Amazon.com Review
Find out for yourself why virtually everyone you know has this book, described as an "adventure in pursuit of a spiritual mystery", on their coffee table. In the tradition of Carlos Castaneda's The Teachings of Don Juan.

From Publishers Weekly
Redfield's debut is a fast-paced adventure in New Age territory that plays like a cross between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Moses's trek up Mt. Sinai. Originally self-published, the book sold phenomenally, sparked by word of mouth, and may be this year's The Bridges of Madison County --with which it shares some regrettable stylistic similarities. The saga begins when the unnamed middle-aged male narrator whimsically quits his nondescript life to track down an ancient Peruvian manuscript (pretentiously called the Manuscript) containing nine Insights that supposedly prophesy the modern emergence of New Age spirituality. South of the border, he encounters resistance from the Peruvian government and church authorities, who believe the document will undermine traditional family values. While dodging evil soldiers, paranoid priests and pseudoscientific researchers, our hero sequentially discovers all nine Insights during a series of chance encounters. Redfield has a real talent for page-turning action, and his lightweight quest employs auras, energy transfers and other psychic phenomena. But several of the Insights are incredibly vacuous and politically correct, and long stretches of dialogue are banal and cliched. The book ends with the protagonist poised to discover the 10th Insight in a promised sequel. 250,000 first printing; BOMC selection; author tour.

By Daniel
This book opened my mind to thinking about how as humans we relate to one another. The language is simple, and the plot noticeably serves the underlying philosophies of the book, but that didn't bother me too much. Having experienced firsthand a lot of the message the author means to communicate, it was an enjoyable story to relate the insights Redfield shares. Worth reading over a weekend if you're looking for some spiritual solace or desire to look at life in a new way. A book worth talking about between friends.

This was an excellent job of giving substance to concepts that many have sought as an alternative to traditional religion without challenging the basic idea of a higher being and our relationship with it.

This Is a Book, by Demetri Martin

From the renowned comedian, creator and star of Comedy Central's Important Things with Demetri Martin comes the paperback debut of his bold, original, New York Times best-selling humor book.

THIS IS A BOOK was an instant and long-lasting New York Times best seller, and is the renowned comedian's hilarious foray into prose comedy. In these pages, Martin expands on the sensibility he's developed on stage as an award-winning stand-up comedian and on television as a writer-performer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and his own Comedy Central series, Important Things with Demetri Martin.

Featuring narrative essays, short stories, and conceptual pieces (such as "Protagonists' Hospital," where doctors treat only the shoulder wounds of Hollywood action heroes) as well as Martin's signature drawings, absurdities, and one-liners, THIS IS A BOOK delivers sharp jokes, colorful characters, and interesting surprises.

Martin takes readers to places as far-off as Ancient Greece ("Socrates's Publicist") and the distant future ("Robot Test," where everyone must take a test to prove that they are not robots). He recounts a lonely man's visit to a strip club in the form of a five-hundred-word palindrome ("Palindromes for Specific Occasions"). And he examines the human condition ("Human Cannonball Occupational Hazards") and the competing world-views of divergent groups ("Optimist, Pessimist, Contortionist").

Martin's material is varied, but his unique voice and brilliant mind will keep readers in stitches from beginning to end.

From Publishers Weekly
In this collection of essays, musings, and drawings, Comedy Central host Martin (Important Things with Demetri Martin) gently skewers contemporary social trends, conventions, and insecurities, taking on topics from social hotlines to family and relationships. With a gift for describing awkward situations, Martin challenges readers to recognize the human need for connection and recognition. The theme is seen in a panel in which a limousine displaying two flags on its hood is labeled "important"; another displaying seven flags is "very important." He also answers the big questions with essays like "Who I Am" in which he declares: "I am bravery. I am courage. I am valor. I am daring. I am holding a thesaurus." Throughout, Martin jokes in many guises, silly one moment, barbed the next, and he achieves a satirical brilliance that moves easily among surprising topics, like philosophy, to easy targets, like healthy lifestyles. Review
"This book embodies the essence of Demetri's comedy to perfection, which is a good thing since he wrote it. Silly but incredibly smart, it's exactly what puts me in awe of his work."
-Will Ferrell

"When I first saw Important Things With Demetri Martin, I said to myself, "this is the funniest thing ever." I was wrong. This Is A Book is better." -Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success

