Slow Walk in a Sad Rain, by John P. McAfee

Here, from a remarkable new literary talent, is a novel destined to become the Catch-22 of the Vietnam War--a poignant, darkly comic tale based on the author's own experiences as a Green Beret in Vietnam. This deeply affecting novel follows the trials of a Special Forces Unit dispatched to the Laotian jungle who stumble upon a heroin operation.

From Publishers Weekly
In this grimly sardonic but strained and only episodically effective first novel about the Vietnam War by a decorated 'Nam veteran, an unnamed American Army captain narrates the story of an infantry unit based in a reconnaissance post near the Laotion border. Although he is nominally in command, the outfit is in effect led by a brutal sergeant called "Shotgun," who serves as an all-purpose scout-sapper-killer. While McAfee invests heavily in irony, his approach could not be less subtle. He writes in a terse, telegraphic series of sentences and one-sentence paragraphs that are obviously intended to drive home any gruesome jokes or conclusions readers may have missed. Shotgun emerges as a cartoon figure in a savage story; the key enlisted men in the outfit, "Quiet Voice" and Spec. 7 Thompson, are puppets in his hands. The novel's key event is the arrival of Col. Basshorn, who orders the small unit on a mission into Laos, where the soldiers encounter Vietcong (although rarely), CIA operatives and drug smugglers as well as blood flukes and other repulsive creatures. McAfee furnishes some vivid description of the Mekong River and its tributaries, and his expository information about armaments is often interesting. Unfortunately, the story never emerges from the screen of nicknames that objectify the chief characters and the black humor that constitutes the book's chief tone.

About the Author
Born in Clovis, New Mexico in 1947, John grew up with his brother on large ranches in West Texas: Ft. Davis, Alpine, and Van Horn. His mother was a professional politician in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he spent many summers fishing the Pecos River and attending the Santa Fe Opera. By Northern Wanderer
If an English professor were reviewing this book he might say character development is often poor, too many characters come in and out and don't advance the plot, it is episodic rather than narrative, all sorts of loose ends wander through and the characters lack motivation, beside survival. All probably true but this also sort of sums up the Vietnam War, not a lot made sense except getting home in one piece. This isn't bad writing, it is a very sophisticated simplicity that takes a really really good writer to pull off.

That said, I laughed my ass off more than once and the end hit me like a fist, as he brought things home about the old man and the young boy. We have sinned but if we are lucky, we found redemption in time and in watching our children grow up.

Solw Walk in a Sad Rain
By Franscis
This book is amazing, touching, sometimes off color and off putting in ways only a book on war could be. It is well written and engaging. I felt a vested interest in the characters. I read this book because it was recommended to me by a former Army Ranger.

A book that fully captures the mind-set of a soldier
By Colin Schmied
I was given this book by a friend who raved about it. I expected yet another terrible "Vietnam was hell-don't you feel sorry for me" books. Instead I got to read a book that transcends that conflict and all others. The story and mood could easily be transplanted to any other conflict in history and thats what makes this book so compelling. As a former enlisted infantryman, I rarely read any accounts that accurately portray the bizzare and often irrational logic that one has to adopt to deal with the situations faced by a soldier. Most stories and recollections make soldiers clear-thinking and rational and are usually from the perspective of an officer or high ranking NCO who seem almost to enjoy the experience. Any bad decisions are made "out-of scene" by politcally motivated officers or out-of-touch politicians. They imply that things would be fine without these busybodies. McAfee throws away these stereotypical conventions and gives us the hazy and almost absurdist reasoning that governs a man in times of unrelenting stress and deprevation. Each character in this story clings to each other, and in one case a mortar, to try and ground themselves in an environment of chaos and incoherence. This book should be a classic and the fact that it is out-of-print is a disgrace considering how much junk out there should never have been printed in the first place. However you can swing it, get this book. You will not be disapointed.

Death of a Valentine (Hamish Macbeth Mysteries), by M. C. Beaton

Amazing news has spread across the Scottish countryside. The most famous of highland bachelors, police sergeant Hamish Macbeth, will be married at last. Everyone in the village of Lochdubh adores Josie McSween, Macbeth's newest constable and blushing bride-to-be.

While locals think Josie is quite a catch, Hamish has a case of prenuptial jitters. After all, if it weren't for the recent murder of a beautiful woman in a neighbouring village, there wouldn't be a wedding at all. For it was a mysterious Valentine's Day package--delivered to the victim before her death--that initially drew Hamish and Josie together on the investigation. As they work side by side, Hamish and Josie soon discover that the woman's list of admirers was endless, confirming Hamish's suspicion that love can be blind, deaf . . . and deadly.

