"Kyla and Jefferson Blake count their sixteen years together as a wonderful blessing from God. Their marriage is passionate, their daughter is a joy, Jefferson's medical career is prospering, and they have loyal friends.

Kyla knows her newly divorced and lifelong friend, Jasmine, is desperately unhappy and no amount of prayer or encouragement seems to help. Yet what Kyla doesn't know is that Jasmine has a plan to move her life forward with the type of man she feels she should have married in the first place.

A man like Jefferson.

Alexis Ward, Kyla's best friend, is single and successful and willing to wait for the right man for all the right reasons. But when "Mr. Right," Dr. Brian Lewis, finally appears, she finds herself facing a new challenge. Does she really have to walk away from what she believes in order to have a man in her life?

As people who love God, Kyla, Jefferson, and Alexis discover, each in their own ways, what happens when they truly allow God to be first in their relationship.

Full of contemporary characters who struggle to keep their strength, friendships, and daily lives framed by the Word of God, Temptation is a novel no reader will soon forget."

Never Has Temptation Been So Sweet
By N. Black
I read this book about a year ago and loved it so much that I have quite a few of my friends now hooked on to Victoria Murray's books. Her characters are always engaging, relevant and real.

This story takes you inside the loving marriage of Kyla and Jefferson where its very foundation of love is tested by infidelity. However, what makes this story not just your run of the mill "he slept with her and now the wife is hurt and crying on the kitchen floor" is that the other woman is the wife's best friend, Jasmin, or so she thought. Jasmin is bent on ruining the wonderful life of Kyla since her own marriage has fallen apart and the life of wealth and comfort she envisioned never materialized. Now the story begins....

THE LOW DOWN...
Let me be straight with all of you this book is a page turner like a 'mug' (don't ask what that means). The characters were very believable. I mean I had to ask my husband if he knew anyone named Jasmine just to make sure. Kyla's pain was palpable. My heart ached for her with every line I read. I wanted to pimp slap Jefferson for cheating and I most definitely wanted to find the nearest mixed martial arts training studio so that I could beat down any chick named Jasmine. But fortunately, my husband reminded me that it was all just fiction, I'm a Christian and that perhaps I should put the book down for a while. Ofcourse that didn't happen.

Listen, if you want a great read this is the book for you. This was my first introduction to Ms. Victoria Murray and I have since bought all of the follow up books on her villainous character Jasmin and I must say it gets better every time.

Lead Us Not Into Temptation!
By claimingkin
When I discovered that TEMPTATION was a contemporary Christian novel, I was a little unsure if I would enjoy it. I guess I was expecting it to be more preachy than anything else. But what I found was a tender love story filled with God's words and the application of those words in the lives of some incredible characters.
When Kyla and Jefferson vowed on their wedding day before God and invited guests to forsake all others and keep only unto each other for as long as they both lived, they never thought that sexual temptation by a close friend would almost destroy their marriage and family. The close friend was none other than Kyla's devoted childhood buddy, Jasmine. Jasmine who felt unlucky at finding true love and happiness in her marriage to high school sweetheart, Kenneth Larson, finally accepts her divorce and sets her sights on the one man she feels can give her the life she so richly deserves -- Kyla's husband, Jefferson Blake.
It seems the only person who is aware of Jasmine's cruel intentions, was Kyla's best friend from college, Alexis Ward. Alexis, a beautiful and successful businesswoman, does everything humanly possible to keep Kyla and Jefferson together despite Jasmine's machinations. When Alexis was not caught up in the lives of her best friends she was battling some pretty strong temptations of her own. She has finally met the 'man of her dreams,' Dr. Brian Lewis. This man brought so much to her life. Still, she found herself facing one of the toughest challenges ever -- how to love, keep, and hold on to this man without compromising her faith and God's will for her life.
Victoria Christopher Murray writes a splendid novel that explores the challenges and victories married and dating singles face when they remain committed to God's word. I also believe she presents us with the fact that Christians are just as vulnerable to worldly temptations as the next person. But it is how they choose to handle those temptations that make all the difference in the world. So is this a book for everyone? Sure it is! It is a novel filled with all the ingredients that makes for an excellent read -- passion, betrayal, true friendship and most of all real love!

Better Than I Expected.....
By His-4-Ever
"Temptation" exceeded my expectations. I make that statement not to discredit the author in any way, however, I am just renewing my interest in fictional reading, and I had never heard of this author prior to searching Christian Fiction on Amazon. Following my discovery of this interesting synopsis, I decided to read this literary work and introduce it to my book club. Victoria Christopher Murray is an excellent author and this book kept me captivated from beginning to end. I love her method of incorporating scriptures and prayers to challenge the reader's thought process as the story develops. I am so glad that I found this author, I truly enjoy fiction novels, but most, in my opinion, are too racy for the Christian reader and leave your spirit man craving a fast to purify your mind of all the unwholesome thoughts encountered. I look forward to reading all of the literary works published by this author, including the sequels to "Temptation". "Temptation" is truly a story that all Christians can relate to regarding betrayal, forgiveness, and Thank God restoration.

