It's a two-for-one bonanza--two mystery novellas from a husband and wife whose separate writing careers have earned each a huge following. "Double Homicide: Boston," the strongest of the pair, is also the grittier of the two. A city college basketball star is shot at a nightclub following a nasty incident on the court. The prime suspect is a loudmouth on the opposing team, but as detectives McCain and Breton find out, the crime isn't as straightforward as it seems. The backdrop of "Double Homicide: Santa Fe" is a tad more refined--though murder, after all, is still murder. A cutthroat art dealer is found dead, and there are plenty of suspects in his address book--including the ex-wife of one of the investigating cops. In both stories, the cops' personal lives add welcome texture to the fairly routine if still wholly entertaining plots. Not Bad for Light, Fast Reading 3 1/2 stars

I did enjoy both novels, but I must admit that they are just good reads for a doctor's waiting room, an airplane, etc. I did like the Boston story a little better, primarily because I could identify with the female officer's concern for her children. She reminded me very much of Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson on Law & Order), and, in fact, I visualized her that way. The denouement was a surprise and yet it was not unfair in the least. The Santa Fe story turned me off a little because of Michael Weems' art. I cannot believe the choice of subjects. I wasn't as fond of the detectives in this story either. However, as I said, the books are fast reading and good for passing time when you're stuck waiting.

A Bit Thin for Hardcover

This was another Christmas present and as such, I enjoyed reading the two novellas done by the Kellermans. The book is easily read in a day. I started with the homicide set in Santa Fe and was finding it interesting until the end arrived. And that is about the way it happened. Not much explanation - some questions left hanging. I liked the relationship of the two police officers and their characters were well drawn. It was almost as though this was intended to be a full blown novel, but the author(s) ran out of steam and decided to pull the plug in the way that they did.

The Boston homicide story was clearly the better of the two, yet I thought that it also could have been drawn into a larger story if the authors had chosen to do so.

So, if you are looking for a couple of plesant little stories about homicide and have a plane ride to take or some time to curl up by the fire, I would suggest you wait for the paperback. It should be right along.

Interesting combination of husband and wife writers. Two who dunnits for the price of one. One set in Boston the other set in Santa Fe. One involving a basketball player who first is thought has having died from a gunshot but died from a medical condition. The second story is why did an art dealer die an who did it.

Review of the Unabridged Audio Book

The problem with audiobooks is that if there is a editing screw-up or a phrase that the author uses repeatedly it is more obviously on an audiobook. For instance that space down the middle of a multi-lane highway is a "median" not a "meridian". And by the time Baily had finished her interview I was very, very tired of hearing "I just have one more question". I was complaining about the "one more question" to a friend who said she did that when doing cross and recently the judge had looked at her sardonically and said "No you don't-- you have a lot more." Which is what I wanted to say to Bailey.

Anyway the audiobook was quite well read although the narrator was different from the first Bailey Weggans book I listened to a year ago.

These books are a guilty pleasure to me. The only glossy magazine I read on a regular basis is Vanity Fair-- for the crime stories, yah know. I don't think I've ever read a Cosmopolitan magazine. I'm nowhere near the demographic that I believe Bailey Weggans is geared to and I doubt if I have any idea what a pair of Blahniks would look like. In fact it is a lot like reading a fantasy novel where the author has to do world building-- a skill Kate White has, as she makes me believe that this is what a glossy, gossip magazine would be like under these circumstances.

A bully bites the dust.

Kate White's deliciously titillating new novel, "Over Her Dead Body," is about the murder of Mona Hodges, the dictatorial editor of "Buzz," a weekly celebrity gossip magazine. White's heroine, Bailey Weggins, has just joined the "Buzz" staff. Since her beat is celebrity crime, Bailey is assigned to cover this sensational story. Not content merely to report the facts, she decides to do some sleuthing on her own. Much to her chagrin, Bailey finds that the list of people who might have killed Mona could easily fill a small telephone book. Mona insulted almost everyone she knew, and many individuals would have profited from her death.

