First Family (King & Maxwell), by David Baldacci

Following the instant #1 New York Times bestseller Simple Genius, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell return in David Baldacci's most heart-pounding thriller to date . . .
FIRST FAMILY
It began with what seemed like an ordinary children's birthday party. Friends and family gathered to celebrate. There were balloons and cake, games and gifts.
This party, however, was far from ordinary. It was held at Camp David, the presidential retreat. And it ended with a daring kidnapping . . . which immediately turned into a national security nightmare.
Sean King and Michelle Maxwell were not looking to become involved. As former Secret Service agents turned private investigators, they had no reason to be. The FBI doesn't want them interfering. But years ago, Sean King saved the First Lady's husband, then a senator, from political disaster. Now, Sean is the one person the First Lady trusts, and she presses Sean and Michelle into the desperate search to rescue the abducted child.
With Michelle still battling her own demons, and forces aligned on all sides against her and Sean, the two are pushed to the absolute limit. In the race to save an innocent victim, the line between friend and foe will become impossible to define . . . or defend.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Plenty of intense action drives bestseller Baldacci's stellar fourth novel to feature former Secret Service agents Michelle Maxwell and Sean King (after Simple Genius). Maxwell and King, D.C. PIs, step on the toes of everyone, including the FBI and the Secret Service. They even manage to bruise the ego of First Lady Jane Cox, who hires them after her 12-year-old niece is kidnapped following a birthday party at Camp David. Baldacci excels at making the improbable believable as one obsessed man, 62-year-old Sam Quarry, takes on the best security the U.S. can muster from his Alabama redoubt. Even more impressive than Quarry's determined campaign is the ingeniousness with which Baldacci manages to disguise both Quarry's precise motivation and aims. Meanwhile, Maxwell has to deal with her mother's death and a host of other personal issues. Baldacci's careful plotting and confidant depictions of national security procedures make this a thinking man's thriller. (Apr. 21)

Review
"Ron McLarty is the perfect choice to present Baldacci's latest thriller. His clear, strong voice shifts effortlessly among the story's varying passages of sadness, anger, and irony. His facility with multiple characters of both genders and many ages, races, and regional accents enables the listener easily to keep track of everyone. Music and sound effects, used liberally in the opening sequences, trail off as the story progresses, becoming less frequent and lower in volume with each chapter. Too bad-their use enhances the story."―AudioFile

Captivating and satisfying
By allie Brummond
First Family is David Baldacci's follow-up to Simple Genius. Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are summoned by Pam Dutton to instruct them on their next case. Before they can meet with her, however, they notice two men running from the scene firing their guns. As they investigate the house they notice Pam is dead, but, Willa, her eldest daughter, is missing. Subplots are plenty as Michelle, who is still struggling to come to terms about her mother's death, returns home to be with her father. First Family is a beefy book with twists and turns reminiscent of a roller coaster. Its politics and scandals are so complex that the reader stays in tune with the book from page one, and doesn't blink until the book ends. David Baldacci has once again delivered a novel that will captivate its readers....

I would also highly recommend: S is for Sirens a novel that ranked one of the best this year.

It is, what it is.
By CAPinBoynton
I have read all of David Baldacci's books; and yes, some are better than others. I don't think that First Family was his best book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I like the characters of Sean and Michelle and hope to see them again in future adventures. The "all charm but can't keep his pants zipped" President and his manipulative, powerful first lady were very believable (due to our own country's past history). Sam Quarry was a stereotypical redneck and somewhat extreme example of how some picture Southerners. Since I am from MS / AL, Sam was insulting, but plausible. The story line was, at times, stretching the reader's acceptance; but that is one of the appeals of Baldacci's writing. He pushes the believability factor to the absolute limit and then just a little beyond. But after all, that's why I am reading, for the entertainment factor. It's not supposed to be anything more. I'm anxiously awaiting his next book.

Just a review of the printed book.
By J. Lee
I'm not a kindle user, so am not involved in the controversy that makes up most of the reviews based upon it's Kindle price. This is simply a review of the book after reading it. And, I found it to be a decent thriller with one major flaw. Here's the upsides and downsides of it for me:

Upsides:
- I love the characters in this book: From "superheroes" Michelle, the blunt damaged secret service agent and Sean, her big more laid back partner to the evil-or-is-he-so-evil Quarry.
- Even though Michelle and Sean are from his previous book Simple Genius - this works just fine as a stand-alone thriller.

Downsides:
- The beginning was a little slow, though it picks up in the middle. (There's an interesting side-plot with Michelle in the middle that picked up the pace, but I expected it to connect more with the total story).