Vinge returns to the worlds of her Hugo Award-winning The Snow Queen , blending complex characters and mythic resonances with the sweeping grandeur of an interplanetary saga.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
As the Summer Star ascends in the skies above the planet Tiamat, marking the end of more than a century of exploitation by the technologically advanced Hegemony, Moon Dawntreader--the Summer Queen appointed to lead her people back to their traditional ways--breaks with ancient custom, choosing instead to prepare to meet the Hegemony's inevitable return on equal terms. In this sequel to The Snow Queen (Dell, 1980), Vinge weaves a complex web of tangled love affairs, secret cabals, political intrigue, and high adventure centering around a unique woman and her visionary gift. The breadth and richness of this sf epic invite comparison with Frank Herbert's Dune and Isaac Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy." Although best read in tandem with its predecessor, this masterpiece of creative world-building is a priority purchase.
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
The long-awaited sequel to Vinge's enormous The Snow Queen (1980), an interstellar tug-of-war between the far-from-benevolent Hegemony and the backward-but-indispensable planet Tiamat. It is now Summer on Tiamat; the Hegemony has withdrawn, leaving the planet in the hands of the Snow Queen's clone, Moon. Numerous--too numerous--subplots get underway. Moon's former lover, BZ Gundhalinu, will be sent to World's End, where a wrecked Old Empire ship has spilled semi-sentient stardrive plasma; if Gundhalinu can control the plasma, faster-than-light travel will again be possible, ending Tiamat's periodic isolation. Elsewhere, Reede Kullervo, a researcher with a rebuilt brain, addicted to his own supercharging designer drug, will be ordered by the leader of the supercriminal Brotherhood to seek the immortality elixir whose only source is Tiamat. Meanwhile, Moon struggles to control Tiamat's rebellious factions, knowing that the planet's intelligent sea-dwelling ``mers'' are the source of the elixir, and that the ancient computer that links the galaxy's clairvoyant sibyls in an information network lies buried under Tiamat's chief city, Carbuncle; she dares not permit the Hegemony to control either the sibyl network or the elixir. Overcomplicated, as usual, with too many flabby patches, but much more rigorous and logical than its predecessor. Too, the pretentious allusions have been banished in favor of a welcome infusion of new ideas: all in all, an absorbing and satisfying performance. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Joan Loves her Characters
By Brian King
How you will feel about Summer Queen will depend on what you're looking for when you pick it up. I disagree with the last reviewer's doorstop comment. I feel that it's a bit unfair. I certainly agree that Snow Queen was a tighter work from an "action" perspective. However, I was never bored with the sequel. The pace just doesn't remain at breakneck throughout, and I suppose some people are only interested in that kind of pacing. While I was in the middle part, I kept thinking "Ah, the plot thickens." "Ooh, the plot thickens yet again." "Hmm, the plot is becoming molasses!" However, I was very excited for the last few hundred pages.
This book is more solidly about characters and their relationships than the universe in which it's set. People who prefer a "genre fiction" approach like Asimov's Foundation or Tolkien (where the world is the main character) will probably lose interest in Vinge's detailed character development. Science fiction is often disparaged for a lack of character development, so I applaud Vinge for tackling that stereotype. She also ventured into the still-risky topics of homosexuality and transgenderism.
I give Summer Queen a high rating. If you have a low attention span, then perhaps you shouldn't be reading books which are over 900 pages long!

An intimate epic
By L. McCall
This huge book is an intimate story built around big themes. Action fans, beware! Although there are generous servings of adventure and suspense, this is essentially a character-driven story, even more so than its marvelous predecessor, THE SNOW QUEEN.

At the heart of the story is the ancient, mysterious repository of the human knowledge gleaned from cultures past and present, worlds known and lost. Throughout history and across galaxies, the machine and its revered human conduit, the Sibyl Network, have been relied upon for answers to all manner of questions--trivial and profound, personal and technological. The Sibyl Mind binds humanity together. But it is showing signs of failure. To lose it would be to lose civilization. The task of saving civilization becomes entrusted not to warriors or superheroes, but to a small group of living, breathing people.

The Summer Queen, Moon, has learned that the machinery behind the Sibyl Mind resides on her undeveloped planet, Tiamat. She must find a way to protect and heal the Mind without exposing it. This is no mean feat for a country girl on a repressed world where ignorance and culture clashes have been encouraged by powerful offworlders to their own advantage. Moon grows up in a hurry. Her determination is unwavering, but the burden of her responsibilities puts a strain on her compassionate nature. For her, it isn't much fun being Queen!

