington, D.C., frequently through the eyes and experiences of Camille Logan. Ten-year-old Camille is placed with the Brinkleys, yet another foster family, where she suffers extreme mental and sexual abuse for years, until she's rescued by Chu, a low-level drug dealer who actually loves and looks after her. But when Chu is murdered in a drug deal gone wrong, Camille makes a desperate choice to join a cruel pimp's stable, where she faces her situation and struggles to change her life. DuPree displays an excellent ear for the dialogue, thinking, music and worldviews of her young characters and a talent for setting: the grimy streets, rundown hotels, beatup houses, sweaty house parties and clubs feel real and far above standard street lit. But the ending falls short, as though the author has a sequel in mind. (Jan.)

dark, gritty and profound
By A Customer
In Washington, D.C. ten years old Camille Logan is placed with her latest foster family as part of a swinging door system that ignores the welfare of the child once placed because the social services' workload is overwhelming. Over the next few years, she is abused and sexually molested. The system never bothers to take a look at Camille or her care providers as she is out of sight and therefore out of mind.

Drug dealer Chu is disgusted with what he sees happening to Camille and takes her into his home. He takes care of her until he is murdered in a drug deal. Camille desperately decides to become a hooker working for a nasty abusive pimp, which makes her wonder if she has other options to get off the mean streets of DC.

Damaged is a dark, gritty and profound look at life in DC when a poor youth is caught up in the foster care system and consequently the streets. The cycle seems inevitable though Camille hopes to break out. Although the climax fails to live up to a moving character driven story line that captures the essence of surviving in America's urban jungle, fans will appreciate Kia DuPree's powerful inner city hustle; the perfect capitalism system as anyone is for sale on the open market with no tax or surcharge; just supply and demand.

Couldn't Put It Down!!!
By DB_DIVA
Not only was this an enjoyable read but a definite page turner! The character developments were wonderful and the author gives enough information on the characters to feel emotions for/with them. Without giving away any of its plots -- Damaged isn't just about prostitution, drugs, guns, materialistic things and getting paid. It's a telling of how street life, in general, can change the lives of the most innocent. This book is the story of how life can throw you curve balls and how you can make the best (or worst) of them. This is the second book by Ms. Kia DuPree that I've enjoyed reading and I look for her to keep them coming!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!

Karma!
By Akima Rolle
Ten year old Camille Logan moves in with her new foster family The Brinkleys. The Brinkleys look like the ideal family until Mr. Brinkley decides to make late night visits to both his foster daughters. Camille and foster sister Danica adapt til the abuse and it just becomes normal for them. Camille finds handsome Chu a drug dealer who loves her so much and will do anything for her. Everything is going great for the young couple until Chu is murdered.

Chu's friend Nut preys on Camille and soon has her turning tricks for a living. Camille goes through a lot in this novel and has a hard time trying to get out of her situation.

This book had great potential but a lot of unfinished storylines made it somewhat disappointing. I didn't get enough details on her family background and I didn't know what the main character or most of the other characters looked liked. I think this was a good effort, but it was just all over the place. Better luck next time with your next book.

Overrated
By B. White
Joyce Meyer's approach is common sense and rooted in the Bible. It is easy to read and understand. For a new believer, or just someone without much time to study the Bible, there are many valuable nuggets of truth to be gained from this devotional. That said, some of the biblical interpretations and advice seem exagerrated. While the book is a devotional and its purpose is not to provide advanced hermeneutical study, I would like to see better supported conclusions. Sometimes the devotionals seem to play "fast and loose" with Scripture, relying on surface level readings and paraphrases. In a few cases, I suspected that the wrong verse was cited. But in most cases, I simply feel that her paraphrases are too loose.

To illustrate, here is one example. On page 165, she discusses going through trials and states, "By the way, the attitude that you have while you are going through is most important. The Word says that it is to be a joyful attitude, otherwise you may have to make the trip again. (James 1:2-4)." When I read this, I thought, "Hmmm, I don't remember a Bible verse that said that." I looked it up, and the NIV says here, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." There's no mention in the verse of repeating trials. I think you could make a logical argument either for or against this interpretation. My point is that the author does neither, she simply gives her own interpretation and cites the verse as though she'd quoted from it. And that bothers me.

Still, mainstream Christians will agree with at least 90% of the book's conclusions, and they are presented in a very accessible way, so it has its place as a contribution to the Christian church.

A nice devotional
By C.
This devotional is a bit different than most, in that the devotions are listed by topic, rather than dates.
There is a Bible verse at the beginning of each, then a few paragraphs by Joyce, then a "Do This" suggestion or a prayer.
It is a bit over 200 pages, so you wouldn't want it instead
of 365 daily devotion book. This would be a lovely evening devotions book, or one for a new believer.

Little Pink House: A True Story of Defiance and Courage, by Jeff Benedict

Suzette Kelo was just trying to rebuild her life when she purchased a falling down Victorian house perched on the waterfront in New London, CT. The house wasn't particularly fancy, but with lots of hard work Suzette was able to turn it into a home that was important to her, a home that represented her new found independence.

