Just needed a little more....something (and SPOILER ALERT!)

WARNING: FULL OF SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, lemme get this straight. Sir Alistair is a scarred recluse, hiding from the world in his family's filthy castle, interacting with as few people as possible. Then, like a present left under his tree by Santa, comes a beautiful woman fleeing from her emotionally abusive and controlling lover. Sent by a friend to be Sir Alistair's housekeeper, Helen literally drops into the man's lap.

Before you can say "facial disfigurement", Helen is sprawled naked over his desk like a teenager's homework, giving him the first sex he's had since before he lost half his face to a vengeful Indian tribe. He has been cringing from the the gaze of the world, only venturing out when he has to, yet we're supposed to believe that all of a sudden he's going to be flirting and pursuing this gorgeous woman? I'm not saying a man like him wouldn't be attractive to me, or probably 90% of the thinking female world. But this book makes him sad and lonely, hating the world and hiding from it. All of a sudden he's found the confidence to pursue this babe in a fairly short time, despite the fact that the only sexual pleasure he's had in years is from himself?

Ok, they find a lovely little world of hot sex and mutual passion, so what does he do when he finds out the truth about Helen's life? He rises to the occasion once again in more than the physical sense, but not before he chastises her for getting pregnant out of wedlock twice AND calls her a whore. More than once. Not just a whore, but a common whore. Let me remind you that this is supposedly a man who makes women scream with horror when they take a gander at his face. Let me also remind you that this is a guy who took at stab at having a "common whore" and she wouldn't even lie down for him without more money. Helen has spent several weeks lying down, sitting down, standing up, kneeling down for him, of her own free will, because she finds him sexy and attractive...and he repays her that way. Most women would have slapped the eyepatch right off his face and found someone else to help her out of her dilemma. But sweet Helen forgives him, and even loves him.

He (occasionally) gives a thought to her beauty, his ugliness, and how it will feel to face the inevitable moment when she smacks herself on the forehead and says, "Good God, are you ugly!" But he never speaks to her about his fears, using their time together merely to nail her in a number of innovative ways that, to me, show a higher degree of confidence than you'd think from the theme of the book. And she never explains to him that, ok, a small part of his overall looks are slightly awry, but he more than makes up for some scars and missing body parts with his phenomenal brain, incredible talent, bulging wallet, gorgeous hair, fabulous body and highly glorious manhood. To read this book, you kind of wonder why he didn't just slap a bag over his head and wander the streets of Edinburgh naked as a jaybird--he'd have had a woman in 20 minutes.

And when she tells him she loves him, words that the average scarred, misanthropic recluse (his words) would love to hear, does he tell her his fears? No, he just lies there like a lump, letting her walk out of his life. (Granted, after that degree of hot sex, maybe he was merely asleep, like a normal man would be). It takes his sister showing up to smack some sense into him. Now, this is the sister he hadn't seen for a number of years, remember? But all of a sudden, when he has a woman, she is regularly riding in to save the day.

This was a really good book, and I enjoyed it for the most part. I've only just discovered Hoyt's books and they really are a cut above the average sensual romance. But I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if his behavior bore out the emotionally damaged guy he was being portrayed as, and if they had shared their weaknesses and needs as much as they shared their lust-engorged body parts. Then I would have felt that this book was as perfect as it could have been.

a fairy tale of the best kind.

This book had me laughing, crying, flying through the pages, and left me with that warm and fuzzy feeling only a truly great romance story can.

Our heroine is fleeing London (an escaping mistress) with her 2 children and goes to a filthy castle in Scotland where she meets the tall, well built, but scarred (inside and out) 1 eyed hero.

The bits of fairy tale that start each chapter, the tension of the children's father hunting them down because they are his (as is she, his former mistress he won't let go), the 'beast' coming back to life after so many years shut away in solitude...

just holy wow and fantastic reading all around. The romance has time to build into lust and then love, the children and supporting characters are charming, and the pace is great. Elizabeth Hoyt has a way with story telling and words that had me flying through each page. I'm not a big historical fan, but I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

Well crafted historical romance

I never seem to tire of the old Beauty and the Beast plot lines. I'm not sure why, but I find it--and the Ugly Duckling stories-- to be redeeming in some way. Perhaps it is my innate distaste for the way modern society focuses on appearance, but I really enjoy it when one--or both--characters don't follow the 'they're so beautiful' mold.