Worlds away is BZ Gundhalinu, who, after many personal trials, has become a hero by restoring the means of faster-than-light travel to the empire-building Kharemoughis. Although relatively at peace with himself, he must walk a dangerous, duplicitous path if he is to shield his beloved Moon and her Tiamatans from the very exploitation that he has made possible.

On yet another planet is the third major player, a brilliant biochemist of unknown origin, Reede Kullervo. Kullervo's search for a moral core and sense of purpose is hampered by amnesia, a horrific drug addiction, and his indentured servitude to the lords of organized crime. Vinge effectively conveys the charisma behind his arrogance and dangerous volatility.

THE SUMMER QUEEN lacks THE SNOW QUEEN's tidy structure. Subplots and characters are widely scattered. Sometimes the story lingers in one setting, sometimes it leaps about more rapidly. As time goes on, the pace accelerates as the plots converge.

Most of the narrative takes place within the thoughts of the many characters, some familiar, some new. A couple of them seem to exist primarily to plug holes, and some are unrelentingly hissable, but the vast majority show great depth as they face complex political, social and personal dilemmas. There are no simple, permanent solutions, no actions without consequences. Perspectives and emotions shift during the two decade span of the book.

Much of the conflict arises between rival factions of the ancient, secretive, and manipulative society known as Survey. This device helps limit the conflict to a handful of known individuals. It also ties the story to the long lost past and the origins of the Sibyl Mind. But after a while it seems that everyone is a member, and Survey's pretentious attitude becomes more tiresome than interesting. (Fortunately, Moon agrees!)

Yes, the book is sprawling. But I regretted leaving the characters at the end of the book, and imagined them continuing their lives somewhere beyond my reach. I can't think of a greater compliment to an author's work.

More complex and haunting than its predecessor
By jessica j
I avoided reading this book because I feared that it, like the sequel to Dune, would not be as engaging as the original. How wrong I was! This book is better than the original, and since the original was a Hugo award winning classic, that is saying an awful lot. Moon's major quest is not just to recapture her lost lover; it is to save an entire race of intelligent sea creatures. And her adversary is not one woman, her genetic equal; it is the entire might of the Hegemony. As in the first, her undeniable pluck and good will help her overcome the most difficult obstacles only to find herself faced with more hardship, so much that your heart cries out to her and everyone around her.

As Moon has grown up, I think Vinge also has grown up. The relationships in this book are much more mature and complicated, and I was constantly reminded of true feelings in my own life as I read this book. I think Vinge also fell in love with BZ, because he becomes so much more dear in this book, so much more complete. There are flaws, of course. The first book was much tighter; Vinge is contantly re-iterating events from the past, particularly concerning BZ, extending the pages with excessive exposition. And it does not have the same "Ah-Ha!" revelation as the first one, as the story is pretty clear to the reader from the beginning. It more than makes up for it, though, in small surprises, in moments of beauty and tragedy that forced me to read the last 300 pages in a single day...

There is something about this book, something so much more than real, that makes it hard for me to stop thinking about it. I think what makes it so wonderful is that even though, in the end, Moon and her cause accomplish so much, they lose so much in the process. It is a bittersweet ending, both happy and sad, and there is nothing better.

Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend, by Robert James Waller

The author of the phenomenal New York Times bestseller The Bridges of Madison County once again brings characters and situations with his special blend of lyricism and magic. This is a bittersweet story about two good people who discover that true love, when it comes, is rarely fair, or right--or without pain.