In bestseller Beaton's enjoyable 25th Hamish Macbeth mystery (after 2008's Death of a Witch), a Valentine's Day parcel explodes in the face of the Scottish Highlands' Lammas festival queen, Annie Fleming, as soon as she tries to open it, killing her instantly. Hamish Macbeth, newly promoted to sergeant, would rather investigate with only his trusty pets in tow, but is instead forced to tote along his new constable, the less than professional Josie McSween. Considered prim and proper and a right innocent, Annie turns out to have been leading a less than virtuous double life, with no shortage of suspects in her murder. A much sought after bachelor, Hamish desperately tries to break the case, while Josie, with dreams in her eyes, strives to crack Hamish's heart. Will Josie succeed in getting Hamish to say I do at the altar? For all the book's farcical moments, Beaton takes care as usual to provide a satisfying police procedural. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Beaton’s cozies set in the fictional Highland village of Lochdubh and starring the crusty village constable Hamish Macbeth are sometimes so predictable in their “stranger comes to the village and gets murdered” or “irascible villager gets murdered” plotlines that the cozy quickly becomes a drowsy. It seems that Beaton bestirred herself for this, the twenty-fifth in the series. It combines her gift for scenic description with an inventive, constantly surprising plot. Two women are at the center of the action: one is a constable from Strathbane, assigned to work for Macbeth, who lives in perpetual fear of being transferred to the urban blight of Strathbane. The other woman is the town beauty, queen of the Lammas Fest, who dies after opening a letter-bomb Valentine. This beauty queen is, we learn, what Scotland Yard terms a “murderee,” someone whose life invites violence. Both Beaton fans and newcomers to cozies will find her latest explosive and engaging. --Connie Fletcher

I finished this book after midnight and to sleep! I couldn't put it down! Such a great story. Poor Hamish! I know someday he will find love but his ability solving criminal cases is great. Now need to fix the "bosses"!

Death of a Cozy
By JACK C. BROWN
In "Death of a Valentine" author M.C. Beaton puts newly-promoted (again!) Sergeant Hamish Macbeth and his village of Lochdubh through their paces. The Curry sisters continue to speak in chorus. Angela struggles with writing a new book. The women in Hamish's love life (ha!) Priscilla and Elspeth, are called into cameo roles.

The "mystery" to me is why such a contrived piece of fiction as "Death of a Valentine" was ever published. Beaton continues her forays into the more complexities of psychosis and violent types of homicide. These genres are not suited to Beaton's flat, two-dimensional writing style. Coincidences abound. Guns are liberally sprinkled along with bodies dotting the Scottish Highlands.

The editing is also slipshod. In one passage, character names are interchanged and this literary faux pas goes on for several pages.

Beaton made a name for herself in the "cozy" mystery genre -- no graphic violence, no profanity, and no explicit sex. Most often, the crime takes place "off stage."

The genuine mystery is why Beaton is trying to abandon a genre that has served her well for many years to become a poor woman's Ruth Rendell.

Death of a Series
By stonycal
I enjoyed the earlier Hamish books, but I think Beaton has run out of steam with this series. This latest entry is so ham-handed as to be almost a parody. I figured out very early on who did it and the plot is silly. The charm has worn thin--all the regular characters have remained static, so no surprises are in store for the reader; you know exactly how each will behave. The new characters have zero nuance; they're either bad people or featureless filler. Also, the copy I read had so many errors that it was distracting (floor when it should have said door, etc.) Beaton's Agatha Raisin series has followed a similar trajectory. She should either create a new detective or find a new line of work.

Change Your Words, Change Your Life: Understanding the Power of Every Word You Speak, by Joyce Meyer

#1 New York Times bestselling author Joyce Meyer discusses the importance of words in CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE:
"Words are a big deal. They are containers for power, and we have to decide what kind of power we want our words to carry. ... I believe that our words can increase or decrease our level of joy. They can affect the answers to our prayers and have a positive or negative effect on our future. ... One might say that our words are a movie screen that reveals what we have been thinking and the attitudes we have."

Building on the premises of her bestselling books, Power Thoughts and Living Beyond Your Feelings, Joyce examines how we use words-the vehicles that convey our thoughts and emotions-and provides a series of guidelines for cultivating talk that is constructive, healthy, healing, and used for good results.

Topics include:

  • The Impact of Words
  • How to Tame Your Tongue
  • How to be Happy
  • When to talk and when not to talk
  • Speaking Faith and Not Fear
  • The Corrosion of Complaints
  • Do you really have to give your opinion?
  • The importance of keeping your word
  • The power of speaking God's word
  • How to have a smart mouth

In "A Dictionary of God's Word" at the end of the book, Joyce provides dozens of scripture verses, arranged by topic, and recommends that we read them aloud to strengthen our vocabulary of healing words.

Practical Clarity and Truth Needed for Every Committed Christian
By O. Merce Brown
*****
This latest book by author Joyce Meyer is life-changing, literally. Like every Joyce Meyer book, it is clear, simple, very inspirational, and fully of hope and blessing. It is a book written for Christians, and in my opinion, deeply needed by the church. It is very realistic and practical, not a stereotypical "positive confession book", although it does advocate speaking positively and it does advocate confessing Scripture to walk in faith. It never advises denying reality. Instead, the author champions the concept of "speaking with faith instead of fear", which she explains that "...that doesn't mean that we deny our circumstances, but we do deny them the right to rule over us." In short, this is a balanced book, through and through.

