Mike's Election Guide 2008, by Michael Moore

In his first book in five years, Michael Moore brings us the definitive guide to the 2008 election.

After a diastrous war, the failure to catch bin Laden, millions of families who have lost their homes, the Katrina debacle, soaring gas prices feeding record oil company profits, and the largest national debt caused by the biggest spending and borrowing administration in American history, the country has had it with conservatives, right-wingers and Republicans. A thrilling election season is now upon us. Obama vs. McCain. One candidate has promised a presidency different from any other, one that will take us forward to embrace the hope of the 21st century. The other candidate says he has no idea how to use a computer.

Welcome to MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- Michael Moore's effort to make sense of the this fall's race for the White House and Congress. In it, Moore answers the nation's most pressing questions: "Why is John McCain so angry?," "Do the Democrats Still Drink from a Sippy Cup and Sleep with the Light On?," Can I get into the Electoral College with only a 2.0 gpa?" and "How many Democrats does it take to lose the most winnable election in American history?"

It's a great year to be an American and a voter. Don't miss out on all the fun! And don't miss out on MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- it's the indispensable book that belongs in every American's back pocket this season.

From Publishers Weekly
With his characteristically smug, sarcastic, nudge-and-wink style, Moore shows how Democrats can score a slam-dunk in November in a guidebook comprised of half-kidding essays, all within Moore's prescribed range: wry humor, pissed-off rants and sweeping generalizations. In Moore's book, Obama's victory is a more-or-less forgone conclusion; naturally, he offers Obama a list of 10 Presidential Decrees for his First Ten Days (bring back the draft, but just for rich kids; ban high fructose corn syrup; free HBO for everyone). His opening salvo, "Ask Mike," includes questions like "Why should I vote? It only encourages them," and explanations that include a possibly inflammatory take on McCain's stint in Vietnam as a pilot and prisoner of war; Moore points out that if McCain's military service is up for discussion, why won't anyone ask what McCain did to the Vietnamese? Sure to provoke, Moore covers his back with a bibliography and an index of sound bites his right-wing opponents can attack him with ("Long live Chairman Mao!"). Readers will get what they expect; Moore's guide probably won't change any minds, but it's an entertaining, occasionally thought-provoking take on this year's big event.

Review
Read by Moore with his trademark sardonic sense of humor, the book is less a guide to the election than it is a manual that analyzes the list of mistakes the right wing has made in the last eight years. Moore is always good at looking at both sides of the story with raw honesty, and this book is no different. He gives listeners plenty of reasons to vote for Obama, but more prominently, a plethora of reasons not to vote for another four (or eight) years of a Republican administration. Ultimately, Moore offers an entertaining reading that will keep listeners engaged. (Audiofile 2008)

Expecting more

The book is amusing enough, and it does have a lot of facts, but I just wasn't thrilled with it. I adore my friend Michael, but I was a little disappointed,

Is it Saint Michael or Saint George against the dragon?
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
A little book that has to be read in three hours at the most and on the outside. Pungent with hot language, fragrant with nice flower names for disgusting stinking old bald politicians, packed with a few truths and many truths and a half. This book is brilliant and it is already three months old, June 2008. Of course he could not envisage the time when the George of the White House was going to nationalize the American banking system. He could not imagine either that China was going to buy Rothschild and the Japanese another New York bankrupted bank, but the Federal Government - what does he say the McCain about less government? - buying out the failed banking system in its nearly total globality, that was unimaginable even to the most hazardous minds just two weeks ago. But George did it. A real George as the French used to say before they started to call those people who are slightly mentally impaired cakes and then some other bird names. But the Guide is still valid. Valid about the failed American electoral system that is absolutely not democratic since it can declare elected someone who has not been elected, and even decide that millions of ballots can be nullified by a Supreme Court decision. Right he is that the Democratic party is not very swift when it comes to winning elections. They must be forced to win, forced by fate, forced by the three weird sisters beyond there who spin, measure and cut the thread of our life. A whole legion of walkyries are necessary to chase the Democratic Party into winning an election? It is so much more comfortable to lose and be an eternal opposition. Yet there is a fair chance that Obama will win, that the two houses of Congress will have a comfortable and reinforced democratic majority, and it is even possible that they get the famous three fifth majority so much needed for all constitutional amendments and overruling the President's veto. And yet they may lose the Presidential election if they do not react fast and fight with more pugnacity the opponent, in fact the opponents because the Republican party decided to have two horses harnessed to the single cart of the presidential ticket, two horses if we want, because it is a way of speaking since one is an old nag and the other is a zebra of a potentially convicted power abuser. But the system being what it is Obama will only win if he is able to bring five to ten million new voters into the game, the battle, the fight, the final guerilla warfare confrontation and conflagration. So you better hurry up and volunteer. The first ten reforms of the first ten days of this reformistic presidency are funny for some, evident for others and always full of sense, if not always of common sense. He is not always well informed, for example about the French social system or health care system. It's true he apparently got his information from the French embassy. He might have been better inspired to ask someone who really knows, not an ambassador who has never had any real problem with anything in his life. Hardships are a lot better as a school than the silver spoon you are born with in your mouth in the big diplomatic families of the French republic. But the best part is his suggestion to get all the corpses and bandits occupying the White House out of it in a perpetrator walk excellent. That's all they deserve and I think that perpetrator walk should be advertised so that as many discontented people could come with rotten eggs and over-ripe tomatoes to adorn their faces qui red and yellow and white, the tricolor flag of yellow bellies, liars, thieves and other perambulating dead people we have forgotten to bury. Please catch up on that urgent task and make them walk an infinite line between two rows of angry citizens. Don't kill them please, just shame them for life and make sure everyday they will be reminded with their lies, thefts, crimes, murders, etc. Rush to this little book and read it before the night is out.