From Publishers Weekly
Only little old ladies with blue permed hair need be wary of Waller's second foray into fiction: this time around, his saccharine tale of middle-aged lovers gets to sex scenes right away. When Michael Tillman, an Iowa economics professor with a rebel streak, first lays eyes on his colleague's wife, Jellie Branden, he immediately wonders "how it would feel to grab a big handful of her hair and bend her over the dean's kitchen table." A few pages later--still in the first chapter--he is fantasizing about stripping Jellie naked and flying to the Seychelles. Though it takes a while to consummate their passion, Jellie is an iconoclast too: like Mike, she smokes and wears jeans to faculty parties, and she is pretty good in the sex fantasy department herself. But Jellie has a Dark Secret (no surprise to the reader when it is revealed) and Michael must go tearing off to India to try to locate her when she runs away from Cedar Bend. Waller's attempt at academic satire is a dud, but he renders the Indian settings quite effectively. An encounter with a tiger is just the sort of sentimental flourish that fans of The Bridges of Madison County will get teary-eyed over; and there's even a coy reference to Robert Kincaid to evoke the earlier novel. To the main question--will this book please Waller's fans?--the answer is a resounding Yes. Movie rights to 20th Century Fox; BOMC main selection; QPB alternate; author tour.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Michael Tillman, a tenured economics professor enjoying his role of academic maverick, feels an immediate attraction to Jellie Braden when she walks into a dean's reception with her husband. Their common past experiences in India provide a basis for friendship, which develops into a spiritual link; Michael realizes that he has waited a lifetime to meet Jellie. Within a year, their love intensifies, and the affair is consummated. Yet there is much Michael doesn't know about Jellie, and her sudden, unannounced visit to India prompts his quest for the secret of her past. The surreal-man-and-married-woman love affair is reminiscent of the author's current bestseller, The Bridges of Madison County ( LJ 3/1/92), but Waller economically imbues his plot and characters with life's truths in a manner many will find enthralling. Recommended for most collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 7/93.
- Kimberly Martin, Washington Univ. Law Lib., St. Louis
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Michael Tillman is a rather conventionally unconventional economics professor in Cedar Bend (modeled on Cedar Falls?), Iowa. He rides around on a vintage motorcycle and avoids affairs with co-eds. He avoids affairs with everyone, in fact, until he locks eyes with Jellie Braden, wife of the new professor in town, a plodding, decent sort whom Jellie married at a time when she needed to calm her turbulent life. Yes, she's a woman with a past. Michael and Jellie struggle nobly to stay out of bed, and fail, but this is their destiny, after all. Still, the new love is so overwhelming and confusing for Jellie that she heads off to India, where she confronts her complicated past. Her husband, a practical man, takes the blow passively, but romantic Michael cuts his classes short and tracks Jellie to a remote hotel. With a glitch or two, the two live happily ever after. Just a formula romance, but Waller delivers it in sophisticated fashion, with a sustained, gentle satire of academia and an entertaining trek through India. His send-up of campus sexual politics is quite amusing. And he has a gift for quick characterizations, describing one Indian woman's beautiful face as enough "to launch a thousand Porsches back in the States." Waller may shortly have two entries on the best-seller lists, this one nuzzling cozily alongside The Bridges of Madison County. John Mort

Read It Twice
By Steve Marson
I saw Robert Walker interviewed on a Sunday news program immediately following the publication of the now famous THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. His narrative describing the emergence of the novel fascinated me. He spoke as if the characters were somehow inside him crying for their story to be told. I had to read this book. Next thing I knew, BRIDGES made the best sellers list. This was in the early 90's. The book became a common topic of conversation among my friends. In fact, one friend and I spoke of the book a great deal. It is a book to make one think and discuss.
A year or so later, I came across SLOW WALTZ IN CEDAR BEND - quite by accident. When I made the connection with THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, I immediately purchased the book, read it, then shared it with my friend with whom I had long discussions about Walker's first novel. Frankly, I liked SLOW WALTZ IN CEDAR BEND much better than THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. I remember seeing myself in the main character. This character, Michael Tillman, mesmerized me.
Twelve years later, I was looking for a book on tape to keep me company on a long lonely drive, I bought SLOW WALTZ IN CEDAR BEND forgetting that I read the novel 12 years earlier. During the second reading (or listening), I found that I enjoyed the author's writing and his imagery, but didn't find any connection between the main character and me. In fact, I didn't realize that I had read this novel before until I got to the part where Michael Tillman finds Jellie Braden on an Island in India. Reading this book for a second time was a fascinating experience. I continued to enjoy Walker's writing style, but the novel had a much different emotional impact on me. I suspect that my two experiences were the result of the author's crafty skill with the written word.
For those, who read SLOW WALTZ IN CEDAR BEND when it first some out, I recommend to read it again. In fact, I think I'll listen to it on my next trip.

I have a copy in every room
By Mark Wheeler
Quite literally yes! I do have a copy in every room. There are certain passges that I love to re-read again. The moment in Beanos and the respectful waitress turning the volume up so an intimate conversation between Michael Tillman and Jahlay can ensue. The Thanksgiving Dinner at The Bradens where you feel you are in the room with the characters witnessing a potential affair develop between them both but, somehow, you feel you are the only one who sees it. There are so many passages that I love about this book that, by their very power, they could be miniature essays in their own right. The fact that they all come together to make an all-round belter of a romantic novel makes the book a classic in my opinion. If Zen and the Art.... Catch 22...The Catcher in the Rye...are books you feel you should have due to popular opinion, then listen to me and buy this as it is in a class of its own in this genre.

Beautiful and very sensitive middle-age love story
By A Customer
I liked the book from the very beginning, reading it in one "shot". It is an excellent love story, very sensitive, with beautiful descriptions of the characters and events. The campus-life descriptions bring many memories, and the love scenarios are touching. The two parallel lives of Jellie Braden are beautifuly described, and Mikel is a real "character" (maybe like the author...?, definitely like his "budy"/"prototype" Robert Kincaid). I liked the flow of events, the jump between present and past, the description of life in a small campus-town, the life in India, and especially the love-related events. I liked the description of the "ever increasing" relationships between the two main souls - Jellie and Mikel, especially the "swans in the pool" scenario and the follow-up....where the "slow waltz" is becoming a real love.
But, I felt that the author went "one bridge too far", with the end of the book. It could have as well been finished one chapter "earlier", after Jellie and Mikel were re-united in India.
I enjoyed reading the book, and definitely rate it as one of the good ones I ever read.