"This book is so funny I forgot to laugh. I know that sounds like a childish criticism, but I mean it literally: This book is so funny, I forgot a whole bunch of things--who I am, what I stand for, large chunks of my childhood, my sense of equilibrium, how to fall asleep, and when I'm supposed to laugh at things."-Chuck Klosterman

"Demetri Martin has a very funny and original mind. If I could draw a graph explaining how funny and original he is, I would. But I don't do that. Demetri does that."-Conan O'Brien

"Throughout, Martin jokes in many guises, silly one moment, barbed the next, and he achieves a satirical brilliance." -Publishers Weekly

"The best [material] would be at home in one of Woody Allen's classic books...Martin has energy to burn." -Kirkus

Brilliiant and funny.
By Jaydoggy
This is one of the most brilliant, intelligent, and hilarious books I've read in a while. It shows Demetri's myriad creative talents. This is not something to read if you're just looking for a quick, cheap laugh. This makes you think and put the pieces together at times. The palindromes along with the massive poem were astounding. His art and drawings made me laugh each time.

Fans may be caught off guard by some material in here. Don't think of it like a comedy standup; it's a book of creative writing and comic musings of different ideas spanning a myriad of eras from the past to future. Some of them are only one line, others are stories that take several pages. Some may even take the form of a short play!

It's uplifting, funny, even dramatic and thought-provoking. It's not your standard comedy book. It's something fresh and different, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Great book, Clever and funny
By Kemuel R. Chavez-vigil
If you stumbled across this book, is because you probably have seen Demetri's show before. I'm not much of a book worm to tell you the truth, but I already read a bit more past the half and let me tell you I'm not dissapointed. Demetri always finds ways to make you think, you really have to have an open mind to understand many of his jokes. Only 3 days with it and nearly done with, I just wished it didn't end, every story, a few sentences, and every drawing brings a laugh or a smile.

Demetri Martin is a hilarious comic, musician and artist. We all know that. But who knew Martin was such a wonderful essayist? These essays could all be in the New Yorker-- they're that sharp and witty. This is a collection I feel like giving to every guy I know. Funny, funny.

From Publishers Weekly
Sparks's 1996 debut novel, The Notebook, was a fast and easy read that sold millions upon millions of copies. Other bestselling love stories followed (Message in a Bottle; A Walk to Remember; The Guardian), but Sparks's fans have from the very beginning eagerly anticipated a sequel to the romantic tale of Allie and Noah Calhoun. The wait is now over. Attorney Wilson Lewis has been married to Noah and Allie's daughter, Jane, for 30 years. Wilson and Jane have raised three children and lived a satisfying and prosperous life in the bucolic town of New Bern, N.C. After forgetting his anniversary, Wilson realizes that the passion and romance have gone out of his marriage and fears his wife no longer loves him. Being a methodical man, he decides to embark on a yearlong program to renew his romantic ties to his wife, seeking out the advice of Noah, who now spends his days in a retirement home feeding a swan he is sure is the reincarnation of his beloved Allie. In the midst of Wilson's machinations, his daughter Anna announces she is getting married. The upcoming wedding provides Wilson with the opportunity to bring his elaborate plan to fruition. Sparks tells his sweet story competently, without sinking too deeply into the mire of sentiment; a gasp-inducing twist comes at the very end. Satisfied female readers will close the covers with a sigh and a wish that a little of the earnest, too-good-to-be-true Wilson might rub off on their own bedmates.

From Booklist
Sparks returns to characters from The Notebook (1996) and writes about Allie and Noah Calhoun's oldest daughter, Jane, and her husband, Wilson. As their thirtieth anniversary approaches, Wilson realizes that he loves Jane now more than ever and worries that his neglect (he completely forgot their twenty-ninth anniversary) may have finally driven her away. Wilson plans on showing Jane how much he loves her, but then their oldest daughter, Anna, announces that she and her boyfriend are getting married and asks if they can plan a small utilitarian wedding on her parents' anniversary. Jane agrees to share the date and convinces Anna to have a formal wedding; something that Jane missed. Jane is surprised by Wilson's willingness to work and ability to come up with truly miraculous arrangements. This sort of involvement is out of character for Wilson, a workaholic estate attorney in New Bern, North Carolina, but he really is determined to change, and Sparks is at his romantic best in this tender love story about a flawed hero trying to right his wrongs. The story is not realistic that the main male character would not only change 360 degrees but would become the best husband in the world. The story line did not develop his character, just turned on a switch.

