This time around Matthew Hope finds himself in southern Florida and in a mess. A woman he's representing is suing a toy manufacturer she says stole her idea. The problem is, the president of the toy company was murdered, and guess who's the prime suspect? The other problem--or problems--is that Hope's primary private investigator winds up on a boat kidnapped by drug runners leaving Hope, who is still smarting from gunshot wounds he collected in other adventures, to contact by himself the subjects for the investigation, all of whom reside on boats. Got that? He does get some help, in the form of an old-school PI named Guthrie Lamb, who throws in his techniques to try to crack this rather nutty case.

Hero/narrator Matthew Hope, recovered from gunshots and a coma (There Was a Little Girl, 1994) and, true to his earlier resolve, practicing only civil law in (fictional) Calusa, Fla., represents the plaintiff in a suit involving the eponymous teddy bear, named after a mis-heard line in a hymn ("Gladly the cross I'd bear"). Young toy designer Lainie Commins is suing her ex-boss, toy manufacturer Brett Toland, for copyright and patent infringement, contending that his cross-eyed bear is a direct steal from hers. When Brett is found shot to death on his yacht, Lainie is arrested and charged with murder. She persuades Hope to represent her even as, we later learn, she commits the first legal sin, lying to her lawyer. From mansions to shacks and yacht club to sleazy venues for lingerie "models," McBain gives us a tour of Gulf Coast Florida that's seldom grand. Unable to reach his usual investigators (the main subplot has PI Warren Chambers urging his colleague Toots Kiley to kick her crack cocaine habit cold turkey), Hope hires 60-something Guthrie Lamb, an old-style PI with major male chauvinist traits. McBain, as he has for more than 40 years, keeps his readers riveted through this entire, satisfying tale.

Lainie Commins is a cross-eyed toy designer who appears to have struck it rich with a cross-eyed teddy bear she calls Gladly. Two major toy companies are bidding big bucks for the bear, but Commins' former employer, Toyland, is suing the designer, claiming she designed Gladly while on their payroll. Commins hires Florida lawyer Matthew Hope, recently recovered from a bullet-induced coma (There Was a Little Girl, 1994), to plead her case. Meanwhile, someone murders Toyland honcho Brett Toland, and Commins becomes the top suspect. Soon Hope has a murder case on his hands and is forced to construct an elaborate, Simpson-like timeline defense. Though the Matthew Hope novels still play second fiddle in most readers' minds to the author's more-celebrated 87th Precinct tales, this "other" McBain series has developed a devoted audience. Fans will be ecstatic to see that Hope survived his coma--it wasn't a sure thing at the conclusion of Little Girlbut they may find themselves a bit disappointed with this slightly tepid effort. There's nothing wrong with the book exactly, but it lacks the emotional intensity of its predecessor. More Carefully Written Than 87th Precinct Books

I enjoyed reading this book. I am pretty sure that McBain takes more time writing his Hope series. There's liitle of the flippant dialogue and other narrative devices that often mar the putative reality of the 87th books. McBain's novel (not McBain necessarily) wants you to examine the complexities of human beings--in this novel: Hope, Laine--both in some depth. But all characters invite consideration and really seem to blend seamlessly into the narrative (e.g. Guthrie, Diaz, and Tootsie). The casual connection between pornography and a unique children's teddy bear merits a second (third) look. Characters in this book are generally not nice, but are a mix of good and bad, right and wrong. Many readers will pooh-pooh the secondary plot with Warren and Tootsie, but it is in this world (the boat out on the open sea is a microcosm of our world) that seems so surreal, but really is "life-lived" and the "thing itself" that
we glimpse a human being staring intently at evil (crack and/or cocaine) and saying "you aren't going to beat us this time" He stands strong, helps his addicted friend and gave me some hope that good still may triumph, at least aspirationally, in this world, where my 50 plus years on earth has seen a lot of nastiness, betrayal and other unalloyed forms of evil. But a little good along the way. I read Money, Money, Money just before this one. I enjoyed it, but Gladly has legitimate edginess (not too overdone for a novel) and a kind of crunchy soulfulness that makes you applaud what Etta did to her husband. Again right over wrong; good over evil. Money also had its virtues but was too jauntily frivilous about certain things (lion) and maudlin about human relations: Carrella, mother and wife. My first Hope book; hope others are as good. Oh, I almost forgot. McBain's handling of Hope's coma was excellent and was wrapped up beautifully (understated and clever)at the end of the book. I have read 9 McBain books; Gladly (and just a little of Vespers) is the only one where when I finished the book, I said a little prayer and reached for Yeats's poems. WEll Done.

