The Gate House, by Nelson DeMille

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of bestseller DeMille will welcome this sequel to The Gold Coast (1990), in which Susan Sutter, then the wife of tax attorney John Sutter, had a torrid affair with Frank Bellarosa, a powerful Mafia boss and the Sutters' neighbor on Long Island's tony Gold Coast, with fatal results for Bellarosa. After divorcing Susan, John sailed the world for three years, then built himself a new life in London. Now John has returned to the small gatehouse that was once part of his ex-wife's family estate, only to find Bellarosa's thuggish son, Anthony, living next door. In another coincidence, Susan has just reacquired the six-bedroom guest cottage where she and John lived as a married couple on her family's former property. Susan and John soon begin to explore an improbable reconciliation, even as they suspect she may be in Anthony's gun sights. The plot more than takes its time getting to its violent and predictable resolution, but DeMille devotees should have plenty of fun along the way. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
In this long-awaited but ponderous sequel to The Gold Coast (1990), it is ten years later, and John Sutter has returned for the funeral of a woman who isn't dead yet. He's also looking to restart his life and possibly hook up with his ex-wife, Susan, who'd had an affair with a local Mafia don she later killed. Confounding the problem is the don's son, who has taken over the family business and wants vengeance against both John and Susan. While there are interesting characters, and Sutter's first-person observations are clever, it takes forever for the action to get going. Even an exciting climax doesn't help. DeMille has developed a reputation for fast-paced action thrillers, and this is neither. His name will guarantee a level of success, and those patrons who enjoyed reading about the lives of the rich and decadent in The Gold Coast will enjoy this sequel. The rest will hope DeMille's next effort is more compelling. For larger collections. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/08.]—Robert Conroy, Warren, MI

From Booklist
Readers who have been waiting nearly 20 years for a sequel to The Gold Coast (1990) can begin celebrating: this new novel, which picks up 10 years after John Sutter’s wife, Susan, killed her lover, a Mafia don, is exactly what they’ve been waiting for. After divorcing his wife and sailing around the world, Sutter took up residence in England. But now, nine months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he has to come back to Long Island’s Gold Coast to tie up some loose ends. He’s worried about how he will handle a reunion with Susan but that turns out to be less painful than he anticipated, even somewhat invigorating. Also taking him by surprise is the job offer from Anthony Bellarosa, son of the murdered don, who wants John to be his consigliere. The offer seems genuine, but readers will wonder if this is a textbook case of “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.” DeMille perfectly captures the tone that made The Gold Coast a best-seller—a readable combination of social satire and easygoing humor—and his re-creation of the principal characters, John and his ex-wife Susan is so precise it’s as though the two novels were written back-to-back. Revisiting characters and themes after such a long time is always a risk, but this one gets it right. Expect high demand for that rare publishing phenomenon: a sequel that doesn’t disappoint. --David Pitt

The Gate House Is "Fast Out Of The Gate," Then Coasts Until The Last Twenty-Five Pages!
By Bobbewig
If The Gate House was a race horse, I'd say it came out fast from the gate, pretty much coasted for the large part of the race, then put on the speed in the last couple of lengths. For this reader, The Gate House "placed" in the race but was not the big "winner." I've been a big fan, but with diminishing intensity, of Nelson DeMille since his first book, By The Rivers Of Babylon. Demille's The Gold Coast, to which The Gate House is the sequel, is one of my favorite books of his; and so, when I recently received an ARC of The Gate House I put it at the very top of my to-be-read list. Overall, I enjoyed The Gate House but not as much as The Gold Coast. I'd grade it a B-.The main reason being that with the exception of the last 25 pages of the 667 copy I read, little of any substance happens after the first 100 or so pages. In typical DeMille fashion, his character development is very strong -- particularly in regards to his main male character, John Sutter, whose sarcastic wit permeates throughout this book -- and his narrative ability is at the top of his game. However, after several hundred pages of appreciating these characteristics I was getting very impatient for some action and thrills to occur. I would have enjoyed The Gate House much more if it had 200-300 pages less fluff/filler. The Gate House, for me, is a classic example of the adage, "Less is more." Despite these limitations, if you're a fan of The Gold Coast you're going to want to read The Gate House, which takes place ten years later when Sutter has come home to the Gold Coast of Long Island to attend the funeral of an old family servant. I doubt if you're going to dislike The Gate House. As a matter of fact, you'll probably think it is pretty good. The purpose of my review is to urge you to not -- as I did -- expect a book as good as the one on which it is based.

Good, but definitely not DeMille's best
By HeyJudy
I was so pleased to be able to read Nelson DeMille's latest novel that I didn't even wait for Amazon to it deliver to me, as is my wont. Instead, I rushed out to my neighborhood bookstore to buy an undiscounted copy on the day of publication.

