Files's attempt at a Waiting to Exhale is an amusingly superficial but mainly unrealistic sequel to her first book, Scenes from a Sistah, about the same couple of flawlessly beautiful good-time "ghetto" girls living it up in New York City. "Corporate bigwig" Misty Fine has become romantically involved with and ultimately engaged to her boss, Rick, leaving her best "sistah," dancer Reesy Snowden, resentful and wondering what she wants for her own life. Reesy lands the lead in Black Barry's Pie, an off-Broadway musical, and her fantastically successful stage career is launched. Reesy's narration leans heavily on urban slang, which becomes tiresome. Her escapades are entertaining, though outrageously inconceivable, as she hops from one fine lover to another (apparently heedless of AIDS), receives the gift of a Porsche from a boyfriend and even drunkenly flirts with Wesley Snipes?who just happens to be eating at the same restaurant. Reesy's relentlessly silly chatter reveals her as little more than shallow and mean-spirited: though Misty "was always complaining that she didn't have the high, round sistah booty I'd been strapped with, it apparently never stopped her from getting any play." The result is a perfunctory performance clearly angling for the movies. Author tour.

EXCELLENT

One of the worst things about writing a sequel is the author MUST make it as good as if not better than the first one. Ms. Files passed the test. I was happy that Reesy was our potaganist this time around and we were allowed to get into this WILD girl's head. At times I felt she was acting like a 22 year old rather than a 32 year old, but I was impressed with her development throughout the book. Inside her tough as nails "hand in your face" sister-girl deameanor, she was a very emotional and sensitive person. I literally cried tears with her as she discovered a love lost. Ms. Files did an EXCELLENT descriptive job of putting Reesy in touch with her feelings. There's not a woman out there who can't relate to this type of love and pain. It was emotionally real.
We saw a different side of Misty in this story as well. Her character wasn't quite as developed as Reesy's, but her maturity was evident.
I loved the way Ms. Files ended the book on a closed note, not leaving the readers looking for more. EXCELLENT is all I can say.

FUNNY, LAUGH OUT LOUD BUT IMPRACTIBLE ENDING

I thought this book was absolutely hilarious.The characters actually reminded me of some "sistah" girlfriends that I have. In that respect, it was pretty realistic and authentic. From a practical standpoint however, I thought the ending was somewhat impractical. The basis of the relationship between Dandre and Neesy ( from her perspective at least) was one based on deception, manipulation and revenge. Based on her behavior with Helmut, there was no reason for Dandre to trust Reesy again. In real life, she would have been SOL! The most poignant line in the book was when Dandre says to Neesy " I'm saddened by the fact that I believed in something that was never really there. I hate to think that a part of me that was once very trusting and very much alive will never be that way again". I think the ending would have been better and more realistic if it had been consistent with the above statement.

Got to the good part... it was worth the wait!

She's back... "Reesy" Snowden narrates this sequel to "Scenes from a Sistah". She tells a much more colorful and drama-filled story than you could imagine. It felt like I was watching an R-rated film with lots of suspense, romance and drama. The sistahs and brothas are fun and full of entertainment.
I enjoyed this novel even more than "Scenes..." because Reesy tells a more exciting story! She is full of laughs and imagery. Although the language was often too vulgar, I was able to accept it as part of her racy, risque, and raw character. Nevertheless, I loved Reesy even more for opening her heart and her mouth to give of herself even when it hurt.
This is a good read about good friends who endure much love, pain, and ultimate joy!