- The overall plot is mildly implausible, but that's alright given it's thriller nature and that there's Baldacci's writing to compensate. But, the ending just gets outrageously implausible. There's about 70 pages of it that go from one completely unbelievable action to another. I would just get through one thing that happened that I'd had to convince myself that "alright, maybe it's a little believable", before something even more outlandish would occur! The size of the "holes in the story"- just grew wider and wider!

BOTTOM LINE: A good page-turning premise and characters brought down to a just average thriller(and below what I expect from Baldacci) by some completely implausible action at the end.

Amazon.com Review
Another addition to the ever expanding shelf of literature devoted to the Simpson trial. Attorney Robert Shapiro, architect of the defense strategy and assembler of the "dream team," offers his views of the characters and events of the trial.

From Library Journal
As the lead defense attorney for O.J. Simpson, Shapiro is ably suited to play the role of the avid apologist for both his client and the American criminal justice system, which assumes that a defendant is innocent until guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The author reminds us that the burden of proof rests with the prosecution and that the defense needs only to cast sufficient doubt on the state's case to bring about acquittal. Countering the prosecution's "mountain of evidence" with a "mountain of doubt," Shapiro shows how he and his colleagues were able to punch holes in such key areas as crime scene management, evidence collection and storage, crime lab techniques and conditions, DNA sample reliability, and the credibility and character of many of the prosecution's witnesses, most notably the now infamous Mark Fuhrman. The author does a good job of convincing the reader that fairness and justice dictated the verdict. His excellent book also penetrates the innermost workings of the defense team. Recommended for anyone interested in the tactics and strategies of criminal trial lawyers.?Phillip Young Blue, New York State Supreme Court Criminal Branch Lib.

From Booklist
A strong sense of place imbues most good mysteries, whether it's Tony Hillerman's Southwest or Raymond Chandler's L.A. Brattleboro, Vermont, however, seems an unlikely place for streets mean enough to support a series of first-rate cop novels, but author Archer Mayor and his hero, Lieutenant Joe Gunther, will make readers into believers. This time out, Joe investigates a vicious home invasion inflicted on one of the town's few Asian families. The victims will say nothing, but Brattleboro's homegrown hoodlums are frightened of vicious Asian thugs apparently at war over control of the town. Gunther and his fellow cops are outgunned and overmatched unless he can convince an alphabet soup of U.S. and Canadian law enforcement agencies to work together. The novel works in every way a good police procedural must: the cops are good, but they're carrying a lot of human baggage; the bad guys are really baaad. There's also a strong sense that the depiction of Asian organized crime is as timely and real as a CNN news report. And Mayor's Brattleboro is a fascinating place that beckons readers to return. Thomas Gaughan

Review
''Explosive action scenes being a specialty of the author's, you can count on a tense showdown with guns blazing on all sides. But when the noise dies, Mr. Mayor leaves us with the sobering impression that no town is small enough to escape the global reach of sophisticated criminals who are really good at their work.'' --New York Times

''Archer Mayor is producing what are consistently the best police-procedural series being written in America.'' --Chicago Tribune, praise for the author

''Mayor's Brattleboro is a fascinating place that beckons readers to return.'' --Booklist

My favorite of the series.
By S. McHale
I've read all of the Joe Gunther mysteries except for Occam's Razor and The Skeleton's Knee. This one if my favorite. It is the most tense and fastest paced out of the bunch. It is also very eerie in that we don't know or see the criminals except when they strike at one part of the state or the other. We only hear sketchy details about the criminal's lives as Joe's squadron does their research and deduction. The criminals in this case are Asian gang kingpins. Since we don't see them at work, we are spared stereotypes or other such gaffes. Instead, we get to sense the frustration that goes into investigating highly mobile, nationally networked, very sub-rosa criminals. Despite all the investigations, the story moves very fast. My only complaint is the ending is not satisfactory - it's almost comic bookish given the dose of reality throughout the story.

Well written, but tends to plod a bit.
By Old Fisherman
First, let me say that Mr. Mayor certainly knows police procedure. I don't know if his background is in law enforcement or not (mine is not) but the whole thing sounds very convincing to me. The story concerns Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro Vt. police department and his attempts to unravel the murder of Benny Travers, one of Brattleboro's less savory citizens. All the signs begin to point to an Asian gang invasion of Brattleboro and the surrounding communities and Mr. Mayor leads us convincingly through the process that Lt. Gunther takes to solve the murder.
Mr. Mayor is a good writer and his sense of place is very strong, however I found the writing very un-emotional. It almost seems as if you're reading a police report rather than a fictional mystery. There is also a large cast of characters and it's sometimes hard to keep them straight. Especially since many of the characters in this book or oriental with both their given names and their anglicized names used interchangeably.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, with some reservations. If you like police procedure this book is excellent. I don't think Mr. Mayor takes any liberties at all with reality when he describes what Lt. Gunther has to go through to not only conduct his investigation but to appease the beauracracy in his own department. So it's a very realistic book. However, if you like a more slam-bang approach (which I admit, I do) you may find this book just a tad tedious.