First, let me state that DeMille is my favorite novelist, which may be obvious from reading the paragraph above. Therefore, it is possible that I hold him to a higher standard than I do other writers. Either way, THE GATE HOUSE is a good book. It's just not a great book, though I think that most authors would be pleased to craft anything as worthwhile as this. DeMille, however, may be a victim of his own success, because THE GATE HOUSE simply is not up to the bar he set himself.

John Corey, his protagonist in a quartet of books, is a wiseguy (not the Mafia kind) who is lovable in spite of his big mouth. John Whitman Sutter, the protagonist of THE GATE HOUSE, merely seems like a self-impressed, condescending jerk. I did read and like THE GOLD COAST, which also was about John Sutter, but I don't remember having such a negative reaction then to this character.

In THE GATE HOUSE, DeMille blends some of his favorite themes, including Long Island, the Mafia and the Muslim terrorists. The only thing missing is Russian oligarchs; having read and admired THE CHARM SCHOOL, I suspect that he is saving them for his next novel.

The novel is well-structured and never seems strained, as happens with many thrillers. At the same time, Sutter and his wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter, are so unsympathetic that it is hard to become engaged in their problems. It is difficult to care about them, it is difficult to like them.

In addition, a few plot points are a bit pat. Why did Sutter's former in-laws always hate him with such intensity? By the standards of these characters, he seems an ideal consort for their daughter. And the resumption of feelings between the former spouses also seems too fast to be realistic.

As for the "Gold Coast," Long Island's North Shore, I grew up near there myself (but light years away in terms of affluence) and DeMille does an excellent job of conveying a sense of the place. Dominick Dunne, however, does it better. With the exception of perhaps Palm Beach in the United States and certain royal palaces in Britain and Europe, there are few other communities where the occupants retain the expectations and entitlements of those remaining old-money families of the Gold Coast.

DeMille also makes good work of the region's fascination with the Mafia. He explores this fascination meaningfully, and his descriptions definitely feel authentic.

As for the terrorists, this subplot turns out to be insignificant yet, ultimately, important in advancing the story.

There are a couple of oddities. DeMille gives a retired Mafia lawyer the exact same name as am important Federal judge in New York; it does not appear, from the acknowledgments at the back of the book, that this was done intentionally, as a compliment. And he gives the Mafia Don's limousine company the same name as a car service/ limo company that has been a presence in New York for decades. Just seems sloppy, when one thinks about it....

In fairness, the whole story all works. The plot is intricate, careful and plausible. Maybe it was nothing more, nothing less, than unsympathetic characters, but I was not engrossed by THE GATE HOUSE. By the end of the book, I did not care about the outcome, one way or another. And this never before has happened to me with a DeMille novel, and it is why I found THE GATE HOUSE a disappointing read.

Give us a break
By Meredith Bradbury
Nelson, Nelson, Nelson...get an editor, man. And then get a plot. And then find yourself a nice quiet place where you can write undisturbed and undistracted. I've always thought Nelson DeMille was an uneven writer. I've loved some of his books, or parts of them, and barely tolerated others. But this mess was unreadable. I got through 150 pages and thought, "what am I doing with this time-waster?" The main character was insufferable and obnoxious. The scenes dragged on interminably. It took him 6 or 7 pages to get out of the old lady's bedroom from right when he was on the verge of leaving. And then he gives her a kiss! But I thought he hated her. Let's not even talk about the scenes with the Mafia Don's Son, Anthony. Just so much could have been cut here to make the book tighter and more interesting. No, I mean it, Nelson. Get away by yourself where you can think and then hire an excellent editor to help you craft your story. Then we'll see.

Finding What Matters
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
In WHAT MATTERS MOST, Renita Weems takes an in-depth look at the Song of Solomon from the Old Testament of the Bible. Early on, she notes that this particular book is unique in several ways; it is essentially made up of love poems that might be considered by some to be bordering on erotic and God is never explicitly mentioned. Another important way in which the Song of Solomon is unique is the fact that it is the only book of the Bible that is predominantly told from a woman's point of view. Like many other women in the Bible, we don't learn a lot of biographical information about the Shulammite who narrates most of the Song of Solomon. Weems argues however, that the poetry itself provides us with enough information to know that this unnamed Shulammite woman is one of the earliest examples of a strong, black, Christian woman.
Aside from providing the history, background, and controversy surrounding the various interpretations of the Song of Solomon, the author uses the personality characteristics she derived about the Shulammite woman to create a blue print for women of color. This blueprint will help women learn to love themselves more fully and to truly take to heart the things that should matter most in life. She argues that as women, so often we get so caught up in helping other people and being what they need us to be that we neglect our individual need to grow and thrive. She goes on to note that in order to be open to the love that God has for us we must be willing to break the mold, shatter stereotypes, and embrace all aspects of ourselves. She covers such subjects as identity, balance, sexuality, body image and overcoming adversity, using the Song of Solomon and her own experiences to illustrate her key points. At the end of each chapter she poses questions for self-reflection which she encourages readers to write about on their own.
This is the kind of book that will make you think. I found myself thinking "Wow! I do that all the time!" While I may not agree with all of her reasoning, I enjoyed the fact that it challenged me both mentally and spiritually. This book would be an excellent book to discuss as a group and is sure to incite some heated debates. (...)