Little did she know that the City of New London, desperate to revive its flailing economy, wanted to raze her house and the others like it that sat along the waterfront in order to win a lucrative Pfizer pharmaceutical contract that would bring new business into the city. Kelo and fourteen neighbors flat out refused to sell, so the city decided to exercise its power of eminent domain to condemn their homes, launching one of the most extraordinary legal cases of our time, a case that ultimately reached the United States Supreme Court.

In Little Pink House, award-winning investigative journalist Jeff Benedict takes us behind the scenes of this case -- indeed, Suzette Kelo speaks for the first time about all the details of this inspirational true story as one woman led the charge to take on corporate America to save her home.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Benedict (The Mormon Way of Doing Business) has taken a complicated court case centered on eminent domain and turned it into a page-turner with a conscience. In 1997, an EMT named Susette Kelo left her husband, bought a cottage and started over in the economically depressed Ft. Trumbull neighborhood of New London, Conn. In February 1998, the New London Development Corporation began trying to muscle the neighborhood into selling homes to make way for a Pfizer research complex. Benedict's passionate account is rife with heroes and villains—he delights in pillorying Kelo's foil, Claire Gaudiani, the president of Connecticut College who lured Pfizer to consider New London. The fight escalated when the city tried exercising eminent domain to seize the homes of Kelo and others who refused to sell, leading to the case, Kelo v. City of New London, reaching the Supreme Court in 2005. Raising important questions about the use of economic development as a justification for displacing citizens, this book will leave readers indignant and inspired. (Feb.)

Inspirational story!
By Monie Garcia
When Susette Kelo's five boys grew up and moved out of the rural house she shared with her husband it became apparent that their marriage was no longer working. Susette made the decision to leave him and move out on her own. Having also made the decision to use no money from their joint account all Susette was able to afford was a small fixer upper on the waterfront in New London, Connecticut.

Around the same time Susette purchased her new home and began to fix it up. The New London Development Corporation was formulating a plan to re-develop the waterfront which included the Ft. Trumbull area where Susette's house was located by selling the land to the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.

When Susette and more than a few of her neighbors refused to sell, the city and the NLDC tried to take their homes using eminent domain, the law which allows the state to seize a citizen's private property for public use. What resulted was court case that made it all the way to the Supreme Court and a fight that lasted over 9 years.

Blurb: "In Little Pink House, award-winning investigative journalist Jeff Benedict takes us behind the scenes of this case -- indeed, Susette Kelo speaks for the first time about all the details of this inspirational true story as one woman led the charge to take on corporate America to save her home."

The amazing spirit of Susette Kelo and the other families that refused to leave is so moving. They refused to back down when it seemed impossible that they would ever win. I admire they way Susette showed no sign of weakness in front of the big corporation and the rest of her opposition.

The news stories about the case became national news and the Supreme Court ruling became one of the most unpopular rulings of all time. Since this case states either have or are considering amendments to the eminent domain law which prohibit the state turning over land seized under the guise of public use over to private corporations.

My review is based on the abridged audio version which was read by Maggi-Meg Reed. I think that listening to this as opposed to reading gave me a better mental picture of Susette as fighter and a strong woman to admire. I highly recommend this book to readers of all genres as it is an inspirational story.

Fabulous Read, well worth your time
By Amy D. Fairbanks
This is a fabulous book that takes you on the journey of the Ft. Trumbull neighborhood in New London, CT. You wll be outraged when you read what this neighborhood went through when put up against Eminent Domain. Its amazing to read how Susette Kelo stood up to her City, her State and the US Supreme Court, not for anything other than to hold onto the American Dream of owning and keeping her home. Its a page-turner with a conscience.

An American Disconnect
By Ted Marks
This book is a case study on the disconnect between the American people and their government at both the state and federal levels. It shows that the bureaucrats in Washington and Hartford (in this instance) simply operate in a world of their own that has no connection with the reality of the life of a typical American citizen.

(Addendum to this review: In November of 2009, Pfizer announced that it was closing its New London office, thereby reinforcing the harsh criticism of the inept development planners in New London -- as well as the critics of the controversial U.S. Supreme Court ruling against the local homeowners and in favor of the commercial development of New London on Pfizer's behalf. Moreover 43 states have since enacted legislation preventing the kind of eminent domain taking that is described in this book.)

The book's author, Jeff Benedict, tells the tale of a woman in New London, Connecticut and seven of her neighbors who watched in horror as their government proceeded to use eminent domain to seize their private homes and eventually bulldoze them to the ground in an effort to help the Pfizer drug company expand its research facilities in the town of 25,000 people on the Connecticut shore.

Worse, when the woman, Susette Kelo, and her supporters seek justice at the nation's highest judicial level, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the town has the right to seize private property to further commercial interests, all in the name of the "public good" - even though the commercial interests destroy lives in local neighborhoods.