I have read all of Nicholas Sparks books, but The Wedding did not keep my interest as others had. The theme was boring and fairly predictable. I will continue to read Nicholas Sparks work and hope his other books are different.

Good love story with some ups and downs.
By MKH
Wilson's marriage runs into problems after 30 years. His wife Jane is no longer in love with him. This is devastating to him because his parents have been married for 50 years. He has a hard time showing his feelings. He spent so little time at home. He was always working at the office. He is realizing that now that his marriage in just about over. Jane had to raise her children alone. Now his daughter is going to get married and he is trying to win his wife back. If you liked the Notebook you will love this one also.

In seven bestselling novels (from Relic to The Ice Limit), Preston and Child have delivered a body of science-based thrillers that for high excitement and robust scientific imaginings rival those of Michael Crichton. Their eighth outing is another richly entertaining tale, about the hunt for a seemingly immortal serial killer at work in New York City. Preston and Child revive characters and settings from earlier novels, often a red flag that authorial imagination is tiring; but in this case, all comes together with zing. There's FBI Special Agent Pendergast (from Relic), pale, refined and possessed of a Holmes-like brain; dogged New York Times reporter William Smithback Jr. and his fiery erstwhile girlfriend, Nora Kelly of the New York (read American, where Preston used to work) Museum of Natural History (both characters from Thunderhead with the museum the setting for Relic). The action begins when groundbreaking for an apartment tower in downtown Manhattan reveals a charnel house of murder victims from the late 19th century. Enter Pendergast, who for unexplained reasons taps Kelly to study the remains before the site is stripped by the building's developer, a Donald Trump-type who, with the mayor's backing, will accept no construction delays. As Kelly calls on Smithback for investigative help, the city is struck by killings that duplicate the earlier murders, with the victims' spinal cords ripped away and clues pointing to a 19th-century scientist who sought the secret of immortality. Featuring fabulous locales, colorful characters, pointed riffs on city and museum politics, cool forensic and paleontological speculation and several gripping set pieces including an extended white-knuckle climax, this a great beach novel, at times gruesome, always fun: Preston-Child at the top of their game.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-FBI Special Agent Pendergast needs the talents of Nora Kelly, an archaeologist, and William Smithback, Jr., a researcher and reporter, to track down a serial killer whom he is sure has been stalking his prey since the late-19th century. When a real-estate developer demolishes a building and finds victims of a murderer who killed by tearing out their spinal columns, the three team up to pursue the evil behind the acts. Along the way, they nearly lose their lives as they relentlessly track the killer who, indeed, is still alive at the beginning of the 21st century. Pendergast stands out as a unique character, mysterious in his own right, with almost superhuman strength and endurance, and encyclopedic knowledge, and the human emotions and abilities of his two assistants intensifies interest in them. The authors again weave facts from New York City history with a thriller plot to produce an adventure filled with fast-moving events, gruesome scenes, and enough scary moments to keep the pages turning quickly. Fans of Preston and Child's Relic (Tor, 1996) or Reliquary (Forge, 1997) will enjoy this title as well.

From Library Journal
This absolutely terrific thriller brings together a lot of old friends from previous books: FBI Special Agent Pendergast and New York Times reporter Bill Smithback (Relic and Reliquary), archaeologist Nora Kelly (Thunderhead), and the New York Museum of Natural History (Relic). This time, the historical shenanigans center on a serial killer who operated 130 years ago out of a "Cabinet of Curiosities," a scientific sideshow of sorts that was the 19th-century precursor to natural history museums. With the help of Smithback and Kelly, Agent Pendergast determines that the killer harvested parts from living human beings and distilled them into an elixir that would, in turn, allow him to live forever. It was a gruesome business in 1870, and it is no less terrifying when "copycat" killings start anew in 2002. Could there really be a murderer on the loose for 130 years? This adventure has all the elements of the perfect summer read: the wonderfully spooky atmosphere, the dogged reporter smitten with the lovely scientist, and the mysteriously prescient FBI agent. Authors Preston and Child have been hot since Relic, and here they score another big winner. Highly recommended for all fiction collections. Rebecca House Stankowski, Purdue Univ. Second reading as good as the first time...
By grandma23
The Cabinet of Curiosities is the third novel in the Agent Pendergast series. I am a huge fan of this series and this is the 2nd time I'm reading this novel. I started reading this series before I bought my first Kindle and I thought that it was time to add it to my Kindle library. What makes these stories unique is that Agent Pendergast is not your usual FBI agent. He is a wealthy Southern born gentleman with a knack for finding and solving very unusual cases in very unusual ways. This one in particular hits home with him because the criminal is over one hundred years old and may be related to him and his family. Even for the second reading I'm still on the edge of my seat and enjoying it all over again. Give this and the other novels surrounding the unique Agent Pendergast a try, you won't to disappointed.