A teddy bear murder

Still recovering from a near-fatal shooting in his previous outing ("There Was A Little Girl"), Calusa, Florida, lawyer Matthew Hope finds a trademark case escalating into murder.

The eponymous bear is the creation of his toy-designer client, Lainie Commins, whose former employers, Etta and Brett Toland, have produced a similar cuddly toy and are about to destroy her big chance with their greater market clout.

Naturally, when Brett is found murdered aboard his boat, with plenty of witnesses attesting to Lainie's presence, and her scarf found near the nude body, she is the prime suspect.

Matthew's investigation proves increasingly damaging to Lainie, whose story changes with every telling. Meanwhile, Matthew's cohorts, Warren Chambers and Toots Kiley, in an entirely seperate subplot, are engaged in a drug battle on a drifting boat.

McBain's laconic, mannered prose lends a familiar rythm to this well-paced story laced with moral ambiguities, some of which are Matthew's own.

Kellerman may be best known for her Rina Lazarus-Peter Decker mysteries, but she's also written numerous short stories, 18 of which are collected in this rather varied anthology. Not all of the stories fall within Kellerman's usual crime beat. "Luck of the Draw," for example, a collaboration between Kellerman and her daughters (at the time, 11 and 15), is a pleasant tale in which a sudden windfall causes a close-knit family to reassess its economic priorities. On the other hand, "Mummy and Jack," which Kellerman wrote with her author-playwright son, Jesse, is a dark psychological thriller. Rina and Peter appear in several stories, and Kellerman includes a tale starring one of her first PI characters, Andrea Darling. Greed, dashed hopes, and boredom, occasionally leavened with a touch of humor, are the stuff of many others. A brief note about how each selection came to be heads each tale. Stephanie Zvirin

The Big Question: How Much Of A Kellerman Fan Are You?

Not everything written by well-established authors should be published. Never was this truer than when Stephen King came out with From A Buick 8 and the coauthored Colorado Kid.

Faye Kellerman has been delighting readers with her Decker/Lazzarus crime fiction novels for many years now, and most will probably snap up The Garden of Eden and Other Criminal Delights, a mish-mash collection of short stories (and a few inspired by and coauthored with some of Kellerman's close family members).

Short story fans will be as equally delighted and chagrined as Kellerman's fan-base, as this collection runs from quite good to downright terrible. The most notable are the final two stories, "Mummy and Jack" and "Holy Water."

"Mummy and Jack" was a coauthored piece with Kellerman's older son Jesse. Wickedly dark in tone, the story takes the Oedipus complex a bit over the edge and plops us uncomfortably in the middle of adult son Jack's desire to please his mother by any means necessary ...including killing.

"Holy Water," the longest story in the collection, is a hilarious romp via a Rabbi who's hijacked by some prosperous thugs that demand the formula for a rival cola company's soda. Since the Rabbi confirmed the ingredients for kosher reasons, he's on their list of men whom they need to "talk to." But the Rabbi is smarter than the thugs and twists their plans until even the bad guys come around to his way of thinking.