Great Advice for Managers, Teachers, etc.
By A Customer
As a person who has worked an office job and as a teacher, I can tell you that this book has great information for both office managers and teachers. I really wish that my office job employer would have used Mary Kay's advice; I sincerely believe that it would have made me a better employee who cared about my job and motivated me to do my best. As a teacher, many of the suggestions can be applied to creating positive interactions with students. It's such a shame that this book is out of print because it is wonderful! Here's a summary of Mary Kay's advice, taken from the back cover:
"This is the management philosophy that turned Mary Kay Ash's storefront cosmetics business into a multimillion dollar corporation in just twenty years. Based on the age-old Golden Rule, it encourages managers to treat staff, customers, suppliers -everyone- with the same care, consideration, and concern they would like to receive themselves. It brought spectacular success to Mary Kay. Here's how it can work for you.
Recognize the Value of People. People are you company's number one asset. When you treat them as you would like to be treated yourself, everyone benefits.
Praise Your People to Success. Recognition is the most powerful of all motivators. Even criticism can build confidence when it's `sandwiched' between layers of praise.
Tear Down That Ivory Tower. Keep all doors open. Be accessible to everyone. Remember that every good manager is also a good listener...
Create a Stress-Free Workplace. By elimination stress factors -fear of the boss, unreasonable deadlines, and others- you can increase and inspire productivity.
Develop and Promote People from Within. Upward mobility for employees in your company builds loyalty. People give you their best when they know they'll be rewarded.
Keep Business in Its Proper Place. At Mary Kay Cosmetics the order of priorities is faith, family, and career. The real key to success is creating an environment where people are encouraged to balance the many aspects of their lives."

Night Blooming, by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

At the forced invitation of 8th century Germanic king Karl-lo-Magne (Charlemagne), Hiermon Ragoczy de Santus Germainius, a dark and strange man rumored to have traveled to many far places, makes the dangerous journey to France. He is called to validate the authenticity of the king's newly purchased maps, but unbeknownst to Karl-lo-Magne, Ragoczy's knowledge stems from centuries of being chased from these countries, rather than traveling through them. Despite his longing for peace, he yields to Karl-lo-Magne. What he does not expect, though, is to meet the albino woman, Gynethe Mehaut, who shares his curse of solitude. Showing signs of stigmata, she seeks peace from the church. But when she is taken to Rome, accusations of witchcraft fly, and she is left with a difficult choice-one that even Ragoczy cannot deny.

From Publishers Weekly
The prolific Yarbro (Hotel Transylvania, etc.) flawlessly weaves a meticulous historical milieu and enthralling characters with the fantastic in her 15th volume to feature compassionate vampire Ragoczy, Count Saint-Germain. Here known as Hiernom Rakoczy, he travels in A.D. 796 to Tours and later Aachen to advise the Frankish king, Karl-lo-Magne (Charlemagne), who's closely allied with Pope Leo III. Meanwhile, saintly albino Gynethe Mehaut struggles within a church that can't decide whether her stigmatic wounds denote holiness or blasphemy. The white woman and the dark count, still recovering from an ill-fated encounter in Come Twilight (2000), eventually cross paths in Rome, where their passions ignite, though those expecting the high eroticism of Laurell K. Hamilton will be disappointed. The melancholy count regains some joie de vivre when he's reunited with his old friend, the always remarkable Atta Olivia Clemens. Richly rewarding for longtime readers, the novel also provides a good entry point for new recruits with its subtly supplied back story. The eighth century European setting is more accessible than the 14th century India-Asia setting of the previous book in the series, A Feast in Exile (2001). In Yarbro's saga the vampires are honorable, civilized and heroic it's humankind that's horrific. Current popular vampire fiction reflects her influence more than that of the better known Anne Rice, and her noble vampire deserves comparable sales.and Stoker awards.

From Library Journal
More vampires, this time in the 15th novel in the series featuring Le Comte de Saint-Germain. A sinister stranger in the court of Karl-lo-Magne (that's Charlemagne) has an amazing knowledge of maps perhaps because he's traveled all over the map for centuries.