How is America tied into ancient biblical prophecies? According to author Michael Evans, a fundamentalist Christian minister, biblical prophets already predicted that America is doomed to collapse unless its government stops accommodating the Arab world for the sake of oil and instead offers full military and diplomatic support to Israel. He believes that God wants Israel to have full control of the West Bank and Gaza, and Americans are risking God's wrath by not fully supporting this biblical mandate. Evans also theorizes that much of America's problems--including the attack of 9-11--are indications of God's fury over America's split allegiance between the two famous descendents of Abraham: Ishmael and Isaac. "We are caught in a tug of war between two brothers--between oil, political expedience, and conscience in many ways--and it our decisions and polices concerning these two brothers that will determine whether the United States will survive or go the way of the Roman Empire," he writes. Evans's prophetic foundation begins with the parable of the fig tree (Matthew 24:32-44), in which he interprets the various signs Jesus gave his disciples to mark "the final age and his return." Obviously, the Bible can be interpreted many ways, and Evans uses 17 chapters to weave in interpretations of scripture that support his theory that America faces a mammoth choice--ruin or salvation. Although actual quotes from scripture are rather sparse throughout the book, he concludes with a five-page index of "Ancient Prophecies" that indirectly support his theory. One caveat--Evans (Beyond Iraq) does not hide his vehement anti-Muslim leanings. This book will probably be offensive to Christians who practice religious tolerance and lean toward a more-inclusive solution to American diplomacy in the Middle East. --Gail Hudson

Does America have an explicit role in biblical prophecy? Absolutely, says Evans, a journalist and popular Christian speaker who has come to believe that America is at a crossroads predicted in the Bible. Speaking from a deeply conservative perspective that lauds unqualified support of Israel and decries the "myth that Islam is a peaceful religion," Evans explains that the only reason why Islamic terrorists hate Americans is "simply because they hate us"-an unconvincing tautological argument that ignores the history of several ill-advised U.S. interventions in the Middle East. In 17 chapters, Evans employs a rather tortured biblical hermeneutic to persuade readers of the need for war in Iraq-and a future war with Syria-as well as for stepped-up support for Israel to conform with biblical prophecy. He often ties Muslims with Nazis, arguing that Muslims have adopted Hitler’s campaign to exterminate Jews. This book may resonate with ultra-conservative readers who already believe that America is the center of the cosmos. Other Christians will be alarmed by the way it promotes hate-filled stereotypes of Muslims even while it argues that Muslims are dangerous precisely because they promote hate-filled stereotypes of Jews.

Evans, whose last book, Beyond Iraq (2003), tied biblical prophecies to the current war, here ascribes the hostilities between Arabs and Jews to the ancient sibling rivalry of Abraham's sons: Ishmael, from whom the Arab world descends, and Isaac, a patriarch of the Jews. Evans believes that the U.S., if it expects to receive God's blessing, should side unequivocally with Israel and shun Arab countries despite the lure of oil. Readers will react to the author's theologically driven politics according to their own beliefs, but Evans does offer an interesting history of the relationship between Jews and the U.S. from the earliest days of this country (Haym Salomon was one of the chief financiers of the revolution). In a chapter entitled "Treason," Evans flays Bill Clinton for pressing for a deal between Israel and the PLO. Yet on the topic of the Bush family's well-documented relationship with the Saudi royal family, he is conspicuously reticent. Fans of LaHaye and Jenkins' Left Behind series will be clamoring for this incendiary but sure-to-be-popular work. Ilene Cooper

Everyone who cares about America's future must read!!!!!

Those who vehemently oppose this book either do not find the holy Word of God to be true and accurate or they or are not willing to consider what role America will play in the soon coming future. While there are always uncertainties in the future, I for one am not willing to put my head in the sand or deny the realities of the world we live in. The simple fact is we all need Jesus, He is the only truth, and He is coming back to reign over His creation SOON. The biblical prophesies will come to pass whether or not we believe them. Many of them have already been fulfilled.

I find this book to be historically accurate and very interesting. History does repeat itself therefore why shouldn't we consider the past as we look toward the future.

As I have read most of the reviews of one and two stars, it became apparent to me that many have totally missed the whole point of this book. Yes, God is a just and loving God. He is Love. However, He will judge His creation - that includes you and me. We all will give an account. We all have a part to play and personally, I hope that more and more of us get the point. We must consider ourselves - the condition of our souls. We all should be aware of what the author is saying so that we can soberly examine ourselves and take a godly, righteous position. "The prayers of a righteous man avails much". How can we pray if we're not informed? That my fellow souls IS the point of this book!!!

Losing a bit of steam, still picking up complexity...

Yes, I know that the series should be considered as a whole, and that "Parts 1 and 2" of each of the three subsections of the series, should be considered as one book. Nevertheless, each book is separate and can be reviewed as such.