More Telling than Action
By Amber Fox
The Joe Gunther mysteries is one of my favorite series when it comes to police procedural books. This novel, in particular, was not my favorite. I think the author was engrossed in telling us what he had researched and in working with the Montreal police and not in giving an action novel as he usually does. I like the way Mayor describes the scenery and towns and actions. A person can see where the characters are and have a sense of the places. I will definitely read another Joe Gunther book.

Truly Inspiring and Uplifting!
By Patricia M. Foster
This devotional is great as it is down-to-earth, uplifting and inspiring words about the Lord, especially in times of grief and sadness. Just hours ago, I called a prayer line but no one was there, to ask them a very important question to me about God's word. I am deeply saddened and troubled as I am very ill and may have lost my only son forever, among other life-threatening problems. I opened the brand new devotional for the first time this morning, and to my surprise it had been earmarked (perhaps through shipping). It was earmarked to a page/devotional that not only gave me the answer I so badly needed, it gave me hope to hold on and to know our Heavenly Father hears us and all we need do is wait and not fear. I feel deeply relieved. I have always liked Joyce Meyer's devotions, and this was is a great one to start the day. Thanks, Joyce Meyer.

"POWERFULLY MOVING FROM BEGINNING TO END!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Bestselling author Joyce Meyer, a well-known Bible teacher on radio and TV world-wide, has come through once again in this inspiring book of devotionals. She chronicles a devotion for everyday that uplifts the soul with direction, and guidance along the way.She teaches the reader how to believe and have trust in God and in themselves, especially helpful if the person has lost all trust and faith. What the world needs now for any individual going through a crisis, feeling that they need healing, or simply needs to seek comfort and security is exactly what the author has delivered. Joyce Meyer makes a difference! I gifted this to my daughter, a special needs child, who suffered trauma from bullies this past year. As her disabilities were attacked, so was her mental and physical health. Individuals that suffer such trauma for one reason or another, not only need medical attention for the damages, but just as important, healing for their mental stability and well-being. Joyce Meyer is an expert in helping anyone regain their confidence and self-esteem, simply by learning how to believe once again. The results of this book can help to mend the broken pieces, alleviate fear and anxiety, and guide the reader to move forward. In addition, the author helps to boost positive behavior, motivate, and lift your spirits to a favorable comfort zone. I can only say with deep respect and admiration, 'Thank you Joyce!' Refreshing, uplifting, and powerfully moving throughout. Highly recommended!

Love Love this daily devotion
By Anthony Adamgbo
I love love this daily devotion. Seriously, it's my best friend every morning when I wake up. The scripture verses are too short, so I tend to read a little more to get more background info. My 10 months old loves the front cover so we read it together.

Somebody to Love?: A Rock-and-Roll Memoir, by Grace Slick, Andrea Cagan

She has been called rock and roll's original female outlaw, as famous for her bad behaviour as for her haunting singing voice. From White Rabbit and Somebody to Love to Sarah and Miracles, the songs she performed became the anthems of a generation. Whether describing her antics at the White House with Abbie Hoffman or the unforgettable experience that was Woodstock, Slick's recollections have the same rich imagery found in her lyrics. In this provocative narrative, readers will discover the many sides of Grace Slick: as artistic pioneer; she records songs with Jerry Garcia and David Crosby; as practitioner of freedom and rebellion; she beds Jim Morrison and gets arrested for DUI on three separate occasions; without actually being in a car; and as a loving mother to actress China Kantner; she tries to balance casual friendship with parental wisdom. Through the unflinching eye of a survivor, this no-holds-barred memoir brings to life the people and spirit that defined a quarter-century of American pop culture. In her 25-year career as a musician, Grace Slick charted dozens of hits and sold millions of albums; Jefferson Airplane (1965-1972) hit #3 on the Billboard charts with Surrealistic Pillow, and Jefferson Starship (1974-1989) charted four #1 singles. Includes one 4-page colour photo insert. Also available as a Time Warner AudioBook read by the author.