End the Fed, by Ron Paul

In the post-meltdown world, it is irresponsible, ineffective, and ultimately useless to have a serious economic debate without considering and challenging the role of the Federal Reserve.

Most people think of the Fed as an indispensable institution without which the country's economy could not properly function. But in END THE FED, Ron Paul draws on American history, economics, and fascinating stories from his own long political life to argue that the Fed is both corrupt and unconstitutional. It is inflating currency today at nearly a Weimar or Zimbabwe level, a practice that threatens to put us into an inflationary depression where $100 bills are worthless. What most people don't realize is that the Fed -- created by the Morgans and Rockefellers at a private club off the coast of Georgia -- is actually working against their own personal interests. Congressman Paul's urgent appeal to all citizens and officials tells us where we went wrong and what we need to do fix America's economic policy for future generations.

From Publishers Weekly
At first glance, abolishing the Federal Reserve and returning to the gold standard seems a quaintly eccentric idea, but Texas congressman Paul presents a plan to eliminate our country's central bank, and return to a private banking system, that's both serious and plausible. The questionable aspects involve Paul's predicted results: not only will ending the Fed eliminate inflation (the government cannot print more money than it has gold reserves), but also business booms and busts, wars, income inequality, trade imbalances and the growth of government. Further, and perhaps most important, it would "disempower the secretive cartel of powerful money managers who exercise disproportionate influence over the conduct of public policy." Paul tends to gloss over those periods in history, including the Panic of 1907, in which private banking and the gold standard were law: "the bad reputation of nineteenth century American banking... is largely the result of... propaganda agitating for the creation of the Fed." With respect to "secretive cartels," Paul takes up the interesting question of whether J.P. Morgan is in fact preferable to Ben Bernanke. An engaging response to big-government solutions for the financial crisis, this knowledgeable and opinionated look at U.S. economics, from a firebrand public servant, should provoke much thought.

"Rarely has a single book not only challenged, but decisively changed my mind. "
--Arlo Guthrie

"Everyone must read this book--Congressmen and college students, Democrats and Republicans--all Americans."
--Vince Vaughn

About the Author
Ron Paul, an eleven-term congressman from Texas, is the leading advocate of freedom in our nation's capital. He has devoted his political career to the defense of individual liberty, sound money, and a non-interventionist foreign policy. Judge Andrew Napolitano calls him "the Thomas Jefferson of our day."

After serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s, Dr. Paul moved to Texas to begin a civilian medical practice, delivering over four thousand babies in his career as an obstetrician. He served in Congress from 1976 to 1984, and again from 1996 to the present. He and Carol Paul, his wife of fifty-one years, have five children, eighteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Ron Paul, the New York Post once wrote, is a politician who "cannot be bought by special interests."

"There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles," added a congressional colleague. "Ron Paul is one of those few."

With this Ron Paul captured my imagination (at the time anyway) - updated on Feb. 11, 2014
By Afia
February 11, 2014 Update:
My in-person discussions with many people make me believe this book's title is well-known while the content is practically unknown.
This book has nothing to do with whether the Fed should ease or restrict monetary supply. At its heart the book questions our government's balance of power and holds that a group of bankers is too dominating. Meanwhile the political activities of Ron Paul and Rand Paul have often confused me and I cannot connect a lot of their positions with this book.
(end of update)
.....

Paul's book is a polemic that makes certain statements. For example, "The Fed is run by creditors." This book discusses several consequences of the Federal Reserve System, many unintended and unforeseen. End the Fed is Paul's story of how the country ended up with a lot of debt not necessarily through informed choices but because of our money system.

(Recommended reading: Declare Independence from Party Affiliation)

Ron Paul introduced H.R. 833 to abolish the Federal Reserve System.

The main counter argument to ending the Fed is that it would be a terrible mistake to give total money power to elected officials. The late Milton Friedman offered an alternative to the current system which "might" satisfy a broader constituency.

Friedman thought U.S. Notes could work if they were printed only to match population increase or else align increases of money supply to a price index. The system that Friedman talked about would leave physical money creation independent of political control IF it could be implemented. Currently, physical money is created through Treasury debt. When a dollar is created, it's an asset and also a liability that generates interest.

Friedman acknowledged that it may not be politically possible to take money power away from the Fed. Even after reading this book, I think Friedman was correct.

Ron Paul Hits a Homerun
By L. H. Rockwell, Jr.
Andrew Jackson ended his Fed in 1836. Ron Paul can do the same for us, if we make it possible. Read this book and work to end the central economic and political evil in America, the central bank that fuels recessions and depressions, the warfare state, the redistributionist state, and the police state. End the Fed!

Economics 101
By Bob Akimbo
Finally, a no-holds-barred, plain English explanation of the "Crime of the Century." Dr. Paul explains very clearly how the Federal Reserve has not helped our economy, but has virtually destroyed it. It's so clear, in fact, that maybe even our Congressmen and Senators will finally get it.