This is the first book by Elizabeth Hoyt that I have read, and I must say I wasn't disappointed. She has a fresh approach to historical romance and her characters are well developed--from the servants to the heroes. Every single one of them is memorable.

I particularly enjoyed the fact that the heroine was a 'fallen' woman who didn't fit the 'perfect' heroine mold either.

To Beguile a Beast was a very satisfying book with an even more satisfying theme.

I'm reading the Cadfael chronicles in order. Our county library did not have this one, so I bought it. Having finished it yesterday, I'll now donate it to the library. The BBC productions of Cadfael are good, but the books contain much more detail. Each one is delightful.

Compassionate, vulnerable, and surprisingly likable, protagonist Portia Nathan struck a chord with critics, who described her as “wonderfully complex” (Los Angeles Times) and “utterly real” (Entertainment Weekly). Korelitz, a Dartmouth graduate and former Princeton admissions reader, offers a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the college admission process. Critics were split, however, on whether parents with teens should seek out this title. On the one hand, Admission is a helpful guide for parents and students interested in learning about admission etiquette. On the other, the novel may strike terror in the hearts of parents with Ivy League hopes and bright, but unexceptional, children.

"Admission" is a novel that examines the complex process of selecting incoming freshmen for Princeton University from a large pool of eager and often superbly qualified applicants. Jean Hanff Korelitz draws on her experience as an "outside reader" for Princeton to add verisimilitude to her story. She also spoke with deans of admissions and college counselors to gain a broad perspective on what has become, for many, a harrowing and competitive race to the finish line. The protagonist is thirty-eight year old Portia Nathan, who has been a reader in Princeton's Office of Admission for the past decade. She is passionate about her work, identifying with the "kids" whose orange application folders contain a mini-portrait of their backgrounds, accomplishments, and ambitions. It is part of her job to visit feeder schools and deliver a sales pitch to encourage high school juniors and seniors to consider Princeton. Sometimes she manages to recruit a gem during her travels, such as "the Inuit girl from Sitka, Alaska, who'd won Princeton's sole Rhodes scholarship last year."

Unfortunately, Portia is in a rut. She has been living with an English professor for sixteen years, and they have little of substance to say to one another these days. She has few friends and little contact with her sixty-eight year old mother, Susannah, a gregarious do-gooder who spends much of her time volunteering for a host of worthy causes. Unexpectedly, during her visit to the Quest School (whose mission is "to open doors, not close them") in rural New Hampshire, Portia meets a warm and compassionate teacher named John Halsey who remembers her from their days at Dartmouth, as well as Jeremiah Balakian, a seventeen-year-old autodidact who has terrible grades but is a zealous and voracious reader. These encounters will shake up Portia's life in ways that she could never have foreseen.

Korelitz is a fluid writer who provides a minutely detailed view of the whole admissions ordeal--especially what it costs parents and their children in angst, expense, and emotional upheaval. One clever and original touch is the inclusion of an excerpt from a typical college application essay before each chapter. Some of these are cloying, others smack of desperation, and a few are poignant and even profound. The essays convey more about admissions than the author's encyclopedic explanation of every aspect of this incredibly complicated rite of passage.

Although Portia is a likeable and engaging character with enough wit and charm to make us care about her, she cannot carry the book by herself. What eventually sinks "Admission," besides its excessive length, are its one-dimensional secondary characters and its regrettable descent into soap opera. The author expects us to buy two incredible coincidences that induce Portia to take a hard look at the bad decisions she has made. As Portia clumsily deals with the fallout from her mistakes, Korelitz wraps things up disappointingly with a trite and predictable conclusion. The title, "Admission," has a double meaning, referring not only to the college admission process, but also to the importance of admitting painful truths to oneself and our loved ones before it is too late to make things right. It is too bad that Korelitz relies on clichés and heavy-handed plot elements. These keep what could have been a sharp and timely work of contemporary fiction from realizing its full potential.

Fascinating read

I try to avoid spoilers but several people have complained that this review contains them. Of course, those people haven't read the book so they don't know that the movie trailer contains more spoilers than this review does.