But from here the stories take a serious nosedive. Several of the Decker/Lazzarus stories fall flat or conclude in very ho-hum fashion. One story that focuses on Decker and his now grown daughter who's entering the police field, goes absolutely nowhere while trying to show the strains of the father/daughter relationship during an accidental shooting. Two stories were cowritten by Kellerman's other children and they read, unfortunately, more like poorly put together streams of consciousness.

If it weren't for "Holy Water" and "Mummy and Jack," this collection would be easily forgettable. But the big question: Is it worth the price of purchase just for those two stories? That probably depends on how much of a Faye Kellerman fan you are.

I loved this book!

She's Gone Country by Jane Porter is so relaxing and enjoyable to read it was like putting on a pair of old, soft jeans and your favorite t-shirt. This book is sort of mommy lit but foretells an empty nest coming and a bit of a middle age crisis.

Shey Lynne Darcy's husband just left her for a man. They had been married for around 16 years. She has been living in New York City but decides to go back home. She took her three sons, Bo, Hank and Cooper to the ranch where she grew up in Parkfield, Texas. Even though, she could stay and support herself and the boys with her income as well known fashion model but she feels that she isn't herself any more.

She has a lot to deal with including the fact that her son, Bo, seems to be following in her brother Cody's footsteps. Cody may have been manic depressive but died before he could steer away from substance dependence. Now Bo seems to be depressed a lot lately. Her son, Hank, doesn't like the schools in Texas and would rather stay with her estranged husband so he could go to one of the best schools in the East. Lastly, Cooper, the youngest feel that he is a looser at everything including fistfights; he loves the ranch and wants to be a cowboy.

On top of this, her old boyfriend, Dane Kelley, a rodeo champ is still in the area. Her parents sent her away to boarding school when she was young so she would be away from him. Shey wants to feel more comfortable in her life. She wants to be herself, to be happier than she has been and she had been missing the ranch for so long.

This page turning story gets you interested from the first page and you don't want to read the last page because that will be all there is. This story has humor, wit, romance, emotional turmoil and some peaceful times.

I highly recommend this book to women who have or have had teen aged sons and/or a broken marriage.

Not as good as Mrs. Perfect

Though I enjoyed this book more than Easy on the Eyes, I found that it did not live up to Mrs. Perfect.

I really did not enjoy Easy on the Eyes, I felt that the main character spent much of her time complaining and whining about her looks (I actually could not finish it, it was too grating on the nerves) I really enjoyed Mrs. Perfect. I liked the way the main character grew with her problems and learned to overcome them.

The main character of She's Gone Country seemed to get the easy way out. All of her problems disappeared. Lulu magically got another boyfriend, the intruder left and never returned and her son was cured. Eventually Shey's life became simplified by her getting pregnant, married and living happily ever after.

I would really like to go back to Bellevue and meet up with Marta and Taylor again. I felt that both Odd Mom Out and Mrs. Perfect delt with real life situations of women who live and work in suburbia. I hope that Jane brings us back there soon.

Not your typical country book

I owned this book for a year before finally reading it, and then I thought to myself why in the heck didn't you read it sooner. I think I was thinking it was a typical country book, probably has a cowboy, etc...... Well I couldn't have been more wrong, sort of, there is a cowboy/rodeo star, but there was nothing typical about it. Porter always seems to amaze me with the depth she puts into her characters. She's Gone Country is a great book that takes you through Shay's life that has been turned upside down and she has gone back to her roots to start over, but she is not the same person that left all those years ago and she has to find that new balance for her and her sons. Then you throw in the handsome first love, that she wants to not want but can't seem to help herself. It is a great read.

Book Review

I like many others was impressed by this movie. Some 12 months or so ago I came across the book for a bargain price and snapped it up.The book focuses on the making of the movie but also contains superb photography of a very pretty part of the US. A book for fans and lovers of nature.

Good book, good movie

I was thankful to be able to get another copy of this book. We have moved a few times and I think it had been lost. Anyway, lots of good pictures with stills from the movie shoot in Madison County, Iowa back in 1994. Also some good commentary included about the movie. If you liked or loved the movie, as we do, you'll enjoy this book as well.