This is not an easy series to read. I started almost a year ago and I don't have as much time as I would like to just sit down and read. You might want to add at least 1 star to my review if you can sit down and read novels more or less straight through, as most of my complaints have to do with complexity, number of threads and number of characters to keep straight.

In truth, the number of threads appears to be whittled down to 5 or 6, with the chapters (each roughly 50-70 pages) focusing on 2 or so of the threads. Generally not too much time passes for the reader before a thread is picked up again, so with relatively regular reading, things stay pretty coherent.

Some characters do disappear for quite some time though, and new ones continue to be introduced. One of the complaints I have with this series is indeed the sheer number of characters, including some (specifically thinking of the brother of one of the main characters) who appear to be a major plot twist, only to become 'just part of a group'. Given that there's one more book to go, some of these characters may indeed become important, but right now the sense is that Hamilton may have thought he had a cool idea for them, but then realized he just couldn't fit them into the overall story (or complete said story in 6 books) if he fully fleshed out their intended role. The number of characters is also exacerbated by some of the characters inhabiting more than one body, or other characters containing two personalities (I won't give more away in case people reading this review haven't read the first few books). The cast of characters in the first section of the book, takes up at least 4 (maybe 6 pages).

The editing in this book is poorer than in the others with a noticeable number of typos. The author still uses the annoying habit of switching points of view between people in a scene (ie, Person A is thinking about something as he walks down a hallway, interacting with other people. He enters a room, sees someone, and then the point of view switches without any physical break - chapter, one line of white space, etc - to the person he just saw).

All this said, the story itself appears to be growing a bit tighter and yet, not quite as interesting. Part of the problem comes from Hamilton feeling a need to describe EVERYTHING in his universe to the reader, even things which have no real impact on the plot itself. Most of these items that are imparted end up of no interest and are forgotten quickly. Some however make me wish the plot focused more on them, and not on the parts that Hamilton chose to focus on. So while the main plot threads appear to be heading towards something important, I as the reader, find myself wondering if he'll ever come back to some things that I think are more interesting.

One thing that Hamilton DOES do quite well, is to make his characters stand out. With the sheer number of characters, a surprising number of them have a very distinctive personality, in sharp contrast to other novels with far fewer characters who all feel the same. The story itself is still interesting but I have a feeling that things might get resolved too quickly (or not at all) given some of the hints I've been picking up from this novel (and the fact that there's only 1/6th of the series left to finish everything off).

This review probably doesn't do much for people who've started reading. Either they didn't continue after the first book or two, or they have too much invested to not finish. By itself, this book is really nothing too special. The newness of the fictional universe has faded. The stories are interesting but nothing spectacular, and the author seems to spend more time on continuing to add complexity to them as opposed to just telling them well. There's no doubt this series is an impressive achievement. For me the series is worth reading. This novel is just an average part of that series though.

Tension really starts to ratchet as we near the finale of the series - one book left after this one!

"The Naked God: Flight - Part 1" can be considered to be either book 5 or book 3a, depending on how you are counting this series. This is the book where all the strings are finally starting to come together; all the plot lines are starting to converge - and the reader can finally start to see exactly where Hamilton is trying to take us. Maybe. Sort of. In a way.

The truth of the matter is, that this series is so long, with so many characters and such a complex plot line, that this reader, at least, will likely have to read it more than once to really grok it deep down. However, things are starting to come together, at least for the characters in the book!

Ombey has started its liberation campaign for Mortonridge. Capone has either taken over or subverted enough planets to where he can now feel safe in the New California system and settle back to making things run smoothly there. The possessed on Norfolk - settled in their new "universe" - are settling in nicely - unaware that the changes they are forcing upon their host's bodies with their energistic power are causing cancers to form. Louise Kavanaugh reaches Earth and sets about to track down Banneth. We finally meet Banneth and learn a bit about this mysterious personage. Quinn ratchets up his campaign to bring the Night to Earth and to especially make life miserable for Banneth. Joseph is tapped by Ione - along with Mzu and Syrinx and Oenone - to try to track down the Tyrathca's Sleeping God. Keira - not one to sit and cry over spilled milk - doesn't let the loss of Valisk slow her down; she immediately makes the hellhawks dependent on her for their fuel and thereby strengthens her position with Capone's organization - and begins scheming to take over. We learn about a mysterious group of "supervisors" who apparently manipulate events on Earth and have great power over said events - shades of Big Brother!! And that's just skimming the surface of what happens in the text.