intelligent thriller, great settings and characters
By audrey frances
This is the first book I've read by this writing team, though it will not be my last. Preston and Child work well together, and I'm interested in reading their solo work as well.

In this not-quite-contemporary setting (only one person has a cell phone, for instance), New Orleans FBI Special Agent Pendergast is inexplicably interested in the recent discovery of a charnel beneath a New York construction site. He builds a team of assistants: Nora Kelly, Utahan archaeologist determined to make a go of her once-in-a-lifetime chance at working at the world's greatest natural history museum; William Smithback, reporter aching for a Pulitzer (and a suit worthy of the acceptance ceremony); Patrick O'Shaughnessy, a sergeant in the NY Police Department, fifth generation cop at the mercy of a cruel and petty precinct captain; Proctor, his invisible and indispensable chauffeur.

These main characters, excepting Proctor, are well fleshed out and engaging, while Pendergast himself is an intriguing variant on the Sherlock Holmes-style detective. (These characters appear in other books by the same authors.) A healthy field of minor characters are also three-dimensional. Settings are vivid and evocative. Dialogue flows naturally. And bonus -- I even learned a little about urban archaeology and the scientific/fantastical collections of the title.

Very well done. I'm anxious to read more from these authors and to read more about these characters. If you are interested in an intelligent thriller rooted in NYC history, you will probably enjoy this too. If you like Caleb Carr, Iain Pears or Jack Finney, you will likely appreciate this masterful and gripping mystery.

Best Pendergast Book
By MATT
I have read all of the Pendergast novels and other various Preston/Child works and find myself always thinking of this one as my favorite. Although I like the "Diogenes Trilogy" (Brimstone, Dance of Death and Book of the Dead), this one seemed to really work my imagination better. It was more mentaly stimulating for lack of a better phrase.

One of the reasons I liked this book so much is because although the idea of Enoch Leng's "work" is a little far fetched, it isn't quite as out there as the Relic/Reliquary monsters. Things are more believable and therefore seem more realistic.

Without saying too much, I liked the way that they linked Pendergast to the story to add more substance to his family's "affliction." It also a better way for him to involve himself in a case than the way he takes special interest in odd cases like in "Still Life with Crows." This way, he has a personal interest in the case.

Lastly, this book goes to show Pendergast more human and less superhero than in others. In this book he goes through some rough spots and it's good to see him not getting through things unscathed but have to work hard.

Overall a great book and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys the Pendergast books or has enjoyed other Preston/Child works.

Amazon.com Review
Sean Drummond is a cocky Army lawyer with a long history in the secret world of special operations. When the legal maverick is assigned by the top brass to investigate a Bosnian massacre in which a Green Beret A-team and the Kosovo Liberation Army detachment they were "advising" got trapped behind Serbian lines, he gets the subtext that's part of his orders. What the Army doesn't need are headlines about the cold-blooded execution of 35 Serbian soldiers, and they're counting on Drummond to clean things up fast, before a public scandal blows dirt all over their medals. Drummond is provided with two associates to help with the investigation: an attractive young woman captain who's a Harvard Law School graduate, and an equally illustrious Judge Army General's Corps lawyer whose reputation precedes him.