Amazon.com Review
Grace Slick looks back on a lifetime of sex, drugs and rock & roll in Somebody to Love?, a wisecracking memoir featuring cameos by some mighty famous faces. As the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane (later Jefferson Starship and, still later, Starship), Slick had a ringside seat for some of the decade's most notorious high jinks--Haight-Ashbury, Woodstock, the sexual revolution, and of course, '60s drug culture. Put it this way: if the dormouse said feed your head, Slick did--again and again and again. Which leads to this memoir's principal shortcoming: it's hard to document the most important decade of your life if you can't remember it. Still, even if she's a little fuzzy on some of the details, the anecdotes alone are worth the price of admission, from the time Slick and Abbie Hoffman plotted to dose Richard Nixon to her surreal sexual encounter with a nearly autistic-seeming Jim Morrison: "Although I knew there was some pattern of events going on in his head that connected what I'd just said to what he was thinking, it never made sense." Now sober and nearing her 60s, Slick frets over her aging body, campaigns against biomedical research, and feeds the raccoons in her back yard. But she hasn't lost any of her famous feistiness. This is the same woman who flashed her breasts at photographers, pulled her skirt over her head at concerts, and even once, "having ingested the entire contents of the minibar in my hotel room," stuck her fingers up an audience member's nose. Grace Slick may have mellowed, but bless her heart, she's still running off her mouth. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
Rock chanteuse Grace Slick was a sophomore at the University of Miami when, in 1958, a friend from her Bay-area hometown sent her an article about the new San Francisco scene?a world of "marijuana, rock music and strange but pleasantly artistic beatnik behavior." Intrigued, Slick returned home and threw herself into a counterculture that was distinctly at odds with her post-war middle-class upbringing. After playing in a popular local band for a few years, she joined the front ranks of '60s rock icons when she was invited to sing for the already-prominent band Jefferson Airplane, recording hits like "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" that helped to define the kaleidoscopic rock world of the 1960s. Here, Slick unabashedly details her long flirtation with psychedelic drugs; her dalliances with Jim Morrison ("like making love to a floating art form with eyes") and lesser rock luminaries; her many run-ins with the law; and her experiences of marriage and motherhood as her band evolved from rebellious trailblazers into the florid mainstream radio acts Jefferson Starship and Starship. Her present-day dedication to animal-rights causes, visual art and spirituality are also recounted. There are few revelations here, and Slick's penchant for elliptical, hippie-ish pronouncements ("Life, the constantly mutating funeral party") won't win her many new fans. But the appealingly wry good humor she brings to her own life story makes this an engaging trip through two turbulent decades of rock 'n' roll. Photos. Editor, Rich Horgan; agent, Maureen Regan. From Library Journal
As lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick fired the imaginations of a generation. In this frank, often crazy memoir, she does not disappoint those who remember her direct, off-the-wall wisecracking. She provides a highly entertaining insider's report of many of the psychedelic era's major events, including Woodstock and Altamont, seen through the proverbial haze of sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll, as well as her liaisons with Jim Morrison and various members of her band. Eventually, the years of extravagant living and self-abuse began to take their toll. After three DUI arrests and periods of drug rehabilitation, she now lives in Malibu and is active in animal rights causes. The era of free love has never been better chronicled. Slick's appealingly blunt and funny narrative nicely complements Barbara Rowes's Grace Slick: The Biography (LJ 2/15/80). Recommended for public libraries and all music/pop culture collections.

A quick read that hits the high points.
By o'neal lane
As a biography this is a fair work. Although be aware, Grace did not write it just penned some haphazard notes that her co-writer had to put into some coherent order. This is by her own admission.

If your looking for a peek into the depths and inner workings of Jefferson Airplane and the whole 60's rock movement you might be disappointed. This work hits the high points. Grace seems not to be a detail person and her recollections are tainted by her use of powerful mind altering drugs. This again of her own admission.

This work reads fast. The chapters are short and direct. With the very blunt and frank Grace you will find out a lot about her, even the bad stuff.