From Booklist
Yarbro's vampire hero Saint-Germain continues his wanderings through history, this time in the late eighth century. The great French king Karl-lo-Magne summons Saint-Germain, here known as Hiernom Rakoczy, to his court. On the way, Rakoczy and his entourage meet Gynethe Mehaut, a young albino afflicted with a stigmata and awaiting news of her fate at a convent. Karl-lo-Magne sends Rakoczy back to the convent to examine Gynethe Mehaut. The vampire sympathizes with her sufferings, but he is unable to ascertain her condition, though he suspects it is natural rather than divine in origin. Volunteering to accompany her to the papal court in Rome, Rakoczy soon finds himself haunting his old haunts and falling in love with his charge. But Gynethe Mehaut is in great danger from those who feel threatened by her, and all Rakoczy's efforts may not be enough to save her. Fans of the Saint-Germain series and newcomers to it will all be rooting for Yarbro's wily hero. Kristine Huntley

Fifteenth in the "Saint Germain" series.
By James Yanni
Or sixteenth, if you count "Out of the House of Life", a spinoff novel mostly about Madeline de Montalia, Saint Germain's lover from the first novel in the series, "Hotel Transylvania", by the time of "House" a vampire in her own right.
Or nineteenth, if you count "A Flame In Byzantium", "Crusader's Torch", and "A Candle For D'artagnan", all centering on the life of Olivia Atta Clemens, his lover from "Blood Games", third in the series, likewise a vampire herself in these stories.
As in all of the books in this series, Saint Germain is an unmitigated hero, gentle, kind, suave, cultured, generous, intelligent, wise. Some readers of vampire fiction don't want their vampires to be good guys; at best, they want engaging bad boys like Anne Rice's "Lestat". At worst, they want ravening demons. If you fall into this category, don't read this book (or any book in this series). You won't get what you're looking for here. In Yarbro's books, the bad guys are generally the political and religious powers that be in the historical periods that she writes about.
Which brings us to one of the most fascinating things about this series: the historical settings. Saint Germain is a vampire who has lived for 4000 years; as such, each novel sets him in a different time period; this one sets him in the court of Charlemagne, circa 800 CE. Don't read these books as vampire fiction; read them as historical romances.
One of the few negative aspects to this series is that regular readers know from earlier-written books set in later historical periods that most of the romances are doomed to tragic endings; if they weren't, the romantic interests would have become vampires, and we'd have seen them or heard them referred to in later-period books. This gets a bit depressing after a while, but is hardly enough to keep the series from being worthwhile.
I would put this book about on a par with "Blood Roses" or "Darker Jewels", not as good as "Writ In Blood" or "Better In The Dark", but better than most of the series.

Saint-Germain is our vampire-embedded-in-History
By A Customer
I've read every one of CQY's vampire novels. Yes, they are slightly formulaic, yes they are historical--but what do you think the life of a putative vampire who is thousands of years old would be? Most tellingly, Saint-Germain, despite his several long-lived friends, suffers boredom and loneliness, and struggles against cynicism. The beauty of these novels is their portrayal of history without the rose-colored glasses present in most history books. Partially epistolary in form, these novels allow us to see history not through the rose-colored glasses of distance, but through the eyes of those living it as their present, and then supplies "commentary" in the form of Saint-Germain, whose 4,000 years of life have allowed him the time to develop modern sensibilities, as we see them. If you're looking for a horror story, you'll be disappointed; Saint-Germain is much more. If you expect institutions such as the Church and various historical figures to come out smelling like roses because the simplistic history you learned at school or even in your church suggests that it is so, you'll be disappointed as well. The reality and politics of the dark ages, say, or religion is often much nastier than we want to suppose, though it takes looking at primary sources--rather than TV and movies--to understand this. I am grateful that CQY does do this research, and then writes these novels, so the rest of us can see history--and humanity--with new eyes. A little fresh blood never hurt anybody, so to speak.