The whole New London episode was, in a word, a scam against the private property rights of American citizens. In her dissenting opinion of the Supreme Court's ruling, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said:

"...the fallout from this decision will not be random. The beneficiaries are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political process, including large corporations and development firms. As for the victims, the government now has license to transfer property from those with fewer resources to those with more. The Founders cannot have intended this perverse result."

"Perverse" is the operative word here. The U.S. Supreme Court essentially broadened the concept of eminent domain far beyond the narrow definition that the founding fathers used to allow governments to seize private property for the "public good." Under the new Kelo precedent, local, state and federal governments can do anything they want irregardless of the injustice they inflict on private citizens and their property.

The lead character in this book is Susette Kelo, a single woman with five children. After her marriage fails, Kelo becomes a emergency medical technician in New London and on one of her calls she sees a small house on the New London waterfront near a defunct revolutionary military facility, Fort Trumbull. Kelo is captivated by the house, eventually buys it, renovates it (she paints it pink) and makes it her castle.

But not for long, because up in the ivory tower at nearby Connecticut College, the president of the exclusive school gets it in her mind that she wants to help New London rejuvenate itself. Dr. Claire Gaudiani is a saucy, ambitious woman who likes to flaunt her feminine mystique. On the prowl for a civic role, she decides that the Fort Trumbull area of New London is the perfect place to develop in support of the Pfizer pharmaceutical company's plans to expand its research facilities. Under Gaudiani's "vision," the 90-acre parcel of land will be the site of a luxury hotel, a marina, fancy shops and upscale office and residential neighborhoods that will support Pfizer's expanded facility. The scheme is an audacious effort to attract upscale tenants that will fatten New London's tax base.

The only obstacle to the scheme is the poor neighborhood of residential homes in the Fort Trumbull area. No problem, Gaudiani concludes: just seize the homes under the eminent domain principal, and bulldoze them down to the ground.

The neighborhood, however, doesn't see eye to eye with Gaudiani and her New London Development Corporation, and their plight captures the attention of a lot of sympathetic prominent officials, including New London Mayor Lloyd Beachy. Over the course of several months, the locals also attract the attention of Scott Bullock, an attorney at the Institute of Justice in Washington, DC. The institute is a public interest organization that focuses on property rights, economic liberty, free speech and school choice, and the plight of the Fort Trumbull residents whose homes are threatened by the prospect of seizure under eminent domain proved to be an ideal issue for the institute to defend..

In this well written, well documented book, author Jeff Benedict details the eight-year confrontation between Gaudiani and the NLDC versus the local neighborhood and the Institute of Justice. Benedict's narrative captures all the flavor of the participants and the issues. (Benedict is the author of Without Reservation, a book about how Native Americans in southeast Connecticut were able to build one of the largest casinos in the world through the manipulation of willing state and federal officials in Hartford and Washington).

In Benedict's account of the New London fiasco, Kelo and her neighbors are clearly the heroic victims who stands up for their rights (which they ultimately lost). The villains are Claire Gaudiani and the NLDC, Governor John Rowland (who ended up in jail on separate corruption allegations), and the majority on the U.S. Supreme Court who affirmed New London's right to seize private property in favor of private development. But there are lots of other colorful characters, as well, who figure prominently in Benedict's narrative. Former New London Mayor Lloyd Beachy took the residents side from the beginning and almost negotiated a compromise that would avoided all the legal skirmishing.

But that didn't happen. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which defied all practical logic and affirmed the city's right to seize and destroy private property in its quest for more tax revenue.

Even more astonishing, however, was the public reaction after the court's ruling. Benedict tells how Kelo and her neighbors drew support from all over the country. The Institute of Justice took advantage of that reaction to conduct an educational campaign that encouraged the U.S. Congress and state legislatures to revise the law so that private property rights were even further protected. Ironically, one of the few states not to take action in that regard was Connecticut.

In the end, Kelo and her neighbors finally, and reluctantly settled their case when the state offered significant monetary settlements to move on. Kelo held out for her pink house to be moved out of the 90-acre tract and relocated nearby where it has become a symbol of the fight for property rights. She herself found a similar waterfront property across the river in Groton where she has since relocated.

And the 90-acre plot that was supposed to be developed into an upscale commercial/residential neighborhood with a marina and luxury hotel? The local homes were flattened and the 90-acres was cleared. But Benedict reports that nothing was built, and given the current economic crisis, it is likely that for all its efforts to trample over its residents and their property rights, the state and the New London Redevelopment Corporation spent more than $70 million of public money to acquire a very large vacant lot where no one is paying any taxes. Now there's a disconnect.

Amazon.com Review
In many ways, The pH Miracle is reminiscent of an earlier generation of diet books. Much of the focus is on an intestinal cleansing program, followed by a diet that is 70 to 80 percent vegetables, coupled with a tremendous selection of supplements that authors Robert and Shelley Young recommend to everyone, no matter what their age, gender, or state of health.