Economics 101: When you create more of something, the value decreases.

Economics 201: The Federal Reserve printing (Liquidity Injections) of Federal Reserve Notes (Dollars) has decreased their value.

Economics 301: The dramatic increase of Federal Reserve money printing in the last couple of decades has devalued our money and caused the current economic crisis.

Economics 401: The Fed is trying to solve the problem with more of the same thing that caused the problem.

Of course it's more complicated than this, and that's where this book is so important. Dr. Paul explains the history of the Fed, its relationship to modern wars and a myriad of other societal ills, the inevitable failure of a fiat currency and, more importantly, how we can get out of this mess.

The Federal Reserve system is nothing less than the most brilliant tool ever for the transfer of wealth and power from the average citizen to the wealthy and powerful, and we must rein it in to preserve our freedom. I know I must sound dramatic, but I can not stress enough the importance of honest, realistic, economic education. This book is a great first step. It should be required reading in all our schools.

Amazon.com Review
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago.

In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look.

From Library Journal
"Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle." In today's service business, author Beckwith suggests this old marketing adage is likely to guarantee failure. In this timely addition to the management genre, Beckwith summarizes key points about selling services learned from experience with his own advertising and marketing firm and when he worked with Fortune 500 companies. The focus here is on the core of service marketing: improving the service, which no amount of clever marketing can make up for if not accomplished. Other key concepts emphasize listening to the customer, selling the long-term relationship, identifying what a business is really selling, recognizing clues about a business that may be conveyed to customers, focusing on the single most important message about the business, and other practical strategies relevant to any service business. Actor Jeffrey Jones's narration professionally conveys these excellent ideas appropriate for public libraries.?Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Advertising professional Beckwith startles and disarms all potential doubting Thomases with one fact--that by the year 2005, 8 out of 10 Americans will be working in a service business. Chapters here are remarkably short; they are intended to convey one point (summarized in one sentence in boldface italics) and are blessedly free of jargon. Hints and tips cover the conventional four Ps of marketing--product, promotion, place, and price--in an irreverent and iconoclastic manner; nothing is sacrosanct. Stories from every corner of life illustrate and drive home messages. In a quandary about pricing? Read the Picasso story to remember, "Don't charge by the hour; charge by the years." About the value of research? Forget questionnaires and focus groups; instead, ask individuals what improvements are needed--not the dreaded "What don't you like?" A very human, much-needed book to savor and be refreshed by. Barbara Jacobs

Become Visibile with a not so Visible Service
By M. Bennett
There are several hundred books available on the market about selling. Most of these books are based on tangible products, something the consumer can see, feel and recieve an almost immediate satisfaction after the purchase.
This books is one of the few available about selling services. When a consumer purchases a service from you or your company, they are paying for your promise to deliver someting in the future. This is especially true in the world of finance and insurance industry. A financial advisor sells a fund and the buyer expects to recieve x amount of interest on his in vestment at a later date. In the insurance industry, a client buys an automobile insurance policy but will probably never see the benefits of the sinsurance policy until he or she has an accident. How do you sell something that has no immediate benefit to the client? Read "Selling the Invisible".
There are twelve very easy to read chapters with many short examples (lacking a little bit on the proof side). I do believe it is an excellent book but it is too North American oriented to be carried over one to one for european, asian or middle-eastern markets. There will have to be a few cosmetic adjsutments made to be able to adapt to other makets but it is still a catalyst to start doing things differently.
The chapters and some of the main messages of those I recieved from the author Harry Beckwith:
Planning - 1.) Accept the limititations of planning 2.) Don't value planning for its result;the plan 3.)Don't plan your future plan your people. 4.)Do it now. The business obituary pages are filled with planners who waited. 5.)Beware of focus groups; they focus on today and planning is about tomorrow. 6.)Don't let the perfect ruin good. 7.)Don't look to experts for all your answers. Ther are no answers, only informed opinions.
How Prospects Think - 1.) Appeal only to a prospects reason, and you may have no appeal at all 2.) Familiarity breeds business; spread your word however you can. 3.)Take advantage of the recovery effect. Follow-up brilliantly.
Pointing and Focus - 1.)Stand for one distinctive thing that will give you a competative edge. 2.)To broaden your appeal, narrow your position. 3.)No company can position itself as anything, your prospects and customers put you there. Positioning is something the market does to you. You can only try and influence your position. 4.) Your position is all in the peoples minds. Find out what that position is. 5.)Focus. In everything from campaign for peanuts to campaign for presidents, focus wins.
Pricing - 1.)Don't assume that logical pricing is smart pricing. Maybe your price which makes you look like a good value, actually makes you look second rate. 2.)Setting your price is like setting a screw. A little resistance is a good sign. The reason 10% of the population are chronic complainers of price. 3.)Beware of the deadly middle in pricing. You communicate that as well... We are average. 4.)Beware of the rock bottom in pricing...you communicate we are substandard. 5.)Value is not a position.
Naming and Branding - 1.)Give your service a name, not an abbreviation 2.)Generic names encourage generic business. 3.)In service marketing almost nothing beats a brand. 4.)Building a brand doesn't take millions. It takes imagination.
Communicating and Selling - 1.)Make the service and the prospect feel compfortable 2.)Saying many things usually communicats nothing. 3.)Good basic communicating is good basic marketing. 4.)If you think your promotional idea might seem silly or unprofessional, it is. 5.)Prospects do not buy how good you are at what you do. They buy how good you are at who you are. 6.)Far better to say to little than too much. 7.)People hear what they see. Watch what you show. 8.)Give your marketing a human face.
Nurturing and Keeping Clients - 1.) Watch your relationship balance sheet, assume it is worse than it appears and fix it. 2.)Don't raise expectations you cannot meet. 3.)To manage satisfaction, you manage your customers expectations. 4.)Out of sight is out of mind. If you are not meeting regularly, you are not in their mind.
Overall an excellent book that contains a lot of reasons as to why service marketing is different and how to keep yourself visible amongst the competition.

