Amazon.com Review
Tim Green is proof that all football players aren't meat-headed Neanderthals. Green, an ex-player who has made his mark as a commentator on National Public Radio and the Fox Network, shows both his love of the game and his insights into its problems in this collection of some 70 essays on his experience in the National Football League. From the physical brutality of the sport -- he suffered 12 concussions as a player -- to the use of performance enhancing drugs, to the sport's connections with the mob, Green writes clearly and evenly about the dilemmas and deals the most professional football fans know nothing about -- the dark side to America's favorite pastime.

From Publishers Weekly
A former player for the Atlanta Falcons and now a TV broadcaster on the Fox network, Green (Titans) has an enduring love for football, but that does not prevent his seeing the unlovelier aspects of the sport. Chief among them are the physical tolls the game exacts: every player, he stresses, suffers discomfort in every game of every season. The injuries are usually temporary but are sometimes permanently disabling, including concussions (Green had 12 during his career). There are the hardships of training camps and exhibition games, which sap athletes' energies even before the regular season starts, violent players and team doctors who urge even wounded players to stay on the field. Enemies may be teammates, since offensive and defensive units each have special bonds. Other obstacles include performance drugs, artificial turf, rowdy fans and the media, resented because reporters have never played pro football and, in Green's view, don't know what they are writing about. The author also provides insights into good and bad venues, superstitions, agents and the realities of play: "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'." Eye-opening for grid fans. Available as a Time Warner AudioBook.

From Library Journal
Green, a novelist (Titans, LJ 10/15/94), ex-pro football player, and football commentator for Fox Television, offers a collection of approximately 70 brief, engagingly written essays on such dark topics as drug use, sex, violence, injuries, cheating, gambling, and money in professional football. The essays are similar to the insightful commentary that Green supplies for National Public Radio. Refreshingly, the tone is not that of a bitter, tell-all expose but is balanced and even-handed. The book's one weakness is that topics change from chapter to chapter without any overall organizing structure. The author's message may have been clearer had the essays been arranged in subject-oriented sections. Ultimately, football fans will devour this. Recommended for all public libraries.?John M. Nothing New About The NFL
By C. Baker
This book about life in the NFL is really a series of very short essays. There is absolutely nothing new here and the essays are so short that there is no depth at all to the individual subject matters. The cover of the book really tries to draw you in by claiming to tell you about the "dark" side of the NFL, but frankly there is very little dirt here, and certainly none that hasn't already been out in the public domain for some time. Granted this book was published around 12 years ago, but given the content I am surprised it is even still in print.

As a football fan, I am disappointed. There is not much to recommend here.

No compelling stories. No name dropping. This was a dry book by a talented writer who could have done better.
By Matthew Robinson
Look, I will be honest. This book was a solid analysis of what it's like to play pro football. But it was nothing special.

Like one of the Amazon customers (Crosstie Walker) on this site pointed out, you could find what Tim Green wrote in this book in your local newspaper or on the Internet. If you read this book when it came out in 1996 use the local or national newspapers for inside scoop on the league. If you read and finished this book in 2016 like I did, you could find the 'insider" information on the Internet or by spending some odd time at an NFL Training Camp.

Look, Green is a damn good writer but this book didn't hold my attention all that much. I didn't play in the NFL and never will. But give me one day or one week in an NFL locker room or at an NFL practice, and I'll give you more inside information on the NFL in just 20 pages than this whole book did with 272 pages.