It would be the rare Christian or American, for that matter who hasn't heard or possibly hummed along with the tune of the classic hymn "Jesus Loves Me." This book maintains that far too few Christians understand the spiritual depth found in that simple refrain. Miller (The Singer Trilogy; Into the Depths of God) opens his dialogue on the expansive love of God by sharing three verses from the famous 1860 song by Anna B. Warner. Miller fleshes out the full meaning of the song's message, which not only expounds upon Jesus' love for his flock but goes on to proclaim Christ's redemptive work on the cross and his promise to remain close throughout life's journey. Staying true to the hymn's continuity, Miller devotes one chapter to each line. He uses storytelling and quotations to begin each chapter, followed by a personal and frequently introspective conversation with Jesus that is topped off with several related Bible references. The meat of each section covers such topics as embracing certainty, erasing doubt, recognizing God's strength in countering human weakness and having the comfort of believing that Christ is always present. Each chapter closes with questions for reflection that force the reader to do some inner probing. Miller is rightfully regarded as an eloquent communicator, yet this work doesn't quite rise to his usual standard. While sound and instructive, his words fail to invite the surge of inspiration or awed response that characterize the hymn itself.

Calvin Miller (PhD Min, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) served as a senior pastor in Omaha, as writer-in-residence and professor of communications and homiletics at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and taught at Beeson Divinity School. He was a poet, artist, novelist, and evangelist who wrote over forty books, including the Singer trilogy, Snow, Wind, Shade, The Book of Jesus, and Into the Depths of God.

Outstanding book

Calvin Miller has a unique ability to bring to life familiar truth. He writes with beauty and emotion, clearly enunciating God's love for each of His children. This book deals with the nitty-gritty of life in a way that is encouraging, challenging, and full of truth. I recommend it for anyone struggling with life, as well as those who are at the moment in a "peaceful place" between struggles.

pleasant surprise

I bought this because it was the most likely candidate from the five available in the Greyhound bus terminal. So I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised.

Basically the book goes through the song Jesus Loves Me line by line. Miller describes what that line means to him in his life and gives lessons from the lives of others who he has met in his 35+ years as a pastor. He also gives quotes from famous christians and exerpts from christian literature that relate to what he is saying. It is easy to read and the stories are nice in terms of showing real world examples of people who went through trials becuase Jesus sustained them. At the end of each chapter are questions to ask about your life.

As you probably guessed the chapter bodies don't have much scripture in them. But this gets me to what I found to be the highlight of the book. At the end of each chapter Miller includes a "Conversation with God" In these two page conversations Miller speaks in italics and a scripture verse replies to his concern. Here scriptures that build on one another helped to calm the speaker and counter fears.

This book is easy to read and any christian can get something out of it. If you are looking for a christian book (that isn't the bible) and you happen to see this then it is worth checking out.

Calvin Miller masterfully takes the simple words of this familiar hymn and inspires us all to bask in the glow of God's love. Using the song as his outline, Miller explores the deep truths expressed by simple faith. Opening the door on his own life and weaving it with the experience of Christians from all centuries, Miller's gratefullness for what Christ has done sings forth on every page. Encouraging and enlightening "Jesus Loves Me" is a welcomed reminder in a busy world.

Nothing "Advanced" about it. A Complete Waste of Time

I have never written a book review before but after paying for and reading this I am so disappointed that I am going to. The vast majority of the book is consumed by the author trying to justify why investing in real estate is a good investment. Why would one buy and "Advanced Guide to Real Estate" if one didn't already think it was a good investment? I think he's just trying to fill up pages so that the book appears to have relevant content. What little advice exists is vague like "do your homework" and "talk with a broker to get the market cap rate." When talking about how to identify a good market he points out his "successful" investment in Las Vegas purchased immediately before the crash. The only interesting part of the book, his analysis of what he thinks are going to be the top ten real estate markets is from 2008 and obviously quite outdated.