The chapters explain so much about how our thoughts and our words are related to the quality of our lives--and about how we can take control of both our thoughts and our words and then speak and think in agreement with the Word of God. The chapters cover topics like: speaking with hope, speaking foolishly, when and how to speak about our problems, dealing with anger, "fasting our words", complaining, encouraging, loving people with our words, deep listening versus surface listening, self-talk (this was my favorite), gossip, giving our opinion, keeping our word, and so much more.

The author is very transparent. She writes that one key reason she wrote the book was to help herself. She gives many examples of the challenges she has faced, and how much time and effort it took to overcome them; she also admits some problems that she still struggles with. The book includes lots of illustrations of the points she makes in memorable and moving stories.

The book also addresses the challenges in the world of cyberspace and the changes in communication patterns brought about by technology.

The book ends with an appendix of Scripture verses for various difficult life situations, formatted and organized in a way that they can be read, believed, and said both in your heart and with your lips.

The author prays that this book will be a turning point for the reader, and I think it will be, as it was for me.

Highly recommended for Christians who want to live an empowered and obedient and joyful Christian life.

UPDATE 9/15/12: I originally read this book on the Kindle. I ordered a hardcopy too, because it is just that good. I wanted to mention that the font in the hardcopy is happily quite large--about 14 points or so--easy for these older eyes to read! The paper can take a highlighter without undue bleed-through as well.

This book truly does have the potential to change your life
By FaithfulReader.com
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." That old saying must be one of the biggest lies ever, right?

We all know that words have the potential to hurt us --- not physically, but emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Words have the ability to lighten our mood, make us smile or burst into tears, or even cause resentment and bitterness to seep into our hearts. As Proverbs 18:21 tells us, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." (KJV) As the Bible also reveals, it is virtually impossible to tame the tongue. This is proven by the fact that, even though sermons about the effect of our words are presented from pulpits all over the world, we still continue to gossip, complain, criticize, and lash out at others. But what is impossible to do on our own is possible with God. Not easy, but possible.

Joyce Meyer understands the power of words. She admits that she alienated and hurt many people over the course of her life. Because of the abuse she endured as a child, she had plenty of reasons for her negative attitudes, critical spirit and harsh demeanor. But she eventually realized that this behavior wasn't producing positive results. More specifically, as stated on page 12 of her book, she learned that, "If a person continually sows negative thoughts, attitudes, and words, he will produce negative results in his life. Likewise, if he sows positive, life-filled thoughts, attitudes, and words, he will see good, positive results." When she began to study God's Word on the subject and applied the truths she found there, she gained major victory in this area. Meyer shares her wisdom in her latest book, CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

In her usual straightforward style, Meyer teaches us how to tame our tongues, how to stay strong through the storms of life, how to speak faith, not fear, and when to listen and when to speak. She includes chapters on complaining, speaking words of encouragement, keeping our word, words that grieve the Holy Spirit, how to speak gentle words, fasting our words, how to defeat our enemies, and learning to say what God says. In fact, speaking according to God's Word is the main point driven home throughout this book. As Meyer tells us in Chapter 3, "We cannot say what God says unless we know what He has said, and that is why we must study the Word of God diligently."

At the end of the book, there are over 20 pages dedicated to providing "A Dictionary of God's Word," listing specific Bible verses to recite and meditate on when facing difficult life situations. You'll find verses for times when you feel that you don't have the strength to go on. When you're angry and bitter. When you need confidence. When you're discouraged or depressed. When you're afraid. When you need healing. When you're lonely. When you need financial help. Peace. Forgiveness. Justice. Wisdom. And many more. This is a wonderful tool, giving us positive words to speak and/or pray when we're tempted to complain or simply talk about our problems.

Because words are such an important part of our everyday lives, and because they have such an impact on our relationships and our own mental health, CHANGE YOUR WORDS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE is a must-read. With the multitude of scriptures, real-life examples, and Meyer's personal testimony, this is a book to keep on your nightstand and refer to time and time again. As quoted in the book, "All change begins by facing truth and not making any excuses for wrong behavior." If you're willing to get your toes stepped on a bit, and you have an open heart, ready to change how you think and speak, then this book truly does have the potential to change your life.