White is the editor in chief of "Cosmopolitan," and her insider's take on the celebrity gossip business is hilariously satirical. She depicts "Buzz" as a trashy publication whose writers cover such stories as the shocking secrets of the rich and famous, freaky beauty rituals, and the "binges, breakups, and botched plastic surgeries of the stars." The "Buzz" office is a very nasty place to work. It is filled with backstabbing employees who are eager to get ahead, even at one another's expense.

Who hated Mona Hodges? One of the victim's many enemies is a portly singer named Kimberly Chance, whom Mona dubbed "Fat Chance" in the pages of her magazine. Bailey's friend, Robby Hart, is also a prime suspect, since Mona unceremoniously fired him shortly before she was killed. Other people who may have resented Mona are a publicist named Kiki Bodden, Tom Dicker, the pompous owner of "Buzz," and Nash Nolan, the magazine's ambitious number two man. The possibilities are dizzying. When Bailey persists in her quest to find Mona's killer, she herself becomes a target for death.

White captures the breezy vernacular of the hip urban professional in her cute, but not cutesy, dialogue, and her characters are both varied and well-drawn. Bailey is savvy and sophisticated; yet, she displays a touching sweetness and vulnerability when an appealing new man named Beau Regan comes into her life. "Over Her Dead Body" is suspenseful, engrossing, and well-crafted, and I liked White's restrained and fairly realistic ending. Kate White tells it like it is; she describes the lurid world of gossip magazines with humor, style, and flair, and this mystery is an amusing and entertaining romp.

From the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine comes a deliciously gossipy story of the cutthroat world of gossip magazines. Bailet Weggins is a freelance crime journalist who switches from Gloss magazine when the editor wants to shift the focus of the magazine. Bailey lands a job at Buzz magazine with a notoriously difficult editor- Mona Hodges.

Six weeks into the gig, during a party at another magazine in the building, Mona is killed- brutally hit over the head, and barely alive when Bailey finds her. The only witness is a Russian cleaning woman. From there on, out, everyone in the office is a suspect, as it seems that everyone had a reason for wanting to kill Mona. There's a hot singer who has a major secret- could it have been the singer's handler? Was it the owner of Buzz magazine, who, upon learning that Mona was considering a job offer elsewhere, killed her?

Bailey becomes embroiled in the investigation when she is asked to write about the murder. A staff writer named Ryan is asked to write a profile about Mona- her life, work, etc. The competition gets fierce when Ryan thinks hes discovered a huge new lead- which ends in tragic circumstances. True to murder mystery form, Bailey finds her life "on the line" when she is attacked on a deserted street, and then locked in a sauna room at a Buzz staff picnic. A friend tells her at one point in the story about a optical confusion he once witnessed- and a similar kind of optical confusion occurs in this case. Things aren't what they seem at first.

No chick lit book can be complete without the love interest. Still getting over her divorce, Bailey is only looking for a summer fling. She finds it in Beau Regan, a television producer. Will she find love? One of the reasons why I liked this book so much was because of the love interest. Beau Regan probably isn't the type of guy most women would date in real life, but the way their romance plays out is very realistic.

Best book I have ever read on Sales

Bar none, this is the best book you will ever read about the art of selling. Moreover, this book will change the way you think about hiring, training, managing and motivating anyone who is responsible for bringing new customers to your organization and keeping those customers engaged.
See of you can answer this question from the book correctly:
What do the top sales and marketing professionals have in common?
a. Experience and background
b. Education and training
c. Great presentation skills
d. Aggressive closers
e. None of the above
If you guessed "e", you are correct. According Gallup's extensive research spanning 30 years and interviews with 250,000 sales people, over 1 million customers and 25,000 sales managers, this is what the top sales people have in common:
* They were in the type of sales job where they were able to use their top talents every day
* They developed their own unique selling style based on their top talents
* They had a productive relationship with their manager.
Since the top 25 % of the sales force accounts for 57% of the sales revenue in most organizations, the more sales people get to use their top talents, the more likely they are to build a sustainable and profitable customer base.
So, how do you discover your individual strengths and talents? One of the unique features of this book is that you go to an Internet site and take an assessment that will immediately tell you what your top five strengths are. What I found intriguing is that these strengths are much more practical than the strengths I have seen in any other kind of assessment instruments. You can then use the book to determine how to put these strengths to work for you so they become true talents. (By focusing on these strengths I have increased my own productivity by 100%!!)
The other thing I really liked about this book is the easy to read format and the fact that the author includes great real world stories and examples of how top sales people used their talents to excel in their job. The author, Benson Smith, who started his career as a successful salesperson with a Fortune 500 medical device company and eventually became the CEO, writes in clear business language and does not spend a lot of time espousing complicated theories. If anything, the book is too short and leaves you wanting more.
The book also talks about the key role that managers play in insuring the success of the sales effort. The chapter on management should be required reading for anyone who is a manager or thinks they want to become one. (You will also find this chapter extremely helpful if your current manager is less than ideal.)
I have spent over 20 years in the medical and pharmaceutical industry in sales, management, marketing and training. Over the last 9 years, I have had a successful business focused on performance development consulting and training. This book has inspired me to rethink my approach. I hope it will do the same for others in my profession. Most organizations tie training to "improvement opportunities." Gallup's research has found that training will be far more productive if you focus on strengths and how to build them into true talents.