Portia Nathan is an admissions officer at Princeton University who is assigned to the Northeast. Her duties include traveling to schools in her area to give presentations on Princeton to high school seniors. On her visit to one school, she encounters a man who remembers her from their days at Dartmouth. She doesn't remember him, but she ends up sleeping with him that evening. Portia's not sure why she did this because she's content enough in her domestic life - she's been living with her longtime boyfriend, Mark, an English professor at Princeton.

As she and Mark are traveling to see Portia's mother for the holidays, Mark tells her that he can't go on and she discovers that he has been having an affair and his other girlfriend is pregnant. He returns to Princeton and Portia continues on to her mother's alone. Upon arrival, Portia finds that her mother has taken in a pregnant seventeen year old and intends to help her raise the baby. All of this news throws Portia into a deep depression that leaves her barely able to function. Things from her past come back to haunt her and she has to deal with a secret from long ago that she'd like to forget.

Because Portia is such an aloof character, I found Admission, by Jean Hanff Korelitz a little slow at the beginning, but once I got into it, I didn't want to put it down. I found the details of the admission process at Ivy League colleges fascinating and found myself thankful that I went to college before U. S. News & World Report started their college rankings. I found that Portia was much more complex than she seemed on the surface and I just had to know what her secret was. Portia's mother, Susannah, was a free-spirit and I enjoyed reading about her. Susannah's the type of woman I admire and love to talk to, but frankly, I'm glad my mother's not like her. Overall, I thought this character driven book was great.

I don't know why some books get published.

Maybe I've gotten spoiled on the crazy idea that novels should have a point, or at least be interesting, because Admissions scrapes by indifferently on both counts. It escapes me how a fiction novel passed by with so many unending, droning tangents about the literal admissions process and why the author (and editor and publisher) thought that anyone would care to read these meandering rants in repeated succession, but there you go. That's the book.

The protagonist is not particularly likable. She seems one of those dull women, in a dull unfullfilling relationship that you see from a distance and wonder why and how anyone would live like that. Well, that's one thing this novel did - explain how people can stand to lead stale, seemingly pointless lives where nothing ever happens, devoid of passions, devoid of excitement and meaning. Halfway through the book I realized literally two things had happened - she boned the guy from Quest and her long time partner got another woman pregnant and ran out on her. (The plot points tend to come out of nowhere, shortly after they are introduced, which is unsatisfying.) I'll repeat - Portia isn't a likable or sympathetic character, and there isn't really much need to empathize with her either. So what's the point? Portia's only passion in life is explaining - repeatedly, in unnecessary minute detail - that Ivy League schools take no joy in rejecting applicants and how guilty she is that people assume otherwise. Literally about 300 pages of the book are spent expounding that point.

I knew I wasn't going to end up anywhere meaningful when I felt no guilt at skipping pages in a novel I'd never read before. The second time Portia's mother Susannah and her ridiculous "tricking a teenager into keeping an unwanted baby" storyline popped up (embarrassingly an unabashed plot device to link back to Portia's own unwanted pregnancy) I didn't even pretend to care about this even less likable character or plotline. I skipped pages with aplomb! I knew I wasn't going to miss anything important or relevant. (How could I? The whole novel itself was seeming unimportant and irrelevant.)

I am going to spoil this book for you because a third of the way through you realize Portia has had an unwanted pregnancy, and the circumstances of that pregnancy are not explained until the point where in any other novel, you'd be at the falling action succeeding the climax. As it became increasingly clear where the novel was going, I lost interest in it and tried to find a spoiler online to avoid actually having to read it, but there wasn't one. So for those in a similar predicament - and for those who should know that this novel really isn't worth reading as it doesn't impart any wisdom, entertainment, or indeed lasting impression at all - I will spoil the ending now. SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER. This is the plot - minus about 40,000 words on why admission to Ivy League universities is SO GREAT and SO TERRIBLE.

Portia goes on a recruitment trip and has a one night stand with an old classmate from Dartmouth. Portia's partner of 16 years leaves her for a colleague he knocked up. Portia has a deep dark secret. It's that she got knocked up when she was 20 and gave the kid up for adoption. It turns out Portia's son is the brilliant weird kid she met on the trip. She denies a kid who was admitted in order to give the spot to her son. Admission, you get it? Redemption! She gets fired. She ends up with the one night stand. The end.