Once Drummond and his team get to Bosnia, it's clear that the accused Green Berets have their own cover-up going, and they're not going to make it easy for the lawyers to figure out what happened. Drummond has a few tricks up his own sleeve, and when he finds out that his CO has put a spy on his team, he's even more determined to get to the bottom of what really went on, even if he has to bully his way out of a murder frame-up to do it. The moral dilemma Drummond faces when he learns the real story (and understands why the Army is so desperate to keep the cover-up going) reveals the man behind the maverick, and lifts Brian Haig's novel a cut above the genre. Haig might have spent more time making his secondary characters as interesting as his protagonist and tightened up his narrative. Still, fans of military thrillers will find this a good enough read. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Brian Haig, son of former secretary of state Alexander Haig, takes aim at the bestseller lists with Secret Sanction, a military/legal thriller set against the backdrop of the Bosnian conflict. Hotshot army lawyer Sean Drummond is assigned to investigate the massacre of 35 Serbian soldiers, apparently by a team of Green Berets. He encounters resistance from the brass right away and the deeper he digs, the worse it gets. Sexual tension with army defense attorney Lisa Morrow and the execution-style death of a reporter who's covering the case add to the high-stakes excitement. If blurbs by Jack Higgins and Jeffery Deaver are any indication, this one's going to be a hit.

From Library Journal
In Kosovo, 35 Serbian soldiers have been massacred in cold blood, and an American Special Forces unit is suspected of the crime. With the world looking on, Maj. Sean Drummond heads a small investigating team and confronts murder, cover-ups, and pressures to rush to a judgment that Drummond feels is wrong. This first novel by the son of former Secretary of State Alexander Haig is a fast-paced and exciting story of an ugly little war in which there are very few rules and nothing is black or white. Haig skillfully blends multiple layers of threat, blood feud, and collusion, as well as murder, race hatred, vengeance, and mutiny. Apart from his overlong fleshing out of central character Drummond, Haig has fashioned an excellent military legal thriller in the tradition of Herman Wouk's classic The Caine Mutiny and John Katzenbach's Hart's War. Snappy dialogue
By Bill Zahren
Haig does a great job of using dialogue to create crisp, distinct characters. If you like snappy dialog, you'll like this book. At times it seems like 85% or more of the book is people talking. This is a great inside-the-military suspense story. My only qualm is that sometimes the snappy give and take goes on a bit long, causing the book to bog down a bit. Toward the end I found myself skipping past some of the repartee just to move it along. I also found the resolution a touch predictable/anti-climatic. Still, the characters crackle and the protagonist is definitely unique and different from others in the genre. I'll definitely read the next in the series.

Very Enjoyable Audio Book
By Priscilla
I bought this audio book after reading all of the Amazon reviews. At the same time I ordered this book from Amazon I ordered his other 3 books after reading all of the reviews about them. I won't bother to rehash the plot line since so many reviewers have already done that. As suggested by several reviewers I will read them in the order that they were written. Even though the books are not a continuation of each other, it was suggested it was better to read them in order since some of the same characters return. I have to say that at first I thought the book would be boring in that I have absolutely no interest in the military. Turns out it was not the least bit boring and it was a great mystery that just happened to have a military plotline. I can't wait to listen to the second book (Mortal Allies) which I will start on my drive home tonight. I am always happy when I find a new writer to listen to. Since I listen to so many audio books it is imperative to point out that no matter how good the book is if the person reading the book isn't also very good the audio book turns into a dud. As soon as I started listening to John Rubinstein (the reader of this book) I realized I had heard this voice many times before and that he was one of my favorite readers. Then I realized he is the reader of a lot of Jonathan Kellerman's books. If you like audio books, another great "reader" is Joe Mantegna. He has been the "reader" of a lot of different authors including Elmore Leonard. They don't get any better than him.

Well Worth Your Time And Money!
By bobbewig
Brian Haig (son of Alexander Haig) is a fresh new "voice" in popular fiction. His style of writing -- part witty, part sarcastic and always interesting -- makes Secret Sanction a book to put near the top of your "To Be Read" list. I think you'll be captivated by the story (which moves along at a very crisp pace), the characters ( which are believable and multi-dimensional), and Haig's knowledge of military honor, tradition and politics. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to Haig's first effort. There's no doubt in my mind that you'll like Secret Sanction a lot and be looking forward to Haig's next book. The only reason I didn't rate the book a "5" is that I anticipated the ending a little too far in advance of where I would have liked, since the earlier reviews I read on Amazon led me to believe the ending was a major surprise. However, the actual rating level here is not really that relevant. What is relevant is that this is a book you'll be glad to read.