Understand Your Sales Career - Know which job to pursue

I will first tell you that I have read thousands of books over the course of my life, many were books on business and sales. This is the first time that I have ever felt compelled to write a review. Also this is the first time I ever read a business book and then felt disappointed when the book was over, I would normally feel that way at the end of a particularly good novel.
I'll just have to go and buy all the other books in the series.
The information imparted by "Discovering Your Sales Strengths" has had a profound impact on me. Undoubtedly many salespeople that read the book will suddenly understand their own career a whole lot better. And hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of unenlightened and just plain dumb sales management.
This book has also greatly improved my overall confidence. I will probably be changing jobs later this year and I'll actually really know what kinds of jobs to aggressively pursue.

Strengths & Sales = Gallup Delivers

Once again the Gallup organization, specifically Benson Smith and Tony Ruttigliano, deliver a good usable book to help improve your career based on strengths. This book begins with Gallup's common message, based on research, that if you focus on what you are good at; you will get better at it. This book continues on showing you what makes up a these strengths, based on a combination of talents which cluster together and come out as things like Competition, Empathy, and Command. This book will allow you to focus more on how you are wired, and what you have, than what you do not, and will never have.
Most importantly this book gives you access to your 'Top Five' strengths, or patterns for success. These strengths, ranging from Harmony to Woo, will show you how you alone are as unique as 1 in 30 million people. The book could have been 5 stars if Gallup would have provided more patterns of strength and how they work in sales careers, they only give you a few morsels from their vault of knowledge and what patterns and combinations of strengths work in sales. They do let you in on the fact that Competition, Command and Empathy were themes commonly found in successful sales-agents.
Overall this book is an A-, another great work from Gallup based on research, not just theory.

Spectacular insights into building an entrepreneurial society

As a serial entrepreneur, VC and angel investor, and teacher of entrepreneurship for many years, I am enthralled by "Startup Nation". It is a fascinating story of how Israel has succeeded disproportionately to its size and certainly to its geographic situation. It teaches valuable and unique lessons about region building and industry building. The principles of the country that stimulate individual entrepreneurial behavior in the military, in agriculture, and especially in high technology are lessons for all. I have shared the book with several leaders of industry and finance who have seen it as a remarkably interesting read.