You know what bothered me most about this book? Other than the 12 hours I'll never get back? Was that for some reason at the end of the book there's this incredibly self indulgent, arrogant Ask the Author section about why she wrote the book and a "group reading guide" (I assume with the laughably optimistic assumption that one day this book with be required reading for some poor schoolchildren) with about 15 discussion questions. Lol, what nerve.

What separates Sosa from the mainstream of sports star bios is the likability and exuberance of the subject and the form in which it was written. Cast as an oral history, Sosa lets Sammy's voice--as well as those of his family, friends, and some important coaches--come through, and juxtaposed voices can make for some interesting observations.

Sosa, of course, needs no introduction. Born in poverty in the Dominican baseball incubator of San Pedro de Macoris, he seemed destined to be just another good, solid journeyman ballplayer, a guy who could post eye-catching numbers and not hurt you too much in the field. Then came the miracles of 1998 and '99, back-to-back seasons of 66 and 63 taters with 158 and 143 RBIs, an MVP award, and the affection of fans everywhere. What happened?

Sosa works best as it answers that, creating almost a dialogue between Sosa and Jeff Pentland, whom the Cubs elevated to Major League hitting coach midway through Sammy's and the team's disappointing 1997. Pentland took a hard look at Sosa and saw the untapped talent. "The two things that really stood out were his attitude and his aggressiveness," he says. "I've always felt as a coach the more aggressive the player is, the better, because it's your job as a teacher to harness that aggression to where it's productive. At that point, Sammy was aggressive, but wildly aggressive." From there on, it's pretty much Sosa and Pentland, and through their exchanges we can see how and why the new hitter in Sammy emerges. It's good baseball analysis--technical, anecdotal, and brimming with the excitement and pride of Sammy's remarkable achievements. When Sosa tries to pull biographical heartstrings, it's soppy and sentimental; when it sticks to baseball, it's as crisp as the crack of the bat. --Jeff Silverman

SOSA IS A BOOK ABOUT ONE OF GREATEST THE RAGS TO RICHES STORIES IN RECENT YEARS. SAMMY DOES A GOOD JOB TELLING OF HIS LIFE IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AS A CHILD AND TEENAGER. HE THEN GETS INTO HIS TREMENDOUS RISE TO ONE OF THE MOST FEARED SLUGGERS IN THE GAME TODAY. I ADMIRE HIS MODESTY, VALUES, CONFIDENCE, AND INNOCENCE. HIS LOVE FOR HIS MOTHER IS TRULY ADMIRABLE. SAMMY IS TRULY A GOOD PERSON AND A GREAT PLAYER. SAMMY HAS MANY VALUES AND BELIEFS THAT ARE TRULY NEEDED BY MOST OF TODAYS ATHLETES. SAMMY IS TRULY A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN HIS ENTHUSIASM AND LOVE OF THE GAME. THE BOY IN SAMMY IS ALIVE AND KICKING. I ADMIRE SAMMY A LOT MORE NOW THAT I HAVE READ THIS BOOK. Great player, so-so storyteller

A quick and pleasant read (REAL quick if you skip the stats that comprise about thirty percent of the text). Autobiographies seem to fall into three categories: (1) "tell it all before someone else tells on you" (Billie Holiday's LADY SINGS THE BLUES), (2) "getting even with one's enemies" (Nancy Reagan's MY TURN), and (3) "Gee, I can't believe people pay me to do what I love" (Xaviera Hollander's THE HAPPY HOOKER).
Cynically, you could say there's a fourth category--the market-driven, "strike while the iron is hot" autobiography. Sosa's book probably falls into this last category, though it is presented as a "Gee, I can't believe it" type (but with touches of the defensiveness found in "getting even" types of autobiographies). Hispanic journalist Breton had done a good job of interviewing people in Sosa's life and arranging testimonials in a way that keeps Sosa's story moving. Baseball fans will probably enjoy reading what Sosa has to say about how he improved his batting technique, how he handled the disappointment of being sent back to the minor league, how he viewed his home-run competition with Mark McGwire in 1998. Young people looking for a sports hero will benefit from what Sosa ("Mikey" to his friends and family) has to say about loyalty to family, remembering where one comes from, learning from ones mistakes, handling gossipers and nay-sayers, believing in oneself, and giving back to one's community. People looking for a profound psychological portrait of the author or an insightful take on the business and game of baseball will be disappointed. While no-one would expect someone as guileless as Sosa to trash his teammates and fellow ballplayers, the book could have used a few more clubhouse anecdotes.