St. Germain - an acquired - ahem - taste ...
By Jacqueline
This is one of the most popular vampire series on the market - and it's very existence flies in the face of common editorial wisdom. I know because I've sold a number of novels, including a vampire romance coming out in 2003, Those of My Blood, and the vampire related novels of Sime Gen such as The Unity Trilogy ASIN 1592220037.
Most professional editors will tell you that if you want to sell a book to an editor, you can't mix your genres. And if the publisher has any hope of selling to a wide audience, you really really must never ever mix genres.
Well, The Chronicles of Saint-Germain are Vampire-Romance-Historical-Feminist psycho-drama, as Those of My Blood and Sime Gen are also mixed genre.
Yarbro has blended the twenty-first century's terse style with that antique style of words for their own sake, images described for 10 pages in paragraphs two pages long, words and words and words that just ripple across the senses for the sake of evocation of strange places in the minds of those who have never been 20 miles from their birthplace and never met anyone they haven't known all their lives. Yarbro evokes that wordy style without a spare word anywhere.
Relying on the reader's modern experience, Yarbro transports us to "there and then" by capturing the attitudes and ideas, the viewpoints of those who lived in such a world.
These novels have no action. Even when the characters are running for their lives, there's nothing resembling the kind of "action" you see on tv or in films.
But you know what? That's exactly why I love them! How refreshing! A real, complex, deep, rich story told without depending on fight scenes the way "Walker, Texas Ranger" does. Yarbro uses plenty of danger, threats that materialize, angst, and conflict to give us insights into how our culture has become what it is today.
I've done a long review of Night Blooming in my review column focusing on how perfectly the story of Gynethe Mehaut, a woman who is a totally passive victim of her life, time and circumstances reveals the full complexity of the definition of Enemy. She's an albino raised by Nuns, and has accepted a life of nothing but penitential prayer. Then the Church investigates why her hands bleed with stigmata reminiscent of Christ's wounds. She is sent from convent to convent and eventually to Charlemagne's court.
She has solid emotional defenses against the life she's caught in -- until Saint Germain introduces her to the delights of the body. At one point, he uses a length of silk to pleasure her -- and offers her entre into his "life." Shortly after that, she's tortured. It seemed to me that because he broke down her inner defenses, the torture was hundreds of times worse for her than it would have been.
For the torture scenes alone, Night Blooming is a stunning achievement of the writer's craft. But aside from that, the book reveals the full meaning of the casual references sprinkled in some of the other St. Germain novels about the time Saint Germain was at Charlemagne's court.
If this is your first Saint Germain novel, I don't think you'll be able to rest without reading the others. Like watching just one episode of Forever Knight - it leaves you tantalized by so many questions.
Live Long and Prosper,
Jacqueline Lichtenberg

The third book in the author's Cat series and the sequel to the national best-seller Catspaw follows the tough, half-human hero as he travels to Refuge, where strange life forms face an ecological disaster.

From Publishers Weekly
Half human, half Hydran, Vinge's young protagonist, Cat, has always been an outcast in the world of the mid-21st century. In this richly detailed and suspenseful sequel to Catspaw (1989), Cat travels to the planet Refuge, home to the only surviving enclave of Hydrans, a once-powerful race of psions, or telepaths, whose nonviolent culture left them at the mercy of aggressive human expansion. As part of a research team sent to study the cloud-whales, aerial creatures whose lifecycle may hold the key to advances in nanotechnology, Cat also hopes to learn more about his alien heritage. When he inadvertently helps a young Hydran woman kidnap a human child, however, he is swept into a deadly conflict between the two races. Vinge deftly twists together multilayered plot strands as misguided loyalties and fanaticism, both human and Hydran, propel events toward inevitable disaster. Although the story loses momentum near the end, it deftly explores themes of family and loyalty. And, as always, Cat proves a sensitive and engagingly stubborn narrator. Author tour.

From Kirkus Reviews
Another yarn featuring the half-human, half-Hydran, sometimes telepathic, always abused Cat (Catspaw, 1988, etc.). This time, on planet Refuge, Cat's employed by Tau Biotech to help plumb the secrets of the cloud-reefs, huge landforms composed of the solidified thoughts of the vast, enigmatic, floating, telepathic cloud-whales. But here, as everywhere, the psi-powered Hydrans are feared, hated, repressed, marginalized, and exploited. So when a human child is kidnapped by Hydran terrorists and held for ransom, Cat--he inadvertently helped the kidnapper--is immediately blamed by Tau's brutal police. Even when his innocence has been established, he's forced to act as a go-between--and the Hydrans mistrust Cat because his telepathy is blocked. Then Cat meets the kidnapper, the lovely Miya, and the two realize at once that they're destined soulmates. Unfortunately, Miya's sister Naoh, the chief terrorist, feels divinely inspired and intends to raise a planetary revolt. She's crazy, of course, and her plan would bring ruin to the Hydrans. Can Cat prevent a planetary disaster and hang on to Miya? The cloud-reef backdrop is spectacular but makes no sense. And despite Cat's streetwise upbringing, constantly alluded to, he hasn't learned anything useful, so his chronic suffering soon becomes tiresome. An overlong and mediocre addition to the series. I'm totally bummed
By jessica j
As far as I know, this is the last book Ms. Vinge wrote about Cat, and I think that's a damn shame. This book does not do him justice. I think Catspaw is one of the best books I ever read about sci-fi psychics, but this book was pale in comparison.

The first problem is the girls. Kissindre and Miya aren't half as interesting as the symbplayer and Elanor taMing (sic). Even Jule had more spunk than Miya, and every time Kiss shows up, I keep thinking, Aren't you the dull student from Catspaw? The answer is yes.