Somebody to like a lot in any case!
By Gregor von Kallahann
Grace Slick was always one of the more quotable rock stars. Even well past the point where Rolling Stone would even consider giving one of her records (solo or with Jefferson Whatever...) anything remotely like a positive review, they'd still run little blurbs on her from time to time, usually with one or two "outrageous" quotes.
She could be counted on for that. Funny, sarcastic, but also endearingly self-deprecating, her take on the world in general and the absurdities of rock stardom in particular were always worth a look. Once when asked about all the attention she received as the sole female member of a six-"man" band, she pooh-poohed it all by saying, "Well, if you had five cows and a pig, you'd look at the pig, right?" Well, yeah, although Grace was scarcely a pig, and I don't know about how her bandmates may have felt about being called cows, but you get the idea.
Often described by people as an "ice queen"--at least by people who had never heard of Nico--Grace was actually pretty down to earth and anything but self-serious. On the other hand, her penchant for wisecracking and sheer outrageousness often detracted from her more reflective, artsy side. Her own compositions, with their often elliptical lyrics and exotic arrangements, hinted at an artistic ambition that was very real--if never fully realized. Still "rejoyce," "Two Heads" and "Hyperdrive" remain real dazzlers, suggesting that if Grace had been less given to epataying the old bourgeoisie (and ribbing the counter-culture too, much to her credit) she might have pulled off something even more remarkable than what she (with and without her various bands) actually did achieve.
The book is, for the most part, a fun breezy read, the funny, quotable, outrageous Grace. No, it's not all it might have been, but it was pretty much what I expected. This is one of those odd books, where you suspect that the narrator's apparent "frankness" actually serves as a kind of defense. Don't let's dig too deep, God forbid. One can read between the lines a bit, especially in the brief early chapters that describe her childhood and adolescence, and maybe conclude that there are some conflicts there above and beyond what she's willing to reveal. And well, that's OK. Really, most of us are not THAT nosey. But the tone is an odd juxtaposition of self-disclosure and self-protectiveness. "Odd"--but not really all that surprising. Honesty--or as we said in the 60s, "righteousness"--was a counter-cultural value, but you couldn't get too "corny" about the whole thing either.
I could have done without another re-hashing of the "plot to dose Nixon" co-starring Abbie Hoffman. Despite Grace's protestations to the contrary, I don't believe she ever intended to get any further than the White House gate--you don't bring Hoffman as your escort if you really want to get in and wreak a little psychedelic havoc on the President of the United States. It's a wild tale, but it was more theater and self-mythologizing than anything else.
Nor do I particularly care about the Jim Morrison episode (the strawberry jam session). It seemed like a pretty meaningless encounter for both participants, but someone (co-writer Andrea Cagan, perhaps?) must have thought it merited a chapter of its own. It's disappointing that this kind of tale-telling is given more focus than on the music itself. In one revealing passage, Slick talks about her compulsion to be as well rehearsed as possible. That kind of professionalism may seem antithetical to "hippie" ideals of spontaneity and improvisation. But that was one of the little contradictions that made Slick a compelling figure to begin with. Too bad that same level of care didn't really make it into the autobiography.
Now that it's available as a paperback (or as a remaindered cloth-bound edition), the book is well worth picking up--for curiousity seekers as well as fans. Enough of the quotable Grace is there. The mysterioso, orphic Grace is missing in action though. Too bad in a way.

What makes Grace Tick?
By David Proffitt
I have been a Grace Slick fan when I first heard Jefferson Aiplane. To me, I don't think there's a better female vocalist than her. Just my opinion here. I wanted to know more about her and what makes her tick so what better way than to read her autobiography?
Grace is an honest woman at least in her book, she isn't afraid to tell how she feels about everything from the government to sex to the guys in the band. It's a very fun read, and I looked forward to reading it each night after I went to bed. You become aware after a little reading that there's a hell of a lot more to Grace Slick than just her beautiful voice and goregous looks. She is a very intelligent woman has her own ideas about everything and doesn't just follow the crowd. If she thinks something is stupid, emabarassing she won't do it.
I came away from the book feeling like Grace was my next door neighbor. I also felt like I had a heart to heart talk with her for hours. I think she's a great woman, totally beautiful with a voice to match. I really liked this book. If you feel like I do and would like to get to know Gracie a little better buy this book. There's nothing boring in it at all. A very good read, and written by a woman with a great vocabulary as well. If you are just curios about her buy the book.

This guide to creating optimal connections with others is an excellent follow-up to THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, which sounded magical in the hands of voice pro Hugh Gallagher. In this production of his latest book, the author's lifeless reading is clear and sincere enough to not get in the way of the lesson--a sparsely worded primer on neuro-linguistic programming. It's well-organized instruction, full of detailed information on the three conditions for connecting effectively, the four communication styles, and many other ideas for improving communication with others. Though some may see the techniques as mechanical or manipulative, the audio will help many become more sensitive to other people's signals and work a little harder to connect with them effectively. The production includes printable worksheets and questionnaires. T.W. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

Michael J. Losier, author of LAW OF ATTRACTION, has written a follow-up to that work, LAW OF CONNECTION: The Science of Using NLP to Create Ideal Personal and Professional Relationships. In this new work, Losier uses four different communication styles and suggests a how-to in applying them to build or repair rapport (a connection) with others. Whether you need help in developing and repairing relationships in your personal or professional life, Losier provides a common-sense approach that will improve your relationship skills.

The four NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) styles are: Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Digital. He even provides a self-assessment test to determine which style your own communication falls into. I seemed to be a combination of both Visual and Kinesthetic.

Losier states that it is a matter of knowing and recognizing what style the person you are communicating with uses and adapting your own style so you can better understand the other person. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Words, mannerisms and attitude all go into communicating with others. I remember when I volunteered for the Make-A-Wish Foundation who had the delightful job of talking with children to learn of their deepest desires, I would sit on the floor, sit with them on their beds, whatever. My goal was to get down to their level so they would open up and talk with me more honestly. It works with children and it works with adults. What Losier is saying here is that one has to understand where the other person is coming from before they can communicate effectively.