Amazon.com Review
Two disgraced former Secret Service officers team up to solve a series of copy-cat crimes in this exciting new thriller by a master of the game. Sean King was momentarily distracted when a presidential candidate he'd been guarding was assassinated a few feet from where he stood, and Michelle Maxwell left the Service under a similar cloud when she lost a "protectee" to an ingenious kidnapping scheme, events told in Baldacci's typical terse, fast-paced style in Split Second. Now partners in a private investigation firm in a small Virginia town, they're hired to investigate a burglary at the home of a wealthy local family. But even before the chief suspect in the break-in meets his death in a gruesome slaying reminiscent of a serial killer long since caught and punished, King and Maxwell get caught up in a string of other murders, each of which copies the techniques of another madman, from San Francisco's Zodiac Killer to Chicago's infamous John Wayne Gacy. While the two protagonists aren't especially complex or well-developed, the action never stops, and Baldacci's trademark pacing keeps the reader turning pages until the denouement, which unfortunately isn't quite as satisfying as the rest of the novel. --Jane Adams

Why Hour Game: An Exclusive Essay by David Baldacci

It's hard not to notice that the majority of fictional serial killers are cut from the same mold. When David Baldacci wrote Hour Game, he went out of his way to create a murderous original. Read this Amazon.com exclusive essay to learn how and why he did it.

From Publishers Weekly
Baldacci's last book, Split Second, was a relatively weak offering from this bestselling author, sunk by a cartoonish villain and absurd plot. But it did introduce two of Baldacci's (Absolute Power, etc.) most memorable characters, former Secret Service agents Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, in business together as private investigators in smalltown Wrightsburg, Va. Baldacci is back in form, and King and Maxwell reappear in this utterly absorbing, complex mystery-thriller that spins in unexpected directions. The novel starts as a serial-killer thriller, for there's a murderer at work in Wrightsburg whose selection of victims appears random but whose modus operandi, differing from kill to kill, mimics the work of a notorious serial killer—the Zodiac killer, John Wayne Gacy, etc. The fifth victim is local resident and international tycoon Robert E. Lee Battle. King and Maxwell have already been tangling with the gothic horror show of a dysfunctional Southern family that is the Battles, as they've been hired to help prove the innocence of a Battle handyman accused of stealing from the family. Then that handyman is murdered, and the duo (along with a clueless local sheriff and an obnoxious FBI agent) must race to figure out if the same killer is behind all the murders and, if so, why. There are terrific action sequences sprinkled throughout, and plenty of suspense, and the King/Maxwell relationship, while not romantic, emits sparks. It's Baldacci's portrayal of smalltown Southern life, however, and his sharp characterizations of the Battles, from the bombastic Bobby and his regal widow to his weird extended family, that give the novel texture and depth: this is Baldacci's most accomplished tale since his nonthriller Wish You Well, and it rivals that novel in its social commentary. Despite fair clues, few if any readers will ID the villain (villains?) before they're revealed, and a snappy surprise ending will have Baldacci's many fans remembering why they love this author so much.

From Booklist
Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, the former Secret Service agents from Baldacci's previous outing, Split Second (2003), are on the trail of a serial killer in this new novel. King and Maxwell have just gone into business together as private investigators when Michelle discovers the body of a young woman in the woods. The body was posed with a wristwatch stopped at 1:00. Two high-school students are the next victims; both have watches on their wrists--the boy's reads 2:00, the girl's 3:01. King and Maxwell aid the police while working on their own case: a burglary in the house of Remmy Battle, a wealthy, tough southerner whose husband, Bobby, lies in a coma at the local hospital. The prime suspect is Junior Deaver, whose fingerprints are found at the crime scene. But Junior swears he's innocent. The victim list keeps growing: a successful high-powered lawyer and then Bobby Battle himself. Soon King begins to suspect that the serial killer might not be choosing his victims at random, and he believes one of the murders is the work of a different killer. The plot doesn't hold together perfectly, even starting out a bit slow, but it recovers to build to an exciting finish. Kristine Huntley

Great book
By Kindle Customer
I liked the protaganists.. Well developed characters;. many twists. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I discovered I was wrong. Then I thought I had it figured out and it seemed the first thought was correct but it was not. It went on this way all the way to the end. It was definitely not predictable. I recommend this book to readers who like to be thoughtfully challenged.

Disappointing
By Amazon Customer
I usually really enjoy David Baldacci, but this book was a huge disappointment. I almost quit reading at the beginning due to the gorey description of the first murder scene. Those types of descriptions don't usually bother me, but this one seemed to be worse than most. Add the multiple scenes in the morgue and the description of the smells and it was enough to completely turn me off.