Written with Hamilton's typical attention to detail and sense of pacing, this is another prime example of why he continues to be such a superb storyteller. If you are a fan of epic stories, sci-fi or space opera, definitely give this one a go.

Finale to the series: "Deus ex Machina"

The back cover of the book (book 6 or 3b, at any respects, the series finale) has in big letters "Deus ex Machina" and that about sums it up.

Things are building to a frightening level all around the Confederation. More planets are withdrawing from the Universe. The Liberation of Mortonbridge seems to be creating more problems than it has solved, as the newly freed victims of possession are emaciated and riddled with cancerous tumors. Earth is being taken over by the possessed thanks to Quinn Dexter and there seems to be no way of stopping him short of destroying the arcologies thus infested. Keira, in the Mindori (the hellhawk possessed by Etchells) has followed Joseph across the galaxy and is close to destroying all chances of getting the information necessary for finding the Sleeping God, the last hope of resolving this peacefully. The Core planets of the Confederation (read: the wealthy ones) want to basically secede from the Confederation and form their own, "core" Confederation, abandoning the newer (read: poorer) planets to the possessed, so they can save themselves and (supposedly) focus on the problem.

Meanwhile, in other dimensions, Valisk is losing its battles with the Orgathe and entropy. Ketton, taken away on just a few kilometers of dirt, is quickly losing its air supply and food. And on Norton, the people are realizing the terrible price their bodies are paying for their vanity.

What WILL the answer be? As I got closer and closer to the end of the book, I started sneaking glances to see just how many more pages were left, thinking "how on earth can they wrap this up in so few pages?"

Deus ex Machina.

I don't wish to spoil it for those who haven't read it, so that's all I'll say.

About the series: Overall, I enjoyed the series. Like all of Hamilton's work, it is intricately plotted and filled with characters who have full histories and lives. Even the possessors whom we meet are given a bit of history so that we can relate to them. Hamilton has a unique way of characterization that brings his characters to life with a minimum of exposition, allowing the story to continue unfolding. I do not regret purchasing or reading this series; it was time well-spent. However, those who might wish for a more ... person-related solution to the problems presented in the story might be disappointed by the ending; since humanity as a whole couldn't come up with a solution to the problem (and, in fact, were close to imploding), it was up to "one man, one noble man" to make the decisions that affected all of humanity. I'm not saying that is bad, I'm just saying that will bother some people.

Most of these books I've given 4 or 5 stars to; I'd give the series a solid 4 stars overall. For those who enjoy a good, strong story, this is definitely a must-read.

Daily Disciplines to Keep You on the Path to Success

Can you expect to win a gold medal in the Olympics if you start preparing the day of the try outs for your country's team? Probably not.
In the same way, each of us needs to develop ourselves spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socially if we want to accomplish more in the future. Many books take one aspect of life and suggest daily activities to strengthen that part of one's life. Dr. John C. Maxwell has taken that important idea further in this book and suggested what you need to do each day in 12 different areas.
The 12 areas are:
Choose and display the right attitude
Determine and act on important priorities
Know and follow healthy guidelines
Communicate with and care for your family
Practice and develop good thinking
Make and keep proper commitments
Make and properly manage your money
Deepen and live out your spiritual faith
Initiate and invest in solid personal relationships
Plan for and model being generosity
Embrace and practice good values
Seek out and embrace personal improvements.
Each section comes with negative and positive examples so you understand the point Dr. Maxwell is trying to make. I often found the negative examples to be more instructive than the positive ones. I don't want to be like those people!
At the end of each section are a series of questions to help you make the decisions and take the actions you need to do to accomplish what you want to in life. So, you're not modeling on what Dr. Maxwell does specifically . . . but rather turning a spotlight into areas he's found to be valuable in his own, very successful life.
I often marvel at how much Dr. Maxwell accomplishes. He writes lots of books. He gives many speeches. He trains enormous numbers of leaders. He inspires millions more. For a long time, I've wondered what the discipline was like that he uses. Now that I have read this book, I know. And I'm very impressed. This is a level of self-discipline and focus that I had never considered before.
Mid-way through the book, I found myself becoming intimidated by all that needs to be done . . . and began to despair if I was up to the challenge. It was with a great sense of relief that I found this problem addressed in the conclusion to the book. Rather than attacking the whole Mount Everest of opportunity for daily self-discipline all at once, he suggests starting with two areas where you are doing well and one where you are not. Then, switch focus as you get one of the areas you have been working on where you want to get it. I think that's a reasonable plan, and only wish he had suggested that approach in the beginning of the book.
Personally, the book would have worked better for me if I had read it in this order: faith, values, attitude, thinking, growth, health, family, relationships, commitment, generosity, finances and priorities. I suspect that the right order for you will be different from either Dr. Maxwell's or mine. The book is modular enough that you can reorder your reading of the chapters after the first two to provide a focus that fits with the way you like to organize your thinking and actions. I encourage you to do so.
Although this book will make a tremendous difference in your life, it will make even more difference if you share and discuss it with those you love and care about. So be generous in sharing this remarkable volume.