The Youngs point their fingers at candida as a main culprit in the poor health of many people. Unfortunately, they back up their claims with only vague references, such as "a 1991 study" and "a leading cancer researcher." Many readers may wish for more specific evidence, but instead will have to make do with enthusiastic recommendations, alphabetized lists of vegetables, and pleasing chapters with vegetarian recipes that taste good no matter how you feel about the diet as a whole.

Sprinkled throughout the book are short testimonials of people who were able to reverse cancer, improve their digestion, and lower their cholesterol by following these recommendations, and it's hard to argue with the cholesterol-lowering results that a 70 percent vegetable diet will achieve. Still, the medical value of much else in the book remains hotly contested, and as always, it's wise to check with your doctor before starting off in search of miracles. --Jill Lightner

This book changed my life.
By Dave
A friend told me about this book when I was in Peru and having trouble with my stomach. I was on 7 or 8 perscription drugs and about as many supplements. I read this book and set out to follow Dr. Young's instructions. After 1-2 months I was off all of my medications. I had an eye doctor appointment after 3 months and he could find no sign of the Glaucoma I had been on medication for for over 4 years. I have been on this way of life for over a year now and have dropped over 45 pounds and am now at 175 - 180lbs (down from 223lbs when I started). It was a struggle at first to find new foods to eat but the benefits kept me on track. I am vegan now. Though the book doesn't call for that I found it fits my new lifestyle better. Thank you Dr. Young!!

It works miracles...as the title says!
By J. A. Thompson
I think a good dose of skepticism is warranted with all health claims...Doctors and pharmaceutical companies included. I approached Dr. Young's work with a healthy dose of skepticism, but found that his approach lacked any suggestions that would be considered harmful (unlike the dangerous Adkins diet)...and that the best test was experiential...so I tried it for myself. I lost about 10lbs in one week, while never feeling hungry, and with no increased exercise. In addition my energy level skyrocketed and remained constant throughout the day! Although I did not have any particular health concerns to address, other than fluctuating energy level and a little extra weight...so my story is not miraculous...but certainly positive.

What is miraculous is my father's story...he had been 30-40 lbs overweight, suffered from a severe case of gout and arthritis to the point he could barely walk at times. He also had a brain tumor that impaired his speech had caused him to go blind in his left eye...which the surgeon said was a permanent loss and definitely not reversible with any know treatment. Upon beginning the program my father only made some minor changes...eliminating acidic liquids like coffee, soda and sugary drinks...and replacing them with purified alkaline water...a gallon a day. Within a month he had lost 30lbs, and had completely cured his gout and arthritis! He looked and moved like he was 15 years younger! With this miraculous success, he agreed to increase the amount of raw greens in his diet and reduce meat, and other acidic foods like sweets...this was very difficult for him to do...but he plodded forward and supplemented his diet with a green drink and an alkaline salt's drink as well. He also quit drinking and smoking at this time. In January of 2009 we went to visit Dr. Young to get expert guidance for implementing the PH Miracle program and how to optimize the program to restore pH balance and increase alkalinity in the body. Dr. Young had a wonderful Physician on staff to assist with the dietary program, he also provided access to his own raw "chefs" for instruction on preparing the various meals. While we were there my father underwent daily lymphatic drainage massage, hour long far infrared sauna sessions and colonic treatments for a complete spa experience and detoxification regimen. Within four days of being on a strict alkaline/PH Miracle diet my father partially regained vision in his blind eye(as stated before an irreversible condition according to his surgeon), and his speech (which had slowed down considerably due to the brain tumor and several operations) began to speak more quickly and fluidly without pause or searching for words. He was on the road to recovering his health completely! I am grateful for the brave work of Dr. Young, because in today's hostile regulatory environment, alternative wellness approaches are vilified and their proponents are often persecuted. Health freedom and freedom of speech regarding health matters in the USA is a myth...instead we have a health dictatorship of the AMA, FDA and FTC! I can say from first hand experience this dietary approach will create miracles in your health...and can likely reverse many, if not all chronic health concerns you may be suffering from....not the least of which is cancer. I know Dr. Young can't claim his diet cures cancer...or gout...or arthritis...or blindness...but I saw it do exactly those things. One day science will return to seeking the truth and will abandon the modern politicized, for profit "pseudo science" funded by big pharmaceutical companies; that is when the "heretics" of today will be shown to have been telling the truth...paradigm shifting truth! One day the discoveries of Dr. Young will be well known...and miracles like these will be commonplace. For your own sake, be open minded enough to try if for yourself...you will be shocked by the power of food to heal you.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

"Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food."