Digestible Insights
By Michael L. Perla
As others have written, this book is not about creating a complex marketing design or plan. What it does offer is quick, a page or so, USA today-like snippets of insightful observations about marketing in general, and service marketing in particular.
As the title indicates, selling and/or marketing an intangible service is a different process than tangible product marketing. As the author writes, most people cannot evaluate the skills of an accountant, or lawyer, or any number of professional services. We often look for tangible proxies that indicate the professional's level of expertise and success (e.g., fancy offices, degrees on the wall, presentation, etc.).
If you read this book in its entirety in one session, you are bound to remember nothing in the sea of facts and tidbits (click on the table of contents link to get a feel for the topic areas). I've found the best way to read the book is to ponder on a few points every night and/or week, while attempting to apply them to a salient situation in your life. Overall, this book has some interesting and useful insights, and is a good read when you have a few minutes to spare.

Worth the price for 1.5 pages rated below
By S. Hall
It's a good read, but there is a page and half that has had a major impact, showing me where I have a huge blindspot in business and how I stop my own progress. This page and a half is possibly the most important material I've read in a book in several years (for me it applies directly).

The author talks about the Fallacy of Planning in a business setting. He ranks plans in this order:

1. Very Good
2. Good
3. Best
4. Fair
5. Poor

Why is Good ahead of Best? Simple, to arrive at Best takes orders of magnitude more planning than Good. Also, who defines Best? How much time is spent creating the Best plan? Will Best stand the test of time? Can everyone agree on Best? Would Good work just as well as Best in the real world? Is Best satisfying the client's need better than a Good plan?

Choosing the "Best" plan leads to Paralysis by Analysis. Good plans allow for quick action and constant improvement. The most successful people in the world have acted on Good plans that they have refined over time. An actionable plan is more successful than a plan that never leaves the drawing board!

Personally, I've fallen into the Best trap many times. There is no such thing as a "Best" plan. Going forward the "Best" plan will be the "Good" plan that I can put into action and refine over time!

A lightbulb went off in my head when I got this concept. Thank you Harry for this valuable lesson.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1991, Broome's son Jack left for Cate, a California prep school he attended in hopes of getting into a prestigious college. Father and son had an especially close relationship, because Jack had been living with Broome for the four years since his parents' divorce. To maintain their connection, Broome wrote his son frequently, and these letters, though of limited interest, testify to his love for Jack. Much of the correspondence deals with values Broome considers important and would like to inculcate in his son, such as integrity, hard work and leadership. He also wants Jack to adhere to his conservative political opinions, and he has written several letters that strike a discordant note as nothing but diatribes against Democratic presidents, unions, communists and social welfare programs. Other letters express nagging concern about Jack's grades and Broome's apparently unfounded worry that his son will drink too much. Broome was recently injured by a drunk driver in a car crash, and included here is an essay Jack wrote about his father's accident.

Words of Wisdom from a fathers' heart
By Faith Ratliff
An excellent book, one of which taught morals, values, and guidence for a young man away from home. Once i picked up the book and started reading it, I couldn't put it down, eagerly anticipating what the next letter written to his son, Jack, might entail. John Broome instilled into his son, in the form of letters, what he would have taught him at home, were he there and not in boarding school.Excellent portrayal of the love of a father--only wanting the best for his son.