I've read this book cover to cover twice and it was even better the second time! I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to grow as a person. His daily dozen breaks down personal growth into digestible , achievable nuggets that anyone can use and implement to become a better the. READ THIS BOOK!

Just when I thought he had covered it all

I enjoy reading and trying to improve. I especially enjoy John Maxwell because he, like no other man of today, has helped me to think. Yes, I know we all think, but Dr. Maxwell has given me insights that never crossed my mind and really taught me how to THINK! I have learned about leadership, relationships, and now, with this book, building blocks for tomorrow. My only regret it that I didn't have this book forty years ago, when I was going into college. I honestly thought he had covered all the bases of life, but this book is, perhaps, his best book yet. It definitely is something we can all use. It is the perfect gift for the graduate, or even newlyweds. The lessons taught in this book are a MUST READ for everyone. Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life" helped us discover what life is all about. John Maxwell teaches us how to discipline those purposes into our lives and make each day our "masterpiece". DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!!!

Her work onstage has been recognized by the Helen Hayes Awards Society, among others. She and her husband live in Hyattsville, Maryland, with their two children.

It is fun reading, and a good book

If you read the previous 4 Brother Cadfael Books, you may anticipate the plot. There are a couple interesting twists. It is fun reading, and a good book. I enjoyed it, in spite of the predictability of the plot. Then again...... I am a Brother Cadfael fan.

Why Ruth Rendell is a Terrific Writer

This is a well-plotted, fascinating book. Rendell handles numerous characters and sub-plots with ease. Somehow she ties it all together at the end. Her descriptions of the English countryside are beautifully phrased. This is one of my favorites. The last page is truly chilling to imagine. Buy this book!

Rendell scores with a perfect hit!

"The thirteenth of May is the unluckiest day of the year. Things will be infinitely worse if it happens to fall on a Friday. That year, however, it was a Monday and quite bad enough....in the morning he ( Sergeant Martin of Kingsmarkham CID) had found a gun in the case his son took to school." And it was also to be Sergeant Martin's last day on earth!
In this absolute thriller by Ruth Rendell, the author begins "Kissing the Gunner's Daughter," and she doesn't let go of the suspense until the book is finished. A longtime fan of Rendell's Chief Inspector Wexford series, I believe this is my favorite, and I've read them all. Rendell, often called the "Queen of Crime" by the Brits (in fairness, so has P.D. James and Ellis Peters--it depends on which publisher you're reading, I suppose!) presents her lovable Wexford and assistant Mike Burden out to solve another crime in Kingsmarkham.
Police are called when three bodies are discovered shot at Tancred House; only the seventeen-year-old daughter of one of the victims survives; it is from her that the police get their initial clues. As the story develops, of course, not all the clues are what they seem. Wexford is at his best and as the list of suspects continues to grow, it is his remarkable powers of deduction and intuition that prevail.
Along the way, the chief inspector must struggle with a rift he has recently had with his daughter Sheila--this affects his abilities to see clearly, too.
The "Sunday Times" writes that "Ruth Rendell has quite simply transformed the genre of crime writing. She deploys her peerless skills in blending the mundane, commonplace aspects of life with the potent, murky impulses of desire and greed, obsession and fear." In "Kissing the Gunner's Daughter" she holds the reader spellbound to its explosive end. It is a novel that begins and ends not with a whimper but with a bang!