This is a good book with practical advice and methods that you can use in your everyday communication. It would be a good work to have in your library for future reference. We can never learn too much about communicating with others. Our own survival depends upon it.

Disappointed...
By Customer
Unfortunately, there is nothing new in this book that hasn't already been outlined in much greater detail. I've known about the 4 personality types for almost 20 years. What I've known (and what is certainly true of myself) is that most people don't fall squarely into 1 personality type. I am straight down the middle between two types. Not to mention, trying to fit someone into a type without giving them the opportunity of testing for accuracy, can become a waste of time. I like the author, just not this book. I waited and waited for this book to come out, spent good money for it, and realized that there is nothing different, innovative or even interesting here. The book is full of nagging details and rules. Too much difficulty, and too much time required to get it all down. I want to spend time enjoying myself, and connecting to others in ways that are enjoyable. Not making it a tedious, technical and limiting process. Sorry, but this is my honest review.

Fantastic Book - Connect and Communicate Better
By Brigitte Nadeau
Michael Losier is a fantastic teacher and author of another great book on Law of Attraction. His new book "Law of Connection" is a great companion book.

I learned so much from the Law of Connection. Great Techniques to communicate better and if you want to improve your rapport with co-workers, family members and friends, this is the book for you.

The most valuable information for me was learning about the communication style, how to identify them and how to address each of them for better communication and connection.

Great value, great learning and a great book

The Best of Me, by Nicholas Sparks

"Everyone wanted to believe that endless love was possible. She'd believed in it once, too, back when she was eighteen."

In the spring of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

Now, twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson are summoned back to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. Neither has lived the life they imagined . . . and neither can forget the passionate first love that forever changed their lives. As Amanda and Dawson carry out the instructions Tuck left behind for them, they realize that everything they thought they knew -- about Tuck, about themselves, and about the dreams they held dear -- was not as it seemed. Forced to confront painful memories, the two former lovers will discover undeniable truths about the choices they have made. And in the course of a single, searing weekend, they will ask of the living, and the dead: Can love truly rewrite the past?

Amazon.com Review
A Q&A with Author Nicholas Sparks

Q: What was your inspiration for writing The Best of Me?

A: I suppose the inspiration was two-fold. It had been a long time since I’d done a “reunion” story (like The Notebook) so it was time to do another. At the same time, I wanted it to be different than The Notebook in almost every way. At the same time, I wanted to write a novel about characters in their forties. At that age, people are coming to terms with the decisions and choices they’ve made in the past. The Best of Me was essentially a combination of those two ideas.

Q: This book deals with falling in love for the first time and how sometimes that love is so strong it can cross the span of time and space no matter what happens. Is that something you believe in?

A: Yes, I believe it’s possible. First love is always powerful, and for some people, that love really does last forever. The problem with that, however, is that over time, the love often becomes romanticized. I wanted to write a novel that explored that concept as well. Neither Dawson nor Amanda are the same people they’d been when they were younger, and little by little, that romanticism diminishes over the course of the story. For them, however, the new reality nonetheless left them feeling the same way about each other as they once had. And yet, they fell in love once more. Or maybe, phrasing it differently, they never fell out of love in the first place.

Q: Former high school sweethearts Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole reconnect after 25 years when their mentor, Tuck Hostetler, dies and they are summoned back to Oriental, North Carolina for his funeral. One of things that drove Amanda and Dawson apart was that they were from the opposite side of the tracks. Are class differences still a part of everyday life in a town like Oriental, North Carolina?

A: Class differences aren’t as powerful as they once were, but they’re still prevalent. I don’t know, however, if it’s limited to places like Oriental, and nor do I see it as entirely and without question a terrible thing. People who intend to spend their lives together should have things in common, and like it or not, class is, and always has been, part of that, because it shapes the people that we are.

With Amanda and Dawson--and many others in the real world, of course--the class differences were less important than their similarities. Neither one of them got along with their parents, both were intelligent, both had dreams, and over the years, both of them had disappointments.

Q: Today, we can easily reconnect with people from our past via Facebook and other social networking sites. How often do you think people try to find their first love on these sites?

A: It’s very common. I know people who’ve reconnected with someone from their past then later married them, but that’s probably less common than simply reaching out via social media to an old boyfriend or girlfriend simply to find out what’s been going on in their lives. I can understand the draw: First love is powerful because it’s a first, and it’s almost impossible to forget.

Q: At the point when Amanda and Dawson reconnect, Amanda has been married almost twenty years and it’s clear she is having problems in her marriage. Having been married for 22 years yourself, what would you say is the key to a successful marriage?