Israeli exceptionality in contributing to global technological progress

There is a growing literature which speaks of the distinctiveness of Israel and its unique contribution to global culture. I think most recently of George Gilder's outstanding 'The Israel Test'. No doubt one impulse for the creation of such books has been the worldwide campaign to delegitimize Israel, as prelude to physically destroying it. Thus the very pro- Israel books come in a way as contributions to the justification of the Jewish state, and as defense of it. What is of course distressing about this, and the need for paeans to Israeli exceptionality is the fact that Israel is the only country in the world which is required to 'justify' its existence in this way.
In any case this present book focuses on Israel's scientific and even more technological achievements. It speaks about the Israeli reaction to the Arab boycott, and the special situation of 'confinement' Israelis feel at not having normal access to neighboring countries. Israel is a very small country physically and thus many have a certain claustrophobic sense , especially those youngsters who have served in the Army. After the Army many young people adventurously use their new - found freedom.
Two forms of this are the trekking Israelis do throughout distant regions of the world, with special emphasis on South America, and the India- Nepal region, and the 'tech-ing' Israelis do in creating start-ups at a rate all out of proportion to their numbers in the world. Israelis have hooked into high- tech communications and rode on the wave of a world economy which is increasingly electronic.
The start- ups too come in part because of an encouraging government policy, which devotes a high proportion of funds to research. But they also come because Israelis are a people continually forced to find non- conventional answers to very difficult and unusual problems.
For any supporter of Israel, and I assume that this is the real audience of this book, this book will be a real pleasure. It will provide yet more evidence of how one small state manages to make real contributions to the global economy, and the scientific and technological progress of mankind.

An enjoyable read

This is an enjoyable read that highlights how Israel has come to become such a leader in high tech startups. It is quick, light reading that explores the historical and cultural aspects that lead so many Israelis to pursue entrepreneurship.

In Israel, it seems, there is a culture that embraces the questioning of authority, a flat hierarchical structure across society, and risk seeking behavior. For those who have traveled to Israel, these notions will not be unfamiliar to you. Furthermore, the book explores how the contacts made during mandatory army service serve as valuable social networking tools later on.

The book was exactly was I was hoping for. It is written for the layperson, and did not read like an academic journal. While most books about Israel focus on its conflict with the Palestinians, this book only brought up politics and conflict as it pertained to the subject at hand, and didn't editorialize in the process. Furthermore, the multitude of stories and vignettes made it a engaging read that held my interest for the time I sat reading it.

Still, as the response to books like Sharon Ewell Foster's Passing by Samaria shows, there is a clear need for African-American Christian fiction; despite its flaws, it is likely many readers will savor this novel of romance, intrigue and faith.

not as expected

I don't think this is a really good book though it got a real moral question to ask yourself - if you were the main character, what would you do? However, other than that, there was not much to think about. Obviously, there would be a lot of answers to different people.

I felt the storyline is VERY slow. For 3/4 of the book, it was only telling how the bride-to-be not ready to get marry. The worries she was facing were no big deal and I did not even understand what was holding her. There didn't seem anything that was bothering her life. All the characters were not developed. The groom-to-be had nothing to say other than "I love you always".

The only good thing about the book was to bring out how a christain's daily life or belief can affect the people around her. It was never the words or how good you could interpret the bible, but the action and all the little things you did everyday. People were watching you and they learn God from all these little things. As a christian, I think we really need to be 24/7 living in God's way 'cuz people are watching us....

Great Book

I recently re-read Joy and decided to take the time to write a review.
This was an outstanding book. Great plot, great story, fine, strong characters and an ending I didn't guess. How refreshing.
I enjoy reading Christian fiction that isn't preachy and this was certainly a great find. Anya's challenges were real and the way she dealt with things was just like any of us would. For example, finding a rich, handsome husband, knowing he isn't the one in your heart, but delaying giving him the ring back. I think we'd all twist that ring around on our finger before we returned it. Pushing out the voices in our head that tell us right from wrong (otherwise known as the Holy Spirit), we all do this as well.
The supsense as to who the stalker was and whether or not she was going to end up with David was so overwhelming I could hardly wait to finish the book. Then when I did I was disappointed there wasn't more to read!
Thanks Ms. Murray for a great book!

From childhood, Apple's grandfather Rocky, who is best described as a "difficult character," played a unique role in his grandson's life. Their closeness was enhanced when the two began sharing a room as Apple grew up. This arrangement continued, due to family circumstances, when Apple went away to college. All through his rise to maturity and through the stormy Sixties Apple strove to remain loyal to Rocky, even though Rocky initially rejected Apple's wife. Throughout his long life-Rocky lived to age 107-Apple treated him with respect and affection. At age 103 Rocky managed to pull things together when Apple's wife fell gravely ill. Endearing and sweet story...

An endearing account of the author's life, most of which was spent living with his grandfather. Filled with sweet and often humorous tales of his often tumultuous relationship with his aging grandfather, this book is a testament to the special love shared between a grandparent and a grandchild.