Cheating Death is an incredibly well-organized, informative and educational little tome. It reads like a novelized cross between a discovery health special and an episode of Rescue 911. The drama is there as Gupta details harrowing stories of near death intermixed with an accounting of the scientific possibility and theory surrounding all things death related. Along with chapters detailing new findings about CPR and the benefits of hypothermic treatment, Gupta surprises with medically dubious topics such as suspended animation, life after death, and miracles. It makes for a bizarre combination of topics, and an even more interesting read. The author utilizes an odd blend of first, second and third person narration which awkwardly works for the material. Gupta resists taking sides in any scientific debate allowing the heroic doctors, anecdotal cases, and studies to speak for him. Cheating Death covers a lot of technical subject matter, some of which is life saving information, but Gupta takes the time to walk the lay person through his terminology. I can not think of anyone who would not benefit from this read.

"When the heart stops beating, it's not the end."

What happens when blood no longer reaches the brain, organs begin to break down, and chemical reactions start destroying cells throughout the body? The answer is no longer as obvious as it once was. In "Cheating Death," Sanjay Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon and popular correspondent, describes some remarkable cases in which physicians managed to revive patients whose condition seemed hopeless. Sixty-three year old Zeyad Barazanji was working out on a treadmill when he was felled by a massive heart attack. "His heart pumped no blood, his brain sent no signals, [and] he thought no thoughts." Nevertheless, he recovered and went on to live a normal life. We know now that "death is not a single event, but a process that may to bbe interrupted, even reversed." Although this notion sounds fanciful, today there are "myriad ways that modern science is changing our understanding of life and death."

Gupta tells us about a man who is diagnosed with a brain tumor that is almost invariably fatal; a fetus with a life-threatening heart defect; a skier who falls through the ice and remains trapped beneath its surface for over forty minutes; and a hiker who stumbles, hits his head, and remains on the ground for twenty-four days before he is rescued. The story of these and other individuals demonstrates "that the human body can survive far longer than we usually bargain for." There are various techniques, such as therapeutic hypothermia, that can buy valuable time for those in extremis by staving off shock, controlling blood flow, and reducing the body's need for oxygen. Are these methods guaranteed to work every time, and are they used in every hospital? Absolutely not. However, researchers are constantly investigating new lifesaving protocols, some of which hold great promise.

The author's writing style, although not jargon-free, is accessible, lively, and engrossing. In addition, Gupta's revealing interviews with the pioneers of resuscitative medicine suggest that certain experimental practices may someday become part of mainstream emergency care. Although the book has extensive endnotes, it lacks an index, which would have been useful. In addition, Gupta does not adequately explain the differences between "brain death" and "persistent vegetative state," terms that are unclear to most laymen. Nevertheless, "Cheating Death" does offer an exciting look at the various ways in which "doctors and medical miracles ...are saving lives against all odds."

An enlightening read on the aspect of life and death...

I've always been fascinated by the vast field of medicine and new therapies/medicines/techniques for saving lives. Some of our greatest challenges include finding out just how in the world our cells work in order to fix the best we can fix things like cancer, tumors, terminal diseases, and brain swelling among many others. In Cheating Death, the reader gets a nice look at what kinds of revolutionary new techniques are being used across the world to save patients that would have normally been given a finite amount of time to live and then die. For example, hypothermia can actually be used to reduce swelling in crucial areas of the body and even the brain that can give doctors more time to work with the patient and see if there is anything they can do for them while the swelling goes down. In another instance, Dr. Gupta describes some of the bold techniques that involve actually operating in the uterus on the unborn child itself to save it from potentially fatal pre-birth defects and/or a shortened lifespan once born. As a science fan, I was the most intrigued when Cheating Death discussed the out of body experiences that people can have when they are in cardiac arrest or in some form of "brain death". I've always wondered if these experiences were just made up out of either the person's religious beliefs or something else. The answer from the book is that it's not 100% clear just what causes these episodes. Some physicians believe it is the lack of oxygen to the brain that causes these experiences while others believe cardiac arrest/brain death can induce a form of REM-intrusion sleep and that is how people have near death experiences. The big questions that this topic presents are those such as is consciousness something that can or cannot be separated from the mind? Who knows? Can God actually be generated by stimulating certain parts of the brain only?