There were also too many plots and subplots going on, many of which were really irrelevant to the 'hour game' the murderer was playing.

I have to admit, however, that I did enjoy a few of the surprises that came toward the end, although I wish the characters involved would have been more central to the story. While it all fit together nicely in the end, the story would have been more interesting with a bit more foreshadowing tieing some of the secondary characters into the story more closely early in the book.

It was OK, but not up to Baldacci's usual standards.

I would rate the series 5 stars, but book 2 was not my favorite of the series, the plot moves in too many directions. Nonetheless, I would highly encourage all to read the series as it is action packed, suspenseful and romantic...EXCELLENT READING!

Mother's Day, by Patricia Macdonald

In a quiet New England town, the Newhalls live an uneventful life with their adopted daughter. When the child's birth mother is murdered, the first suspect is the adoptive father. The author of The Unforgiven and No Way Home delivers a complex, emotionally intense "family-in-peril" thriller.

From Publishers Weekly
Thirteen-year-old Jenny Newhall is a normal adolescent: bright, big-hearted and snappish to her adoptive mother. Jenny's birth mother, teenager Linda Emery, hid her pregnancy and disappeared from her home in Massachusetts, leaving grieving relatives to assume she had been killed. Now, when Linda shows up unannounced on the Newhall's doorstep on Mother's Day, skeletons clatter from closets all over town, and soon Linda's bloodied body turns up in a dumpster. Suspicion points to Jenny's adoptive father, Greg, who evades arrest and goes underground, trying to unravel clues that could make his family whole again. The police investigation headed by laconic loner Walter Ference exposes infidelity, sexual extortion and the key to an earlier murder. MacDonald, an Edgar award nominee for The Unforgiven , digs with relish into the town's secrets and its stockpile of hot emotions--betrayal, rejection, anger, jealousy and unrequited lust--pushing the buttons that titillate readers but failing to cohere into a focused narrative. The suspense she generates is disappointingly stop-and-go, loosening its hold too quickly after each revelation and falling away into mundane details.

From Library Journal
Karen Newhall's Mother's Day is upset when her adopted daughter Jenny's birth mother appears on her doorstep. But her whole life is capsized two days later when the woman is found murdered and Karen's husband, Greg, is the prime suspect--because, he admits, he had an extramarital affair with the victim 14 years earlier and Jenny is actually his real daughter. The news of the affair devastates Karen, and when Greg escapes from police custody, she begins to wonder if he also lied about the murder. MacDonald supplies plenty of suspects in her large cast of characters and then provides a satisfying, albeit predictable, ending. She has written several mass-market best sellers, including No Way Home (Dell, 1990), and this new entry will be welcomed by her fans. Recommended. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 11/1/93.

From Booklist
Take a peaceful, picture-postcard small town, peel back the layers of tranquillity and neighborliness, and chances are you'll expose a roiling cauldron of sleaze and slime. MacDonald finds exactly that in her latest novel, a gripping thriller that's bursting with suspense and drama. Wayland, Massachusetts, residents Karen and Greg Newhall adopted a baby girl 13 years ago. Now their daughter is a beautiful young lady; Karen and Greg feel their lives are complete . . . until, out of the blue, Jenny's biological mother, Linda Emery, appears. Linda grew up in Wayland, then simply disappeared one day. Her family never heard from her again and gave her up for dead. Her return provokes more distress than happiness and sets off a chain of events that turns grisly when Linda is murdered--only the first in a series of shocking events that will turn the town upside down. MacDonald grabs her readers on page one and keeps them turning pages until the satisfying if predictable ending. And if her dialogue, plot, and characters occasionally turn trite, the keep-'em-guessing suspense makes up for it. This one will be popular, so buy plenty. Emily Melton

Rather Average Compared to MacDonald's Other Works
By Shadow Reviewer
"Mother's Day", made into a movie with "Trapper John" actor Gregory Harrison, was rather blase compared to Ms. MacDonald's other works. What made it particularly sad was the emphasis so many place on biological parenthood rather than on those who have really taken the time to parent a child. If I'm not mistaken, as it's been awhile since I've read this, POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT, there's a part towards the end that makes the now 13 year old daughter an eligible blood donor for her AB parent.