By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Joyce Meyer, one of the world's leading Bible teachers with her TV and Radio Broadcast, delivers a presentation on the power of words and how our own words can have a positive or negative effect on our future. The author clearly portrays the importance of words, and how the difference can also change your life. In addition, she evaluates how words can control our emotions and thoughts, why we should use guidelines to ensure we are using constructive words, and how healing and healthy words produce good results. Included with her topics of discussion are ways to be happy, keeping your word, when not to talk, and much more. The Kingmaker, by Brian Haig

In the worst case of treason in U.S. history, General William Morrison has been charged with a breathtaking array of crimes. Oddsmakers give Sean Drummond zero chance of saving his client from a death sentence. However, his obligation runs deeper than simply professional: Morrison's wife, a CIA executive, has begged Sean to save her husband, and Drummond doesn't want to disappoint his old flame. Despite ever-more-damning intelligence leaks that paint Morrison as worse than Bene- dict Arnold, Drummond bulls ahead and comes to suspect that this simple case of treason is actually a chess game being played at the highest levels by the best and brightest-one in which Morrison is merely a pawn.

From Publishers Weekly
Military lawyer Sean Drummond, the wiseass hero of Haig's promising new series, ventures into the '90s aftermath of the Cold War this time out. The rollicking, free-swinging attorney is assigned to defend U.S. Army Gen. William Morrison, a Russian specialist accused of being a Soviet spy for 10 years. Drummond doesn't particularly want the job. On a professional level, he dislikes traitors. Personally, he resents the pompous Morrison. Complicating matters further, Drummond still carries a torch for Morrison's sexy wife, who had her pick of the two men years earlier and opted for the one with the higher rank. Despite all the distractions, Drummond hurls himself into the case. The action bounces back and forth in dramatic fashion between Washington, D.C., and Moscow, with Drummond finding nothing but discouragement in both capitals. It is only after two attempts on his life that he begins to suspect that Morrison was framed. Drummond's tireless investigations eventually put him face to face with a man who has been the driving force behind every Russian ruler in the past 30 years: the so-called Kingmaker. Haig's third Drummond adventure (after Mortal Allies) rolls along in high spirits, mixing clever cloak-and-dagger tricks, gutsy heroics and edgy, often humorous dialogue. Drummond at times borders on comic caricature-he personally kills five villains, stabbing one fatally in the eye with a ballpoint pen-yet he is easy to root for and fun to watch in action. Remarkably, his smart-alecky personality, expressed in one wisenheimer comment after another, remains fresh from start to finish.

From Library Journal
U.S. Army lawyer Maj. Sean Drummond (Mortal Allies; Secret Sanction) returns for a third time in yet another exciting legal thriller, primarily set in Washington, DC, and Moscow. This time, he is called upon to defend Brig. Gen. William T. Morrison, who is charged with murder and treason, along with a host of other things, on behalf of Russia. Helped only by a Russian-speaking punk-rocker female lawyer with more body piercings than the law allows, Drummond is outnumbered and outgunned by the prosecution, led by his legal nemesis Eddie Golden. Worse, his client is a philandering jerk who is obnoxious, arrogant, and otherwise totally unlikable. Then villains who don't know about Drummond's Special Forces background attempt to assassinate him. In addition, Drummond must overcome massive government plots and equally massive cover-ups-topped by a "vacation" in Siberia-before justice is served. Haig seems to get better with each book, and Drummond is a marvelously imperfect hero. For most popular fiction collections.

From Booklist
Sean Drummond, the protagonist of Haig's Secret Sanction (2001) and Mortal Allies [BKL My 1 02], is back--and in good form. Drummond is an attorney with the army's Judge Advocate General's office, and his new assignment is to defend a brigadier general who was the U.S. military attache in the Moscow embassy, now charged with treason. The general's wife is Drummond's former "slumber buddy." Drummond selects a Russian-speaking co-counsel to help him, a young woman with a silver bead in her left nostril and a silver hoop poking out of her navel. There is nothing unique about the plot, but Haig's approach to what is a rather standard story line is entertaining with a capital E . In describing Drummond's ex-lover's father, for example, Haig writes, "I thought I heard him laugh once at a cocktail party, but when I went to investigate, he was choking on a piece of lobster. I rooted for the lobster, incidentally." That kind of sarcastic dialogue and the sharply drawn characters that speak these wonderful lines are sure to delight readers. George Cohen

Brian Haig-always delivers!
By lrp
Brian Haig is an excellent writer and I'm constantly looking for new work done by him. I especially enjoy his Jag character, Sean Drummond, who is witty and sarcastic but honorable and just. I've also listened to the audible cassettes and downloads which are brilliantly narrated by Scott Brick. The writing by Brian Haig coupled with the narration of Scott Brick can't be beat. You will not be disappointed.

An Enjoyable Story with an Obnoxious Protagonist
By George Webster, Ph.D.,
This tale continues Brian Haig's series of thrillers that feature Major Sean Drummond, a loud-mouthed, know-it-all attorney in the US Army. The nice thing about the story is that Haig succeeds in giving us an engrossing plot and plenty of action despite his central character. In this story, Drummond has the assignment of defending Brigadier General William Morrison against charges of spying for Russia. Morrison, who is even more obnoxious than Drummond, claims that he is innocent, and the huge amount of evidence against him suggests that he may be, or we wouldn't have much of a story, but Drummond must prove it. He enlists the aid of Katrina Mazorski, a Russian-speaking, civilian attorney, and they go to work on the evidence against General Morrison. It soon becomes clear that someone does not want them to investigate too deeply and is willing to kill them to prevent it. From here on, the story becomes increasingly exciting and reaches an unexpected, but satisfying, climax. The book kept me fascinated during a long, uncomfortable airplane ride, and is well worth reading.