Great informative book, an eye opener
By John
I am now re-reading this book. From the first read I wanted to get the relevant information fast. Now I am studying it. I also read reviews and have found little that can refute the basic premise and technical opinions. There is some difference of opinion on cell formation but I don't think its significant, if Young is wrong, well no one is perfect. Nutrition as we know it, is not exact nor is it the same for everyone. We all vary slightly. To those whom have given more negative reviews I would ask, what did you expect?. Do not expect a glove fit of any nutrition book. I have recently been dignosed Diabetic. I have literally eaten tons of red meat and sugar, and both parents have died relatively young (father 60/mother 68 diabetic with heart complications). I thought I knew something about nutrition but my new quest, has brought me to this book and others. The PH Miracle is incredible and credible thanks to Dr. Young. Yes he sells suppliments too but I did not feel it was pushy and he offers multiple sources. I don't follow any recipe nor this book to the letter. I am following it fairly close because it aligns to what I believe is the best human diet, largely raw vegtibles and fruits, nuts, sprouts etc.., good water. This although radical I find palatable. Lots of salad, etc.. I love the subtle flavor now that I'm off sugar and cafine. Keep in mind I ate tons of red meats, chocolate, cheeses, you name it... I have lost 35 pounds with NO HUNGER, blood sugar well in the normal range most of the time, no more headaches, bloating, constant hunger, gas, frequency of urination, lethargy, shortness of breath. I'm full of energy, mind is clearer. I feel better than I can ever remember feeling. Make of this book what suits you. I hope it will at least convince you to purge your body of processed foods. To those that complain about Dr. Youg selling supplements, I ask what do you have to say for those that produce and sell sugar, MSG, white flour (and so much more garbage food) and lie in advertising calling their trash food, in so many words, good?

The Love Revolution, by Joyce Meyer

Joyce Meyer is not satisfied with the status quo. She believes that we each need to become a revolutionary and practice love every day. And if Joyce has her way, the revolution will spread - person by person, house by house, town by town, until the old culture of selfishness and greed gives way to a new culture of concern for others.

The book is a revolutionaries' manual, a hands-on primer for bringing the Golden Rule to life in the twenty-first century. Meyer starts out by giving some stunning statistics. Right now...210,000 children will die this week because of poverty; 640 million children do not have adequate shelter; every day, 3,000 children are abducted into the sex-trafficking industry; every day, 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. She goes on to say that although crisis is global, the solution is local. We can't solve the world's problems, but that isn't a reason to remain idle.

LOVE REVOLUTION focuses on personal behavior on the local scale. It's not just a call to action; it is a call to being: being the person who goes out of your way to encourage someone who's out of hope; being the one who smiles at a stranger; being the one who is willing to do something for nothing. The paradox: when we do something for nothing, what we often get is something far greater.

"Believers and nonbelievers alike will appreciate her "nine habits of highly effective Christians." Listeners familiar with the author's strident speaking voice will enjoy hearing her smooth writing delivered by her youngest daughter, whose voice has her mother's timbre but is more appealing in its innocence and emotional steadiness."―AudioFile Magazine

Separating the Sheep From the Goats
By Alejandra Vernon
In Matthew 25 Jesus separates the sheep from the goats, and says to the sheep that they have fed Him, clothed Him, and visited Him in prison, among other things, but woe to the goats who did none of these things. Joyce Meyer's "The Love Revolution" is about being one of those who help others, and she inspires us and shows us how we can do what the Lord desires of us in showing kindness, even in very small ways, to make a difference for good.

The statistics Meyer cites are devastating, especially when it comes to children and the horrific abuse leveled against them around the world, from being sold into prostitution to being used as a labor force (or as soldiers in Uganda) as small children. These statistics instead of depressing us, can make us realize how blessed we are, no matter what our problems, and that we are always able to give of ourselves, even if it is only an encouraging word, to others in need. Walking in God's love isn't a "warm and fuzzy feeling," and often means doing something you'd rather not do, and giving something you'd rather keep, but the rewards are always great, when we do His will.

Meyer says that the root of the problem is human selfishness, and urges us to do something, anything, because doing nothing is addictive, and we can sink into our comfortable lives and let the moment slip by. Instead we should say, "what can I do for You today Lord?"

Joyce Meyer is a singular voice on television, and her great speaking gifts translate well as a writer. She is smart, unique, and with the help of the Holy Spirit manages to hit the nail so often squarely on its head. Meyer's life experiences have lead her to be a strong and incredibly helpful voice for women, but men also benefit from her insights. Known as "one of the world's leading practical Bible teachers," Meyer has written several bestsellers, and I'm sure "The Love Revolution" is destined to reach the top of the charts too.

A Call to Action for a life that makes a difference
By Dennis Muse
This is a great book, a must read for every Christian and really everyone. This subject is one I am most passionate about! There are over 2000 scriptures where God is speaking about the poor, needy and orphans, this is the one issue most on God's heart. And therefore it should be the priority for His people, the poor are the ones most dear to the heart of God and should be for His people also.

The book is about getting it, understanding the heart of God, aliening our hearts with His, understanding our responsibility to the poor and needy. Moving from a selfish life, a self centered life, to one of love for others. Having our hearts break over the things that break God's heart.