Also, because Cat is so enamoured of Miya, he spends a large chunk of the book being bubbly and happy. That's no fun! Cat is best as a snarky, cynical freak, and I'm not interested in listening to him go on about his 'one true love.' He makes up for this with much suffering towards the end, but still, this section is painful.

The most disappointing thing about this book is that the ending is not a great ending for the trilogy. His life is still up in the air, and he doesn't really grow in his power at all, if you know what I mean.

If you're like me, you pretty much have to read this book if you read Catspaw. Just don't get your hopes up too high. This book does nothing to diminish my very high opinion of Ms. Vinge as a writer (read my other reviews) but I think this is her slightest work.

If anyone's interested, I found Joan's homepage. Looks like it might be kinda old, but still authentic:

A worthy sucessor -- with a blundered finish.
By B. J. West
For 90% of the book, "Dreamfall" is every bit as good as "Psion", moments are as good as "Catspaw". Then, in the last chapter, she blows her dismount and landing very, very badly. It's almost like she hit a time or length limit and said "and now, it's over", tying up the remaining loose ends with a couple of totally unbelievable ham-fisted gestures. Ms. Vinge then has Cat surrender to authority and walk away from everything he loves without a fight (completely out of character), presumably to rid him of complications that might hinder future sequels. It really pissed me off, because I had really been enjoying it until then.

_Dreamfall_ is a must-read!
By A Customer
Well, she's done it again! Joan Vinge, author of the first two Cat novels, Psion & Catspaw, has produced another gripping, heart-felt masterpiece. Cat once again finds himself the pawn of an ultra-powerful corporate-state. However, _Dreamfall_ delves more into psycho-social emotional issues, dealing with Cat's heritage as a hydran/human halfbreed, how this effects his life and his views, and the psychological and emotional damage he lives with due to the loss of his psi (read _Psion_ for more details), and the consequences of using drugs to reactivate it. Here, Cat comes to a point of self-realization, of having to decide what he believes and how he wants to live his life--as a human, or a hydran? Eventually, he realizes that both have their good points, and perhaps he should accept the gifts of each. And of course, *he falls in love*. _Dreamfall_ yet again (as with the previous Cat novels) leads the reader to ponder the nature of his or her own values and world view. This is a truly beautiful, moving novel, and I've come to expect no less from this very talented woman.

Mike's Election Guide 2008, by Michael Moore

In his first book in five years, Michael Moore brings us the definitive guide to the 2008 election.

After a diastrous war, the failure to catch bin Laden, millions of families who have lost their homes, the Katrina debacle, soaring gas prices feeding record oil company profits, and the largest national debt caused by the biggest spending and borrowing administration in American history, the country has had it with conservatives, right-wingers and Republicans. A thrilling election season is now upon us. Obama vs. McCain. One candidate has promised a presidency different from any other, one that will take us forward to embrace the hope of the 21st century. The other candidate says he has no idea how to use a computer.

Welcome to MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- Michael Moore's effort to make sense of the this fall's race for the White House and Congress. In it, Moore answers the nation's most pressing questions: "Why is John McCain so angry?," "Do the Democrats Still Drink from a Sippy Cup and Sleep with the Light On?," Can I get into the Electoral College with only a 2.0 gpa?" and "How many Democrats does it take to lose the most winnable election in American history?"

It's a great year to be an American and a voter. Don't miss out on all the fun! And don't miss out on MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- it's the indispensable book that belongs in every American's back pocket this season.

From Publishers Weekly
With his characteristically smug, sarcastic, nudge-and-wink style, Moore shows how Democrats can score a slam-dunk in November in a guidebook comprised of half-kidding essays, all within Moore's prescribed range: wry humor, pissed-off rants and sweeping generalizations. In Moore's book, Obama's victory is a more-or-less forgone conclusion; naturally, he offers Obama a list of 10 Presidential Decrees for his First Ten Days (bring back the draft, but just for rich kids; ban high fructose corn syrup; free HBO for everyone). His opening salvo, "Ask Mike," includes questions like "Why should I vote? It only encourages them," and explanations that include a possibly inflammatory take on McCain's stint in Vietnam as a pilot and prisoner of war; Moore points out that if McCain's military service is up for discussion, why won't anyone ask what McCain did to the Vietnamese? Sure to provoke, Moore covers his back with a bibliography and an index of sound bites his right-wing opponents can attack him with ("Long live Chairman Mao!"). Readers will get what they expect; Moore's guide probably won't change any minds, but it's an entertaining, occasionally thought-provoking take on this year's big event.