Amazon.com Review
Pleasing color sketches and simple diagrams adorn the pages of Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm by famed Sex and the City actor Kim Cattrall and her husband, jazz musician Mark Levinson. The fact that Cattrall's character on the show, Samantha Jones, is a sexual giantess is likely to bump up sales a notch for this attractive, children's-size book, but nevertheless it's a very worthwhile read.

Simple concepts--open communication, trust, love, and a consistent interest in pleasing one another--are the ingredients for an enriching and fulfilling sex life that can bring two people ever closer, according to the text. The facts speak for themselves: when pressed, women will confess in droves that they are sexually frustrated. It's tricky to communicate one's carnal desires to one's lover, yet both parties must be open to this type of ongoing discussion for the formula to work.

Meanwhile, a little education for men can go a long way. The concepts are basic--anyone who isn't a virgin probably knows them. But the rub lies in the consistency, the selflessness, and the patience required of the man. Cattrall and Levinson ask their male readers how they'd feel if they experienced some physical pleasure during lovemaking but never got to climax; they would likely get frustrated after a while. So an abiding devotion to pleasing the woman is a basic assumption throughout, and one that isn't commonly pointed out in such an open way elsewhere. Some readers may think Cattrall and Levinson's approach offers nothing new or exciting, but this honest reminder of what it takes to be a sensitive and satisfying lover is just what the doctor ordered. --Teri Kieffer

From Publishers Weekly
"Some people... assume that for me to play a sexually open character, like Samantha Jones on HBO's Sex and the City, I must have had fabulous sex most of my life. Well, the truth is that until three years ago most of my sexual experiences were miserable," confesses Kim Cattrall, in Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm, a slim yet pensive guide to pleasing women in bed. Simple sketches accompany the dry text (written by Cattrall and her husband, Mark Levinson), explaining different techniques men and women can use. This book is decidedly unflashy and its approach is not at all brashly sexual (like Cattrall's TV character). Rather, it is a thoughtful manual on women's orgasms.

Review
"Kim Cattrall breaks all the rules. Not only is she more stunningly seductive than her fellow stars in the TV series Sex And The City, but she's also established that passion and pleasure go on getting better the more grown-up you become." Good Housekeeping.

Beautiful desserts from Medrich's California pastry shops, which have gained a national reputation for their chocolate creations. Her famous truffles are here, along with elaborate cakes, tortes, and even a few nonchocolate desserts. Many of them are based on classic French pastries, but novice bakers will find the author's production tips and clear instructions valuable, and professionals may pick up a few useful shortcuts along with ideas for eye-catching presentations. Cocolat should be on every baker's bookshelf.
By C.S.
This book is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone who loves desserts and loves to bake. As a former pastry chef myself, I have well over 200 cookbooks, and this is one of the most well-written, best-tested baking books I own. As a matter of fact, I can only say that about 2 other books I have. I have made about 90% of the desserts in this book, and they have all turned out exactly like Chef Medrich describes and look exactly like the photos. How many baking books can you say that about? I can't begin to count the number of people that I have recommended this book to.
If you buy Cocolat for no other reason you should buy it for the "Building Blocks" in the back. If you have that section and follow her directions exactly, you will be able to create an endless number of incredible desserts. Chef Medrich's genoise formula, for example, is the most reliable formula for genoise I've ever used. That is a staple in my kitchen, along with her formula and method for french buttercream. And frankly, her formula for Chocolate Velvet Mousse is worth the price of the book all on its own. I use it for everything; filling for every type of cake, mixed with whipped cream for fillings for cream puffs, layered with sponge cake for chocolate trifle; I could go on and on. In my opinion, it's the finest chocolate mousse both in texture and flavor that I've ever eaten.
Marcel Desaulnier markets himself as the King of Chocolate, but he can't even begin to compare with Alice Medrich, who is in a class all by herself.
Chef Medrich, if you read this, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! You and Emily Luchetti are my baking mentors; you are a great chef and teacher.

A must-have
By B
I bought this cookbook when it first came out and the recipes are fabulous. This book meets my criteria for a great cookbook- it has recipes that turn out superbly - with the bonus that the picures in the book look as beautiful as the products taste. I feel lucky when I get 2 or 3 good recipes out of a book but all of the ones in this book have turned out so far. You don't have to be a professional chef...just a careful reader, planner and follower of directions.
My original copy was lost and I went into sticker shock when I saw the price of replacing it now that it is out of print. Oh well..it is worth it.