Roommates is also one man's coming of age story...a story in which we see him turn from a young man pursuing love and higher education to a father and husband who, through all of life's trials, finds his best friend and greatest supporter in his grandfather.

This book provides the reader with an honest and sometimes difficult look into the intimate relationship shared by these two men from different times and different cultures who clung to each other through all life threw at them.

Rocky, my hero

Although this is quite a thin book (a mere 211 pages), which i read over the course of a weekend, i was left with the feeling that it was much longer. It covers a lot of ground. It moves quickly through time and space, and at the end i realized i had traveled through many different landscapes:

- the relationship between Max and his grandfather, Rocky (who in fact had the unspellable name of Yerachmiel)

- the family dynamics while Max is growing up, where everybody is in everybody's business (and i thought my family was unique)

- The American life of Lithuanian-Polish Orthodox Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century

- Max in college in the 60s, with Vietnam as a backdrop

- Max and his romantic life, Debby, etc

- Joel Kerner and his terrible accident

- Marriage, and kids

- Debby's disease

- The effects of Debby's absence on the children

- Rocky's renaissance

Among others!

This is a very well written memoir, and it makes me want to find other works by Max Apple. He was able to cover so much ground with such elegant flow, and it amazes me how the narrative was never hurried or incomplete.

That picture on the cover, with Rocky mixing dough, is worth almost all of the words of the book. To say he was spunky would be a disservice to Rocky. He was above convention, stubborn as a deaf bull, but adorable.

Although there were some "made-for-TV" moments (Rocky baking cookies, the final scene during the burial), i'd rather categorize them into the "life is cornier than fiction" section. Most of the time i marveled at the closeness this family had, plus i had to laugh at some of Rocky's antics.

Reading Roommates;My Grandfather's Story & Gootie; My Grandmothers Story, took me back home to the same neighborhood and time frame. Max Apple & his sisters and I & my sisters, lived about 6 doors from each other and played toghther from time to time. I remember his sisters twin beds and wished they were mine. One of those men walking to and from American Seating was my father.I remember "two bit Sophie".What a hoot!Later my sister Betty would be Dr. Farber's office nurse for many years.As a nurse I also took care of Debby and on another occasion, her mother, at St. Mary's Hospital. American Bakery, Jack Remes, Steketee's,the grocery store around the corner etc all brought my early childhood back vividly . I also remember the faces of Gootie & Rocky. The picture of Gootie looks exactly like my "Busha".Anyone growing up in that neighborhood in Grand Rapids, MI the late 40's and 50's can go home again.

Where have we heard this before? ? ?

This book says nothing more than what has been known as long as man has been civilized.Trying to relate everything to some ism,karma,mantra,location of the planets or stars,numerology or New Age has been attempted for time immemorial.Although I have never paid much attention to physics or astrologers,as they never seem to predict anything but the obvious or after the fact,and are great with lingo categorizing everything into a neat little package,I thought I'd give this book a go anyway.
I found nothing new in the book and everything was summed up in the last chapter of self evident truths,which the author basically admits in the end.These truths have been developed throughout the ages and have changed little, if at all.An ideal world where everything and everybody follows these truths is something else and that is why civilizations have had all their trials and tribulations.Perfect little worlds,of communes living in seclusion,meditation and perfection are fine;but to think that all of civilization will live that way is simply not realistic;and could be referred to only as heaven on earth.
In this new millennium,as in the past,change is the only thing that will be constant,and if an author were to address this subject 500 years from now,the keys will remain the same as they were 500 years ago.
Maybe that's all the author is really trying to tell us; follow the truths(keys),and forget all that psychic,astrology,isms and New Age stuff.

THE BOOK MOST CERTAINLY LOOSES SOMETHING IN THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION. WHY MERCADO WROTE A BOOK, I DO NOT KNOW. MERCADO IS A VISUAL MEDIUM, SKIP THE BOOK, SKIP ANYTHING EXCEPT THE DVD.

I love this book because it helps me catalogue my baseball cards. I am able to see what cards I have and don't have. And it is a beautiful book. Much better than using a computer program to catalogue your cards.