I realize it's been awhile since I first became an eligible blood donor at age 17, and maybe the eligible age has now been lowered, but 13?! Rather strains the credibility, and AB is the universal recipient blood type, meaning that parent wouldn't need his very young daughter necessarily to roll up her sleeve.

So far, three mystery authors have made errors in what really is a simple science. Would make for better reading if they researched the genetics of ABO/Rh blood grouping & rules of blood banking before including it in the story line.

Heart-Pounding Suspense
By A Customer
Mother's Day hooked me right away with its vivid character descriptions and the sense of doom that hung over them. First off, there's the body of the girl found in the river. Then, as soon as Jenny Newhall (adopted daughter of main characters Greg and Karen Newhall) didn't show up for the Mother's Day brunch, the reader knows right away that something is amiss. Then when Jenny's real mother Linda appears, the reader is drawn even further into the lives of the characters. Everyone is shocked and confused. But someone knows why Linda is back. Someone knows her connections from long ago, and now the danger REALLY begins for everyone!
MacDonald's description of the characters, specifically their emotions, helps to draw the reader in: Karen's love for Jenny, Jenny's happiness at meeting her birth mother....and eventually Karen and Jenny's total fear, anger, and terror at the secrets they learn. The hatred of the killer and the final scenes of the book are very intense, and will make your heart pound! The ending was shocking, a total surprise.
An excellent book for those who love suspense and mystery!

While this book is not quite what I expected, in that it is not 'just' The Diary of Jack the Ripper, in fact, the diary part is very small; the book does show exactly how research was done on the paper, the ink etc., what laboratories were used and what professional people were brought in to verify that this 'diary' was indeed the 'real thing'.

Since the 'diary' was published, and verified, things have come to light and confessions have been made to discredit the diary as being the 'real thing'. However, much new information that had never before been published about Jack the Ripper were verified in the book.

All-in-all, the 'diary' is an interesting book and, one that I think would be much at home in any Ripperologist's library - whether the book is a fake or not.

Rules to live by
By Patricia J. Haefner
This books was recommended by my Business Ethics professor and it was awesome. The author is so right. There isn't Business Ethics, but just Ethics that we should all live by but quite honestly don't. If more people lived ethically the world wouldn't be in the mess it is in right now.

The Golden Rule Explained and Improved Upon
By Donald Mitchell
In the aftermath of the many corporate scandals of the last two years, most people are looking for a way to reintroduce ethics into the companies they work for and invest in. In the process, some enthusiasts for ethical behavior have created whole libraries of do's and don'ts that tend to confuse the issue. What's the answer?
Dr. John C. Maxwell proposes a simple idea: Ethics is the same for all parts of one's life, whether in business or personal activities. "Asking the question 'How would I like to be treated in this situation?' is an integrity guideline for any situation." He builds on that standard to suggest an even higher one, something he calls "developing the Midas Touch." Your goal is to exceed the Golden Rule:
1. Treat people better than they treat you.
2. Walk the second mile (do more than just going the extra mile).
3. Help people who can't help you.
4. Do right when it is natural to do wrong.
5. Keep your promises even when it hurts.
If we all did this, our world would be filled with an abundance of kindness and goodness that would enrich each of us much more than any material possessions could.
Although I was certainly familiar with the Golden Rule, my understanding of it deepened greatly from reading this book. As an example, I think about the rule as "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That gets me to thinking about what I am going to do to them before I think about what I would want in that situation. Dr. Maxwell's rephrasing gets me to thinking about what the ideal thing is to do before I consider the other person. That improved my ability to think of good solutions even though the concept is unchanged by the rephrasing.
He also addresses the fact that most people cut corners in an ethical sense, but are very critical of others who do. So there is some hypocritical thinking to address in this area.
Each chapter has questions at the end that readers can use to explore and develop their own thinking. I thought these questions were the most valuable parts of the book, and helped bring the lessons home to me.
I was also impressed to see the research about how the major religions all have their version of the Golden Rule, so this is something that almost everyone believes in.
But, most of us could use some more help to understand what others would like to see us do. The book has many fine sections that talk about the values that people would like to see honored in following the Golden Rule.
The book is also filled with simple business examples that were new to me. One of my favorites is the firm that keeps full employment by eliminating the owner's salaries when times are tough.
You could improve your understanding of ethical behavior over a lifetime by considering and reconsidering this fine book. What are you waiting for?