Fabulous Cookbook!
By George A. Schmid
This is one of the premier chocolate dessert cookbooks of all time and it is very disappointing it is out of print. Alice Medrich is a phenomenal pastry chef (there is a good reason she is known as the First Lady of Chocolate) and she does not disappoint with this book. The recipes are absolutely divine. What really sets this cookbook apart from others is the fact there is a picture of the finalized product next to the recipe. It is so much easier to cook from a recipe when you can see what the finished product will look like. A must have!

FEAR HAS A WAY...

Lucy Donovan always gets her man. As a fiercely independent CIA agent, she's survived hundreds of death-defying missions. But her latest may just get her killed. Weighed down with a secret she's desperate to keep, the last thing Lucy needs is to be sent undercover with a man who brings out the best--and the worst--in her.

OF GETTING YOU KILLED

Navy SEAL Gus Atwater never turns down an assignment, even if it means working with the only woman he's ever loved and lost. So with a volatile mix of desire and distrust, Lucy and Gus confront their tangled past. Pretending to be man and wife is risky enough, but now the clock is running out. As their mission escalates from desperate to deadly, will Lucy's secret expose them both?

Review by The Reading Reviewer, Mary Gramlich
By Mary Gramlich
Lucy Donovan is a scrappy fighter with the ability to infiltrate enemy lines and consistently get the job done in her capacity as a trained CIA operative. Lucy does not do helpless and she absolutely has no time for complicated emotions. Lt. James "Gus" Atwater is a Navy Seal working as part of an elite CIA support and he has no time for anyone that does not understand the meaning of teamwork. What these two don't know is that none of their training or covert operative experience is going to help them when they meet up again after many years apart and have to face all the demons that a past relationship has, especially one where there are unresolved issues.

Gus and Lucy knew each other in college and had shared many secrets and desires as young lovers, but grown up plans pulled them apart and adult aspirations kept them away from one another. Now though they must face each other as both of them are called into service by the CIA and have to stand up to terrorists that have no interest in anything but money and revenge. Their mission is one of hostage rescue in a third world country while posing as a married couple under the guise of UN diplomacy. They will work with negotiators in close quarters and tight spaces trying hard to ignore the pented-up feelings toward each other that never went away while they get the job done. Trying to keep things professional and uncomplicated while terrorists are surrounding you is easier said than done because love comes in the strangest places under the most dire of circumstances. The love burns strong between them and the emotions are fueled by not only love but fear that this might be the only time they will ever have together again. They both want to think of tomorrow but how can they when the thought that this is the last day on earth is surrounding them.

But as with all great plans this one comes apart very quickly and Lucy and Gus realize that not only do they need to understand the meaning of teamwork they have to rewrite it. The Columbians suspect them of being spies, the other "negotiators" don't trust enough to reveal all the details of the trips and Lucy's fear that she is falling back in love with Gus is not a match that should make for happy endings under good times but in the jungle with terrorists how is it possible.

This amazing book cannot be summed up with one word or another because it is so many things all at once. It is a wonderful romantic story with Lucy and Gus working through old feelings and new emotions, as well as, adventuresome with the trip through the jungle and detailing sophisticated spy gadgets. It is also an underlying story of survival with the hostage victim's plight being explained and a feeling of true sadness at their blight. It is a great author that can draw all this out in a book and this series has shown that the storyline can continue, the drama unfold and romance still survive under any circumstances.

Good read....could have been better
By denak
I love Marliss Melton's books. I should say this right off so people won't think this is a negative review although I think it could have been better. I am one of these people that absolutely hates when a romance authors describes her male lead character as a "Navy Seal" and thats it. They get away with throwing the name out and their lack of research by saying "well I try to be accurate to the "spirit" of the SEALs" and yet they then cast their male lead as a "rogue SEAL." To me it is just irritating and I think, ultimately, it is insulting to the men who are actually SEALS, or in other Special Ops.

Marliss Melton doesn't do that. She actually understand and accuarately writes about the training, the military mindset, lifestyle, the weapons used, the toll Special Ops can take on the men physically, mentally and emotionally and how a mission is completed and the tactics used to complete that mission. The fact that she does this makes her books richer and more entertaining.

Unfortunately, she doesn't always take that attention to detail and apply it to whatever Latin American country she is setting her novel in. She tends to try to shove the country into her novel as opposed to actually learning about the country and its history and sometimes, her mistakes make me cringe. For example, in one part of the novel, Gus they find a map that is in code, Lucy gets all excited and starts asking, "Is it in Incan?" "Is this Incan?" The answer is No Lucy (and Marliss) it isn't and never could have been written in the Inca language because the Incas didn't have a written language. There are some "written" languages that date back to Pre-Colombian times but they used by other Indigenous groups and they are in hieroglyphic form. Both Gus and Lucy should have known...and in real life..would have known..that it could not have been Incan. I think Marliss wanted to try to show she knew something of the region but she just kind of dropped the ball by introducing the Incas in the story given the fact that she didn't do her research and didn't understand the culture she refers too even briefly. Those little mistakes really sour the story. Although she did get the FARC and its ideology correct.