Cheating Death doesn't fully answer these questions, but it definitely gets the reader thinking about just how complex and philosophical these questions can be sometimes and also just the subjective nature of them. There does seem to be a little bit of tension over whether Dr. Gupta's interviews/science behind some of his chapters are correct or not. Thus far only one person on this product page has actively made it his mission to troll every reviewers comments and criticize the book. As someone that's taken a few human anatomy and physiology classes, at least 80% or so of what Dr. Gupta wrote down in Cheating Death seems pretty accurate. Again, I'm not a neurosurgeon but it seems fairly petty to nit pick over details of what people do or do not consider to be brain death, comas, vegetative states, semi vegetative states, etc. It's a complicated topic that's very much open to interpretation. To say someone is dead wrong when the leaders in the field of neuroscience are not even 100% sure of the difference between brain death and vegetative states seems a little over the top. I'd like to genuinely hear from other practicing physicians and/or medical students on this matter since it seems to be causing some discord among those who have reviewed the book so far. I like the fact that we all have our opinions and can certainly criticize a book if we choose to. However, I disagree with unfair criticism when it's constantly being spouted off by just one reviewer and no one else (aside from one time reviewers and reviewers that have long gaps in between each review). I'd like to hear what others have to say as well that actually have some medical knowledge behind them.

Overall, I took this book for what it was - which was an enjoyable read and a book that the pages flew by in as I learned a bit more about the history of medicine and how different it is today versus back then. If the author happened to confuse some controversial terms and got them wrong is a matter of opinion. It didn't stop me from enjoying the overall product of Cheating Death. It's not a perfect book but it's a nice piece of the puzzle that keeps us up to date with the latest techniques/therapies in medicine and for that reason alone I'd recommend picking it up. It's a relatively short book at 256 pages and definitely not a door-stop! :)

Don't look behind you...

This is a harrowing tale of a young woman's worst nightmare come true. What a shivery pleasure it is, compulsively turning the pages of this thriller and thinking "just one more chapter"... Fearful of what the last page will reveal, I still keep reading, not nearly as brave as the heroine.
We first make the acquaintance of Abbie Devereaux when she is in a most extreme condition: her hands and feet are bound, there is a canvas bag over her head, a wire around her neck and a filthy gag in her mouth. But she perseveres, willing herself to survive this horrendous ordeal. Day by day, Abbie keeps her mind alert, imagining familiar images, anything not to lose hope, although she eventually starts to lose touch with reality, almost willing to die. Periodically tormented by her kidnapper, he sometimes leaves her alone for long periods. At an unexpected opportunity Abbie escapes, fleeing blindly into the night, sure her captor is but a breath behind. Finally, she sees a dim light. Collapsing, she wakes up in a hospital, police waiting to question her. Then comes the ultimate betrayal. No one believes her story.
There is no hard evidence for the police to track down Abbie's attacker and only her word for proof that anything happened at all. After a thorough examination, a clever therapist convinces the police that this incident is only a young woman's hysteria, a patient, in fact, prone to depression. Even Abbie's closest friends aren't sure whether or not she is telling the truth. Disheartened, Abbie is driven to prove the truth, haunted by nightmares and the knowledge that her would-be murderer is somewhere out there, waiting to finish the job. Danger stalks her every waking moment. Having cheated death, Abbie plumbs unexpected inner resources, unwilling to fail herself. Thus begins the arduous task of tracking her own footsteps, piecing together remnants of thoughts and scraps of information, ever closer to unfathomable fear and reviving the ordeal.
Tired of the same bored authors glibly churning out mysteries with hackneyed plots, it is a pleasure to find this well-crafted thriller. Nicci French meticulously plots each step of the action, not missing a beat. The author reveals a different side of this young woman with such an apparently routine life, where nothing's as it seems in a world of lost memories. Undaunted, Abbie makes her way through a maze of incongruent evidence, sifting and sorting, following her instincts. With courage born of desperation, she trusts no one but herself. Finally, Abbie embarks upon a nerve-wracking pursuit, coming face to face with true evil. Keep the lights on.