Sammy Sosa is arguably the greatest Latino player in major league baseball. His magnificent 1998 home run race with Mark McGwire captivated the nation. Afterwards he was invited to the White House and made a special Ambassador to his native country, the Dominican Republic. However, what few people know is how hard Sammy Sosa worked to reach stardom.
"Sosa an Autogiography," is a special story. In fact, it is inspiring. Sammy Sosa grew up poor. He was skinny and initially wanted to be a boxer. However, his talent for baseball came out from urging of his older brother and the support of his devoted mother.
Co-author Marcos Bretón details the early years of Sosa's early major league career in Texas and then with the Chicago White Sox. It was a difficult time for Sosa, going up and down from the major and minor leagues. Nevertheless, Sosa worked hard and never lost hope. The trade to the Cubs and his rise to stardom was the result of a strong dedication to excellence.
Perhaps, the greatest part of this book is Sosa's loyalty to his family, the people of the Dominican Republic, and the fans of the Chicago Cubs. Although Sosa has reached great heights he still wants the fame that is associated with winning the World Series. This is a great book for kids and adults alike...the bottom line is "hard work works."

Marriage and Murder in Colorado

Reading "Valley of Ashes" is a commitment to going for a wondrous ride through the mind of a remarkable, vulnerable, honest, bright woman as she struggles with her marriage, raising twins, writing reviews of restaurants-hilarious meals involved, and keeping her house clean. She is funny, sad, hurting and smart, a loving mother, and a wonderful narrator of the ambivalences about a husband who is absolutely oblivious to her needs-and those of his kids. The mysteries in this book matter with a very sober look at arson, but Madeleine's frame of mind is the star of this book. Ms. Read has portrayed with brutal honesty, the self doubt of a woman who welcomes help as much as she feels guilty for needing it. I laughed as she described the antics of her girls as they paint with cheese nips and various other food stuffs. I was carried along by Maddy's pain as she see how vulnerable she is as a mother whose life is simply not perfect. I read this book in one sitting because I simply could not put it down. It resonates with me still, and will continue to do so. Ms. Read has taken a huge risk in presenting this very personal look at a flawed and very appealing heroine.

brutal honesty, exquisite talent

I read Ms. Read's first three books in great, gleeful gulps, feeling an intense relief that there are, indeed, people who talk and think like I do! People who are sarcastic and sensitive and whose depth of caring can make them constantly edging toward furious. Aside from the beautifully crafted plots, believable characters and sharp, unrelenting wit AT ALL TIMES, Ms. Read's books seem to arrow into chinks in the readers' armor and force us to look at things we'd sometimes rather not see.
But in "Valley of Ashes" this astonishing gift of piercing truth is taken to a whole new level. The story is still excellent, the clever commentary flows, but there is an unflinching honesty here that really packs a wallop. I read the entire book last night, and I still feel hurt and sore inside, like I had my first workout with a brutal new physical trainer. So much of what Ms. Read wrote sounds like direct quotes from my own past, and the lives of my close friends - the parts we don't really know how to talk about. The way a woman can look at her partner and feel rage and hurt, and then twenty seconds later, look at the same man and feel such tenderness and hope, as if the things that broke her heart earlier were somehow her imagination. The way a parent is irrevocably changed the minute their child is born, and how that level of vulnerability feels, like an exposed nerve in a bad tooth, sending appalling shocks throughout the system.
I feel similarly, I suppose, about Cornelia Read's books, as I do about Joni Mitchell's music. Brutal honesty conveyed with such clear, exquisite talent must move and change me, and when someone else doesn't understand or appreciate that talent, is not moved or changed by it, I have to think they're just blind.

Cornelia Read dips her pen in her own heart's blood as she writes

First Line: When we first moved to Boulder, I was entirely too happy-- a state of being so rare in my experience that I found it rather terrifying.

Madeline's husband Dean found a job in Boulder, Colorado, and while he spends a lot of his time on the road as a salesman, Madeline is a stay-at-home mother of two toddler twin girls, India and Parrish. Her world couldn't be any more different from the life she knew in New York City.