At this books core is the story of author, Joyce Meyer and how she finely got what God says about our duty to the poor and needy, how she was changed and how her ministry changed also when she got hold of Gods passion for the poor and needy. This book is about her encouraging others to get that same passion, to get Gods heart for the needy, and take action as she did. To understand our calling to take care of the poor and needy, do something, to act on what God said, to walk the talk as they say..

Ted Kennedy was asked once how he could have such an obsession with the condition of the poor being he grew up with privilege, so much wealth. Kennedy replied with a question; asking reporter if he had never read the bible?.He got it. And it dictated his life, his work, the focus of all most every bill he authored in the senate (I'm know fan of Kennedy's political stance, but admired his passion for the poor and social justice.). This is what Joyce wants for her readers, that just as it took hold of her and her life, for it to take hold of her readers and change them..

In Matthew 25 Jesus said He will separates the sheep from the goats of those who call Him Lord, and says to the sheep, that being the ones that have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, given drink to the thirsty, and visited those in prison, visited the sick. Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: But He said woe to the goats those who did none of these things. This is an issue God does not take lightly, this book is about being found a sheep in Jesus' story.

What can I do for you today?
By Tonya Speelman
Pray that prayer every day, what can I do for you Jesus? What can I do for everyone else? If everyone did that instead of living selfishly, Joyce Meyer believes we would have a whole lot more happier people. So do more kind things for people, smile when you see someone, forgive as you have been forgiven and the list goes on and on.

While I agree wholeheartedly with a major part of this book some of it like our dress, we shouldn't put on our best for the Lord. I don't think entertainment is a part of the worship service either. But to each his own.

Still, if everyone was kinder, and more loving, as our Lord has commanded us to be, the facts would show a different story. Read the book, the facts are in there and I am so glad that I was able to read and it will make me change the way I do a few things. Thank you for the food for thought!

Just Revenge, by Alan M. Dershowitz

One of the foremost courtroom lawyers of his generation. Alan M. Dershowitz takes controversial stands based on the principle of equal justice for all. Along the way, he has authored the #1 New York Times bestseller Chutzpah; the bestselling account of the Claus von Bulow case Reversal of Fortune; and the bestselling courtroom drama The Advocate's Devil. Now Dershowitz has written a novel that is at once personal, passionate, and towering: an explosive legal thriller that pits Dershowitz's literary alter ego, attorney Abe Ringel, against the worst crime of the twentieth century -- the Holocaust.

What if you witnessed the most abominable deeds that human beings can inflict upon each other? What if you came face-to-face with the very man who had slaughtered your family before your eyes? That is the question confronted by a celebrated professor named Max Menuchen. Max has found the man who had killed his entire family in cold blood more than a half century before. Max, who has never before broken a law, cannot turn down his chance for revenge.

In 1943 Marcellus Prandus was a Lithuanian militia captain who carried out the blood-thirsty orders of his Nazi commanders during World War II. Today he is an old man living outside Boston. For Max, who has discovered Prandus's identity by chance, killing him is not enough, because Prandus is already dying of cancer. How can Max make Prandus suffer exactly as Max himself did? Can Max bring himself to assassinate Prandus's children and grandchildren and make the old man watch his family die, as Max himself was forced to do?

By the time defense attorney Abe Ringel enters the case, Max has carried out an astounding act of revenge, and America'sgreat Holocaust trial has begun: an explosive legal and moral struggle to find the light of justice within the darkness of human evil. With Max facing almost certain conviction, Ringel desperately tries to prove his actions we

Amazon.com Review
In his first courtroom drama, The Advocate's Devil, Alan M. Dershowitz introduced us to defense attorney Abe Ringel as he represented a rapist. That book probed a controversial legal issue--what happens when a defender doubts his own client's innocence? In Dershowitz's second legal thriller--Abe (along with the whole judicial system) is confronted with a still bigger dilemma: Is a Holocaust survivor entitled to seek revenge on the perpetrator who butchered his family some 50 years earlier?

Max Menuchen was just 18 years old when Captain Marcelus Prandus of the Lithuanian Auxiliary Militia forced his family (and dozens of other Jewish families) into the Ponary Woods in Vilna, Lithuania, making them dig their own graves. The young man could only watch as Prandus shot his pregnant wife, Leah, and baby boy, Efraium. Escaping a similar fate by "dumb luck," Max survived the bullet, but not the torment and guilt that would haunt him for decades. Then, in 1999, Max makes the chilling discovery that Prandus escaped any punishment and now lives in a small Massachusetts town, surrounded by a loving family.

The world didn't care about what happened in the Ponary Woods. That was what was destroying Max. That was what drove him to the vengeance in which he was now engaged. Determined to make the former Nazi suffer, Max and an old acquaintance kidnap Prandus, tie him to a chair, and psychologically torture him. Prandus then commits suicide to escape his own "suffering." Max now stands accused of murder--and his old friend Abe Ringel must prove that the revenge was just, for the sake of the Menuchens and for all those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis.