Review
Read by Moore with his trademark sardonic sense of humor, the book is less a guide to the election than it is a manual that analyzes the list of mistakes the right wing has made in the last eight years. Moore is always good at looking at both sides of the story with raw honesty, and this book is no different. He gives listeners plenty of reasons to vote for Obama, but more prominently, a plethora of reasons not to vote for another four (or eight) years of a Republican administration. Ultimately, Moore offers an entertaining reading that will keep listeners engaged. (Audiofile 2008)

The book is amusing enough, and it does have a lot of facts, but I just wasn't thrilled with it. I adore my friend Michael, but I was a little disappointed,

Is it Saint Michael or Saint George against the dragon?
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
A little book that has to be read in three hours at the most and on the outside. Pungent with hot language, fragrant with nice flower names for disgusting stinking old bald politicians, packed with a few truths and many truths and a half. This book is brilliant and it is already three months old, June 2008. Of course he could not envisage the time when the George of the White House was going to nationalize the American banking system. He could not imagine either that China was going to buy Rothschild and the Japanese another New York bankrupted bank, but the Federal Government - what does he say the McCain about less government? - buying out the failed banking system in its nearly total globality, that was unimaginable even to the most hazardous minds just two weeks ago. But George did it. A real George as the French used to say before they started to call those people who are slightly mentally impaired cakes and then some other bird names. But the Guide is still valid. Valid about the failed American electoral system that is absolutely not democratic since it can declare elected someone who has not been elected, and even decide that millions of ballots can be nullified by a Supreme Court decision. Right he is that the Democratic party is not very swift when it comes to winning elections. They must be forced to win, forced by fate, forced by the three weird sisters beyond there who spin, measure and cut the thread of our life. A whole legion of walkyries are necessary to chase the Democratic Party into winning an election? It is so much more comfortable to lose and be an eternal opposition. Yet there is a fair chance that Obama will win, that the two houses of Congress will have a comfortable and reinforced democratic majority, and it is even possible that they get the famous three fifth majority so much needed for all constitutional amendments and overruling the President's veto. And yet they may lose the Presidential election if they do not react fast and fight with more pugnacity the opponent, in fact the opponents because the Republican party decided to have two horses harnessed to the single cart of the presidential ticket, two horses if we want, because it is a way of speaking since one is an old nag and the other is a zebra of a potentially convicted power abuser. But the system being what it is Obama will only win if he is able to bring five to ten million new voters into the game, the battle, the fight, the final guerilla warfare confrontation and conflagration. So you better hurry up and volunteer. The first ten reforms of the first ten days of this reformistic presidency are funny for some, evident for others and always full of sense, if not always of common sense. He is not always well informed, for example about the French social system or health care system. It's true he apparently got his information from the French embassy. He might have been better inspired to ask someone who really knows, not an ambassador who has never had any real problem with anything in his life. Hardships are a lot better as a school than the silver spoon you are born with in your mouth in the big diplomatic families of the French republic. But the best part is his suggestion to get all the corpses and bandits occupying the White House out of it in a perpetrator walk excellent. That's all they deserve and I think that perpetrator walk should be advertised so that as many discontented people could come with rotten eggs and over-ripe tomatoes to adorn their faces qui red and yellow and white, the tricolor flag of yellow bellies, liars, thieves and other perambulating dead people we have forgotten to bury. Please catch up on that urgent task and make them walk an infinite line between two rows of angry citizens. Don't kill them please, just shame them for life and make sure everyday they will be reminded with their lies, thefts, crimes, murders, etc. Rush to this little book and read it before the night is out.

From Kirkus Reviews
The complex topic of attachment theory is opened up to parents, as well as other interested adults, by putting issues of child development, usually couched in antiseptic academic parlance, in lay terms. Ranging through historical developments in the field, Karen, formerly a psychotherapist in the pediatric unit of Bellevue Hospital, attempts to demystify ``mother love,'' or the bond babies have with their primary caregiver (Karen is also concerned with what happens to babies when that bond is disrupted). The author introduces and defends the English researcher John Bowlby, whose intuitions in the late 1930's about ``maternal attachment'' would be borne out not by his research but by that of Mary Ainsworth decades later. It may be historians and would-be child psychologists to whom this book matters most, for the delineation of who contributed what to the field, and when, puts both attachment theory and psychoanalytic theory into a context of early speculations, later advances, due championing, and (some) tarnishment. Amid occasionally florid prose, and with a tendency to characterize figures as either brilliant or great, Karen delves into what theorists have believed to be children's earliest feelings of rage and helplessness, love and security. Wittily titled chapters with effective cliffhanger endings will carry readers along on the tide of discovery and naysaying, furious debate, and placid acceptance of what these days is considered universally scandalous treatment of children (from abandonment of orphans to the analysis by her father of Anna Freud). Karen's work makes clear that, regardless of the path of scientific thought, there are newly minted, common-sense reasons for giving offspring all the love and respect we can. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Totally Different Perspective
By M. Corrigan
This review probably won't do this book justice. I'm analytical, Master's Degree in Statistics kind of guy, yea, stoic. Psychology. Yea that stuff is for quacks. In graduate school I worked with enough of them trying to squeeze any interpretation out of their "data".