At first Madeline is ecstatically happy, but as exhaustion wears her down, she becomes dissatisfied. Her world has shrunk to an endless round of taking care of two demanding babies, a house that is never clean, and a husband who, when he is home, is more and more critical of her.

When her mother and her friends tell her that she needs to do something outside the house just for her, she manages to get a job writing restaurant reviews for a local newspaper. The editor loves her writing and asks her to attend a neighborhood meeting in which fire department officials will advise residents on how to defend themselves against an arsonist who's been torching buildings in the area. The subject fascinates her, and Madeline becomes friends with one of the arson investigators. She even begins to do a bit of investigating on her own, but when the fires turn deadly and the stakes disastrously personal, Madeline finds that she needs every atom of courage she possesses to keep those whom she loves safe from harm.

When someone asks me to list my favorite writers of any genre, Cornelia Read is always in the top tier. Her creation, Madeline Dare, is the best blend of smart alecky, brave vulnerability that I've ever encountered. At first, I was hesitant with this book. Madeline as a mother? I chose not to procreate for a very good reason: I am not child friendly. Read made me forget all that as Madeline hauled her children all over town in a red wagon, as she fixed them broccoli, and made sure she packed the sippy cups and extra diapers. Madeline was a natural, and she made me forget that I'm not.

I cheered as she found the job at the newspaper so she could do something she liked to do that didn't involve babies... something that made her feel better about herself. She needed that because as the pages turned I had grave misgivings about the way her marriage was going, and so did her friends in Boulder.

The mystery concerning the arsonist is an intriguing one, but this book is about so much more than arson. It's about motherhood and marriage, it's about friendship and tragedy and grief. It's about standing up for yourself and those you love. There are many things in life that can turn to ash within the blink of an eye. As Madeline deals with all these issues, I was intensely emotionally involved. This sassy-mouthed woman with a big, big heart is one of the few fictional characters who can make me cheer, laugh, gasp, and cry within the space of a very few sentences.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that Cornelia Read dips her pen in her own heart's blood as she writes. This is beautifully written, emotional, soul-searing and laugh-out-loud funny fiction at its very best. It's anyone's guess as to whose soul is bared the most throughout the book, Madeline's or Cornelia's, and it really doesn't matter. What does matter is that I want more. Lots more.

Like so many rock stars who survive into their 40s, Mötley Crüe front man Neil has produced an autobiography. Raised in Compton, Calif., just as gangs were starting to take over, Neil turned multiracial good looks and a bad attitude into a career singing for the leading hair band of the 1980s. Mötley Crüe embraced the values of rock star excess and garnered fame as much for their drunken exploits as for their music. In one grim episode, an inebriated Neil crashed his Ford Pantera into a Volkswagen, killing his passenger and critically injuring two others. Interviews with friends, business associates, and ex-wives bring much-needed depth to the narrative. To his credit, Neil deals honestly with the suffering he's caused.

Disapointing book on one of rock's most excessive and abusing frontman

If you've read Motley Crue's 2001 book The Dirt, the content here may not seem all that different to you, and that's because it's not. Tattoos & Tequila is the autobiography of Motley Crue's Vince Neil, the book has new content that was not previously in The Dirt and it does go more into Vince's life and what it was like and he can certainly tell interesting stories. But a lot of it was already in The Dirt. Honestly, Tattoos & Tequila seems a bit of a cash-in, at this point there's already been The Dirt, Nikki released his book-journal, The Heroin Diaries, Tommy had Tommyland, maybe it was time for Vince to release a book. Unfortunately, it's not as good as either Nikki's or Tommy's book, it's badly written, and there are many errors (repeated sentence for one, not correctly spelling "girls" among others...), the book seems too rushed. Vince also released his new solo album Tattoos & Tequila in June so maybe they wanted to bring more cash in by writing a book, I don't know.