The legal mechanics of Max's trial are hardly exceptional (author Dershowitz has a tendency to slip back into his other role as Harvard law professor, and we sometimes feel more like students than readers). However, the moral implications of such a controversial trial make Just Revenge a compelling, and ultimately thought-provoking, read. --Naomi Gesinger

From Publishers Weekly
Who determines justice? In this thought-provoking and ambitious novel, lawyer and Harvard professor Dershowitz creates a decide-for-yourself scenario that is both chilling and life affirming. Elderly scholar Max Menuchen is a Holocaust survivor who endures haunting memories of the 1942 massacre of his infant son, pregnant wife and extended family in Vilna, Lithuania. His grandfather's last cry for revenge echoes constantly in his mind, even after he emigrates to America and builds a successful career. Finally, after a lifetime of survivor guilt, a chance encounter in Cambridge, Mass., leads him to the Nazi killer of his family, Marcelus Prandus, who lives nearby, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, his past never revealed to his American-born family. To prosecute him for war crimes appears to be futileAPrandus is terminally ill and would die before any trial came to pass. Overcome with frustration and a burning need to avenge his family's deaths, MaxAan otherwise gentle, kindly academicAconceives a plan to punish Prandus that is both shocking and brilliant. Ultimately, a psychologically devastated Prandus takes his own life. Is Max responsible for his death? Were his actions morally acceptable? And of immediate relevance, were they legal? Defense lawyer Abe RingelAreturning from Dershowitz's previous novel The Advocate's DevilAtakes on his old friend Max's case and seeks to prove that retribution and justice are not irreconcilable. Full of clever twists, Dershowitz's latest endeavor is intricately plotted, though the dialogue is on the stiff side and frequently more utilitarian than conversational. Subtlety is not Dershowitz's strong suit, nor is literary finesse, but he makes up for these shortcomings with the dramatic and tragic events that frame the plot, and the intensity of his moral argument. He dedicates the novel to the members of his family who were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators. Agent, Helen Rees. 5-city author tour.

From Kirkus Reviews
A clunky but compelling novel that dramatizes the question of whether a Holocaust survivor is entitled to revenge 50 years after the war. The law utterly failed Max Menuchen back in 1942, when Captain Marcellus Prandus and his Gestapo unit snatched Max's family from their Passover Seder, herded them into a nearby Vilna forest, where they were forced to dig their own graves, and methodically executed them all, beginning with the youngest. Max survived only by playing dead. Now a respected professor of biblical studies at Harvard Divinity School, he prepares to rewrite his illustrious obituary as soon as he sees Marcellus's son Paul, who unwittingly tells him his father is still alive. The case against Marcellus is so strong that it looks at first as if American law will succeed where Lithuanian law failed. But Marcellus is dying of cancer, and when Max realizes that legal tactics will surely delay his incarceration and deportation until after his death, Max determines to become his own law. Killing Marcellus would be too easy; killing his innocent grandson Marc, eight, seems at once insufficient, unjust, and impossible; even tossing a bomb into a family birthday party will not leave Marcellus feeling Max's agony and despair. Then Max's protge Danielle Grant, searching Jewish law for moral precedents, comes up with a diabolically clever ``Maimonidean solution'' that will exact proportional revengethough it will land both Max and Danielle in court, where Max will be defended by his old friend Abe Ringel (The Advocate's Devil, not reviewed). Abe's jobto make Max's revenge seem just to a jury of law-abiding citizenswill tax him, his client, and the lead witnesses to to the limit. Though Dershowitz (The Vanishing American Jew, 1997, etc.) is no threat to Aeschylus as a moralist or Scott Turow as a stylist, his story will leave readers pondering the morality of revenge right down to the final melodramatic twist. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Thought provoking and moving
By A Customer
This book makes you FEEL as well as think about an extremely disturbing moral and legal dilemma. It tempts readers to sympathize, if only for a moment and if only at a very human level, with the desire for a terrible act of revenge against a former Nazi butcher, including the death of innocent family members. It then turns around and invites the reader to sympathize, if only for a moment and at a very human level, with the desire for vengeance by the son of the former Nazi butcher. Finally, it forces readers to decide what kind of punishment the law itself is entitled to impose. The most "annoying" thing about the book is that it NEVER oversimplifies, on either legal or moral issues. It will really engage readers who are not satisfied with pat solutions, and are willing to learn something about themselves from their own reactions to a very suspenseful told story.

A time to remember, and a time to avenge...
By Elliot Fishman
Dershowitz reminds us that for victims of an atrocity such as the Holocaust, remembering is not enough. I felt Max's anguish and cheered him on - but also felt relieved that his revenge was visited upon the evil-doer rather than creating more innocent victims. Like Simon Wiesenthal in the "Sunflower," and Jerry Marcus in "Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Zev," Dershowitz shows an exquisite sensitivity to the plight of those who survived the Holocaust and live daily with its legacy. He also understands that evil must be rooted out at its source - which is "Just Revenge."