Don't just change the present, create the future

More often not, companies launch series after series of change initiatives which result in greater and greater failures. Why do these change initiatives fail? The authors of this book argue that it is because companies attempt to make a series of small changes. They see these series of small changes as simply tweaking hey present and therefore doomed.

The authors argue that in the new economy, companies are faced with radical and constant global, technical, social, and for many, personal change. With these sweeping changes, the authors argue that a company must also make drastic changes or encounter the failures of those that have opted for small incremental changes. How does a company make these sweeping changes? Can it be done?

The authors are consultants that had great success reviving the NCR division of AT&T. They draw on the knowledge gained from their success to deliver a step-by-step guide to what they call "revivolution," the process to renew in a revolutionary way the management, team, or organization.

The steps are grounded in the following principles for the "revivolution:"

· Self-renew is Job 1.

· We are all part of interconnected, interdependent networks

· Create successes for all of your connections

· Learn more in order to contribute more to others' success.

Two great collaborators

I had the opportunity early in my career to have Jim Belasco consult with the division I worked for in San Diego in San Diego. Jerre Stead was the CEO of the company at the time. This is another of Jim's thought provoking lessons on how to be an effective leader. I have learned much from him over the years in my growth from stock clerk to public company president.

James A. Belasco and Jerre Stead use the metaphor of the mythological phoenix to underline the need for a leader to embrace change. They suggest using the phoenix to create a new vision for yourself and your company. Their "phoenix principles" include personal renewal, recognizing your connection with others and promoting their successes, committing to learning and to taking "ownership" of your life and your company. While the book is easy-to-read, and uses a nifty new metaphor, the ideas are a familiar restatement of Principles of Marketing, Management, and Organizational Behavior 101. We [...] recommend this book to those who haven't taken the basic course lately, or to those whose spirit needs a little old-style renewal dressed in fancy feathers. If you have employees whose focus is flagging, give them a flight on the phoenix.

Dana's shock turns to chagrin when the senior partner at her firm assigns her to defend bombing suspect Corey Latham, a submarine lieutenant whose wife aborted at Hill House. Arrested by the DA and demonized by the media, Corey is assumed guilty by Dana's colleagues, the surviving victims, extremists on both sides and at first even by Dana herself. Meanwhile Dana's personal life collapses as she becomes immersed in the trial and a tabloid reporter pulls a damning secret from her best friend. Rainy Seattle and a murderous political climate lend the perfect backdrop to Sloan's nail-biting plot turns, which make up for her sometimes predictable characterizations. Though Sloan impugns radicals on both sides of the debate, she also suggests that the power of the abortion rights adversaries is as menacing as the bomb itself. Sloan grafts the spy-novel technique of rapid cutting from scene to scene to the traditional legal thriller, successfully reminding readers of the scope of the central crime throughout this somewhat overlong novel. A bomb explodes in the Seattle Family Services Center, leaving 200 adults and children dead and many other grievously injured. A U.S. Navy weapons officer on a nuclear submarine has been arrested for the crime. It falls to young defense attorney Dana McAuliffe, a junior member of a prestigious Seattle law firm, to mount the defense against one of the most hated men in America. McAuliffe is the most unsatisfying aspect of this thriller: she's a Mary Higgins Clark heroine clone, brilliant and beautiful, with the requisite sprinkling of freckles across her nose. Still, some readers will find this formulaic character comforting in a thriller that unflinchingly focuses on the aftermath of terror. Connie Fletcher

Excellent...A MUST read!