I feel genuinely sad for Vince, I love Motley Crue and he was a terrific singer but I certainly don't envy him. Neil got married quite a few times, had sex with a ton of women and truly lived the rock'n'roll lifestyle but he comes off as ungrateful and arrogant. In Vince's life there have been many divorces, the death of his daughter Skylar, he killed his buddy Razzle and severely injured two other people in a car accident, lawsuits, facelifts, band disputes, unsuccessful band and other struggles and interesting events. You'd think that Vince would have learned a lesson or two and try to live a more normal life and do something to help himself...but no, sadly he is still getting drunk and living the same way he lived all his life. The worst part is he probably doesn't even know it, or simply refuses to acknowledge it. At the same time there are some truths in T&T, Vince knows he's a singer for hire in Motley Crue these days and he tells the reader about it but there are other occasions where you would want more insight. For instance, he talks about Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy's wife, and says how evil he thinks he she is but doesn't tell us a whole lot of "why he hates her", he ends the part on Sharon by saying "Man, if only you knew...".

One of the book's most interesting moments comes when Nikki Sixx writes a page or two about Vince and Motley Crue. Sixx says that he feels sorry for Neil as he doesn't understand why Vince would be in a band with people he doesn't like and can barely tolerate, Nikki has kind words about Vince and considers him a friend and a big part of Motley Crue obviously. That right there should tell you something. I was surprised this part was even included in the book; but you can't help but be sorry for Vince as well.

In conclusion the book is poorly written and you don't gain any sort of respect for Vince Neil (in fact it might be the opposite) afterwards, Vince doesn't come off as someone who's learned anything from his mistakes or his life. If you're a fan of Motley Crue you might want to read Vince's autobiography and you have every right too, I too am a fan and wanted to read Tattoos and Tequila. A good co-author would've really helped Vince's book, he could have given Vince some good ideas on what the fans wanted to know or it could have an overal better and more organised book. Maybe I'd wait until the price comes down a little to buy it, 3 stars.

Vince's recall is not always the best, but what he can recall is a blast to read. Brutally honest about his band mates in Motley, and his ups and downs with them. More personal than in The Dirt.

Great Information, Poorly Co-Authored.

As a teenager, Vince Neil's face adorned just about every single inch of my room. At 35, while I may not have his posters up anymore, I still go to Crue concerts every chance I get with the zeal of a teenager. With that said, I was excited to learn more about Vince from his own words.

I wasn't disappointed in the content, per say, but the way it is written is horrendous and hideously unprofessional. In the beginning, when Vince is talking about growing up in Compton there's a section where he got knifed. Then he ate ice cream. And then somehow that turned into a crush on his teacher, and then there was an interjection out of nowhere from his mother about getting his girlfriend Tami pregnant. As a Vince fan, of course I knew about her and his son, but the book had not yet introduced her to us, and the part he was discussing before the mother's entry was from when he was 10-11 years old.

Then there's an interview with his sister, and his family apparently doesn't know if they're Spanish or Mexican but they're not Irish. What? Some of it was cool hearing about how they grew up together, but then she goes on to mention how she doesn't tell people who her brother is, except her business card mentions "Crue" at the bottom. After that she points out how she doesn't ask Vince for houses, or cars, or money, but if he wants to give them to her, that's cool. Really? Does that even need to be in the book? How is that even relevant? If anything, it makes Vince look like a cheapskate for not buying her houses/cars etc...

The word "Like" is used way too many times. "Like this one time we were like, over there in a yard, you know, next the blue house that was like kinda creepy?" My 8 year old can write a better sentence.

The book certainly gave me a different view of Vince, and unfortunately, not for the better. He's got the emotional depth of a pencil. When Razzle was killed in the accident, after they had just removed his friends bloody body off of him, his first thought was how destroyed his new car was. Wives are interchangeable. In fact, I'm surprised after number 2, any self respecting woman would even think of marrying him. The latest one, the one he calls his "partner", Lia, wife #4 - well, he just left her. You can even tell in the way he writes, even though they were together, he was pretty ambivalent about her.

There was some humor - the way he described Sharon Osbourne arriving on the 1984 tour gave me a vision of Ursula at the end of Little Mermaid. Giant, imposing, and scaring the crap out of everyone.

None of this is Vince's fault. He did what he was supposed to do. He gave the interviews, and told the tale, but the co-author failed miserably at his job. It's almost as though he plugged his voice recorder into a computer and had the computer type it up and, "Presto!" there's the book.

I wouldn't say, "Don't buy the book" because there really is quite a bit of interesting stuff, but buyer beware. You're going to want to rip your hair out when you see how poorly written it is.