A: For every couple, it’s different, because every couple faces different challenges, and every person has differing abilities when it comes to meeting those challenges. The key to any successful marriage is to realize that the commitment you once made to each other is the most important aspect to keep in mind. That simple truth, if truly felt, should be enough to make you realize that you can’t put that commitment at risk. If your partner feels the same way, he or she wouldn’t put that commitment at risk either.

At the same time, it’s important to understand that all marriages have challenging periods. No one is perfect, after all. But if the commitment to each other--which sometimes requires a commitment to change--is truly felt, then most likely, that marriage will be successful.

Q: This book has a large, spiritual component to it. Tuck sees Clara, his dead wife, and Dawson sees a man in a blue windbreaker, although he is not sure who he is and the reader does not find out until the end. Do you believe in ghosts?

A: I think I do. I had an experience much like the one Dawson described: at times, I could see unexplainable movement from the corners of my eyes. Quick, instantaneous movements that vanished before I could turn my head. If you talk to the owners of the house where those events occurred, they will swear it was a ghost. Other events occurred in that house as well before the “ghost”--or whatever it was--was finally exorcised from the premises. But that’s a longer story for another time.

Q: There is an absolutely stunning scene that unfolds when Amanda and Dawson go to Tuck’s country cottage for the first time. It’s very reminiscent of a scene that happens in The Notebook. Would you say this book, which examines young love versus middle age love, is the book closest in sentiment to The Notebook?

A: Without question, this is closest in sentiment--at least through the majority of the story – when compared to The Notebook. I wanted to do exactly that. At the same time, I wanted to make everything else about the story completely different as well, and I’m hopeful I did that as well.

Q: Tuck writes letters to Amanda and Dawson to be read after he is dead. They are wise and beautifully written. In this day and age of constant, electronic overload, do you lament the lost art of letter writing?

A: I do. I love letters as opposed to e-mail. But I’m old-fashioned that way.

Q: Warner Bros. has already bought the film rights to The Best of Me. You will be a producer on this film along with Denise DiNovi. How often is an author also a producer for the movie version of a book he/she has written? Is this unprecedented?

A: I’m sure other authors have served as a producer of their work; some have even directed. But it was somewhat unprecedented for Warner to agree to that – and purchase the novel--before I’d written a single page.

Q: Of all the movies based on your novels, which is your favorite?

A: I’ve been fortunate in that all the movies have been well-done and all have been successful, so I don’t have a personal favorite. I can say, however, is that, at the current time, The Notebook seems most likely to become a classic.

the best of me
By Alla S.
"The Best of me" by Nicholas Sparks follows the love story of Dawson Cole--a young man from a never do well family, who is sent to prison after he accidentally runs over the town's doctor, and upon release is nearly killed during an explosion in his new oil rig job--and Amanda Collier, his high school sweetheart who came from a wealthy family, and who, all those years later, is a married stay-at-home mom who occasionally ventures out to volunteer at the town's medical center.

The occasion for their union is the death of Tuck Hostetler, an elderly car mechanic who was their mutual friend and wished for them to scatter his ashes at a cottage owned by his ex-wife, the love of life who died before him, Clara. As Dawson and Amanda visit Tuck's estate and fulfill his wishes, they fall in love with each other all over again. But twenty years have passed, and Amanda's current married life and her mother's disapproval creates a huge obstacle.

But this is not the only problem Dawson faces. Elsewhere in town, his cousins Ted and Abee found out his back in town and want to plot their revenge for Dawson beating them up all these years ago. Not satisfied with a confrontation, Ted plots to murder Dawson. Meanwhile, Abee is caught up in a romance of his own--one that ultimately turns dangerous for all the participants involved.

My thoughts: as in many of Sparks' previous novels, this story is told from different points of view. This is an effective device that Sparks uses, letting the reader get intimately acquainted with all of the characters. Right off the bat, we know that Dawson wears his heart on his sleeve--and is a vulnerable character--weighted down by guilt, lost love, and loneliness. Amanda is less of a dreamer than Dawson--preferring to stay in the present, and deal with the cards she's been dealt. Ted and Abee are both emotionally unstable, violent characters who lack any sort of morality or practicality. And Tuck is a father-figure character, who is above any of the negative events taking place throughout the book, and more of a symbol of how the characters should have acted, but never did.

There's some paranormal elements to this story, but also a kind of nostalgic feel of lost time. You really root for Dawson and Amanda to get back together. But Sparks makes their relationship a mystery--up until the last third of the book. The conflicts created by the presence of Ted and Abee, Amanda's unpleasant mother, and Dawson's own demons are nicely incorporated into the plot. The ending is unpredictable, as the storylines of different characters are unexpectedly connected. The character who seemed so minor only a few pages ago, now has a major role in the story's outcome. And the story keeps you guessing until the last chapters.