Secondly, I agree with another poster when she says that we should have known more about Lucy's and Gus's previous love affair. I think it would have been very sweet part of the story. Also, it would have been nice to have a little bit more interaction with the SEALS only because after reading all of her books, I have a vested interest in finding out what happens to them. I want to know if they live "happily ever after."

So, I give the book 4 stars. It still is a really good book. I just hope that in her next book, she researches the country/history better and she treats us to the boys more.

amazing

Lucy Donovan, an exceptional CIA agent, barely survived her last mission and is still battling with the trauma she was put through but months later she is already eager to get some action again. But this time she is not alone but has to play wife to Navy SEAL Gus Atwater on a mission to rescue two American hostages held by the FARC in the Columbian jungle.
Gus is the SEAL that rescued Lucy months before and he is also the man whom Lucy was in love in college. Years ago she broke up with him after something shocking happened to her but it's clear that there is still unsolved business between them. To survive their mission they have to work together and especially have to trust in each other once more. Deep in FARC territory they soon get close again but to really have a future they first of all have to survive the cruelty dealt to them by the terrorists.

"Show no Fear" by Marliss Melton is a great book which I enjoyed reading a lot. I'm very sensitive about books that use extensive torture, rape scenes every few pages and I'm very happy that Marliss Melton doesn't write that way. She never crosses the line about what is too much for the heroine and hero to deal with. Normally I'm reading only straight romances but for Marliss Melton I'm making an exception because I just enjoy her books a lot.
Lucy is a great heroine that realizes after years of self-doubt that life is worth living and that there is no need to feel guilty about being a survivor. Gus is there for her from the first moment they meet again and I loved reading how they got together again. Gus is the kind of hero you have to love. He's a strong man with deep feelings who will do everything for the woman he loves.
I also enjoyed meeting the rest of Gus's SEAL team again and can't wait to read the next book by Marliss Melton.

From Publishers Weekly
Arguably this country's best crime yarn spinner, Connelly has not only concocted an extremely clever plot for the second novel featuring Lincoln lawyer Mickey Haller, he has included his longtime series hero Harry Bosch as a supporting player in the who- and whydunit. The one less-than-perfect ingredient on this audio version is its reader, who, unlike former Connelly interpreters Len Carriou or Dick Hill, is not quite able to match the author's noir mood naturally. Peter Giles, an actor who has appeared in enough TV detective episodes to know better, starts off trying much too hard to sound hard-boiled. Haller is a lawyer, not Mike Hammer. But as the tricky tale plays out, with Haller and Bosch on the hunt for a homicidal jury manipulator, Giles tones down the toughness and settles in on a smartly paced and considerably more satisfying delivery. From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics were pleased to see two of Michael Connelly's protagonists—the relatively new Mickey Haller and world-weary homicide detective Harry Bosch—come together for the first time. They agreed that while this union of sorts could have been cliched, it succeeded for the most part by adding a new layer—the evolution of a relationship forged by protagonists of different series—to Connelly's oeuvre. Haller's presence adds a lighter tone to the story, which balances Bosch's darker, more ruminative outlook. Both play against each other nicely as Connelly writes at once a police procedural and a captivating legal thriller. The Washington Post called The Brass Verdict primarily entertainment, with deeper undertones—just right for Connelly fans.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It hasn’t gone well for L.A. lawyer Mickey Haller since the events described in The Lincoln Lawyer (2005). The recovery from being shot was slow, and the addiction to prescription drugs was worse than the recovery. But Haller has kicked the pills and is ready to practice law again when his friend and fellow attorney Jerry Vincent is murdered, and Mickey inherits all Vincent’s cases, including a career-maker: the trial of a studio executive accused of killing his wife and her lover. Quickly, Mickey realizes he’s caught in the middle: defending the mogul requires concealing facts that could help solve the Vincent murder. OK, Mickey’s used to playing fast and loose with the cops, but the investigating officer, Harry Bosch, knows when he’s being played. Careful Connelly readers will know that there’s a connection between the author’s two heroes, Bosch and Haller, even though this is the first time the two costarred together (see The Black Light, 1993). Connelly plays the dueling characters off against one another effectively, especially for those familiar with the previous books, but it isn’t all about backstory. Like Lincoln Lawyer, this is a fine legal thriller, full of both electric courtroom scenes and fascinating behind-the-scenes stuff about the business of lawyering. Connelly is justly celebrated for his characters and his ability to create mood from the sights and sounds of L.A., but he’s also a terrific plotter, and that skill is in high relief here. Essential for fans; a great read for anybody. --Bill Ott

A fantastic continuation in the Hieronymous Bosch series.
By Wayne Robinson
I started reading the latest Harry Bosch book last night. Finished it this morning, it's so enthralling.