So I have one of those life altering experiences. I go to Iraq as a reservist, spend sixteen months away from my wife and job, come back to a wife that doesn't love me anymore and doesn't know if she can. PTSD, Generalized Anxiety, and Depression all in one. But other than the PTSD symptoms, all of the other things have constantly been in my life working mysteriously in the background.

I go to a shrink as my marriage has fallen apart and I have no one to talk to and she brings up Attachment. I have never heard of it, so the scientist in me wants to learn anything and everything before our next meeting. I next day this book and begin reading "my life away" online and in the book. Or more apropriately "reading my life back." I'm fitting into this mold that is everything I don't want to be, but am and jealous of the mold that is everything that I am not, I'm being divorced by a woman that has been hardening my mold for the last 5 years. This book altered my perspective on so many things. I identified with so many others. It gave me a framework and definitions for defense mechanisims like (passive agressiveness and sublimation), a way to look at my childhood, and although the odds are against me being Ambivalently Attached and seeking Secure Attachment, I can now somewhat accurately "self-reflect" on my life experiences.

I won't lie, reading the history was kind of drab (I read math books for a living that isn't much more exciting), but I can't say pick up this book and start with chapter 7 or something like that. The history gives you a working perspective, something like "at least that didn't happen to me" but then it starts to come into more practicable situations and you start to piece how you fit into the reading. Taking and owning what is yours and totally psychoanalyzing your friends and in my case the divorcing spouse.

The chapter that "WOW"d me the most was Chapter 26 Repetition and Change: Working Through Insecure Attachment. After I was able to piece the picture together of my life and what extent of the symptoms and other things in my life that have related to the entire book thus far. This chapter has given me some hope. Some hope of finding out who I really am and exploring my sloshing bucket of memories for what decisions I have made and what decisions I am making by trying X+Y=Z over and over again instead of tring something like B/Q=A.

This review still does not do this book justice, but I'll put it out there, but it is what it is. If you don't believe in psychobabble and are a hard "nut" to crack, read this book! I have looked down at psycholgists most of my life, like they settled on an "Easier" career because they weren't good enough for a "Real" one. Well I can honestly admit and apologize to any that I may have convinced, that I could not have been more from the truth.

I'm not going to switch careers or anything, but I now have a reference in wich to self reflect and "get a grip!"

Excellent history and explanation of attachment theory
By Amazon Customer
Extremely well-written book in that it is easily understood by the lay person, yet gracefully expresses complex ideas and processes, and is such a complete overview of attachment theory as to be of as much use to the professional as the lay person.
Attachment theory addresses child development in terms of whether or not there is a loving attachment to a parental figure. Through following the history of the development of attachment theory the author explains the theory, the evidence supporting it, and the effects upon the individual.
While supportive of attachment theory, Karen is careful to explain the views of its critics, and to show how those criticisms often improved the theory.
I am not a psychologist, but someone with Borderline Personality Disorder trying to make sense of my life in order to improve it. Karen's work helped me enormously. His scientific orientation to provide good theory grounded in reseach and evidence is fused with his warm humanity and concern for individuals and society.
Therefore I recommend the book to professional psychologists, teachers, makers of public policy, and others who deal with children. But also I recommend it highly to those on the quest for self-understanding.

Required reading for anyone who works with children.
By Rocco B. Rubino
The struggle to understand the parent-child bond touches us deeply because we intuitively sense that our first relationships hold many clues to how we've become who we are (Karen, 1994). I chose to do a report on this book because of the keen interest I have in children, their development, well-being and emotional life.
Dr. Karen's book is a goldmine of insight, posing the age-old question ; How do we become who we are? Central to the answer is attachment theory, which, in the words of Dr. Karen, 'encompasses both the quality and strength of the parent-child bond, the ways in which it forms and develops, how it can be damaged and repaired, and the long-term impact of separations, losses, wounds, and deprivations. Beyond that, it is a theory of love and its central place in human life' ...
I feel that I came across this book serendipitously as Dr. Karen's work has further added to my knowledge base, and my understanding by confirming opinions I have developed by watching people interact with children. After reading this book you will find yourself noticing certain behaviors on display that may have previously escaped your gaze. I can't stress how much this book as helped me as a special ed. teacher, parent, and as a counseling practitioner-to-be.
I earnestly hope that I have the opportunity to share these insights with teachers, administrators, parents, and especially children as my career progresses.