The Best of Me is not his best
By Amber
I love Nicholas Sparks books, but lately have been disappointed. It is as if he has written every good plot he can think of so now, in desperation, turns to the cliches that are sure-fire tissue twisters. In Safe Haven, which I really did like because it was so different than his other books, Sparks added the element of suspense and a tiny bit of a ghost angle. Well, after experimenting with it and seeing it pleased his fans, he's gone all out with it in this book, landing a ghost as a secondary character and throwing in a couple of back hill goons with a love for their Glocks.

Here's the plot in a nutshell. Dawson Cole, the kid from the wrong side of the track and Amanda Collier, the rich pretty girl fall in love. Alas, their love is doomed, so they part ways, but this love was so very strong Dawson could never find it in him to love another and led a loner life. (I ask ... how many guys would go their ENTIRE lives without ever being with a woman or wanting a family, content to keep company with a memory?) Amanda though, has married a dentist who drinks too much and makes her miserable. She compares herself to an otter asleep on the side of his cage at the zoo, knowing this isn't the life she's supposed to live but with no way out. Even on her wedding day, she wished the poor man at the end of the aisle away, longing for Dawson.

The book begins with Dawson knowing that he should have died when the oil rig he worked on had an explosion. But instead, after he flopped in the water, this dark haired man in a wind breaker appears and Dawson swims towards him to safety. Suddenly this wind breaker guy is popping up here and there, sometimes just a flicker in the corner of his eye, but Dawson can never get a close look at him before he disappears. (That weird secondary character I mentioned earlier.)

An old man from his hometown dies and his attorney requests Dawson's presence. This old man, named Tuck, was a friend so he goes and, lo and behold, who else should the attorney have also called into town, but Amanda, who was also friends with Tuck. Now Tuck was a raging romantic and he'd planned before his death in great detail a fabulous, bring out the sex night away for these two at a little cottage set in paradise. (which brings to mind the already done Nights in Rodanthe.) I will leave you hanging so you can breathlessly turn pages to see if they give in to temptation. I thought this whole bit was cliched, due to the fact a thousand novels have been written about sisters, friends, mothers and daughters, and ex-lovers who are forced together due to a funeral. It's not exactly a surprise what happens.

While all of this romance and rediscovery is happening, there is the threat of some of Dawson's wrong side of the law cousins. (Sparks makes these guys like comic book villians with no real personalities.) Suddenly between these rough neck characters and another surprise event, the novel goes from the sinewy muscles of Dawson's arms' and the heat of his breath on her neck, to a breakneck switch that throws the readers out of their dreamy state into a bucket of cold water.

And then the end. Sparks does his best to make it a fine mix of happy slash sad. He always tries to get in those hankie moments and he really goes for broke with the last pages. One can see what's coming, and whether you're clinging to your tissue and saying, "Oh Sparks, you did it again," or "I can't believe it's come to this - a recycled tear jerker' - either way one must admire Nicholas Sparks. Many a woman would love a man who can think so romantic and put so much of his heart into words.

Or is it just that he has a formula for novels he knows will sell?

Either way, I will continue to read every novel Nicolas Sparks puts out there. There's always a hope the next one will be better and there have been some really great ones already written. Safe Haven is one of those and I can't wait until the movie comes out(mentioned in Acknowledgments).

In ending, read it because truly you can't go wrong with anything he writes but don't expect a novel that will knock you away with its fresh plot.

Wish I hadn't read it!
By lannie
I tremendously enjoy Spark's books so I wish I had not added this one to my collection to taint the mix. I considered giving this a single star but out of respect for the obviously talented author and the character development of Dawson & Amanda, I begrudgingly gave it two. I have read this book before. The characters have had different names and are set in different times and places and were written by different authors but this story line was hardly original which is unfortunate because the two main characters, along with Tuck were believable for the most part. I agree with another reviewer that Dawson's perpetual fidelity was poignant but unrealistic; reminds me of a sad country song. Shades of John Tyree's touching altruism were revisited (Dear John) but to a much more painful degree which left me wanting something entirely different from the way the last half of the story was written. I was a bit aggravated when I suspected where the story was headed and skipped ahead to confirm my suspicions which is something I rarely do. Incidentally, I hope future offerings from Sparks will avoid the magical, mysterious, paranormal characters that have been lurking in the periphery of some of his more recent books. I find them a little contrived and distracting. I do appreciate that Mr. Spark's books are character driven and that his stories focus on human emotions rather than dragging the readers through a mire of profanity and meaningless copulation that so many of this genre fall to. I am looking forward to his next book but this one just didn't do it for me.

This book follows almost word for word the 2000 year old man audio collection. I have been laughing with the 2000 year old man for 25 years and even my 15 year old son loves the Mel Brooks/Carl Reiner comedy exchange. This is a great intro for younger kids. If you like this, try the CD's, you'll laugh for hours (or years).