Very Suspenseful...Another winner for Nicci French.

Abbie Deveraux is living a nightmare. She is tied down with a hood covering her head, and she has no idea where she is, or why she is there. Abbie can feel the presence of her captor, but never a word is spoken. Abbie knows her days are numbered as the kidnapper tells her the tale of abducting and killing his women. With nothing but fear in her heart, Abbie makes a quick decision and escapes.
Telling the police of her ordeal will not be her only problem as the police don't believe her. As Abbie listens to what the detectives have to say she realizes nothing is as it seems, and those that she thought were friends are not.
Set out to prove herself sane, and catch the madman who abducted her, Abbie begins a terrifying journey retracing all of her steps leading up to the day she disappeared. As things become stranger, and Abbie begins doubting her own sanity, she makes a shocking discovery, one that will change the way she feels about those she loved, and at the same time stop a killer hell bent on destroying her.
`Land Of The Living' is an interesting little thriller with lots of surprises. Major plot twists are found throughout this gripping tale of memory loss and obsession, and the pages will turn fast as you race to see what will happen next. Well written and filled with full-bodied characters, this novel rises above the norm in the psycho thriller category. Each chapter has a shock and a cliffhanger, and each cliffhanger will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Nicci French has written previous bestsellers, all of which were page-turners that had readers glued to their chairs. Now with `Land Of Living' she continues her streak of up-all-night reads with a book that is probably her best to date. While remaining character driven thriller, the novel keeps it's suspense at high levels by teasing the reader with bits of plot information, and then throws in surprise after surprise to jangle their nerves.
`Land Of The Living' is a twisty thriller that should satisfy thriller readers, and land on the bestseller lists.

an excellent read

Out of all the Nicci French novels that I've read so far, "Land of the Living" is definitely my favourite. Suspenseful and fast paced, I stayed up all night in order to finish it -- it was definitely a book that was hard to put down.
I'm not going to summarise the plot too much because the story is a really a rather basic one and also because going into it too much may take away from the overall enjoyment of this really excellent book if you haven't read it yet. The novel opens with our heroine, Abbie Deveraux, coming to consciousness, only to realise that she's being held captive. Quickly she realises that her kidnapper is mad and that he will probably kill her once he's finished with her. But she is determined to survive. And when an opportunity presents itself, Abbie escapes. Her ordeal is now over. Or is it? She's lost her immediate short term memory, and has no idea as to what occurred in the days leading up to her kidnapping. On top of it all, she discovers to her shock and anger, that because that is no physical evidence to support her story, no one -- not the police, her NHS psychiatrist or her friends -- believes her story. Alone, Abbie is determined to piece together the past she has forgotten, and to find out why the kidnapper chose her. She also comes to the realisation that she needs to find the kidnapper before he finds her. Because she knows that he will come after her and that she has only herself to rely on...
"Land of a Living" was a really fantastic read. Brilliantly plotted, with some rather surprising plot twists and possessing a really compelling storyline, this really is a book that had me sitting at the edge of my seat -- metaphorically anyway. The 'action' unfolded smoothly and seamlessly and at a rather swift pace. I really cannot praise this book too much, and my recommendation is that if you're a mystery-suspense buff, then you really should read what is probably going to be the best suspenseful novel of the year.