The novel deals with two cases. Harry Boschs' nemesis Irvin Irving, ex-deputy police chief and city councillor, requests Harry Bosch to investigate the death of his son, George Irving, who apparently committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor suite of a Hollywood hotel.

The other case resulted from a cold case discovery of DNA in a blood smear on the neck of a rape-murder victim shown to originate from a sex offender who was just 8 years old at the time.

The title 'the Drop' could be referring to the apparent suicide. It could also refer to 'DROP', 'Deferred Retirement Option Plan', which is the reason why Harry Bosch had returned to the LAPD to the Open-Unsolved Unit. The novel opens with Harry Bosch being told he had a 4 year extension of his second and final contract, meaning that he'd be permanently retired in 39 months time (Michael Connelly has indicated that that will be the end of the Bosch series), so that leaves plenty of time for further novels in the series.

I can hardly wait...

Please Don't Let Harry Retire!
By Michael A. Newman
This is another excellent book about Harry Bosch, my favorite LAPD homicide investigator. The title of the book may throw the reader off though.
The DROP in this book refers to the Deferred Retirement Option Program of the LAPD. Harry is still working in the Unsolved Cases unit and is at the mandatory retirement age and had put in for a DROP. Through it is not the focal point of the story, it does tie in to Harry's mindset throughout the book.

Harry and his partner Chu get assigned to a cold case of a woman who was murdered several years prior. The DNA evidence on the case points to Clayton, Pell a convicted sex-offender. This would be a slam dunk except that when the crime happened, Pell was only eight years old.

Before Harry can investigate further he is told from the people upstairs (his former partner Kiz Rider) that he must drop everything and devote his entire effort to investigating the apparent suicide of a councilman's son. This brings up an issue for Harry. Firstly, he does not like the councilman at all and is anxious to investigate the other case. He is told that the councilman's son is crucial because the councilman is responsible for department budget cuts and handling this case could help the LAPD get some of their funding back.

Of course Harry will do things his way and will find ways to bypass instructions and work on both cases at once. At times through the book Harry's actions will alienate those around him, especially his partner Chu and his new love interest (a social worker helping Clayton Pell). The book never gets boring and Harry's relentless and methodical pursuit to get to the truth is prevalent throughout. Even his daughter Madeline seems to pitch in for some good advice and could play a bigger role in future books to come.

I give the book four stars and would have rated it higher except that I felt a little uncomfortable with Harry pursuing a relationship with the social worker for Clayton Pell.

"A trial is a contest of lies. And everybody in the courtroom knows this."
By Mary Whipple
This terrific follow-up to The Lincoln Lawyer, featuring troubled defense lawyer Mickey Haller, also includes famed police detective Hieronymous (Harry) Bosch, who has been a hero in thirteen previous Connelly mysteries. Though Haller and Bosch work on opposite sides (one on defense and one on prosecution) and even live on opposite sides of the bay, they are thrown together against their wills and must cooperate if they are going to see justice served. Haller has just returned to law practice after a hiatus in which he has dealt with his demons and his addictions, the result of a long, painful hospitalization and several complex surgeries after he was "gut shot."

Haller has inherited the entire caseload of former prosecutor Jerry Vincent, who became a defense attorney after Haller beat him soundly in a court case. Vincent has been murdered in the garage beside his office, his laptop and case notes missing, with the biggest case of his career due for trial in less than a week. Walter Elliot, head of the highly successful Archway Pictures, is being tried for the murder of his wife and her lover, and he refuses to agree to a continuance, even though Haller, new to the case, recommends it. This case, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, soon begins to overlap with another of Vincent's cases--one taken pro bono, and not in any of Vincent's files or on his calendar--a complete "mystery case" to Haller.

As he works, Haller relies on stalwart friends and associates, all of whom show their own personalities here as they support Haller and try to keep him from backsliding under stress. His first former wife, Maggie McPherson, a prosecutor, needs to be reassured that he is stable enough to be a father again to his daughter. His second former wife, Lorna Taylor, still works with him, though she is now living with Dennis Wojchiechowski (Cisco), Haller's investigator. Harry Bosch, who is investigating the Jerry Vincent murder for the police, frequently overlaps with Haller regarding issues in Vincent's cases, and they occasionally meet. Though they are alike in many ways, their hostility is often palpable.

As Haller looks for the "magic bullet," the "get-out-of-jail-free" card that would clear Walter Elliot of a double murder, he must explore issues of bribery, jury tampering, fraud, police misconduct, organized crime, legal malpractice, federal crime, and even international crime--not to mention murder, including potentially his own. The novel, written in exceptionally clear prose, keeps all the complications from becoming overwhelming as the author recreates the legal one-upsmanship of a case going to trial. Connelly draws the reader in and increases the tension by making him/her an "expert" on the legal importance of events to the Elliot case. Exciting, beautifully crafted, filled with non-stop action, and always centered on achieving justice, this novel is completely satisfying--one that has it all. n Mary Whipple