The Seattle Family Service Center is a landmark. The Center's health facilities have catered to a wide range of city people; from feeding the homeless, providing day-care services for working parents, to providing complete gynecological services including abortions, that's why it comes as a great shock when, on a chilly afternoon, a bomb goes off killing hundreds of men, women, and children. The city is stunned, and the mayor wants answers. After a few weeks of investigating, the police come up with their first (and only) suspect, young Navy officer Corey Latham.
Attorney Dana McAuliffe is a partner in a very prestigious law firm, and was a patient of the Center for many years so imagine her surprise when her senior partners approach her and ask if she will take on the defense of Corey Latham. Outraged, Dana wants to turn down the case, but after meeting Corey she has her doubts about his guilt. It seems the police have rushed to judgment with Corey for one reason only...his wife had an abortion without his knowledge, and after she told him about it he became very angry. Dana does not believe this information proves her client's guilt so she takes on the case and begins her own investigation.
After looking into several (shady) corners of this case, Dana realizes everything is not what it seems, and the further she probes, the further the media exposes every aspect of the case, as well as bringing to light things from Dana's personal life. With her life spinning out of control, Dana begins a battle with an unknown assailant hell-bent on using her as a pawn in a vast conspiracy that reaches far past the courtroom.
`Act Of God' is not only an excellent page-turner, but a novel of a very controversial topic. The plot takes off on page one, and does not let up for 500 pages more. Every character in this novel is well-drawn, and the plot twists come fast and furious. You will not only stay up late to find out the answers to this perfectly plotted mystery, but also to find out what will become of the main characters. Everything in this novel works, from it's hot topic, to it's heart racing suspense.
Susan Sloan is the author of two previous best-sellers; `Guilt By Association', and `An Isolated Incident' both of which happen to be two of my favorite all-time novels. This time around Ms. Sloan raises the stakes with a legal thriller that not only thrills, but makes you think.
I can't recommend this novel highly enough, at a whopping 530 pages I finished it in one sitting, and was sad to see it end. Buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

Susan Sloan has done it again!

Susan Sloan has written another book that had me reading the last two pages over and over again to be sure that I had read it correctly. She is the master of surprise twists, that is for sure. "Guilt by Association" remains my favorite of hers, the ultimate suspenseful thriller.
From the very first page, I was pulled into this story and the intensity never let up. I hated to put the book down to attend to the necessary chores of daily living! And when I finished, I was sorry that I no longer had this book to look forward to.
No need here to go into another synopsis, because other reviewers have ably done so before me.
Sloan's characters are fully fleshed out, as is her plot. She never got preachy about the abortion issue but presented a balanced view. At times I found the politics/policies a little confusing as each "side" tries to present its case in the best light.
If you get this book, be sure to put aside a good chunk of time to read it, because you will not be able to put it down!

A well- crafted and engrossing thriller

Former Attorney & author of An Isolated Incident & Guilt by Association, Susan Sloan explores in this superb courtroom drama Act of God, an area that doesn&3146;t often become the theme of a legal thriller - the question of abortion rights vis-Â-vis the rights of the unborn.
Corey Latham, a young naval officer has been accused of bombing the Seattle Family Service Center - a clinic that provided health services to the poor & homeless, as well as legal abortions. The bomb has killed more than a 100 people, most of them women & children.
Gritty & determined attorney, Dana McAuliffe is assigned the task of defending Corey. She gears up for action, but finds herself in the midst of a media frenzy, where the pro-choice & the anti-abortionists have decided to use the trial as an epitome of their agenda. Corey, it seems had every reason to feel hatred towards the Center, for it was in there that Corey-s wife had an abortion without his consent. With evidence loaded against Corey, a chance for acquittal seems almost nil.
McAuliffe hires her own investigator & begins to probe into the State-s case, slowly finding some points in favor of Corey.
The highlight of the work is the balance the author maintains in the courtroom action, & the "legalese" that is strong & steady for both sides, culminating in an exciting & even-sided battle in the courtroom.
Often we have seen courtroom drams dissolve into mere courtroom antics. Act of God is a noble exception, as Sloan maintains the sobriety of the issue throughout.
The question of pro-choice & pro-life have rarely made its presence so strongly felt in the legal thriller arena - save for a Robert Shapiro's Misconception or Richard North Patterson's Protect and Defend.
Act of God also poses another important question of whether abortion should remain exclusively within the zone of individual privacy or whether, & if so, to what extent, the law or State can exercise control over such actions of a person.
Act of God is sure to excite the connoisseur of good legal-fiction. It makes a thrilling &, at the same time, poignant & savory read.