The truth is fascinating
By Chris Crouch
I have been around "successful people" all my life who seemed to be extremely unhappy with their situation. Outwardly they often project the image that their life is great; however, when you get to know them better and they let their guard down; they turn out to be some of the most restless people on the planet. They focus on possessions, titles, activities, etc. and lose sight of what really results in peace of mind and contentment. As Ms. Halpers stated in her book...they use external yardsticks to measure success, pass out scorecards to everyone but themselves and live their life for everyone else. They also use arrogance to cover up insecurities. I think this book does a great job of explaining some of the reasons why successful men get caught in this trap. This book can save people many years of frustration. Why not read about what others discovered after years of trying things that do not result in true success and minimize the amount of time you spend on a "path to nowhere?"
I always like to learn in a few minutes what it took others years to realize. This is a great source for understanding issues that will help you get on a more meaningful path in life.
This book offers rat race participants a lot fo "food for thought." I'm glad Ms. Halper shared her interesting thoughts with me in this book.

From Library Journal
Cole's performance enhances her refreshingly honest and candid autobiography. Although she is the daughter of legendary singer Nat "King" Cole, she has been no stranger to adversity, both in her career and personal life. The title of her memoir reflects the pop singer's strong religious beliefs; she is certain that, several times in her life, it was only the intervention of angels that saved her. Frankly describing her devastating addiction to drugs, Cole assumes full responsibility for her past mistakes and could certainly serve as an inspiration to others facing the same terrible struggle. She is also open about domestic troubles including her marital problems and love-hate relationship with her mother. This substantial account of Cole's life and Grammy Award-winning career also offers interesting glimpses into the inner workings of the pop music industry. Highly recommended for all music and biography collections.DBeth Farrell, Portage Cty. Dist. Lib., OH

From Booklist
Songstress Cole's as-told-to autobiography opens with the harrowing tale of how she and her bodyguard nearly were killed in a hotel fire. As it happens, she had just "made a bargain with the Lord." If the deity let her take a hit of freebase as the room filled with smoke, "then that means I'm finished. I'm going to get high, and then I'm going to die." Fortunately, the Lord acted swiftly. As Cole readied the pipe, "the door was blown off its hinges" by "twin angel Gabriels," who turned out to be firefighters. The singer was saved! And her life changed. Besides that amazing grace, Cole mentions her famous father--one of her abiding companions--early and often, so that Nat Cole, God, and the music she considers a gift from them both could be said to dominate her life. Thoughtfully, she recalls her childhood, recounts the legal battle between her mother and her and her siblings over her father's estate, and relates the erratic behavior of an aging Frank Sinatra, whom she felt had transferred his affection for her father to her. Although she concentrates mostly on the good times, Cole isn't shy about the bad times, which makes this intriguing, engaging, and inspirational life story worthy of attention. Mike Tribby

Captivating, Intriguing, and Honest.

I truly enjoyed reading Natalie Cole "Angel On My Shoulder: An Autobiography". Although Natalie had many obstacles to overcome she had a very privileged life. She talked very candidly about her relationship with her mother and siblings. I felt sad reading that Natalie's mother was not a nurturing , supportive person when Natalie really needed her. However, I was elated to read how Natalie overcome all the hurdles in her path and turned her life around to be a more productive person. This book is one of encouragement for people with addictions who think there is no hope. I highly recommend this book.

Angel On My Shoulder by Natalie Cole
By "My Girl"
The delivery was surprisingly fast-- thank you. However, even though the pages of the book are a bit yellowed, overall it was delivered in good condition. And although a sometimes painful read, Natalie's personal struggles are truly inspirational-- a very touching story from one of the greatest Jazz voices of our time. Good reading.

TRULY "UNFORGETTABLE"
By Sandra D. Peters
It must have been extremely difficult for a Natalie as a young person to ever envision filling the shoes of her infamous father. One of the most outstanding features of this book is Natalie's strength and determination to take responsibilities for her own actions and mistakes, as opposed to passing them on to someone else. Her life has been anything but a bowl of cherries, but the lessons learned have hit hard and one can see their are telltale signs of scars that still remain. As for Natalie's comments about praying over a homeless person and the next day concluding he had become an angel, she may very well have reached the right conclusion. As a street counsellor in a major city for many years, I came across many homeless people who overnight did depart from this Earth, and hopefully with all their trials and tribulations, some Higher Power did see fit to give them angel's wings. Just because one has not had the opportunity to live with dignity does not mean they do not deserve peace when they pass on. Most homeless people are not there by choice and it was never one of their long-term goals as a child to end up on the street. Circumstance and opportunity play a major role.
The religious aspect Natalie brings to her life by venturing to say "God has chosen her for a special mission" so that she can inspire may well be what has given her the strength to heal and survive. Whether, in fact, God did have a mission for her is not for any of us to judge; the fact that this belief has allowed Natalie to heal and become whole is the important consideration.
There have been many television interviews with Natalie but none brings about so much emotion as this book. Natalie is not much different from the rest of us, she has had some very bright spots in her journey, but she has also had her share of sorrow, obstacles and challenges. The book is certainly interesting and enlightening, and her talent is unquestionable. As far as talent, she can indeed match her father's shoes any day!