RESPONSE TO N.Y. OBSERVER REVIEW
By A Customer
Alan Dershowitz's "Just Revenge" is a masterfully crafted story that challanges its readers to question their most basic instincts and ethics. The issues, dilemmas and solutions are presented through a thrilling and haunting story that keeps you from putting this book down, while at all times trying to put yourself in the shoes of the main character "Max Menuchen". Upon completeing this first-rate novel I was left compelled to ask myself who, at the NY Observer, chose to write a reveiw, and just what book had they actually read. Not only does the NY Observer reviewer totally miss the mark, but they completely betray their ignorance by trying to imply plagerized material from the wonderful Elie Wiesel book "Night". After re-reading "Night" I could find no similarity in the scenes referred to by the Observer and was left to wonder if this reviewer had some other agenda in what was nothing more than an outrageous attempt to slander Mr. Dershowitz. In fact, on the rear jacket of "Just Revenge", Elie Wiesel himself gives the book a glowing endorsement. Read this book, it will keep you talking and asking questions of yourself for some time.

Gideon's Gift (The Red Gloves Collection #1), by Karen Kingsbury

One long-ago Christmas, Earl Gibson lost the two things most precious to him: his wife and daughter. Angry and heartbroken, he ended up living on the streets and abandoned any belief he'd once had in God.
Ten years later Big Earl meets Gideon, a seven-year-old leukemia patient who believes with all her heart that "Christmas means never having to ask God how much he loves us." Gideon is determined to reach this lonely and hurting man who hates Christmas--and he is just as determined to rebuff her. It will take a miracle for Earl to come to understand the true meaning of Christmas. But if he can accept what Gideon wants to give him, he might find that he can return the favor with a precious gift of his own.
In GIDEON'S GIFT, Karen Kingsbury reminds us that Christmas is still a time of miraculous possibilities if only we reach out to those around us.

From Publishers Weekly
Kingsbury, a beloved novelist in the CBA market, is known for weepy tales replete with hospital bedside scenes, emotional reunions and miracles. This eager if predictable novella will please her established fans, and may win a few new ones as well, provided they are armed with enough Kleenex. In the story, the Scrooge-like Earl Badgett-a grumpy and aggressive version of the typical widower of CBA fiction-has his Christian faith revived through the efforts of an eight-year-old girl. Pious, mature children who lead adults back to faith were a staple of 19th-century domestic fiction, and remain so in the CBA today; sweet little Gideon Mercer is no exception. And if the novel's emotional quotient weren't high enough, she's even suffering from leukemia. Despite the overwrought stereotypes, Kingsbury writes quite well; her skill with pacing goes a long way toward redeeming this tired and contrived plot.

From Library Journal
Gideon Mercer, an eight-year-old leukemia patient, is hoping for a huge Christmas miracle. She does not wish that her parents will scrape together $50,000 for a life-saving bone marrow transplant for her. Nor does she want her dream Christmas with a light-filled tree and a truck for her little brother. Instead, Gideon hopes that the belligerent homeless man she met while her family worked in a food kitchen will believe in God. Five years prior, Earl Badgett lost his faith when his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. Unable to go on, he took to the streets, hoping to die. An unexpected Christmas gift from Gideon brings God back into Earl's life with repercussions for both of them. This pleasantly conventional story will appeal to sentimental readers. Great reading!
By Huntress Reviews
Gideon is an angelic little girl who is dying with cancer. However, just at Christmas, in the season of miracles, she gets one, remission from her disease. Determined to spread the joy, she uses all she has saved to buy a cynical, homeless man a pair of red mittens, hopefully replicating the ones he lost, and with their loss, lost hope and faith. Somehow, the used mittens she is able to buy are the very ones that he lost. Then, life turns for the worse, and Gideon needs another miracle. Her cancer is back, and worse than ever. Will there be another miracle, or will she join the angels for whom she is named?
**** As always, Ms. Kingsbury delivers a story that warms your heart through the tears pouring down your face. Closing one of her books never fails to leave the reader untouched and with a new lease on life. I also encourage readers to take time to read the author's message at the end and support the projects mentioned so as to help bring miracles to more people. ****

A must-read Christmas treasure!
By Soozie4Him
I just loved this book! I am not a fiction-reader, and if you check out my other reviews, you'll see that I'm very picky about my fiction! Most of my reading is Christian non-fiction.
Having said that, you MUST READ THIS BOOK! The author does an excellent job of decribing Gideon's sweet spirit, her parents' love and concern for their sick daughter, and the homeless man Earl's toughness and depression and his giving up on life.
Before buying a book (or checking one out at the library), I look at how it's laid out. This book beckons you with its blue typeface and the motif of the gloves at the beginning of each chapter.
Most of all, you have to read this book for the amazing story. This book WILL become a Christmas classic. It is poignant, gentle, and touching without being saccharin. If you're looking to read a good story that will stick with you for a long time to come, without investing hours of reading time, this is a must-read for you!
I would highly recommend giving this book as a gift - perhaps before Christmas? The message is one of God's miracles and hope and what happens when you BELIEVE.
